Honoring Charles Handy: Wisdom on Innovation, Leadership, and Life In this episode, we pay tribute to the late Charles Handy, an influential philosopher, storyteller, and thought leader. The host re-releases a special episode recorded at Handy's London home following his stroke. Despite his condition, Handy remained impressively positive, attributing his enhanced creativity to his impairment. He shares profound insights on various concepts like the 'white stone,' 'citizenship within organizations,' and his famous 'shamrock organization.' Handy emphasizes the importance of making changes before they become critical and inspires with his reflections on challenging orthodoxy, dreaming big, and understanding leadership versus management. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom on how to navigate and innovate in both personal and organizational spheres. 00:00 Remembering Charles Handy 01:33 Introduction to the Second Curve 02:37 The Concept of the Second Curve 04:32 Davy's Bar and the Importance of Change 09:50 Personal Stories and Life Lessons 18:54 The Three Selves and Identity 36:03 Leadership vs. Management 39:56 The Shamrock Organization 42:13 Citizenship in Organizations 45:36 Efficiency vs. Effectiveness 48:31 The Donut Theory 54:52 Final Thoughts and Legacy

My guest is the fabulous second curver Sarah Armstrong, a trailblazing businesswoman and author of the book "The Mom's Guide to a Good Divorce: What to Think Through When There Are Children Involved". Like many couples, Sarah and her husband faced challenges that led to her considering divorce. They both knew it was not an easy decision, but they were determined to make the best out of the situation, especially for Grace. Sarah witnessed ugly divorces among friends and knew she needed to approach her own situation differently. As a result, she focused on making Grace the priority throughout the process. We discussed her book, "The Mom's Guide to a Good Divorce: What to Think Through When There Are Children Involved," and how it became a powerful tool for many people going through similar situations. The book provides practical guidance and emotional support for parents and Sarah stressed the importance of compartmentalizing emotions during this challenging time. She recounts how her daughter Grace's innocent and wise remark about a "good divorce" became the catalyst for writing the book. Sarah is on a mission to change society's perception of divorce and to promote the concept of a divorce should not define one's life negatively and that everyone deserves happiness and fulfillment, regardless of marital status and with the right support can find a way to move forward. Ian and the host, Aidan McCullen, explore how companies past and present have navigated the transition from the 'first curve' - a state of established practices and security - to the 'second curve' of innovation and adaptation in the face of new technologies and markets. They discuss examples of organisations like HR Block, SGI (Silicon Graphics), and Volvo, and how they've managed to pivot or struggled with these shifts. Ian offers profound insights into the societal move towards a knowledge economy, the importance of venture capital in disruptive innovation, consumer empowerment, and the geographical shift in economic power towards the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, they discuss the importance of organisational culture in adapting to change, the challenges of measuring success on the second curve, and the personal and societal impacts of these transitions. The conversation concludes by emphasising the need for individuals and organisations to embrace uncertainty, leverage existing competencies, and prepare for a future that prioritises hyper-effectiveness and adaptive skills. 00:00 Introduction to the Second Curve 00:31 Understanding the Shift from First to Second Curve 00:56 The Impact of the Second Curve on Organizations 01:44 The Second Curve and the Post-Industrial Economy 02:10 The Role of Knowledge in the Second Curve 02:48 The Power of Disruptive Innovation 03:03 The Shift in Consumer Power 03:34 The Geographic Transformation of the Second Curve 04:36 The Importance of People in the Second Curve 05:31 The Second Curve Mindset 06:25 The Dilemma of the Second Curve 09:02 The Role of Technology in the Second Curve 15:06 The Impact of the Second Curve on Individuals 18:24 The Future of the Second Curve 48:19 Conclusion: Embracing the Second Curve Find ian here: http://ianmorrison.com
The Second Curve: Bracing for Changes in Technology, Consumers, and Markets The podcast sees futurist and author, Ian Morrison, discuss the concept of his book, 'The Second Curve'. This concept delineates how businesses must straddle their existing 'first curve' while preparing for a 'second curve' defined by new technologies, market shifts, and emerging consumer behaviors. Morrison cites examples, like Microsoft and Apple, of successful navigation from the first to second curve and emphasizes the importance of not abandoning the profit potential of the existing business too soon. Concerning organisations, Morrison discusses a shift from mechanistic to more fluid 'organic' forms, referencing shifts to more connected, network-driven models and an importance of corporate culture. He also explains the strategy of 'virtual integration' employed by companies like Apple, contrasting it to traditional integration approaches. Morrison finishes by highlighting the enduring relevance of adaptable, entrepreneurial culture in the success of these transformations. Tom's entrepreneurial journey has been nothing short of inspiring. His transformation from a biology student to a thriving entrepreneur who co-founded PENGARNA has been a tale of determination and sheer hard work. Yet, what strikes me most about our conversation is his decision to step back and take a much-needed break from the business. Tom shares his reflections on the evolution of his work life. He talks about the intense effort that went into the launch and growth of PENGARNA, as well as the incredible learning period in the agency's early years. My conversation with Tom serves as a reminder that life isn't a straight line and that sometimes, taking a step back, recognising the special seeds of talent and brilliance within us can lead to leaps forward and getting on to the next second curve. His unique perspective on work, identity and personal growth left me, and hopefully, you with plenty to contemplate. In all our busy lives, we can learn from Tom to press pause occasionally, reassess our direction, and most importantly, not shy away from stepping off the beaten path. Remember, it's the detours that often lead to the most exciting discoveries and the next second curve. I look forward to catching up with Tom in a few months and seeing where his next second curve takes him. You must join us to hear all! We would love to hear from you. We live in a society .... so let's fix it!'The Second Curve' by Charles Handy is a collection of 16 essays reflecting on societal changes & predicting potential innovations of the future. It has a technology/management focus but is also broad and ties in with human wellbeing. There are a smattering of anecdotes & facts that help to reinforce his personal opinions and thoughts.I summarised the book as follows. "A typical problem with books of essays is continuity, but these were all crafted for this work. The topics are scattered but he shows clear & consistent thinking throughout. Really is more for provoking thoughts/discussion rather than solving actual societal problems. Perfect for people who prefer shorter form and I'd personally say was good but not mind shattering."I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. (The Atlantic) Your Professional Decline Is Coming (Much) Sooner Than You Think: Here's How to Make the Most of It. (The Atlantic) Falling Upward by Richard Rohr _____________________________ Wise Quotes On The First & Second Curves "I noticed that analysis and innovation get harder as we get older and and I started looking into why that was. And there's a whole body of research that shows that there's something called fluid intelligence. Fluid intelligence is what makes you good at what you're good at. So you were a Wall Street (HR) guy and and what made you good at your job was that you were able to answer other people's questions and solve other people's problems faster than anybody else. That's what makes you really good in the knowledge business and the ideas business. And that gets easier, and better, through your 20s and and into your 30s. And then in your late 30s, according to the research, that fluid intelligence, the ability to do that actually starts to decline, and is really in free fall in your 40s. That's why certain things for people who are in perfectly good health and have high levels of skill, find their job getting harder and just more challenging than it used to be. That's why lawyers find that in their 40s they're not as sharp as they were in their 30s and surgeons find the same thing - whether they're willing to admit it or not. But here's the good news. Actually the research shows that's not your only intelligence. The first intelligence curve goes up and comes back down - but there's another intelligence curve behind it called the crystallized intelligence curve, which makes it much easier for you not to answer somebody else's questions, but to ask the right questions. You get much better at taking the information that's out there and assembling it into a coherent storyline and solving problems that way now. That's a different task than I'm going to answer your questions and solve your problems faster and better than anybody else. It's: I'm going to go figure out what the right questions are and then I'm go...

"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Welcome to a very special Episode of "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! Please welcome to the "GLT Clearing" one of my very very favorite Actors: Colin Hurley!Ahhh Mr Shakespeare!I had the great priviledge of being on stage with Colin many years ago, at the very beginning of my career as an Actor. An experience I will never forget!Colin was the most astonishing Hamlet and he tought me the true nature of Ensemble: "The spiralling upwards" of excellence that happens when true magic - or Alchemy & Gold as I like to call it - is present in the "Clearing" of the Stage!Marvellous!I was Polonius (and the Gravedigger) to Colin Hurley's astonishing "Hamlet" back in the day, at the Salisbury Playhouse circa 1990!Polonius's conceit of course is to watch Hamlet carefully to ascertain if he is mad or not...I remember standing there listening to him and ACTUALLY thinking: "Fuck me! You're awesome!" And indeed he was and is!A really lovely, rich juicy conversation indeed about the true nature of Acting, along with the highs - the lows - the triumphs - the disappointments - and the resurgences to shine once more! Acting in all of its flavours & textures, warts and all.Colin has had a rich and varied career and is a Shakespearean Specialist, Actor & Teacher in particular. He has appeared at the RSC, The National - particularly The Globe - and has been a regular foil to Mark Rylance. And indeed Colin was Sir Toby Belch in THAT Production of "Twelfth Night" with Mark Rylance and Stephen Fry in London & New York circa 2013.You can also "Watch/Listen" to Colin's time in The GLT "Clearing" here:So - thanks for listening! In a special "Legacy: Life Reflections" Episode of The Good Listening To Podcast, Stuart Cox - Actor, Shakespeare Director & Journeyman reflects on his "journey to now" in a conversation he would call - in summary: "Rubbing Shoulders"Stuart returns to the GLT Clearing to talk, amongst other things, about "accepting" his chronic heart condition. "Legacy: Life Reflections" is a special 'series strand' of the Good Listening To Podcast - inspired by Shakespeare's "All the World's a Stage..." where I go into a bit of extra depth on "Legacy" and "How you would most like to be remembered?" And "What are your life-lessons-learned-along-the-way" that you'd like to share with us?In this Episode Stuart Cox talks profoundly about his current state of being "at peace with NOW" - here in his Clearing - as he describes how he has accepted and completely come to terms with a chronic and worsening heart condition, with the opportunity of the Podcast itself (in being given a "good listening to") as catharsis.A lovely, rich in-depth conversation, anchored around his great love of Cuba. And at its heart - the comic and almost impossible staging of a Production of Pericles! Leading Stuart through his story - as if "Life imitating Art" to one of his most important life-lessons:"Accept what you cannot change..."So thanks for listening to another Episode of a "GLT with me CG!"The Podcast series that features "The Clearing": Where all good Questions come to be asked and all good Stories come to be told! With some lovely juicy storytelling metaphors to also enjoy along the way:The Clearing itself - A Tree (where we get to "shake your tree to see which storytelling apples fall out, in the form of a lovely storytelling exercise called "5-4-3-2-1") - some Alchemy - some Gold - and finally a Cake with a Cherry on Top!Think "Desert Island Discs" but in a Clearing! Ladies n' Genmin welcome to another exciting episode of "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! And absolutely delighted to be bringing to the "The GLT Clearing" today - for our collective joy and delictation - my oldest and dearest friend: Actor, Drama Teacher, Theatre Practitioner, Clown, Musician - and all round "Versatility Pants!" and thoroughly decent human being - Ged Stephenson!Ged is indeed my oldest friend! We met in 1982 and trained together - as Drama Teachers - at the Central School of Screech & Trauma (!) in a Graduating Year Group called Teacher 86! A joyful and unforgettable formative experience together - which set me very firmly on the path towards who I am - and what I do today - with Ged's and my experiences running in parallel. We shared many an anarchic flat and joyful experiences aplenty together - generally 'titting about' as a pair of precursors to "Ant & Dec" before they were even born!He is a brilliant Director, Teacher, Actor, Musician, Clown - and an inspirer of many and to me in particular...He is also very mischievous - so a potential pain in the arse to interview! But today he was quite well behaved!Enjoy! So - thanks for listening to another episode of a "GLT with me CG!"The Podcast series that features "The Clearing": Where all good questions come to be asked and all good stories come to be told! And where all my guests in my Podcast have at least 2 things in common: They are all Creative individuals - and all with an interesting story to be told! "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Ladies n' Genmin please welcome to the GLT Clearing if you will, the BOOMING presence and natural raconteur that IS Jack Klaff! As a Actor, Jack Klaff has been described as being a "one man show" specialist. And indeed he was the first Actor I ever experienced doing just that, whilst I was doing my Drama Teacher Training at the "Central School of Screech & Trauma" (!) in London, circa 1980's before coming to Bristol to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. I experienced him as being in his 'absolute element', commanding the stage with his BOOMING voice, versatility and strength of characterisation.A truly impressive stage presence indeed.Jack Klaff is a South African born Actor, Writer, Academic and fellow Bristol Old Vic Theatre School alumni. He is a complete natural. You'll notice it doesn't take much to get him on the 'open road' of letting his thinking unfold! And what a rich, textured and multi-layered conversation it is...(He is also a wonderful test for an interviewer, as he is, I experienced, quite difficult to interrupt when in full flow!)So - pull up a cup of coffee - or even better a glass of wine or two - and why not give it a good listening to? (See what I'm doing there?!)Enjoy! You can Watch/Listen to Jack's interview on Vimeo here:https://vimeo.com/473727198He has held professorships at Princeton University and Starlab. Amongst his early screen roles were in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) as Red Four and For Your Eyes Only (1981) as Apostis.Hurrah! So - thanks for listening to another episode of a "GLT with me CG!"The Podcast series that features "The Clearing": Where all good questions come to be asked and all good stories come to be told! And today, I'm delighted to welcome to The "GLT Clearing", Dame Eric Potts! Eric is wonderful Actor - a very funny man indeed - a warm and generous friend - a great singer - and a true Pantomime Dame of Distinction!Just Google him and you will see!Eric and I trained together at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. As testament to his wonderful warmth and generosity, when I invited Eric to let me have some Programme notes for his Episode, this is what he wrote:"I had the honour of training alongside Chris Grimes at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School far too long ago to remember before embarking on a short National Tour together of a very intense, possibly traumatic two-hander play (about Maximillian Kolbe of Auchwitz) which allowed us to savour the delights of such theatrical Meccas as Slough, Derby and the length and breadth of the Isle of Man. Despite the artistic depth of the piece and the venue list this proved to be a remarkably enjoyable experience both creatively and personally. It was a real joy to catch up with Chris again on one of his fabulous “A Good Listening To” Podcasts, dredging from the indulgent depths of theatrical anecdotary a few memories that surprised him and, as you will see, surprised me too! Give it a listen - it's only an hour and the telly is rubbish these days! Eric.”A true delight of a conversation together indeed! So - thanks for listening to another episode of a "GLT with me CG!"The Podcast series that features "The Clearing": Where all good questions come to be asked and all good stories come to be told! And absolutely delighted to be bringing to the "The GLT Clearing" today, "Queen of the Americas", "Super Coach", Actress and friend, Jennifer Ryan Peery Logue! We both have Working Voices - the Global Communication Skills Training Company - in common.Jennifer is Head of Working Voices America! During her 12 years at Working Voices Jennifer has pioneered their women's leadership courses, as well as developing and delivering global programs for some of the world's largest institutions across the law, financial services and fashion. As an Actress, Jen is an Improviser - has done "Stand-Up" - and she is a regular performer in a long running Irish-Bar-based Theatre Show called "Our Bar" in New York.As described by Time Out in New York:"Our Bar" is an immersive, site-specific monthly show, where the audience is thrust into "10 all-new mini-plays that unfold all around them at an Irish bar. A new slate of mostly comic scenes is prepared for each edition".Jen is also - I would say - "healthily obsessed" with HBO's Epic Series "Game of Thrones" - and in a parallel Universe she would definitely live at Targaryen's House (!) and have a clutch of pet Dragons to ride around on, as Queen Khaleesi! However in THIS Universe, Jen is often to be seen "breathing fire" in the back of New York Taxis. She definitely "has a thing" about not being 'taken for a ride' in that regard! Wo-betide you if you happen to be driving in a New York Cab and you take a wrong turn with your meter running!(Also instead of a having a pet Dragon, Jennifer actually has a very small dog called Hazelnut, who she very definitely coudn't ride around on!) "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Welcome to a very special Episode of "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! And I'm very happy to be in "GLT Clearing" today with a lovely man - a really good friend - and fellow Comedy Improvisation performer, Mike Akers - also known as the legend that IS "Reverend Lemon!"I have had the great joy of standing alongside Mike many times - helping many an audience to laugh over many years together - appearing in my Comedy Improvisation Company and ongoing 'passion project' which is INSTANT WIT. We also have the great delight of co-facilitating a Comedy Improvisation Event with other members of INSTANT WIT once a year (the "Zombie Apocalypse" notwithstanding!) at one of the most beautiful places on the planet - in SW France - surrounded on 3 sides by Sunflowers! It's at www.lessoeursanglaises.com - a majestic space and venue curated by the very lovely Katie Elliott Armitage, who I have also had in "The Clearing" in another Episode. The Workshop that we run is called "INSTANT WIT Laughter Lab" where we invite (what always turns out to be a lovely Group each year) to join us in exploring the wonderfully liberating Comedy Improvisational mindset of "yes and..." Each year it's one of my very very favourite things to do!Mike is also (he won't mind my saying - because it's also true!) my Table Tennis bitch! In Mike's own words:Writer, Theatre Maker, Early Years Specialist"Hi, I'm Mike. Thanks for stopping by. I work in theatre because I love telling stories. Whether I'm at home in my shed struggling with the first draft of a new play, working in a rehearsal room with a company of actors or listening to a three-year old in a nursery setting tell me a tale they have just invented, story is the common thread that unites all the strands of my work. If you're interested in what I do or in working with me then please get in touch".Mike also talks in the Podcast about a lovely writer's exercise called "The Mysterious Well" .So - thanks for listening to another episode of a "GLT with me CG!"The Podcast series that features "The Clearing": Where all good questions come to be asked and all good stories come to be told! I'll wager he was - on balance - very happy to have had a pen and Doodle Pad to hand!More about Claire:"Claire holds 15 years in driving sustainable results through creating highly stimulating and engaging environments, which challenge employees thinking causing them to broaden and extend their skills beyond what they believed they were capable of. Please welcome to the "GLT Clearing" Ladies n' Genmin, my very special guest and long-term friend, Julian P Page, Managing Director of the Livingstone Tanzania Trust.Julian co-founded the Charity in 2007, after a career changing epiphany and a realisation of a desire to step in and proactively help to bring about change, in a way that went way beyond the more familiar approach by most, of just giving money. He started a Charity that is now supporting many fantastic initiatives that adress the underlying causes of poverty. His wonderful Charity has the ambitious, brave and commendable aim of "adressesing poverty in the African region in all its complex aspects: Offering help and support to empower the community - and crucially staying there as long as it takes - until support is no longer needed or required".And what a wonderful story and account of his journey Julian brings.Julian also explains the African philosophy of "Mbuntu":"How can a person be happy when their neighbour is not?"The Livingstone Tanzania Trust now needs our help more than ever. An organisation whose vision is "to see the people of the Manyara Region unlock their potential, overcome poverty and live long, happy and healthy lives where all are respected and valued."You can find out more about Julian and the the work of the Trust c/o www.livingstonetanzaniatrust.comSo - pull up a cup of coffee (or even better, a glass of wine!) and enjoy the ride! And thank you for listening to another episode of a "GLT with me CG!"If you'd like to find out more, then please do check out my websites www.secondcurve.uk + www.instantwit.co.uk - and there's also a dedicated "Good Listening To" Facebook Group c/o the link above.Plus if you'd be interested in the experience of being given "a damn good listening to" yourself, or you'd like to explore the idea of some Personal Impact Coaching from me CG - to help level-up your confidence, communication, and personal impact c/o my online Coaching proposition: The Second Curve "Zoom Room" - then, by all means, do get in touch via any of the usual social media channels (see above) or you can email me at chris@secondcurve.uk (The Second Curve "Zoom Room": Coaching to get you to the next level - or Clarity on how to get to "where next?")

Please welcome to the "GLT Clearing" Ladies n' Genmin', Australian adventurers, LinkedIn explorers and super-hero husband and wife team, Stephen and Donna Fry!Stephen and Donna Fry are on an extraordinary mission and quest together, to "meet at least one new person every single day, throughout the 366 days of this year". Erm - and what a year, in particular, this has been!Stephen set out on his "Epic Quest" this year, blissfully unaware about what 2020 in particular would bring! Who knew that his journey would be spanning a Global Pandemic?! But continuing on his journey undeterred (with his wife and biggest fan Donna accompanying him as his Producer!) Stephen set out - in his own words - to overcome his "innate introversion" by an act of "overt extoversion": By meeting and interviewing somebody new every single day of this year! What a great quest and idea. And what a lovely, rich conversation we had!(In fact they got in touch to interview me first: I was Day 289 of their journey, so this interview is my chance to reciprocate!)So - pull up a cup of coffee (or even better, a glass of wine!) and enjoy the ride!

Ladies n' Genmin, absolutely delighted to welcome to the "GLT Clearing", the wise and wonderful Nick Fordham, currently based in Hong Kong! Nick Fordham has been described as being "the most highly saught-after soft-skills trainer in Asia" - or as I like to call him "the most saught after man in Asia in soft trainers!" Chortle!Nick is a friend, facilitator, coach and a very wise man. And as I knew all along - he'd be well worth "giving a damn good listening to" indeed - and he doesn't dissapoint!Nick and I also work together at Working Voices. Most recently at a big global client gathering in Abu Dhabi - at the very end of last year. This is a wonderful rich-and -textured conversation, with some great stories to enjoy along the way: About Nick and his the creative process as an ex-actor, faciltator - and as an extremely talented Coach with "top-tips a-plenty" to share and divulge. We talk about the profound power of "reframing" in Coaching - and Nick's first experience of it, in the form of some very powerful advice indeed from his father, at the age of 23, when Nick was at a low point in his life and career. But also - as you'll hear - this was also a profound point of "new beginnings" for Nick, and indeed the notion of "reframing" continues to carry him along to where he is to this day.Nick is a superb conversationalist and there are many great stories and "Eureka moments" to enjoy along the way.Listen to Nick's story about the creative process - and about "Dare to Suck" in the context of the band Aerosmith in particular!(I've created a special "Chapter" here in the Podcast dedicated to that story!) Ladies n Genmin' welcome to a particularly special Episode of a "GLT with me CG!"Please welcome to the "Good Listening To Clearing" a comedy hero of mine:"Tweedy the Clown" from the wonderful and magical Gifford's Circus! My entire extended family - a squad of 9 of us - have been going to Gifford's Circus for the last 17 of their 20 year history, normally during their late Summer residency at Minchinhampton Common, always as a thoroughly enjoyable and significant marker of "another year passed".Tweedy the Clown, with his pet iron "Keef" and his dispensing of lollies c/o his iconic "I've got a lo-lly!" ("You've not got one! You're such a loo-ser!") song - along with his extraordinary repetoire of comic business has always been the absolute 'centre-piece' for us all. This year has been particularly poignant in the history of Gifford's Circus. Founder Nell Gifford sadly passed away at the very end of last year - even before the extra extra challenge of the Pandemic itself - but thankfully her legacy and the story of Gifford's looks set to continue.Tweedy is a true "Vaudevillian" and clown in the Stan Laurel style, which is why I was particularly keen and happy to talk to him!Enjoy!Tweedy's "Clearing" - reassuringly and quite right too - is the Circus arena itself, where all the magic, alchemy & gold is dispensed.Tweedy shares his story and journey of how he came to clowning - and subsequently to Gifford's Circus itself.Plus his story of how a fire in the middle of a 'comedy cake routine' led to his iconic red tuft of hair scorching into being, as Tweedy found his "true clown".Enjoy! And thank you for listening to a "GLT with me CG!"If you'd like to find out more, then please do check out my websites www.secondcurve.uk + www.instantwit.co.uk - and there's also a dedicated "Good Listening To" Facebook Group c/o the link above.Plus if you'd be interested in the experience of being given "a damn good listening to" yourself, or you'd like to explore the idea of some Personal Impact Coaching from me CG - to help level-up your confidence, communication, and personal impact c/o my online Coaching proposition: The Second Curve "Zoom Room" - then, by all means, do get in touch via any of the usual social media channels (see above) or you can email me at chris@secondcurve.uk (The Second Curve "Zoom Room": Coaching to get you to the next level - or Clarity on how to get to "where next?")

My great friend and business partner (in Second Curve) is Tom Cassidy. I also have the great pleasure of working alongside Tom at Working Voices, which is where we first met 10 years ago this year. Tom is one of the best and most intuitive coaches and facilitators that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He is also Head of Executive Coaching at the mighty Working Voices. Here he is being given a "Damn Good Listening To" as a taste of his own medicine (!) in this one of my very first episodes of a "GLT with me CG!"Tom was kind enough to let me "have a go on him first" when I first got going with the idea!So pull up a cup of coffee - or a glass of wine - sit back - relax - and listen to Tom as he joins me in "The Clearing " to share his deep understanding of the human psyche. He provides insite also as to how - as leaders - through the energy that we utilise and transmit, we can empower others to be more truly authentic and perform at their very best. You can find out more about Tom Cassidy c/o the Working Voices website at www.workingvoices.com or at Second Curve c/o www.secondcurve.ukAnd thanks for listening to a "GLT with me CG!"If you'd like to find out more, then please do check out my websites www.secondcurve.uk + www.instantwit.co.uk - and there's also a dedicated "Good Listening To" Facebook Group c/o the link above.Plus if you'd be interested in the experience of being given "a damn good listening to" yourself, or you'd like to explore the idea of some Personal Impact Coaching from me CG - to help level-up your confidence, communication, and personal impact c/o my online Coaching proposition: The Second Curve "Zoom Room" - then, by all means, do get in touch via any of the usual social media channels (see above) or you can email me at chris@secondcurve.uk (The Second Curve "Zoom Room": Coaching to get you to the next level - or clarity on how to get to "where next?")

Charles Handy is one a giant of contemporary thought. His books on management – including "Understanding Organisations" and "Gods of Management" – have changed the way we view business. His work on broader issues and trends – such as "Beyond Certainty" – has changed the way we view society. In "The Second Curve", he builds on a life's work to glimpse into the future and see what challenges and opportunities lie ahead. He looks at current trends in capitalism and asks whether it is a sustainable system. He explores the dangers of a society built on credit. He challenges the myth that remorseless growth is essential. He even asks whether we should rethink our roles in life – as students, parents, workers and voters – and what the aims of an ideal society of the future should be. Provocative and thoughtful as ever, he sets out the questions we all need to ask ourselves – and points us toward some answers. I was fortunate to spend an evening with Charles in his home in London. He is an incredible man with an intriguing view of things. This was a memorable moment for me as I met a personal hero. We discuss: Disruption Efficiency v Effectiveness Management v Leadership Purpose Shamrock Organisations Doughnut Projects Communities in Organisations Education Parenting and so much more
Business commentator and social philosopher Charles Handy speaks to Peter Day about his new book, The Second Curve, and asks if we should all plan on reinventing ourselves in later life to take advantage of new trends, innovations and ideas that will affect the future world of work
