In 2016, Trump claimed victory in Arizona, but in 2020, Biden narrowly won by a razor-thin margin of 11,000 votes. This episode explores the diverse perspectives within the "Latino vote" and questions the existence of a cohesive voting bloc. Our focus centers on Arizona's Senate race, featuring Ruben Gallego, a Latino war veteran and Democrat, against Kari Lake, a Republican known for her hard-right views and election denialism. This pivotal contest unfolds against the backdrop of recent legislative actions, including the state's repeal of its abortion ban and SB1070, a controversial anti-immigrant "show me your papers" law. In Arizona's evolving political landscape, this episode examines the changing dynamics of the Latino vote and its impact on critical issues such as abortion and immigration. Join co-hosts Karina Dominguez and Carlos Yañez for a special episode where they remember SB1070 as Florida passed SB1718. This horrible bill will further criminalize immigrant communities. They are joined by Nery, an immigrant rights advocate and coordinator with the FL student power network, a youth organization serving students across Florida to advocate for education, climate and migrant justice. Nery is a FIU alumni and is heavily involved in immigrant community work with youth. The Florida legislature has failed to protect immigrants and Florida immigrant youth will not stay silent. We hope our immigrant communities across the country see the realities and parallels that immigrants face daily.

As a traditionally Republican state, Arizona hadn't seen a Democratic presidential candidate win since 1996. But then, in 2020, the state became a battleground. Voters chose Joe Biden over Donald Trump with a difference of just 10,000 votes. Much of that shift in politics is attributed to a grassroots progressive movement of young Latinos and Latinas, who mobilized hundreds of thousands of new voters to the polls in the 2020 election. This movement was built from the ground up more than ten years ago, initially in response to Arizona's racist anti-immigration law SB1070. But now, at a moment when the movement should be riding the high of their recent victory, its members are facing a challenging upcoming midterm election. On this episode of Latino USA, we travel to urban and rural parts of Arizona to follow three progressive organizers facing an increasingly popular far-right movement of Trump-endorsed candidates—and their fight to expand voting access in the state.
Emma hosts Hahrie Han, director of the SNF Agora Institute and Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss her recent book Prisms of the People: Power & Organizing in Twenty-First-Century America, that she co-authored with Elizabeth McKenna and Michelle Oyakawa. Hahrie situates her relationship with organizing, starting as a child of Korean immigrants in Texas, growing as she became involved in student activism, and eventually being juxtaposed with the electoral work she put in on campaigns in the 90s. Emma and her jump into the importance of self-determination, walking through her first-hand experiences in fights against SB1070, Prop 206, and even a fight for higher minimum wages in Arizona, and looking at the importance of having short terms goals in building towards a larger-scale project. They wrap up the interview reflecting on why recent movement campaigns have failed to capitalize on lingering inspiration, and explore the case study of the activism that got us prohibition. Emma wraps up the first half by discussing Sam's vacation and touching on Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Milley's response to the media fulling buying into US intelligence's clamor for continued power in the Middle East. And in the Fun Half: The MR crew are joined by Brandon Sutton as always, to discuss sick day tactics, and Dave from Jamaica gives his own input to inspire Brandon to go full Foucault. Next, they jump into the Islamophobic fear-mongering around refugee acceptance, from Stinchfields and Hannitys to Bill Mahers and Sam Harrises, Alex from NY returns with two fun fueled matchups, before Brian from AZ engages with Bill Maher's religion takes, and reflects on the 9/11 attackers calling him devil by name (??). They also cover some of Bill O'Reilly's takes on American Marxism (aka Disney going woke) and Dinesh D'Souza gives credit to the Taliban where it's due, plus, your calls and IMs! On May 30, 2009 Raul Flores and his 9 year old daughter Brisenia were murdered in their home just north of the Mexican border. A resident of Washington State and a leader of the Minutemen American Defense group Shawna Forde and two accomplices was convicted of the murders. These tragedies lead to the ending of volunteer border watchers and lead then Governor Jan Brewer to sign SB1070 into law. It relates to how this group continues to be socially lynched in the media today and feeds people 'believed to be' illegal immigrants into the industrial complex via immigration facilities (private prisons for alleged immigrants). Season two of Rediscovering, a podcast from The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, explored the events leading up to and following the passage of Senate Bill 1070 in Arizona. The 2010 “show me your papers” law was met with pushback from Latino organizers, grassroots activists, DACA recipients and more. That pushback didn’t end after SB 1070 was signed. Latino activists continued to organize. They pushed for voter registration. They rallied around local candidates. They helped elect Democrats like Sheriff Paul Penzone and Krysten Sinema. Now, the 2020 election has come and gone. For the first time since 1996, Arizona voted for a Democrat for president. Joe Biden’s narrow victory was the work of multiple voting blocs and a confluence of events that made for an unforgettable year and an election cycle that will be looked back on for decades to come. In the immediate aftermath, we wanted to revisit some of the voices you heard in Rediscovering. In this epilogue, we’re bringing together two people from our show to discuss SB 1070’s effect on the election: Tony Valdovinos and Chuck Coughlin. Valdovinos is a Democratic organizer and DACA recipient who was called to action by SB 1070. In 2010, Chuck was an adviser to Republican Governor Jan Brewer.

In Rediscovering: SB 1070, The Arizona Republic traces the origin of Arizona Senate Bill 1070, the state law that required police to ask for proof of legal status from anyone they thought might be in the country illegally. When the law was passed in 2010, it was the broadest and most strict anti-illegal immigration measure passed in the United States. Opponents of SB 1070 called it the “show me your papers” law. The team at The Arizona Republic talked to the state's former governor Jan Brewer and other lawmakers, as well as immigrant activists and young Latinos whose lives were forever impacted by the legislation. Along the way, they explain what led up to the law being passed law was passed, and why it still matters a decade later. Arizona is a battleground state in national elections and could sway the outcome of the 2020 presidential race. But how did we get here? How did the state go from reliably red to purple, with the possibility to shift blue in 2020, in just a decade? To understand, go back to 2010 when Arizona surprised the nation by passing Senate Bill 1070, a sweeping and highly controversial immigration law, otherwise known as the "show me your papers" law. That's what Valley 101's sister podcast will explore in season two of Rediscovering. The five-part series will examine what led to the bill, what its proponents sought to do, how the community and nation reacted, and how its effects linger still today. This week on Valley 101, host Kaila White will speak to the hosts of Rediscovering: SB 1070, The Arizona Republic's national political reporters Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Ronald J. Hansen. They also host our political podcast, The Gaggle. They'll take you behind the scenes for a sneak peak of what to expect in the new series.
In April 2010, Arizona enacted the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, better known as Senate Bill 1070. The state law required police officers to inquire about the legal status of anyone they thought might be in the country illegally. But what would make an officer think someone was in the country illegally? To its opponents, it codified and provided legal cover for racial profiling, something that continues to be an issue. To its supporters, SB1070 tackled the issue of illegal immigration in a way that Washington would not. The law was a state-level response to a national issue that had stalled in Congress. It sought to break the federal log jam and show the nation that if Congress wouldn't tackle immigration reform, Arizona would. Ten years later, the law played a role in reducing the size of the state’s undocumented population and unquestionably reshaped Arizona politics. It also may have influenced the political rise of President Donald Trump. In this season of Rediscovering, we'll retrace the history of SB1070: how it happened, who advocated for it and why it still matters a decade later. We’ll speak to former Governor Jan Brewer, SB1070 architect Russell Pearce, Arizona’s senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema, and young Latino and immigrant activists whose lives were forever shaped by the legislation. This is Rediscovering: SB1070 for The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com. All five episodes drop on Wednesday, July 15. Don't miss a single one. Instead, less than 24 hours after President Donald Trump left Phoenix, the measure was dead. What happened? What does this mean for immigration policy in the state? Tim Donnelly Biography Tim Donnelly is a former California State Assemblyman—serving 2 terms and was a candidate for California Governor in 2014—coming in 3rd (winning almost 650K votes). As a former Minuteman leader in California, Tim is one of the foremost authorities on illegal immigration in the country. In 2010, Tim introduced a law similar to Arizona’s SB1070 law in California, ending sanctuary cities, increasing penalties for human trafficking of minors, requiring all employers to use e-verify, but in doing so, granting them protection from nuisance lawsuits, and requiring the enforcement of all immigration laws by state and local governments. In 2013, he led the charge to get Child Protective Services (CPS) audited after CPS in Sacramento County kidnapped a child because the mother wanted a 2nd medical opinion. That same year, Tim's bill AB351, the California Liberty Preservation Act of 2013, which nullifies the NDAA in California, was signed into law. Tim has been a staunch defender of our Civil Liberties, and there is no stronger advocate of the 2nd Amendment in California. In 2014, Tim led the charge in California to secure the release of Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, including organizing a massive protest targeting the Mexican President when he came to Sacramento. The protest forced both Gov. Brown and President Nieto to acknowledge Sgt. Tahmooressi’s plight. Two months later, our Marine was released. On July 1st, 2015, Tim filed a referendum to repeal SB277—a bill that forces every school-aged child to receive all vaccinations on the schedule, or lose the right to attend a public or a private school in California. In spite of the very abbreviated timeline prescribed in state law to undo the damage they do to our natural rights, Tim organized thousands of volunteers, but fell short of the 366K signatures required, collecting 233K. In the end, the referendum served an important purpose in educating hundreds of thousands of Californians who were unaware, and gave a burgeoning, albeit disjointed movement time to grow and become more organized and connected. In 2016, Tim is featured in an important documentary on gun control. "Targeted--Exposing the Gun Control Agenda", which was shown in theaters across the nation, has just been released on DVD.

Bio Luis Avila (@phoenikera) is the President and Founder of Iconico Campaigns, a company that works to build advocacy capacity in organizations around the country. Migrating in 2000 from Mexico, Luis stayed in the U.S. to attend college, where he developed projects with people involved in arts, politics and social justice. In 2004, Luis learned about civic participation in Jackson, Mississippi, as part of the American Freedom Summer program. He collaborated with organizers and leaders to advocate for the DREAM Act, fight against SB1070 and challenge Sheriff Joe Arpaio's discriminatory practices in Arizona. In 2008, Luis joined the Obama campaign where he got insight on cornerstone aspects of electoral organizing. This knowledge, paired with technologies developed to boost volunteer engagement, is applied now in all his advocacy and community engagement work. Luis spearheaded Somos América in 2011, the largest immigrant-rights coalition in Arizona, and currently sits on the Boards of Advisors of the National Council for La Raza and The New Teacher Project, an organization working to end education inequality. A long-time family and community engagement expert, Luis has designed engagement models for domestic and international organizations and school systems. In 2016, he served as Nevada's Democratic Coordinated Campaign Field Director, contributing to major victories in the state legislature, electing the first Latina Senator and delivering the state to Hillary Clinton, and he’s currently launching Instituto, an organization to build political infrastructure in communities of color in Arizona. The companies say if the merger’s approved they’ll have 5G built out to the entire country in 6 years. Sprint says they’ll also sell prepaid wireless company Boost mobile. FCC Chair Ajit Pai says the merger conditions the companies are proposing are adequate and said he’d approve the deal. The two other Republicans on the Commission signaled their support as well giving the deal the majority it needs at the FCC. Tough week for Huawei Chinese device manufacturer Huawei had a tough week last week as President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that bans American telecom companies from installing foreign-made equipment that could pose a national security threat. American officials have accused the company of violating an American trade embargo against Iran and with assisting China with spying on U.S. companies. Since Trump issued the order, Google parent Alphabet has suspended doing business with Huawei, outside of what’s available via open source, by revoking the Android licensing deal the tech giant had with Huawei. President Trump creates story database to collect stories of conservatives being censored on social media Looks like the White House wants to set up its own social network to compete with Twitter and Facebook. The White House has created a creepy new database that lets conservatives report instances in which they’ve been censored on social media platforms. The President is attempting to get users to opt-in to a separate White House newsletter that purports to allow anyone, irrespective of their political views, to receive updates without relying on Facebook and Twitter. The White House also decided not to sign on to a multinational campaign created by Christchurch, New Zealand to stamp out online hate speech. The White House says the effort would dilute the freedom of speech. 18 other countries, including many of America’s allies, disagreed. Welcome Belén Sisa, immigration activist, Bernie 2016 campaign alum, and member of the #Dream7 to the Immigration MIC podcast! Belen was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina - her family moved to the US right before the collapse of the Argentinean economy in 2001 to Arizona during the construction boom years. Because she and her family were “white passing”, they fit in in their middle class white neighborhood and were able to keep their undocumented status hidden. She talks about how later on, her family buying a house in a different neighborhood near a detention center, and living in a conservative community exposed those differences. She talks about living a double life - being the Homecoming Queen, a varsity cheerleader, and a bright student, while living in fear in the years of SB1070, her family nearly ending up homeless and how graduation felt like the end of her escape from those harsh realities. She talks about her experiences in becoming involved and empowered in immigration activist with the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, and how her involvement led to longtime close friends separating themselves from her, but finding community in “belonging to her people”. Her decision to be a part of the Dream 7 jail strike, and in depth describes the “traumatizing” experience, which involved cold temperatures, police brutality, inhumane conditions, and the faith they placed in everyone fighting for a Clean Dream Act, the psychological effects of the experience, and the inspiration that followed. Her experience working with the Bernie Sanders 2016 campaign, a “life changing experience, working as a field organizer in Nevada, Arizona, Rhode Island, California, and later on becoming part of the Latino Outreach team. She talks about the skills and networks she gained, and the opportunity to be a page at the DNC as an undocumented woman. We talk about the outcome of election night, her reaction, and how it led to her viral moment, taking a picture with her tax returns and tagging the president in it, because she wanted the real story to be told, which led to 1000’s of shares, a lot of hate mail, threats, but overall, the support she received, the national conversation it sparked, and how she became even more “unafraid”. We end talking about the “unusual” political moment, her message of unity coming out of the 2016 elections, how she’s seeing the 2020 elections take shape, and the importance of mobilizing to win back the White House. “Do the right thing and don’t be afraid to speak up”, — words of encouragement from Belen talking about her moments of personal growth, and how personal stories can move us forward, and her hopes that she can inspire others to have an impact.
Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 36, originally published in November 2010. Jason Hartman talks with Steve Kates (aka “Dr. Sky”) who, with his brother Joe, are active with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in the Special Forces Unit and help to fight crime in the sixth largest metro area in the nation. He has been engaged in the science of Astronomy for well over thirty years. His first true observations occurred while just seven years old, viewing the moon and planets in a ten dollar telescope. The first real event he saw, was the 1966 Leonid meteor shower from his home in New York City, atop a tall building. This encouraged him to make the SKY his passion and has been so ever since. Starting in film and television and at a young age, Steve Kates has worked in many acting and model roles for major studios and had some roles in TV commercials of the 1960's, through his agent. While a native of New York City, Steve Kates moved to the suburbs of New Jersey in 1967 and found the night sky once again. Having formed the Hackensack Astronomy Club, he and his friends did lots of research on the night sky and were regular contributors to the popular magazine, “Sky and Telescope”, specializing in Lunar / Solar observations and Meteor Astronomy. On this Immigration MIC episode we have Genesis speaking to us about her personal story/experiences from Arizona! Genesis’ older brother was an organizer for the initial DREAM Act - her story is unconventional, given that since she was 10, she had always wanted to pursue a career in law, and after her brother was mistreated at the hands of police officers, Genesis decided to become involved fully in the immigration movement. She opens up about having been discouraged in high school, letting her grades drop, but the passage of DACA being a turning point in helping her return to school, and continue pursuing her education. Her work in Arizona along other activists is applauded nationally as ‘veterans of the movement’ because of laws like SB1070, - she talks to us about the ousting of Joe Arpaio, what the moment meant, and what it was like as they also were dealing with the news of Trump’s election. She also celebrates seeing her counterparts running for office and getting elected in local AZ communities. The current political landscape - we discuss arguments between activists, what realistic expectations are for reform/relief, and her personal words for encouragement for people stepping forward in recent times. Karina from the AZ Dream Act coalition makes a special appearance (pretty awesome!) and calls for undocumented parents to one day receive similar relief to DACA. Thank you Genesis for being so positive, grounded, and being willing to share with us your experiences - and thankful you find the strength everyday to continue pushing for immigration reform!
Rays Talk Show Episode 255: Host Ray Collazo shares what President Trump’s pardon for former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio means for our politics and our souls. Collazo is joined by Arizona activist and artist James Garcia to discuss the local reaction to the latest insult to the Latino community and American Civil Rights. Garcia shares the historical battle against Arpaio’s reign of terror that led to this historic moment. James Garcia explains how this sort of struggle led to the production of his latest Play “1070: We Were Strangers Once.” Garcia discusses how the journey of one family typifies the experience of Latinos during the passage and aftermath of SB1070 in Arizona over recent years. Collazo, Garcia and everyone in the Rays Talk Show family send their prayers and best wishes to the families impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Please subscribe to Rays Talk Show on iTunes or Soundcloud or visit our website for all of our content.
Fresh off of finishing an educational gathering for local community members on the current political state of Arizona, Reyna and Korina are determined to continue fighting the fight in AZ that has spanned more than 25 years against discriminatory immigration laws! Reyna shares her experience sharing her story for the 1st time ever at a Republican fundraiser (woah!) - and her path to becoming Executive Director of Aliento, and her focus on leadership development in the AZ community. Korina talks about her experiences being involved in fighting Joe Arpaio's policies, and the need she felt to become involved in organizing after having been inactive - and the moment she realized she needed to fight back. Her words - "There's no political party, when your life is on the line" - so many chills. We talk about the SB1070 laws and the connection to former Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy's policies, the underestimation from activists in a possible Trump win, as well as the significance of the Obama deportation raids (Reyna camped outside of the WH for a month.)
Our latest LIVE show: the latest about Miss Puerto Rico Destiny Vélez, who was suspended indefinitely for anti-Muslim tweets, how the city of Phoenix is shedding its SB1070 past and we talk with Mi Jente!
If you can't banish people outright, then you can try to erase them from students' minds. That's exactly what happened in Tucson Unified School District in Arizona, when conservatives ipassed an anti-immigrant racial profiling law, SB1070 that in effect targeted Latinos. At the same time, right-wing activists succeeded in passing a law banning the teeaching of Mexican American Studies, saying that a highly successful TUSD program that taught Chicano/Latiino history and culture to all students in the largely Hispanic district was instead harmful and divisive. The law, HB 2281, bans instruction that encourages "ethnic solidarity" among other things. Mind you, to begin with the ethnic studies courses were part of a federal court order to address historic and systemic racism in Arizona's education system. The outrage over free speech rights of teachers and students is what prompted writer and teacher Tony Diaz to "smuggle" books by Latino authors out of his home state of Texas and into Arizona. He has been reporting on and organizing the efforts of free speech activists, ethnic studies activists, and students and teachers fighting for a relevant curriculum ever since. TUSD high school student Maya Arce is a plaintiff who filed in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to overtun this Arizona law on grounds that it's unconstitutional. On January 12, 2015, she will testify and urge the Ninth Circuit to protect her First Amendment rights and the rights of other Arizona students and overturn this ignorant, bigoted, and narrow-minded law. Background, go here. More on Tony Diaz here and Librotraficante here.

Two recent Supreme Court decisions seem to send conflicting messages about state and local laws regulating noncitizens. In one case, the justices upheld Arizona’s law imposing sanctions on employers who hire undocumented workers. But another ruling struck down a law that allowed for racial profiling of suspected illegal immigrants. UC Davis Law Professor Gabriel Chin sorts through the legal contradictions to find the right balance between state and federal governments. Chin is the featured speaker of the 2013 DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture, sponsored by Cal Western School of Law and UC San Diego. Sermon delivered on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at All Souls by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. With the recent Supreme Court ruling on Arizona’s SB1070 and President Obama’s executive action on young immigrants, the national debate is intensifying. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas’s definition of an American is, “Anyone who works hard, who’s proud of his country and wants to contribute; who’s not a burden on anyone.” Rev. Kelvin Sauls, writing for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, states, “A human rights framework must be foundational to the development of immigration policy nationally.” Members of our congregation have formed the All Souls Alliance for Just Immigration, or ASAJI, and are committed to continue learning about global patterns of migration, emigration, and immigration. What is your definition of a real American? And why? Listen to this sermon and consider what it means to be an American citizen. SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST! Arizona's SB 1070 put immigration enforcement in the national spotlight. Soon after Arizona proposed the broadest and strictest immigration law in the country, activists organized mass protests and at least five other states began the process to adopt similar laws. A judge has stopped portions of 1070—for now. But the legal and ideological battles continue. On this edition, we look at SB 1070 – the law, its intentions and effects, and how its motivated immigrant communities to become politically active. It's a busy Wednesday night on the show. We started with Congressman Raul Grijalva talking abt SB1070 which was gutted by a district court judge today. Followed up with a groups still boycotting the AZ Diamondbacks and urging MLB to move the 2011 All Stars Game from AZ. Jeanne Devon from The Mudflats spoke about Sarah Palin a year after she quit being Governor of Alaska. Brent Budowsky sounded off against the Democrats in power, and Jason Leopold of Truthout spoke about the war supplemental bill.
My feelings about SB1070. Should student of a college be expelled for their beliefs and why? What can Gay Men teach women? Music by Lexie Shine
Travis Morales, Revolution Newspaper, on the completely inhumane, illegitimate and fascist Arizona law SB1070 - What's the big picture? What's behind it? And the need for massive opposition to stop it. Georgianna Williams, resident of South Central LA on the need to stand with immigrants. Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, on "Why Do People Come Here From All Over the World?" Rafael Kadaris on the Arizona Freedom Summer and building massive opposition to stop SB1070.
Sports writer Dave Zirin tells the story of how the Phoenix Suns basketball team took a stand against their state's anti-immigrant bill SB1070. He says athletes, too, can be revolutionaries.

The federal government versus Arizona on who will enforce the immigration laws. What's been a hot topic in the news, there hasn't been too much discussion about the consequences of what will happen depending on who wins the battle. Additionally, why is the federal government so upset at Arizona for passing local legislation to enforce federal laws? Could it be the federal government has other plans of its own? Clif and Robin will discuss this topic and more today on Oregon update. NOTE: four minutes of silence at the beginning of the program -- operator error :-)

Arizona has passed a law cracking down on illegal immigrants -- the toughest of its kind in the US. It allows police officers to check the immigration status of anyone they stop or detain, if there's a suspicion that the person is in America illegally. Driving it is frustration both at Arizona's role as the main hub for illegal entry into America, and the organised cross border crime that's come with it. Many support the law. But there is anger and fear among the Latino community: Legal citizens say they will be targeted by police just because of their skin. For Assignment Rob Walker travels to Arizona to explore why immigration has become such a hot political issue in the state.
In the eleventh episode (and second season opener), Todd and his panelists anarchist/individualist bloggerJessica Geary and former Boston Tea Party chairman and libertarian/propertarian Jim Davidson discussed the events that took place at Libertarian National Convention in St. Louis, the LNC National Committee election, an altercation between the American Open Currency Standard (AOCS) and libertarian/propertarian Jim Davidson, Wayne Allyn Root's stooges and LNC political hacks threatening talk radio show host Corey Moore because of his LP convention news coverage, the BTP convention highlights including the appeal of the membership against the run-off At-Large election, and the BP oil spill and the media fall-out that followed.[Note: Jason Jewell and David F. Nolan did not show up for tonight's show so there were only two panelists in lieu of four. Topics such as Arizona's S.B. 1070 law, Elena Kagan's position on religious freedom and immigration, and Obama's $30 billion jobs bill were not covered, but that's fine. They may or may not be covered at a later time. Other than that, tonight's season premiere was great.]
