In this episode of Work in Progress, I'm joined by Ryan Rippel, the U.S. director of economic mobility and opportunity for Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to discuss how the Gates Foundation is addressing barriers to economic opportunity for vulnerable individuals Recently, the Gates Foundation announced more than $100 million dollars in new partnerships and investments in economic mobility with the mission of improving the lives of more than 50 million people experiencing poverty in the U.S. Rippel says the Gates Foundation uses "200% of the federal poverty line, not as the only measure, but as a really important one...to tell a story of who is facing some of the greatest vulnerability in the country." "It is disproportionately people of color, individuals who identify as female, but it's a population that is in every corner of our country," he adds. "It is in urban areas, it is in small towns and mid-sized towns. It is in rural areas. And so it is a challenge that is not isolated to any one community but is present in all of our communities and is therefore a challenge for all of us." The Gates Foundation's strategy to lift up this vulnerable population includes three pillars: making lives better now by focusing on the safety net and work opportunities, supporting small- and medium-sized businesses in creating good jobs, and working with local governments to prioritize economic mobility issues. Rippel goes into detail about the Foundation's recent investments and partnerships, which he says have the ultimate goal of creating momentum and tangible improvements in people's lives, while also fostering a movement to address economic mobility challenges in the long term. Rippel tells me, "There is no time to rest. This is a critical moment in the course of history for our country and my children and my generation and what's going to be true 10, 20, 30 years from now. We have to be at work at it in new ways, in bolder ways, and in more collaborative ways." Aprés 35 années passées à parcourir le monde pour Antenne 2 puis France 2, où il a couvert les guerres du Libéria, du Golfe, de Tchéchénie ou encore le siège de Sarajevo, Dominique Derda choisit de tourner la page : il quitte Jérusalem, son dernier poste de correspondant. Le grand reporter, figure de la télévision publique française veut "laisser la place aux jeunes". Au cours de sa carrière de grand reporter, Domique Derda a été à trois reprises correspondant à Moscou et pendant sept ans, correspondant en Afrique, basé à Dakar. Il a adoré ces deux parties du monde, aussi différentes soient-elle, parce qu'il y a une "humanité commune chez les Russes et chez les Africains". "Il est plus facile d'être un salaud qu'un héros" Au micro du podcast "au comptoir de l'info", le journaliste se remémore les moments forts de sa vie professionnelle. En particulier, au Libéria où il a vu des atrocités ou en Indonésie, lors du Tsunami où il a choisi d'aider un père en détresse. Dominique Derda rend également un hommage appuyé à Stéphane Frantz di Rippel, Yves Lambelin, Chellah Pandian et Raoul Adeossi, quatre hommes qui lui ont sauvé la vie en sacrifiant la leur, en avril 2011, au Novotel d'Abdijean. Et puisque le grand reporter est persuadé "qu'il est plus facile d'être un salaud qu'un héros", il se demande ce qu'il aurait fait à leur place. "C'est bien plus fort que toutes les guerres" Bien qu'il ait passé la majorité de sa vie professionnelle à l'étranger et bien souvent à couvrir des conflits, c'est en France que Dominique Derda a fait le reportage qui l'a le plus ému. Dans un Ehpad prés de Périgueux, il a, avec le caméraman Jean-Marie Lequertier, rencontré des couples dont l'un était atteint de la maladie d'Alzheimer. Pour l'émission "13 h 15", il ont montré comment il est possible de continuer à aimer quelqu'un qui ne souvient plus de vous. Episode 48 Annie Rippel In April, 1997, the body of Annie Rippel was discovered along a creek in Alexander, NY. Since the location was miles from Annie's home and Annie didn't drive or have a car, it led to questions. Annie apparently had drowned, but the creek was only a couple inches deep, and Annie had duct tape around her neck. DNA from an unknown person was collected into evidence but has not been identified as of yet. Since Annie had a history of substance abuse, some believe her death is related to that lifestyle. But her family wants to know the truth about what exactly happened to Annie. She currently serves on the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health Board of Trustees and is a board member of Grantmakers in Health. Laura received her undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She received her MBA from New York University, and is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. To support collaborative solutions, four key areas require focused attention: (1) creating a sound strategy, (2) clarifying values among stakeholders, (3) broadening stewardship across silos, and (4) creating sources of sustainable financing. Engaging with the ecosystem involves continued learning, comfort with change, and thinking about what's possible. Collaboration is an indispensable technique to solve the tough problems facing population health today such as the mental health national crisis, affordability, and availability of pharmacy and specialty drugs. Embodying mission, vision, and values based on a global concept of health and a better world is about actively living those values when approaching daily work. Health ecosystem leadership must reflect the communities we serve and be centered around the individual with a focus on team-based, whole-person centered care.

Observations from the podcast: - A lot of speculative cash has moved into agri land - We have seen a real decoupling of productive value and the farmland price - Buying land is out of the question for most farmers - Farmland is mostly bought by financial institutions - Financial Institutions only look at the highest lease (which is usually the least sustainable farmer as he or she is not paying for all the externalities they produce. Because they mine the soil. - 80% of the classmates of Thomas at the biodynamic (4,5 year study) couldn’t find land afterwards - Regenerative farmers, who are good stewards of the land, can’t make those cashflows (especially at the beginning) to pay back the loans.
