Unlike long-time homeschoolers, those of us who pull our teens, have teens who never want to go back into the system. That has been my experience. Today we discuss what our teens need from us...and yes, they still need us. They need us more than ever! Sit back, grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and let's discuss our beautiful teenagers. By the way, this is purely anecdotal and you are on tender ground as I share my hard.  Save the Date: November 1, 2024; 11am Pacific; 12pm Mountain; 1pm Central; 2pm Eastern for a free workshop "Making a Magical Christmas: Practical and Simple Tips to Make the Christmas Season Beautiful." In this episode, Dr. Zanotti discusses the delicate balance of conflict resolution in healthcare. Conflict is common in our daily work in the ICU. Many clinicians avoid conflict and have negative feelings towards it. However, conflict, when managed appropriately, can lead to significant benefits for our patients and teams. Dr. Zanotti's discussion is based on a webinar he presented earlier this month as part of Sound Critical Care Leadership Week. Seek the stress. Scale with soul. Embrace your uniqueness. These are just a few of the pearls of wisdom flying fast and furious when Christina Luconi, Chief People Officer at Rapid7, visits with Host Chris Schembra on this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times. Her self-awareness, strength and positive vision have not only been central to building out staff for some amazing startup companies (from inception through IPO). These are also the traits that have defined her full and fascinating life – whether taking her teen-aged daughters on a transformational trip to Tanzania or snatching life-giving lessons from a life-changing cancer diagnosis. This is a woman who brings her whole, authentic self to every interaction and in the process offers connection and empathy to others. You'll learn about how Christina expresses gratitude and the powerful benefits it confers, rippling out in how she frames “negative autobiographical experiences.” Where did she find the courage to reinvent herself at the age of 14 without erasing who she was before? When did she realize that she held within her the ability to embrace things in tension and turn them into opportunity? Christina shares her journey and explains how she has been able to bridge her reality as the lone woman in many C-suites by staying true to her core values: “If you work hard enough, there aren't a lot of boundaries you can't overcome. IF you're committed and drive towards that!” Tune in to find out why this Bostonian dynamo hopped in her car to pay Chris a visit. It's a very special episode chalk full of “news you can use” and that you won't want to miss!Interested in hearing more from Christina? It makes my world expand.” (Christina) “There's something beautiful about (not) turning your back on the past but looking for the positive benefits in it and keeping it as part of your life story.” (Chris) “Everything I have lived through is an opportunity. There are things that I've screwed up or am not proud of, but I don't dwell on them. I look at what I can take away from that moment and do better.” (Christina) “If you work hard enough, there aren't a lot of boundaries you can't overcome. IF you're committed and drive towards that!” (Christina) “Life is not about avoiding bad things happening to you. Life is about avoiding a negative mental attitude when those things occur.” (Chris) “Scaling with soul is about how you keep the essence of your value set and what you're trying to be … You can still be a really great place!” (Christina) “You can observe or you can engage. And those are two really different things.” (Christina) “There's good in everybody. You just have to be open to finding it and open-hearted to know that just because someone is different from you doesn't make them better or worse. We're all just humans.” (Christina) “Hard times don't have to create loneliness. Hard times can create meaningful moments of connection.” (Chris) “All the best things in my life have happened when I've said ‘yes,' versus ‘no.' ” (Christina) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Click here to learn more about “Taking Care of Business? “Work culture is really how people work together. But in my opinion, there are three major components: it's the employer, it's the leadership, and it's the staff—all staff, we're not only talking nurses. We know that it takes a village to really make clinical care happen. All three of those components are critical in creating a healthy work environment. But in my opinion, there are three major components: it's the employer, it's the leadership, and it's the staff—all staff, we're not only talking nurses. We know that it takes a village to really make clinical care happen. All three of those components are critical in creating a healthy work environment. The staff component, including the clinical nurses, is key to that. When you look at how the nurses work together and the environment that they are working in, their teamwork, camaraderie, and connections to each other can actually help those staff make it through when perhaps there may be some challenges with employers or leaders as they work through whatever changes they need to make.” Timestamp (TS) 04:12 “It's important to recognize that when you motivate and influence people, whether it's positively or negatively, you're behaving as a leader. There may be people who have some personal need to feel like they can be the judge of others and that they have a very tight group, and unless you're looked at favorably by that group, then you don't have value. So, in this particular type of case, you can have a nursing leader show all the value in the world to that staff, but if you have these cliques where people come in and they feel like, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm working with so-and-so on this particular shift.' Or ‘I've been assigned to this shift permanently. How will I survive?,' that is a big driver of turnover.” TS 10:40 “Watching someone working with a family or a patient, and when the person comes out when they least expect it, saying something like, ‘That was really an amazing interaction, and a very tough situation, and you handled that beautifully.' That can go a long way, and it's all part of value and recognition. . . . Let's show value where value needs to be shown.” TS 21:24 “That value is a 360-degree type of value where really everyone that you're working with in the physician-nurse relationship is critical. Recognizing the role that nurses play and looking at the nurses as colleagues is absolutely critical.” TS 22:56 “Right now, in many places still across the country, nurses feel that they don't have the tools they need to do their job. That of course leads to this negative culture where nurses are very upset, they're coming in extremely unhappy, and they're communicating that unhappiness to everybody, and they have very real concerns. And management has taken different approaches to that, in health or not health as the case may be, and now we have to focus on: How do we fix it? And I think those are the factors that led to where we are. We have a lot of work to do, but at the same time, organizations have to also make fundamental changes.” TS 26:45 “Ultimately, I don't think people on the front line realize how much power they actually have. And the power is in creating effective working relationships, and that includes the nurse-patient interaction, but it also includes working with people.” TS 39:15

SUMMARYIf you've ever struggled with the idea of meditation, try this out: How about no beads, no sitting cross-legged, no chants or ashram journeys? The transcendental practice developed by Host Chris Schembra's guest on this episode of the Gratitude Through Hard Time podcast speaks to all of us who want to embody our deepest visions but find our busy minds get in the way. Vishen Lakhiani's practice, "The Six Phase Guided Meditation," skips the things that make mindfulness a challenge – especially for frenetic, creative entrepreneurs. As he lays out in his new book, coming out this week, his program's goals are transformational not because of a series of disciplines or rituals but because they bring alignment in the most direct, simplest of ways.Vishen's journey to wholeness began 20 years ago, when he abandoned a burnout job in Silicon Valley. That decision to look for a deeper connection with himself and others has culminated in the fundamentals he spells out in his compelling new book, "The Six Phase Guided Meditation" and can also be explored via his Mind Valley apps and the hugely popular seminar he conducts in cities across the world. If you're ready to “dream bigger,” then this episode will give you a powerful starting place to shift your mindset and make real what you see and feel. In wrapping up, Vishen reminds us that luck is something we can choose. Reality is something we can bend. And a more abundant world is something we can create, through the unity that lies within us all. “This is the grand magic trick that makes life easy; that helps build incredible businesses,” he says. “This is the secret that helps you live a life that seems blessed.”Whether you think you are an expert at meditation or that meditating is impossible for you, Vishen's new book is a must-read. It's transformational. Pre-Order before 9/20 and get 500 Customizable Meditations through his APP to use for a year - FREE! You can find the link here.If you enjoyed this conversation, please click here to listen to previous episodes of Gratitude Through Hard Times. And you can find out much more about Chris and his 7:47 Virtual Gratitude Experience at this link. KEY TOPICS:If you could give credit or thanks to one person in your life who hasn't been given enough credit or thanks, who would that be? Vishen recognizes his ex-wife for being an “incredible entity” and wonderful mother to his children. On souls and how Vishen believes they were meant to function – not necessarily as monogamous mates for life.Advancing Humanity: Businesses are capable of raising universal consciousness, but it doesn't have to be a blanket effort. Vishen challenges every owner to evolve individually towards consciousness and spiritual growth for the greater good. Our ultimate growth is rooted in awareness of our powers within, the consciousness we connect with and extend beyond our physical bodies. The Concept of Unity: Separation is a protective mechanism – and illusion.Try this exercise from the Sufi poet and thinker, Rumi: Close your eyes and think about the message you want to communicate in silence to another person and remember – whatever energy you put out is what you will receive back.Studies of gratitude practices and forgiveness confirm that they yield positive benefits, such as:Once we recognize how intrinsically connected we are to everything else on the planet, we move towards unity and understanding of the oneness we all share. The Truth About Meditation:How Transcendent Practices work by:About "The Six Phase Guided Meditation":About the Pillars of Happiness and Vision that comprise Vishen's six phases.Vishen reflects on the criticism and rejection he experienced at one point from peers in his native Malaysia and how he persevered with his practice, using it to transform his response to one of compassion.Dreaming Big: About using creative visualization to reprogram our brains and deliver a mindset embedded with powerful belief and emotional connection. All About Dan Sullivan's Happiness Gap and how Vishen has incorporated it.Vishen's Ultimate Hope: For people to understand that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience and that everything starts with tapping into the power of our souls and intuition, our ability to manifest the future and connect with all life.Parting Thought: The secret is to live in harmony, balancing balancing play, minimizing stress and overwhelm, feeling God's blessing – the love – everyday. QUOTABLE“Your business is not the most important thing. Your business, rather, is the ultimate vehicle for your personal evolution.” (Vishen)“If your business fails, it doesn't matter. If your business hits a billion dollars, it doesn't matter. What matters is that running your business is helping you grow.” (Vishen)“The greatest thing we can do as humans is move toward unity … and our own fundamental truth.” (Vishen)“Our consciousness never actually ends. It blends into all life. We are connected to plants, to energies, to animals. We are connected not just to our family but to the homeless person we pass on the street. When you can move towards that level of understanding, you cannot hurt someone else.” (Vishen)“What Vishen has done is written a book and invented a method that gives you access to this internal way of being through a 15- to 20-minute transcendental meditation.” (Chris)“What makes you an entrepreneur is the fact that your mind is constantly, creating, jumping from one thing to another. That is your superpower. You do not want to slow that down.” (Vishen)“Even the people who are judging you, the people who are tearing you down, their souls are connected to you. They are not necessarily evil or bad. They are simply people who are unaware of who they are and probably going through their own moments of grief, jealousy or bitterness.” (Vishen)“By creating a transcendent practice that shifts you into a mindset of love and compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, vision-making and happiness – all these things – you are relying on your agency to create that change. You don't have to rely on others to fix themselves in order for a conflict to be healed.” (Chris)“The Law of Attraction isn't based on your wants. It's based really on your resonance. The universe doesn't give you what you want. Rather, it gives you who you are.” (Vishen)“If you can appreciate how far you've come and live in that feeling of appreciation, what happens is that … what you appreciate appreciates.” (Vishen) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Learn more about Vishen's latest and previous books here.Neal Donald Walsch's book, "Conversations With God."About the program that kickstarted Vishen's own work: The Silva Method.Find out more about the Arbinger Institute's book, "The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict."Dan's Sullivan's book, "The Gap and The Gain: The High Achievers' Guide to Happiness, Confidence and Success."Historian Ron Chernow's book, "Titan: The Life of John D. The Prosperity Show Podcast. Financial Health | Business Success | Peace of Mind

Today I talk about something that has begun to really interest me – the inner world of people in leadership positions of all kinds. When thinking or speaking about leaders, we don't often examine their emotional expression and development, even though their habitual emotions affect all of their decisions. Highlights I talk about how I have developed meaningful relationships with people online. People are often taught that there is something wrong with them that needs fixing, and I don't subscribe to that. Feelings that are common among leaders include feeling alone and feeling like an outsider. For some leaders, it's dangerous to let people know what's really going on inside of you and how you really feel about yourself and your followers. This creates a feeling of separation, and we have an inherent need for connection. Becoming a leader is sometimes a coping mechanism for dealing with life. I think it's important for leaders to recognize their own deep-seated feelings of aloneness. Aloneness often leads people to become members of groups that don't have the interests of society at heart. In order to be a person of peace, you have to find peace within yourself. One of the things that interest me is bringing together entrepreneurial leaders who often feel separated so they can learn how to really feel connected on an authentic level. If you're going to learn how to develop empathy, you also have to learn how to set boundaries, so you don't take responsibility for other people's problems. Life got in the way this week, thus the replay. The book I mention in this episode has had a profound effect on me and I wanted to share this with you in case you missed the original posting.  It started last Thanksgiving when I had an experience at a Thanksgiving gathering that my brother Marc also attended. He said something that really pushed my buttons, and in this episode, I discuss what happened and what I had to go through to resolve the conflict. Highlights I talk about what happened at the Thanksgiving gathering and how I reached out to Kimberly Rauch and the group I had been attending. Kimberly suggested that I read the book The Anatomy of Peace. The book had a deep impact on me. I began to see how I had been expressing a heart of war with my brothers because of the favoritism shown to boys over girls. The difference between a heart of peace and a heart of war is explained. A quote from the book: “When our hearts are at war, we can't see clearly. We give ourselves the best opportunity to make clear-minded decisions only to the extent that our hearts are at peace.” I also talk about self-directed passive-aggressive behavior and how that has affected me over the years. If we can't express hidden anger, then we will act it out in various ways – subconsciously. People who have been abused or neglected in childhood often have a heart of war towards authorities. If we take responsibility for what we're creating and we accept what comes along as what we need, if something uncomfortable comes along, we can observe our responses and make changes when necessary. I am the only one who can control my response to external stimuli. After I understood my response to my brother's comment, I felt an enormous sense of relief and my energy levels have increased considerably. Treat yourself like someone you love. If something isn't going the way you wanted it to, get in touch with your inner experience and see you if you can figure out why you're creating what you're creating. Remember, there's nothing wrong with you that needs fixing and you aren't doing anything wrong. Do you have a heart at peace or heart at war? He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources from Indiana University, and a B.A. from Brigham Young University. As a consultant, he works with organizations to develop their leaders and improve their culture. Ryan is the author of Success Mindsets: The Key to Unlocking Greater Success in Your Life, Work, & Leadership. He has written multiple articles for Leading Saints, including a series of articles on community. Highlights 8:10 Where the community articles started 9:50 Many people attend church but they don't feel they fit, or don't attend “What community is and why is it important?” How do we create a community in the church so everyone feels welcome? 14:00 There are three community types: basic, involved and united. It is a continuum. 14:45 Basic community: little attachment, little involvement, much like an alumni group, few demands and little connection 15:45 Involved community: share more, some emotional connection but still disconnected but not fully accepted, much like a large workplace 17:30 United community: Share interests, goals and beliefs. Strong identification with group much like a family: when they hurt, we hurt. Provides acceptance, love and protection. This is what it should be within the church. 20:20 A united community is ingrained deep in the LDS culture and doctrinally founded, but with some negative side effects Low cognitive diversity. Can't think outside a box, inability to allow different perspectives. This is not doctrinal thought, but community thought. 25:30 Lack of inclusivity. Difficult to allow others in, many feel judged, hard to accept others. Often is unintentional judging over what is/is not socially acceptable (tattoos, piercing). 29:00 Lower psychological safety: When something is different, or comments in class get questioned, others are less likely to share. People feel uncomfortable expressing their opinions. 33:40 "Sometimes we have a stronger desire to be right, than we do to love others." 36:20 How do we improve the united community in the Church? We must be "intentional". 37:20 Six elements of an intentional community Charity Safety Openness Inclusiveness Being present Having a clear purpose and common cause 38:30 Charity: we must see everyone as people, and value them as such. 41:00 Safety: do our members feel safe and able to to comment in class? 43:25 Openness: we have a social pressure to certainty. If value is on knowing, we are limiting learning. We don't know all and we can learn from others 45:50 Inclusiveness: everyone should feel welcome. Don't let little things get in the way of loving them. Care less about how they look and more about how they feel. 47:40 Be Present: we are as involved as we can be, regardless, while we are there in attendance we should be present. Make our meetings matter, provide a value. Intentionally create meetings worth coming to. 50:45 Having Purpose: is everyone heading in the same direction? 53:00 Cliques are not necessarily bad. Smaller groups may allow more connections with others. Perhaps smaller groups can strengthen the whole community. 56:40 Most important to understand what community is and why it is important. Be mindful. Naming and classifying things give us order and direction; it is helpful to know where we can find those things and perhaps what to expect from them. Something similar happens when we meet someone. We put them in a box and create an idea of how they are, how they think, and so forth, depending on their title or job. But most importantly, we do that to ourselves; we place ourselves in the category we think we belong to, and that can be limiting. We'll hardly picture ourselves doing something different from what someone in that box is expected to do. Today I'm joined by Noa Ronen, a true outside of the box coach. She is an Executive Coach, Author, a Group Coach, Blogger, and a Vlogger. Noa has over 20 years of experience in change management, HR and project management, talent development and relocation, and ex-pat coaching. Throughout her coaching, Noa's mission is to help people dare, stirring a conscious leaders' movement. In this episode, we talked about Noa's particular journey in becoming a coach, her idea of coaching before, and how it evolved into what it is today. We also talked about the differences between being and doing energy and what we can do to find our courage. Noa kindly shared her perspective on values and how they guide us throughout our lives. We talked about her latest book, about her ego, and how she reassessed her why after asking honest questions to herself. Noa also shared the details of her Walking Mastermind, a revolutionary coaching group session she does for no charge. Keep telling me why. 56:15 There can still be disagreement, and this is when you take the time and patience to seek to find the common ground 58:00 Failing to invite those labeled as the terrorist to the peacebuilding process. Unanimous decisions begin with exploring the perspective of others, as with the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. 1:01:00 When people do feel heard, valued, and seen, they are willing to make adjustments. This can't be faked and must be felt at a deeper level through the hard work of intentionally building a relationship. 1:03:35 Dangerous love is always a struggle because we are imperfect, but the key is the humility to repent and reconnect. 1:04:30 We have the same stigma around conflict that we have around sinning. Company culture and the importance of setting the company’s vision as the CEO. The challenges when it comes to building, managing and growing a team. Jim McNeal from The Arbinger Institute shares how to improve effectiveness at work through the outward mindset. It’s a different approach to how we perceive the people around us, and as a result, accomplish more by serving more. The Outward Mindset Helped JerryJerry discusses how he was able to increase his own personal effectiveness at work. After receiving a copy of The Outward Mindset: Seeing Beyond Ourselves while on a swag hunt at a recent conference, he devoured just about every word on the flight home. That is a rare feat for Jerry. He’s a slow reader.By the time the plane landed, he was asking himself the following questions: I’m worried about getting processes right. What if instead, I focus on my coworkers and what they need to do what they need to accomplish? What if I took a page from my leadership’s playbook, and looked at them as people with challenges and triumphs just like me? What can I do to provide my team what they need to be successful?Servant Leadership on Another LevelServing your staff is the greatest thing you can do for your own company’s goals. When a leader takes on some outward thinking, those served by the leader are empowered to serve customers.Henry Ford once said, “Whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you’re right.”Mindset is what drives our behavior. If one’s focus is inward, everyone else in the group also will think about themselves. When we shift our mindsets beyond ourselves, our actions follow and we set a consistent tone for a culture of collaboration. The outward mindset is about tearing down silos. It is about building a culture of trust, collaboration and synergy.Links and ResourcesCheck out The Arbinger Institute at ArbingerInstitute.com. What Every Leader Should Consider About Community in Their Ward | An Interview with Ryan Gottfredson

Leading Saints Podcast

Ryan Gottfredson is an assistant professor of Organizational Behavior at Cal State Fullerton where he researches and teaches leadership, and is a leadership consultant. He first became interested in organizational behavior during high school in a sports psychology class, and now holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources from Indiana University and a BA from Brigham Young University. He has worked for Gallup and written multiple articles for Leading Saints, including a series of articles on community. Highlights 8:10 Where the community articles started 9:50 Many people attend church but they don’t feel they fit, or don't attend “What community is and why is it important?” How do we create a community in the church so everyone feels welcome? Be mindful.
