Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 is an earnest picture; It brought depth to the mythos, and truly did nothing to trample on John Carpenter's original version. There's more character development which presents the opportunity to believe in the characters we care for. To bring more insight to the films, I had the honor and pleasure of speaking with Diane and what she shared is absolute priceless knowledge. The fact that she has been acting for a very long time, and being the daughter in law of Clu Gulager, makes her even more legendary. I love learning from the actors and actresses that I talk to; so much to hear about what happens on set and sharing the behind-the-scenes secrets. Me loving both films: The Feast Trilogy and Rob Zombie's Halloween II – we can learn a lot about someone. Diane has been there; she has raised the bar. No one can play the Biker Queen like Diane and certainly there are only a few that can be at the same level as her.

Let's look over the stack of papers on our desk. Doesn't seem anyone has died too recently but everyone is talking about scary weather. So it must be summer and that puts us right in the mood to talk about frightening beaches where people die suddenly. No, we're not talking about sharks or any famous movies featuring them. We have The Fog(1980). Yes, on the heels of making an iconic slasher film, John Carpenter got license to make a movie about ghost pirates. Naturally they called it the fog because that's what the ghost pirates send in ahead. Which makes a lot of scenes in this movie like an angry … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 244: Accounting Fog"

It began with a disagreement, and it led to the near total decimation of life on Earth. Those who survived hoped to rebuild society, but they faced foes in the forms of sterility and mutant frogpeople. In this thought-provoking episode of Spellbreakers, Matt Trump revisits the gritty legacy of New York City through the lens of John Carpenter's Escape from New York and the recent Democratic primary upheaval. He dives deep into the election of Zoran Kwame Mamdani, a self-described socialist whose sweeping proposals, like rent control and prison releases, spark fresh questions about whether New York is sliding back into its infamous chaos. Matt unpacks the legendary Kitty Genovese murder, dissecting how the New York Times fabricated the infamous bystander narrative that branded the city as apathetic and doomed. He shows how this distorted reporting became a psychological weapon used to reshape public perception of urban life for decades. The discussion then pivots to cultural memories of 9/11, the strange urgency to police criticism of Islam afterward, and the enduring narrative manipulations that drive public fear and division. Part true crime, part cultural critique, and part cautionary tale, this episode challenges listeners to question how media shapes reality, and whether today's narratives are any more trustworthy.

Hi there, friends! It's the third and final part of our "The Thing" series. And we're finally going back to 1982 to talk about the classic, John Carpenter's "The Thing", starring Kurt Russell. This one is a daunting movie to discuss, as we know there are a lot of huge fans of it, plus it's been talked about a ton on other podcasts. So we did our best to talk about it in the fun and loving way we try to talk about all the movies we watch. We also talk about a new horror store that recently opened in Burbank, Killer Fitness. And of course, stay tuned until the end to hear what Andrew chose for our next movie!"The Thing" is the second adaptation of John W. Campbell's novella, "Who Goes There?" It's a closer adaptation than the 1951 movie, retaining the alien's ability to imitate any living thing it comes in contact with, and how the men at Outpost 51 deal with it.Feel free to send us a message! The legend in the small, coastal town of Antonio Bay is of a ship lured to the land and swallowed up by a mysterious thick cloud as it sank. The locals say when the fog returns, the dead will arise from their watery graves. The Fog, directed by John Carpenter, fits quite nicely into Retro Reel 2025. It stars horror greats such as Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, and Hal Holbrook and like most Carpenter films, features an electric soundtrack. The film gives off eerie vibes and has multiple character stories that are bridged together quite nicely as the secrets of Antonio Bay are revealed throughout the movie. While the film is not without its flaws, it's fun to watch a mystery, ghost story, and revenge plot all wrapped into one. The film writer Meg Shields returns to the podcast from Vancouver for a show to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Tobe Hooper's schlock sci-fi horror masterpiece, Lifeforce.Cannon Films' big swing for the fences, Lifeforce had an astronomical budget for the time, with huge practical sets, hundreds of extras and innovative special effects from the great John Dykstra including massive miniature work and cutting-edge optical effects, all in the service of a bonkers tribute to Hammer horror. The runaway production was a cocaine-and-Dr Pepper-fueled vision of naked space vampires hiding in Halley's Comet (led by the beautiful Mathilda May) who arrive on Earth and unleash havoc on the city of London. We discuss 1955's The Quatermass Xperiment and 1967's Quatermass and The Pit, huge influences on John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper, before diving into the madness of Lifeforce, rejected by audiences in 1985 and setting off the eventual collapse of Cannon Films. We also compare the two cuts of the movie (as the American distributor Tri-Star changed the title from Space Vampires and shortened their version by 10 minutes against the director's will) and how this crazy movie has stood the test of time to become a cult favourite.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Boys and ghouls, allow me to tell you about the mad doctor who injects himself with an experimental serum, turning the scientist into a hideous monster that terrorizes a hospital. This twisted tale is from the mind of Richard Lyford, a 19-year-old indie filmmaker in Seattle, who wrote, directed and starred in the short horror film The Scalpel. But he wasn’t influenced by horror legends like John Carpenter or Wes Craven or George Romero. No, The Scalpel was filmed in 1936, and film historians considered it lost for almost 90 years. It’s now been restored and re-edited, and been accepted to more than 150 film festivals throughout the country. In 1996, the world of video gaming was forever changed by the release of Capcom's “survival horror” masterwork “Resident Evil” on the Sony PlayStation. In fact, the term “survival horror”, now a common-place name for a subgenre of horror gaming, was originated by “Resident Evil”.Survival horror itself can be defined as a genre of video games with a focus on surviving in a threatening, often supernatural or disturbing environment, with an emphasis on a more vulnerable central character, tension, limited resources and combat as a last resort.Sound like a vast number of great horror games that have come since the original “Resident Evil”?Whether it's the steeped in atmospheric dread of the “Silent Hill” franchise, the cosmic Lovecraftian terror of the “Dead Space” games, the nerve-frying corridors of the “Amnesia” series or the Stephen King-esque small town horror of “Alan Wake” and its sequel, the influence of “Resident Evil” has played a pivotal role in forming horror gaming. In this episode I am joined by the stars of the most recent “Resident Evil” games. They have taken the three most iconic characters of the franchise and not only made them their own, but also brought real gravity and psychological complexity that has helped redefine the series and what we thought we could expect from it.Welcome Nicole Tompkins who plays Jill Valentine in the “Resident Evil 3” reimaging and the animated film “Resident Evil: Death Island” as well as Daniela Dimitrescu and Elena in “Resident Evil Village”, Jeff Schine who plays Carlos in the “Resident Evil 3” reimagining and Chris Redfield in “Resident Evil Village” and Nick Apostolides who plays Leon Kennedy in the reimagining's of “Resident Evil 2” and “Resident Evil 4” as well as the TV mini-series “Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness”.We discuss their approaches to adapting these legacy characters, the indelible imprint of the franchise, how it's not as different from film acting as some may think, as well as their most requested line readings. Let's explore the dangers of Raccoon City and beyond, survive a world of endless zombies and undead Doberman's, expose shadowy secret evil organizations and visit a village of crazed occultist with Nicole Tompkins, Jeff Schine and Nick Apostolides! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
When 49-year-old former sitcom star Bob Crane was found murdered in 1978, detectives quickly honed in on their one and only suspect: Bob's friend and confidant, John Carpenter. It took years to finally bring John to trial, but when they did — there wasn't enough evidence to convict him. To this day, Bob Crane's murder remains unsolved. HOUR ONE: It's rumored that an arcade game from 1980 might lead to the real death of its players. We'll look at the death curse of Berzerk. (The Berzerker Death Curse, And The Polybius Urban Legend) *** And another arcade game in the early 80s was surrounded by controversy – because the game never existed, despite so many saying it did. Or did it exist? We'll look at the urban legend of Polybius. (The Urban Legend of Polybius)==========HOUR TWO: Was Stanley Stiers the real-life inspiration for Michael Myers in 1978's John Carpenter film, “Halloween?” (The Real Michael Myers) *** The last known words of Peter Rugg were “Let the storm increase! I will see home tonight in spite of the last tempest, or I may never see home!" Over two-hundred years later and he has yet to make it home – but that hasn't stopped his tempest! (The Eternal Ride of Peter Rugg) *** Imagine attending college for several years, only to find out that the whole time you've been studying on top of the corpses of thousands of mental patients. That's exactly what happened in 2013 when The University of Mississippi made plans to expand parking for their students and staff. (The Corpses Under The University of Mississippi) *** Dealing with a ghost or two is awful enough – but what if you're attacked by a whole gang of ghouls? It was reported as real news in 1889's Chicago Tribune! (A Whole Gang O' Ghosts) *** People With Super Powers!==========SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME: Michael Bryson disappeared on August 5th, 2020 from Hobo Campground at Umpqua National Forest. He has yet to be found. (The Disappearance of Michael Bryson) *** When it comes to cryptids, you have many to choose from – Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the chupacabra, the list goes on and on. But I'm willing to bet nowhere on the list of your favorite cryptids, or even the cryptids you've ever heard of, do you have an entry for “The Belled Buzzard” of Texas. (The Belled Buzzard Legend) *** When the Black Plague arrived at Eyam's doorstep in the 17th century, its villagers were forced to choose between life or certain doom. It's the tragic tale of England's Plague Village.
