POPULARITY
Nein, The Who spielten, lieferten, produzierten. Die Energie kam der Band erst in den 80er Jahren abhanden, als sich alle verbliebenden Mitglieder auf Solowerke und -karrieren verlegten. Dennoch, The Who blieben gefragt, bei Live Aid spielten sie ebenso wie zu anderen Gelegenheiten. Noch war die Geschichte dieser besonderen britischen Band nicht zu Ende. Musique Mécanique par le Théâtre Électrique ::"Baba O'Riley" by The Who
“Generation Z.” “iGen.” “Centennials.” Whatever you happen to call this generation, the children who drew their first breaths in the years between Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” are the first generation of digital natives in human history. But how secure is the faith of these teenagers and young adults? And how can current church leaders help them to trust the truth of the Christian faith? That’s what apologetics professor and bestselling author Sean McDowell joins Timothy to talk about this week. Sean also acknowledges his little-known affection for keyboard synthesizers and the music of Depeche Mode. And, as always, Sean talks about superheroes, because he’s Sean McDowell and that’s what Sean McDowell does, because he’s amazing that way. The focus on teenagers persists into the second half of the episode as Garrick and Timothy look at a song that’s known to most people as “Teenage Wasteland,” mostly because most people only hear the song on classic rock radio stations. The real name of this tune from The Who is “Baba O’Riley.” Even though it’s one of the greatest productions in the history of rock and roll, the song is actually a leftover from an unfinished dystopian science fiction rock and roll opera. The opera was supposed to be called “Lifehouse,” and the story line that Pete Townshend of The Who sketched out for it in 1971 sounds suspiciously like a certain film from 1999 known as The Matrix. After listening to “Baba O’Riley,” your intrepid cohosts analyze the song’s eschatology and unearth the twisted history behind Pete Townshend’s penchant for smashing guitars, which can be traced back to a low ceiling in London and an artist named Gustav Metzger whose lectures were attended by members of Queen, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. Along the way, Garrick and Timothy realize that “going Gustav” is the perfect phrase to describe the smashing of a guitar on stage. Also, someone should totally name their guitar-smashing band “Göïng Güstäv.” This week’s Toybox Hero Tournament was so brutal that the dynamic duo was almost forced to change the rating of this episode. The contestant from Garrick’s family is a buffalo or a bison or some other sort of furry bovine that’s full of blood and meat and bones and various squishy physiological artifacts. (Garrick and Timothy are theologians not zoologists, folks. When it comes to the nuances that distinguish various mammals, they are basically clueless. They only remember which of their household creatures is a cat and which one is a hamster when the cat eats the hamster. Or the hamster eats the cat, whichever one it was that happened last week. Also, why hasn’t anyone ever named their rock band “Plätÿpüs”?) The other combatant is a lioness which inexplicably has a mane, suggesting that Timothy may need to have a discussion about feline gender roles with one of his children. The result of this sanguinary clash is much bloodletting and general pandemonium related to the toy animals that populate the Jones and Bailey households. The new cover art for this season was created by Dani Wallace (daniwallace.myportfolio.com). This Week’s Guest Sean McDowell earned his PhD in Apologetics and Worldview Studies from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is now professor of Christian Apologetics at Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. Sean is the author, co-author, or editor of over twenty books including The Fate of the Apostles, So The Next Generation Will Know, and Evidence that Demands a Verdict. Happy 2020 and thanks for joining us to kick off the New Year with episode 66! Emma’s tale brings us to the Amazon to introduce a Cryptid, The Mapingauri. It may be a distant cousin to Emma’s spirit animal, the sloth ;) Anish has a true crime story that — at first — he was going to pass on due the heinous acts committed. He discusses the Tool-Box Murders and the teenage victims of Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris. We also watched a lot of TV over the winter break: we have some commentary on the Mandalorian’s season finale, Lost in Space Season 2, The Witcher, Don’t F**k with Cats, You, and, last but not least, Zombieland! As for Liverpool, they returned to EPL action with 2 games and didn’t disappoint :) Send us your own suggestions/fun facts/stories through our gmail (everythinginpodcast@gmail.com) or through our website (www.everythingpodcast.weebly.com)! This week we’re going way back to the legendary January 17, 1992 show -- AKA “Vault #1.” In fact, this is the earliest show we’ve covered on the podcast so far! The band trekked across North America in support of Ten throughout the Fall and early Winter of 1991. After a two-week break in the beginning of January 1992, the boys returned to Seattle for a homecoming show at the legendary Moore Theatre. The band sounds incredible from start to finish. Ed’s voice is in perfect shape after 14 days off and the entire band seems to be relaxed and loving the atmosphere of playing in front of an energetic hometown crowd of about 1,350. The footage used in the “Even Flow” music video was professionally filmed at this show, while a number of famous early photos by Lance Mercer were captured here as well. A rough audience recording of the show was all that existed among bootleg collections for nearly 20 years, until the band decided to open up the mysterious “Vault” in 2011. A remastered version of the original recording was circulated at the PJ20 festival, much to the delight of diehard fans and those aware of the magic of this show. Single CDs in cardboard sleeves simply titled “VAULT #1” were distributed at the destination weekend. This show also marked the first time the band covered The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” although the song is omitted from the vault recording. John Farrar and Chris Buckley team up to host their first show together, exploring this early performance that offers a glimpse into the band’s early era and formative years just before they exploded to superstardom. In this special episode of Three Chords and the Truth: The Apologetics Podcast, Timothy Paul Jones and Garrick Bailey join the student ministry at Five Oaks Church, which gathers near the metropolis of Minneapolis in the wild and crazy land of Minnesota. Students from Five Oaks ask questions about how God created the cosmos, how Moses found out about the creation of the world, whether Jesus was really raised from the dead, how the books of the Bible were selected, and how a good God can allow evil. Timothy allows one question from someone who may not be a Minnesotan, which leads to a heated debate over the popularity of the name “Agnes” in the vast tracts of trees, tundra, and lakes that constitute America’s Great North. Along the way, the student minister from Five Oaks answers a question from the Infinity Gauntlet, and the students are shocked to discover that their leader likes Superman, "Baba O'Riley," and "Bohemian Rhapsody" but can't stand America. A new giveaway in partnership with Kyser Musical Products provides you with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win one of four limited-edition capos---unless you're not a guitar player, in which case these are not capos but the most amazing clips for your family-sized bags of tortilla chips that you could ever imagine. Is the creation story metaphorical or did Moses describe it exactly the way it happened? How do we know the Bible's creation story is true if it is written by someone who did not witness it? 3. How can we know that Jesus actually died on the cross and rose from the dead? What about the hallucination hypothesis? 4. How is Christianity different from other religions? 5. Who chose which books and letters that would comprise the Bible? Why is it that the Roman Catholic Old Testament is different from the Old Testament in Protestant Bibles? 6. Our episode this week is from where? Tampa. You got it. And although we lose Matt to the injured list once again this week, we're able to get an excellent fill in at the hands of Patreon donor Eddie Quintana who joined us to discuss his first show. First shows are interesting, what do you want and what do you expect out of them? Well, for one you want the hits. Check mark on that because the band didn't just bust out the hits, nearly all of them were home runs. Secondly, it would be nice to see something that might be a little rare at your first show. In The Moonlight, Getaway, Love Boat Captain – those are all pretty nice gets. Top it off with a few covers like Imagine, Sonic Reducer and Baba O'Riley and you'll be begging for the next tour to come around so you can get your next dose of all that awesomeness. The best thing to come out of this show happens to be an incredible story that happened to a fan named Bill Castrovince. Bill went on the Pearl Jam pages and requested the band to play Hard To Imagine that night. Anyone who knows the band knows that they only take requests when those requests are incredibly meaningful and this was precisely that. We're proud to share Bill's story of perseverance and inspiration on this episode and it's a story that you won't want to miss. Also on this show, we announce the winner of our listener's choice episode contest! Stay tuned until the end of the show to see who the big winner is! This week The Voice of ironman, Mike Reilly, returns to the show to talk about his new book, Finding My Voice. Mike has been the announcer at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii for almost 40 years. His iconic greeting, "You Are An Ironman", has welcomed over 350,000 finishers across the line at more than 180 ironman races worldwide. Now, Mike has decided to put pen to paper and share some of his favourite stories from the last 40 years. When you read this book be prepared to laugh, cry, be amazed and inspired. As you can imagine we covered a lot of ground including: How Ironman competitors are Reilly’s 2nd family, and what it’s like to have your family show up at every race Ironman, and why it’s not about what you did but who you became When the normally quiet and introverted Ironman World Champion gave Mike’s 7 year old son Andy his sweaty, smelly race shoes that he wore when winning Ironman Australia a few days before MIke’s walk-on music "Baba O’Riley” by The Who, and the bet that got out of hand “That" moment when you ask your best mate to stand in on the mic while you take a comfort break Sarah Reinertson, Scott Rigsby, and the inspiration of the para-athletes Why triathlon and Ironman in particular is a metaphor for life and the way you live your life To find out more about Mike Reilly and to purchase his book, Finding My Voice please go to mikereilly.net o find out more about Simon’s coaching please visit his website here. Pop Art Painter Jamie Roxx (www.JamieRoxx.us) welcomes DC4 (MEGAROCK) to the Show! artistecard.com/DC4 ‘Atomic Highway’ is nothing short of the riveting performance fans have come to expect from DC4. With guitarists Jeff Duncan and Rowan Robertson's guitar hero solos, Jeff's fierce vocals, the thunderous rhythms of Shawn Duncan and Matt Duncan combined with hooky and energetic songwriting, MEGAROCK may be the only way to describe DC4. ‘Atomic Highway’ also features guest appearances by John Bush Armored Saint, Anthrax) and Dizzy Reed (Guns N Roses, Hookers and Blow), on the incredible cover of ‘The Who’ classic "Baba O’ Riley". Same band. Same lineup. We love playing long epic rock songs. Here’s our live version and arrangement of The Who’s classic “Baba O’ Riley” before we recorded it in early 2004 as a promo cd. Enjoy
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie by Alanis Morissette. It's the Phantom Menace of Alanis albums! 1998's Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie was Alanis' followup to her massively successful Jagged Little Pill, and it's… not so good. Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. It's finally here! Alanis Morissette's 1995 album Jagged Little Pill is not only the opening salvo of the New Alanis™ after her first few pop albums, it's also her most successful album to date. As if that weren't enough, it's also the #11 top-selling album of all time, ever, worldwide (according to this Wikipedia list). That said, it's a really good album. Almost certainly the best one we've listened to in more than 30 episodes of TOtBS. We did some nitpicking about the lyrics, and about the harmonica (oh, god, the harmonica playing) but this album is really good. Listen along to Jagged Little Pill here.
