The summer of the list is over friends! We're back to our regularly scheduled nonsense. And to get back into the groove, we're cooking up a new marathon: Once More with Feeling. The hook? Movies we have seen before, but via their remakes! And we go all the way back to episode one when we covered a John Carpenter classic. We are talking the 2005 remake of Assault on Precinct 13. Arthur finally gets to hop on the mic to talk about the siege story, but how does it hold up to the original? We talk violence, psychoanalysis, Laurence Fishburne, and much, much more. Tune in to hear our thoughts!

This week for the Movies that Turn 30 in 2025 wew're disucssing John Carpenter's In The Mouth Of Madness starring Sam Neil. Before reviewing the movie I break the seal on the new Wild Turkey 101 aged 8 years and even compare it with the Jimmy Russell 70th anniversary release of 8 year old 101.
Originally titled "Stranger in the Night - Halloween (1978)", this found recording was influenced by the collection of "huhs?" and "whuts?" tallied as we watched our favorite horror and thriller films. "That wasn't even scary" became "I would've survived that, come-on now", and the Z-list phenomenon "Survive: The Podcast" was born. In all of this episode's awkwardness and cringe, our passion project was at its purest form, even if the quality could have been filmed on a Super 8 camera in your mom's basement. Tread menacingly and panaflex your guns (or knives) as we investigate John Carpenter's 1978 culture creating classic and horror movie benchmark, "Halloween". This previously recorded episode is apart of our archive of recordings started in 2021 ominously placed on our Patreon. Remakes continue to proliferate on our screens. Over the last few months, we've had live action remakes in cinemas of classic animations Snow White, Lilo And Stitch, and How To Train Your Dragon, along with legacy reboots of the horror hit I Know What You Did Last Summer and DC's Superman, and - coming soon - a new spin on the 1980s comedy The Naked Gun.So is this all just evidence of a dearth of creativity in Hollywood? Or are there some artistically valid reasons to re-make existing films? And can a remake ever be better than the original? Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the past, present and future of the remake. Mark speaks to critic Anne Billson about the remakes she considers worthy of our attention, from Brian De Palma's Scarface to John Carpenter's The Thing. And he also talks with Jim McBride who, in 1983, directed Breathless - a remake of Jean-Luc Godard's French New Wave classic A Bout de Souffle, which Mark has long considered superior to the original.Ellen talks to TV critic Roxana Hadadi about what television can bring to the remake party - and about the TV series that managed to improve on their source material. And Ellen also speaks to Noah Hawley, showrunner of the multi-Emmy winning Fargo and upcoming Alien: Earth TV series, about the creative possibilities of TV reboots. The Halloweenies dust off another John Carpenter classic out of the pile: 1986's Big Trouble in Little China. Requested by oilung, the gang hops aboard the Pork Chop Express to discuss all things Jack Burton, the Lords of Death, the legacy of James Hong, crushing on Kim Cattrall, and the score that keeps on giving. Note: This episode was recorded in January 2024 and is being unlocked because we're, well, we just thought it'd be nice to hear.
Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 is an earnest picture; It brought depth to the mythos, and truly did nothing to trample on John Carpenter's original version. There's more character development which presents the opportunity to believe in the characters we care for. To bring more insight to the films, I had the honor and pleasure of speaking with Diane and what she shared is absolute priceless knowledge. The fact that she has been acting for a very long time, and being the daughter in law of Clu Gulager, makes her even more legendary. I love learning from the actors and actresses that I talk to; so much to hear about what happens on set and sharing the behind-the-scenes secrets. Me loving both films: The Feast Trilogy and Rob Zombie's Halloween II – we can learn a lot about someone. Diane has been there; she has raised the bar. No one can play the Biker Queen like Diane and certainly there are only a few that can be at the same level as her.
In this thirty-fifth installment of fictional horror written and narrated by Dan Cummins.... we return to The Dark World, and meet a new creature that The Architect has created to torment our world: The Ice Hunter. Let's look over the stack of papers on our desk. Doesn't seem anyone has died too recently but everyone is talking about scary weather. So it must be summer and that puts us right in the mood to talk about frightening beaches where people die suddenly. No, we're not talking about sharks or any famous movies featuring them. We have The Fog(1980). Yes, on the heels of making an iconic slasher film, John Carpenter got license to make a movie about ghost pirates. Naturally they called it the fog because that's what the ghost pirates send in ahead. Which makes a lot of scenes in this movie like an angry … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 244: Accounting Fog"

It began with a disagreement, and it led to the near total decimation of life on Earth. In this thought-provoking episode of Spellbreakers, Matt Trump revisits the gritty legacy of New York City through the lens of John Carpenter's Escape from New York and the recent Democratic primary upheaval. He dives deep into the election of Zoran Kwame Mamdani, a self-described socialist whose sweeping proposals, like rent control and prison releases, spark fresh questions about whether New York is sliding back into its infamous chaos. Matt unpacks the legendary Kitty Genovese murder, dissecting how the New York Times fabricated the infamous bystander narrative that branded the city as apathetic and doomed. He shows how this distorted reporting became a psychological weapon used to reshape public perception of urban life for decades. The discussion then pivots to cultural memories of 9/11, the strange urgency to police criticism of Islam afterward, and the enduring narrative manipulations that drive public fear and division. Part true crime, part cultural critique, and part cautionary tale, this episode challenges listeners to question how media shapes reality, and whether today's narratives are any more trustworthy.

Hi there, friends! It's the third and final part of our "The Thing" series. And we're finally going back to 1982 to talk about the classic, John Carpenter's "The Thing", starring Kurt Russell. This one is a daunting movie to discuss, as we know there are a lot of huge fans of it, plus it's been talked about a ton on other podcasts. So we did our best to talk about it in the fun and loving way we try to talk about all the movies we watch. We also talk about a new horror store that recently opened in Burbank, Killer Fitness. And of course, stay tuned until the end to hear what Andrew chose for our next movie!"The Thing" is the second adaptation of John W. Campbell's novella, "Who Goes There?" It's a closer adaptation than the 1951 movie, retaining the alien's ability to imitate any living thing it comes in contact with, and how the men at Outpost 51 deal with it.Feel free to send us a message! The legend in the small, coastal town of Antonio Bay is of a ship lured to the land and swallowed up by a mysterious thick cloud as it sank. The locals say when the fog returns, the dead will arise from their watery graves. The Fog, directed by John Carpenter, fits quite nicely into Retro Reel 2025. It stars horror greats such as Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, and Hal Holbrook and like most Carpenter films, features an electric soundtrack. The film gives off eerie vibes and has multiple character stories that are bridged together quite nicely as the secrets of Antonio Bay are revealed throughout the movie. While the film is not without its flaws, it's fun to watch a mystery, ghost story, and revenge plot all wrapped into one. The late 1970s/early 80s were a fabulous time for escapism. Whether it was to Witch Mountain, from Alcatraz, or from the band Journey. Or whether you were just escaping "the greasies" with Agree. Eric & Ser hope you agree that this movie is the true Great Escape. Send us a text
The film writer Meg Shields returns to the podcast from Vancouver for a show to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Tobe Hooper's schlock sci-fi horror masterpiece, Lifeforce.Cannon Films' big swing for the fences, Lifeforce had an astronomical budget for the time, with huge practical sets, hundreds of extras and innovative special effects from the great John Dykstra including massive miniature work and cutting-edge optical effects, all in the service of a bonkers tribute to Hammer horror. The runaway production was a cocaine-and-Dr Pepper-fueled vision of naked space vampires hiding in Halley's Comet (led by the beautiful Mathilda May) who arrive on Earth and unleash havoc on the city of London. We discuss 1955's The Quatermass Xperiment and 1967's Quatermass and The Pit, huge influences on John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper, before diving into the madness of Lifeforce, rejected by audiences in 1985 and setting off the eventual collapse of Cannon Films. We also compare the two cuts of the movie (as the American distributor Tri-Star changed the title from Space Vampires and shortened their version by 10 minutes against the director's will) and how this crazy movie has stood the test of time to become a cult favourite.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Boys and ghouls, allow me to tell you about the mad doctor who injects himself with an experimental serum, turning the scientist into a hideous monster that terrorizes a hospital. This twisted tale is from the mind of Richard Lyford, a 19-year-old indie filmmaker in Seattle, who wrote, directed and starred in the short horror film The Scalpel. But he wasn’t influenced by horror legends like John Carpenter or Wes Craven or George Romero. No, The Scalpel was filmed in 1936, and film historians considered it lost for almost 90 years. It’s now been restored and re-edited, and been accepted to more than 150 film festivals throughout the country.
