Visiting a shopping centre on a Saturday is such a familiar thing to do. The horrific attack at Westfield Bondi Junction has understandably shocked many. And given heightened community tensions – there were fears over what might have motivated such an attack. The NSW police commissioner was last night confident enough to say she did not believe this was an act of terrorism. David Speers interviews Treasurer Jim Chalmers about the latest, as well as getting his take on Iran's attack on Israel and the government's new Future Made in Australia act.The panel John Kehoe, Anna Henderson, and David Crowe also turn their minds to the government's new Future Made in Australia Act. The Prime Minister wants to see a new wave of local manufacturing – powered by clean energy. And to get there – he's willing to seriously ramp up government subsidies and incentives. How much taxpayers' money will be spent? And who will be the winners? Also discussed is Penny Wong's speech on the possibility of Palestinian statehood before a two state solution. 150 years later, there are still unknowns surrounding the "Molly Maguires" in Pennsylvania

Smart Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2024 22:15

With St. Patrick's Day coming up on Sunday, you'll be hearing a lot of stories about the Irish and many will be celebrating their Irish heritage. One of the most infamous periods in American history, and certainly here in Pennsylvania, involved the Molly Maguires. The Molly Maguires were a secret organization of Irish coal miners in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania in the late 1800s. Assassinations and violence grew throughout the area because of poor working conditions in the mines and ethnic tensions, leading to 16 killings. The Molly Maguires were thought to be responsible, and 20 supposed members were executed. Kevin Kenny is author of the 1998 book Making Sense of the Molly Maguires and a Professor of History and the Glucksman Professor in Irish Studies at New York University. On The Spark Wednesday, Kenny was asked who the Molly Maguires were,"Nobody agreed at the time. Historians haven't agreed since. I would say we need to avoid, two extremes. One is that they were simply savages who killed people for the sake of killing people. Believe it or not, that's how they were described in the 19th century. The other is that they were simply innocent victims because 20 men were hanged. But there were 16 other dead bodies on the stage at the end, and somebody killed them." Working conditions and ethnic differences were two factors that led to violence, especially after coal miners unionized,"Underground and mining communities are always difficult and harsh. It's brutal work. People died of miners lung in those days and they still do. I can tell you that the fatality rates and mining accidents were three times as high in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania as they were in Europe. It's really difficult work. There's also a division based on class, on ethnicity, because most of the skilled miners and this was really an elite workforce who built the mines and then freed the coal from the coalface. Most of them were were British, English or Welsh. Most of them were Protestant. Some of the skilled miners were Irish, but most of the laborers were Irish. It's a very important distinction between being a laborer and a miner because it comes down to this. The skilled miner will come in, come into the mine underground in the morning. They will free the coal from from the coal face by using powder to explode it out of the coalface. Then they'll go home. The Irishman will stay down underground all day loading the coal into carts. It's a different kind of work. The union brought the two sides together. The Molly Maguires represents the marginalized and the exploited." Kenny described what happened,"There were two waves of violence attributed to the Molly Maguires. The first was in the 1860s, during the Civil War. It was a mixture of rudimentary labor organizing and opposition to the military draft to conscription in the same category as the New York City draft riots, which are more famous. Six people were killed in that violence. Nobody was convicted at the time. The second wave of violence was in the middle of the 1870s, and it directly followed the destruction of the labor union. The labor union went down to defeat in the middle of the worst national economic depression the country had ever seen, and the 1870s the labor union, the WBA, was crushed. Into the vacuum stepped the Molly Maguires. Six more killings took place in the summer of 1875. That's the context in which it unfolds. (The victims were affiliated with the coal companies or those perceived to be enemies of the miners). The killings in the 1860s were traced retroactively to the Molly Maguires and a mopping up operation. They got the big wigs Alexander Campbell out in Carbon County, Patrick Hassler in Northumberland County, and John Kehoe in Schuylkill County. That's the context. And the explanation is Franklin Gowans attempted to secure monopoly control over the production and distribution of anthracite in the lower region, and eliminating all obstacles in his path." The suspected Molly Maguires paid for their alleged crimes with their lives -- justly or not as Kenny explained,"The 20 men who were hanged. My sense is, some were guilty as charged. Some were possibly innocent as charged. Others were probably guilty of other, crimes. But my position is that there were Molly Maguires and they killed people. It's a historian's question to try and explain, to try and make sense of what happened. I will tell you that, John Kehoe was the alleged ringleader of the whole Molly McGuire thing. He was based on Schuylkill County. He was active in politics. He was a marked man, and he was convicted in 1877 of the very first Molly McGuire killing, which took place in 1862." Kehoe was pardoned posthumously by Pennsylvania Gov. Milton Shapp in 1979.    Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Deloitte research shows that smartphone use is ingrained in our daily lives. A total of 96% of respondents say they own a smartphone, up from 94% last year. Mobile phones are now the preferred device for browsing shopping websites, making online purchases, online searches, banking and playing games. The survey also found that about two-thirds of adults (67%) wish they spent less time on their devices. The 67% finding is up significantly from 51% a year ago, with 18-34-year-olds more likely than any other age group to think they are using their smartphones and other devices too much (82%). Women are also more likely to want to reduce time spent on their devices, with 74% expressing this view compared with 61% of men. A total of 98% of 18-75-year-olds use their smartphone every day, with more than a third doing so during mealtimes and 74% saying they do so as soon as they wake up, compared with 59% a year ago. The survey shows the percentage of people who check their phone at least 50 times a day remains at 36%, while the percentage who check theirs at least 100 times is also unchanged at 16%. Half of respondents (52%) say they tend to stay awake later than planned because they use their devices into the night. The number of people staying awake later than planned is up from 49% last year, and it's up from 62% to 69% among 18-24 year olds and from 64% to 68% among those aged 25-34. While the research shows the majority of people want to use their smartphones and other devices less, some wish they could do more with them when they do use them. Just over a third (34%) would like to replace their existing passport with one that is integrated into their smartphone and 33% would like their driving licence integrated. A total of 18% would like to use their smartphone to unlock their house and 17% to unlock their car. There has been an increase in the number of people who own wearables, such as smartwatches, (50% to 67%), and Smart TVs (66% to 71%) in the last twelve months. One in five respondents (20%) say they have an external security camera or video doorbell, up from 16% a year ago. More than half of respondents use their smartphone or smartwatch to make in-person mobile payments. Almost two in five (38%) of adults regularly do so, and 13% say they do so occasionally. Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the smartphone market. A total of 37% of adults say they own an Apple phone, and 38% own a Samsung phone. Apple remains the most popular brand among 18-34 year olds. Aside from price, battery life, storage capacity, and camera quality are the three most important features for consumers purchasing a smartphone. Commenting on the findings of the Deloitte Consumer Trends report, John Kehoe, partner, Consumer & Technology Business audit and assurance group, said: "These results reaffirm how important the smartphone is in our daily lives and show that it is likely to further consolidate its status as the most successful consumer device. While many people wish they could reduce the extensive amount of time they spend on their smartphones, it is clear that they are the preferred devices for everything from banking to online search, browsing, playing games and shopping. People are now increasingly using their phones to make in-person payments, and our survey shows many would also like to use them for identity identification, which is something that is likely to become possible in the future. The European Parliament and Council of the EU have already started to move towards the adoption of ID technology by reaching a final agreement on European Digital Identity Wallets, a move which is now subject to formal approval. If approved, the wallets will serve as a form of national ID card which could be used for both online and offline public and private services across the EU." Entertainment The survey included questions on entertainment. A total of 74% of respondents have access to video streaming services, with the average person havi...

Do you often struggle with negative thoughts? You find it hard to get outside of your own head while holding a career and being a mother.  You are supposed to be a strong leader, and others look up to you. These thoughts shouldn't be inside of your head. But it is, and it's okay because it's nothing you should be ashamed of. In this episode of Int-HER-rupt podcast, host Linda Yates welcomes Ama Hooks, a talented senior-level consultant with extensive experience in strategic planning, diversity and inclusion, and cultural change management. Ama shares her journey of personal growth and transformation, particularly in dealing with negative thoughts.  Linda is fascinated by the concept that our thoughts shape our reality and is eager to explore Ama's insights and experiences. Listen to this week's episode to help you overcome negative thinking. Ama's Personal Journey and the Power of Reprogramming the Subconscious Ama opens up about her five-year journey of self-reflection and reprogramming her own subconscious.  She emphasizes that our unconscious biases influence 80% to 85% of our decisions and thought patterns. Initially focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, Ama realized the need to confront her own negative thoughts and redefine her self-image as a mother, wife, and business owner. She started with writing and journaling, gradually expanding her knowledge through courses, and continues to embrace this journey of self-discovery. Negative Thoughts and Doubt Linda asks Ama to define negative thoughts, and Ama describes them as thoughts that doubt oneself, others, or a situation.  She explains the importance of differentiating between intuition and fear-based doubts. Ama believes that negative thoughts often stem from fear and insecurities.  Drawing from her upbringing in a single-parent household, Ama reflects on her experiences with financial insecurity and how it has influenced her decision-making process. The fear of scarcity and economic instability has consistently plagued her, causing her to doubt herself and limit her possibilities. Managing Negative Thoughts Ama shares three strategies that have helped her manage and overcome negative thoughts. Firstly, she practices journaling and reflecting on the best and worst possible outcomes of a decision. This exercise has helped her realize that the worst-case scenarios are often unrealistic and that fear should not dictate her choices.  Secondly, Ama's faith is vital in providing her with strength and guidance in navigating negative thoughts. Her morning routine of prayer and Bible reading centers and empowers her.  Lastly, Ama mentions her study of John Kehoe's work on manifestation and the science behind it. Being data-driven, she finds it helpful to understand how the brain and quantum reality can be harnessed to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Ama's Professional Journey in HR As an HR professional, Ama shares her experiences in building internship programs, implementing cultural change initiatives, and promoting diversity in the workplace. However, her decision to leave corporate America after starting a family led her to consulting.  Ama expresses her passion for helping organizations overcome negative thoughts related to biases and diversity, fostering inclusive environments that prioritize psychological safety and belonging for all individuals. In this enlightening episode, Ama Hooks emphasizes recognizing and addressing negative thoughts that hinder personal growth and decision-making. Through her own journey of self-discovery and reprogramming her subconscious, she has found strategies such as journaling, faith, and studying the science of manifestation to be effective in managing negative thoughts. Ama's experiences and insights serve as an inspiration to listeners, encouraging them to confront their own doubts and embrace a more positive mindset. “Know your superpower and double down on it. That would be number one. Right. So know what you're really good at. Like Shonda Rhimes says, don't be afraid to brag. Most women don't brag. Right? Like, know what it is and speak to it and put yourself in situations to showcase it and talk to it and know how to leverage it and know how you can become a resource.” -Ama Hooks Resources Ama Hooks on LinkedIn Ama Hooks on Instagram If this episode connected with you, reach out to Linda and let her know. Three speed economy and ESG pressure: Top business editors on what rate rises and a $20k mortgage hit mean for consumer spending, retail and brand purpose

Australia will escape a recession this year but not a downturn, per Sky News Business editor, Ross Greenwood. But the impact of rate rises means the average mortgage payer is now $20k out of pocket. If fewer people move home, fewer white goods and consumer electronics get bought – creating a negative cycle and something of a two-speed economy as the squeezed middle and lower income households cut back. But the third of Australians with no mortgage cash in the bank are still spending, and luxury is booming as a result. Meanwhile, Western Australia is as ever forging its own path and younger consumers still spending, creating a three-speed national economy. But Buy Now Pay Later buttons “are taking a hammering” in WA, warns The West Australian's Business Editor Sarah Jane Tasker. “That raises some concerns about when the pay later kicks in”. Across the economy, the Federal Treasurer is talking up ‘values-based capitalism', which will chime with brands putting purpose at their core. AFR economics editor John Kehoe thinks that trend is here to stay – though may be scuppered in the short-term should economic headwinds strengthen and cost hikes outweigh good intent. “But for the now, in the foreseeable future, people want governments and businesses involved in these sort of social and ESG causes.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Quantum science is now showing proof that our personalities are not fixed. We can create new possibilities regarding our ways of being by changing our identity from a molecular level. It all starts with self-awareness. In order to change old habits and, in essence, change our accustomed neural connections, we must first observe and become aware of our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Although this task requires our discipline, intention and focus, it can prove to be the most rewarding and beneficial step we take towards our well-being. Don't mess with Nyla as she is one tough cookie. Some of you might be tweaked by her some of her comments and she also put me in my place a couple of times too... which I can handle (smile). Therefore, I encourage you to keep an open mind, open heart and be discerning -- as I would say for any of my guests and she talks about this, too.  As someone who delivers the truth, she doesn't disclose where she is located because she feels it is too dangerous (I had another guest that also did not want to impart a specific location). She talks about psychic attacks, and they are so true because I had my own, dear friends. She is a twin flame and explains what that is beyond the belief that it has to do with finding a "love" partner. We talk about NFL player Damar Hamlin who keeled over live on Monday Night Football, Trump, Elon, Twitter, Meghan and Harry, Florida governor DeSantis, Disney and the big picture of parenting in terms of what they are watching and art. After a victory in the Federal Election in part due to the former Liberal Government's mishandling of the economy, the new Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers is set to deliver his 'wellness' budget. FairPlay EP 8 | John Ortiz Kehoe | Justice for an Accuser a Defendant and a Missing Girl -  Explicit Content Warning | 18 + | For Mature Audience Only. August 14 2021 | Imran Siddiqui | Justice News.Net What do you do when out of three the people you have, the only one who can tell you exactly what happened, is dead? How much truth can you find in the remaining two people, one of whom is an accuser and the other one, a defendant. Michigan resident Rose Larner was killed, or overdosed on cocaine or murdered somewhere between the late afternoon and evening of a December day in 1993 and all this occurred between three friends. Bill Brown, Rose's childhood friend, accused another friend John Ortiz Kehoe of the murder, three years after it allegedly occurred. Bill's account given to the prosecutors was the only eyewitness testimony used to convict John Ortiz Kehoe and it sent him to life behind bars without any possibility of parole. But a new hearing on John's case raises many questions about what really occurred on that day in December of 1993. Since the past 25 years while incarcerated John has maintained his innocence, and according to him, it was Bill Brown who was the last person left with Rose because John left the two together and went to Mcdonalds to get some food and upon his return found a highly nervous Bill Brown and the dead body of Rose in the bathroom. Too much has been said about this case in the past two decades. I accidentally stumbled upon John's case while listening to the FreeMe Podcast hosted by Thomas Herold. In the case of John Ortiz Kehoe not a single witness was presented from his side. The more you read some of the actual case files the more bizarre the case looks, not because of what the actual accusations were, nor by what the prosecutors were trying to do and not by what was being reported by the media, it looked bizarre because it has so many holes in it that it is now impossible for it to hold any water. This could probably come out as one of the most erroneously reported cases in the history of journalism in the United States of America, and if and when that occurs, it can help address the allegations being made in this case that big media took spoon fed information from the prosecutor's office and ran with it without even taking an independent look at the facts and then made a business out of that lie for decades. More digging may even show, how some of the media companies, thinking they might have fucked up big time, are trying to now carefully inject, that final argument from the sidelines, that oh, maybe this guy didn't do it after all, and maybe they played a huge role in sending the wrong man to prison for life. Prosecutors caught lying is nothing new, it's just people don't give a damn anymore and thus corrupt officials mostly get away with it. If you are a human being, and you are reading this, then you understand, that when a person accuses the other of harming someone, especially of things like murder, incineration, dismemberment and cannibalism, they have to show some kind of an evidence to prove that in a court of law and they must also provide the other side the right to freely present their case, their witnesses, their alibis and their testimony impartially and without any fear of bias,  harassment, lying, coercion and intimidation. If this is missing then understand that it's unfair from the start, and there is no other moral way to look at it. This is the first time John Ortiz Kehoe is speaking with Justice News and freely describing what really happened on that dreadful day in December of 1993. This conversation intends to seek the truth and justice for all parties involved, especially for Rose Larner, who is no longer here to defend herself. There are 3 core elements to this case, Bill Brown, Rose Larner and John Kehoe. A lot has been said about the three in a very chaotic and psychotic manner, most of which was actually based on hearsay, prosecution fed material and rumors. What we are trying to do in this episode of FairPlay is shed light on the facts of what has not been said or done about this case, so far. Peace. The JBlog

In the world of business, and especially property, it's a rollercoaster of challenges and emotions. So many high-profit highs, and so many excruciating lows are all possible. And that's why your mindset is absolutely key! That's one of the main reasons why Paul McFadden wrote his best-selling book "Property Success Mindset". And the man who taught Paul everything about mindset and building "Mind Powers" is today's guest: the one and only John Kehoe! Paul's exclusive interview with John in today's show, uncovers John's own personal story that kickstarted his whole fascinating journey decades ago in the Canadian woodlands, and also touches upon Paul's own journey after being taught by John in London almost a decade ago. How our minds and our thoughts can directly affect all that we face in life and in business... How we all have the ability to learn how to harness our Mind Powers for our own benefit... What is it about our environment and the people around us, which affect our thoughts... Why do crises like a Global Virus Pandemic come in and out of our lives, and how we should frame them... It's a fascinating interview with a living legend, whose amazing training should be heralded and known by more people to help that success spread much farther. As John himself says: "our success can help many people; our failure helps no one"...

In this interview he powerfully articulates that what we take into our bodies can have a lasting effect and of the necessity and urgency to clean up our act - is an imperative.   The old adage that ‘the greatest pollution we face is that which is between our ears’ - ‘is our thought process’ and that the sooner we recognise our situation, the sooner we will be able to clean up both our inner and outer world. David is touring NZ over the next few months to share with all concerned the latest knowledge on natural ways to regain optimum health and remain that way for the rest of our life. Some important tips and reminders are: Organic food, especially veggies and fruit is exceptionally important. No Fizzy drinks for children. Kamboucha*  Tea is OK. *Sugar is dangerous. Fasting for adults is good for us all. Watermelon juice fast – detox your kidneys as it is alkalising. Rehydration is important as forty year olds and older are seriously dehydrated. 90% of David’s patients are dehydrated. He has machines that test for this . Do not drink chlorinated fluoridated ‘tap water.’ Electronic Devices – don‘t use them before bed. Turn your wifi router off at night before you go to bed. David calls this sleep hygiene. A good 7-8-9 hours every night. Naturopaths in NZ devote 2 years to nutritional knowledge and if you get less than 70% in your exams you have to sit the entire course again. Whilst MD’s in University have only 3 hours on nutrition, if they miss those lecture they do not need to repeat that lecture. Which clearly shows that food and nutrition are not a priority. For over four decades, John Kehoe has earned worldwide recognition for his pioneering work in the field of Mind Power and Consciousness. He is a warm and energetic teacher, author, socially conscious individual, and proponent of the amazing human potential to transform the world and our lives with the power of our thoughts. In 1975, John Kehoe withdrew to the wooded seclusion of the British Columbia wilderness to spend three years in intensive study and contemplation of the inner workings of the human mind. During this time, Kehoe forged the first straightforward and successful program for developing Mind Power. In 1978, he began traveling and teaching people the principals he had formulated, and the phenomenal success of his speaking tours soon grew to literally encompass the world. John has lectured on every continent and his seminal book, Mind Power has achieved bestseller lists around the world. His teachings relate directly to the powers held within every person to conclusively shape his or her destiny. John’s talks are enthusiastically received worldwide. His passion for his subject and his keen intellect combined with his sense of humor provide an entertaining style that leaves his audience inspired to be their best. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How your mindset and your thoughts are real forces that can either truly make you successful or maintain mediocrity How to get your mind working for you so that you believe in yourself and your product, and therefore are able to go out and make a name for yourself using that confidence Why people whose primary motivation is to make a lot of money usually do not make the money they anticipated What passion and having a purpose can do for you, your capability to attain success, and your ability to live life to the fullest Why knowing what your end goal is and how to break that big picture down into micro goals that can get you putting one foot in front of the other towards that end goal How to acknowledge yourself every step of the way so that you continue the successful vibration and do not get distracted How to change the negative tone using “just my luck” for bad experiences and transform it to a phrase used for good experiences, and in doing so, how that small change can impact your mindset profoundly: from unlucky to lucky Why a balance between life and work is not just something that is said but should be something that is done as part of your regular life and routine to grow and prevent burn-out How to get your mind working for you, and that means eliminating negative thoughts while also finding a way to build successful vibrations Tips on how to start thinking differently about success, money, and life so that you can reach your full potential and truly realize all the dreams you have Ways to contact John: Website: www.learnmindpower.com Twitter: @LearnMindPower Facebook: www.facebook.com/LearnMindPower

It's another great FarrCast! Michael welcomes Jim Iuorio from Chicago Mercantile Exchange to talk markets. Are the markets worried about trade? Maybe a little-- but the big story is interest rates. Does the economy have enough momentum to thrive in the rising rate environment? DC is the gift that keeps giving and Dan Mahaffee is back to guide us through the dysfunction. The House fails to pass a Farm Bill; this could be harbinger of things to come. And could have economic ramifications. Dan and Michael go through some of the names they are watching in the spring -- and ones you should too. John Kehoe joins Michael to talk trade, China, and N. Korea. It's a trade cease-fire this week. John goes into the deep structural issues that exist in Sino-American relations that are being glazed over. Political issues have real economic impacts beyond daily noise. But John sees the Fed as the biggest issue facing the economy.

The Markets had their worst week in years, then a powerful rally, and the bluster from Washington increases. But the bluster seems to have produced some movement on trade and Markets turned positive to begin the week. Listen in to the FarrCast to get your bearings on the bounces in the markets. Kenny Polcari says we'll see resistance when the S&P 500 hits 2690 and then it will churn. If we continue to make progress resolving trade disputes, we'll go through to new highs, but if not, we'll test the lows again. John Kehoe from The Australian Financial Review joins Michael for talk on politics and economics. The debt situation in the US is worrying for future growth, but business around the world looks at US tax reform favorably -- and other nations are looking at following suit. The FarrCast : Wealth Strategies

It's been a wild week in the markets, but tune in to the FarrCast, and it all makes sense! Michael and regular Kenny Polcari help discern the signal from the noise. The markets tested technical support levels, and Kenny tells us that it's not over-- more churn is to come. We have another great guest on the FarrCast -- from The Australian Financial Review, correspondent John Kehoe. John gives us deep insight not only into the foreign perspective on American politics, but also the American economy. The corporate tax reform in the US has placed pressure in other economies as they compete for capital. John also gives us a deeper understanding of the complexities of trade policy across the Pacific Rim. It's not just the markets that have been wild, but DC as well. There's been another government shutdown (that was over the next morning) and now (maybe) a budget deal. We talk about fiscal (non)discipline, and the economic implications of the horse trading going on.   Listen in, download, and subscribe today!

TCHO, a chocolate factory in San Francisco, has encouraged social entrepreneurship in developing countries through its innovative supply chain practices. In this short audio lecture, John Kehoe, VP of Sourcing and Development at TCHO, discusses the company’s complex supply chain. His story starts with growers in Ghana, Ecuador, Peru, and Madagascar, and moves to to their factory and store in San Francisco. The company has developed TCHOSource, a unique partnership program that connects the TCHO to its sourcing cooperatives around the world through technology. The use of technology throughout the supply chain helps increase the quality, productivity, and sustainability of the chocolate production. Technology use, starting from the co-op level, allows TCHO to help improve the livelihood and craft of its growers. TCHO is promoting social entrepreneurship from the ground up. John Kehoe began his career in international trade in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1987 with a local trading operation. After establishing a $10MM annual cotton trade, he co-founded and operated a leading cocoa exporting business, managing thirty percent of the country’s exports of premium cacao with clients in the United States, Japan, and Europe. In 1999, ED&F Man Cocoa hired Kehoe to restructure a cocoa exporting operation in the Dominican Republic. In 2002, he returned to the United States, and founded “EcoTrade,” a specialty cocoa brokerage and consultancy based in Miami. Joining TCHO in March of 2008, he has helped build TCHOSource through a $3.3MM USAID cooperative development grant. He also created a network of raw materials suppliers providing critical inventory financing. Kehoe holds a BA in economics from Tulane University and attended Venezuela’s IESA Advanced Management Program and the Owner–Directors program at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/quality_and_innovation_as_the_basis_for_sustainability

For TCHO, San Francisco’s only chocolate factory, social entrepreneurship is the focus. In this audio lecture, company executive John Kehoe talks about how the firm not only produces high-end chocolate products, but also helps farmers in developing countries. He discusses challenges associated with sourcing and cultivating quality organic cocoa beans, and what it takes to invest in and work with growers. Kehoe spoke at the Stanford Graduate School of Business at the invitation of the International Development Club. John Kehoe is Vice President of Sourcing and Development at TCHO, San Franciso’s only chocolate factory. He began his career in international trade in Caracas, Venezuela in 1987. Since the cocoa market in Venezuela was liberalized in 1991, his work has been dedicated to the procurement and marketing of specialty cocoa, working closely with farmers, exporters, importers and chocolate manufactures. In 1999, ED&F Man Cocoa hired Kehoe to restructure a cocoa exporting operation in the Dominican Republic. In 2002, he returned to the United States, and founded EcoTrade, a specialty cocoa brokerage and consultancy based in Miami. Through friendships and contacts developed over the years, Kehoe expanded his experiences to initiate new relationships and diversify supply in Ecuador, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Madagascar, and to include fair trade cocoa from Ghana and the Ivory Coast. This work was considered by many as pioneering a market in the United States for specialty cocoa. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/social_entrepreneurship_and_cocoa_farmers
