Dr. Sven Schimpf is the Managing Director of the Fraunhofer Group for Innovation Research and the Director of the Institute for Human Engineering and Empathic Design at Pforzheim University. He is involved in research, education, training, and mentoring in the field of innovation. Sven has conducted extensive studies on roadmapping and has a degree in Business Administration and a doctorate in Engineering earned during his tenure as part of CC R&D Management at Fraunhofer IAO. Throughout his career, he has actively engaged in national and international research and consulting projects, collaborating with various industrial companies to enhance their R&D strategies, processes, and organization. His focus lies in the realm of strategic R&D and innovation management, where he dedicates himself to monitoring, evaluating, and incorporating potentially disruptive advancements. Today, Sven and I discuss the findings of the updated roadmapping study conducted by the Fraunhofer Group for Innovation Research with three other organizations. We discuss how organizations use roadmapping and the challenges they face. We highlight the importance of clear communication and why excessive details should be avoided in roadmaps. We analyze how software developers can use the insights gained from the study to improve their roadmapping processes. Sven explains the basics of roadmapping and why mismatches between market-oriented information sources and the responsibility for roadmapping occur. We also discuss how organizations can enhance their strategic planning and decision-making processes, foster creativity, envision ambitious futures, and uniquely engage stakeholders. “There is huge potential because in the long run production technologies there are a lot of things happening and they are enabling the development of the next—or the generation after this— generation of products and services.” Dr. Sven Schimpf This week on Innovation Talks: ● The definition of roadmapping and why it is important ● An overview of the roadmapping study ● The types of companies that participated in the study ● Why there is a lack of marketing involvement in roadmapping ● The importance of sharing roadmaps with stakeholders ● The best processes to manage and update roadmaps ● Roadmapping software recommendations ● Why detail makes roadmaps less useful Connect with Dr. Sven Schimpf ● Dr. Sven Schimpf (https://qepler.com/speakers/sven-schimpf.html) ● Dr. Sven Schimpf on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sven-schimpf-a527261b/) ● Fraunhofer Group for Innovation Research Roadmapping Study (https://publica.fraunhofer.de/entities/publication/b52af96f-a870-4660-837e-49d0f9db3c92/details) ● Fraunhofer Group on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/fraunhofer-gesellschaft/) This Podcast is brought to you by Sopheon Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Innovation Talks. Invitados: …. Special guest, Gary Polain, Founder and Principal of Ozmosis Leadership, sits down with Tammy Birklid to discuss how his early career as a Mechanical Engineer led him to a passion for helping others succeed in what he calls "Human Engineering" — Forging long-term relationships with prime movers of organizations—CEOs, presidents and business leaders to help them build profitable, preferred places to work. Gary shares his insights on the importance of personal development, learning to be more curious and asking more questions. He also reveals the most important skill of a leader as well as the number one mistake he sees leaders make. A native born Western Australian, Gary began his professional career as a Mechanical Engineer specializing in power station design, dust pollution control and mine ventilation systems. Gary has over the last thirty-two years committed himself to a most accomplished career in ‘Human Engineering'. Gary is an expert at developing strategies that get management teams working collaboratively and effectively to create long-term, measurable change. He has given keynote presentations throughout Australia, Canada, USA and England, and has either trained and coached over 16,000 people. He consults to multi-national corporations, small businesses, associations and community service groups on a variety of subjects including: Strategic Thinking, Executive Coaching, Leadership Development, Change Management and Consultative Sales. Human Factors is applied to many domains, but perhaps one of the most challenging is the Space environment due to the very nature that it is not of this world. That, coupled with a challenge of a new space race, firstly with the mission to Mars, but also the commercialisation of the sector, makes working there a very exciting place. But it also helps to have the right people doing the right job. In this episode, I interview 3 HF Practitioners from Johnson Space Centre (JSC) who are largely focused on the Orion spacecraft which is part of the wider Artemis programme, they are: Sarah Margerum -- anthropometry/bio-mechanics and modelling human factors https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarah-margerum-0116818/ Jason Hutt -- Orion Crew Systems Integration (and liaison to Human Engineering team) https://www.linkedin.com/in/jason-hutt-2b0a1828/ William Foley -- Leading Orion Human Engineering team https://www.linkedin.com/in/william-foley-26b19510/ They give us an insight into the challenges that they are dealing with, as well as the Human Factors capability they have at their fingertips. Its also worth highlighting that the team they outline is only at JSC, there is also another (vast) team at Kennedy Space Centre (KSC).

Not too long ago nobody carried a mobile phone; now almost everybody does. That’s the kind of rate of rapid progress we’re seeing with our ability to directly edit genomes. With the use of CRISPR-Cas9 and other techniques, gene editing is becoming commonplace. How does that work — and perhaps more importantly, how are we going to put it to use? Fyodor Urnov has worked in this area from its beginning, having coined the term “gene editing.” We talk about how this new technology can be used to cure or prevent disease, as well as the pros and cons of designer babies.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Fyodor Urnov received his Ph.D. in Biology from Brown University. He is currently professor of Genetic, Genomics, and Development in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley, as well as Director for Technology and Translation at the Innovative Genomics Institute. His research focuses on using CRISPR gene-editing techniques to develop treatments for sickle cell disease, radiation injury, and other conditions, as well as guiding IGI researchers as they bring these therapies from the lab to the clinic.Web pageGoogle Scholar publicationsInnovative Genomics InstituteTalk on “The Next Generation of Edited Humans”TwitterTodays episode is sponsored by The Great Courses Plus. Elizabeth Bader always thought her main "career" would involve being a wife and mother. But by her early 30s, she was the divorced, single mother to a toddler and desperately in need of career advice. In this Career Talk podcast, Bader explains how she got back into the workforce, offers advice on those seeking similar careers and provides tips for others who may have been out of the workforce, by their own choosing or otherwise. Transcript: Welcome to Brandman Speaks: Career Talks. I’m Cindy O’Dell and recently I spoke with Elizabeth Bader, an executive briefing consultant at Experian. Elizabeth always thought she was destined to be a wife and mother. But when she was in her early 30s, she was newly divorced and the single mother of a young child. Like so many Brandman students, she realized she needed a career. She just wasn’t sure what it would be. I was very fortunate that I learned about the Women’s Opportunity Center, which sadly no longer exists. But it was a wonderful place where women in transition could go to get a career counseling, resume assistance, interviewing skills on a sliding scale. And I had the great fortune of meeting a woman who became my mentor and my friend and she was able to coach me into identifying the next step in my career path, which included starting a master's degree program at Chapman University. But before starting back to school, Elizabeth needed to know what to study. I took some aptitude testing, which I highly recommend. I took the Johnson O'Connor Center for Human Engineering testing in Los Angeles, which is a two-day commitment with a financial, but I highly recommend aptitude testing whether its Myers-Briggs or Strength Finder or many that are available. I believe that some are available through the Brandman Career Counseling Center, either at nominal or no charge. If you haven't taken aptitude and interest testing, it's a great way to learn about yourself and to find out perhaps how you're naturally made, which always makes school and work a lot more enjoyable. So I did this aptitude testing and I discovered my strengths were in psychology and sociology. And so as I started looking for occupations or vocations within those segments, I stumbled upon graduate school programs. And initially, I thought I was going to be a career counselor and get my master's degree in career counseling. However as I was researching graduate programs I came across the organizational leadership program at Chapman and decided to pursue that, and that, you know, fundamentally changed the trajectory of my career and myself as a person. I had read a book by Warren Bennis in the late ‘90s that actually was on the bestseller list on becoming a leader. And I think it was probably one of the first books that ever crossed over into the mainstream. And I read it and I thought, “Really? People do this? This is the career?” And I had no idea. So when I found the organizational leadership program. I said, “Wow, this is awesome!” so I decided to pursue the organizational leadership program. It just made so much sense and my career counselor just said, you know, I lit up -- my whole .. my eyes, my person, and my demeanor changed when we were doing talking about that curriculum. Being in school also introduced her to a new network of connections. I was very fortunate. A classmate of mine was that Ingram Micro at the time and she was in the training development department, and I desperately needed to get back to work and start honing my skills and I was willing to work for free. And at the time, there was a gentleman there who was a like-minded soul who was the head of the department and gave me a chance, which is what everyone usually needs someone to open the door and invite you in to participate.
