Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"How can humans stay human when we're far away from our home planet? "How does it affect us when there are no familiar animals nearby?"As the countdown begins, we take off, heading for the moon base. Once there, daily tasks turn routine and we begin to miss the sounds of Earth. But, the engineers of Bremen have hidden a control panel in the habitat with unexpected outcomes.""Bremen to Moon" is inspired by the city of Bremen's traditions and innovations. It begins with a field recording of the Bremer Loch, an underground charitable donation box. Each donation activates a sound from "The Town Musicians of Bremen" fairy tale."Bremen is also home to Airbus, which helped build the European Service Module (ESM) for NASA's Artemis program. The ESM provides power, oxygen, nitrogen, and water to the astronauts. These life systems are critical to space travel and the ultimate goal of building a permanent moon base."Bremen's animal hole reimagined by Alexandra Pierschalla.

In this episode, Jure Leskovec, co-founder and chief scientist at Kumo and professor of computer science at Stanford, joins us to explore two fronts of his work: AI for science and relational deep learning. We begin with AI Virtual Cell, a multiscale effort to learn data-driven representations from proteins to cells to patients using single-cell RNA-seq data, protein language models like ESM, and structure models like AlphaFold—without hand-encoding biology. Jure then dives into relational deep learning, reframing enterprise databases as graphs and training neural networks directly on raw multi-table data. He explains Kumo's Relational Foundation Model (RFM2), which performs in-context learning over subgraphs to make accurate predictions on new databases and tasks with no training, and how this approach benchmarks against RelBench and other multi-table datasets. We also discuss real-world deployments at companies like Reddit, DoorDash, and Coinbase, explainability via attention over tables and columns, integration with agentic systems, deployment options, and practical limitations. Promoting Playful Activities in Sports: "They have to be more playful elements and basically activities that have other logics than winning and competing and comparing."— Dr Johan Högman --- Timestamps:  "Exploring Views on Getting Children Involved in Sports"  "Challenging initiatives fail to attract inactive children"  "Revamping Children's Sports: Beyond Winning and Competing"  "Alternative Physical Activities vs Traditional Sports Programs"  "Alternative physical activity for inactive children tested" Johan Högman is interested in the social and cultural dimensions of how and why children move their bodies. He believes that physical activity is important for all children, regardless of the type of activity, and that understanding the societal views of physical activity is vital in ensuring that more children are able to participate. Johan's research involves digging deeper into the conditions that impact physical activity in children and the factors behind why some children may not be as active as others. Overall, he is passionate about promoting physical activity and helping more children to move their bodies in healthy ways. ---- "On this episode of Physical Activity Researcher Podcast, we discuss the challenges of engaging physically inactive children in sports activities. Our speaker explains that while some children love sports and physical activity, those who are not as active perceive it as sporty and competitive, making them less likely to participate. To address this issue, our researcher recommends changing the ordinary business of sports clubs and offering more diverse activities that appeal to non-athletic children. The episode covers the use of the bioecological theory to understand the factors that prevent children from enjoying physical activity. The theory helps to examine individual traits and abilities and how they interact with the cultural and environmental factors. The podcast also shares insights on the best practices for conducting focus groups to collect children's experience and perceptions regarding physical activity. Finally, our speaker talks about the ongoing efforts to come up with alternative physical activities that are enjoyable and accessible to inactive children by conducting a 12-week program with playful activities like Pokemon Go and trampoline parks to measure the effectiveness compared to traditional sports activities." ---- This podcast episode is sponsored by Fibion Inc. | Better Sleep, Sedentary Behaviour and Physical Activity Research with Less Hassle --- Collect, store and manage SB and PA data easily and remotely - Discover ground-breaking Fibion SENS --- SB and PA measurements, analysis, and feedback made easy.  Learn more about Fibion Research --- Learn more about Fibion Sleep and Fibion Circadian Rhythm Solutions. --- Fibion Kids - Activity tracking designed for children. --- Collect self-report physical activity data easily and cost-effectively with Mimove. --- Explore our Wearables,  Experience sampling method (ESM), Sleep,  Heart rate variability (HRV), Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity article collections for insights on related articles. --- Refer to our article "Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Measurements" for an exploration of active and sedentary lifestyle assessment methods. --- Learn about actigraphy in our guide: Exploring Actigraphy in Scientific Research: A Comprehensive Guide. --- Gain foundational ESM insights with "Introduction to Experience Sampling Method (ESM)" for a comprehensive overview. --- Explore accelerometer use in health research with our article "Measuring Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior with Accelerometers ". --- For an introduction to the fundamental aspects of HRV, consider revisiting our Ultimate Guide to Heart Rate Variability. --- Follow the podcast on Twitter https://twitter.com/PA_Researcher Follow host Dr Olli Tikkanen on Twitter https://twitter.com/ollitikkanen Follow Fibion on Twitter https://twitter.com/fibion https://www.youtube.com/@PA_Researcher

Esmée and Jocelyn explore patriarchal concepts of love in order to highlight the need for a radical feminist love that uproots and heals. Finally, take a deep dive into the concept of feminist love with Jocelyn's commentary she leaves us with after the interview. Stay tuned 'til the very end for Margaret's explanation of this month's cover art reprinted below. From WLRN's resident graphic designer, Margaret: "I started with the idea of light representing love. Light flowing out of our selves - connecting us. I found a photo of our sun I had captured which showed rays radiating out. I reused some silhouettes I had created for earlier editions, and arranged them to show women in a circle around the source of light, and love, holding hands. For the background I added a NASA image of stars that I altered with colors. Stars across the universe, like our sun, some with the potential for light and love. But it is our earth, and each other which constellates our reality. It is our sun which is the source of light that allows us to live, and to love. It is our selves which bring light and love to each other. Blessed be!"

Cotard's delusion, also known as Cotard's syndrome, is an extremely rare condition where the patient believes that they are actually dead. For the bestselling author Esmé Weijun Wang, Cotard's came along after she had already been traveling a difficult road that involved schizoaffective disorder along with a host of other mental health issues. While experiencing Cotard's, Esmé urgently told her husband that he was dead too and so was their dog. She believed, was certain, that the life she was experiencing was kind of a simulation where she had to prove herself worthy of a second chance and not an eternity in Hell. We also hear about the shocking way Yale handled Esmé's mental health and about the trauma very early in childhood that she thinks led to the complex PTSD that fueled a lot of her mental health challenges.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about.
