Inclement weather is heading your way! We discover in this 689th edition of Have You Ever Seen that there are angry, dead mariners on a boat surrounded by fog...and they're out for revenge on the residents of a small coastal town 100 years later. Well-made though this film is, it's definitely lesser John Carpenter, coming out right in the middle of his brilliant Halloween/Escape/Thing run. His horror flick has its moments though and his cast is just fine, headlined by 3 Scream Queens: Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh and Adrienne Barbeau. Joe Begos is a renegade indie filmmaker and a household name in horror. His body of work includes Bliss, VFW, The Mind's Eye, Christmas Bloody Christmas, and his latest splatterfest Jimmy and Stiggs—which is easily one of my favorite horror films of the year. I love this movie, I love that it exists, and I love what it represents.Joe is one of the most adaptive and irrepressible filmmakers I've ever met—he's worked across multiple budget tiers and has delivered a consistent stream of bold and unique horror films throughout his career. What Joe has proven to me—film after film—is that there's no excuse not to make movies, and no excuse for them not to be good. Jimmy & Stiggs was shot entirely in his apartment, on a shoestring budget, and stars Joe himself. But despite its humble production origins, the film is propulsive, fun, fully unique, looks fantastic and was edited beautifully by former guest Josh Ethier. The film holds its own next to splatter classics like Evil Dead, Dead Alive, and Bad Taste, all while staying true to Joe's gonzo, neon-soaked style. In this conversation, Joe walks us through the insane 4 year journey of making Jimmy & Stiggs, his process, influences, alien creature design and the chain of events that led to Eli Roth picking up the film. He also offers his blunt, no-BS advice to emerging filmmakers.Key TakeawaysImitate before you InnovateJoe describes his early films, like Almost Human and The Mind's Eye, as exercises in emulating his inspirations like John Carpenter and Cronenberg. It wasn't until Bliss that he felt like he'd really found his voice, but to get there, he had to imitate the masters that came before him. Once he found his voice, he fully committed to making movies only he could make.Make movies only you can makeJoe has one of the most defined directorial signatures in horror today—every one of his films is instantly recognizable as his. This commitment to personal vision has allowed him to carve out a cinematic identity that stands apart from the increasingly homogenized landscape of genre filmmaking. Developing a body of work that is unmistakably your own is a high watermark for any filmmaker and a path to building a sustainable, meaningful career.Make your fucking movieIf you look at Joe's career, one thing is clear—he does not stop making movies. Jimmy & Stiggs was born during COVID, between greenlit projects, when the industry was on pause. Instead of waiting around, Joe did the classic indie move: he took inventory of what he had access to—his apartment, a camera, a few close collaborators—and made a movie, casting himself in the lead.Joe's irrepressibility is something to study. He seems physically incapable of not making movies—and he'll sacrifice his apartment, personal finances, and whatever else it takes to get the job done. This is the kind of relentless drive that indie filmmaking demands. Joe is also well aware of how the system works. Agents often discourage small projects because there's no commission in it for them. But Bliss and Jimmy & Stiggs—two of his lowest-budget films—were made outside of that system, on his own terms, and ended up being some his most talked-about work. For filmmakers being told to wait their turn, Joe's message is simple: don't. Make your fucking movie. Even if it sucks, it's better than having no movie at all.Jimmy & Stiggs is now streaming on VOD. Show NotesMovies:BlissVFWChristmas Bloody ChristmasThe Mind's EyeAlmost HumanJimmy & StiggsEvil...

We do not talk about Jeremy Irons enough on this show. He is an actor's actor who we do not see in genre often. His involvement in the remake of a 1980s cult classic changes that and has us excited. We also revisit our conversation about how comedians have positively affected horror. Plus, bad pedophiles vs good ones.We like when PR companies go the extra mile and the marketing for Bone Lake has been inspired. From suggestively placing the R rating to some cool posters, the film's promotion has been eye-catching. The over the top opening adds to this with lots of nudity and a gruesome kill. When it turns things down, it is to an almost shocking degree that may cause people to turn out. Which is a shame, since Bone Lake becomes an excellent psychological thriller that does an excellent job of toying with audience expectations. It also boasts one of the strongest performances of the year.Since returning in 2021, the V/H/S series has put out some great releases. They have taken things to he past along with trying out new things like sci-fi horror. This year the franchise tackles something that John Carpenter was never able to do. V/H/S Halloween sees the found footage anthology turn its eye towards a particular holiday in October. There have been some fun segments, but this is the most fun V/H/S has been as an overall product in years. It perfectly captures the Halloween spirit and presents stories that range from scary to funny. And all of them are gross. This is one of the movies that will become a regular tradition. But there is a major caveat. V/H/S Halloween also has the darkest segment in the history of the franchise. It will be a polarizing watch that many people may skip. Others will think it is great extreme horror. One thing is for sure; the segment is one of the best seen in the V/H/S series, but it feels out of place in this year's edition. In the origin story of Michael Myers, the slasher killer from the legendary Halloween series of horror films, young Michael sees his sister….. Wait, what? Oh, this is Dennis the Menace? In which a little slingshot punk from the 1950s rides around on a tricycle in 1993 and torments an innocent old man? And you're telling me it's not about Michael Myers, it was just directed by the man who originally played Michael Myers in John Carpenter's Halloween (Nick “The Shape” Castle)? Gotcha. I see where the confusion started. As most of us are preparing for the most wonderful time of the year (the Jack-o'-lantern one…not the Bells and Holly one), Spill Your Guts is taking this episode to the day of romance and cupid and dead flowers wrapped up nicely. And there is no horror film more associated with Valentine's Day than “My Bloody Valentine”. This 1981 classic has become seminal title in the pantheon of horror and did for Valentine's Day what John Carpenter's enduring masterpiece “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th” did for the respective dates. My Bloody Valentine has endured the test of time and become regular viewing every Valentine's Day for horror fans. It's also Quentin Tarantino's favorite slasher film. High praise…and well deserved. However, the film faced more than its share of challenges in both production and release and was considered a flop (if it was considered at all). There's a long and compelling story to how “My Bloody Valentine” became the classic it is today with action figures, comics, a novel adaptation and even a board game. Joining me to delve into the film as well as his career as a real journeyman filmmaker is My Bloody Valentine's masterful director, George Mihalka. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Awakened from its icy slumber, our latest Spooktoberfest begins with John Carpenter's 1982 cult classic The Thing. At a research base in Antarctica, twelve men are preparing for a long winter when things take an unexpected turn. An alien creature enters their midst in the form of a dog, but they soon discover that this entity can mimic the appearance and behavior of any living thing. Paranoia sets in as the group desperately tries to determine who among them is the murderous alien. R.J. MacReady, the camp's helicopter pilot, attempts to lead the other men through this bizarre ordeal before it claims more lives. But as the Thing grows smarter and the group splinters apart, MacReady's focus shifts from staying alive to winning at any cost. Roxy Striar & Tara Erickson dive into the cult-favorite slasher sequel Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), the sixth installment in John Carpenter's legendary Halloween franchise. Directed by Joe Chappelle, the film continues the terrifying saga of Michael Myers, now tied to the mysterious Cult of Thorn mythology. Picking up years after the events of Halloween 5, Michael stalks the Strodes once again, and this time the evil feels darker, stranger, and bloodier than ever. The film stars Donald Pleasence (Halloween, You Only Live Twice) in his final appearance as the iconic Dr. Sam Loomis, determined to stop Michael at any cost. Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, Clueless) in one of his earliest roles plays Tommy Doyle, the grown-up survivor from the original Halloween, now obsessed with uncovering Michael's secrets. Marianne Hagan (Stake Land) portrays Kara Strode, cousin to Laurie Strode, who becomes entangled in Michael's reign of terror along with her young son Danny (Devin Gardner). George P. Wilbur reprises his role as Michael Myers, embodying the unstoppable masked killer once more. Famous and highly discussed moments from the film include the shocking hospital massacre sequence, the eerie reveal of the Cult of Thorn, and the tense showdown between Tommy Doyle and Michael using runic symbols to subdue the Boogeyman. Fans still debate the differences between the Theatrical Cut and the infamous Producer's Cut, with alternate endings and deeper cult mythology making this one of the most dissected entries in the Halloween franchise. We've been doing Spill Your Guts for over 80 episodes now, and I can safely say that this is going to be some of our best. We are also doing a literary series with the biggest authors in horror fiction. It's a very exciting time for horror readers, as there are so many brilliant and diverse authors out there, creating stories that are reshaping the genre and what we've come to expect. This episode features one such author. Christopher Golden is a New York Times bestselling author and Bram Stoker Award winner, and he's become a household name in horror fiction with masterfully written novels such as "Snowblind", "Ararat", "Road of Bones", "All Hallows", and "The Nightbirds", to name a few.His work moves like a runaway train of terror and atmosphere that has caused me to read most of them in one sitting. There are few authors working that can compete with Christopher in creating the pace and atmosphere that he does. We also discuss his new anthology book, which he co-edited with Brian Keene, based in the world of Stephen King's iconic "The Stand", of which King himself gave the book his blessing. It's a must-have book for King fans, and really anyone who loves horror. It features stories from a long list of the greatest writers working in the genre today. The book is called "The End of the World as we know it", and is available now. So let's explore the worlds of frosty ghosts, spectral savage wolves, the true darkness of Halloween, and the scariest witches I have ever encountered in the history of horror. The German minimal DJ returns to the spotlight with two hours of artfully subtle house and techno. There's an old German proverb that goes "Der stete Tropfen höhlt den Stein." Literally, it means a constant dripping wears away the stone, but the point isn't about force but patience: slow, steady repetition can leave the deepest mark. It's an apt metaphor for the career of Kosta Athanassiadis, better known as XDB. Active since the early '90s, first as a DJ and then producer by the decade's end, Athanassiadis has built a career less on hype than persistence. His catalogue spans labels like Dial, Metrolux and Echocord, alongside a steady trickle of EPs and remixes that have quietly cemented his reputation as one of minimal house and techno's undersung heroes. That patience carries into his sound and production ethos. Where many of his peers embraced software upgrades and new workflows, Athanassiadis has long stuck to Cubase, a handful of trusty instruments and 30-year-old speakers he claims to have run "hundreds of thousands of tunes" through. He also still prefers to use inexpensive, straightforward gear—what matters, he insists, is not the tools but the feel. The result is a sound that's stripped back, direct and enduring. Lately, Athanassiadis has found himself back in focus. With minimal enjoying fresh attention, his calendar has filled, and with it a run of back-to-back sets—most often alongside PLO Man, a regular sparring partner this year. True to form, though, you won't find that his style has changed much. Over 30 years after his first gig, you can rest assured you'll still find him playing with patience, carving out long arcs rather than sharp peaks. His RA Mix captures him in a reflective mood. Running just over two hours, RA.1003 is a hushed yet absorbing affair, moving seamlessly from the delicate atmospherics of Valentino Mora and Caldera to the machine funk of Robert Hood, Solid Gold Playaz and Marcellus Pittman. There are left turns folded into XDB's patient narrative arc, too: John Carpenter's brooding scores here, DJ Sprinkles' melancholic work with Will Long on "Acid Trax N (Acid Dog)" there. It's the sound of a DJ who has been quietly chiseling away for three decades, and who understands the value of persistence as much as restraint. @xdb Find the tracklist and interview at ra.co/podcast/1021

THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. Content warning: since Spread Me is erotic horror, this episode has an explicit tag. I wrote it to have fun because I have written a lot of books that were not fun to write... -Sarah Gailey In this episode, we welcome Hugo winning author Sarah Gailey, author of Spread Me, as we explore the wild world of erotic horror. Sarah shares their journey of writing a novel that takes inspiration from John Carpenter's classic film, The Thing, blending horror and erotica and humor. We dive into the creative process behind Spread Me, discussing the unique premise of a research crew encountering a specimen with prurient interests, and how the protagonist's unusual attraction to viruses plays into the narrative. (viruses!) Sarah candidly reflects on the challenges of writing explicit content and the journey of finding the perfect title that captures the essence of their work. And we get Sarah's meticulous approach to outlining and how specificity in description enhances storytelling.  Then we fight book bans! It's a magical time.
