Are Friendships Supposed To Last Forever Susan Shapiro Barash Releases The Book Estranged

Dear Arroe, Hi. Husbands, partners, and jobs come and go, but close friendships are our bedrock. Until they're not. What happens when these bonds sabotage instead of support? Who among us has the courage to walk away? And how can we protect ourselves from further heartbreak? In her provocative new book, “Estranged: How Strained Female Friendships are Mended or Ended,” (Meridian Editions) well-known gender expert and bestseller Susan Shapiro Barash takes a deep dive into the complexities of female friendships. By peeling back the societal narrative that our friendships are meant to last forever, she uncovers a more nuanced reality: the closest bonds do falter. Through groundbreaking research and 150 interviews with women aged 20 to 80, Barash reveals an emerging trend — estrangement among female friends. Examples of unhealthy friendships: 1. The Faithless Friend: Always there until a third party drives a wedge between you. 2. The Wayward Friend: Drawn to questionable or dangerous behavior. 3. The Green-Eyed Friend: Jealous and secretly rooting for your failure. 4. The Thieving Friend: Betrays you by stealing your ideas, opportunities, relationships. 5. The Disparaging Friend: Tears you down with relentless criticism disguised as “honesty.” She uncovered how these suboptimal friendships can impact mental health, why women avoid conflict even in damaging relationships, the emotional trauma of cutting ties with a friend and estrangement as a radical yet necessary act of self-preservation. Barash sheds light on estrangement—both for the “estranger” who walks away and the “estrangee” who is left behind. She challenges women to reimagine their friendships and take the bold step of letting go when necessary. This cutting-edge book offers an empowering path forward: learning to prioritize self-worth, stability and authenticity over loyalty to friendships that no longer serve us. Barash has written several nonfiction books, including Tripping the Prom Queen, and A Passion for More: Affairs that Make or Break Us. She taught gender studies at Marymount Manhattan and has guest taught creative nonfiction at Sarah Lawrence's Writing Institute. She was featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, Marie Claire, and has appeared on TODAY, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC and as a guest on NPR and Sirius. She was a panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, a judge for the International Emmys, and Vice Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's JFK School of Government. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Join Ocean House owner, actor, and bestselling author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with New York Times bestselling authors Susannah Marren, Laura Zigman, and Dara Levan, who will be discussing their novels, new in paperback. About the Authors:  Susannah Marren is the author of Between the Tides, A Palm Beach Wife, A Palm Beach Scandal, and Maribelle's Shadow. Susannah has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Elle, and Marie Claire and has appeared on national television, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC. Several of her titles have been optioned by Lifetime and HBO. She has served as a literary panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts, as a judge for the International Emmys, and as Vice Chair of the Mentoring Committee of the Women's Leadership Board at the JFK School of Government, Harvard. Her featured novel is Maribelle's Shadow.  About Maribelle's Shadow: When her adored and impressive husband, Samuel, dies suddenly, the secrets and lies between Maribelle and her sisters rise to the surface. Compounding the anguish, the authenticity of their socially ambitious mother and lavish lifestyle of mansions, privilege, and couture clothes is thrown into doubt. Each sister realizes she must fend for herself as their carefully constructed image unravels. The pathway out is steep and worth any risk. Until the winner takes all. Laura Zigman is the author of six novels, including Small World, Separation Anxiety (which was optioned by Julianne Nicholson and the production company Wiip for a limited television series); Animal Husbandry (which was made into the movie Someone Like You, starring Hugh Jackman and Ashley Judd), Dating Big Bird, Her, and Piece of Work. She has ghostwritten/collaborated on several works of non-fiction, including Eddie Izzard's New York Times bestseller, Believe Me; been a contributor to the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Huffington Post; produced a popular online series of animated videos called Annoying Conversations; and was the recipient of a Yaddo residency. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she helps clients via Zoom, phone, and sometimes in person with their writing. Her featured novel is Small World.  About Small World A year after her divorce, Joyce is settling into being single again. She likes her job archiving family photos and videos, and she's developed a secret comforting hobby: trolling the neighborhood social networking site, Small World, for posts that help solve life's easiest problems. When her older sister, Lydia, also divorced, calls to tell her she's moving back east from Los Angeles after almost thirty years away, Joyce invites Lydia to move into her Cambridge apartment. Temporarily. Just until she finds a place of her own. But their unlikely cohabitation—not helped by annoying new neighbors upstairs—turns out to be the post-divorce rebound relationship Joyce hadn't planned on. Instead of forging the bond she always dreamed of having with Lydia, their relationship frayed. They rarely discuss the loss of their sister, Eleanor, who was significantly disabled and died when she was only ten years old. When new revelations from their family's history come to light, will those secrets further split them apart or, of course, correct their connection for the future? Written with wry humor and keen sensitivity, Small World is a powerful novel of sisterhood and hope—a reminder that sometimes you must look back to move ahead. Dara Levan is the creator and host of Every Soul Has a Story, a podcast in which she interviews inspiring people from around the globe. Her calling to impact others began at the age of twelve in her hometown of North Miami Beach, Florida, when she interviewed the nursing home residents where her grandmother lived and wrote their stories. As an undergrad at Indiana University, Dara earned a BA in English and pursued a career in journalism but decided to pivot and return to South Florida to earn her MS in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Dara stopped practicing speech therapy to return to full-time writing. Actively involved in her community, she is currently a board member of the Community Foundation of Broward and a board member of Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation/Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Community Foundation of Broward. Dara served as a board member of the Goodman Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Broward County and Junior Achievement of South Florida. She is also a founding member of the Circle of Friends for the Alvin Sherman Library Research, Information, and Technology Center at Nova Southeastern University. Dara is a member of the Women's Fiction Writers Association, Women's National Book Association, and the Authors Guild. Her featured novel is It Could Be Worse. About It Could Be Worse Mired in self-doubt and blind loyalty, Allegra Gil suspects her charmed life may be a gilded cage. She has a devoted husband, Benito, two loving children, a thriving therapy practice, and lifelong friends. But when a surprising discovery in a piano bench reveals a shocking family secret, Allegra questions everything she thought she knew about the two people who raised her. Was it true? Did her father, a respected pediatric neurosurgeon, harm instead of heal? And Allegra's mother—how much did she know? As the past threatens the present, Allegra plays the song of what was, what is, and what may never be in this “powerful and poignant story about letting go” (Jean Meltzer, international bestselling author of The Matzah Ball). Composed with the cadence of a waltz—up, up, down—through flashbacks to childhood memories in Miami and a music camp in Michigan, It Could Be Worse is a heartwarming, at times heart-wrenching, multigenerational story of a woman supported and embraced by many while shaken to the core by a few. “The gorgeous prose and raw, unflinching narrative both heal and inspire. A stunning debut.” (Samantha M. Bailey, USA Today and #1 international bestselling author of Woman on the Edge) For more information about the authors, please visit Susannah Marren, Laura Zigman, and Dara Levan. In her speeches, Martha McSally has the ability to take her lessons learned from combat, life, and extreme athletic endeavors and enthusiastically apply them in practical, memorable experiences propelling teams to excellence. Through humor, transparency, emotional connection, and powerful storytelling, she brings the audience into the cockpit, behind the scenes of high-stakes leadership moments in our nation's history, and captures hearts along the way, all while imparting actionable take-aways that can immediately empower individuals and teams. As a commander of her A-10 squadron, she oversaw $500M in assets and $40M in annual resources and was responsible to deploy her unit worldwide with just 24-hours' notice. McSally was deployed to Saudi Arabia on 9/11 and became a key leader in planning and executing initial air operations in Afghanistan. As a Colonel, she was hand-picked as initial cadre to stand up U.S. Africa Command from scratch, building a complex organization with limited time and resources. She then led oversight of all African continent operations, including counterterrorism and disaster relief. This experience built on her expertise in strategic planning, process creation/improvement, knowledge management, logistics, and operations. Colonel McSally is a values-driven trailblazer who demonstrates courage and integrity in her leadership, even when coming at a personal cost. She bravely took on the Pentagon in an 8-year battle to overturn discriminatory policies towards servicewomen deployed to Saudi Arabia—and won. McSally holds a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University's JFK School of Government, . As a continuation of her service to our country and others and commitment to not walk by a problem, she served four years in the U.S. House of Representatives and two years as a U.S. Senator, which is not the focus of her speeches unless asked. (She often quips it was the least interesting thing she has done in her life!) She is the author of Dare to Fly—Simple Lessons in Never Giving Up, which motivates readers to overcome fear and adversity to achieve their full potential. McSally lives in Tucson, AZ where she enjoys hiking with her rescue Golden Retriever Boomer, running, and paragliding. Through determination, discipline and grit, McSally has run over a dozen marathons, won three national military triathlon championships, and competed in two Ironman triathlons including the grueling Hawaii Ironman world championship where she won the women's military division and placed 12th in the world in her age group. She also summited many peaks including Mt Kilimanjaro (highest mountain in Africa at 19,340 ft) and Mt Blanc (highest in Western Europe). She is a force of nature ready to inspire and equip your team. Hello Intrepid Leaders and welcome to another episode of the Leadership Log where we talk about navigating everyday leadership. In this episode I am joined by the lovely Sue Tranka, CNO Wales and Nurse Director NHS Wales, and we are chatting about how you can use your 'difference' to make a difference. Come with us and listen as we reflect on how we can and must strive to unleash the difference in others as well as ourselves by sponsoring and championing individuals. We share our love of the great Brene Brown and explore the power of embracing vulnerability and muse over why we may never truly be able to master it. And Sue tells a beautiful story about a time where she felt she used her differene to make a difference and encouraged a young person to embrace the art of the possible. We all have qualities that make us unique. Instead of trying to fit into a mold, we should embrace our differences and use them to our advantage. We can learn to value our unique perspectives and use them to solve problems in creative and innovative ways. Diversity is crucial in all aspects of life. When we surround ourselves with people who have different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, we can learn from each other and create a more inclusive world. By recognizing the value of diversity, we can build stronger communities and organizations. By using our unique qualities and perspectives, we can make a positive impact in the world. We can start by identifying areas where our differences can be an asset, and then take action towards making a change. Let's celebrate our differences and use them to create a more inclusive and equitable world. When food alters gene function   Helmholtz Zentrum München, January 30, 2022   As the study shows, a high-fat diet during pregnancy and lactation leads to epigenetic* changes in the offspring. These changes affect metabolic pathways regulated by the gut hormone GIP**, whereby the adult offspring are more susceptible to obesity and insulin resistance, the precursor to type 2 diabetes. Similar mechanisms cannot be ruled out in humans, according to Pfeiffer. As scientists throughout the world observe, children of obese mothers have a higher risk of obesity and metabolic disorders. Recent findings suggest that diet-related epigenetic effects may also play a causal role in this.   (NEXT)   Probiotics Help with Morning Sickness   University of California at Davis, January 28, 2022   A study published by researchers from the University of California, Davis, has found that probiotics are a game changer for moms-to-be who find themselves green at the gills on the daily. After receiving a mix of 10 Lactobacillus probiotic strains and one Bifidobacterium strain over a 16-day period, the low-risk pregnant women in the study, who all had been experiencing nausea and other digestive system complaints, reported a 16% reduction in nausea and a 33% reduction in vomiting episodes.   (NEXT)   Higher dietary fiber intake in young women may reduce breast cancer risk   Harvard School of Public Health, January 31, 2022   Boston, MA – Women who eat more high-fiber foods during adolescence and young adulthood–especially lots of fruits and vegetables–may have significantly lower breast cancer risk than those who eat less dietary fiber when young. The researchers looked at a group of 90,534 women who participated in the Nurses' Health Study II, a large long-running investigation of factors that influence women's health. The women–ages 27-44 at the time–filled out questionnaires about their food intake, and did so every four years after that. The researchers analyzed the women's fiber intake while adjusting for a number of other factors, such as race, family history of breast cancer, body mass index, weight change over time, menstruation history, alcohol use, and other dietary factors.   (NEXT)   Cocoa flavanols may use gut microbiota pathway to ease metabolic syndrome: Review   Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, January 29, 2022   Consuming cocoa flavanols may interact with the gut microbiota as a way of preventing metabolic syndrome or easing the condition's symptoms, a review has concluded. While flavanols from a variety of dietary sources appear promising, cocoa flavanols represent an emerging approach for intervention in metabolic syndrome. Flavanols are compounds found in a variety of plant-based foods and beverages, including tea, apples, grapes, cocoa and nuts. Cocoa is generally regarded as the most concentrated dietary source of flavanols with the strongest antioxidant potential.   (NEXT)   Cruciferous vegetables help the immune system to fight intestinal pathogens   Francis Crick Institute, January 28, 2022   A study in mice shows that eating cruciferous vegetables—including broccoli, kale and cauliflower – helps the immune system to fight intestinal pathogens. The research might have implications for people with inflammatory bowel diseases. A protein called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays a crucial role in protecting us from external pollutants, toxins and pathogens at barrier sites in our body such as the skin, lungs and gut. Studying the role of AhR in the gut, scientists at the Francis Crick Institute have discovered that another protein, known as Cyp1a1, regulates immunity in the gut by providing feedback on AhR signalling by degrading the molecules that activate AhR—known as AhR ligands However, too much Cyp1a1 can deplete AhR ligands altogether. This could result in susceptibility to bacteria like pathogenic E. Coli and might play a role in conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease.   (VIDEO) Klaus Schwab referencing the global leaders groomed by WEF- at Harvard's JFK School of Government, 2017   Quit social media | Dr. Cal Newport | TEDxTysons Social Media – Why it Sickens the Self and Divides Society COVID-19: A Second Opinion (LETTER)   Letter to Joe Rogan   Dear Joe, I am writing in response to your recent clip about the controversy that has arisen over your coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic. I have been a media host dealing primarily with medicine and health for 57 years and have been engaged in many media wars and even censorship for over four decades. One lesson I have learned is to never apologize when you are correct.  Although I have not watched all of your programs addressing pandemic-related topics, your guests who have questioned the official government narrative, notably Drs. McCullough and Malone, were correct and were far better prepared to provide supporting scientific references to their claims than were Drs. Gupta and Hotez. That should be evident to your regular viewers. I would like to offer a suggestion. Have your staff make transcripts of your interviews from your pro- and con- guests and send them respectively with a request to provide supporting scientific evidence to their statements. Follow this up by moderating an open dialogue with an invitation to the press and critics to ask questions specific to the actual science and supporting clinical evidence, including the positions of our federal health agencies and the World Health Organization.  This will enable your audience and the greater public to decide.  I can predict with strong confidence that individuals such as Gupta, Osterholm and Hotez will decline to dialogue with those who they have consistently ridiculed. For those in power and whom the dominant narrative protects, it is never in their best interest to publicly debate their critics. Nevertheless your very gesture to advance open debate will be an enormous boon for yourself and a growing audience. Already, Spotify has aligned with the pro-establishment fact checkers to serve as the final arbiters of the content and conversations you conduct henceforth. This new effort is thoroughly non-objective and biased. Now that you have apologized and have exposed a weakness, unless you remain firm with your integrity to weigh out the facts and evidence objectively, they will be certain to further erode your reputation and they will succeed. In the future, whatever you air that can be ruled as misinformation – rightly or wrongly — will be magnified across the media. And it will not cease until your opponents get you off the air. You are surely aware that the assault against your program and person is highly coordinated; however, it seems certain that Spotify also exerted some kind of pressure to have you acquiesce to some demands. You have a remarkable audience, it is my belief that the size of your audience comes from your honesty and integrity, an unflinching character to shout out truth to power. Now you are at the threshold of power shouting back.  Trust your audience, not your enemies. Because no apologies you make will be fully respected because you now represent a clear and present threat to their agenda. I hope you take my comments in solidarity with your courage to question many of the lingering uncertainties, contradictions and vagrant misleading statements that comprise the official Covid narrative. Gary Null, PhD   (OTHER NEWS) Tangled Tale of NATO Expansion at the Heart of Ukraine Crisis Joe Lauria, Consortium News, January 28, 2022   The end of the Cold War with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the end of the Soviet Union two years later presented the United States with a choice: triumphalism or reconciliation. There was hope of a “peace dividend” because the fortune spent on armaments for so long could now be spent on domestic needs. The Warsaw Pact dissolved and there was hope that its counterpart, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, would also pass into history.  Rather its expansion has become a flashpoint in the current standoff over Ukraine. To assent to the reunification of Germany, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev ultimately agreed to a proposal from then U.S. Secretary of State James Baker that a reunited Germany would be part of NATO but the military alliance would not move “one inch” to the east, that is, absorb any of the former Warsaw Pact nations into NATO. On Feb. 9, 1990, Baker said: “We consider that the consultations and discussions in the framework of the 2+4 mechanism should give a guarantee that the reunification of Germany will not lead to the enlargement of NATO's military organization to the East.” On the next day, then German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said: ““We consider that NATO should not enlarge its sphere of activity.” Gorbachev's mistake was not to get it in writing as a legally-binding agreement.  For years it was believed there was no written record of the Baker-Gorbachev exchange at all, until the National Security Archive at George Washington University in December 2017 published a series of memos and cables about these assurances against NATO expansion eastward.  '” One Jan. 31, 1999 cable from the U.S. embassy in Bonn informed Washington that German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher's speech that day made clear “that the changes in Eastern Europe and the German unification process must not lead to an ‘impairment of Soviet security interests.' Therefore, NATO should rule out an ‘expansion of its territory towards the east, i.e. moving it closer to the Soviet borders.'” President Bill Clinton's administration investigated the matter and concluded that Yeltsin was wrong and that no NATO expansion eastward was ever promised. According to a 2014 article in Foreign Affairs: “'You say that NATO is not directed against us, that it is simply a security structure that is adapting to new realities,' Gorbachev told Baker in May, according to Soviet records. ‘Therefore, we propose to join NATO.' Baker refused to consider such a notion, replying dismissively, ‘Pan-European security is a dream.'” Since then NATO has held many military exercises Russia has found threatening. TASS reported in December that NATO holds 40 exercises a year near Russian territory. In 2016, a 10-day maneuver was carried out in Poland with 31,000 NATO troops from 24 nations and thousands of  tanks and other vehicles. That year NATO also installed a missile base in Romania that can strike Russia, claiming it was only “defensive” against incoming missiles from Iran, though the weapons can also be used offensively. A similar missile base, previously canceled, is slated to be operational in Poland later this year. Six years after NATO promised Ukraine would one day become a member, the U.S. led a coup in Kiev that overthrew a democratically-elected president who leaned towards Moscow. The U.S. move seemed to come from Brzezinski's playbook. In his 1997 book, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geostrategic Imperatives, he wrote: “Ukraine, a new and important space on the Eurasian chessboard, is a geopolitical pivot because its very existence as an independent country helps to transform Russia. Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be a Eurasian empire. Russia without Ukraine can still strive for imperial status, but it would then become a predominantly Asian imperial state.” Thus U.S. “primacy,” or world dominance, which still drives Washington, is not possible without control of Eurasia, as Brzezinski argued, and that's not possible without control of Ukraine by pushing Russia out.  What Brzezinski and U.S. leaders still view as Russia's “imperial ambitions” are in Moscow seen as imperative defensive measures against an aggressive West.   (NEXT)   Sweden decides against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-11   Reuters, January 28, 2022   Sweden has decided against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-11, the Health Agency said on Thursday, arguing that the benefits did not outweigh the risks. “With the knowledge we have today, with a low risk for serious disease for kids, we don't see any clear benefit with vaccinating them,” Health Agency official Britta Bjorkholm told a news conference.

Episode 38 - Sewage Sludge, The Environmental Disaster You Don't Know About with Dr. David LewisDavid L. Lewis, Ph.D., retired from the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development in 2003 as a senior-level (GS-15) Research Microbiologist with 32 years of service. He also served on the Graduate Faculty of the University of Georgia, and currently serves on the Science Advisory Board of the Focus for Health Foundation in Warren, NJ (www.focusforhealth.org/davidlewis). His investigations into public health and environmental problems has been published in Nature, Lancet and other leading scientific journals. This research has prompted the EPA, CDC, FDA and other public health organizations worldwide to upgrade infection-control guidelines and certain environmental policies. His research on adverse health effects associated with land application of treated sewage sludges prompted two hearings by the full Science Committee in the U.S. House of Representative, the passage of the No Fear Act by Congress, and a review of EPA sewage sludge (a.k.a. biosolids) policies by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and new CDC guidelines to protect workers handling biosolids. He was awarded the Science Achievement Award for 2000 by EPA Administrator Carol Browner, and the 2018 Distinguished Service Award by the Sierra Club. His book, Science for Sale: How the U.S. Government Uses Powerful Corporations and Leading Universities to Support Government Policies, Silence Top Scientists, Jeopardize Our Health, and Protect Corporate Profits is largely devoted to efforts within government and academia to downplay adverse health effects caused by land application of sewage sludges and improperly designed dental and medical devices. His primary topic is Institutional Scientific Misconduct, a term he coined for panel discussions at Harvard University's JFK School of Government, and the Royal Society of London. It refers to research misconduct sanctioned by government, industry and academic institutions, usually to create a body of bogus scientific literature to protect certain politically and economically favorable government policies and industry practices. If you've been affected by mold and want to contribute to our efforts, visit our Patreon or GoFundMe page to donate today.Patreon - patreon.com/exposingmoldGoFundMe - gofund.me/daf1233eTranscript: https://bit.ly/3mJ2nYf Click here to obtain this show's resources page: https://bit.ly/3Aozi9uFind us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YoutubeSponsors: Michael Rubino, The Mold Medic and  All American Restoration,  the first and only mold remediation company in the country specializing in remediating mold for people with underlying health conditions or mold sensitivities. “COVID-19 has impacted so many people around the world, and people really are the heart of my leadership and have been the number one priority through the pandemic. It is important to have great brands and great products and great pipeline, but people make the business.” June Lee Risser is Vice President and General Manager for the U.S. Galderma Consumer Care business.  A strategic business leader with a passion for building great brands, June is responsible for leading the U.S. commercial organization for the Galderma portfolio of consumer-available brands, including Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Care products, celebrating 70 years of healthy skin in 2017 and Differin® Gel,  first FDA-approved, prescription-strength retinoid acne treatment available over the counter since 2017.  June joined Galderma in April 2016 as Vice President of Marketing for the Consumer business.  In that role, she redefined the strategy and streamlined the structure of the marketing team to drive stronger growth on the priority brands of Cetaphil and Differin.  Prior to joining Galderma, June spent 12 years with Reckitt Benckiser in roles of increasing responsibility.  During her tenure there, she led key consumer brands such as Lysol and Clearasil to new heights.  As Global Innovation Director for the Personal Care Category based in the U.K., she led strategic planning and innovation for Clearasil. Before that, June was a Managing Director in a brand strategy consulting firm in NYC, Vivaldi Partners, advising clients on marketing and growth strategies.  June holds a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and a master's degree from the JFK School of Government at Harvard University. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with June: Boots on the ground = real commitment. Camp Wonder is the annual event for children suffering from skin disorders that Cetaphil sponsors and is particularly proud of. Instead of just dropshipping products, June and her team attend the event on a regular basis. By being there, their commitment is illustrated, and furthermore, the experience invigorates her and her team because they get to experience the good that the brand does first hand, which is an incredible boost to morale and, therefore, performance. Having a mission is critical for a brand, but make sure your teammates can witness the mission in action up close and personal. Maintain relevance by returning to your brand's core purpose. In this day and age, there are endless amounts of upstarts that are disrupting many businesses, CPG & beauty in particular. To safeguard against this disruption, June recommends staying entirely in touch with what your brand's purpose was on day one instead of constantly reevaluating who you are, thereby confusing consumers. Third-party endorsements can help tremendously, not just doctors but influencer experts as well. Marketing, however, is a constant struggle and requires pivoting and reevaluating your strategies and tactics regularly but make sure you keep your core principles top of mind throughout the journey. Look for courage and integrity in new hires. When asked what she looks for when hiring new candidates, June, without question, stated courage and integrity. She went on to say that sales and marketing skills can be taught, but what cannot be taught are these two qualities that can tremendously enable an employee to have a consistently positive impact on the company's culture and bottom line, particularly during tough times like COVID-19. Find a way to seek these qualities out in your prospective employees in the interview process. This could be through stories of triumph over adversity or stories of courage. Integrity and courage can trump skills and experience in the long term. ----- Produced by https://podcastlaunch.pro (Simpler Media)

She currently resides in Boston and spends her free time training for half marathons and pursuing her love of interior design. Christine joins Sustainable Nation to discuss: Process of developing a new sustainability strategy  Communicating sustainability through the product Product take back programs and circularity  Approach to addressing climate risks and opportunities Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Christine's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? The one piece of advice that I would say that I've found to be so helpful is rely heavily on internal stakeholder engagement. I've always in my career been either a sole practitioner as I am here at Tumi and Samsonite, or you know, I've had a very small team and you really need to get your colleagues engaged in the work. So, anything that you can do to include your colleagues as part of the development of the strategy, you know, understanding what your issues are, developing the goals and right now we're in the process of determining how we're going to collect and report data to demonstrate progress against those goals. Now, I have to send out a significant amount of you know, surveys with lots of questions and ask them to spend time to provide me with a lot of information. And so I'm following that same process that I used for the materiality assessment and for the strategy development and the goal setting to also do to the data collection. And they all have been part of that process from the beginning, they're already bought into the goals that we're setting and they feel really committed and invested in ensuring that we can report against those goals in a meaningful way, and that they're getting credit for the great work that they're doing. So involving your colleagues in any way that you can, at every step of the process is going to enable you to be so much more successful. I am not an advocate of setting a strategy and then handing it off to people and saying, go do this when they've not had any hand in helping you develop a process, that's actually gonna work for them because if it doesn't work for your colleagues, it's never gonna work for you. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I am most excited about the growth in circularity and zero waste. So, you know, we are a consumer goods company. Consumers are always going to buy products. We hope that they always support and buy Tumi products, but at the same time, you know, we want to make sure that we're increasing the circularity of those products, whether we're partnering with other organizations to utilize materials and waste that they have access to that they can't use, whether we're looking at how to minimize the waste within our own manufacturing facilities, working with suppliers to minimize that waste. And then thinking about how do we use materials like the recycled PET so that we are helping to eliminate waste within the existing waste stream and repurposing it. I think that's one of the most exciting conversations that we're having here at Tumi is thinking about how do we design for circularity. How do we use recycled materials and recyclable materials in our products? I love it. What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read? So the book that I would recommend is not a sustainability book per se, but it is one of my favorite books and I think inspired me to get into the work that I do. And that is the, it's a classic Walden by Henry David Thoreau and in full transparency I did work with the Walden Woods Project and I have lived in the Boston area, very close to Walden, and it is one of my very favorite places in the world. And I think that, you know, it has a lot of valuable messages that really resonate with the work that sustainability professionals do, but it often reminds me everyone should have their Walden. Everyone should have the place that they go, where they can reconnect with what's most important to who they are and what they do. We're quickly losing those places. We're quickly losing the beautiful places of this world. And I think, you know, it's the work that we do, to me, the work that we're really committed to is how do we protect and preserve those places for travelers of today and tomorrow so they can go find their own Walden. Then they can go to a beautiful beach in Bali and it's not covered with plastic bottles, but rather they're carrying a bag that helped divert those plastic bottles from that scene. And so, you know, it really does inspire me to continue to do the work that I do so that everyone can have their own beautiful place like Walden. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? So I referenced it earlier and I am a big proponent of the materiality assessment. And it's perhaps because, you know, in the work that I've done, I've often come into organizations as the first director of sustainability and I think it's a great tool. One to ensure that we're not talking to ourselves about the issues that are important to us, you know, it enables you to really identify what's most important to your business what's really going to have the most impact. It helps me learn about the organization and the industry as well. If I'm new to that organization and industry, it gives me an excuse to talk to my colleagues and to educate them about sustainability and say, hey, this is the first step you're going to be part of this journey that we're on to develop our sustainability strategy. I'm here to ask you to tell me what you think is most important to our business. And so it also, as you evaluate and revisit the materiality over time, it enables you to really determine what's most important to your business so that you can use your resources wisely. I mean, all of us especially right now, but in particular in sustainability are often resource constrained, whether that's budget or time. And there can be so much noise in the sustainability space that it allows you to really say, these are the issues that we're going to focus on. We're going to focus on, you know, product innovation, we're going to focus on driving supply chain, we're going to focus on carbon action, we're going to focus on people and yeah, there's a lot of other important stuff out there, but this is what we're going to focus on right now. So, I really love the materiality assessment. And finally, Christine, where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Samsonite and Tumi? Sure. So you can learn more about all the great work that Tumi is doing in this space and you know, the merge Alpha Bravo and devote collections that we're launching. The Tumi difference page of the Tumi website and then you can read our annual sustainability report, which thank you for doing that. You've referenced it a couple of times, and that's on the investor relations page of the Samsonite website. I am on LinkedIn. You can find me there. It's my full name Christine Riley Miller. Christine Miller is fairly common. So you might find a bunch of them, but Christine Riley Miller. About Sustridge Sustridge is a sustainability consulting firm providing consulting in sustainability strategy development, sustainability reporting, GHG emissions calculating and management, zero waste planning and guidance in a TRUE Zero Waste, B Corp, LEED and Carbon Neutral certification.

How do you make a plan for a crisis situation that you didn't see coming - the unforeseen crisis? That's what we tackle in this week's episode of the Managing Uncertainty podcast. Topics discuss include crisis frameworks, the Harvard National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) program, crisis communications, situational awareness, and dealing with unknowns during a crisis. //static.leadpages.net/leadboxes/current/embed.js Episode Transcript Hi everyone. This is Bryan Strawser, Principal and CEO at Bryghtpath. And welcome back to the Managing Uncertainty Podcast. Today I want to talk about this idea that you can have a perfect plan for any crisis situation. I think in our list of potential podcast topics, my co-host Jen, who's currently on military leave, wrote this down as the idea of, you can't have a perfect plan for something that has never happened before. And Jen, of course, is correct in this. We often have talked on the podcast and in our writings on our blog, about building crisis management frameworks, and about writing plans for specific situations, about creating collaborative decision-making processes, about communicating the results of those decisions. And so, what I want to talk about is just this idea of building comprehensive crisis management frameworks and how the unknown risk, the unknown scenario, the thing that you didn't foresee factors into that framework. We've talked before about building frameworks that move from the bottom up within an organization where incidents or crisis situations of all types, financial, reputational, technology, continuity, natural disasters, security incident, information security incident, pick the problem, pick the disruption that's impacting your company, and you're bringing that into the same crisis process. You're bringing it into the same way that you're talking about something and making decisions in a collaborative manner. And you have a way to escalate that to senior executives and to the board of directors or to the elected official in a public sector agency. But you're moving, this crisis is moving up through your organizational hierarchy in a way that you define as a framework. And that's usually where you start. It's where you start when you're building a crisis process. And then we go back, and we say, we're here are the top five, six, 10 things that we think are going to happen. They're disruptions that we know we're going to have, that we're most at risk from having. And now we build specific plan annexes to address those particular problems that might happen to your organization. Those risky situations that you think you're going to find yourselves in. I think of those as routine incidents. There are things that we've built plans for, their things that we've foreseen. We probably have preparedness steps for these. We have expectations for the various business units in our organization to prepare for these incidents. And we've put probably pretty good detailed processes and protocols in place and that's great for the situations that you can see, that you think are going to happen. That's exactly the planning that you want to do because then you can just execute. You can just get it done. You pull out the plan, hey, we just saw the hurricane be forecast, and I know in five days out from rainfall and I got to do these 40 things today as an organization. That's awesome. The challenge becomes when you're hit with the thing that you didn't expect, the crisis that you didn't foresee and now you don't have a plan that you can execute. Instead, what you're doing is you're relying upon this framework that we hope you've built that allows for collaborative decision making and communication, and you're able to use that framework to get you through the crisis situation that you didn't see. So you're moving from this routine, this world of routine incidents, and you want to have the ability to have good situational awareness of what else is going on around you. What are those external factors that are influencing what's going on? You have good collaborative cross-functional discussion. You have a crisis leader with a good strategic view and now you find yourself in the situation where you didn't have a plan, you have the unforeseen crisis, and now you've got to rely upon that decision making framework because you don't know what to do. You don't have the specific task-oriented plan. What this calls out for me are a couple things that I've seen some organizations struggle with. The first is having leaders in the crisis process that are overseeing what's going on there. The incidental leader. They're someone who we hope is emotionally intelligent that can take a balanced leadership view to the situation and they see the bigger picture. The story I always tell when I talk about this, and this has been told many times in different ways, but it's the story of a man coming up on a construction site and there's some stonecutters working, some stone masons that are working to build, it looks to be some church building. And he asks the first stonemason, well, what are you building? And the stonemason says, well, I'm a stonemason, I'm cutting stone, and I'm laying mortar, and I'm putting stones down. I'm building a wall. He walks a little bit, and he turns to another stonemason. He goes, what are you guys, what are you doing? And the stonemason stops and looks up at the construction site. And he goes, we are building the most beautiful cathedral. One stonemason was focused on the tactical. He saw his task and what he needed to do. The second stonemason saw the strategic view. He saw the bigger picture of what was going on. He saw the factors, the external factors of what was happening. That second stonemason is the kind of crisis leader that you need. Somebody who understands how to connect the tactical to the strategic. Where that really comes into play in these situations is the second part of the puzzle that I think companies struggle with and that is that everybody wants to have a detailed plan for something. The challenge in these situations is when the thing happens, and you don't have a plan for the new thing, the new thing that has happened to you. Think about what we faced in the United States on September, on the morning of September 11. To most extents, we didn't foresee a terrorist attack involving hijacking of airplanes and crashed in them in the buildings, but that's what happened that morning. There was no plan to fall back on to go act upon. There was no agenda or blueprints of what to execute. It had to be figured out in the moment. A similar situation happened that illustrates this with the Sendai earthquake Tsunami and radiological disaster in 2011 in Japan. But Japan is very strong at nuclear safety and response, being very strong at earthquake preparedness and response, being very strongest Tsunami preparedness and response, probably the best in the world that at least two of those three things that I just mentioned. But when all three happened at the same time, well that just wasn't a scenario that they ever saw happening. And because of that, they struggled in that response. They really had a difficult time managing through the response required in that type of national scale disaster. So they found themselves in that place where they didn't have a plan. And that's where it's just absolutely critical that you have the collaboration and decision-making framework and communication framework that's necessary to manage through that crisis situation. The one for which you can't have a plan because you've simply never foreseen the situation that you've now found ourselves in. If you want to learn more about this idea of routine incidents and planning and situational awareness, and then finding yourself in this situation without a plan, there's a, it's academic, but there's a very good paper called Acting In Time Against Disaster, a comprehensive risk management framework. It's by doctor Dutch Leonard and Arnold Howard from Harvard University. They're in the business school, in the JFK School of Government. And they are approaching this more from national scale disasters, from a public sector perspective. But there are many lessons to be learned from this for business as well. So again, write good detailed plans for the risks that you know are going to happen for the things that you can foresee, have good leaders that see the strategic view, get them the tools that let them have the situational awareness of what's happening and the factors influencing that and build a comprehensive crisis management framework that you can use in any situation, regardless of what has happened in terms of the disruption to your organization. That's it for this episode of the Managing Uncertainty podcast. We'll catch you next week.
