I want to tell you the story of a kid, born in 1937 into segregated Washington, D.C. He's 9 when his father dies and 13 when his mother has a mental breakdown, disappears, and is institutionalized. He's effectively orphaned. This is how George Raveling's story begins. Despite being dealt one of the worst cards imaginable, George, now 87, went on to become the most revered basketball coach in the world. He played against Jerry West, the man on the NBA logo. He became only the second black basketball player for Villanova University. And he went on to become the first black coach at several American universities. He'd go on to coach and mentor players like Michael Jordan. And chances are, you probably would've never worn—or even heard of—Air Jordan sneakers if it wasn't for George. Yet, in all his decades of coaching, the words Head Coach never appeared on his door. Instead, it always read: “George Raveling, Educator.” George has had a bit of a Forrest Gump life, somehow showing up at the most important events in American 20th-century history. He stood next to Martin Luther King Jr. at the March on Washington. He met presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Harry S. Truman. And he traveled the world promoting basketball as an international sport. This is a man who made his own breaks, continues to break glass ceilings, and embodies the American dream. Today on Honestly, Bari Weiss sits down with George to discuss his extraordinary life and his new book, What You're Made For: Powerful Life Lessons from My Career in Sports, which he wrote alongside Ryan Holiday. You may have missed it, but there's a new gang of train robbers in the American West — and they're suprisingly like the bandits of old. For over a decade a team comprised mostly of Mexicans from the state of Sinaloa has been jumping aboard freight cars, sometimes at 70mph, and grabbing…Nike sneakers. Yes, these enterprising thieves have got their eyes on a very particular prize: unreleased, limited-edition Nikes, mostly Air Jordans. And they're good at it. This week's show digs into the gang's MO, what can be done, and some heists of yesteryears — including Butch Cassidy, Jesse James, and a remarkable gold heist that shocked Victorian London. Back at it with episode 80, Nick holds the fort down this episode. We kick things off with a celebration of one of the greatest hood movies of all time: Friday. The movie turns 30 in 2025, and Nick asks if it is the greatest hood movie of all time, over Boyz in the Hood, Menace 2 Society, and more. His answer may surprise you based on quotables, longevity, cast, and messaging in the movie. After that, social media is flooded with pictures left and right of Mt. Rushmore on certain subjects from Air Jordans, comedians, basketball players, etc. One that has struck with Nick for this episode to discuss is a picture of white rappers on Mount Rushmore. Nick gives his thoughts on the picture and gives his opinion of his version. Later, rapper Dody6 featured on Kendrick Lamar's "Hey Now" is now blaming him for being homeless after Dody claims that the song didn't do anything to help him financial wise. Nick asks questions about the entire situation and gives advice for Dody about what to do next. Those looking to pick up a pair of the brand's Air Jordan 1 High sneakers could shell out an extra $18 on top of their current $180 price tag after the new tariff goes into effect April 9, industry sources told The Post. The 46% tariff on Vietnam would add another $8.28 to the total cost per pair, which adds up when its multiplied by 8,000 – or the number of sneakers that can fit in to a shipping container. But Nike is likely to negotiate deals with its factories to mitigate these costs — or as many industry experts believe, the tariffs will change as the countries negotiate deals. It has probably happened to you before. You and a friend are talking—not texting, not DMing, not FaceTiming—but talking, physically face-to-face, about, say, an upcoming vacation, a new music festival, or a job offer you just got.And then, that same week, you start noticing some eerily specific ads. There's the Instagram ad about carry-on luggage, the TikTok ad about earplugs, and the countless ads you encounter simply scrolling through the internet about laptop bags. And so you think, “Is my phone listening to me?”This question has been around for years and, today, it's far from a conspiracy theory. Modern smartphones can and do listen to users for voice searches, smart assistant integration, and, obviously, phone calls. It's not too outlandish to believe, then, that the microphones on smartphones could be used to listen to other conversations without users knowing about it.Recent news stories don't help, either. In January, Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that the company had eavesdropped on users' conversations through its smart assistant Siri, and that it shared the recorded conversations with marketers for ad targeting. The lead plaintiff in the case specifically claimed that she and her daughter were recorded without their consent, which resulted in them receiving multiple ads for Air Jordans. In agreeing to pay the settlement, though, Apple denied any wrongdoing, with a spokesperson telling the BBC:“Siri data has never been used to build marketing profiles and it has never been sold to anyone for any purpose.”But statements like this have done little to ease public anxiety. Tech companies have been caught in multiple lies in the past, privacy invasions happen thousands of times a day, and ad targeting feels extreme entirely because it is.Where, then, does the truth lie?Today, on the Lock and Code podcast with David Ruiz, we speak with Electronic Frontier Foundation Staff Technologist Lena Cohen about the most mind-boggling forms of corporate surveillance—including an experimental ad-tracking technology that emitted ultrasonic sound waves—specific audience segments that marketing companies make when targeting people with ads, and, of course, whether our phones are really listening to us.“Companies are collecting so much information about us and in such covert ways that it really feels like they're listening to us.”Tune in today. You can also find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts, plus whatever preferred podcast platform you use.For all our cybersecurity coverage, visit Malwarebytes Labs at malwarebytes.com/blog.Show notes and credits:Intro Music: “Spellbound” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Outro Music: “Good God” by Wowa (unminus.com)Listen up—Malwarebytes doesn't just talk cybersecurity, we provide it.Protect yourself from online attacks that threaten your...
There's no debating that Michael Jordan has the best signature sneaker line ever in the Air Jordans, but who comes next? Sarah's under the weather, but we can't let it get in the way of our 900th episode celebration! Susie tells us that a rare Charizard hit the market, and it's a Cheeto. We're pretty psyched about it, but not as psyched as whatever fool paid $90K for it. There's still time to bid on the Cheeto that looks like the Air Jordan logo though, so don't sleep on that. Susie is obsessed with the Gene Hackman death mystery and how it had the wildest ending imaginable--perfect for a movie...just saying. Sarah is a ChatGPT enthusiast, so we debate whether AI should be used to write emotional texts like obituaries, thank you notes, and breakup letters. Two men died recently looking for Bigfoot (maybe Bigfoot killed them?). And Munchausen by Proxy now has a digital version and it is WILD. Hear why one woman bullied her kid anonymously via burner phones, and what the motive could possibly be for that insanity.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Go to https://www.hungryroot.com/braincandy and use code braincandy to get 40% off your first box PLUS get a free item in every box for life. In 1975, the University of North Carolina basketball team were being led by two men... A 44 year old coach named Dean Smith, and a 19 year old Freshman Point Guard by the name of Phil Ford. The two of them were about to change the program forever. The ACC tournament was Ford's coming out party as he averaged 26 points a game and was named the MVP of the conference tourney as he helped the Tar Heels shock David Thompson and the defending champion Wolfpack in the finals to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Ford would go from there to have one of the greatest four years in UNC basketball history finishing as the school's all-time leading scorer. As it turns out, this kid was golden as well. Playing for Smith again, he guided Team USA to a Gold Medal win in the 1976 Olympics. His junior season he led the Heels to the Final Four and the title game as a consensus first team All-American and in his final season, he once again was a first team All-American before winning the coveted John R. Wooden Award given out to college basketball's top player. When he done, #12 would hang from the rafters and he still to this day is the $4 all-time leading scorer in North Carolina basketball history. An eye injury would derail his promising NBA career which started as the #2 pick of the Kansas City Kings. He would finish his first year as the NBA Rookie of the Year and was well on his way to a long professional career before his vision was forever altered. His playing days over, Ford would return to Chapel Hill in 1988 as an assistant coach under Dean Smith and in 1993 was on his staff for Smith's 2nd national title and first since another freshman sensation by the name of Michael Jordan won it all in 1982 for the Tar Heels. Ford would stay with Smith until he retired and then another three seasons before leaving in 2000. He tells us on the Past Our Prime podcast how much he loved and admired Coach Smith and how his spiritual guidance may have saved his life. He talks about that sensational ACC Tournament that in 1975 that led him to being on the cover of Sports Illustrated and how a year later he was one of 4 UNC players to bring home an Olympic gold medal for the USA. And he talks about the famous "Four Corners" offense that Coach Smith came up with, and Ford helped him perfect. Before there was an Air Jordan, there was Phil Ford... the best point guard in the University of North Carolina's history and one of the best ever to do it... and he shares his insights and stories with us on Past Our Prime. How far would Nike possibly go when it comes to bringing grail sneakers back out of the vault?
