Who is the thief known as Dismas? Here are the suspects in the order we met them:Dr. Thomas, a canon lawyer who can take on—and take down—any real estate lawyer out there. Mr. Barry Wolf, owner of The Wolf Group, art appraisers and Maggie's boss. Sr. Scholastica, caretaker of the Phelps treasury and seemingly the only member of the mysterious Sodality of St. Dismas. Fr. Hugh Sinclair, investigator for the Vatican Museum—or is he?Mr. Alexi Rublev, main investor in the Wolf group and a real estate developer with his eye on the property owned by Phelps Hall.Here are the facts the way Maggie understands them:When Alexei Rublev cannot reach Barry Wolf, who is returning from an overseas trip, he calls Maggie and orders her to appraise an icon of St. Dismas that was stolen from Phelps Hall, as well as demanding that she send him all the Wolf Group's records about insurance claims involving the Vatican Museum. Rublev justifies his demands by saying if Barry won't pull the trigger, Rublev will pull it for him. Unsure of what Rublev meant by that, Maggie does what Rublev asks, emailing him the records and going to Phelps Hall to conduct the appraisal. When she arrives at Phelps Hall, she finds what seems to be a far more valuable painting than the icon, which no-one knows anything about. For the first time, it occurs to her how odd it is to be asked to appraise an item that isn't there. When Wolf arrives from overseas, he is unfairly furious with Maggie. Wolf gets even more furious when Rublev shows up with a state trooper, claiming that the stolen icon is evidence that Phelps Hall is nothing but a money laundering operation for the Vatican Bank, and demanding that Phelps Hall be shut down. Rublev is accused by Thomas of looking for an excuse to shut down Phelps Hall, so he can buy their land. Maggie remembers Rublev's comment about pulling the trigger and wonders whether he and Barry were colluding in manufacturing evidence, so he can seize Phelps Hall. But there is also a great deal of evidence that in obeying Rublev's order, she has stumbled across a massive money laundering scheme run by a master thief named Dismas, and it may be connected to Phelps Hall. Certainly, no-one at Phelps Hall is exactly what they seem. GIANNI RUSSO was born in Manhattan in 1943 and raised in the then close-knit Little Italy, and later Rosebank, Staten Island. After reprising Carlo Rizzi in a brief flashback scene at the end of The Godfather Part II, Russo acted in more than 46 films, including Goodnight, My Love (1972), Lepke (1975, as Albert Anastasia), Laserblast (1978), Chances Are (1989), The Freshman (1990), Side Out (1990), Another You (1991), Super Mario Bros. (1993), Any Given Sunday (1999) and Seabiscuit (2003). Russo claims that he started a fledgling career in organized crime working as an errand boy and mob associate for Frank Costello as an adolescent but later abandoned the dangerous and volatile lifestyle of organized crime. The Staten Island Mafioso Tommy Bilotti was reportedly best man at Russo's wedding. Since the beginning of his acting career, Russo owned a Las Vegas restaurant called Gianni Russo's State Street at 2570 State Street on the Las Vegas Strip (closed in 1988), and reportedly defeated 23 federal criminal indictments on a variety of charges stemming from alleged organized crime associations. Russo is also a singer. In 2004, he released a CD called Reflections that pays homage to Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Russo owns a wine brand, Gianni Russo Wines, which debuted in 2009. The word 'Synodality' may make Protestant's eyes glaze over, but inside the Catholic Church it is causing lots of controversy, as bishops around the globe spar over what Pope Francis expects from this new initiative. Is the pope trying to curtail a Vatican organization affiliated with Clarence and Ginni Thomas, right wing judges, and developing world dictators?We're talking about Opus Dei, the Catholic Information Network, Leonard Leo, Ginni and Clarence Thomas, and incidentally in the context of this story, the Order of the Knights of Malta. She started with Lifespring, a self-help cult which was sued into bankruptcy in the late 1980s and early 1990s after a string of accidental deaths related to their activities. From there she worked with a series of "deprogramming" organizations which strayed into kidnapping-for-hire in their efforts to forcibly remove the relatives of wealthy families from other cults. Today, Ginni's cult is the assortment of far-right American political interests which use her husband's name and influence to try and coalesce into a singular political vision. One of those interests is a secretive organization of wealthy Catholic donors named Opus Dei, which was also featured in Dan Brown's novel The DaVinci Code. 1 Opus Dei was formed during the Spanish Civil War by a priest named Josemaría Escrivá. From its outset, it has been an advocate of far-right governments, from Franco's Spain to various military dictatorships in South America. They were rumored to be involved in the Argentine military dictatorship during the Falklands War, which indirectly caused the collapse of Banco Ambrosiano, after which that bank's chairman Roberto Calvi was found hanging from the Blackfriar Bridge in London with bricks in his pockets and $14,000 in cash in his jacket. The bricks signified his rumored membership in another secret organization: the Masonic lodge Propaganda Due. In America, Opus Dei is behind money which flows into far-right political causes, particularly those related to the appointment of federal judges. The organization's American functions are run by a man named Leonard Leo, who was Trump's primary judicial consultant. Leo was also a consultant to the George W. Bush administration on the selection of justices Samuel Alito and John Roberts. 2 The Order of the Knights of Malta are unfortunate victims in this story. The current pope stuck them with the most prominent far-right priest in America, Cardinal Raymond Burke, when he demoted that priest from the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's equivalent of a supreme court back in 2014. The pope fired Burke again and reinstated Albrecht von Boeselager, the former chancellor of the Order who Burke and its Grand Master had purged for distributing condoms and morning-after birth control pills in the Myanmar region. More recently, the pope has ordered all vatican organizations to deposit their funds into the Vatican Bank within the next 30 days, and demoted the chief clergy officer in Opus Dei from a bishop to a priest. John Paul IIJohn Paul II was one of the great popes.  He is now a saint.  As a saint, that means he has  intercessory power.  Individuals can pray to him and  he will take their concerns directly to God.  Someone becomes a saint by performing three miracles.  We will discuss what those miracles were, at least one of them.  John Paul became pope during a time of significant stress.  There was stress within the Church regarding what constitutes official teaching.  There was also stress regarding corruption within the church, and corruption and crime outside of the church.  John Paul decided that the church had committed numerous sins over the centuries and it had to clear its soul by acknowledging those sins.  He also decided that the church was internally divided by teachings and the lack of obedience among the hierarchy.  He became a tough pope.  This left the church organizationally disciplined but also divided in a way that caused many Catholics, especially younger Catholics, to walk away. This was a class zoom lecture in which students could actually see me as I waved my arms around and snapped my fingers and raised an umbrella for them to see.  Fortunately, it was far enough into the semester that I had figured out the art of lecturing to a machine so  this is relatively smooth. Glitches:  However, I made  two verbal glitches during the lecture.  I spoke of Saint Patrick's Square in Rome when I obviously meant St. Peter's Square.  I also referred to the earlier pope as Pius when I obviously meant Paul.  (This pope was not called John Pius, as you may have noted).  Sorry for those fumbles.  Some names mentioned:  John XXIII, Lech Walesa, Hans Kung, Cardinal John O'Connor, Cardinal Dearden, Cardinal Szoka, Father Robert Drinan, Zbigniev Brzezinski, President Brezhnev of the USSR, and General Jaruzelski of Poland. Terms mentioned:  Vatican Bank, Gambino Family, Warsaw Pact, Schism, Orthodoxy, Orthopraxis, mea culpa.  Note two earlier podcasts relevant to this one.               How a Pope is Elected,              Vatican II.
