Show #470 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 13th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA MODEL Y PRODUCTION WILL CREATE A BATTERY SHORTAGE "Tesla’s main battery supplier and partner in Gigafactory 1 says that the start of Model Y production next year will result in a battery cell shortage at the factory." according to an Electrek article today: "During Panasonic’s latest earnings report, CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga said that they plan to ramp up to the full 35 GWh this year. After that, the CEO said that they need to talk to Tesla. He said that there’s currently not enough capacity to supply Tesla’s expanding business and especially the upcoming production of the Model Y" He said "“Batteries will run out if Tesla starts to sell the Model Y and expands its business next year. What will we do then? It’s one of a few topics to discuss with Tesla, including battery [production] in China.” User jpo234: "Panasonic is losing money from their GF1 investment. They are tightening the screws to get a better deal from Tesla." User ben says: "Tesla is known for bringing manufacturing in-house. If Panasonic has not performed to musks exacting standards, they're out on future expansions of GF1. Tesla will do it themselves, with new tech (Maxwell) that will be more dense boosting gigafactories theoretical capacity above 135 GW/yr." https://electrek.co/2019/05/13/tesla-model-y-production-battery-shortage-panasonic/ TESLA OWNERS MAY BE ABLE TO OPT FOR A THIRD-PARTY EXTENDED WARRANTY "As the Tesla fleet grows (and ages), it's helpful to know there are additional options (just in case) to care for an out-of-warranty Model 3, Model S, Model X or Roadster. It turns out that X-Care EV Protection is now offering the nation’s first third-party extended warranty for Tesla owners." says InsideEVs.com today: "X-Care is meant to mirror Tesla’s own extended service agreement it offers customers – it covers nearly everything the automaker’s extended warranty does. While Tesla restricts its own coverage exclusively to customers who buy Tesla vehicles from the automaker, X-Care can be offered by any auto retailer and can be used to cover any Tesla. The warranty, provided by Xcelerate Auto, also fills a gap left open by traditional providers in the industry, who have been reluctant to cover electric vehicles. Without decades of data regarding reliability and repair costs, other companies have interpreted the electric vehicles as too big of a risk." https://insideevs.com/news/349254/tesla-third-party-extended-warranty/ CEO OF HONDA OUTLINES NEW CHALLENGES Honda Motor Co.’s president and CEO Takahiro Hachigo recently spoke about two of the automaker’s management challenges it will be tackling going forward to meet the rapid changes happening in the global automotive industry. In terms of electrification, Honda is still on track to reach its goal to electrify two-thirds of its global automobile unit sales by 2030. "At Honda, in light of the required infrastructure and how people use automobiles, we believe that hybrid technology is, at this moment, the most effective way for us to comply with CAFE standards. Therefore, we will electrify our products mainly with hybrid technologies. By increasing sales of our hybrid models all around the world, Honda will contribute to the global environment through the improvement of fuel economy.”" ASTON MARTIN’S FIRST EV MAKES DYNAMIC DEBUT AT MONACO EPRIX "Aston Martin chose the Formula E Monaco ePrix as the setting to provide its first all-electric model its dynamic debut." says carkeys.co.uk: "Piloted by Aston Martin works driver Darren Turner, the model took part in two on-track sessions throughout the day. The twin rear-mounted electric motors produce 604bhp and 950Nm of torque, which makes the new electric Aston Martin the quickest version of the Rapide ever made, and even more so than the 6.0-litre V12 that typically lies underneath the model’s bonnet. Just 155 Rapide Es are being built, as the luxury saloon’s production run draws to a close, as Aston Martin begins to develop its Lagonda brand, which is set to be the firm’s electric subsidiary. Production of the model will start later in the year at Aston Martin Lagonda’s new production facility in St Athan, Wales." https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/aston-martin-s-first-ev-makes-dynamic-debut-at-monaco-eprix HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VS. BATTERY ELECTRIC CARS: WHICH ARE BETTER? "While electric cars appear to have the edge in today’s environment, a number of manufacturers are still committed to hydrogen fuel cell cars - meaning that the technology may one day find its place in the motoring world. Green technology news site CleanTechnica claims that hydrogen fuel cell cars are “several years behind battery electric vehicles in terms of innovation”, which is why they’re so expensive to own and run." report The Week: "Given enough time and money, hydrogen vehicles may become the more accessible option for “our kids or grandkids”, the website says. But electric cars are evolving at a rapid rate, too, and more environmentally-friendly battery options may open up in the future. For now, though, electric cars appear to be the go-to mode of transport for those looking to do their part in cutting emissions." https://www.theweek.co.uk/electric-cars/101196/hydrogen-fuel-cell-vs-battery-electric-cars-which-are-better NORWEGIAN AUDI E-TRON CUSTOMERS DELAYED AND FINED "As the delivery rollout of the Audi e-tron begins, reservation holders in Norway have begun to complain about the additional delays that they are facing. One customer attempted to cancel his order, for which he was presented with a fine for breaking contract." says electrive.com: "The customer who reported the fine, had initially been incensed about an additional 6 month waiting period, on top of the existing delay. When he then attempted to cancel his reservation, he was told that to do so, he would have to pay 8% of the value of the vehicle for the inconvenience. Depending on the model variant chosen, this would be a price between $5,920 and $6,800." https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/13/audi-e-tron-customers-delayed-and-fined/ VW: HOW ELECTRIC ROADS WORK Zero carbon footprint, quieter vehicles, good driveability and no exhaust emissions. Continuous charging along electric roads has huge potential for heavy transport. On a busy highway, a truck with trailer is approaching a long section with pylons on the right side. The vehicle’s sensor detects that the traffic lane is now equipped with an electric contact line, and the driver pushes a button to raise a pantograph fitted on the cab’s roof. Within seconds, the cab turns almost completely silent: the combustion engine has stopped, and the electrical motor now powers the vehicle. This is how it works: Finding the eHighway A sensor checks whether the traffic lane is equipped with a contact line. Until now the truck has been powered by the combustion engine. Now, the driver raises the pantograph. Connects to the contact line When connected, the pantograph transfers the energy directly to the electric motor, simultaneously charging the battery. During braking, electricity is generated as the flow of energy is reversed, charging the on-board battery. Disconnects when overtaking When the truck is overtaking or is at the end of an electrified section, the pantograph lowers itself. The electrical motor continues to run on battery power for as long as possible. After overtaking the driver can return to the eHighway. SHELL BUILDS HPCS IN GERMANY "Shell is starting to build high power chargers at its gas stations in Germany. This year, the oil company plans to build 50 charging stations across the country, with a total of 100 charging points and a capacity of at least 150 kilowatts. Further charging stations are to follow." according to electrive: "Shell has brought EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg, an utility in Germany’s south, on board as a partner for the charging network initiative. They plan to install high power charging stations with CCS, CHAdeMO and an AC connection (type 2), which will each provide up to 150 kW for up to two vehicles charging simultaneously and up to 300 kW when only one car is charging. According to the media reports, locations in Cologne, Oberhausen and Munich are planned" https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/13/shell-to-build-50-hpcs-before-the-year-is-out/ DAIMLER'S NEXT CEO WILL PUSH ALLIANCES TO CUT COSTS "Daimler will cut development costs of new Mercedes-Benz cars by a significant amount by 2025 and will intensify alliances with rivals as a way to improve margins, Ola Kaellenius, the future chief executive, said on Monday." reports Autoblog today: ""The cost structure of the electric car is above that of the combustion engine car. We are working hard on lowering this," Kaellenius, who is due to take over from Dieter Zetsche after the company's annual general meeting on May 22, said. Daimler is also relying on increasing economies of scale for electric car batteries as a way to drive down costs. It is also working to cut the use of expensive raw materials from electric car batteries. The carmaker wants to reduce the use of cobalt in electric car batteries." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/13/daimler-ceo-alliance-ola-kaellenius/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. You know I talk about the carrot and the stick, in terms of what is needed to persuade people into EVs? We have the carrot here in the UK with £3500 off a new EV, but I also talk about the success of Norway using the stick. Hitting people with penalties to buy fossil cars. Now today in the UK there's a story about putting up tax on petrol to push people into considering alternatives. More tomorrow. DAIMLER, GEELY CREATE 50:50 JOINT VENTURE TO DEVELOP SMART The Daimler-owned Smart brand is something which hasn't been a huge commercial success and yet they've kept investing in it, and more recently, electrifying it. Most famous for making small cars it is being given a new lease of life. "Daimler is willing to give the brand another shot by teaming up with Lotus and Volvo owner Geely to transform Smart into a pure EV brand. Announced today, the deal involving Daimler and Geely represents a 50:50 joint venture in China where a new factory will be built to handle production of zero-emissions models." Says Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com today: "These future cars will be styled by Mercedes and engineered by Geely, with the first models scheduled to hit the market globally from 2022. Interestingly, aside from ditching combustion engines altogether, the Smart brand will expand into the B-segment, which means the next decade will bring us subcompact cars from a brand exclusively known for its cutesy A-segment cars." Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: “For more than 2.2 million customers, smart represents a pioneer in urban mobility. Based on this success story, we look forward to further enhancing the brand with Geely Holding, a strong partner in the electric vehicle segment. We will jointly design and develop the next generation of smart electric cars that combine high-quality production and known safety standards for sale both in China and globally." https://www.motor1.com/news/315724/daimler-geely-joint-venture-smart/ BMW WILL BUILD MINI ELECTRIC IN UK DESPITE BREXIT CONCERNS "Despite a number of carmakers saying that they’ll pull out of Britain when Brexit eventually happens BMW is pushing ahead with plans to produce the all-electric Mini over here. According to Automotive News Europe, BMW isn’t planning to implement any major changes to any of its plans in the UK – including the Oxford factory which is earmarked for electric Mini assembly." reports InsideEVs.com today: "The manufacturer is anticipating zero to five percent tariffs on goods if Britain leaves the EU without a deal, something that “won’t change Mini’s business model”. However, BMW’s chief executive officer Harald Krueger has warned that BMW could still move production to countries like the Netherlands at some point in the future should problems arise further down the line. The first electric Mini has been slated to begin production this year, and will become available worldwide, including the US where there is a possibility the brand could become electric-only in the coming years in a bid to boost sales." https://insideevs.com/bmw-build-mini-electric-uk/ SMOKING BMW I8 DUMPED IN WATER BY FIREFIGHTERS A tweet from the Fire Department in the Netherlands: "This morning an electric car started to smoke in a showroom. The employees of the garage and the fire brigade acted quickly to drive the car outside. Because it is an electric car, inventive action was necessary. The car is immersed in a container of water because extinguishing it in the 'normal' way is difficult with these cars. The car will remain in the water basin for the next 24 hours." Chris Bruce at Motor1 raises a good point though: "What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. Plus, if the BMW were already in flames, picking it up and placing the coupe into container doesn't seem safe. What's not clear is whether this is the fire department's usual reaction to an electrified vehicle fire. Traveling with a crane and giant water tank doesn't seem very convenient. R will take on another special challenge in September 2019. Romain Dumas (F) will be back at the wheel of the 500-kW electric sports car for the “China Challenge” on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road – a unique stretch of tarmac, featuring 99 corners, which winds its way up Tianmen Mountain, located roughly 1,500 kilometres southwest of Beijing. As no official record exists for the eleven-kilometre mountain road, which is not accessible to public transport, Volkswagen China will run a competition prior to the record attempt, in which participants can set their own virtual time on the Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road. Dumas will then attempt to better the time of the fastest participant under real conditions in September. The Volkswagen ID. R, with which Romain Dumas set records at two famous hill climbs in June 2018 – first at the “Pikes Peak International Hill Climb” and then at the “Goodwood Festival of Speed” – is powered by two electric engines generating a total output of 500 kW (680 PS) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.25 seconds. Before travelling to China in September, Dumas and the record-breaking ID. R will first set their sights on a new lap record for electric cars on the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife. FIRST MERCEDES-BENZ ECITARO STARTS SERVICE IN BERLIN "Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has received the first out of 15 ordered all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses." reports InsideEVs.com: "The other thing is that Mercedes-Benz eCitaro currently is equipped with batteries of 243 kWh, which is enough only for 150 km (93 miles)." It's good news, but here's the context: Last autumn, BVG placed an order for up to 950 low-emission Mercedes‑Benz Citaro buses. It is the largest single order ever for Europe’s best-selling city bus. At almost the same time, BVG also ordered 15 fully-electric eCitaro buses. https://insideevs.com/mercedes-benz-ecitaro-berlin/ TESLA'S MUSK POKES FUN AT RAM TRUCKS 'PUNY' TOWING ABILITY Dodge Ram Owner @RamLover69 You would still be physically fatigued if you tried to haul 12,000 lbs of steel beams like I do every day with my Dodge Ram, 2019s motor trend truck of the year. @elonmusk 12,000 lbs!? SEAT ELECTRIC STRATEGY INCLUDSE SIX ELECTRIC The electric version of the Mii and el-Born will be the brand’s first two fully electric models, while the new generation Leon and the Tarraco will feature a plug-in hybrid version. Furthermore, the CUPRA Leon and the CUPRA Formentor will also have a plug-in hybrid variant. SEAT President Luca de Meo also announced today at the company’s annual media conference that the CUPRA Formentor, the new CUV that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, will be built at the Martorell factory. For the first time in the history of the company, SEAT will develop a new vehicle platform in collaboration with the Volkswagen brand, a smaller version of the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) on which multiple vehicles of the size of around four metres in length by different brands, SEAT among them, will be made. The goal of the new platform is to develop affordable electric vehicles, with an entry level price below 20,000 euros. More than 300 highly skilled engineers will be participating in this project in Spain. https://www.seat-mediacenter.com/newspage/allnews/company/2019/SEAT-will-launch-six-electric-and-plug-in-hybrid-models-and-develop-a-new-platform-in-Spain-for-electric-vehicles.html GAC AION S IS EQUIPPED WITH 58.8 KWH CATL NCM 811 BATTERY "The GAC New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. (GAC NE), the newest arm of GAC, recently announced specifications for the upcoming Aion S all-electric sedan, scheduled for market launch in China in May 2019." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The car, which was by GAC compared to the Tesla Model 3, is equipped with the latest NCM 811 battery cells supplied by CATL. The total capacity is 58.8 kWh, which should be enough for 510 km (317 miles) under NEDC. In the real world, we would expect more than 350 km (218 miles) of range." https://insideevs.com/gac-aion-s-58-8-kwh-catl-ncm-811-battery/ RENAULT SEEKS MERGER WITH NISSAN AND FCA Partnerships among the world’s automakers appear to be increasing, be it a win-win collaboration on technology or a full-blown merger. The latest report from Automotive News Europe suggests the latter, this time between Renault and Nissan that would eventually include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as well. The information comes from a report in Financial Times (subscription required) that cites anonymous sources allegedly in the know about the deal on both sides of the fence." according to Motor1.com: "During the tenure of FCA’s former boss Sergio Marchionne, there were more than a few rumors regarding mergers and purchases, primarily with Chinese automakers. This new report speaks of a freshly merged Renault-Nissan company seeking to acquire FCA as well, ultimately creating a large corporation with enough clout to compete with the likes of Toyota and Volkswagen. In this scenario from Finacial Times, a Renault-Nissan alliance would go after FCA within 12 months" https://www.motor1.com/news/315686/renault-seeks-merger-nissan-fca/ And finally thanks to Fredrik who sent me a link to a site which tracks the VIN numbers and registrations in Norway...
Done By 1 Media — Big, luxurious & German. That’s basically what this episode of firsts is about! Dr. Dieter Zetsche talks about Mercedes-Benz's first production electric vehicle, the EQC. Not to be outdone, Audi have also launched their first EV, the e-Tron. We chat about both before jumping into our first ever test car for a review of the BMW 640i xDrive GT.
Daimler AG is strongly represented at the RISE Conference, taking place from 9 to 12 July 2018 in Hong Kong. As part of the “discussion session”, Dieter Zetsche will explain the cultural differences which are reflected in customers’ varying wishes in Asia, Europe and the USA. He will also describe how artificial intelligence helps suppliers to respond more appropriately to the individual needs of the customer.

Hardtalk is in Stuttgart, Germany - a city with a long history of engineering and manufacturing. The auto industry is a major player here, which is good news for Stuttgart as long as the German car industry continues to thrive. Stephen Sackur speaks to Dieter Zetsche, the boss of Daimler, a company with a global reputation and the makers of Mercedes-Benz cars. However, over the past decade they have made some costly mistakes and they still face major challenges, not least the push for greener more efficient vehicles. Daimler has a proud reputation, but does it have a bright future?
Fiat reached a deal with the Canadian government to buy its stake in Chrysler which makes the Italian automaker the majority owner in Chrysler. Saab announced that it's postponing production once more. Some Ford Raptor owners are complaining that they have managed to bend the frames of their trucks which obviously should not be happening. All that and more, plus a preview of this week's Autoline about classic cars in Cuba.
In this special Annual Forum episode of ESMTcast "90 seconds with...", Daimler AG CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche states his belief that Daimler is positioned to lead the automotive industry out of the current financial crisis. Because sustainability in the automotive industry means heading towards two main goals, emission-free driving and accident-free driving, Daimler also continue to invest heavily in research and development of future technologies despite shrinking consumer demand in the sector. Navigating through the current financial crisis, Dr Zetsche seeks strong future leaders and maintains that Daimlers success will depend on its personnel and the result of the team. On recruiting from ESMT, he says that the programs offer a good balance of high-level business and economic understanding, as well as personal management skills with focus on responsibility for sustainability.

The toughest leadership task for Dieter Zetsche chairman of the board of management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars was engineering last year's breakup of Daimler and Chrysler. But the experience taught him valuable lessons such as the importance of making timely decisions and the need to avoid information overload. Leadership Zetsche told his audience during a recent Wharton Leadership Lecture isn't always ”fun and games.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
