S6E36 - THE TWO KENS: Why So Many Americans Cheer Cruelty

The Beached White Male Podcast with Ken Kemp

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 15, 2025 46:20

Send us a textThis week, Ken Fong and I take on a sobering question: Why do so many Americans celebrate cruelty? With the help of British psychiatrist Dr. Russell Razzaque, we explore the mental state of Donald Trump and the deeper dynamics that fuel authoritarian behavior. At the core? Fear. Not fear of crime or poverty—but of losing status, especially among white men who once held unchallenged social dominance. We look at the disturbing celebration of cruelty—like the now-infamous photo of Trump, Marco Rubio, and Kristi Noem laughing in front of cages at “Alligator Alcatraz,” a holding camp for migrants. For many in the MAGA base, this isn't about policy—it's about resentment, superiority, and pushing others down to feel powerful again.Drawing on insights from David Brooks and Alasdair MacIntyre, we trace how our culture shifted from communal virtue to individual preference. We've moved from the language of “duty” and “honor” to the language of “want” and “leverage.” And in doing so, we've lost the moral grounding that once came from religion, tradition, and community. The 2024 award-winning German feature film, The Zone of Interest, makes the powerful, dramatic point. We humans can be so focused on our personal comfort and well-being that we remain oblivious to the callous cruelty and inhuman brutality right next door.We also ask: How did compassion and humility get replaced by bile and demonstrative cruelty? Why does backing and supporting Trump feel personal and set in stone to his followers? And how do we reclaim a moral vocabulary that elevates character over charisma? Finally, don't miss our call to action: Join the Good Trouble movement this month. Protest. Speak up. Reclaim our shared values.LINKS: Psychiatrist Russell Razzaque, M.D.ATLANTIC David BrooksFILM: ZONE OF INTERESTGOOD TROUBLE Protest Support the showBecome a Patron - Click on the link to learn how you can become a Patron of the show. SEASON 3 EPISODE 144: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Well, there it is, finally - the perfect storm that can dethrone or at least deplete Trump and of course it's his fault. HE has openly admitted he's covering up the Epstein Files, and he has in essence confessed he's in the Epstein Files. The problem is a simple one: Trump promised to give them pedophiles. They were promised politician pedophiles. They were promised that the politicians who were covering up Epstein were the pedophiles. And then one day Trump suddenly decided to announce that HE was the politician who was covering up Epstein and he SCOLDED them and HUMILIATED them and YELLED at them for challenging his god-ordained RIGHT to cover up Epstein, and they said in their confusion “but you promised us that you would reveal the pedophile politicians that were covering up Epstein and…wait a minute... that means...” As of mid-afternoon Trump was getting ratioed, on his own social media site, nearly 4:1 by angry, confused, moronic MAGAs. They have lived and died by his insistence that only pedophile politicians personally implicated in the Epstein documents and "client list" would be keeping them from being released. Now his two conflicting piles of bull have clashed, and he has been buried under them. UNFORTUNATELY TRUMP'S RESPONSE is utterly predictable: he will double down on Trump-ISIS atrocities, on torturing immigrants. It will give his 'people' the snuff films they want and may deflect their rage, at least for awhile. But remember, any time you see ICE threatening kids, to shout "Watcha doin? Grabbing those kids so Trump can take them to Epstein Island?" B-Block (30:46) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Karoline Leavitt thinks her conference calls are being interfered with by the devil. Riley Gaines' reward for stirring up murderous hate against Trans people? She gets to audition for Fox, and conflate criticism of Israel with antisemitism. Her skills are so varied: she's 85th best in swimming AND propaganda! And then there's winner Caitlin Francis, a rando from California who has the kind of advice only a homeschooling MAGA mother can present to you: dogs and cats have no souls, so if their vet bills exceed $1000, kill them. Say, Mrs. Francis, what's your over-under on your sick kids? (44:17) SPORTSBALLCENTER: Would you like to play in tomorrow night's baseball All-Star Game? Because that's the only stunt they have left to save the dying exhibition, now that they've decided that five big league games is sufficient experience to be an All-Star? And the floodgates may have just opened in St. Louis, where a pro sports team is eliminating its separate radio and TV play-by-play teams and simulcasting. This is the future, and it's not pretty. C-Block (1:05:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Somebody asked me what was my favorite joke that I ever did on the air. So here's a bunch - starring Albert Hall, the Takko-Bell trade, and the day the Reading Phillies set me up to get ejected from a minor league baseball game.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

David Waldman and Greg Dworkin follow another Trump Weekend™ with another Monday KITM! YAY! QAnon was right — THEY don't want you to know! Imagine MAGA's surprise, and everyone else's lack of surprise, when “They” turned out to be Trump. Trump's Epstein cover-up (The latest cover-up, that is, as Trump has covered for Epstein forever.) could tear apart MAGA as a portion of them actually believe what they've been saying, and for most of them, this issue is the most complex that they are prepared to handle. Heads must roll, and that never means Trump. Therefore, Ghislaine Maxwell is making certain that all of her prison security cameras are in tiptop condition today. Dan Bongino was too undisclosed to clock into work this morning. That leaves Pam Bondi, She-Wolf of the DOJ, who has just fired her personal ethics chief. Kash Patel threatens to show up even less at work if Pam stays. Eight men were told that they were being sent to Louisiana but ended up in Djibouti. Following the orders of armed masked men never turns out well. Kristi Noem expects that more bureaucracy, more paperwork, more delays and more inefficiencies will lead to more government savings. Fewer survivors equal even more savings. Of course, in central Texas, a functioning government equals Communism. In New York City, voters see things differently.

It's unthinkable. At a time when Americans are dealing with a staggering loss of life and were in need of immediate help from the federal government, they got put on hold. Why were search and rescue teams not allowed to set up near the flooding until days after it started? Because Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem decided she needs to personally authorize all costly contracts. Her policy slowed down FEMAs response during a critical time. Meanwhile, good people are out of a job for nothing. DOGE eliminated National Weather Service jobs, but now Trump's nominee to lead NOAA says he wants to hire people to fill those jobs again.

Today's Headlines: President Trump signed his sweeping budget bill into law. The law eliminates taxes on silencers and some firearms, adds new taxes on remittances, and includes bizarre provisions like $40 million for a MAGA statue garden and Trump-branded savings accounts for babies. It extends Trump's 2017 tax cuts, slashes Medicaid (projected to leave 12 million uninsured), defunds Planned Parenthood reimbursements, and guts food assistance while ballooning ICE's budget to over $100 billion. Elon Musk, furious over the bill's impact on his business, announced a vague new “America Party” as his teen protégé “Big Balls” was hired by the Social Security Administration. Meanwhile, 79 people died in sudden Texas floods, FEMA grant programs are quietly being withdrawn, and Kristi Noem is under scrutiny for accepting undisclosed payments from a nonprofit promoting her political ambitions. On the global stage, Trump's trade war deadline looms with only 3 of 90 deals finalized, and up to 70% tariffs threatened for non-compliant countries. Proximity talks between Israel and Hamas resume this week in Qatar, as Netanyahu visits the White House following Israel's rejection of Hamas's latest ceasefire demands. In this no-holds-barred episode, Shipwreck unpacks the chaos surrounding Trump's Big Beautiful Bill, sharing skepticism over its AI provisions and the endless culture war it fuels. She dives into viral claims that migrants are being dumped into the ocean from cargo planes, a conspiracy she methodically dismantles while pointing out the absurdity of the rumor mill. From the real story behind “Alligator Alcatraz,” Florida's new migrant facility, to Kristi Noem's claim that a deportee started eating himself mid-flight, the episode is equal parts darkly hilarious and unsettling. Shipwreck also tackles the meltdown over Nancy Mace livestreaming in her pajamas, her personal burnout with performative compassion, and why defending bad behavior “on your own side” only feeds the cult mentality. Ranting about DUIs, predators using trans activism as cover, and the collapse of basic decency online, she ends by reflecting on whether humanity is even worth saving. With tangents about Kathy Griffin looking like Pennywise, the sewage pouring across the southern border, and the illusion of positive social media, this is Shipwreck at her raw, unscripted best.
