Today's Guest: Michael J. Maher Michael is CEO of REFERCO, the world's foremost authority in business referrals. In just his third year in real estate, he did 187 transactions and over $40 million, entirely from referrals. For the next 8 years, he received over 500 referrals every single year and netted over $1 million. Michael is an internationally bestselling author and his book (7L) The Seven Levels of Communication: Go from Relationships to Referrals has been the #1 book in Real Estate Sales on Amazon for over 9 straight years. In addition to these impressive accomplishments, he has shared the stage with George W. Bush, Tony Robbins, Barbara Corcoran, and John Maxwell. Highlights From The Show: As we often do on the show, we started by talking about Michael's background. He began his working career as a high school math teacher and coach of three sports: football, basketball, and baseball. He spoke about how dedicated he was and earned District Teacher of the Year in his first year teaching. Michael had an interest in real estate so he got licensed as an agent at the same time he bought his first home. He talks about how he built his business almost entirely through word of mouth and referrals. Because Michael became an agent in 1999, I asked him how he weathered the housing market crash years. He said that because they were getting almost all their business through referrals, they ended up having record years during that period. This is when Michael first knew he was going to have to write a book because he had discovered a system of doing business that worked well in good markets, but even better in depressed times. He spoke about how the 7L system is basically tailor-made for a challenging time like we are facing during the COVID-19 pandemic. We talked about specific marketing and deal-generating strategies based on his 7L principles, going into detail about making your marketing as personal as possible. I then asked Michael about his book, (7L) The Seven Levels of Communication: Go from Relationships to Referrals. He walked us through the levels and their amount of influence in relationships with people. The second-most powerful level involves events and seminars, and Michael explained some of the programs that they offer. That led to a conversation on the necessity of some structure to your day to increase productivity. He used the example of going to school and having an intense focus on a particular subject for a predetermined amount of time every day. Michael also walked us through the morning and evening rituals, which he imparts in his book and classes through acronyms. Michael then told us about how he helps business owners build their businesses on a foundation of love, generosity, and appreciation. He went into great detail about the personal and professional benefits of choosing to live and conduct yourself this way. Michael described love as our superpower, and generosity is that love in action. He also explained that it is vital for us to appreciate everything that happens in our lives, good or bad. I can't tell you how powerful and wisdom-packed this episode is! You would be crazy not to join me as I interview super-successful entrepreneur, Michael J. Maher! In today's second hour, Dom welcomes attorney Francis Malofiy and client and former Allentown School District teacher Jason Moorehead back onto the Dom Giordano Program. Moorehead's story is one that Giordano has been following for a while after the teacher was terminated from his job after it was uncovered that he attended the January 6th rally in Washington D.C. Moorehead has maintained that he did indeed attend the speaking portion of the day's events, but did not go inside the Capitol where riots broke out. In today's update, Malofiy reveals why he and Moorehead have chosen to file suit against the school district for an assassination of his professional life, telling that the district doubled down without clearing his name. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
In this episode, I chat with Dan Wolfe, an educational leader who has served in Pasco County, Florida for more than 20 years. During this time, he has held roles as a teacher, instructional coach and administrator. He is currently an Assistant Principal at Sunray Elementary. Dan was selected as Pasco County's District Teacher of the Year in the 2011-2012 school year and he is a part of the district's Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Committee that recently established Pre-K through Grade 12 SEL standards. For the past two years Dan has written a blog called Becoming The Change which focuses on a different quote each day and how we can best apply it towards becoming the change through our own moral compass and the five areas in SEL. He has recently channeled this passion for writing into a new book, “Becoming the Change - Five Essential Elements to Being Your Best Self.” During his spare time Dan enjoys spending his time reading, listening to podcasts, and going to Disney with his wife and daughter. During our conversation, we discuss the importance of SEL in education - something that was embraced during the pandemic but has seemingly fallen to the wayside as we once again become solely focused on academic outcomes. Dan stresses that these two aspects are not and should not be viewed as separate or even conflicting entities but rather as the interdependent components of our students' success. We explore the idea that our systems avoid SEL because it is not easily quantifiable and when we are able to do so then the programs we design do not offer the flexibility to address the nuances. Dan even asks if SEL has the clout to draw advocates so that it is truly deemed important. Regardless, we encourage our listeners to continue building community around these practices so that we will see eventual shifts in our field. Ready to hear more? Today, on EPISODE #216, we will be speaking with Dan Wolfe, an Assistant Principal from Pasco County, Florida, on his new book Becoming the Change[i]: Five Essential Elements That Guide Us Towards Becoming Our Best Selves-- that is coming out before Memorial Day Weekend. Dan reached out to me via Twitter to let me know he was about to release a new book that was inspired by a blog he started on Social and Emotional Learning called “Our Moral Compass” that led to him starting the Become the Change Podcast[ii] where Dan focuses on the five areas of social and emotional learning that we have been focused on with this podcast. I'm always looking for unique ways to share these important SEL skills, and I loved what Dan has created with his book that compares SEL skills to a moral compass that can used to keep us on track with our life. Before the title of the book changed, it was going to called Our Moral Compass, and evolved to Becoming the Change. What caught my attention with Dan, BEFORE I had even read this book, was the original title. I wondered how he was going to use the SEL competencies to help us navigate through difficult times in our life. We all need a moral compass, and without this, we can veer off track very quickly. How do you navigate through life when times are difficult? Do you have your own built in compass that keeps you on track? I look forward to speaking with Dan, learning how he is using the analogy of a moral compass to help his students learn, navigate their way through the complexities of life, by understanding and apply SEL in our schools today. Let's meet Dan Wolfe! Welcome Dan Wolfe, thank you for reaching out to me and sharing your new book, Becoming the Change. INTRO Q: Dan, what caught my attention with what you have created is not just the fact I can see that you have been immersed in teaching SEL for many years, which is clear from your blog and podcast, that I know is a lot of work on top of being an Assistant Principal and all that goes along with this full-time position. When I first saw your compass analogy, with the SEL competencies that we have been covering on this podcast since we launched, (we did add mindset to ours) but you've got the 5 Casel[iii] Competencies covered, it made me think of this powerful leadership activity I did many years ago involving a compass. I was dropped off in the middle of the woods with a cooler of food, (that I remember being very heavy) and a tent, (that was awkward to carry) and we had to navigate to our camp site using a compass. There had to have been at least 5 of us. This was years before I think Casel even came up with their 5 competencies, (or at least they weren't online) but they were all apparent on this trek from where we were dropped off in the woods, to where we needed to go (our campsite) where we met up with all of the other groups in one place. This activity was of course to bring to light how we “showed up” in life under a stressful, grueling, difficult task. I've thought of this activity many times over the years, as an example of all that's needed to guide us through life…but the one area that really helped, especially when at a crossroads, was navigating life, with a moral compass that came from within, choosing what I think was best for me at the time. How did you come up with this idea of the moral compass connected to these important SEL skills? Self-awareness came up as we all got to see ourselves and unique characteristics on this journey. Relationship skills seemed to be the most important as we had to come to a consensus with every decision we made. Obviously they had to be responsible decisions to allow us to get to where we were going (hopefully before dark) so we could set up our tent in the daylight. Social awareness was apparent as we had to think outside of ourselves and help others, and we of course had to manage ourselves, and make sure our emotions were regulated in this difficult task. Q1: Like my example of using a compass, we had to make sure we stayed on track as we moved from where we were, to our final destination. When we went off track, we lost (or wasted) time that was important for setting up our campsite that evening. What happens when we go off track with your compass analogy? Pick one of the competencies and explain how we can use your compass to navigate this competency through life. Q2: There's a lot behind this quote that you mention as a Compass Check. “You are the Captain of Your Own Ship. Never let society determine the direction of your moral compass.” (Page 12, Becoming the Change). I think of this for leaders who have to forge their own way, often going where no one has ever gone before them, or even like we spoke on a recent episode with Dr. Marie Gervais, with the former CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi, who was given a lower wage because she a woman, and a woman of color. She didn't even think of asking for more, since it was a “good” wage, but she knew she was being limited. In all the 5 competencies we usually know what to do to stay on track, but something gets in the way, takes us off course, and we don't do it. How can we use this compass check to be responsible for ourselves, and our direction, as we pursue our goals? Q3: Since anyone forging their own way will have come up against all of these statements, I wonder if you could review your Becoming the Change Self-Assessment Tool to pinpoint which one of the 5 competencies we need to focus on? I took this self-reflection tool, and while all the competencies are a work in progress, what showed up for me was self-awareness scored the highest with your score of “I'm Headed in the Right Direction.” I know that I'm getting to know myself on a deeper level with each episode, and that my learning documented on this podcast, especially areas of growth that's apparent if we answer your questions honestly. I think there's always room for improvement and to learn more so I didn't check “I've reached my destination” EXCEPT for the same area you did on Relationship Skills and helping others grow, since this is what I'm doing with the podcast. What did you learn about yourself with this Self-Assessment? What do you see others learn with it? How can this tool be used like a compass to check our growth over time? Q4: I couldn't help noticing the choices on your self-assessment (I'm not sure which direction to go in or where to begin) or I'm at a crossroads, because I've been there many times. There was the time I was urged to move in the direction of neuroscience, and it was a new field for me, and I was questioning whether this was the right direction for me. What advice would you offer someone who has checked “I don't know where to begin” or even when you've been working for some time and you hit a cross-road and are “somewhat stuck.” How would you help someone move past these 2 scenarios? Q5: Chapter 2, Regulating Yourself Through Self-Management, you have a compass check about our true superpower. I heard podcaster Jay Shetty talking about superpowers and think we all have them, as we evolve, we get to know what they are. You put a quote in this chapter from Dale Carnegie about our True Superpower that I think is very important for us to all master. “Everybody in the world is seeking happiness—and there is one sure way to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't depend on outward conditions. It depends on inner conditions.”― Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People In a world that seems to push our buttons daily (gas prices are skyrocketing, stress in the workplace is at an all-time high) how can we ALL master this superpower and stay in control of our happiness when the outside world is trying it's best to sabotage our happiness? Q6: In Chapter 3, Social Awareness, you have a quote by Brian Tracy. “Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others.”-Brian Tracy This is a big one for me, and what's crazy is that if you are not aware of your surroundings, this opportunity to lend a hand to another person can be missed. Your story about Sept 11th took me back to that time and I had only been living in the US a few months. The job I had come to do with youth had fell through, and I was at a crossroads, working out where I was going next, and to pay the bills, I found a job as a nanny at a local resort, and cleaned houses. Money was really tight. I remember standing in line at a grocery store and the guy in front of me was buying diapers (gosh after having kids, diapers were one of those necessities that you had to have, but boy where they expensive). I was NOT socially aware back then, and was thinking of myself, and in a split second I watched him not have enough money to pay for the diapers, and the check out clerk took them, and he ran out of the store. I missed an opportunity to help this guy, and I even tried to find him when I went outside of the store, but this has bothered me since that moment, over 20 years ago. Being socially aware is one thing, but being ready to act on it, when someone is in need is another. What have you noticed with social awareness and how to be prepared at all times to help others? Q7: Chapter 4 on Enhancing Your Relationship Skills, you quote that No One is Perfect “When you stop expecting people to be perfect, you can like them for who they are.” -Donald Miller This reminded me of my last interview with Dr. Marie Gervais, and her book The Spirit of Work when I noticed that when we look at each person's spirit, that's for fuller expansion, we can only see greatness in this person, not their imperfections. How have you used this idea to enhance your relationships and look at everyone in this way? Q8: Chapter 5 Responsible Decision-Making you quote Gary Vaynerchuk who says “Your legacy is being written by yourself. Make the right decisions.” I love Gary V, and liked this quote because we all do have an incredible opportunity to leave an important legacy in our lifetime, that can impact others, for years after we are gone and create what you say as “an everlasting legacy.” What advice would you have here about being mindful of our decisions today, so that we can strengthen the legacy we are working our entire lifetime on? Q9: Is there something important that I have missed? Dan, I want to thank you very much for sharing your new book with us. I absolutely love the moral compass analogy, and know this will help many others navigate through these 5 SEL competencies with a clear path. For people who want to access your book, what is the best way? Is your website the best place for people to find you? I have wanted Kevin Matsunaga on my podcast for a long, long time. Kevin never imagined he would follow in his father's footsteps and become a teacher. He found his calling as the digital media teacher, coach and guide at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School on the island of Kauaʻi, and his students have won too many national video competitions to count. In 2007, the Hawai'i Department of Education recognized Kevin with a Kauaʻi District Teacher of the Year award. The impact he has had on kids in our public schools since 2007 is simply staggering. This episode was edited by the talented Evan Kurohara. Our theme music comes from the vast catalogue of pianist, Michael Sloan. In the book, "Good to Great," Jim Collins highlights the hedgehog concept based on the Greek parable that the fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one thing really well. For Perquimans County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tanya Turner, her hedgehog concept is and always has been the importance of literacy in every classroom and in every grade level. In the newest episode of the EdLeader podcast, Dr. Turner sits down with her former teammate Dr. Rob Jackson to discuss the importance of literacy and the school system's plans to increase the reading proficiency of every student in the school system.Dr. Turner is recognized as an effective and highly regarded instructional leader in the Northeastern Region of North Carolina and across the state. She began her career in education as a fifth-grade teacher prior to serving as an instructional facilitator. After her successful tenure as a Middle School Principal, she was tapped as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction with Edenton-Chowan Schools. Dr. Turner's EVAAS presentations have been recognized at the state level and published on the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction's regional website as well as the NC STAR website. Nicole Bryson is an expert in ELA/Writing and a District Teacher of the Year winner. Last year alone, she received over 50 hours of professional development in writing. In the 21st Century, students need much more than content knowledge. There are specific skills required to be successful that can and should be taught through content. Skills that include: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, information literacy, media literacy, technology literacy, flexibility, leadership, initiative, productivity, and social skills. Wouldn't we all agree that all careers require these skills in the form of writing? Would we then agree that we should teach our students these skills in their writing? In today's episode, Nicole and I discuss why students should write regularly and how to implement writing in our virtual classrooms. Writing is not limited to ELA classes and a writing workshop. Research has proven repeatedly (see references below) that writing leads to academic gains when used cross-curricular. In this episode, I am thrilled to interview Michael J. Maher, who is CEO of REFERCO, the world's foremost authority in business referrals. In addition to these impressive accomplishments, he has shared the stage George W. Bush, Tony Robbins, Barbara Corcoran, and John Maxwell. As we often do on the show, we started by talking about Michael's background. He said that because they were getting almost all their business through referrals, they ended up having records years during that period. That led us to a conversation on the necessity of some structure to your day in order to increase productivity. He used the example of going to school and having an intense focus on a particular subject for a pre-determined amount of time every day. Michael also walked us through the morning and evening rituals, which he imparts in his book and classes through the use of acronyms. Michael then told us about how he helps business owners build their businesses on a foundation of love, generosity, and appreciation. He went into great detail about the personal and professional benefits of choosing to live and conduct yourself this way. Michael described love as our super-power, and generosity is that love in action. He also explained that it is vital for us to appreciate everything that happens in our lives, good or bad. I can't tell you how powerful and wisdom-packed this episode is! You would be crazy not to join me as I interview super-successful entrepreneur, Michael J. Maher! A long discussion about some of the skills required to be a successful middle school music educator including topics such as discipline and motivational tools. Charlie’s current gig at Double Peak and the interesting way that his students are introduced to instrumental music. To offer saxophone or not in beginning band day one? This is Charlie’s retirement year and we talk about his feelings as he approaches the end of his time as a full time music teacher. Links: Double Peak Music Del Borgo: Shaker Variants Balmages: Industrial Loops Basic Training for Concert Band Piazzola, arr. Longfield: Street Tango Biography: Charlie McGhee is in his 30th year as a Middle School music teacher. He began his career in Escondido Union School District and for the last 25 years he has been teaching in the San Marcos Unified School District. During his tenure as a music teacher, Charlie has had the privilege of starting music programs in 5 different North County schools; Rincon Middle, L.R. Green, Woodland Park Middle, San Elijo Middle and Double Peak K-8 School. Charlie’s current assignment is Double Peak K-8 School where he was able to design an intensive music program for all the students Kinder thru 8th grade, which involves music classes twice a week for the younger grades. Then, in the upper grades everyone gets class instruction on recorders, violin, Clarinet, and finally on trumpet before starting their career in Beginning Band. Although Charlie teaches Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Band, his passion has always been for Jazz band, which he also started at each of his school assignments. In fact, ten years ago, while he was at San Elijo Middle School, he started his own Jazz Festival where, after the students perform and are graded with comments by professionals, the judges and the teachers get up on stage and perform for the students! There is nothing more exciting than for these students to see their director’s play jazz. Charlie’s philosophy of Music Education stems from the conviction that students need to feel connected to school. Music Education addresses the needs of many students who have not found a connection in their other classes. Therefore, the cornerstone of his philosophy is to first, involve the students in music, then, support and encourage them through “the difficult things like, the rigor of playing an instrument”, and finally instill in them a passion for a lifetime. Charlie’s Bands consistently score superior ratings at festivals as he holds the highest expectations for his students. During his career, Charlie has been awarded “Teacher of the Year” at four different schools and once was the District Teacher of the Year” for San Marcos Unified. Over the years, he has been sought after as an Honor Band Director and he has presented several Jazz clinics for both CMEA and SCSBOA conferences. Most recently, Charlie was awarded the “Educator of the year” award by the San Diego Youth Symphony at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. Charlie incorporates a Parent Band Booster organization to assist him in making the musical experience more exciting and special for the students. Charlie’s students regularly attend festivals and clinics at Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. He always has his eye out for new places for his students to perform! Performances always make the experience of playing music fresh and exciting! Charlie has played professionally his entire life on drums and percussion. Among the many bands that Charlie regularly plays with is the Ira Liss Big Band Jazz Machine from San Diego. He has recorded 5 CDs with this organization. Charlie is from San Diego and lives with his wife Jane in Encinitas. When Charlie is not at school or playing music you can find him jogging on the beach or with a fishing pole in his hand.

Well, you are in for a treat as we speak with Sarah Emerling, a Special Education teacher from South Carolina where we talk about Freckle. She tells us how Freckle wants to reach all of your students at the level that’s best for them! Freckle empowers teachers to differentiate instruction across Math, ELA, Social Studies and Science. Freckle Sarah Emerling received her Bachelors in Elementary and Special Education, National Board Certified as Exceptional Needs Specialist. She also was the District Teacher of the Year Finalist two times. Sarah tells us, “My name is Sarah Emerling, and I co-teach in fourth and fifth grade. I'm married to Chris Emerling, a high school English teacher (who also really loves technology). We have two awesome kids, who both come to school with me every day. I graduated from SUNY Geneseo with dual certification in both elementary education and special education. This is my eighteenth year of teaching, and I absolutely love this job. True co-taught inclusion classes are where my heart lives. Students in co-taught classes get the benefit of having two teachers for that class period. My role is to serve and support all students in those classes, as well as supporting teachers as they strive to meet our students' unique needs. I am an enormous advocate of educational technology and teaching students to create their own learning. I am thrilled to be a part of the Full Circle Technology program, allowing students that I work with to have laptops at their disposal daily. As we explore the 1:1 technology environment, our students are learning essential 21st century skills that will help them throughout their lives. Freckle has been a game-changer in my classroom. We first started using the free edition several years ago and fell in love. It is an adaptive math program that meets students at their level. They can work to catch up on skills they haven't mastered, while at the same time progressing through skills that are above grade level in other domains. The students are highly engaged in the program and the data it generates is phenomenal. There are many different ways to track data, incentivize learning, and engage students. It's a flexible and fantastic program.” Contact: Sarah Emerling Twitter: @iLessonLady Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/butler5/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/iLessonLady Email: semerling@acpsd.net #DataNinja Items mentioned in Episode 27: Freckle Sarah Emerling’s Teachers Pay Teachers page Kids Deserve It Sparks In The Dark We would love to hear from you!
