Seoul, Korea episode Listener Story Spotlight A friend and a listener named Lois recently went to Hawaii. She told me she spent much time getting travel insurance for herself and her partner. She had to pay more than she expected as her partner was having a birthday between the day she bought the service and the day of the trip. But she said it was well worth it for her peace of mind. The FAQ for today is: Where to find the best travel insurance for a long trip abroad. 1. Start with a neutral comparison engine; you can see this in the show notes. Why use it first? Where to click Smart filters to enable It lets you price 30-day single-trip plans from dozens of underwriters side-by-side, then click through to the policy certificate in one step. Squaremouth (toggle "Comprehensive" or "Medical-only" to see apples-to-apples pricing). Squaremouth Travel Insurance Medical ≥ $100k, Evac≥ $250k, "Cancel for Any Reason" if you want maximum flexibility. Gives you consumer-written claim reviews plus AM Best financial ratings in the results grid. InsureMyTrip (same data feed as Squaremouth but different sort logic). Add "PIf relevant, existing condition waiver" if rek "Adventure sports" if you'll hike or dive. Pulls quotes from some insurers that don't feed aggregators (e.g., Allianz's higher-tier plans) and lists A.M. Best scores. TravelInsurance.com Use the "24/7 assistance" toggle to see which plans outsource helplines. Skeptical check: All three make a commission, and none of them has every carrier. Run your trip through at least two engines and see if the so-called "cheapest" plan is available. 2. Cross-reference with an independent ranking list U.S. News "Best Travel Insurance Companies 2025" ranks plans by coverage and claim-paying history—not advertising spend. It's a fast way to see which names (Travelex, Allianz, Tin Leg, etc.) consistently show up in the top tier. U.S. News 3. See what other solo women say SoloTravelerWorld.com keeps an updated "Best Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers" guide that spells out what to look for if you're traveling alone—single-supplement benefits, harassment coverage, and 24-hour crisis lines. Solo Traveler AbsolutelyLucy.com lays out five red flags that matter disproportionately to women (e.g., personal-assault medical limits, emergency contraception exclusions). Absolutely Lucy Read these before you fall for glossy Instagram ads that treat "female-friendly" as a slogan. 4. Kick the tires on the insurer's site If a plan looks good in a marketplace, open the policy certificate directly on the carrier's website (World Nomads, SafetyWing, Allianz, IMG, etc.). World Nomads publishes unfiltered claim reviews, which help sniff out chronic payout delays. World Nomads 5. Verify what your government will—or won't—do The U.S. State Department's Insurance Coverage Overseas page makes it crystal-clear that Uncle Sam does not pay your hospital bill or med-evac. It also links to the embassy medical resources for every country, which tells you how far the nearest trauma center is from your trekking trail. Travel.gov 6. Double-check your credit-card benefits Cards in your wallet may cover trip delays, baggage loss, or secondary car rental insurance. The Points Guy keeps a running tally of cards whose built-in coverage is worth something and where the gaps are (e.g., no medical evacuation). How to use these resources efficiently Quote your exact dates (don't round your trip to a calendar month; excess days add cost). Filter for medical & Evac first; those two benefits can bankrupt you. Ignore marketing buzzwords like "explorer" or "adventure" until you've opened the PDF certificate and searched for the activity you plan to do. Run your final four shortlist past recent claim reviews (Squaremouth, Trustpilot, Reddit r/solotravel) to see if the carrier ghosted people during COVID or the Israel–Gaza cancellations. You can purchase directly from the insurer once you've chosen, which avoids aggregator change fees if you need to modify dates. Stay curious, question every "Top 10" list's methodology, and you'll land the coverage that fits your risk profile—nothing more, nothing less. 60-second confidence challenge 3 things: neighborhood selection, daylight itineraries, scam avoidance Select walkable neighborhoods with public transportation nearby if you don't drive. Read reviews on the AirBNB website before you select. When booking a flight or train, be sure it arrives at daylight, which can differ in winter months. If it comes after dark, it will be more challenging. To avoid scams, be cautious when choosing passwords, logging out of websites, and making online purchases. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. Don't look like a target, either. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 1 of my book dives deeper—https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com See Book A for addressing all of these items. Find it on the website or Amazon. It's a series. Today's destination is: South Korea I visited South Korea last month. I landed at Seoul's Inchon Airport. My Korean pronunciation is not good, so please understand that as I describe my trip. I was excited to see the city through the eyes of my friend Chris. We were whisked away to a hotpot dinner, then taken to the French neighborhood in Seoul, where we rested for the night. The next morning, we drove south to visit a town about 2 hours away and stayed in Wolbong-ro (Road), in Seobuk-gu, near SeongJeong. For example, the Seoul Noryyanglin Fisheries Wholesale Market is five stories tall and open to the public. It's worth seeing if you like seafood, and you can roam the aisles looking for your favorite fish delicacies. I visited the Vovo Bidet company and met with the director and some of his team. Have you seen the #1 Bidet firm in Korea? They have retail and wholesale offices in the Los Angeles area, too. I liked the tour of the offices here in Seoul. They even have a Bidet to go. Think about that for a minute. That was in Daebang-dong or Seocho4-dong. I visited retail stores such as Zara, one of my favorites for fashion. I had Chinese, Japanese, and Fusion foods. I took subways, busses, taxis, and Ubers plus trains. I went to Gwannghumun Square, the purple Station #9. I went to the shopping mall called The Hyundai. and found stores like Zanmang Loopy, the Hyundai Present, and a great coffee and tea shop. I learned about Hanguel, the Korean alphabet, and saw the statue of Sejong the Great. There was also another statue of Admiral YiSun Sin. The Bukchon Honok Village is a quiet residential area. Jogyasa Temple is where you will see Buddism. Hongdae is the neighborhood for independent artists. Yonsei University was a place I wanted to visit next time, as I was in the neighborhood and liked it a lot. Gangnam style, well, maybe next time. I tried new foods, such as mung bean pancakes and hotleok desserts. We had a wonderful dinner at Sushi-ya Shabu-ya, about an hour from Seoul, near Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan-si-Buldang1-dong. Recommended: Relax in a tea house. Smart Move and Slip up pairings In Korea, we were departing from the airport without enough money on our transit cards, so we could not enter the building. Instead, we had to see the office at the kiosk and pay for the train. It was not much, but it did take a few minutes. We arrived well ahead of the recommended 3 hours, so that was not an issue. 60 second confidence challenge Do you or don't you tip? Not in South Korea. But it's always smart to ask. Be confident when you know what the expectations are. Resources Roundup If you are looking for more solo female travel resources, you can find several tips and ways to navigate the pitfalls, such as paying the difference on the transit card when you go long distances or knowing when to tip. When you get lost, don't get upset. Get found. You will be better off if you cool down instead of heating your brain incorrectly. Chill, and you'll be found sooner. Dr. Travelbest's tip #760.

Rodrigo Duterte has to be the most honest politician to ever walk the face of the Earth. As the mayor of a major city in The Phillipines Duterte enacted harsh drug laws and may or may not have established a death squad to deal with the drug problem. Human rights groups have pinned thousands of corpses to Duterte. When he ran for President (and won) he promised the deaths of millions. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Several mourning practices are observed during the week of Tisha B'Ab, from Mosa'eh Shabbat before Tisha B'Ab until after the fast. These include haircutting and shaving. The Halachic authorities addressed the question of how these Halachot apply in years such as this year, when Tisha B'Ab falls on Shabbat and is thus observed on Sunday (as fasting is inappropriate on Shabbat), or, for that matter, if Tisha B'Ab actually falls on Sunday. In these situations, Tisha B'Ab begins immediately after Shabbat, and thus there is no "Shabu'a Sh'hal Bo Tisha B'Ab" (week of Tisha B'Ab). Do the restrictions of the week of Tisha B'Ab apply in such a case, and, if so, when?Hacham Ovadia Yosef ZT"L ruled that strictly speaking, the Halachot of "Shabu'a Sh'hal Bo Tisha B'Ab" do not apply in such a case. Since Tisha B'Ab begins immediately after Shabbat, there is no "week of Tisha B'Ab," and one may shave and take a haircut throughout the previous week. However, in Halichot Olam (vol. 2), Hacham Ovadia notes the ruling of the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Debarim (12), that in such a case one should preferably abstain from shaving and haircutting the Friday before Tisha B'Ab, so he does not appear perfectly groomed on Tisha B'Ab. This is also the position of Rav Haim Palachi (Turkey, 1788-1869), in his work Mo'ed Le'chol Hai. Hacham Ovadia notes that this is the position of the Kolbo, as well.Elsewhere in his writings, Hacham Ovadia noted the custom observed by some to refrain from haircutting and shaving throughout the entire week before Tisha B'Ab when it falls on Sunday. Rabbi Biton, in Yalkut Yosef, writes that this is the preferred practice. As for the final Halacha, then, it is permissible to shave and take a haircut during the week before Tisha B'Ab when the fast is observed on Sunday, though one who wishes to be stringent should refrain from shaving and haircutting the Friday before Tisha B'Ab, and those who wish to be extra stringent should refrain throughout the previous week.Summary: Strictly speaking, when Tisha B'Ab is observed on Sunday, one is allowed to shave and take a haircut the week before Tisha B'Ab, without any restrictions. However, many have the custom to refrain from shaving and haircutting in such a case on the Friday before Tisha B'Ab, and there are those who refrain throughout the entire week before Tisha B'Ab.

In episode #108, I introduced the practice of putting up a shime-kazari decoration at the end of the year before welcoming the Japanese New Year. So when do you remove the shime-kazari in January? And how long do you keep the Kagamimochi(鏡餅) on display? First of all, New Year's is an event to welcome the god of the year, Toshigami-sama(年神様). The New Year is an event to welcome the Toshigami, the god of agriculture who is responsible for a good harvest. It is also said that the New Year's God comes to the house on New Year's Day to bring good luck for the year and sweep away bad luck. The New Year's ornaments(Sime-kazari) are used as landmarks to welcome the New Year's god into the house. It also serves as a substitute for the gods when they stay in the house. The kadomatsu(門松) and shime-zashiki(しめ飾り) can be left on display during the period known as the "inside of the pine tree". This is the time when the New Year's festivities begin. This is the period between the beginning of the New Year and the return of the gods. This period differs from region to region. In the Kanto, Tohoku, and Kyushu regions, the period lasts until January 7, and in the Kansai region, January 15. (In the Kanto, Tohoku and Kyushu regions, the period of time varies from region to region. Kagamimochi is usually displayed until January 11th, the day of Kagami-biraki(鏡開き). On the day of Kagami-biraki, the rice cake is opened (pounded with a wooden hammer to break it open) and served with ozoni or soup stock. On Kagami-biraki day, the rice cakes are opened (by beating the cakes with a wooden hammer) and eaten as zoni or soup. Now, in today's episode, I'd like to introduce Japanese winter food. Here are some of the many winter foods of Japan. 鍋(Nabe, Hot pot) しゃぶしゃぶ(Shabu shabu) カニ鍋(Kani nabe, crab hot pot) ちゃんこ鍋(Chanko nabe) すき焼き(Suki Yaki, thin slices of beef, cooked with various vegetables in a table-top cast-iron pan) 石焼き芋(Ishi Yaki Imo, sweet potatoes baked in hot stones ズワイガニ(Zuwai Gani, snow crab ) Hot pot is the best thing to eat on a cold day! じゃあ、またね

Hey there! This week's interview with farmer and mother, Heather Fukase, is a bit on the long side but I just couldn't cut out all the deliciously fun topics we cover! So, take your time with it and enjoy. In this week's episode, we get a full lesson on RICE-- learning about how it is grown in Japan, the different varieties & what makes them different, how to eat it and of course, a rice recipe for Miso Yaki Onigiri (Grilled Miso Rice Balls). Along the way, Heather shares her stories of being a young Australian woman trying to naturally farm in Japan and the ways in which old traditions and modern innovation come together. We learn how she's grown her business with a SUPER UNIQUE niche and delivery method as well as how japanese students learn about food & seasonality through their school lunches. I LOVE japanese food and so we wander into a few areas of japanese food culture that I think you'll enjoy to hear about. Then, you can find a place in your area to try some of these items! He’s been completely immersed in Dance culture for well over a decade now, a fact reflected by his ability to craft the kind of imaginative mixes only heard from the most dedicated record spinners. It’s this asset, combined with his notorious enthusiasm behind the decks that paved the way for his amalgamation into the team at Slide, one of Oxford & London’s foremost authorities on hosting House & Techno events. Throughout his involvement with the brand, he has been fortunate enough to play to sizeable crowds on a monthly basis at Oxford’s O2 Academy, and has warmed up for the likes of Nic Fanciulli, Adam Freeland, Krafty Kuts, Stanton Warriors, and Style Of Eye amongst many others. He’s also had the privilege of being chosen to warm up for Erol Alkan with Simple (Oxford’s flagship Dance promotion), invited for several guest spots on Oxford FM, and repeatedly booked for boat parties and the burgeoning Out To Graze Festival for 3 consecutive years alongside fellow turntable maestro Dave Johnys. It’s safe to say he’s been a busy lad, but he hasn’t limited himself to local events. Spreading his wings and delving into the turbulent London scene has thrown up some of the most memorable experiences, such as a particular booking at SeOne (during a Tidy vs. NuReligion hard-house event). Having the courage to stick to the music he believed in led to his set (B2B with good friend Chris Page) packing out an empty dancefloor, despite playing intelligent techno to a room full of day-glow ravers who had never heard anything like it. It’s gigs like this that have sparked his enthusiasm for DJing in London, and subsequently joining the team at Kai-Zen has provided Andy with a much larger podium to shout from. Despite 2011 being a quiet year with regards to club appearances, Andy has used the time to start getting to grips with music production, and the intricacies of Ableton Live 8. He’s the first to admit that he should have made a start on this a long time ago, but as is so often the case, life’s distractions have kept his attentions elsewhere. Regardless, 2011 was a significant year whereby his move into the complex world of music creation meant that he also took some time to consider the music he was supporting. Whilst Andy is always extremely vocal in his adoration of Chicago-House, Deep-House, and Progressive (or anything with a decent groove for that matter), he found that his tastes had slowly adapted to favour the more leftfield abstract Techno of such artists as Luke Abbott, Nathan Fake, Dominik Eulberg, and Caribou. With that in mind, he has made the conscious decision to start openly embracing this style of music (regardless of whether it leads to an incline or decrease in bookings), and base his sets on Techno for those with a more open mind to Dance music. With regards to influences, Andy would never profess to have a page-long list, but one DJ/Producer that does spring to mind again and again is James Holden. As his friends will testify, Andy’s love for all things Holden is boundless, mainly due to the forward-thinking nature of the music released on his Border Community imprint and the unparalleled approach Holden has to music. Following closely behind would have to be Nick Warren. His reason for influence stems from his respect for a man who still has an unmatched passion for pushing new and interesting music, despite being in the industry since year dot. As a proud member of the Electronica scene, Andy would hope that this ethos of never compromising music quality will serve him well as a DJ guideline, and that through this he’ll never be regarded as ‘just another DJ’.
