The films we're screening show different ways that the Germans confront their past. First up is The Lives of Others, a 2006 drama that takes place on the other side of the Berlin wall. Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon This is a psychological experience. When I describe it in full, if you are of any age, you will almost certainly think "oh yes, that has happened to me." For older listeners, the name Baader-Meinhof might be memorable as a name given to a group who liked to call themselves the 'Red Army Faction.' The name Baader-Meinhof, after two notable members of the group, was given to it by journalists. In the late sixties, all through the seventies, and even into the eighties, the Red Army Faction were responsible for a number of terrorist attacks in and around East and West Germany. One person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter, but we will not get into that discussion. This psychological phenomenon was given the name, after a man wrote a letter to a newspaper in 1994 pointing out that he had recently heard the name, Baader-Meinhof, and thereafter, seemed to hear or see it again and again. Following that, many people wrote to the same newspaper making similar comments, about recently heard names, usually nouns, which were then noticed by them frequently. The phenomenon was also given the name 'Frequency Illusion' in 2005. Wikipedia Here is the Wikipedia link to the page for the 'Frequency Illusion', also known as the 'Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon.

What if we’ve all been primed?

Tom Nikkola Audio Articles

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2020 7:16

We’re all in this together. Stay home. Stay safe. We’ll get through this. It’s our new normal. These words have been repeated so many times, you’d think they’re used for selling the latest superfood. They’re not selling a superfood, but is it possible they’re trying to sell us something? A Sequence of Events Vanessa and I were playing our morning game of Sequence and drinking our coffee in early April (we’ve been playing card games before work since well before the COVID-19 chaos). Just before the news shifted to commercial, the newsperson stated, "Stay home. Stay safe." The commercials came on, with one after another using the phrases I mentioned above. That was the moment I first realized how often those phrases were coming at us. Of course, once you notice something like this, you can't not see it and hear it anymore. Welcome to the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. Perhaps my bringing it up to you will make you aware now too. Whether the coordinated use of these phrases was some sort of nationwide scheme created by a group behind "the curtain," or it was a simple coincidence, we've been primed, and it's had a visible impact on people's thoughts, words, and actions. Behavioral Priming Though its effects are controversial, psychologists, researchers, and marketers have tested behavioral priming since the middle of the 20th century. If you’re not familiar with priming, it is the ability to influence someone’s thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors without them knowing about it, through exposing them to a previous stimulus. For example, repeating the phrase, “Stay home. Stay safe.” could be a form of priming, as it has the potential to impact the way people think (or don't think and just do), speak, or act. As John Bargh explains in his article, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, The past 25 years have seen amazing empirical advances in our knowledge of the kinds of psychological concepts and processes that can be primed or put into motion unconsciously. Social norms to guide or channel behavior within the situation; goals to achieve high performance, to cooperate with an opponent, or to be fair minded and egalitarian; emotions that shape our reactions and responses to subsequent, unrelated stimuli; and of course, knowledge structures such as stereotypes and trait constructs for use in the comprehension and encoding of often ambiguous social behavior. And social behavior itself can be produced unconsciously in the same fashion.Still more recently, though, priming effects of even greater complexity have been discovered, such as in the nonconscious activation of deep cultural ideologies and other interpersonal relations…Bargh JA, 2006 Consider this statement: We're all in this together. If you hear this over and over, and unconsciously believe it, then it means those who don't follow the conventional recommendations aren't in this with you. They're outsiders. They are easy to target and hate and slander. It feels okay to treat them as outsiders because people believe they have the support of their pack to do so. Or take this one: Stay home. Stay safe. This implies that by staying home, you’re doing something that helps protect people. To not stay home then, would mean putting others at risk. It sets the stage for people to easily buy into the idea that if you don’t stay home, you’re selfish. There's nothing to prove this statement is accurate. Recent data says the opposite: 66% of hospitalizations in New York are from people sheltering in place. Yet, if you asked the average person what they should do to protect themselves and others, they'd say, "I should stay home to stay safe." Behavioral priming can lead us to believe something is a fact even without evidence to support it. It would explain why some people feel it's okay to throw stones at those who believe in something other than staying home. They want to slander doctors who suggest we're actually safer...

The Pirates aren't last in the NL Central anymore after a huge comeback win to sweep the Padres. The Streisand Effect is exactly what Eric described, named so because Babs tried to get pictures of her Malibu home buried online. MB was describing the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. Mike Foltynewicz was drafted by the Astros out of high school with the 19th overall pick in 2010 and entered the 2014 season as Baseball America's No. 59 prospect before coming to the Braves in a trade for backstop Evan Gattis.

If I had heard of the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon when I was in high school or college, I would have immediately made it my band's name. It sounds like an angsty progressive German punk group or something. What it actually describes, though, is much more interesting. It's the sensation you feel when you've learned a new word or idea, and suddenly you begin to see it everywhere. As a person who is delighted by words and ideas anyway, this happens to me a lot. And it can be dangerous, as was the case with Jim Carrey's character in the movie, 23. To the man with a hammer, everything is a nail. I'm in the midst of a season of my life where I'm trying to read all the books people assume I've already read, and last week I finished John Steinbeck's East of Eden. It's an imaginative retelling of the Cain and Abel story, set in Northern California at the dawn of the 20th century and got my mind reeling with regard to the fundamentals of family relationships. So when I picked up C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces this past weekend, I was struck with a Baader-Meinhof moment. Was I just reading the Cain and Abel dynamic into this story about two sisters and their struggles to connect with the Divine and with one another? No, I don't think so.I saw it again in this week's text, Luke 10:38-42. It's a familiar scene and such a short passage for the amount of ink that's been spilled on it. Martha and Mary are another female Cain and Abel pair. In some ways, the story nearly foreshadows that of Jesus' Prodigal Son parable in chapter 15. Maybe Martha and Mary served as his inspiration to craft that tale. Perhaps as he walked away from their open home and extravagant hospitality, he began to think of a story to describe those sisters: the one who had much love because she'd been forgiven much, and the other, center of the home yet far from the Father's heart. We can certainly say that the connection between how we think our Father treats us and how we treat our sisters and brothers is a theme Jesus is very concerned about.

Why We Need to Stop Bastardizing Struggle

I’m going to Baader-Meinhof you: "STRUGGLE." The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon occurs when you become aware of something, and then start to notice it everywhere around you. Like Cole in The Sixth Sense who saw "dead people,” I see struggle. If you don't see it already, you're about to see struggle too. I don’t actually see people struggling. I see and hear people write and talk about their struggle. However, the situations they describe as struggle are nothing more than the challenges of everyday life. Bastardized Struggle We live at a time when when things are fairly good for most people. However, the human mind has a way of finding problems. In the absence of major problems, we tend to make the minor ones major, at least in our minds. We literally make mountains out of mole hills. We start to believe the little stuff that's part of life is a bigger deal than it is. That's dangerous. If you believe the little stuff is a struggle, you'll be woefully unprepared for the big stuff that truly is a struggle. In addition, you'll perceive everything that's a challenge as a struggle. Eventually, your mind will be overwhelmed with all the "struggles" you face, and you'll feel like something is either wrong with you, or the world is against you. What does it mean to struggle? According to the Collins English Dictionary, the definition of struggle is: to contend with an adversary or opposing force. to contend resolutely with a task, problem, etc.; strive to advance with violent effort Each of the three definitions involves a tone of action and tenacity. To advance with violent effort means you deliberately, intentionally, passionately do whatever it takes to reach your goal. Sometimes the opposing force is you. Sometimes the opposing force is a false perception of the world you live in. Sometimes the opposing force is all the stuff you have to get done to reach your goal. The point is, for you to truly struggle, you can't passively sit around and talk about how hard things are. You don’t search for sympathy or settle for things staying as they are. You don’t whine and complain. You don’t wish for someone else to deal with your stuff for you. If you truly struggle, you take all the action necessary to achieve your goal, in spite of the resistance pushing down on you. Struggle is Not… When someone says... ...they struggle to eat well, while they have a refrigerator full of junk food, or they struggle to build a home-based business, while they spend their evenings scrolling through Facebook, or they struggle in their marriage, while pointing their finger at their spouse, and doing nothing to change their own ways of communicating and relating to him or her, or they struggle in college while spending study time in a drunken stupor, or they struggle to get a promotion at work, while doing the bare minimum to keep their job, or they struggle to get out of debt while buying toys and TVs on credit… …they do not struggle. They face a reality of life that comes from choices that take them down a different path than the choices that are proven to work. Struggle is… Struggle is... a student with ADHD who controls his impulses long enough to study the material for class, even though it’s 10 times harder for him than it is for his classmates, or a stay-at-home mom who makes the most of the job she has, so she can provide for her family, and brings joy home with her even though her days are long and the deadbeat dad is nowhere to be found, or an alcoholic who holds true to his sobriety, even when friends drink all around him, or the husband who encourages and lifts up his wife as she battles through one health complication after another, not knowing what the future might hold, or the parents who unexpectedly lose a child, and work through the grief together, while lifting up and encouraging their other children, or the athlete who’s badly hurt, and deals with the pain and frustration of therapy to battle her way back, or

Did you ever decide that you were in the market for something, let's say you need a car, and all of a sudden you see advertisements for cars all over the place? Or, you learn a new word and suddenly you see it being used everywhere? This is called the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, and it's a weird little trick our brains play on us. And recently, I was pranked by my brain in this manner. Episode 9 was devoted to songs that you may not have known were covers of other artists, and I thought at that time that it was kind of a fun idea, and I'd like to come back to it once in awhile. Now, I was thinking maybe another 20 or 30 episodes down the road, but then Baader-Meinhof got in the way and I started really noticing it when it was pointed out that a song I was listening to was a cover of another recording. So, because I have a tendency to write stuff down and then immediately lose the notes, I decided to return to the concept a little more quickly than I usually do. And the fun thing is, I'm saving the one that came as the biggest surprise to me for another show. So this time around we're going to hear from musicians as diverse as Salt 'n' Pepa, Led Zeppelin and Linda Lyndell. Who? Just go listen, you'll be fine, I promise. In fact, you're going to be sad that you don't know who Linda Lyndell is, especially when you find out WHY you don't know who she is. I noted this briefly at the end of the show, but something I noticed only while I was recording was that all of the songs enjoyed only modest success until the cover came out. But the other common thread is that the more successful artist made some sort of change to the song, almost as if that made the difference between whether or not the song was a hit. As usual, if your favorite podcatcher isn't getting the job done, you can feel free click on the player below to listen and/or download the show: Also, my apologies for the late delivery of this episode; I had a technical issue that was frankly kind of scary, and had me wondering whether I'd be forced to A) re-record the episode after B) buying a new computer, but fortunately I managed to fix what was wrong and we're only a few hours late.

It's been pointed out to us that this may be the only Mac technology podcast that comes out of the UK. Maybe the UK is just smaller than it seems to us as we sit here. If it's true, though, we do have a certain responsibility to be the best technology podcast possible and to podcastily cover technology. There is plenty of tech this week ranging from OLED we haven't got to wireless charging that we now have, plus digs at Microsoft and Android, probably, and a brand new feature. It's a blink and you miss it new feature, but it's important: we present the One More Thing fully comprehensive guide to buying TV sets.

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over

[This episode originally aired January 26 and 27, 2008.]In this episode, a listener says his friend Harold likes to do social phoning while driving, so he's invented a term for mindless calling while in the car. And no, it's not 'car-pe diem.' Also, Martha and Grant also discuss the rules of the road games 'padiddle' and 'slug bug.' Maybe you know it as 'perdiddle,' but a Wisconsinite shares memories of playing 'padiddle.' You need at least two people in a car, an oncoming vehicle with a headlight out, and, depending on which version of the game you play, you need to be prepared for kissing, punching, ceiling-thwacking, beer-buying, or stripping. Grant describes the Volkswagen-inspired of another road-trip game, 'slug bug.'A listener from Falmouth, Maine, disagrees with his Canadian friends about how to pronounce the word 'aunt.' He says it shouldn't sound like the name of the insect. But is that the way most people pronounce this word for your mother's sister?A Hoosier says her friends tease her about the way she says 'doofitty' when she can't think of the right word for something. Grant and Martha discuss the long list of linguistic placeholders, including 'whatchamacallit,' 'doodad,' 'deely-bobber,' 'doowanger,' 'doojigger,' 'doohickey,' 'thingamabob,' 'thingummy,' 'thingum,' and 'thingy.' A California man remembers going to the neighborhood bakery back home in Illinois and ordering 'bismarcks.' But these days he rarely hears this term for 'jelly doughnut,' and wonders about its origin. This week's Slang This! contestant guesses at the meaning of the slang expressions 'wigs on the green' and 'fake and bake.'Grant and Martha read emails from listeners with suggested explanations as to how the term 'biffy' came to mean 'portable toilet.' They also discuss listener's own stories about saying 'bread and butter' when companions step around an obstacle that divides them. Popeye does that little 'bread and butter' step about 5:47 into this clip that Martha was talking about.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0av3fmr0sDcWe also promised words for the experience of noticing a word for the first time and then feeling like you're seeing it everywhere. Here are a few: diegogarcity, the recency Illusion, and the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon.A retired professor wants to know if Latin grammar holds any clues about whether a female professor is properly addressed as 'professor emeritus' or 'professor emerita.'Finally, a woman who grew up playing 'Duck, Duck, Goose' is surprised to hear that her niece and nephew play 'Duck, Duck, Gray Duck' at their preschool in Minnesota. The hosts take a gander at regional variations of this children's game. And with that, we're ducking out of here until next week.
