In this Onward Podcast episode, Deborah Edwards shares how she navigated life and a loved one’s addiction. Furthermore, Deborah’s book High: A Story of Addiction, Awareness and Ascension, explores her journey involving the harrowing navigation of her teenaged son’s heroin addiction--an addiction that arrived on the heels of death, divorce, bankruptcy, and an overall questioning of her purpose. Also, Emily shares her similar journey in this eye-opening and thought-provoking interview. Ultimately, Deborah learned that loving another through their addiction is based in the practice of presence, holding boundaries with belief, and patient love. An award-winning corporate development expert, Deborah has experience as an entrepreneur, business owner, Sales AVP, Division Manager for an MGA, and more. Now, as a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, Points of You Certified Expert and award-winning speaker, Deborah helps her clients harness their strengths, celebrate their uniqueness, and develop their innate leadership abilities to improve professional success and promote personal growth. Episode Highlights: First, Emily introduces Deborah. Then Emily shares that she and Deborah have been through similar, difficult circumstances with their sons. Next, Deborah talks about the importance of addressing mental health issues. People will use substances to subdue their feelings and emotions. Deborah talks about her book High: A Story of Addiction, Awareness and Ascension. She takes the reader through the experience of realizing her son was addicted to heroin and navigating the process. Her son, Andrew is 5.5 years in sobriety. Also, she wrote the book to give hope to the person in the thick of it and to encourage others to see that it's OK to continue to live your life while your loved one is on their own journey. There are different ends to this all too familiar experience and Emily and Deborah are fortunate that their son's are alive. Next, Deborah describes Andrew's family life. It’s a difficult balance - loving the child, setting boundaries, etc. It's difficult to detect substance abuse in teens. Deborah describes all of the challenging event that occurred in the span of one year and how she handled the situation. Who supported Deborah throughout this challenging time in her life? Deborah started to focus on her own personal growth, believing that her son would recover even though she couldn't do it for him. Hot yoga, climbing mountains and her strong faith saved Deborah. It's not selfish to pursue your dreams and bring happiness and joy into your life even if your addict child is not there yet. Your life is a reflection of you. Next Emily asks Deborah her thoughts on how employers can address this issue of substance abuse. It’s important for employers to create an environment where it's safe to talk about mental illness and substance abuse. We need to withhold judgment. And judgment lives in the judger. How did Andrew become sober and what did it take for him to decide to get help? Andrew kept making the next right decision. Next, Deborah talks about the times Andrew relapsed. Emily talks about the importance of parents finding support and how challenging having an addict child is on a marriage. Deborah talks about what Andrew is up to now that he's sober and owns his own business. When Andrew was 9 he told his mom he had a fear that he'd give into temptation. Emily and Deborah talk about there is a piece of them that's aware relapses are possible. Then, Deborah talks about the importance of taking care of yourself, going after your dreams and helping others, when a loved one suffers from addiction. Let them know you have confidence in them and their ability to recover. How does Deborah recommend friends and family support parents with children suffering from addiction. Emily talks about how she pushed forward and didn't feel her feelings and start to do some inner work until 2 years ago. Deborah's sister passed away at age 19. Deborah was 17 at the time and she talks about how that impacted her. Finally, you aren’t alone. An estimated 70 percent of adults in the United States have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lives. Furthermore, up to 20 percent of these people go on to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Also, an estimated 5 percent of Americans, more than 13 million people, have PTSD at any given time. Amy Oestreicher was one of them. So, what happens when an ordinary teenager has to turn into a warrior just to survive? And can the journey through PTSD really become an “adventure?” Amy had ambitious plans for college and a Broadway career, until her stomach exploded the week before her senior prom. Months later, she awoke from a coma to learn that she might never be able to eat or drink again. After years on IV nutrition, her first bite of food awakened her senses to life's ordinary miracles. But it also brought back memories of being sexually abused by a trusted mentor for months, just before the unexpected rush to the emergency room that fateful Passover night. With determination, imagination, relentless resilience, and an inner “hunger” for life, Amy created a roadmap where none existed. Amy’s journey through life's unthinkable detours is nothing short of miraculous. But the creative path to healing she forged is accessible to anyone. As a survivor, and “thriver”, of abuse and extensive medical trauma, Amy discovered sources of resilience she didn’t know she had. Amy’s journey is ultimately a celebration of ordinary and extraordinary challenges and miracles. In this interview, Amy shares her struggles and discoveries living with both visible and invisible illness. In addition, she talks about the tremendous gifts to be reaped from trauma. Also, she shares lessons which have illuminated her path, and how these gifts can be discovered as a unique, yet universal way to navigate any kind of uncertainty. Episode Highlights: First Amy talks about her upcoming audio book. Then Emily asks Amy to tell her story. Amy had her life planned out. She applied to 17 colleges. She loved the world of theater. When she was 17, her mentor started abusing her. Amy told her mother abut the abuse in April of her senior year in High School. Shortly after that, Amy had a really bad stomach ache and her father took her to the hospital. Amy’s stomach exploded to the ceiling of the operating room. Her parents were told Amy wouldn't make it through the night. Months later Amy woke up from a coma. She was told she wasn't going to college. Furthermore, Amy didn't have a stomach and the doctors didn't know when she'd ever be able to eat or drink again. Amy talks about her recovery in the Intensive Care Unit. It took 7 years and 28 surgeries before Amy could eat and drink but she still doesn’t have a stomach. Next Amy talks abut the challenges of being home and not being able to eat or drink. Consequently, Amy learned how to be creative in the kitchen. Also, she discovered that she focused on what she couldn’t have. Amy’s memoir is about how creativity saved her life. Her first creation was a chocolate business. Next, she persuaded her parents to let her audition for the play Oliver. And she ended up getting the lead role. Creativity was Amy’s safe container where she could do what she loved and be someone other than who she became medically. She took it one day at a time with no timeline in sight. Also, she got through by being in the moment and being grateful. Amy presents at surgical conferences and talks to doctors to educate them on the psychological impacts of hunger. And, she doesn't know anyone else who has been through what she experienced. Amy talks about how her family supported her. Her brother kept a journal while he was in the ICU with her for 72 days. And Amy used that journal to write a play about how trauma affects a family. When she was finally able to eat, the food unexpectedly fueled her memories. She went to college at age 25. In college, Amy learned how the mind and body are connected and wrote a paper on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Amy calls herself a "Detourist" and Emily asks Amy to talk about the detours in her life. Gutless and Grateful is a musical Amy wrote about her life. She discovered that what happened to her was a beautiful detour. Trust your detour as you go through it one step at a time. We need community support when we heal and we get that by not playing the victim and by focusing on "what can we do with this." Detours are important for college students and Amy explains why. Discovering the Hero's Journey helped Amy discover her path. Gratitude was key to Amy's recovery. Also, gratitude helped Amy figure out her values. Amy discovered painting after her 13th surgery. Amy has give 4 TED Talks and the links are in the show notes. Emily and Amy talk about how everyone is an artist. Amy admits she needs to take time to breathe and appreciate what she's accomplished. Emily asks Amy if she's always so positive. Amy considers herself a very present person. Then she talks about her grieving process. Amy adds a tear to every one of her paintings to depict that even with the joy, there is sadness. Focusing on each individual moment got Amy through. Emily and Amy discuss the importance of sharing your story when you're ready. Finally, this COVID time is a detour for all of us. And there are resources on Amy’s website for resilience and a section for others to share their detour story. Onward Podcast guest Patty Bear grew up among the Plain People (Amish and Mennonites) of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, she was expected to follow in her ancestor's footsteps and become a Reformed Mennonite. Instead her world was upended at young age by an excommunication and shunning that made national news. Consequently, this trauma catapulted her out of an insular world where women were commanded to obey their husbands, where television, wearing jewelry, voting, or serving in the military were all forbidden. Yet she followed the call of her wild soul which led her led her to apply to the U.S. Air Force Academy and later become an airline pilot. Patty spent decades dedicated to the study of defying gravity: escaping conditioning, walking the transformational journey, and the practice of following the call of the wild soul. Her second book entitled Plain to Plane My Mennonite Childhood, a National Scandal and an Unconventional Soar to Freedom is set to publish in Feb 2021 In this interview, host Emily Harman and her guest, Patty, talk about the journeys that transformed their lives. Every transformational journey in life is about something within you blooming. It’s about you becoming more of who you really are. The Hero's Journey travels through four distinct stages that represent a quest. And Patty shares these stages in this interview. Finally, your transformational journey always benefits someone else, even though you may never be aware of your impact. Episode Highlights: Emily and Patty talk about their time at a service academy. Patty graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1986 and Emily graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1985. Then Patty shares her story and how she ended up attending the U.S. Air Force Academy. Patty grew up with the Plain People (Amish and Mennonites) of Pennsylvania. Her father was excommunicated and shunned. Consequently, he turned on his family and took his story to the press. Patty explains "shunning" - an organized form of ostracism. Her father wrongly promoted a story that his family was shunning him. Patty started seeing the world differently Next, Patty shares a story of her mother making little bread loaves to sell at the farmers market. At that point, Patty decided she would be financially independent and set a new goal for herself. Cross Country track brought Patty into a new environment and exposed her to new possibilities. Also, she decided she would attend college although this was completely against her culture. Her brother advised Patty to take hard math and science classes. And, when Patty was in 10th grade her brother talked her into taking flying lessons. When she was a junior in high school, she realized she didn't have the talent to get an athletic scholarship. She had no money for college and didn't know what she was going to do. Then she met with a Cadet from the Air Force Academy and that decision changed her life. What did Patty's mom say when she told her she was thinking about attending the Air Force Academy? Emily and Patty talk about their decision to attend a Service Academy and the impact it had on their mothers. Next Patty shares that she became a pilot upon graduating from the Air Force Academy. Patty couldn't fly combat aircraft but she did fly in the combat zone during the first Gulf War. Then, Patty became an airline pilot for United once she left the Air Force. She took an early retirement due to COVID. Next, Patty talks why she wrote her about her upcoming book. She wanted to explain how one can follow a transformational path despite challenges and seemingly hopelessness. Also, when everything is destroyed something comes out of it. Next Patty talks about the turning points and synchronicities in her life and how she moved forward and trusted that doors would open. Emily and Patty talk about the importance of taking advantage of opportunities and creating opportunities for more to happen in your life. Emily asks Patty about when to listen to your inner critic. Emily explains a time when she was faced with a tough decision - job she didn't want because it required leaving her comfort zone. By taking this job, Emily didn’t listen to her inner critic. Next Emily and Patty discuss the difference between a coach and counselor and why it’s important to have a coach along transformational journey. After that, Patty explains how working with her coach was life changing. Also, for a long time Patty thought someone else needed to change. However, eventually she took responsibility for her life. Her coach was exceptionally kind and helped her out of that dark place. Then Emily talks about how retirement courses never helped her with figuring out who she really was. After that Patty says so often coaching separates the personal from the professional and they cant be separated. Emily describes what living an authentic life means to her. Patty explains the moment she decided she needed a coach. Also, Patty’s book is an illustration of what her transformational journey has been like. Patty shares why it's important to tell her story. Next Patty describes the Hero's Journey and the metamorphosis we go through many times in life. Also, she explains what to expect at each stage. We have to own our story and the roles we play in our lives. And when we accept responsibility - that's a key to transformation. We reclaim our sense of power. Emily and Patty talk about "tests" they've encountered along their hero’s journey Then Patty and Emily talk about their life's purpose - their Dharma - and how they're walking their path. Next they talk about how they started paying attention to their intuition and inner wisdom. Patty's friend told her guidance always comes in advance of need and she gives an example. Ask yourself “What is change asking of me?” Finally, your transformational journey always benefits someone else, even though you may never be aware of your impact. After 20+ years as both an enlisted sailor and a commissioned US Navy SEAL officer, Jon Macaskill transitioned out of the military in August 2020. Furthermore, he says his Navy journey was a wild ride and things didn’t go quite as planned. But, he says, they definitely worked out for the best! Jon says he's been blessed to serve with some of the greatest men and women in the world, see places and do things most only read or dream about. Also, he’s thankful for the opportunity to honorably serve his country and defend his fellow Americans. Now Jon is the Deputy Executive Directorfor Veteran’s PATH. Veteran’s PATH is a nonprofit helping veterans rediscover meaning, purpose and joy through mindfulness, meditation and a safe community. Episode Highlights: First, Jon talks about what he did when he enlisted in the Navy. Then Emily shares a story from Chris Stricklin's Onward Podcast episode that explains the importance of Jon's enlisted job. Also, they discussed the lives he may have saved. Then Jon talks about why he decided to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and become a SEAL. After that, Jon describes the positions he held throughout his Naval career. Emily asks what the toughest part of being a SEAL was for Jon. Next, Emily asks how meditation would have helped Jon be a better SEAL. Jon responds by explaining how meditation could have helped him throughout his life. Veteran’s PATH is the nonprofit Jon works for now. He teaches mindfulness and meditation to veterans and service members. PATH stands for: Peace Acceptance Transformation and Honor. Jon shares how he felt hopeless when his daughter has a major surgery. After his daughter's illness, Jon took a job as the Commander of a Navy Operational Support Command. Two days before his Change of Command, Jon received a call from his sister to say she'd been battered by her then husband. Consequently, Jon's reaction led to electronic harassment charges and he was not allowed to take over his new command. Ultimately his anger led to sadness and depression. Past trauma and survivor guilt had bubbled back to the surface. And, the medication numbed Jon's pain to the point he didn't enjoy life anymore. Also, he came off mediCation and doctor recommended mediTation. Jon explains how he stuck with meditation for months and how the effects started lasting longer. Ultimately, he was able to talk about his feelings. Than, Emily refers to a past Onward Podcast episode about feelings. When ignored, feelings go to the basement and lift weights. Emily asks how Jon deals with the thoughts in his head wheen he meditates. The more he practiced mindfulness the less he had to think about it. Next Jon explains how meditation and mindfulness helped him enjoy simple things like feeding his baby daughter. And, he was able to be in the moment and not think about his task list. Emily describes her frustrations from her last job and how she incorrectly assumed once she retired things would get better and she's slow down. Jon explains that “meditate” is on his daily to do list. Then Emily mentioned an Onward Podcast episode where the guest said if you do, do, do, you turn into do do. Jon says there are times when medication helps. He's not anti-medication Insurance doesn't cover some of the "newer" methods/alternative therapies. Next Jon talks about some of these newer methods. For anxiety, stress, depression, Jon highly recommends meditation prior to anything else. Furthermore, it’s perfectly safe. Also, things can bubble to the surface but you can process it properly. Next, Emily describes meditating for 40 days straight and the feelings that came up. And these were feelings that she'd shoved to the basement. Also, once she dealt with them, she felt much better. Then, Jon talks about his Veteran’s PATH podcast and the high performing guests he interviews on his show. Finally, Emily and Jon talk about how positive feedback helps them keep publishing podcast episodes. Ultimately, both Jon and Emily have a mission to help others. In this week’s Podcast, Emily takes her show on the road.. Literally! Joined by two leading experts in the sex therapy field, Emily records this show live from Catalyst Con, a conference created to inspire exceptional conversations about sexuality. Whether because they are the uneducated or just plain uncomfortable, people treat sex like the elephant in the room. No one talks about what’s going on between the sheets. But if you can’t talk about it with your doctor, or even with the person you’re having sex with, how the hell can it ever get better? This show is all about breaking down your sexual barriers and opening up those lines of communication to pave the way to amazing sex! Up first is Dr. Hernando Chaves, renowned sex therapist and sexy professor. He and Emily discuss many of the sexual roadblocks that men and women face, including body image, stamina and being too stuck in their own heads. Then Emily sits down with popular love-and-sexologist Ava Cadell, here to tackle the most common question she gets asked: How can couples keep the passion alive? From anal sex to penis insecurities to the bowl of sex toys on Hernando’s table, this show touches on the things we’re all too shy to talk about. Don’t miss it!

Today’s music provided by Space Ghost. “I definitely think the kinder, gentler restaurant business is happening in a lot of ways.” [11:00] Matt Wang on Sharp & Hot
Tangent? Whoever heard of a tangent? Certainly not GleeKast, who brings you disciplined coverage of Asian F...until their Special Guest Star Gwyneth Pal--er, Slug shows up and chaos reigns with more furor than a Von Trier flick. The trio discuss everything from The Karate Kid Part III to Will Shuester’s taste in porn. Then Emily discovers she has the ability to wishmaster stuff and gets really distracted. So distracted that her irresponsible wishmastering leads to technical difficulties that threaten a good 90 minutes of group rambling. Three days later, the trio reunites in SkypeLand to finish off defining tiger moms and debating the healthiness of Mercedes’ relationship with her in no way healthy boyfriend/Snuffalufagus/forum/Durden. Trust us, it will all make sense two hours from now. In the meantime, there’s the link Ashlee sent us from someone who hates Glee:http://nerdgasmnoire.wordpress.com/2011/10/04/why-is-glee-so-addicted-to-failure/ and you should share your thoughts on it at palavr.com. There’s the videotorial shared with us by Wayne here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p72UqyVPj54 in which a chick declares war on Beyonce. And most touchingly (and educationally), here’s the superior cover of Fix You from Young@Heart, complete with Spanish subtitles because Emily wishmastered it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_n0zvoHlVkWe’ll be on a brief hiatus along with Glee, but keep your ears out for a Very Special And Long Ago Teased commentary episode and stay in touch at gleekast@gmail.com and the palavr.com forums. Also check outSlug over at the Slugcast, which you can find right on yonder: http://www.slugcast.com/ Just don’t throw salt on it because that’s cruel and gross. Sickos. Keep up that attitude and we’ll wishmaster you all the way back to The Season That Didn’t Happen. Remember: you don’t even know what we’re talking about.
Susan Messing (The Annoyance, Messing with a Friend) and Emily Fightmaster (Second City, The Annoyance) join Josh and Jake for a night at the Annoyance Theater. They start off with a discussion about the methods taught at the UCB Theater and The Annoyance theaters. Josh gets called a bitch with skinny thighs. Then Emily tells a true story about a time they took "good speed" in Europe and had a big time comedown in Barcelona. Susan talks about being with her dad as passed away, and a supernatural experience she had during that time. These true stories inspire improvised scenes about a new brand of Tab soda by Emily, a newscast gone horribly wrong, a dying man who will never get an oyster and more!
