"Can I please get another glass of Chardonnay please?" We're back on our horror icon Michael Myers this week as we look back at Halloween: H20. Released for the 20th anniversary of John Carpenter's original summer of 1998, it was an early capitalizer of nostalgia culture, this time scrapping 4, 5, and 6 (The Thorn Trilogy) in favor of a more streamlined story. Jamie Lee Curtis is back playing Laurie Strode, after a seventeen-year hiatus. Laurie is in hidding after faking her own death after the events of Halloween II, and is the head mistress of a excluvie west coast boarding school. It's the type of soap oprea backstory we love, and the Spanish style board school gives it an odd flavor that all of the movies don't have. The end result is a short and sweet little 90s post-Scream slasher. Seriously, with credits, this movie runs a brisk 86 minutes, that includes the ten-minute prologue before the credits. When JLC appears on screen, there are under seventy minutes left! We talk about Kevin Williamson's uncredited rewrite, its very WB-friendly cast, and don't worry, we talk extensively about Josh Harnett's goat-crewed bangs. The hair deserves its own Wikipedia page at this point. H20 is hardly a perfect movie, but we stand by that it has aged better than most of the sequels, including the recent David Gordon Green movies. It's Halloween, everyone is entitled to one good scare! The Films of John Carpenter
Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! In this time traveling episode of Second Breakfast, we're finally tackling the godfather of the slasher genre, John Carpenter's Halloween. We start with a simple question: why is this the best slasher movie? The answer involves gestural structure and a paradoxical approach to pacing. We also get into a spirited debate about the mysterious motive of our beloved Michael Myers. Is he supernatural? Are his crimes random? What roles do sexuality and cultural puritanism play in this story? Finally, we revisit some of the best analysis of the film that we've done over the past five (!) years. “You see, Jason was my son, and today is his birthday.” We're back talking about an iconic 80s slasher for October, or shall we say our favorite slasher mother! We broke out our Friday the 13th box set and watched the original 1980 movie. Released on the coat tails of John Carpenter's Halloween to capitalize on the masked psycho killer craze. Made for a slim budget of $550,000, but becoming a sleeper hit and eventual genre touchstone of the decade. We talk about the classic slasher elements its writer, Victor Miller, and director, Sean S. Cunningham, put in their “rip-off” of Halloween. We add some of our favorite Friday hunks to the list. We see you, Peter, in your cut-offs and neck handkerchief! But more importantly, we give Betsy Palmer her flowers for her iconic performance as Mrs. Voorhees, the gag of all gags in horror movies. Or should you skip it and go straight to the Masters of Horror series? Let's find out...GORE Podcast is a Horror podcast to keep you up at night. The filmmaker John Carpenter has a whole shelf of cult classics: “They Live,” “The Thing,” “Escape from New York,” “Halloween,” and so many more. And while he hasn't directed a new movie in more than a decade, Carpenter has continued working in the film industry, composing scores for other directors (Bong Joon Ho recently approached him about a horror movie). He has also released albums of cinematic music—no film required—often working with his son, Cody Carpenter, and the musician Daniel Davies, his godson. The New Yorker Radio Hour producer Adam Howard talks with Carpenter ahead of the launch of his new small tour, just in time for Halloween, and they discuss the unusual shift he made from directing to composing. “It's a transition from pain to joy. Directing movies is very, very stressful,” Carpenter explains. “Playing music in front of a live audience—it's joy. It's just joy.” Carpenter suggests three inspirational scores from film history: Bebe and Louis Barron's electronic music for “Forbidden Planet”; Bernard Herrmann work on Hitchcock's “Vertigo”; and Hans Zimmer's music for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.”
Lock your doors and grab your popcorn — The Popcorn Priest dives into the one that started it all: Halloween (1978). Send us a textThe first part of our HUGtober season of Halloween podcasts is here, and this week, we look back at what many would consider to be John Carpenter's most underrated movie - 1994's, In the Mouth of Madness. This wild and utterly compelling combination of Lovecraftian themes and Stephen King-stye storytelling makes for a wonderfully unique, and in many respects, truly unforgettable horror classic. Does it belong amongst Carpenter's finest work though? Is this his last genuinely great film, and why oh why had Liam not seen this before covering it for the podcast? These questions and many more and answered via the link the link in the bio.

Welcome to Los Angeles in 1976, setting for John Carpenter's Assault On Precinct 13, a tale of bad gangs, good guys, and a tragically mishandled ice cream order. This is America and Hollywood as we remember it growing up - a scary, magnetic clash of morals and modernity. And also lots of shooting. Join us for an anthology of 3 tales from the legend John Carpenter involving 3 cadavers in body bags!
Anthology October continues with another set of stories that have us wondering if the main nerd could actually get it. Are you a bourbon in the parking lot with Wes kind of folk or a game of billiards with a werewolf sort? Do you like your hair from a can or wriggling in the back of your throat? Do you prefer Luke Skywalker with blue eyes or his brown eye? Cigarette math, the Tom Bosley hair club for men (of which we are presidents somehow) and almost Mark Hamill's butthole. It's John Carpenter's Body Bags, this time on Doom Generation!
Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Event Horizon, Dead Calm) stars as John Trent who is an insurance investigator tasked with finding a reknowned horror writer named Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow) who has apparently disappeared....and just as his latest best-selling novel named "In the Mouth of Madness" has hit bookshelves all over the world. Also causing concern is a growing number of readers of this book who have suddenly gone violently mad. So John embarks on this fact-finding mission with a book editor named Linda Styles (Julie Carmen) and once they arrive at a mysterious town in New Hampshire where they suspect Sutter Cane might be hiding....let's just say that things start to go a bit....MAD. :o This supernatural horror thriller came out just over thirty years ago and was directed by the Master of Horror himself.....John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, Escape From New York) and it might even be one of his more underappreciated gems! The supporting cast also includes John Glover, Bernie Casey, David Warner, and Charlton Heston. For the month of October, the Criterion Channel will spotlight spooky films, including selections from the best horror of the 2000s to a collection of John Carpenter movies. Criterion curator Clyde Folley discusses scary movies, plus listeners share their favorite horror films of the 2000s.
Inclement weather is heading your way! We discover in this 689th edition of Have You Ever Seen that there are angry, dead mariners on a boat surrounded by fog...and they're out for revenge on the residents of a small coastal town 100 years later. Well-made though this film is, it's definitely lesser John Carpenter, coming out right in the middle of his brilliant Halloween/Escape/Thing run. His horror flick has its moments though and his cast is just fine, headlined by 3 Scream Queens: Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh and Adrienne Barbeau. So let's get the 10th Annual Scary Movie Month going with this sometimes tongue-in-cheek wagging of the tongue about The Fog. Subscribe to this podcast in your app. Write a review. A new dawn! A new day! A new Dark Star!Welcome to a brand new series on Redshirt Cinema Club, as we embark upon a vaguely Halloween-timed viewing of the early films of John Carpenter. There are so many reasons this run of films fits with what we've watched on the pod so far, not least the fact that several of these films are very good. We're starting this week with Carpenter's first film, Dark Star, co-created with eventual Alien writer Dan O'Bannon, and a teasing love letter to mid-century science fiction. Joe Begos is a renegade indie filmmaker and a household name in horror. His body of work includes Bliss, VFW, The Mind's Eye, Christmas Bloody Christmas, and his latest splatterfest Jimmy and Stiggs—which is easily one of my favorite horror films of the year. I love this movie, I love that it exists, and I love what it represents.Joe is one of the most adaptive and irrepressible filmmakers I've ever met—he's worked across multiple budget tiers and has delivered a consistent stream of bold and unique horror films throughout his career. What Joe has proven to me—film after film—is that there's no excuse not to make movies, and no excuse for them not to be good. Jimmy & Stiggs was shot entirely in his apartment, on a shoestring budget, and stars Joe himself. But despite its humble production origins, the film is propulsive, fun, fully unique, looks fantastic and was edited beautifully by former guest Josh Ethier. The film holds its own next to splatter classics like Evil Dead, Dead Alive, and Bad Taste, all while staying true to Joe's gonzo, neon-soaked style. In this conversation, Joe walks us through the insane 4 year journey of making Jimmy & Stiggs, his process, influences, alien creature design and the chain of events that led to Eli Roth picking up the film. He also offers his blunt, no-BS advice to emerging filmmakers.Key TakeawaysImitate before you InnovateJoe describes his early films, like Almost Human and The Mind's Eye, as exercises in emulating his inspirations like John Carpenter and Cronenberg. It wasn't until Bliss that he felt like he'd really found his voice, but to get there, he had to imitate the masters that came before him. Once he found his voice, he fully committed to making movies only he could make.Make movies only you can makeJoe has one of the most defined directorial signatures in horror today—every one of his films is instantly recognizable as his. This commitment to personal vision has allowed him to carve out a cinematic identity that stands apart from the increasingly homogenized landscape of genre filmmaking. Developing a body of work that is unmistakably your own is a high watermark for any filmmaker and a path to building a sustainable, meaningful career.Make your fucking movieIf you look at Joe's career, one thing is clear—he does not stop making movies. Jimmy & Stiggs was born during COVID, between greenlit projects, when the industry was on pause. Instead of waiting around, Joe did the classic indie move: he took inventory of what he had access to—his apartment, a camera, a few close collaborators—and made a movie, casting himself in the lead.Joe's irrepressibility is something to study. He seems physically incapable of not making movies—and he'll sacrifice his apartment, personal finances, and whatever else it takes to get the job done. This is the kind of relentless drive that indie filmmaking demands. Joe is also well aware of how the system works. Agents often discourage small projects because there's no commission in it for them. But Bliss and Jimmy & Stiggs—two of his lowest-budget films—were made outside of that system, on his own terms, and ended up being some his most talked-about work. For filmmakers being told to wait their turn, Joe's message is simple: don't. Make your fucking movie. Even if it sucks, it's better than having no movie at all.Jimmy & Stiggs is now streaming on VOD. Show NotesMovies:BlissVFWChristmas Bloody ChristmasThe Mind's EyeAlmost HumanJimmy & StiggsEvil...
John Carpenter's groundbreaking reimagining of the 1951 sci-fi horror classic The Thing From Another World about a group of researchers in Antarctica who are terrorized by a shapeshifting beast. Starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, T.K. Carter and Richard Masur.
This week, we (Dave, Evan, and Megan) discuss documentary ARE WE GOOD? (2:34), which follows comedian Marc Maron (and directed by Steven Feinartz) as he prepares for his comedy special, podcasts, and deals with grief after the death of his partner, filmmaker Lynn Shelton. We all like Maron, who's a captivating subject, and appreciate his discussion of grief. But we had issues with the chaotic editing and didn't really learn anything new about him. Then we all talk about GOOD BOY (28:22), Ben Leonburg's unique supernatural horror film told from a dog's point of view. Indy the dog accompanies his human companion to a remote house in the woods that happens to be haunted. But only Indy seems to see the danger. It's a great film that's emotional and well made, especially the sound design, cinematography, and Indy's charismatic performance. And over on our Patreon bonus episode, we cover John Carpenter's supernatural horror film, THE FOG, starring Adrienne Barbeau and Jamie Lee Curtis, for its 45th anniversary!
This week we're heading to the desolate, frozen landscape of Antarctica for John Carpenter's claustrophobic and paranoia-fueled 1982 masterpiece, The Thing! We'll be discussing the terrifying, shape-shifting alien, the incredible practical effects, and the nail-biting suspense as R.J. MacReady and his team try to figure out who—or what—among them is the impostor. Who can you trust when the threat is... well, anything? And to keep us warm while we try to survive the night, we're mixing up a classic that cuts straight to the point: the Rusty Nail, featuring J&B Scotch Whisky. This smoky, sweet, and potent two-ingredient cocktail is a perfect match for a film that is as sharp and uncompromising as a blast of MacReady's flamethrower. So grab your glass, keep your blood handy, and get ready to raise a toast to The Thing!Merch ShopPatreonInstagramBlueskyFacebookhttps://www.drinkthemovies.comYouTubeDiscord*Please Drink Responsibly*
