Needless to say, the Walt Disney Company has become one of the largest single business entities, in the world of media at least, that have ever existed, crawling their way up from two brothers and an easel to a global land development and merchandise producer. no matter how big a company like Disney gets though, there are still some very important lessons even single-operator small businesses can take away from the monopolistic House of Mouse. Take for instance the way they treat and interact with their customers, who they call anything but the overly transactional term “customers”, bringing them into a larger cultural identity as Disney consumers, with all the auspices of magic and wonder they can muster. While this may seem like patronizing your patrons, pretending they're more than just people buying an item or service your selling, many industry experts and insiders, like Omnisend CEO Rytis Lauris, view this re-associative labelling as all important to not just defining your brands relationship with its clients and consumers, but as well re-enforcing that specific approach to relationships in the minds of you and your staff. To Rytis, customers, who he calls “investors”, are the true focus of any business. A product without a buyer is still a product, unchanged and inactive, but a buyer without a product is anything but, capable of a great deal of change and activity to achieve their goals, acting in anyway from starting their own business to fill a void in the market, to inventing an alternative, shopping at a competitor, or outright stealing a desired product. Losing track of the importance of your consumers to you, losing focus on empathy, and making sure your customers get a higher value experience out of your store than just being able to buy an item, is the difference between being a faceless supplier and being a brand people are proud and excited to shop at, and how you consider them should reflect this close relationship, trust and reliance. For e-commerce businesses, the previous year's global crisis has been both a blessing and curse. While the industry exploded in terms of size and sales, reaching heights not expected for another decade, this sudden rise to the forefront of the market has lead to a lot of unexpected stress for some operators. “At the very beginning of Covid and the lock downs, there was a lot of uncertainty” explained Rytis. “We saw some of our customers going out of business or having layoffs, and we had those questions and concerns raised by our team members as well”.  Rather than allowing worry, uncertainty and fear take hold, Rytis and Omnisend doubled down on believing in the community of customers they had built, on the strength of their relationships with clients, and on helping to keep them afloat to help keep Omnisend successful. Investing in empathy, says Rytis, is the true difference between making it and breaking it for many businesses, especially those that have a proven track record and should be wildly profitable in good times. Downturns happen, be it personally, in your business, or on a global scale, and we all of us always remember who was there in the hard and lean times, and who wasn't. Being considerate of a customer's needs at their time of need, can win you a valued partner for years to come when they're back on their feet, or rob you of long term investment in disdainful protest of your negligence. Put your customer at the centre of your business, focus everything you do around best serving them and their needs, and they will not only remain with you through thick and thin, but will spread the word about your brand and help you reach even higher, loftier goals of your own. With over a decade of experience building and boostrapping successful startups in e-commerce, I wanted to have Rytis on to discuss the importance and future of marketing coming out of the Wuhan Coronavirus quarantine and how important it is for you to understand the different ways you need to market to stand out. www.omnisend.com Rytis Lauris on LinkedIn Rytis graduated with a degree in political science and no experience in technology or marketing. When he was 21, a friend ask him to help with a business he was starting. He had no experience but figured it out and made it work. He never looked back and has been an entrepreneur ever since with a number of businesses. He got into digital marketing (which Onmisend was born from) and had success, but while running that business, started a few others that didn’t work out. One was a postcard business and the other was a polling tool for presenters on stage at conferences and events. He learned a major lesson in that every business has to solve a real problem. The two failures were “nice to have” products, but not necessities. “You have to find a monetizable customer pain/problem to solve. That is the only way to build a proper business.” What is Onmichannel marketing? It is a way to communicate with a customer based through multiple mediums at once including email, text, chat, messenger, push notification, Facebook/Google/social ads and retargeting. It is one tool where you can market through all channels at lunch. It can be customized to communicate across the different mediums at different times and different ways to customers during their lifecycle. You need a way to meet customers where they are – and nowadays that is in a number of channels. At the 12 min mark, Rytis talks about Omnichannel in action with examples… Marketing needs to follow the same path in how buyers behave and each customer will have different preferences and behavior. What works best for a B2B and for a B2C strategy with Omnichannel? Most of the work Rytis does is with B2C and mainly physical goods. Omnichannel works better for B2C. B2B doesn’t typically buy through things like Facebook Messenger and typically has a more formal process and decision-making process. It does depend on what the product is as some B2B products may make sense for Omnichannel. The consumer channel is the bigger opportunity for Omnichannel. Omnichannel can work for informational type products or services as well for B2C. It is especially good for things sold online as it can track everything. Are there any changes or shifts you see happening or coming because of the virus? Massive change that will make a major impact for the future – almost all businesses are transforming to a digital presence by nature. Consumers have all gone digital and expect it, so your business has to accommodate it. In harder times, businesses turn to selling into their customer base instead of investing to get new customers. This can work as it is a warm market, but they have to be careful not to sacrifice the future and keep a focus on gaining new clients. Amazon? Friend or Foe? Should it be a part of an Omnichannel strategy? It’s a tricky question, but ultimately, the answer is yes. Everyone should have Amazon as a part of their strategy, but not rely on it solely. It is easier to start on Amazon. It has the traffic and the platform and the tools you need to get going. Once you are going, you need to be building your own brand, own platform, and owning the customer journey. What is the difference between a Omnisend type solution and a Hubspot type? Hubspot is more for B2B needs, Onmisend is built more for B2C. Hubspot and other tools like it are more CRM and drip campaign type tools. Omnisend has order follow up sequences, synchronizing with your online store, etc. Hubspot does not. They are really completely different types of solutions and focuses. If you had to give one of your best pieces of advice, outside or Omnichannel, for entrepreneurs to market their business, what would it be? Be consistent. Deliver what you promise. Respect your customers and they will respect you. Marketers and businesses need to think in terms of campaigns and lifetime values of customers. It needs to be about what customer want to hear from you, not what you want to say to them. How important can the little things be such as reviews online, etc? Very important! Social proof and reviews are critical for selling online and validating your products/services. You customer feedback is gold and must be listened to. Another little thing is keeping people informed and up to date. What has surprised you most on your entrepreneur journey? Rytis never thought of himself as a creative person, but entrepreneurship brings that out in him and has made a large impact on his success. The 80/20 rule is real. 20% of the effort drives 80% of the results. Stay true to this. What is your best advice for an entrepreneur starting out? Just do it. Whatever it takes – find a way and make a way. And there is no better day to start than today. Plan on the move… ​ Anything else you want to share? The SMS Click rate of 14% 600% higher order rate than email campaigns 21% more via SMS campaigns The open rate is very high as long as there is a higher level of intimacy But it is more challenging to get permission You need to promise not to spam them It is very easy to unsubscribe now Usually, people who have subscribed via SMS How do you ascribe value to a multi channel platform? SMS tends to be the inner circle of your brand advocates. The list will be much smaller compared to email. So use SMS to communicate with your best customers. You can go further and connect your SMS with your support chat if you have SMS support. Email lists - second circle  Existing customers Those just visited Facebook or Google ads - "the third circle” The point of the list Why is it important to have a multi channel platform organised together? Usually, organisations use 5 different tools to run marketing via 5 different channels. If you start 5 different camp's via Email SMS Messenger FaceBook ads etc. You start flooding customers with messages So it's really important to put all customers How do we go from pretty much manual selling to automate? If you have 100,000s of customers, you have to have an automated system. In some channels, you can have two-way communications, Eg messenger Eg2 customer support Trigger-based brings things closer to a personalised experience Personalisation and relevance are really important. So it's worth the effort. Starting points Approach 1 - add one channel a=t a time Start with say, take your email campaign and add a one-second channel. Then add a third channel, analysis it, play with it, test it, Approach 2- Marketing Channel Strategy Combos for specific purposes Eg SMS is a great primary channel for order followup Have a clear picture of the customer journey Which moment? How do we get a clear picture of the customer journey? We need to analyse our own customer data. Initially, you need to get a single customer view that is very clear. Pick some customers and analyse them one by one Then based on your insights, build segments You should be able to communicate in different ways as needed Promotional messages Transactional messages The classic customer journey Most start by visiting websites  - so retention marketing starts there. The first goal is to convert them to a subscriber. The second stage is to convert subscribers or those showing intent to buyers. The next stage is to convert from a buyer to a repeat buyer. It IS still the most effective channel. But we should augment that.  We should broaden our definition of “subscriber” as a consumer who gave us permission to communicate with them regularly.  Allowing customers to choose the most preferred channels is important.  However, email has and will survive.  Omnisend started 6 years ago and it was just an email service provider.  The venture capitalists struggled to.  Omni Channel Data through Personalised messaging  -what is it?  Based on simple personal data eg name, city.  More important is to personalise the messages and automating the data from the online store or the data you get from the customer's Behaviour.  It's based on triggers which initiate an auto campaign Eg if someone is looking at a specific category based on their browsing.  So you can provide automated campaigns related to that.  It's not about demographics - may be the same person will be wanting a scarf in 3 months.  What are the mechanics of that process?  Shopify and Omnisend - connect Shopify with a marketing automation tool Build an initial profile based on past transactions When was last transaction  When was the age shopping cart Do front end Excel tracking customer's data based on their permission. So the content of the newsletter is often not related to that so there is room for improvement  What to do in response? Start an automated campaign… send an email, maybe 2 emails (most cost-effective  If no transaction, continue to send Maybe messenger  Maybe WhatsApp  If nothing happens, push the data to Google and Facebook ads Depends on which communication channel you have permission for  SMS may be the initial channel.  What is the value of SMS compared to email? SMS is very effective but costs a little more than email Gathering Multiple Permissions You can get a form and ask for permission via various channels Then your customer can tick the boxes they prefer Then it can be more contextual:  A traditional popup, which is still very effective (which converts a lot of visitor to sub) can be emailed only On the checkout box, you can have a checkbox for the perm to get SMS You already have a relationship with the store then.  On product page when OOS - would you like to sub via messenger and we can update you when back in stock.  Sub via push notifications, we'll give you a code for free delivery, etc.  Why use it for e-commerce?
