It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode.

Odd as it may seem today, there was a time when sequels were considered inferior rip-offs by studios and critics alike. A desperate ploy at milking the success of likely superior original film. Rarely was a sequel directed by the film's original director (of course there are many notable exceptions such as Evil Dead 2, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Dawn of the Dead) with the filmmakers having concern that there wasn't artistic value in returning to the well or that the studio execs would see them as one and done type creatives. And yet, that didn't stop many of the genres most successful franchises from soldiering on. Jason, Freddy, Chucky, Pinhead… to name a few. All continued on with involvement from their creators at some level. One of the most resilient has been the Halloween franchise. The first sequel was written and produced by the creators of the original, John Carpenter and Debra Hill and directed by relative newcomer Rick Rosenthal. The film also saw the return of stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence and continued directly where the first film left off as Michael Myers' continued his night of terror. The film was a success and Carpenter and Hill were asked to come up with a third. So, having seemingly killed off both Myers and Loomis in the previous film, they decided to try something different and create a completely new story with new characters set on Halloween. The idea being that if this model worked, you'd have a formula for an anthology Halloween horror film you could release every couple of years.  It didn't. The fans were puzzled and pissed at the absence of beloved villain Michael Myers and the movie soon became persona non grata with fans. That would change over the years as the film, titled Halloween 3: Season of the Witch and well directed by Carpenter pal Tommy Lee Wallace and staring genre greats Tom Atkins and Dan O'Herlihy, would go on to become a fan favorite. Long live Silver Shamrock. A few years later, undeterred executive producer of the series Moustapha Akkad felt that it was time to bring Michael back. Carpenter and Hill had moved on and stepped away from the series. Who was going to bring back the Shape for another terror filled night of treat or treating? Enter Dwight Little. Having directed 3 action-adventure films prior to signing on to do Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Little didn't necessarily seem like the obvious choice. However, one thing anyone could see by looking at his first three films was a strong eye for big set pieces and a deft way with suspense. Halloween 4 also sees the return of Donald Pleasence as Doctor Loomis and Little and writer Allan B. McElroy give this genre legend more to do here than in previous films. It's a smart move and Pleasence gives a knockout performance. Halloween 4 has a strong cast all around with Danielle Harris beginning her career as a Scream Queen playing the 7-year-old Jamie Lloyd, Ellie Cornell in a relatable and strong protector roll (an underrated contribution in many ways) as Rachel Carruthers, Jamie's step-sister and great supporting cast including Beau Starr as Sheriff Ben Meeker and veteran character actor Michael Pataki as Doctor Hoffman. Dwight Little found just the right balance of the controlled and deliberate tone of Carpenter's original film and his own sensibilities as a filmmaker. Cutting down on the gore of Halloween 2 (which was really there as response to the popularity of the “Friday the 13th” films and doesn't quite fit the Halloween series) and playing up the tension, “Halloween 4” also captures the spirit of Halloween itself. The opening montage of fall imagery rooting the film firmly in the season in a way few of the many oncoming sequels would recapture. “Halloween 4” is not only the best of the Halloween sequels, it's a testament to Dwight Little's skill as a filmmaker that the film has become a traditional selection in many genre fans seasonal film playlist. Dwight has gone on to direct plenty more films and television series in the genre including the vastly underrated 1989 version of “Phantom of the Opera” starring Robert Englund (no points for guessing which role he plays), the extremely fun and well directed “Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid”, “the X-Files” and the brilliant “Millennium” (for which he did one of its best episodes, a Christmas episode featuring Darren McGavin as the father of Frank Black, series lead Lance Henriksen) and “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series”. All of this on top of an extremely successful career as an action film director, of which he's made many greats! Dwight and Kevin talk on the high jinks of shooting a crazy movie like his early action adventure film “Bloodstone, why he approached Halloween 4 as though it were a detective movie, working with the late legend Donald Pleasence, getting around Andrew Lloyd Webber while making his version of “Phantom” and his new horror film “Natty Knocks” which has him reuniting with both Danielle Harris and Robert Englund. In 1988 he changed the face of Halloween. Tonight, he's back. Spill Your Guts is proud to present, a conversation with director Dwight Little. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Happy Halloween! It's officially spooky season and with that, the end of David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy. If you're even here, then you probably already know just how polarizing this film has been for horror fans alike. Nevertheless, Amber and Mike discuss their thoughts on this final battle between good and evil, a battle that has lasted in several forms for the last 44 years. Also, this is our 44th episode... coincidence? In commemoration of what will likely be our last episode on the Halloween franchise (at least until another reboot), we would like to dedicate this episode to Donald Pleasence, Debra Hill and Moustapha Akkad. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This October marks the return of Catching Up Cinema's annual, “Kyle's Killer October” month! All month long, Kyle will be taking creative control of the program, with this year's theme being an exploration of the filmography of Rob Zombie! This week, we review Rob Zombie's remake of John Carpenter's original, Halloween (2007)! Produced in the wake of the poorly regarded Halloween: Resurrection (2002), as well as the untimely death of lead producer on the franchise, Moustapha Akkad, Halloween 2007 was to serve as both a new beginning for the franchise, and a radical tonal/textural departure from earlier Michael Myers films. Produced by Moustapha Akkad's son, Malek, after numerous failed attempts to greenlight crossover Halloween projects in the hopes of aping the success of the earlier Freddy vs. Jason (2003), Rob Zombie was approached to both write and direct Halloween 2007, essentially being given carte blanche in all areas of production. Half prequel, and half remake of John Carpenter's 1978 original, Zombie's Halloween bears many of the director's trademarks, e.g. vulgar dialogue, a grungy pseudo-70's aesthetic, and a cast populated with a who's who of grindhouse cinema character actors, however it's debatable how much of them are a good fit for the world of Michael Myers. Mean-spirited and brutal in ways that many “mascot” slasher films are not, Halloween 2007 is wildly effective in eliciting an emotional response from the viewer, however in the case of this reviewer, said emotions detract from rather than enhance the experience. Halloween 2007 boldly attempts to fill in many blanks in the backstory of Michael Myers that may or may not be best left unfilled, presenting a prologue segment that doesn't necessarily explain Myers' psychopathy, though it does seem to point to his prolonged incarceration as perhaps being responsible for exacerbating it. A highly divisive entry in the franchise, Halloween 2007 is perhaps best regarded as “Rob Zombies' Halloween,” as it fits cleanly into the director's oeuvre, which by its very nature, classifies the film as one that will only appeal to a very specific niche audience. Following the buzz around his first film “Assault on Precinct 13,” director John Carpenter was sought out by a pair of producers named Irwin Yablans and Moustapha Akkad to make a movie about a psychotic killer who stalked babysitters. Carpenter agreed to do the project so long as he had complete creative control over the film. He then got to work on the script with his girlfriend Debra Hill with the original title of the film as “The Babysitter Murders.” The script reportedly took only a couple of weeks to complete with Carpenter and Hill working in tandem on the story and the dialogue. Once finished, it was the producers who mentioned the possibility of releasing the film around Halloween and with that suggested the title of the movie should change as well. Shot on a shoestring budget of just $300,000, Carpenter's unique approach to several different shots including the iconic point-of-view from the killer have been praised by other directors for more than 40 years. Carpenter also managed to compose the entire score himself, which included arguably the most iconic horror theme of all time. The film absolutely terrified audiences as a faceless psychopath named Michael Myers stalked his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois and killed any and every babysitter that stood in his path…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to put on our William Shatner masks and sharpen up our kitchen knives as we discuss the iconic 1978 film “Halloween”…Follow the hosts: Damon Martin @DamonMartinPatrick Guera @DirectorPatrickEmail us questions at: ROTLivingDead@gmail.com

Most long-running horror franchises have that one installment which was legitimately supposed to, but ultimately, did not end the franchise. Some have several of them. In Hollywood, producers (and sometimes audiences) will quickly voice their disgust if you ever dare leave money on the table. Not that anyone knew that in 1981. Instead, all Moustapha Akkad, Irwin Yablans, John Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted to do was to make a little more money off of the slasher gold rush they’d inadvertently started in 1978, and then bow out. Doing so, though, meant making some controversial story decisions with rotating directors and final edits. The resulting sequel they produced is inferior to the original, but Tim Williams and guest co-host, Ron West, still return to Haddonfield, Illinois to find "the Shape", also known as Michael Myers, as we discuss “Halloween II”. Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover on this episode: One common criticism is that the hospital is too conveniently dead, even for a night shift, for Michael to be able to walk around unnoticed and kill the hospital staff. Rick Rosenthal said he based this off a personal experience he had with his wife where they once attended a hospital late at night and it was completely deserted, save for a few doctors and nurses and the patients. Additionally early dialogue and the script refers to it as "Haddonfield clinic" not a fully staffed hospital. According to the original script there was a scene depicting the blonde reporters death, her car breaks down on the side of the road with her getting assistance from a guy who hits on her, with her responding in disgust, the truck driver then leaves her, after the tire is replaced she opens the trunk to Myers who then kills her and takes the car, as a nod to what he did in the first film. "Charles Bronson will find the silver lining in a double rape/murder." The Goat and Cory G return to watch the insanely harsh and violent Death Wish 2. Off topic tangents include bathrobes vs pajamas, wisdom teeth surgeries and how much Moustapha Akkad loves Michael Myers. So sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

This week, we celebrate our 40th episode by celebrating the 40th anniversary of HALLOWEEN. Join us as we break format to review all eleven (!!!) movies in the HALLOWEEN franchise in one mega-episode, including the latest HALLOWEEN, now playing in theaters. We'll try to solve all the franchise's mysteries, including: What happens in the first ten Halloween movies? Who is Moustapha Akkad? What's the secret to defeating Michael Myers? Why won't Michael stay dead? In which movie does Michael wear the ugliest mask? Is Rob Zombie a psychopath? And finally... is watching every Halloween movie ever made a worthwhile pursuit?
