While best known for her seeming nonstop flow of hit albums and singles throughout the 70's and 80's, Melba made cultural history long before that, beginning her performing career as Dionne in the original cast of the musical Hair while becoming the first black woman to replace a white actress (future film star Diane Keaton) in a featured role on Broadway. In 1970, the same year her debut album I Got Love earned her a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, she won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Lutibelle in Purlie – a role she would later reprise in the 1981 TV adaptation for Showtime. Soon after the success of “The Melba Moore/Clifton Davis Show,” she signed with Buddha Records, where she scored the Top Ten Billboard dance hits “This is It” and “Make Me Believe in You” and the Grammy nominated Top 20 R&B smash “Lean on Me.” Signing to Capitol in the early 80s, Melba enjoyed a second prolific decade of success with Billboard Top Ten R&B albums like Never Say Never and A Lot of Love and many hit singles, including “Love's Comin' At Ya” and the #1 hits “A Little Bit More” with Freddie Jackson and “Falling,” a hypnotic ballad featuring one of the longest held notes (nearly 20 seconds!) in recorded history. In addition, Melba's 1985 hit “Read My Lips” earned her a third Grammy nod (for Best Female Rock Performance), making her only the third Black artist after Donna Summer and Michael Jackson to be nominated in a rock category. Some of her highlights in the 2000s include an appearance in the film The Fighting Temptations (starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyonce) and a role in a production of Ain't Misbehavin'. Imagine is the title track to Melba's latest (and 28th overall) album offers an optimistic vision of global love and unity during a particularly fraught sociopolitical era. “The Courtship of Bess Richards” (October 4, 1986) The second episode of Amen concerns Sherman Hemsley's Ernie trying to land his choir a new singer in Nell Carter's Bess, and the result is a comedy of errors in which both he and she perform romantic interest that neither is capable of actually feeling. The result is a WWF-style wrestling match between these two iconic sitcom stars, and we're joined once again by Dr. Alfred L. Martin to discuss how this is rendered all the stranger because Hemsley and Carter both were closeted and therefore all too accustomed to acting out hetero identities different from how they lived privately. This episode mentions a TV Guide article about Sherman Hemsley's private life that I now cannot find online. However, I bought the issue on eBay and will post as soon as it arrives. This is a special encore episode of Broadway Nation. 1970s Broadway experienced another blast from the past with the return of the Black Musical. More than a dozen hit black musicals opened during the decade, and three of them won the Tony Award for BEST MUSICAL. About half of these were new, original musical plays – mostly adaptations of popular plays or novels. All of them employed a combination of rhythm & blues, pop, rock, jazz and traditional Broadway style music to help tell their stories. The other half were musical revues that showcased the classic songs of the great black songwriters of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. These shows represented a significant black wing of the ongoing Nostalgia Craze. Please join me as I explore the musical plays PURLIE, RAISIN, and THE WIZ,; the gospel musicals DON'T BOTHER ME I CAN'T COPE, AND YOUR ARMS TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD.; and the songbook revues BUBBLING BROWN SUGAR, AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', EUBIE!, SOPHISTICATED LADIES, and BLACK AND BLUE. Episode 190 - A Conversation w/Legend Melba MooreI had the honor and pleasure to have a phone interview with Melba Moore! She was humble, gracious, honest and a sweet joy. Find out what she thought about being a legend and why she is transparent with her life's journey!I interviewed Ms Moore to write an article for Sheen Magazine's website. The conversation was so rich, I asked her if she'd mind if I released the authentic conversation and she said I could. Words in a written form would not shine as much as hearing from her directly, so here it is!

Already Topping the American & British Soul charts.Melba Moore has done it all, twice. At the tender age of 10, Melba notes that it was then that she was introduced to music and that “I didn't have any music in my life before my mother married my stepfather. He introduced music into our home and into my life.” From that moment forward, Melba began to develop her 5-octave, note-holding soprano that would soon bring audiences to their feet. Theater: Won a Tony Award for best featured actress in a musical for her role in the musical "Purlie," Replaced Diane Keaton in the Broadway musical "Hair" Was first African American woman to play the female lead in the musical "Les Misérables" on Broadway. The Newark, NJ Arts High School graduate started doing recording sessions after a chance meeting with singer/songwriter/composer Valerie Simpson (of Ashford & Simpson). That opportunity in the studio led Melba in the company of the Broadway musical “HAIR!” First in the ensemble of the show, Melba's name was tossed into the conversation when actress Diane Keaton left the show and Melba took the female lead and broke all the rules, being the first Black woman to replace a white actress in a featured role on Broadway. The journey of Melba's career took her meteorically from there to the lead of “PURLIE,” a musical adaptation of a play written by acting husband and wife pioneers Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. That role and its musical soundtrack would earn Moore a Grammy nomination as Best New Artist in 1971 and a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress. The power of her presence on Broadway got Melba noticed and she became a virtual sensation. TelevisionStarred in her own sitcom, "Melba." Melba Moore became so well known that network television offered her a summer variety series. Later signed to Capitol Records, she followed that success with “Love's Comin At Ya” and then a string of R&B hits followed, including "Read My Lips"—which later won Moore a third Grammy nomination (for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance), making her just the third black artist after Donna Summer and Michael Jackson to be nominated in the rock category. Over the last three episodes I charted the rise of the Rock Musical – from HAIR to EVITA, - as well as the very unlikely “Nostalgia Craze” that swept Broadway and America during the 1970’s. Please join me as I explore the musical plays PURLIE, RAISIN, and THE WIZ,; the gospel musicals DON’T BOTHER ME I CAN’T COPE, AND YOUR ARMS TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD.; and the songbook revues BUBBLING BROWN SUGAR, AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’, EUBIE!, SOPHISTICATED LADIES, and BLACK AND BLUE. American Rhythm & Blues singer and actress Melba Moore (b. New York, NY, 29 October 1945) is a four-time Grammy® nominee and the winner of the 1970 Tony Award® for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, for her performance as Lutiebelle in Purlie. With a total of eleven top ten U.S. hits on the Billboard charts over the past 40 years, both singles and albums, Melba Moore continues into the 21st century as one of pop music's most enduring artists.
“The Song” premiered on February 26th, 2013. It was written by Bathsheba Doran, and directed by Michael Morris, whose work we last saw in the season two premiere. The viewership was down a quarter-million from last week, amounting to 3.04 million viewers tuning in on premiere night. We had five featured songs in this episode, with only one pop cover this week! Yay! That cover was Billy Joel’s “Everybody Loves You Now” sung by Andy Mientus and Jennifer Hudson. The only other non-original song was “I Got Love” from the musical Purlie, featured both in its original arrangement and it’s more Derek Wills-Esque risqué arrangement. Lastly we had three Shaiman/Whitman originals, “I’m Not Lost,” “Chest of Broken Hearts,” and the titular song itself, “I Can’t Let Go.” Veronica Moore has got love for her new one-night-only concert, but with a song list of her greatest hits, Derek is afraid the showcase is just “another good girl role for Broadway’s Sweetheart.” As if by kismet, Kyle and Jimmy are looking to get noticed by trying out their material somewhere that counts. That place just happens to be Veronica’s concert, when Derek challenges the duo to present him with a new song for her to debut. As the concert’s music director, Tom tells Kyle and Jimmy that while their trunk songs are good, they aren’t right for the concert. Kyle says that they’ll write “Something Ronnie and Derek, Broadway and them” in the next 24 hours (the same time it took Sondheim to write “Send in the Clowns.” But then Veronica’s “Momager” threatens to fire Derek for making the concert too adult, he succumbs and tells Kyle and Jimmy that their services are no longer needed. One of the concert’s back-up dancers goes MIA as - “and I quote - ‘my boyfriend requested that I no longer work with Derek.’” Ivy Lynn pinch hits as it turns out she was a swing when Veronica was Audrey in Little Shop. And in the biggest surprise of all, Karen is actually OK with working with Ivy. Julia feels hoodwinked when Peter the dramaturg invites her to his NYU class, only to have his students critique her Bombshell script. But after confronting him about his games, they end up day drinking on a weekday and cracking the code to fixing her Bombshell script. Ivy ends up becoming mother hen to the concert: inspiring both Ronnie and Derek to listen to their guts when it comes to the song list. And that final song list ends up including a new song by Jimmy and Kyle after all: a soaring ballad called “I Can’t Let Go.” One last coda: Bombshell is freed of its legal troubles and OK’ed to move to Broadway but under one condition: Eileen isn’t allowed to produce it any more. Somehow, that pesky Ellis still ruins everything! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Angela Birchett gave an Oscar worthy performance in Lifetime's The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel. We caught up with the actress to discuss her background in music, booking the role of Jacky Clark, meeting the real life Jacky in person and her takeaway from this incredible experience. I absolutely loved this movie. Angela did a wonderful job of portraying Jacky as the glue that held the family together. If you haven't seen the movie....What are you waiting for??? Web: https://www.angelabirchett.com Follow: @angelabirchett About This Actress: A native of Detroit, Michigan, Angela embraced her calling to sing and act at an early age. After singing her first solo at her home church: Greater Grace Temple, she knew that she was destined to perform. She spent much of her formative years singing with her sisters in a trio, collectively known as “The Birchett Sisters”. It was in this group that she developed a talent and love for group singing. At 12 years old, Angela was the youngest member of the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra excelling as a percussionist; and at 14, she was cast in her first professional production: a staging of Purlie where she was cast in the role of Missy, effectively making her the youngest cast member, playing one of the oldest characters in the show. Additionally, she was a very active member of the music department at Renaissance High School, under the direction of renowned educator, clinician, and choral director, Nina Scott. After high school, Angela attended Kentucky State University where she double majored in Music Education and Vocal Performance. As a member of the university's Opera Music Theatre Workshop, Concert, and Show Choirs, she was regularly seen on campus performing in several productions and concerts. While at KSU, Angela had the privilege of once again studying under a renowned musician: the late Andrew Smith and was regularly noticed by legendary soprano, Wilhelmenia Fernandez. Angela also received the prestigious honor of being crowned Miss Kentucky State University and placed third in the Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame pageant in 2000, a first for any reigning KSU queen. Following graduation in 2002, Angela returned to Detroit and established the choral department at the Paul Robeson Academy. In the years following her time there, a number of her former students have also been drawn to the performing arts, pursuing university training and careers in musical theater, music recording, modeling, and acting. Feeling an overwhelming inclination to New York City, she made the leap and transitioned full time to performing in 2005. In her first decade here she established herself as a power house and landed roles regionally and on tours starring in hit shows such as: Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Once on This Island, Rent, Ain't Misbehavin, Smokey Joe's Cafe, as well as the 2015 Broadway revival and First National Tour of The Color Purple. Angela has also crossed over and declared herself a force to be reckoned with, appearing on television in a variety of shows including: Kevin Can Wait (CBS) and The Blindspot (NBC). In the fall of 2019, Angela will make her feature length debut in You Brought the Sunshine: The Story of the Clark Sisters (Lifetime) where she will tackle the role of Jacky Clark. Angela juggles a very busy performance schedule that includes time spent as a session singer for various artists and jingle companies. She also appears in NYC at a myriad of performance venues, including a weekly residency as host of “Lights out on Broadway” in Times Square. This curated open mic has featured a plethora of Broadway performers and recording artists and has become a NYC nightlife hot spot. For Angela, Sharing her gifts and talents is not about the destination, but the journey. Faith, Passion, and a burning desire to fully express herself whenever afforded the opportunity drive her discipline. Angela is committed to the lifelong pursuit of integrity and skill as an actor, warmth and honesty as a singer, humility as a seasoned performer, and she is loving every minute of it! It's Thursday, and time for another of theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck's weekly reviews of the Maryland stage. Today, she talks with Tom about Purlie, the 1970 Broadway musical hit that's getting a spirited revival at Arena Players, the oldest continually performing and historically African-American theater community in Baltimore. Set in the segregated, Jim Crow-era American South, Purlie tells the story of a charismatic traveling preacher named Purlie Victorious Judson, who returns to his small Georgia town in the hope of saving Big Bethel, the community's church, and free the indentured black cotton pickers who work on oppressive Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee's plantation. Purlie - which earned five Tony Awards, including for Best Musical, credits its book to veteran stage and screen actor Ossie Davis, Philip Rose and Peter Udell, with lyrics by Udell and music by Gary Geld. The musical was based closely on Davis's 1961 Broadway play, Purlie Victorious, which was adapted in 1963 into the film Gone Are the Days! The movie version featured many of the play's Broadway cast, including Davis, Ruby Dee, Alan Alda, Beah Richards, Godfrey Cambridge, and Sorrell Booke. Directed at Arena Players by Troy Burton, with musical direction by Tevin Brown, Purlie stars Antoine Williams in the title role, along with Stacey Saunders as Lutiebelle and Katrina Jones as Missy. The cast also includes Nate Couser, Xander Golden, Wanda Tyler, Lisa Wooten, Zolita Lester and Michael Barrett. Purlie continues through Sunday, March 1 at Arena Players Baltimore, located at 801 McCulloh St., Baltimore, Maryland 21201. Click here for ticket and location info. [Near the end of today's live theater review, news broke of the sentencing of former Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh. As he'd promised throughout the hour, Tom brought WYPR's courthouse reporter Emily Sullivan immediately on the line for a live update. We've left the audio of Emily's debriefer in place, beginning at 7:32 into the segment.]

Melba Moore http://www.melbamoore.com/ MELBA MOORE Is an American prolific 5 Octave singer and award winning actress. Broadway, Contemporary Soul/R&B, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Gospel and Classical Melba Moore was destined to be a Star! It could have been her Grammy-nominated cover of the Aretha Franklin classic "Lean On Me" or her Tony Award-winning performance as ‘LuttieBelle GussieMae Jenkins’ in Purlie that solidified her place in America's hearts, and when she became the first African-American woman to perform the role of Fantine in Les Misérables. “Music is what God allows me to do," declares Melba Moore. Born into a musical family, music chose Melba. “Music was a centerpiece in my family. My parents were musicians and so were many of my aunts and uncles." Melba’s father is the legendary big band leader Teddy Hill and her mother, Bonnie Davis, had a #1 hit on the R&B charts with the song “Don’t Stop Now." A graduate of the famed Arts High in Newark, Melba, at the encouragement of her parents went on to pursue music education at Montclair State, but her inner voice told her she had to see if she had the chops to make it as a performer. Melba’s stepfather (pianist Clement Moorman) introduced her to several agents which led to some studio work and eventually an audition that landed her a role in the cult classic Hair on Broadway in 1969. It was in Hair that Melba became the first African American woman to replace a white actress, who happened to be the acclaimed Diane Keaton, in a lead role on Broadway. One years later, she starred in Purlie, which earned her a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her portrayal as ‘Lutiebelle.’ At that time, Melba was one of the first Black women to win a Tony Award. Ms. Moore was the first female pop/R&B artist to do a non operatic solo concert at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House and at the Olympia in Paris. Melba was born to shine. Melba is better than ever, an elegant living legend, humanitarian, a star of stage, screen, and recordings, she's done it all and has done it beautifully. An American trend setter, she sets the bar high. She is currently in the planning stages of her return to Broadway and Television. She is a Grammy nominated vocalist; a film star (she was in films ‘All Dogs Go To Heaven,’ ‘The Fighting Temptations’ (Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Beyonce Knowles). Moore has a successful track record in Television with the Melba Moore Show, Melba Moore Clifton Davis Show, Falcon Crest, Ellis Island, she produced ‘Melba Moore Live’ concert for TV, she is also profiled in the docu-series on TV-One's acclaimed ‘Unsung.’ She scored a string of Billboard charted hits … 8 top 10 R&B hits including two #1 smash hits and 3 Grammy nominations, AMA Nominations; rewards received are Tony Award, Ellis Island Award, Artist Guild Award, Trumpet Award of Excellence, NAACP Spingarn Award, History Makers Tribute. In the 80s and 90s, Melba Moore gifted us with classic jams like “Lean On Me," “This Is It," “You Stepped Into My Life," "Love's Comin' At Ya," "Livin' For Your Love," "Falling" and "A Little Bit More" a #1 duet with Freddie Jackson. “With over 40 years in the industry, the singer and Broadway actress continues to create new music for fans to enjoy, and plans to release a new album this spring. In recent years, the resilient and always the renaissance woman, Moore’s recording projects have primarily been gospel albums, including the CD “Nobody But Jesus." In 2002, she released “I’m Still Here" and in 2010 she released “The Gift of Love," a duet album of classic songs and unforgettable originals. This multifaceted artist/philanthropist is always reaching deeper, pressing harder, ever challenging herself; keeping her audience on the edge of their seats, knowing that whatever happens next will be at least, as exciting as what happened before. Melba Moore’s produced version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing" which was entered into the United States Congressional Record as the official Negro National Anthem in 1990, was just named an ‘American Aural Treasure,’ by the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for Ms. Moore’s co-produced recorded rendition of the anthem.

Enjoy this 2013 ReEdited version of the classic remake "Just Call" by Bobby D'Ambrosio feat. Anthony Dixon. ReEdited by the production team of SM DPR Productions. Glendale, Arizona-born, Florida raised singer/songwriter Anthony Dixon has worked with many musical greats during his young career, and that training has prepared him for his own ascension as a solo singer. Dixon began singing as a child at the Southern Pentecostal church in which his family belonged. It was much later that he made a name for himself in musical circles with his emotive, theatrical tenor voice, working in support of artists such as Diana Ross, Jennifer Holliday, Cissy Houston and Melba Moore. He also fashioned a career in musical theatre, appearing in the revival of the musical Purlie with Moore as well as in stage productions of Chess and Ain't Misbehaving. In 2012 Dixon teamed up with Bobby D'Ambrosio and created a timeless classic with the remake of Sherrick's "Just Call".
