You all know that reinvention is my jam. I did it with my career, my relationship — basically, my entire life! It's not always easy, but shifting your identity and revealing the true essence of what makes you unique is possible at any time. Sometimes, you won't even have a choice. Maybe you're going from boss babe mode to motherhood and navigating that change, or you've hit a plateau in your career, forcing you to take things to the next level. Well, loves, do I have the episode for you! This is basically a mini-masterclass in pivoting with grace and how to discover your personal brand with my Pinay sister, fellow mama, and brand marketing queen, Jennifer (Jen) Kem.   Jennifer is a branding and marketing expert who gets entrepreneurs seen, heard, and paid – for being themselves. She's the creator of the Master Brand Method: a framework to develop powerful brand archetypes that win customers' hearts. She uses the Master Brand method in digital strategy coaching for emerging entrepreneurs, celebrity brands like Oprah Winfrey Network and Steve Harvey, and major corporations including Verizon, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Bank of Hawaii. What she is most passionate about in her work today is her legacy project: Femmefluence, a platform that supports women leaders to fully rise into their influence and affluence, so they can make an even greater impact in the world. Jennifer serves up straight talk wrapped in love because she understands entrepreneurs' challenges: She built a retail business and became a millionaire at 32, only to lose it all in the recession two years later. She is now the successful owner of three million-dollar brand-building businesses and the mother of three children. Here's what we get into in this episode…  - How to be resourceful and make yourself stand out - What it means to be values-driven and how to make values-driven decisions - Are you using imposter syndrome as a crutch? - The one (small) step you need to take to pivot and make a change - Embracing your full multi-hyphenate self - And SO much more.  Be sure to also check out…  - Find Jen on Instagram @jennifer.kem - Grab Jen's FREE GIFT for the Brave Table audience: find out your Archetype Influence Mix Assessment — www.JenniferKem.com/bravetable - Check out Jen's YouTube Channel — www.JenniferKem.com/YouTube - More from an entrepreneur mama in episode 42 with Emily Hirsh  - Episode 48: Shifting Your Career, Transitions, and Finding Your Super Power with Ashley Stahl - Episode 55: How To Be More Bold & Colorful in All Areas of Your Life with Paola Mathé Get your FREE That Sucked. Have you ever considered that values are behaviors and not ideas?  As in, if you could behave in alignment with your values, what would be possible in your business? I have to tell you, I'd never thought about it like that before, unless you count the idea that “love is a verb” — which is something I've heard in my family since I was little. Outside of that, I've thought of values as nice little platitudes executives hang on their walls, or memes people create for social media. But today's podcast guest, Jennifer Kem changed all of that. It all changed for her after a colleague was promoted over her while she was still working in corporate. She found herself in the elevator after making sacrifice after sacrifice, only to have a male colleague be promoted instead of her.  Instead of whining or staying in a state of rage, Jennifer did something amazing: She asked a really important question … Tune in to find out what it was. There was just so much to the interview. So I reached out and very kindly, she...

Building your art business gets stressful real fast when it takes you beyond the comfort of creating art. Still, marketing, sales, and engagement are a necessity for any person building a business. Why should you know your brand archetype as an artist? You have your own style and preferred medium of art, so is branding and archetypes really important? After all, you're possibly running ads, you're staying on top of social media posts, and you have your own art collections for sale and available for purchase. Maybe you've even set up a few funnels to grow your business. Jennifer Kem is the creator of Master Brand. While she agrees that marketing is part of branding, she also distinguishes why branding is more about your messaging. “The brand is your art, and the rest is science. Jennifer Kem grew up in the plantation town of Wailea, HI. As the young descendent of Filipino immigrants, she was a studious introvert. Her grandmother, a great influence, had her reading the business section of the newspaper, giving her a very important lesson early on: “You can think beyond what's around you.” Jen generously shares her story, taking us from childhood, through her MBA at UC Berkeley to her work at the Ogilvy Company where she ran coffee and ached to do grander copy writing. She watched as ad execs created “Ad Duels” pitting Coke against Pepsi and found their use of architypes intriguing. Diving deeper into the concepts of how people consume, Jen found that marketing really IS a science! She's a lover of Values-Driven Leadership and notes that so much of a leader's journey is based on Vision, Violation, and Voids. Jen's journey continued as she became a product manager at Oracle and went on to run Verizon's B2B for the west coast. Known as “the fixer” even in her early 20s, Jen wanted to learn how to succeed more greatly. She asked an important question of one of the senior leaders: What do I have to do to have your job in 10 years? It wasn't a wish, it was a foundational question for creating a plan. But when she took on some hard work and was passed over for a promotion, she began to wonder how to make it on her own. What will someone pay me for? o Does the market want it? o Will people really pay for it? Seeing how big Victoria's Secret became, she began an import and retail business in Hawaii, a biz that grew to $10M. She notes that she was betting on herself as the outlier. But 2008 was cruel to so many in retail and her business was no exception. She lost almost everything and fell into a depression. She recalls sitting on the front porch, just watching cars pass by and her then-10-year-old daughter saying, “Mommy, you're Jen Kem and it's time to wake up.” She notes, “I was the hardest project I had to take on.” Returning to corporate to get back on her feet, she reentered as a consultant and created KemCom, now a multi-million-dollar company. She began to study how she had become a success and created a model for others, launching The MasterBrand Institute. Here, she guides entrepreneurs back to Values-Driven Leadership and notes that most fail when it comes to managing systems (people, processes, and technology). She notes that leaders must take on three roles, then let go of two. - Visionizer – founder - Strategizer – overseeing Sales and Marketing - Mobilizer – the one to oversee operations, processes, and systems Jen has a gift for the audience if you'd like to explore your architype and leadership style. Today, we're talking with the incredible Jennifer Kem, a San Francisco Bay Area-based brand building and leadership expert who gets entrepreneurs seen, heard, and paid for being themselves. In this episode, she's pulling back the curtain on the moments that shaped her life and led her to her purpose, from getting passed up for a promotion and starting and growing an 8-figure retail business, to losing that business, and falling into a deep depression. She'll open up on the moment she knew it was time to come back, and how she went on to build a career and a life that sets her soul on fire. What to Listen For: Who is Jennifer Kem? Looking back on what she thought her life would be “If you would've asked me back in 2005, would I be interested in being an entrepreneur, owning my own business, my answer would have been, no. My dreams at the time were to ascend the corporate ladder and I wanted to show that an ambitious woman could rise through the rankings of the corporate world and make a big difference in that way. And I felt so strongly that I thought that was going to be my life path and the way that I was going to use the gifts that I was given.” The advice a mentor gave her when she was 22 Being known as “The Project Crusher” and climbing the corporate ladder rapidly Get passed up for a promotion for a male colleague after implementing a profitable and complex project Realizing she wanted more control over her life Creating her 9-month exit strategy Making the leap in 2006 “I opened a retail store chain. I actually only thought I was going to open one store. It turned into multiple locations.” Finding rapid success in her first entrepreneurial venture “I went from making a very respectable salary as a corporate executive to having a multi-million dollar business in less than 18 months. I say this with not just humility, but also caution because that actually worked against me.” Defying the advice of her financial advisor and mentor - and what happened next “When the economy crashed in 2008 and I literally went from on the highest of high to the lowest of low in my entire life. I spiraled into depression. I had lost my business completely two days before Christmas, all my assets were frozen by the U S government and by private law firms. I couldn't get my daughters Christmas presents, which really bothered me. I lost my marriage. It was already rocky going into that year. I also lost my biggest mentor in life, which was my grandmother all in the span of these 90 days. You want to talk about, like on one hand, my confidence had been so high and I was so proud of what had accomplished. Then I had the ultimate bitch slap in my face because this time it was nobody's fault at all, except for mine.” Becoming functionally homeless after being shut out of my business, house, and bank accounts Moving back into my grandmother's house and then losing her Becoming catatonically depressed Returning to humble country roots Not eating and dropping to less than 100 pounds “If you were a functioning person, and then all of a sudden, a big change happens in your life, a trauma, a change, something, and you don't even realize how you physically fall apart, but everyone else can see it. And that was my experience. I would sit on the porch. I would watch the cars go by. I was catatonic. I subsisted on green tea and cigarettes. I started smoking.” The incredible moment with her daughter that put her back on her purpose-driven path “You forget that people care about you, you forget that. And it's not just the children, it's the adults. And I don't know, I can't even describe it, it felt like magic. When she put her hand on my shoulder the aperture of my eyes shifted. I could see things clearly again, and I looked at her and I just said, Oh my God, thank you. Thank you so much. And I promise you, Mommy is going to figure this out and we're going to get through ...

The rise of technology and digital marketing has set 2020 apart from any other year before it.  Today, Kelly chats with brand futurist and brand psychologist Jennifer Kem about the unlimited real-estate available in the digital landscape, and how despite the market saturation and growth of the online world, people are getting lost in the shuffle.  The two touch on authenticity and focusing on confidence, having a long-term mindset, acquiring versus keeping clients and why retention is extremely important.  They discuss which stories matter most in your business growth and visibility, providing examples of both “approachability stories” and “authority stories.” Jennifer mentions that you don’t need to be shocking to be effective, you just need to be honest. Jennifer also goes into how the 2008 recession set her up for success and, with the huge pivot in the world of business, lifestyle, and even parenting, this is the time to make a huge impact.  Kelly goes on to talk about reflecting on yourself as a leader now versus where you were this time last year, and quantifying all you’ve learned. Finally, Kelly and Jennifer discuss failure and using it as a learning tool to adapt. Want to connect with Jennifer? Jennifer Kem is a San Francisco Bay Area-based branding and marketing expert who gets entrepreneurs seen, heard, and paid — for being themselves. She’s the creator of the Master Brand Method: a framework to develop powerful brand archetypes that win customers’ hearts, leveraging Jennifer’s 17 years of corporate experience and her launching of multiple companies. Jennifer also has been a coach to Kathy and helped her unlock her business from a steady 100K a year to multiple six figures a year. Jennifer shares on this week’s episode why marketing and core values are heavily intertwined!   Key takeaways: You can show up as your authentic self and still make a killing in business. How did Jennifer get started? If you want to get seen, heard, and paid, you have to develop your confidence muscles. What is marketing? It’s simply letting people know how you can help them. You got to stop hiding, right now! How can you get yourself more out there? People need to know you exist! Why is it so important to know your values and have them show up in your business? We don’t have triumph without challenge. Jennifer used to work 120-hour workweeks and never saw her family. You don’t really know what your values are until it violates them. Marketing is what will lead you to great financial breakthroughs, but if you don’t have your values supporting it, then it’ll just become a leaky bucket. What are Jennifer’s values today? Fear is fake, danger is real. Develop a healthy relationship with your fear. Kathy had been hiding for 20 years and Jennifer was not going to let her play victim anymore. And guess what! Kathy did the live event that she was so scared of doing and she didn’t die! Good coaches aren’t in the business of making you codependent on them. You have to believe that you’re worthy.   Resources: Masterbrand.me Jennifer's free gift: masterbrand.securechkout.net/Dare Jenniferkem.com   Quotes:   “If you haven’t hit seven figures, your biggest gap right now is marketing.”   “I am worthy of being seen, heard, and paid, and in order to do that, I must be visible!”   “It’s hard to know success if you don’t know failure, too. They are in a relationship with each other.”

And while this brand advisor’s professional vision has since evolved, her keen mind for business opportunity and willingness to embrace personal evolution has continued to deliver success… in spite of massive external inconveniences, personal detours and disappointments, and generations of limiting cultural and familial programming. Intimately knowing the people who will support your path is mandatory as you step further into your Femmefluence. The better you understand your audience, the more easily and effectively you can persuade them to aligning with your end goal. In this episode of Femmefluence Radio, host Jennifer Kem talks audience building, where to start, and testing your ideas out.   Key Points from this Episode: The key to getting what you really want is having the certainty and confidence you to have the real conversations necessary with the right people to enroll decision-makers in to your ideas, close sales and create movements Knowing your real audience and what they care about will save you so much time and money, it’s practically priceless. What would be possible for you if you knew how to read the minds of the people you want to influence? People don’t care about the messenger or the message, unless they know how the messenger and message supports getting what they want or how they can eliminate something that’s bringing pain in their life.  That’s why it’s important to not just know what you learned in the last episode about Archetypes - you must learn what your Audience desires or wants to avoid. Most people who teach how to build a personal and professional brand don’t tell you that it’s the Archetype and the Audience that’s required to get rich and recognized.

When equipped with three mindset principles, you can Amplify how you show up in the world. Join host Jennifer Kem as she teaches the importance and practicality of Courage, Attitude and Ownership in your life.   Key Points from this Episode As women, we’re not only carrying too much baggage, we’re carrying a lot of trash. Especially between our ears! The distance between where you are (Point A) and where you want to be (Point B), is about 5 inches between your ears. But here’s the thing - because of lack of boundaries, mentorship, a community and a clean environment to operate in (for more on that, visit our episode on being Values-Driven) we tend to clutter up our brains with things we should not be available for. We justify these things as necessary to how our lives are set up. So much so that we’re calling that trash recycled and claiming ourselves eco-friendly! HAH! But in all seriousness, that’s just a metaphor for the word insanity - hoping and doing the same things over and over again, expecting different results. Of the CEOs who lead the companies that make up the 2018 Fortune 500 list, out today, just 22 are women. That number is down 25 percent from last year's record-breaking 32 female CEOs, the highest share of women since the Fortune's first 500 list in 1955. There are now only 22 women CEOs in the Fortune 500 index. Not one is black. None of the women who are no longer CEOs were replaced by other women. The glass ceiling persists at Fortune 500 companies, especially for women of color. The main factor claimed for lack of women at the top is that there needs to be a better pipeline to build those leaders up.
