When scientists finally learn how to make ceramics that can endure high temperatures and conduct electricity without resistance, they may have to thank the sea urchin for teaching them how to do it.While the ceramics that humans manufacture are fairly strong and resist forces that destroy other materials, they have their imperfections. They are not shatter-resistant. And it takes a lot of heat to create them. On the other hand, mollusks like the nautilus and sea urchin make shatterproof ceramics out of calcium carbonate—which is chalk—using no heat and a little water. And the mollusk‑created ceramics come in intricate shapes, often much more complex than those made by humans.Scientists are now studying how mollusks make their ceramics so that we can also make better ones. The processes they are learning will enable the manufacture of strong ceramic materials that conduct electricity without resistance. They will be cheap and easy to make, yet they will provide us with better building materials and even artificial bones.Scientists are learning that the secret to making superior ceramics uses cheap materials and a very complex series of chemical reactions carried out by special cells in ceramic‑making mollusks. It's definitely not a system that was worked out by no one at all through chance and accident. In effect, science is seeking to learn how the Creator made ceramics, so that we can do it too!Genesis 1:31"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. Fatma Hassona was a Palestinian photographer from Gaza City who was killed with her family by an Israeli airstrike in April 2025. A year earlier, the Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi began recording video conversations with Hassona about her life and work under Israeli bombardment, which became the film Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk. In this episode, Adam Shatz talks to Farsi about the process of making the film, the connection she formed with Hassona, and the practical and ethical challenges of documenting Israel's devastation of Gaza and its people. This week, co-hosts Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Elizabeth Earley (@therealelizabethearley), author and host of the popular Substack series (and podcast), Queering Reality, and the author of two novels: A Map of Everything and Like Wings, Your Hands. Her new nonfiction essay collection, Little Deaths All in a Row: Essays on Sex and Death, was released in September. We chat with Elizabeth about some super casual, lighthearted topics like the link between the female orgasm and the moment of birth or death, the age-old question of what happens after we die, how birth and death open channels to freely give and receive love, and the philosophical debate over whether humans can ever experience true reality.  Elizabeth wrote Little Deaths All in a Row in the aftermath of a near-fatal motorcycle accident that sent her mind into a panicked state while her body was in the literal process of dying. Although she survived this brush with death, Elizabeth was determined to examine her fear and attempt to overcome it so that the next time she met death, she'd be able to pass on gracefully. She explains that while she did not have a “near death experience” of the other side like some people do in terrible accidents, she does believe state of mind during the moment of death has an impact on what comes after. In order to get more intimate with death, Elizabeth began doing energy healing work on hospice patients.
