Were finally back after a long break! As usual, we jumped into all the newer stuff we've been listening to and then talked about the Decibel Magazine tour, & got a collection update from Stan. We finished off with an interview with Luca Indrio of Necrot about the new album Lifeless Birth. We got into all the issues the band had to go through between the last album and this one, carving there own identify in death metal, keeping there songs memorable, and at the end messed around with some band vs. band and album vs. album questions. Today's episode features a discussion with Nick Seaver, a professor at Tufts University and the author of Computing Taste: Algorithms and the Makers of Music Recommendation from the University of Chicago Press. Nick is an anthropologist who studies how people use technology to make sense of cultural things. His book is the product of ethnographic observation and conversations with developers working on music recommendation algorithms and other systems designed to understand and cater to user preferences. His research gives us a better understanding of the motivations of the executives and engineers designing systems to command our attention, which he considers to be “a currency, a capacity, a filter, a spotlight, and a moral responsibility.”

Let us remind you up front, again, that this is a RAP podcast. Got it? Good. Okay. So, in this week's episode, we talk about the 2003 Thomas Jane vehicle Dream Catcher... that time Mark Wahlberg said he would've prevented 9/11... and whether Big Pun really needed all those rulers. In the digital economy, recommendation algorithms get…a LOT of attention. To some, they're the special sauce behind everything from Spotify's personalized playlists to Tik Tok's “For You” page. For others, they represent a dark, vibe-generating demiurge slowly sapping music's social power. But for all the discussion of how these programs are transforming our world(s), there's surprisingly little analysis of what—exactly—they are, or how they're meant to work. Answering these seemingly simple questions is the goal of Nick Seaver's new book “Computing Taste,” which explores the identities, goals, and practices of the programmers behind these technologies. Far from Machiavellian manipulators, the coders he describes are surprisingly idealistic music-lovers, desperately trying to analyze an almost infinitely complex cultural practice. Their failures to do so—and the ideologies they adopted as a result—would have enormous implications for the development of digital music, remaking genres, redefining listening, and shaping the platforms at the heart of the modern industry. Put it this way—we'll definitely never look at a "Discover Weekly" playlist the same way again.
We are joined by Nick Sever – author of the new book Computing Taste: Algorithms and the Makers of Music Recommendation – to discuss his excellent ethnographic research on the creation of algorithmic recommendation systems. Nick spent a long time getting to really know the people who make these systems and his book offers so much original, granular detail about the various practices, theories, and relationships that influence the engineers behind these algorithms. Nick's book also contains extremely interesting and surprising applications of classic anthropological theory to contemporary algorithmic technology. ••• Nick's book – Computing Taste: Algorithms and the Makers of Music Recommendation https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/C/bo183892298.html ••• Nick's twitter – https://twitter.com/npseaver Subscribe to hear more analysis and commentary in our premium episodes every week! https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills Hosted by Jathan Sadowski (www.twitter.com/jathansadowski) and Edward Ongweso Jr. (www.twitter.com/bigblackjacobin). Kasting Cuzzins: A Podcast About Rap... By Two Recovering White Rappers
"Is this butt rock?" That's the essential question posed in this week's episode of Kasting Cuzzins, the only podcast (that we know of) where two former white rappers reflect on their time in rap... and typically feel quite bad about it. Will that be the case this time? You'll have to join us and see if this week's track, "I'll Let You," can rise above the mucky muck. Along the way we'll discuss (what else?) key lime pie... Incubus... and the tragic loss of the "Trapped in the Closet" series. Let's gooo! Follow us on Twitter: @KastingCuzzins / @KeefHerbin Follow Chris on TikTok: @wontkeefdoit
The people who make music recommender systems have lofty goals: they want to broaden listeners' horizons and help obscure musicians find audiences, taking advantage of the enormous catalogs offered by companies like Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora. But for their critics, recommender systems seem to embody all the potential harms of algorithms: they flatten culture into numbers, they normalize ever-broadening data collection, and they profile their users for commercial ends. Drawing on years of ethnographic fieldwork, anthropologist Nick Seaver describes how the makers of music recommendation navigate these tensions: how product managers understand their relationship with the users they want to help and to capture; how scientists conceive of listening itself as a kind of data processing; and how engineers imagine the geography of the world of music as a space they care for and control. Computing Taste: Algorithms and the Makers of Music Recommendation (U Chicago Press, 2022) rehumanizes the algorithmic systems that shape our world, drawing attention to the people who build and maintain them. In this vividly theorized book, Seaver brings the thinking of programmers into conversation with the discipline of anthropology, opening up the cultural world of computation in a wide-ranging exploration that travels from cosmology to calculation, myth to machine learning, and captivation to care. Nick Seaver is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the director of the Science, Technology, and Society program at Tufts University. Currently she's the Head of Marketing and Growth at Block Party, a company that designs consumer tools for online safety and anti-harassment. In today's episode, we explore the marketing strategies that helped Airtable punch above its weight and build an established brand. We also dig into how Airtable was able to find its first super-users, how customer success played a key role in getting early traction, and the do's and don'ts for marketing investments. Zoelle also shares her experience working for VaccinateCA (which ended up playing a massive role in helping get people vaccinated during the pandemic) and several tips for obtaining valuable customer feedback.Find the full transcript here: https://www.lennyspodcast.com/lessons-from-airtables-unconventional-growth-strategy-zoelle-egner/#transcriptWhere to find Zoelle Egner:• Twitter: https://twitter.com/zoelle• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zoelleegner/Where to find Lenny:• Newsletter: https://www.lennysnewsletter.com• Twitter: https://twitter.com/lennysan• LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lennyrachitsky/Referenced:• Patrick McKenzie on Twitter: https://twitter.com/patio11• The Last of Us on HBO: https://www.hbo.com/the-last-of-us• Airtable: https://www.airtable.com/• Hacker News: https://news.ycombinator.com/• Block Party app: https://www.blockpartyapp.com/• Kathy Sierra's book Badass: Making Users Awesome: https://www.amazon.com/Badass-Making-Awesome-Kathy-Sierra/dp/1491919019• Gainsight: https://www.gainsight.com/• Datadog: https://www.datadoghq.com/• Notion: https://www.notion.so/• Zapier: https://zapier.com/• Computing Taste: Algorithms and the Makers of Music Recommendation: https://www.amazon.com/Computing-Taste-Algorithms-Makers-Recommendation/dp/0226822974• Ancillary Justice: https://www.amazon.com/Ancillary-Justice-Imperial-Radch-Leckie/dp/031624662X/• The Happiness Lab podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-happiness-lab-with-dr-laurie-santos/id1474245040• Gastropod podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/gastropod/id918896288• Everything Everywhere All at Once on Showtime: https://www.sho.com/titles/3493875/everything-everywhere-all-at-once• Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/title/81518991• Figma: https://www.figma.com/• Webflow: https://webflow.com/• Clay: https://www.clay.com/• MKT1 Newsletter: https://newsletter.mkt1.co/• Emily Kramer on Lenny's Podcast: https://www.lennyspodcast.com/how-to-build-a-powerful-marketing-machine-emily-kramer-asana-carta-mkt1/In this episode, we cover:(00:00) How VaccinateCA helped bridge a gap in infrastructure(05:00) Zoelle's lessons from her time at VaccinateCA(18:04) How Zoelle broke into the tech industry(19:01) Flocking patterns(24:21) What Block Party does(24:32) Zoelle's storytelling(29:15) Tactics for punching above your weight as a small startup(31:30) The importance of having a highly detail-oriented person on staff(33:33) Why Airtable used billboards(36:43) Growth and marketing strategies at Airtable(42:29) Using data provided by your customers to build features that help future customers(50:59) Why customer success and marketing should be one team(52:56) Things to avoid in marketing(58:04) The power of templates(1:00:58) Why Airtable did not prioritize templates for top-of-funnel revenue (1:02:04) Why just getting PR to “get PR” is not a good strategy(1:04:57) The importance of getting customer feedback and investing in customer success(1:05:51) Simple strategies for getting customer feedback(1:07:53) Lightning roundProduction and marketing by https://penname.co/. Kasting Cuzzins: A Podcast About Rap... By Two Recovering White Rappers
Big things are happening at #LunchBreakz, fam. In addition to indulging Chris' new fascination with numerology, the Cuzzins are sharing a BIG announcement... one that's sure to echo throughout the lunchroom for some time. But it isn't all ciphers and revelations. (Wasn't that a Muse album?) In today's ep, you'll also hear KC's final recommendations for 2022 - including tracks by Jockstrap, Joywave and more - plus a POWERFUL debate over whether or not grits can be good. Join us?

Thiiis is how we dooo it... And by "dooo it" we of course mean, "podcast." Hey! Welcome to the eighth episode of #LunchBreakz, lovingly recorded the night before the midterm elections. But don't worry, this (still) is very much NOT a political Kast. Go listen to Ezra Klein or something. Today we are gushing over the just-released mixtape in Westside Gunn's Hitler Wears Hermes series, as well as tracks by Prince Daddy & the Hyenas and LVL Up. The squad also pays respects to recently departed rapper, artist and former Weatherman, Tame One. And Chris reveals a new catchphrase. Join us? Follow us on Twitter: @KastingCuzzins / @KeefHerbin

Happy Halloween, KC Nation! In today's special edition of #LunchBreakz, we're talking about 1998's Godzilla: The Album. It's the soundtrack to a film that posits Godzilla's pronouns are, in fact, she/her. And more than that, it's the perfect opportunity for us to talk about how crazy it is that a REAL-LIFE MURDERER leads the movie. (Ferris Bueller killed a guy!) As we quest to determine how Epic Records was able to gather Puff Daddy, Ben Folds and Rage Against the Machine all on one soundtrack - for a dogshit film, btw - we'll also discuss tracks by The Unicorns and Jape... as well as the proper oyster-cracker-to-soup ratio... and much more. Join us? Or should we say... COME WITH US. Follow us on Twitter: @KastingCuzzins / @KeefHerbin

Hail and well met! Prithee, join thine brothers in Kasting, Alex and Chris, as we devote a significant chunk of this week's LB to shitting on renaissance festivals. Weird sex stuff, long lines, undercooked turkey... yuck. But it isn't all bad. Along the way, we make time to chat about the mid-2000s indie rap masterpiece, "Alopecia" by Why? We also highlight individual tracks by Damu the Fudgemunk and BADBADNOTGOOD, as well as praise the general deliciousness of sushi. Join us? Follow us on Twitter: @KastingCuzzins / @KeefHerbin
