Set Apart to Serve: Vicarage for Pastoral Formation

The Coffee Hour from KFUO Radio

Why is the vicarage year such an important part of pastoral formation in the LCMS? The Rev. David Nehrenz, President of the LCMS Oklahoma District, joins Andy and Sarah for our Set Apart to Serve series to share his journey into the Holy Ministry. He discusses his current vocation as District President, reflects on how his own vicarage was a formative experience, and talks about the vicars he has supervised over the years. Rev. Nehrenz also explains what a typical vicarage year looks like for seminarians, the importance of the relationships that form between vicars and their congregations, and the ways he has seen vicars grow during this year of experience. Learn more about the LCMS Oklahoma District at oklahomalutherans.org. Christ's church will continue until He returns, and that church will continue to need church workers. Set Apart to Serve (SAS) is an initiative of the LCMS to recruit church workers. Together, we pray for workers for the Kingdom of God and encourage children to consider church work vocations. Here are three easy ways you can participate in SAS: 1. Pray with your children for God to provide church workers. 2. Talk to your children about becoming church workers. 3. Thank God for the people who work in your congregation. To learn more about Set Apart to Serve, visit lcms.org/set-apart-to-serve. Have a topic you'd like to hear about on The Coffee Hour? Prior Approval in the LCMS: the Need for Transparency and Trust

The prior approval process for LCMS leaders lacks transparency and is creating distrust and division when qualified candidates are removed without explanation. Family dysfunction in the church is exacerbated when decisions are made without clarity.Pat Ferry, Bill Cario, and Tim Ahlman discuss the topic at length:• Two distinct processes exist for presidents versus theology faculty appointments• Presidential approval requires sign-off from two of three key leaders: LCMS President, District President, and CUS board chair• Theology faculty approvals follow a different, increasingly unclear process• Concordia Wisconsin's presidential search illustrates the challenges when preferred candidates are rejected without explanation• Leaders advocate for transparency while maintaining appropriate church oversight• Relational trust is broken when decisions are made without discussing rationales• Worship practices and associations may impact eligibility without explicit guidelines• The process has evolved over decades with decreasing clarity in recent yearsWe need to continue working together for greater transparency. If we're going to break down walls between us, even little ones, we have to work at it together.Support the showJoin the Lead Time Newsletter! This section concludes the narrative which began in chapter 11. Namely, the 10th and final plague is completed, YHWH is fully victorious over the false gods of the Egyptians, and Pharaoh lets the Hebrews go. Israel's 430 years of sojourning in Egypt have come to an end and Moses is vindicated. Unleavened bread appears again as a sign, this time of haste. Will there now be no more hardships for God's people? It's the true story of God reaching down into history and, through an unlikely prophet, redeeming his chosen people from slavery. It's the story of Exodus, but it's also the story of us all. How through Christ, God has liberated us from sin, death, and the Devil. In the district policy, teachers are instructed to stay mum when a student would like to be called a different name or gender, giving specific instructions on how to hide this from parents. Chambers discusses the legality of such an initiative, and Giordano points out how this both hurts relationships between parents and children and the potential for learning. (Photo by Getty Images)

Rev. Dr. Brian Saunders, District President of the Iowa East District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study Matthew 19:1-15. The Pharisees were testing Jesus to trip him up concerning divorce by misquoting the Bible. Divorce has affected all of us and the sin that has caused it leaves a trail of pain. Jesus brings them back to the beginning by showing that marriage is a gift from the LORD of a husband and wife. The life of the Christian is a life of repentance and forgiveness and the same applies to the married couple. The most important three words in a Christian marriage is not “I love you” but “I forgive you.” The married couple, those who have been divorced, the extended family, the single person all live in the hope not in our strength or perfection, but in the forgiveness won for us in Christ. “Lord God, keep us steadfast in Your Word. Thank you for the gift of marriage that reflects Your love for the church and uplifts us in body and soul. Bless all marriages to holiness, give healing to those affected by divorce, and grant us the gift of repentance that we may receive Your forgiveness and live holy lives by word and deed. In Christ, Amen”

Rev. Terry Forke, District President of the Montana District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study Matthew 16:13-28. God the Father reveals the truth of Christ to Peter and us: He is the Christ the Son of the Living God. He is the Messiah proclaimed from the beginning (Genesis 3:15). He is the Son of the living God (Matthew 3:17 & Psalm 18:46) who will fulfill all that the LORD has promised. This confession reveals that Christ is our rock, He will build the church, and the devil will never overcome Christ's forgiveness, life, and salvation. Christians are not in a defensive position, but we boldly confess the truth of this living Christ and the gates of heaven are wide open by His cross and empty tomb. “O Holy Spirit, lead us to repent so that we may be loosed from our sins by our rock, our living LORD, Jesus Christ. Help us to receive this forgiveness from our pastor in confidence that it is true also in heaven. O Holy Spirit enter in, Amen”

Weaponized Vice How often have you heard people say that all sins are equal? If that's the case, committing genocide is the moral equivalent of copying your friend's homework in fifth grade. Yes, both are sins. Yes, both can be mortal sins if one doesn't repent. Yes, both break the commandments (the former the fifth, the latter the seventh) - and yes, someone is going to point out that other commandments are involved here too. But even the most dogmatic Lutheran will be forced to admit that there are indeed worse sins than others. There is a category of sin that is known as “vice.” Vices are sinful personal failings that are not acts of aggression against someone else. One could call them “victimless” crimes. And yes, I realize that there are unintended “victims” of vices (such as family members of a father with a gambling addiction) - but there is a categorical difference between a man who physically rapes a woman vs. a passing lustful thought. Even the most doctrinaire Lutheran would probably not want people jailed or sent to the gallows for gossip or for coveting thy neighbor's Mercedes. There is a danger that Pharisaic people make a big deal out of vices for the purpose of pointing to their own self-righteousness. A teetotaler may enjoy gossiping about the crowd gathered in the bar for happy hour. Someone with no interest in gambling may scowl at the betting going on at horse races. The war on vices has led to blue laws and even national alcohol prohibition, not to mention the horrific unintended consequences of the War on Drugs. Censorship has now come full circle and is being used to stifle the free speech of conservatives and Christians. Examples of vice abound. Every family and every community have examples of those who go a little overboard with the drinking. Aunt Sally may not be face down in the ditch, but maybe she has one or two too many and begins to embarrass herself. Your brother in law Bill may foolishly blow his tax refund at the casino, but he's a young single guy with a lot of money, so it's not that big a deal. Nobody is calling for his excommunication or for a police investigation. And in days past, everyone had an uncle who was unmarried, who always seemed to have a close male friend hanging around, who went out to bars on the weekend. Everybody knew that he had same-sex attraction issues, but nobody berated him for it, but neither did anyone condone it. So, he wasn't ostracized from the family - he was your uncle after all - but neither did he bring up sodomy at the Thanksgiving table. There was a social arrangement. And as long as he stayed away from underage young men, there was a sense of tolerance toward his vice. The pastor may have even given him communion because his sexual proclivities were so well hidden that he genuinely didn't know. Or maybe your gay uncle knew that this was a sinful lifestyle. Maybe he even confessed to the pastor and struggled against this sin - you wouldn't know because it's none of your business, and the pastor probably knows more than you think he does. But we live in a different era. It is as if everything before 2015 was the age of black and white television and Marcus Welby doling out paternal advice on “Father Knows Best.” Today, homosexuality is no longer considered by society as a whole to be a vice, but a virtue. It is a point of pride. It is socially celebrated without exception in movies, TV, music, and every aspect of popular culture. There are local holidays and lurid celebratory parades. It is venerated by mental health professionals and politicians, and now the celebrated category even includes people with sexual fetishes, gender dysphoria, and a host of subjective sexual issues. But nearly every sexual vice has been metamorphized into being the the moral equivalent of, if not the superior to, heterosexuality. At this point, even pedophilia and bestiality are losing their stigma. And there is a concerted effort to normalize sexual deviancy even to pre-school children. I recently saw a back-and-forth on social media between a rostered LCMS male teacher at a Lutheran high school whose FB profile includes a pro-LGBT statement and the six-color rainbow. He also happens to champion Critical Race Theory. When he was challenged on it, he did not address the questions, but simply retorted that “there are gay members of the LCMS” and that people “seem awfully hung up on one sin out of millions.” He never answered the question about whether this view of sexuality was congruent with the Scriptures. He ended up just deleting the thread. In this day and age when Critical Theory and the endorsement and celebration of violations of the Sixth Commandment have become the norm in the secular world, parents who don't want their children “educated” in this manner either homeschool or put their children in Christian schools. They especially turn to LCMS institutions, given our confession of the infallibility of Scripture and the role of the Word of God as the “norming norm” to which we unconditionally submit. For this is not the case with denomination after denomination that has surrendered to the world. So why do we have a rostered teacher who is openly flouting and celebrating adultery? That's what homosexuality and other sexual proclivities celebrated by the secular culture are according to our Small Catechism. Sexuality is a matter of holy matrimony - between one man and one woman for life. In the church, we don't wave flags celebrating divorce. We don't throw a party when a man is unfaithful to his wife. We don't tell an unrepentant woman that she is “courageous” for admitting that she cheats on her husband and has no intention of stopping. We don't have a parade to laud people for looking at pornography. But the vice is now a virtue. It is no longer a vice. This alternative morality, this rejection of Scripture, is being normalized even in our churches. We had at least one Concordia in our university system that had a student club dedicated to the breaking of the Sixth Commandment: an adultery club that met with the blessing of the former university president. Why not a pro-abortion club? Why not a club dedicated to profaning the name of God? Why not a club dedicated to character assassination? Why not a club mocking the idea of church attendance? This teacher's line of reasoning that the Sixth Commandment is being treated differently than all the others is actually true. One could not imagine him promoting Atheism or lusting after his neighbor's wife or committing acts of aggression against other people or even killing them - without incurring the ire of the school's administration or the District President. But this teacher's advocacy of adultery - specifically the socially acceptable variation of sexual inclinations and behaviors that are not heterosexual - seems to be just fine. What we are seeing all around us is weaponized vice. The old social contract of not persecuting your “happy” uncle so long as he was not making it public and keeping his activities between consenting adults has been torn up. Now, your uncle is on a rampage. He will compel business owners to violate their consciences. He will sue them and harass them. He will show up at your church with his friends and protest outside. He will call you names and make you out to be the moral reprobate. He will dox you at your job and try to render you impoverished and socially ostracized. Some of his friends will insist on their right to expose their genitals to women and girls in a spa. He will argue in court for the right of school children to use whatever bathrooms and dressing rooms that they like, and will argue that you parents have no say in the matter. He will make sure that the virtue of violating the Sixth Commandment makes its way to children's TV shows, cereal boxes, and even on the flagpole at the hospital where Christian families may be dealing with illness in the family. He will make sure that his flag flies alongside of national and historical flags - even at American embassies. He will successfully agitate so that federal government jobs include a day set apart to honor the violation of the Sixth Commandment and that all employees will take part. Any Christian who so much as winces will be written up or fired. And now, he will also insist that rostered LCMS teachers celebrate the breaking of the Sixth Commandment, and the school administration and the District President will either pretend not to see it or openly support it. In time, we will get new pastors and seminary professors who will read the Sixth Commandment - and all of the Bible - with a different hermeneutic, one befitting of a hashtag campaign. In time, our churches will redefine marriage to conform to the state and to the New Orthodoxy. And whatever pockets of resistance that are left will just be marginalized and bulldozed over. And who's to say the Nine Commandments in our catechism won't become the Eight Commandments, or the Two Commandments, or the Zero Commandments? We either hold to our confession, or we change it. He either hold our RSOs and DP's accountable, or we will not. We either believe the Holy Scriptures and submit to them, or we don't.

On Genuflecting By Larry Beane,   The ceremony of genuflecting at the altar is a particular ceremony that some people deride as “Too Catholic.” Genuflecting is what is commonly called “taking a knee.” It is a kind of kneeling in which one drops to only one knee, probably in the interest of time to be able to get back up quickly - especially for pastors who become long in the tooth often at a rate exceeding that of the laity. When it comes to kneeling, sometimes the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. For many of us d'un certain âge, bowing from the waist down is a more practical way of carrying out this ceremony. But you young guys should be able to genuflect and rise again with no trouble, or else you need to hit the glucosamine and chondroiten, if not the gym. When I was the campus pastor of a high school, one of my duties was to lead the football team in the Lord's Prayer in the end zone, after the coach called out the rubric: “Take a knee, guys!”. Kneeling is a posture of prayer, of humility, and of worship of God. It is a ceremony that is appropriate at certain times in our liturgy. According to our shared confession in the Book of Concord, the purpose of ceremonies is that people may be “taught what they need to know about Christ” (AC 24:3). And if Roman Catholics and Anglicans genuflect before the altar, but Baptists, Methodists, the Reformed, and Non-Denominational Christians do not, what is the ceremony (or lack of ceremony) teaching? Indeed, it would be incongruent for a Baptist minister to pronounce the Words of Institution and then genuflect after the words pertaining to each element. This is because Baptists believe that Christ is not present, that the elements are only symbolic. Roman Catholics and (at least some) Anglicans believe that Jesus is miraculously and physically present in the Sacrament. So which ceremony (genuflecting or not genuflecting) makes more sense for the Lutheran consecration? What does genuflecting during the consecration teach about Christ? Kneeling is an act of worship. Angels forbade kneeling before them because they are not worthy of worship (Rev 19:10, 22:8-9). We are to worship God alone (Matt 9:10). The wise men “fell down and worshipped” the baby Jesus (Matt 2:11) - with the word for worship (προσκυνὲω) being more than just an intellectual acknowledgement of his divinity. The word means to worship with the body, by kneeling or prostrating oneself, in the presence of God. A Baptist minister who confesses that the elements are only symbolic would - in his own mind and confession - be guilty of idolatry were he to genuflect before that which is merely a creature and not the Creator. Lutherans - along with Roman Catholics and (some) Anglicans (and the Orthodox Christians), confess the Real Presence, that Jesus is physically (not merely symbolically or spiritually) present. So our piety concerning the Lord's Supper is traditionally quite different than that of a Baptist or Presbyterian or Non-Denominational pastor or layman. For instance, most Lutherans kneel to receive the Sacrament, and our church architecture typically encourages this by virtue of a communion rail with kneelers. Again, this would not make sense in a Baptist context. (I'm not picking on Baptists here, it's just that they are the largest confession of Christians in our context in North America who confess the symbolic nature of their communion elements). So, is it also incongruent for Lutherans to genuflect during the consecration? Interestingly, during the Reformation, the Reformed accused the Lutherans of “bread worship” because of our confession of the Physical Presence. They considered such things as bowing or genuflecting during the consecration to be idolatry. Calvinistic rulers ordered the Lutherans to stop doing it. Obviously, we Lutherans disagree with them on this. And in fact, many editions of the Book of Concord include quotes from the early church fathers - largely to respond to the accusations of the Reformed - in a section called the Catalog of Testimonies. One such quote comes from St. Augustine, and it involves acts of worship toward Christ in the Sacrament: Of the Words of the Lord, Discourse 58 (t. 10, p. 217): “If Christ is not God by nature, but a creature, He is neither to be worshiped nor adored as God. But to these things they will reply and say: Why, then, is it that you adore with His divinity His flesh, which you do not deny to be a creature, and are no less devoted to it than to Deity?” The same, on Ps. 99:5 (t. 8, p. 1103): “‘Worship His footstool.' His footstool is the earth, and Christ took upon Him earth of earth, because flesh is of earth; and He received flesh of the flesh of Mary. And because He walked here in this very flesh, he also gave this very flesh to be eaten by us for salvation. But no one eats that flesh unless He has first worshiped it. Therefore the way has been found how such footstool of the Lord may be worshiped, so that we not only do not sin by worshiping, but sin by not worshiping.” The celebrant, deacon, and acolyte customarily have genuflected together in my parish's celebration. I had a devout parishioner who moved away who would also genuflect in the pew. This is not just a ceremony that only the pastor may participate in. We Lutherans also confess the freedom in the Gospel regarding ceremonies. For example, it is customary to make the sign of the cross at certain points in our personal prayer life (as we are instructed in the Small Catechism), and in our liturgical worship. Again, this ceremony teaches us about Christ - it is a confession of His divinity as the Son in the confession of the Holy Trinity, and it links His crucifixion to Holy Baptism by means of the Trinitarian invocation. Tracing the large sign of the cross from our heads, hearts, and shoulders began as a confession against the Arians, who did not confess the Lord's divinity. This way of making the sign of the cross was a modification of the earlier practice of crossing oneself on the forehead as a reminder of Holy Baptism. But no member of the parish should pressure anyone to either make the sign of the cross or not. That is a matter of personal piety. The pastor is also a member of the congregation with Christian freedom. He may choose to cross Himself at certain points in the service, or he may choose not to. No other member of the parish has the right to pressure, bully, or force him to do so, or to stop doing so, any more than anyone has the right to compel a layman to either do so or not. Genuflecting is a similar act of personal piety (as are things like bowing for the Gloria Patri, nodding the head at the name of Jesus, or folding one's hands to pray). So a parishioner has no more right to demand that a pastor cease to genuflect at the altar than he has to demand that the pastor cross himself at the beginning of the sermon. Luther was actually appalled to learn that some parishioners did not genuflect in the pew during the chanting of the Nicene Creed (there is an ancient custom to genuflect at the words “and was made man”). He said: And when the congregation came to the words, “from the Virgin Mary and was made man,” every one genuflected and removed his hat. It would still be proper and appropriate to kneel at the words “and was made man,” to sing them with long notes as formerly, to listen with happy hearts to the message the Divine Majesty abased Himself and became like us poor bags of worms, and to thank God for the ineffable mercy and compassion reflected in the incarnation of the Deity. But who can ever do justice to that theme?...The following tale is told about a course and brutal lout. While the words, “And was made man” were being sung in church, he remained standing, neither genuflecting nor removing his hat. He showed no reverence, but just stood there like a clod. All the others dropped to their knees when the Nicene Creed was prayed and chanted devoutly. Then the devil stepped up to him and hit him so hard it made his head spin. He cursed him gruesomely and said: “May hell consume you, you boorish ass! If God had become an angel like me and the congregation sang: ‘God was made an angel,' I would bend not only my knees but my whole body to the ground! Yes, I would crawl ten ells down into the ground. And you vile human creature, you stand there like a stick or a stone. You hear that God did not become an angel but a man like you, and you just stand there like a stick of wood!” Whether this story is true or not, it is nevertheless in accordance with the faith (Rom. 12:6). With this illustrative story the holy fathers wished to admonish the youth to revere the indescribably great miracle of the incarnation; they wanted us to open our eyes wide and ponder these words as well. ~ Luther's Works, Vol. 22, pp.102-103, 105-106 Everything that we do during worship is a ceremony - even refraining from certain ceremonies. As the late Atheist philosopher Neal Peart put it in a lyrical poem entitled Free Will (some of our readers may even know this entire work from memory): “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” And before you tap out that hate-letter to Father Eckardt and contact my District President for a heresy trial, I'm not endorsing everything in the song. I'm only using it as an analogy that refraining from a given ceremony is also a ceremony. So we should be deliberate of what confession we are making by either partaking of a ceremonial act, or opting not to. But again, we do so in the realm of Christian liberty. And yes, we should teach, while being mindful that conducting ceremonies - like genuflecting at the altar - is part of that pastoral pedagogy that we are called to do. We should humbly be willing to be taught - especially by the man who has been sent by the Holy Spirit to teach us. And teaching is done in the liturgy as well as in the classroom. What we do in the presence of the altar, font, and pulpit is a powerful confession and explication of what we say that we believe. And if anyone believes genuflecting to be wrong, sinful, or incongruent with our confession, he should be prepared to quote the Bible and the Confessions to make a case for why our ceremonies should resemble those who confess the Real Absence in the Lord's Supper, as well as for making a case that earlier centuries of Lutheran practice has also been wrong.

In today's News: Fire rages near Concordia University — Irvine  The Silverado Fire in Southern California is burning near Concordia University — Irvine, which houses the headquarters of the Pacific Southwest District of the Lutheran Church — Missouri Synod. However, District President the Rev. Dr. Michael Gibson says so far, the campus is safe. Although the fire is some distance away, heavy smoke blankets the area. There are about 600 students still in residence. Gibson asks Lutherans to continue praying, especially for the winds to calm, which are fanning the flames. So far, no structures have been lost, but two firefighters were critically burned.  Interference in Christian worship worsens in China  Pastors in China report that they've been forced to integrate President Xi Jinping’s words into the Biblical account of Jesus feeding the five thousand as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) increasingly pressures church leaders to infuse their sermons with political ideology. According to the Italian-based magazine Bitter Winter, the CCP has continued to use the novel coronavirus pandemic to further control and politicize religions. In September, the two Chinese Christian Councils of Quanzhou, a prefecture-level city in Fujian's southeastern province, demanded all three-self churches integrate Xi’s ideas on curbing food waste into their sermons, so that “the policy reaches everyone in society.” To implement the order, some pastors integrated the leader's words into the Biblical story about Jesus feeding five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. In the spring, officials also ordered the pastor of a church in Zhengzhou, a county-level city in the eastern province of Zhejiang, to preach to the congregation that Americans brought covid-19 to China.  An abortion case goes before the Supreme Court  The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to consider a major abortion case out of Mississippi on Friday, just days after the Senate confirmed pro-life Justice Amy Coney Barrett. The case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, challenges a state law that prohibits abortions on unborn babies after 15 weeks of pregnancy. A federal judge struck down the Mississippi law in 2018, and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling in 2019; but the state appealed to the Supreme Court. On Friday, the justices’ schedule includes time to debate whether they will hear the state’s appeal, CNN reports. The case is significant, not only because of Barrett, but also because “it is widely considered to be a direct challenge to the precedent outlined in the supreme Court’s landmark 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade.”

00:00 - Introduction 02:21 - Scripture Narrative (1 Timothy 3:1-7) 15:33 - Free-for-All (Best decade for a Sport) 29:44 - Main Topic (The Season of Lent) On episode FORTY-EIGHT of Let the Bird Fly! all four of the guys are back in the studio and joined by Professor Earle Treptow from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, WI. Rev. Treptow was gracious enough to join us to talk about being a district president (or Bishop, depending on the nomenclature of your church body). Before joining the seminary faculty, Rev. Treptow served as the president of the Nebraska District of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Before getting to the main topic, however, Wade walks us through what Paul has to say in 1 Timothy 3 about being an overseer in the church and the guys discuss the best decades for some of their favorite sports (or sporting events, I suppose, if you’re willing to allow Peter his first choice...which Ben is not). But as always seems to eventually happen, they finally make it to the main topic, where Prof. Treptow provides some wonderful insight into a role in the church that might often go overlooked. We are extremely grateful to Prof. Treptow for joining us on this episode. We hope to coax him back in the future to discuss some of the areas he teaches at the seminary. And as always, if you are enjoying the show, please subscribe, rate, and review us on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, or TuneIn Radio. You can also like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. On this edition of Radical Grace we talk about the interview with Pastor Seth Florentino who, along with his District President and Synodical President, could face time in a Philippino prison for defying an order by a Methodist Judge to give Holy Communion to a rival group of Lutherans. Does all of that sound crazy? Well, it is a bit crazy, and you can hear more about it by listening to the interview. Before the show began Mort and absentee host Troy Curtis got into a discussion about Revelation chapter 20. The way he reads it, when people are thrown into the lake of fire they are instantly snuffed out and there is no eternal punishment. As the host of the show who is always on the lookout for the “live issues” of Christianity, I couldn’t resist making this the topic of the show. Does brother Mort believe in Annihilationism ? And can we set him straight? Can he be transformed by the renewing of his mind? If you haven’t listened an episode of Radical Grace yet, now is the time to start.
