The beginning of any month now seems like a light week for physical media, so Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski only have a few titles to talk about. They include the magnificent starpower of Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in a comically Hitchcockian caper. Jack Nicholson does much more than order in a diner. There's an early LBGTQ film from William Friedkin and the financially successful but creatively bankrupt attempt at a live-action cartoon. Call me Snake. Okay, well, that's too cool for me, so just make it Ryan. Either way, this 739th episode gets into the night life and action frenzy that is John Carpenter's Escape From New York. Kurt Russell was already establishing himself as something more than just a Disney kid, then his signature role here cemented it. The eclectic Van Cleef/Borgnine/Harry Dean supporting cast surrounding Russell is effective, but the production design, cinematography, music and other technicals in this dystopian sci-fi bleakness are the drawing card. Carpenter was cynical, yet so underrated in his time...even compared to a top-of-his-game Spielberg in that same era. Now, is Escape From New York funny? Maybe not (partly since it feels like this could actually happen), but it IS fun. So, even though everybody thinks you're dead, burst into the open-air prison that is Manhattan and save the president and his precious cassette tape. Cuz the name's Ellis. Send us Fan MailTrust is the first thing to freeze in Antarctica. We sit down with Martin and Luke to break down John Carpenter's The Thing, the horror classic that turns a simple premise into pure psychological warfare: if a creature can perfectly imitate any person, how do you prove you're human without tearing your team apart? We talk through the film's most unforgettable set pieces, from the blood test sequence that weaponises silence and eye contact, to the jaw-dropping creature transformations that still look disturbingly real. Practical effects vs CGI becomes a big theme, because The Thing is a showcase of tactile, in-camera filmmaking: real breath in the air, real textures under harsh lighting, and that rare “how did they do that?” feeling modern horror often trades for faster cuts and digital shortcuts. From there we dig into why the paranoia works so well, how the creature manipulates the group with planted evidence and broken resources, and why the environment is more than a backdrop. The cold is an antagonist, the base is a trap, and the ending is a masterstroke of ambiguity that refuses to give easy answers. We also explore the movie's pop culture legacy, from contained thrillers like The Hateful Eight to the whole “impostor among us” blueprint that keeps showing up in film and TV.If you love horror movies, body horror, practical creature effects, or smart suspense filmmaking, hit play. Subscribe to Movies Worth Seeing, share the episode with a friend who thinks CGI is always better, and leave us a review with your take: who do you trust in that final scene? Support the show

This week, Zoë mailed a chunk of her hair to a stranger in Florida. For science. For journalism. For your benefit, really. The $60 hair sample test came back flagging her as "highly reactive" to 210 foods, including emu, ostrich egg, hot dog, and ground horse meat. Reader, she has not eaten ground horse meat in over a decade. The food sensitivity industry is a multi-billion-dollar grift built on real symptoms and fake frameworks. We trace it from 1906, when allergy was first defined as a real clinical thing, through the 1950s clinical ecology movement, through cytotoxic testing, IgG panels, electrodermal screening, and bio-resonance, and finally to the at-home hair test in your DMs. It's the same idea in different packaging every decade. Like a body-snatcher, but for grift. (We use a lot of John Carpenter references in this one.)Then Kylee walks through what the science actually says: the difference between IgE allergies, IgG sensitivities, and intolerances. What real diagnostic testing looks like (skin prick tests, blood panels, hydrogen breath tests, structured elimination diets with a professional). Why hair testing, IgG panels, and bio-resonance devices have no validated diagnostic mechanism. And why these tests disproportionately target women, who are statistically more likely to feel dismissed by their doctors and more likely to seek answers in the wellness market. We also get into why endurance athletes are uniquely vulnerable to this stuff. When your gut acts up during training, the wellness industry hands you a list of 210 foods to eliminate. Your sports dietitian hands you a fueling plan. Guess which one tends to lead to a stress fracture. The bottom line: your symptoms deserve a real answer. As I started to look to 2026, I knew there was still more to cover in this series beyond what we hit upon in the five episodes last year in discussing authoritarianism in cinema. One of the richest genres doing that was science fiction which, coincidentally, is what led to my emphasis on the genre this year. With such a vast subject, there was only one choice to join me on this episode- the person who started this series with me, Jason from Binge Movies and The Slashers. This is probably the most obvious lineup we've had yet, but when you have movies like Fritz Lang's "Metropolis", John Carpenter's "They Live" and Paul Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers", you already have not just compelling films to watch, but a wealth of depth to cover. I hope you enjoy!

Today Matt, Todd, and would‑be companion Mike travel through spacetime and land in the Antarctic for the 6th serial of the 13th season of the classic BBC series Doctor Who.“Seeds of Doom” originally aired from January 31 to March 6, 1976, and if you're a fan of John Carpenter's The Thing, Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World, or classic sci‑fi horror in general, you're going to feel right at home. This is one of the earliest and most effective examples of British TV doing icy paranoia and creeping body‑horror on a shoestring.Even if you only know Doctor Who from its 21st‑century resurgence starting with Christopher Eccleston, this story is anchored by perhaps the most iconic Doctor of all time: Tom Baker. His mix of alien aloofness and manic energy are as legend as his scarf is iconic. The adventure begins at a remote Antarctic research base where a mysterious seed pod is unearthed; one that quickly draws the attention of Harrison Chase, a criminally unhinged botanist / eco‑terrorist / millionaire played with comic‑villain perfection by Tony Beckley. And every great villain needs a henchman: John Challis delivers a Whit BIssell-winning performance clean sweep as Scorby; a man who looks like he was born to menace people in cold climates.Whether you're a longtime fan, a newcomer, or just someone who loves classic sci‑fi horror with a dash of British eccentricity, Seeds of Doom is one of the high points of the Tom Baker era. It's atmospheric, creepy, funny, and surprisingly intense, definitely one of our highest recommendations.

"Am I hallucinating *all* of this? You tell me it's all a dream." We get to the ultra-disco noir fever dream Eyes of Laura Mars with our resident Faye Dunaway expert and friend, Garrett Mitchell, this week. It's been a while since we've covered Miss Dunaway on the podcast, but she's truly one of the most iconic leading ladies of the 1970s, that all peaked with Irvin Kershner's thriller set in the backdrop of a gritty NYC in the fashion world. This movie might not be along the lines of 70s classics, but we're here to say it's a heck of a ride. With a story by John Carpenter and produced by Jon Peters, who bought the story with the idea of it being a star vehicle for his then-girlfriend Barbra Streisand at the time before it went to Dunaway, the film follows Laura Mars,  a fierce fashion photographer, as she develops an ability to see through the eyes of a killer. We talk about Faye's insane levels on display, René Auberjonois as some fun queer representation, Tommy Lee Jones's unibrow, and a secretly sexy Brad Dourif.   Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna Cover Art by Shaun Piela

"Nobody... nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired.”Producer/writer Josh Hyams joins hosts Andy Nelson and Pete Wright to discuss The Thing, directed by John Carpenter. When it opened in June 1982, audiences weren't ready for it—it bombed against E.T. and was widely dismissed, even as its atmosphere of paranoia played out on screen. Decades later it's considered a landmark of practical effects filmmaking and one of the great ensemble horror films ever made. Hyams—whose BAFTA-nominated Mr. Burton is now in US release—has loved this film since seeing it at an outdoor cinema in Greece as a child. He brings a filmmaker's eye to Rob Bottin's creature work, Morricone's bare and atmospheric score, and a film that, as he puts it, "draws you in, it doesn't patronize you—it is a grown-up, cerebral, well-told horror film that takes its time." Forty years on, it's earned every word of that.

Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, and Laurie Zimmer star as a small group of strangers trapped inside a nearly abandoned Los Angeles police station as relentless gang members lay siege to the building. With dwindling ammunition, shifting alliances, and nowhere to run, the film becomes a tense battle for survival that helped define Carpenter's minimalist style and pulsing synth score. With its claustrophobic setting, morally grey anti-heroes, and slow-burn suspense, the film raises intriguing questions about loyalty, survival, and what happens when the thin line between law and outlaw disappears. Is Precinct 13 a safe haven… or just a waiting room for the inevitable shootout? The movie was produced by Warner Bros. Television and aired on NBC on November 29, 1978. In this episode, Henrique and Rachael get into why the movie works so well as a pre-Halloween Carpenter thriller, how it builds suspense out of invasive attention and helplessness, and why its made-for-TV roots actually sharpen the tension instead of softening it. They talk about Lauren Hutton's strong lead performance, Adrienne Barbeau's memorable supporting turn, the movie's stalking setup, its uneasy humor, and the way it taps into fears about privacy, vulnerability, and not being believed. They also explore why this one deserves a much bigger reputation among fans of 1970s horror, psychological thrillers, and John Carpenter deep cuts.Inside this episode:why Someone's Watching Me! feels like a missing link between Carpenter's early work and Halloweenhow the film turns phone harassment, surveillance, and apartment living into effective horrorwhy Lauren Hutton makes such a compelling leadthe importance of Adrienne Barbeau's Sophie and the film's unusually progressive character dynamics for 1978why the movie's TV-thriller format gives it a different but very effective rhythmhow Carpenter creates tension without needing nonstop violence or spectacleFilm details:Year: 1978Director: John CarpenterStarring: Lauren Hutton, David Birney, Adrienne BarbeauRuntime: 97 minutes  Where to watch (U.S., this week):Hoopla and available to rent or buy on Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

This week, Shat The Movies puts on the sunglasses and uncovers John Carpenter's They Live, the cult classic that turns Reagan-era paranoia into a full-blown alien conspiracy. Starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as a drifter who discovers the world is secretly controlled by skull-faced elites, this 1988 sci-fi satire pulls no punches—and barely bothers with subtlety. Gene and Big D dig into Carpenter's blunt-force messaging, Piper's surprisingly effective everyman performance, and the film's legendary alley fight that somehow goes on forever—and still works. Along the way, they debate whether They Live is brilliant social commentary or just an excuse to say "OBEY" as loudly as possible, break down the movie's anti-consumerist rage, and revisit one of the most iconic uses of sunglasses in film history.
