Here are 3 stupid answers you DON’T want to say… 1. “No.” This ends the conversation but it also ends the relationship because it puts them on the defensive. Watch this video on Why “No” is the Dumbest Objection Handler Ever, and what to say instead: 2. “I can’t.” It doesn’t make them want to work with you more...and tells them that you’re not an agent who has power and authority. 3. Sarcasm. (e.g. “Which room in your house do I get?”) It’s cheesy and doesn’t get to the point. Here’s an excerpt of the BEST answer (because it respects them and their question, focuses on their benefit, and increases your value as the agent that can get them the best result) “That’s a great question. My commission isn’t part of the negotiation. Can I explain why? Because...unlike many unskilled agents, my value is in getting you a better deal on the home you choose…” (for the complete script to use, watch the full video) Get more in-depth training on how to handle objections in a way that makes people want to work with you at Agent Mastery Live Virtual 2021. Tom Patzelt joins us with his 28+ years in the medical technology field holding many roles and specializing in go to market strategies and forging new analysis and execution as our new normal evolves. We discuss how marketing in medtech needs to lead the customer/provider conversation using Digital technologies to virtually kick in the door that softens the front lines so reps have easier access. Why is this important? No way are companies launching new products and implementing the old school sales reps tactics of cold calling and thinking it will work. Why? No sales access - we have OR access to cover a case but selling has a new normal and we, the commercial team, have to become one to be successful. Take a seat and listen in as we talk about the new commercial normal.
If you would like to feel really good, then watch this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHiKxytbCWk. It’s a dull and boring video about folding towels and will make you (or at least many people) get chills and give you a “brain orgasm.” Why? No one really knows for sure but I’ll explain what is known about it as I start this episode. Do you know a complainer? It’s a trick question because you probably know a lot more than one. In fact, you might be a complainer without realizing it. Cianna Stewart has studied the subject of complaining in great detail and even wrote a book on it called, No Complaints: How to Stop Sabotaging Your Own Joy (http://amzn.to/2CNYU1M ). Listen as she reveals why some people complain about every little thing and strategies to stop yourself from complaining and to stop complainers from complaining. A lot of the time you use the word “that” in a sentence, it is totally unnecessary. Oh, and so is “totally” as in totally unnecessary. I’ll have a list of words you probably use that you don’t really need to – in fact you really shouldn’t. https://www.themuse.com/advice/15-words-you-need-to-eliminate-from-your-vocabulary-to-sound-smarter You may have people in your life who “gaslight” you. It is a form of manipulation and it is very toxic. Did you know nitric oxide plays a fundamental role in the optimal functioning of your body? Nitric oxide not only has an anti-microbial effect (it kills bacteria and viruses), but also has a series of preventive functions, such as hypertension, inflammation, and coronary-artery disease and heart attack. Dr. Louis Ignarro is the 1998 Nobel Peace price winner in Physiology Medicine for discovering nitric oxide acts as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system. And in this episode, he shares the knowledge he has cultivated from his 50 years of research on the topic. So how can we boost this important molecule in our bodies? It’s surprisingly easy: by intaking antioxidants from fruits and vegetables and breathing through our nose! As Dr Louis said, inhaling has been thought of for thousands of years as being important, especially by yogis, but only about 15-18 years ago the physiological significance was discovered: as we breathe through our nose Nitric Oxide is carried to the lungs. Either situation can be super hard and tricky. Who we associate with (inside and outside of work) will impact us as humans. Before you read this article and maybe get influenced and decide to wake up early in the morning from tomorrow onwards – you need to understand why and how it will help you! To understand the power of magical mornings in shaping your future and narrowing the gap between your goals/dreams and reality, you need to understand an underlying structure called – Hierarchy. The textbook definition says – a system in which members of an organization or society are ranked according to relative status or authority. Therefore as chickens have a pecking order; similarly, humans have a hierarchy. Surprisingly you will see that people who are way above in the hierarchy wake up way early, and those at the bottom mostly wake up late, like you. Even at 10 am, you are hoping to catch a few more minutes of numb senses and distorted reality. Well, the bottom is way crowded, you got to get to the top! Here’s a list of a few people controlling the top and their waking up timing: Apple CEO Tim Cook wakes up at 3:45 am. Disney CEO Robert Iger wakes up at 4:30 am. Richard Branson gets started at 5:45 am. Warren Buffett begins his day at 6:45 am. Elon Musk rises at 7 am. This list is exhaustive. There are more than 20,000 people who wake up before 6 am and whose net worth is more than 100 million USD. However, if you are a serial procrastinator (which I am sure you are), these figures and numbers don’t mean shit to you. These are just a misrepresentation of highly complex data, which intends to spark a behavior change into your reluctant being. “This is shit and nothing more than that!” That’s what your sweet, doughy brain must be yelling into your ears! Let’s try this. What will you say if I promise that waking up between 4 am-5 am will – Increase your appetite Improve your self-confidence Improve your mental health Raise your self-esteem Improve your sex drive Increase your financial wealth Will you at least care to listen more? Awesome! Thank you for lending me your attention! Now, before we move ahead, you need to decide, why do you wish to wake up early? What is your Why? No one on this planet can change until they are themselves willing to. If you genuinely want to experience long-lasting rewards of waking up early and provide more stability to your body and mind, enriching your soul at the same time – you need to know your why. Let me share with you a little background about myself. I, too, like you, was a late riser. My philosophy was : Winners sleep late. Losers wake up early. Creative people/ Artists need to be up at nights to create legendary art. Real art is created when you are dead tired, burnt out, and dwindling between sleep & trying to stop those eyelids from shutting down on you. Routine is slavery. Order is constraining. Chaos is where lies success! I know countless miserable artists who follow the same doctrine as I did a few years ago. There is a handful of whom I indoctrinated. And, that is the reason now it is more critical for me to bring out this truth to you. Writing this article is my way of communicating with my previous nihilist self, who thought and preached Chaos is where lies the gold! In truth, there is a thin line between order and chaos – that is where lies mastery, creativity, financial wealth, a better partner, and a promising, rewarding future. If you are a nihilist or a procrastinator or a combination of both, if you have experienced the darkness, if you have remained up till 4 am’s and woke up at 5 pm’s – my dear friend, you are fortunate. You have already conquered chaos. Chaos (Yin) is your friend now. However, as you cannot be a crook nor a saint, similarly, you cannot choose either order or chaos. It would help if you balance yourself in the middle. You have already befriended, conquered, enslaved chaos. Now is the time to familiarize yourself with order, discipline – The Yang. To create an equilibrium between order and chaos, I had to venture into the unchartered waters
Last week we talked about what is really important in life. For all of us, life is a journey. Some are at the start, many in the middle, and for some the journey draws to an end. I want to start a series on the journey of life, because we all are in it. And when you talk journeys in the Bible we need to go straight to the big one… The Exodus. We’re going to start today looking at the call of God. ONLY ONE LIFE The first point to make is that you have only one life. You don’t get 2 or 3 lives, you’re not doing the Buddhist thing repeating life again and again, the Bible says you get one life… Hebrews 9:27 (ESV Strong's) And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, If you mess this one life up, you can’t replay it. I saw a sign which said, I’m a computer gamer. Don’t tell me to get a life, I have dozens of lives. But that’s fake, folks, it isn’t real. If you mess your one life up, if you waste years, if you invest you life into the wrong thing, you can’t die and start again. After his death, Martin Luther was found to have written 2 phrases in the margin of his Bible… "Born once - die twice; Born twice - die once". What he was saying was that, everyone is born once, then they die a physical death, followed by eternal death. But if you are born twice, that is born again, you only face physical death and receive eternal life. But we all will die, and we all get one shot at life. Maybe you think you’ve blown your shot at life. Maybe you’ve messed up or missed opportunities. Joel 2:25 (ESV Strong's) I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, It’s not too late, you can rediscover God’s calling on your life today, right here, and begin the journey, knowing your God is for you and can restore anything you’ve squandered so far on the journey. It’s not too late for you! YOU HAVE BEEN PREPARED Looking back at my life I see the hand of God preparing me to serve Him in my calling. I see things that have happened, good and bad people I have met, some who helped and some who hindered. I see Scriptures confirming, despite what others might say, the gift and call of God as a pastor. And God has been preparing you too, as was said to Esther… Esther 4:14 (ESV Strong's) And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Everything you’ve gone through, the success, the failures, the times you’ve let God and those who love you down. The pain of rejection, failure, loneliness, even foolish decisions, God can use it all for good ultimately when we obey Him… Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV Strong's) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Moses was called of God to lead the people on a great journey. You might say, well that was him, he’s was a great man, but I’m just me. I have this problem, this family, this disability, this hurt. But right at the start, when God called Moses for this great task, He was well aware of Moses’ failings. Moses had a rough upbringing, but he got a break when he was brought up in the Pharaoh’s palace. Then he lost his temper and killed a man, then ran away. He spent 40 years in the wilderness, and some of you here have spent years wandering away from God or church in a wilderness of your own. That doesn’t disqualify you, it just prepares you for the moment when God calls again. YOU ARE CALLED Exodus 3:2-4 (ESV Strong's) And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” God often uses something to capture of attention. What’s your burning bush. Maybe it is the loss of someone you love, perhaps a poor medical diagnosis. Maybe you’ve come to Ignite this morning with a sense in your heart that God has something for you. Today He is capturing your attention. And fair play to Moses, when God called he replied, “Here I am.” So what are you going to say right now to God? Lord, can’t fit You into my schedule. Lord, I’m not worthy. Lord, I’m offended by what the pastor did, or what this or that person said. Why not just put all that aside and say, here I am listening. (Lord speak to us about your calling upon our lives). THE RESPONSE TO THE CALL The Lord called Moses using a burning bush, but after initially being open to the voice of God, Moses pulled away when he caught a glimpse of what God was calling him to take on. Instead of offering obedience, he offered excuses, and most of us offer the same thing when God calls us. Here’s 5 he offered… 1. WHO AM I? Exodus 3:10-11 (ESV Strong's) Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” Moses first response to the call for leadership was, who am I? He doubted himself, he doubted that God could use someone like him. Moses struggled with his identity. He just didn’t feel qualified; he thought God had picked the wrong leader. And some of you here are like that… you doubt that God can use someone like you. You have hang ups, fears, failures. You’ve done things you are ashamed of, you’ve hurt people you were supposed to love. You’ve failed. Well Moses did all that, plus murder! What ever has happened in the past, whatever you feel towards yourself, you need to stop and recognise that God is God. He made you, He has a plan for you and He doesn’t make mistakes! All you need to do is walk with Him in obedience. Isaiah 29:16 (ESV Strong's) Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me”; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”? If you are a Christian, the Spirit of God lives in you, so you can’t use the excuse, who am I. Moses doubted who he was, wondering if God can use a screw up like him. But history shows God does use the base things of this world to confound the wise. Stop doubting the Potter and let Him shape you! God’s response was: Exodus 3:12 (ESV Strong's) He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” God said, It doesn’t matter who you are. I am with you… 2. WHO ARE YOU? So Moses countered with a second excuse: Who are You? Exodus 3:13 (ESV Strong's) Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” It’s one thing to doubt yourself, but another entirely to doubt God! Moses felt a lack of intimacy. He didn’t know God well enough to describe him to the people and lacked convictions concerning his relationship with God. God’s response was: Exodus 3:14 (ESV Strong's) God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” I AM WHO I AM. I AM ever present. I AM everything you need… Destiny is not something that happens to you. Destiny is a series of choices, and the first step towards your destiny in God is to decide to get to know Him. Do the Bible reading plan, come to church, hunger and thirst for righteousness. 3. WHO ARE THEY? Exodus 4:1 (ESV Strong's) Then Moses answered, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’” Moses doubted himself, and God, and now he moves on to doubting the people, and how they will respond. When God calls us one of our big fears is how others will respond. Moses felt intimidated. He was worried about the people’s reaction to him. He was fearful of what others would say. And we are no different today. Our world today is full of opinion, and every feels they can have their say no matter the consequences. People fire up and speak and hurt others all the time, and yes even in church. Listen, someone’s opinion is not more powerful than the call of God. God’s response was: When I’m finished, they’ll listen. In Exodus 4:2-9 God outlines 3 signs to confirm Moses’ calling as leader of the people… A staff that turns into a snake, skin that turns leprous then heals again, and water that turns into blood. Whatever anybody says, whatever they think of me, I know the calling of God on my life, I know my integrity and I see the fruit. 4. I DON’T HAVE THE SKILL Exodus 4:10 (ESV Strong's) But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.” Moses fretted about his inadequacies. Who would listen to him if he couldn’t even speak well? He looked at his skills and said, hey, I’m not equipped to minister like You’re calling me to, Lord! Many of you here look around and compare yourself with others. If they’re worse than you, you feel pride. If they’re better, you feel inadequate. Comparisons are deadly and never productive. God has placed within you skills, talents and abilities some of which you don’t even yet know about. If He calls you, He equips you, because He never calls you to fail and ruin your life. God’s response was: Guess who made your mouth? (4:11-12). Exodus 4:11-12 (ESV Strong's) Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” That’s why church is important if you want to serve the Lord… It equips you. My role as a pastor is to equip you to fulfil your destiny. Ephesians 4:11-12 (ESV Strong's) And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, So if you feel inadequate, take a number and stand in line because we all do. But then get equipped and trained the best way you can and watch God lead you into the most exciting destiny you could ever imagine. 5. FIND SOMEONE ELSE So finally, after all the excuses, we get to the truth…Moses felt inferior. He compared himself to others—even his brother—and decided that he came up short. Then he told God to find someone else… This made God angry… Exodus 4:13 (ESV Strong's) But he said, “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else.” God has a destiny on your life. God is calling you to serve and make a difference, to do something significant, something that will last for eternity… but are you saying, “No, Lord, send someone else?” There will always be more talented, better qualified, more attractive people out there. 1 Corinthians 1:27 (ESV Strong's) But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; And He chooses you. With all your hang ups, sins, feelings of inadequacy, he chooses you. Why? No idea, it’s His decision. There are many beautiful women in the world, movie stars, models and Kardashians. But I choose Fiona. I see in her something that all the others girls, for all their glamour, don’t have. She’s the one that I want, oo-oo-oo, honey. And in the same way, God chooses you. God’s response to Moses’ final excuse was: OK, I will let Aaron go with you . . . but I’m still calling you… Exodus 4:16 (ESV Strong's) He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him. I will speak to you, you to him and him to the people. But you’re still it, Moses. FIX YOUR EYES ON THE CALL So at the start of this great journey of faith, Moses heard the call of God. He made excuses, he ducked and weaved, but in the end, he decided to be obedient. And this call was important, because the burning bush and the call of God remained with him all his life, even in the tough times. When Pharaoh attacked, he could fix his eyes on the call. With his back to the Red Sea, he could fix his eyes on that call. When the people moaned, when they rebelled, when they sent him nasty emails and texts, when those closest to him, people he trusted actually rebelled against him… he stood through it all, because he had a call. So what is God calling you to today? Maybe it’s a call you thought long dead, but it has only been dormant. Maybe your searching right now for a place to fit, and a ministry to pursue. And when you know you’re called, doesn’t matter what they say, doesn’t matter what they do, you know in your heart of hearts that God has called you. WALK INTO YOUR DESTINY Robert Krulwich, science correspondent for NPR, believes it is impossible for humans to walk in a straight line Jan Souman, a scientist from Germany, conducted an experiment, where he blindfolded his subjects and then asked them to walk for an hour in a straight line. Without exception, people couldn’t do it. Of course, everybody thinks they’re walking in a straight line, until they remove the blindfolds and see their crooked path. According to this research, there’s only one way we can avoid our normal crooked course and actually walk in a straight line: if we fix our eyes on something ahead of us. Kurlwich concluded, “Without external cues, there’s apparently something in us that makes us turn [from a straight path].” Isaiah 30:21 (ESV Strong's) And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. To move towards our destiny, we must fix our eyes on Jesus, and listen because He is calling us. We must press on, and unless we fix our eyes on Jesus and His calling upon our lives, we will stray. Philippians 3:14 (ESV Strong's) I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Some of you here today have lost your way, but I want to give you he opportunity right now to refocus on the calling of God in your life. Are you tired, weary, hurt or discouraged? Some of you here believe the calling is lost forever, but it’s not. God is patiently waiting for you to stop giving excuses and start giving obedience.

What do you need to believe when you ask someone for 15 minutes of their time? What’s the underlying emotional and rational DNA of true belief that is pulsing through your brain? And even beyond this, it would be helpful to remind our listeners about our mission here at the Market Dominance Guys…what’s the real reason these nuances and steps and tactics of market dominance even matter? Because, after all, if we don't get past the discovery step consistently we can never dominate our market. So all of these steps are not necessarily put in place for the salesperson themselves to be successful, although that is great byproduct; The real underlying purpose of all of this is to provide an alternative or an adjunct to the traditional funding, mergers, and acquisitions as a way of executing corporate strategy …That’s actually the purpose of all this…as my esteemed and candid co-host is very fond of saying, “You can go sell any damn way you want…if you DON’T want to dominate markets. Why? No one will care.” In this episode, I poke Chris into a controlled burn on the mathematics, the reasoning, and the basic economics of how to dominate your market…and why it matters even more in today’s booming economy. What if you never had to look for a job? What if they just came to you? Is that even possible? That is exactly how it worked out for this week's guest Beth Bazley who is a Director for Save the Children. But that didn't happen by accident. While raising her children, she was also busy cultivating a community, volunteering for organizations that mattered to her, and doing the work that no one else wanted. Her family life evolved in a way she never expected when tragedy struck and her husband died when their girls were still young. Her community embraced her and, when the time was right, she went right back to volunteering. A few years - and several international trips later - she knew she was ready for something new. She cleaned her closet (literally) and went out shopping for her life ahead. And that's when the phone rang with her next opportunity. In this episode, you'll hear: Why Beth chose the hardest jobs as a volunteer What Beth found most rewarding about volunteering Who rescued them when they experienced great tragedy How Beth moved forward after her husband's death with their Family Playbook Why Beth kept volunteering even after her family changed Why Beth believes in karma How Beth showed her kids a real work/life balance Why Beth recommends a different work/life path for her daughters Why "No is a perfectly good answer" is frequently Beth's opening line when she is asking for time or money
Ceri Wheeldon of Fab after Fifty talks to therapist Wendy Gregory about how to recognise a narcissist. A topic which has proven to be of enormous interest when we have discussed dating over 50 on the Fab after Fifty website. This is the first of a series of 3 interviews on recognising and dealing with narcissists. In this episode Wendy will share:How to recognise the signs of narcissistic behaviour. The three phases of a relationship with a narcissist - love bombing, devalue, discard. What is involved in each stageWhat is gaslighting ?Wendy's contact details: theWendyHouse57@gmail.com or TheWendyHouse facebook pageThe patterns of narcissistic behaviour ----more----Full episode transcript:[00:00:06] I'm Ceri Wheeldon. Welcome to the Fab after Fifty podcast. Leading the pro age conversation, talking about all things life after 50. [00:00:19] Hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Fab after Fifty podcast. I'm very pleased to have with me today Wendy Gregory. Now Wendy is a counsellor, psychologist and writer. Hello and welcome to Fab after 50. [00:00:32] Hi, Ceri. [00:00:34] What are we going to be talking about today? [00:00:37] Today we're talking about narcissistic personality disorder and initially on how, you know, if you're actually involved or in a relationship with a narcissist. [00:00:49] There is an awful lot of media coverage about narcissism today is that because there are more of them out there with it, because we're just more aware of what a narcissistic personality is. [00:00:59] Yeah, that's a difficult one really to pinpoint. And I personally think that there probably are more narcissistic people simply because parenting styles have changed over the years and become much more child centered as a lot more children are growing up believing that they're special. And this that doesn't help. But we don't actually have any numbers. I mean, the thing with narcissistic personality disorder is that very few narcissists will ever present for therapy. So they're largely undiagnosed. [00:01:33] Right. And what exactly is a narcissistic personality disorder? [00:01:38] Okay. Narcissistic personality disorder is a developmental disorder. There's often confusion. People think it's a mental illness and it isn't. If it were a mental illness, we could treat it with drugs or whatever and cure it. And it isn't actually the case. So it's about ways of behaving that are not what we'd call normal. I hate to use the word normal really as a psychologist, but. But they're not normal. They affect their relationships and more importantly they affect everyone that they're involved with. So there is narcissism is on a continuum. So this very low level, what we call a covert narcissists, there's that really quite hard to spot and generally they go through life without being spotted and then going upwards to the extreme and the overt, malignant, sadistic narcissist type, much more obvious. And it's really a collection of behaviours. So I'll just give you a few examples and a grandiose sense of self-importance. They're always very grandiose. So they pick themselves up. They're boasting, they claim to have done things well, make up qualifications and clams that just don't exist. And they believe that they are special and unique and they have an absolute need for excessive admiration. So that ties in with boasting a lot and a lack of empathy. So they really, really don't empathize with other people. And and that makes them obviously very difficult to have any sort of satisfactory relationship with them, very manipulative. [00:03:15] So their whole aim really in life is to get what they want and at the expense of everybody else. All right. I mean, I know recently there've been a few examples in terms of films, one I watched on, I think on either Netflix or Prime was Dirty John, which is a true life story which gets quite horrific in fact in terms of how this poor woman was abused without giving away the ending but Dirty John well, I can be quite open here. I mean, I haven't been in a similar relationship myself with a very different ending. But you almost see the patterns, you recognized it as it was happening. And then you think, why didn't I recognise it when it was happening to me? [00:03:57] Did you see, Dirty John? And yes, it was an absolute classic pattern of narcissistic behaviour. And as you said, we won't give any spoilers, but he was at the extreme end of narcissistic personality disorder. [00:04:15] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So for those that haven't seen it. If you think you're involved in a strange relationship, look it up because if a friend who you think is in a controlling relationship. Also, if they watch it, they might help you understand why she puts up with it in quotes behaviour that perhaps you wouldn't. Maybe understand where she's coming from. How to say to people, how do you know if you're involved with somebody who is a narcissist? What should would we be looking out for? [00:04:43] All right. Well, the symptoms that I've just mentioned, obviously, and that there's a pattern to the relationship and narcissistic relationships are done in three phases. And so the first stage is we call it love bombing. The second is devaluing and the third is discarding. Initially, narcissists love bomb you, so that's something to watch out for, it's too much, too soon. They shower you with attention. They may even shower you with gifts and expensive presents, but not always. But they shower you with attention. They want commitment very, very early on because of course, they cant manipulate you if you're not committed to them. So they start talking about a seriously long term relationship, might even ask you to marry them on your first date, tell you that you're soul mates and but things tend to watch out for really are that it is too much too soon. But also that if they seem to have interests that are exactly the same as yours now that's obvious. It might just be coincidence that they do that to get you to feel that you are soul mates. You know, you're meant to be together and so on. So some of the examples I can give and because I see a lot of clients now who've been in narcissistic relationships and one of the examples which have been given permission behind by the client to share was the man who had been involved in a relationship with an extreme narcissistic woman. [00:06:15] And looking back on the first date, he was an amateur wrestler in his spare time and on their first date, she claimed to be an amateur wrestler as well. Unusual. That is a really unusual thing. But he said, you know, now that I can laugh because how did that fit to the very petite frame and just think, how did I believe? But at the time, I thought, oh, great. Amazing. I found someone who's got the same interests as me. Things like, if you like Kate Bush, they will have all her albums . And then they will say that they've been to see her live. They might even say they know her well. They've got a personal connection with Kate, but you can do a little bit of digging around that. You know, you can actually catch them out, ask them what from some of the tracks are and help them or where they were last on live. Something like that. You can catch them out and also they tend to be in multiple relationships. So it's very likely that when you first date a narcissist, they will still be involved with someone else. Obviously, they try to cover their tracks quite well. But just doing a little bit of digging and if they're vague about where they live or who they live with or when they broke up with their previous partner. That is a red flag really for you need to push for more detail. But how can you, you say push for more detail in what way, because if its new, you wouldn't expect to know their wearabouts seven days a week, 24 hours a day, because you've your life hopefully that you will be living as well. [00:07:50] Absolutely. Absolutely. But as we said with the love bombing stage, they will be contacting you constantly. So and on the first date, I mean, I because I have been involved in two narcissistic relationships, but the most recent one and he asked me before the date ended it, when can I see you again. On my way home on the train. I was getting texts from him. I can't believe I've met such a such a lovely woman. The next morning in a more texts, more texts, more texts, phoning every day. So the attention is constant. So back to back to the red flag. That's a warning sign because people that are mentally healthy people don't do instant relationships. They take time to get to know you. They don't do all this love bombing and too much too soon. But as for asking them where they live. I mean, you don't want to make it an interrogation on a first date, but you don't have an interview. Yeah. But can't ask to prove who you are, do you have a recent bank statement and you cant ask that, but just be aware and if it is vague. I mean, one of the really common ones is, oh, I'm staying with friends at the moment while I'm looking for a place of my own. And then that gets them out of ever having to invite you there to their place. Oh, no, you can't come here. [00:09:11] Now we have mobile phones haven't we we but when we were a lot younger. Obviously, when you reach your 50s , our first experience of dating was when we were in our teens and early 20s, and we had fixed landlines then. But people called you at home. So you had to be in a physical place, didn't you, to take those calls? [00:09:29] Yes, you did. I mean, we didn't even have voicemail. [00:09:34] Whereas now ,with mobile phones, you could be anywhere. Absolutely. You could be anywhere. And have more than one mobile. [00:09:43] They do. That's very common that they have, you know, mine had four in the end, four different mobiles. Yeah. Yeah. So, yes, that's another sign up. Another warning sign. If if whenever you ring it goes up, it goes to voicemail and it's a little bit suspicious. They usually will call you back. Know they'll find a different place to be, although not for a walk if they're living with someone and they'll call you back. Or they'll pick up the phone and say, I'm in a meeting I'll call you back. If that's a little bit of a warning sign, if it keeps happening, obviously sometimes people are unavailable and you'd expect that. But if if it keeps happening, that they very rarely actually pick up the phone when you ring. Why? No one is that busy. Yeah. [00:10:30] That's look at the early stages. Yeah. But what if you miss all the signs and you find yourself in stage 2 . Stage 2. [00:10:40] That's called the devaluing stage and the narcissist will have put you on a pedestal during the first phase and then they start knocking you off the pedestal. So basically, they start devaluing you. They start criticising you. They start blaming you for everything. They'll turn everything around and make it your fault. And this is called gaslighting. And you start (after the film) The old black and white film where the husband was plotting to have the wife murdered and he made her think that she was going insane. And that's where the term comes from. And it's very common touch. You feel as if you are going insane because that's what a narcissist will do. They also can pick you up and put you down. So one minute they're telling you how much they love you, what a wonderful person you are, blah, blah, blah. And the next day, not contactable or they're criticising you constantly. They very often start to disappear. I think the term is ghosting now. They'll just disappear. You can't get hold of them. You don't know where they are for sometimes two or three days at times and sometimes a week. And you become very, very anxious in the relationship. You feel very confused. You don't understand what's happening. And then all of a sudden they're back. No. Reassure you. Oh, no, no, no. It's you. You've got trust issues. You've got jealousy problems. You need to get that sorted to help. And you do start to feel as if you're going crazy. You really do. So, yeah, that's that's that's the second phase. So if you start to well it's abusive basically. And that is quite subtle often and you don't realise it's happening for some time. But once you do, you need to try and get out of it, try and pull away from it. [00:12:29] And also we hear that abuse can be financial cant it. Yes, it can. If you like, very controlling in all aspects of your life. Certainly. [00:12:38] Very often they do. Yes. And they will also often leave. They tend to groom and groom people. And this is you know, it's not just men that are narcissists are female narcissists as well. But similarly, there are a lot more of this around. But, yes, they will groom you for it to meet their needs. So sexually. Financial needs are very often borrow money or steal money, actually defraud you and of your money. So, yeah, I mean that's financial abuse. [00:13:10] And also my understanding is that from personal experience, they would try to isolate you from those people who are close to you who might become more aware of that behaviour. And I mean, if you look at Dirty John, that was a classic example in that film. It was. It was, yes. But they do try to isolate you from people that are important to you or they feel can influence you. [00:13:31] Yeah. Yeah. They've tried to separate you from your friends and family very often. Yes. So other people because it's very often your friends or your family that spot that there's something not right. And they will be telling you, you know, this isn't right. You need to. You need to end this, you need to get out there. So, of course, they don't want that because they want to be the person in control. And everything is about control with a narcissist. Everything they do. They have to be in control. They actually just can't cope with not being in control. So, yes, they will try to isolate you very often from your friends or family . And presumably at that devalue stage is when they can they can actually have total control over you. [00:14:12] Yes. Yes, they do that. Yes. [00:14:14] They have total control over your mind or your body or your needs, everything. Yes. [00:14:22] And then the last stage then is the discard stage isnt it. [00:14:25] Yes. Yes. And in the discard stage, they will be moving on to what's referred to as a new source of supply narcissist and will have at least one, usually several sources, its called sources of narcissistic supply. [00:14:41] So they will be they usually will have started another relationship. They may have been having another relationship all along, but they'll be on to the next person that they that they start love bombing and the ghosting and the disappearing will become more intense. Oh, I'm going away on business undoing this or they'll use their health as an excuse. That's a common one. Got to have an operation. They've got to have an MRI scan. Weirdly, at 9 p.m. in the evening or any kind of excuse, they will gradually, gradually withdraw. [00:15:15] And sometimes it's the other way round. They will do something so awful that it prompts you to end the relationship. So either way, they they want to cut off from you. But a narcissist even when they end, they will keep coming back because they like to have you available in case their new source of supply falls through. So they tend to keep you dangling on a piece of string called hoovering. And every now and then they keep coming back just to make sure you're still there. Make sure you're still available. And that's really when you stop to think you're going insane. And it's not because they care about you. It really is not interested at all. They just want to know that you're available. [00:16:00] Yes,soit's a fairly unsavory character type to get involved with. Really? [00:16:07] It is. And people will often say, well, how did he get involved with them in the first place? And that's the other thing about narcissists is they are always, without exception, extremely charming and charismatic. You can think of a few notable and famous people. One of them lives in America. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. I dont want to get sued for libel or anything, but I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. So, yes, they are extremely charming and charismatic, and that's what draws us to them in the first place. And obviously, we don't realise at the time that it's not genuine, but it's it's all for show. That isn't who they are. In fact, they're actually quite empty. There's nothing there. [00:16:48] They don't really have a personality. So with all of this are there typical timescales, because they talked about the three stages. Is it sort of, I don't know, maybe there's not really been any research to quantify. Are there specific timeframes? [00:17:05] I don't think so, you're right Ceri, I don't think there has been any research into it. I actually think it's really variable. And with a covert narcissist, I mean, they often are married, sometimes their whole lives, have families and everything. So it's can be lifelong or with the more extreme type of narcissists, it tends to be much more short lived because their behaviour is so extreme. They can't really keep a relationship going for very long. And I'm going to say, mine lasted nine months but it may be sort of up to two years. But of course, if you've had children with them, then that is a completely different ballgame because you're never rid of them really. If you've got contact with them, then it becomes much, much more difficult and much more complicated. [00:17:55] I know some of the discussions that come up in the we have a Facebook page where we've post articles and I included one from you Wendy about dating narcissism. Yes. But people have commented that they'd come out of long marriages with narcissists that maybe lasted 30 years. Yeah. And when they've left they have been devastated and broken at the end of it. So the fact it was so long. Not really understanding what was happening. [00:18:21] That's not fair. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. [00:18:25] Thank you so much for this, Wendy. Obviously, we talk about the narcissistic personality disorder today, but we're going to do a couple more episodes, aren't we? There's too much to cover in one, but there are two more episodes at least that were going to be doing. And the next one, I think you've got sound is talking about how you recover from having been in a relationship like that. Indeed , yes. So thank you very much for joining us today. [00:18:47] How could people reach you, Wendy. They can reach me via my Facebook page, which is called the Wendy House or my email, which is theWendyHouse57@gmail.com [00:19:04] We'll have details in the in the overview as well. But meantime, people want to be in touch with you that's how to do it and I look forward to sharing. I guess, episode two in our narcissistic series. [00:19:19] Yes. You're welcome, Ceri. Thank you. Bye bye. Bye bye. [00:19:29] Thank you for joining us today. Please do subscribe and also send the link to friends and be part of the pro age conversation. Life really is meant to be fabulous at every age, but especially after 50.
So yeah... another one that is a little looong. Why? No reason, I guess. This one just keeps giving. This episode we test out having patrons call in and it is a semi-success. Watch out for more call in episodes. We also, shuffle around a bunch of topics like the square in the room, the new Mexican champ, Japanese appreciation of the culture, learning new things, and theory versus psychedelics to treat mental issues. Of course, with the classic pendejadas sprinkled everywhere. Thanks for listening and stay tuned…
In a very bizarre out of nowhere move in the late 80s, Dic made a kid's gameshow. Why? No one really knows, and for the most part, everyone's kind of forgotten about it. ...Mainly because, it's genuinely very forgettable, barring the celebrity specials. Taking the newlywed game and giving it a sibling-based twist, I'm Telling has two closely related children answer specific questions about each other, hoping that they'll both say the same thing in order to earn points and get access to the elusive Pick-A-Prize Arcade where they could win fantastic prizes. Sound familiar? Well yeah, it will do. It's a very generic concept for a show, much less one aimed at kids. As a direct result of this fact, we only spend half this episode actually talking about it, with the latter half dedicated to discussing far more interesting and unique gameshows from the UK. The most notable things we find about it are its creator and some of the young celebs that found their way onto the show back in the day...but who are they? It's time for another update in one of our favorite series on this podcast: Classics From Other Countries. Normally on this show we like to consider children's picture books from America, determining if they deserve their "classic" status. But how fair is that? Why not consider picture books deemed classics in other countries? We did Duck, Death and Tulip via Germany. We did The Gruffalo via the U.K. So let's jump on a plane and fly ourselves to Australia for our first Mem Fox classic. What will Kate think when she encounters a book with a title composed entirely out of names? And how many children's librarians out there can remember the full name at all times? Inquiring minds want to know. To get a full dose of info on this book, there is no better place to go than Mem Fox's own website. Here's the Wilfrid page, chock full of fascinating info: https://memfox.com/gossip-behind-mems-books/wilfrid-gordon-mcdonald-partridge/ Bradley Whitford, everyone! Reading this book! Why? No idea! But it's there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dLCKYTbR5c And while we're doing videos, this one about a staged production with puppets is worth your time too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wu5ldoGd68 For the full Show Notes, please visit: http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/2019/04/22/fuse-8-n-kate/

Who is going to pay for Kamala Harris’ “Free Medicare for all?” Linda explains why this would be a catastrophic, cost-prohibitive, mistake for us all. DrRon & Linda take on the Democratic leadership for ignoring the enormous problems at our southern border with thousands of illegals breaching the border, fentanyl snuck across that could exterminate millions of Americans and child sex trafficking rings causing the systematic rape of hundreds of female children and young adults. Why NO outrage over this by the Dems? Next, the conservative coffee couple compare the amazing success of Walmart against the failures of every government agency and program ever devised. Yes, they are from the government, but they are not here to help us. Are you down for interesting coffee conversation where you hear the real news and lively conservative opinion? 2019 Prediction I see more and more people getting into podcasting who Want to spend zero money Spend very little time on creating content Make large amounts of money - quickly My prediction is 98% of the people who get into podcasting for the SOLE reason of making money fast will quit and say podcasting does not work. This episode is to educate you with knowledge so you can make an educated decision. Keep mind, you DO NOT have to make money with your podcast. Many, many, many podcasters do it for the love of the topic. Because of My Podcast: Emily Prokop Will Be on TV 1:50 Emily Prokop from The Story Behind Podcast and EPodcast Productions has had "Because of My Podcast" Stories in the past (as she got a book deal). Now because of her podcast (which brought her a book deal), she is going to be on Inside Edition. How cool is that? Congrats Emily Update on Rode Rodecaster Pro 4:10 Last week we had three people share their insights into the Rode Rodecaster Pro, and I had not tied the unit into Skype yet. I agree when you use the phone, it sounds like, the phone. I had Jonathan Bloom from Weekly Awesome and Miss Ileane Smith join me on Ask the Podcast Coach via the wired TRRS cable, using Skype and out sounded much better. Johnathan was on Skype in his phone and Ileane was using an ATR2100 and sounded awesome. The Potential Harm of Launching Your Podcast With a Patreon 7:28 While I realize that starting to promote a patreon account the minute you start podcasting may seem like a great idea, my worry is this is another criteria (like your download stats) to gauge your process. I'm not saying it's wrong, but I want you to go into this with your eyes wide open. How Do We Get Sucked In? There are people on patreon making thousands of dollars a month. In the same way, that ice skaters, musicians, comedians, and athletes make their craft look easy, so do these podcasters. You talk into a mic, ask people for money, and watch the cash roll in. Nothing could be further from the truth How Do You Feel About PBS Pledge Drives? Think about how you feel when watching a PBS pledge drive. You’re enjoying the smooth tones of James Taylor as you reminisce about the first time you heard this song on the radio. The memories make you feel warm and then BOOM! We need some money. If you don’t have a relationship with PBS, (and found this while channel surfing) I’m going to bet these interruptions are quite annoying. Without a relationship, pledge drives make you want to change the channel (at least for me it does). So does this mean that your pledge drives in the early days of your podcast is a bad idea? I guess it all depends on how entertaining and creative you are in asking for support. Things To Consider As a New Podcaster While launching with a Patreon campaign allows you to practice your pitch, and gets your audience used to hearing your pledge drive in episodes, there are a few things to consider: You may find yourself focusing more on your Patreon rewards instead of focusing on making great content that inspires your audience to tell a friend. You can practice your pledge drive pitch in the basement. You don’t have a relationship with these your audience and yet you're asking for a favor. Unless you organized a focus group, you may not be delivering value (and yet you are asking for value in return). Your Mom is not a focus group. If you are doing great you can expect 3% of your audience to join your campaign. If you have 100 listeners this means you MIGHT get 3. According to graphtreon.com in January of 2019: 704,041 creators received a total of $1,512,275. That's a little over $2 per patron. The lack of patrons can damage your attitude and make you want to quit your podcast. If your sole reason for starting your podcast was for quickly getting money, you should stop. The Pressure of Patreon 20:20 Jordan Harbinger gave up being a lawyer to do a podcast where he interviews people and talks about communications and social dynamics. On Friday he answers questions from his audience. One other thing, Jordan gets millions of downloads for this show. A listener of his was having a hard time finding the courage to launch his content. The person was already worried about the business side of his content, and he had been sitting on it for two years. Jordan brings up a great point of the pressure of running your podcast as a business right out the door. That pressure could hinder your creativity, affect your attitude in a negative way and hinder you from creating a great show that will attract an audience. Keep in mind, no audience - no money. With this added pressure, the podcast might not be fun. Also, keep in mind when you first start out you're not going to be as good as you will be in a few years. He brought up a great point about how easily we can talk to people we would normally be attracted when we are in a relationship. Why? No pressure. He explains that when he first started he just liked talking about it to his friends. That lead to him talking to others in bars, which lead to... being known as the Larry King of Podcasting. You can't help, serve, or entertaining anyone with your files on your hard drive. Just launch. Check out Jordan's Show at www.jordanharbinger.com and check out his level one FREE Human Dynamics course. Check out my interviews with Jordan here and here. But Shouldn't You Treat Your Podcast Like a Business? 32:50 I've had people who have businesses that sell ads in their show who treat their podcast as a business. They have to. While you are starting out, you may not be in this situation. It may be smart to plan ahead, but it is a bit like buying a crib for your future child when you are still a virgin. Most businesses the podcast is not the business. It is the part of the marketing arm of the business to promote their products. When your product is Patreon, that is fine but realize that most podcasters who are doing it for a living have multiple streams of income (products, ads, affiliate sales, live events). Also, if your podcast is not a business or promoting a business - it leads me to my next point. Shut Up and Have Fun With Your Podcast If you are doing a podcast for fun, and meet like-minded people or friend and family - then do that. Pay no attention to the podcasters chasing a buck. There are SO MANY WAYS to benefit from podcasting (see because of my podcast) and money is just ONE of them. When you compare your podcast to another it - unless it someone doing the same exact show with the exact same background, it is NEVER a fair comparison. Don't worry about the money, the downloads, new and noteworthy, Apple charts, and just HAVE FUN doing your podcast and see where it leads you. Canva Vs Snappa Graphics can help attract attention to show notes, your episodes, etc. I was working on making a new image for my YouTube channel and found Snappa. I had heard about it. I have been using Canva.com for a while. After banging my head against the wall to have my image show up correctly in YouTube, Snappa seemed to have the edge. They have more photos, and when making a YouTube channel artwork Snappa worked better. However, you typically make a YouTube Channel artwork once or twice a year. Other items I make weekly. Canva has multiple folders you can create, they make copying and resizing images easier, and while you will still probably occasionally have to pay for an image even if you are paying for their $12 a month "business" package, I found it better thought out. You can crop images while you are using them. With Snappa, you had to crop it before bringing it into your graphic (how do I know how much I need to crop it if I haven't seen it with the other items?). A Free Image Strategy Canva.com, Snappa.com, and Adobe Spark all have free versions. If you're on a tight budget and don't mind taking more time to browse through multiple portals (along with places like pixabay) you might try signing up for a free account on all three. For me, I live Canva. The offer tutorials to help you get the most out of the service. Work With Me If you're ready to start your podcast, I have multiple plans for multiple budgets. I want to help you build a successful podcast. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I also have a podcast quick start program for those who are looking to get up and running quickly and then have a brief mentorship.

More than one-third of Americans are obese, although many have been dieting for decades. Why? No diet in the world will work if your metabolism has turned toxic, and no disease can be healed if your cell membranes are unhealthy. Cell membranes require certain types of fat to perform their metabolic duties, but no amount of “good” dietary fat will be beneficial if your gallbladder is ailing or you have congested bile. This is the reason ketogenic type diets often fail. Ann Louise Gittleman offers a new wave of hope! Bad CGI month, um, I mean Horror Month as we review the Canadian Indy film and cult classic Cube 2 Hypercube. What is a Hypercube? It is a four dimensional death trap where time, gravity and the law of physics are random. If that wasn’t enough the cube if full of random death traps that make jigsaw squeamish. Why? No one knows. The government and super secret hacker boogeyman Alex Trusk built for…something and are experimenting on people by killing them for…reasons. Of course one of the subjects is a sleeper agent. Spoiler - everybody dies. Cube 2 is a weird and wild mind bleep. If you don’t mind it actually not having a resolution or making sense, it is an amazing sci-fi, horror, suspense survival drama that even bad CGI and a mystery box JJ Abrams would be ashamed of can ruin. Why is it that science can’t quite explain why we need to die or how free will works? Michael Brooks joins me for a fascinating discussion on things that baffle science. This weekend I had "Christmas" with most of my family as my brother goes to Florida for Christmas with his in-laws. We bought my nieces and nephews who are ages 8 and under some of the toys we grew up playing. I noticed that these games are often very simplistic. What does this have to do with podcasting? Becuase sometimes we make things harder than they need to be. Because Of My Podcast - I'm Getting to Talk to Some Very Cool People Darryl E. McCullough Darryl hosts the Full Circle Podcast and helped launch National Podcast Power conference. Daryl has met actors, authors, politicians, YouTube Stars and more. If you want to get doors opened, start a podcast today. Keeping Simple Is Sometimes All You Need I spent the weekend playing with my great-nieces and nephew. We brought out some classc board games. Battling Tops My entire family ended up playing this game by the end of the day. What makes it a great game is that it is easy to learn and the action is fast and furious. The tops come out the gate very fast and often one or two of the tops go flying out of the arena. You pull a "string" (now a plastic tie with teeth) and the tops go into what amounts to a bowl and bounce off each other. The last one in the bowl spinning wins. Simple. Checkers This is another game that takes very little skill, and you get to the action fairly quickly. It takes some thought and strategy. Hide and Go Seek This game requires the ability to count to ten Mississippi. There is suspense, and tension as you wait to see if you can get home without being caught. Here again, it requires a good hiding spot and strategy to determine when you would try to "go home." I love helping people understand the best path to get to your podcast going in the right direction. There are times when people ask a question and they expect a simple answer, but the absolute truth about podcasting is there are very few absolute truths. The other thing I want to talk about today is letting your personality shine. So many people make podcasting harder than it is. Don't get me wrong there is still a learning curve, but some time we make the curve much higher than it needs to be. Sometimes Too Much Technology Can Take the Fun Out of Things I do a show called "Ask the Podcast Coach" and at one point I had a cohost located in another state, a phone line coming in (with a screen where I could put people on hold and see my callers), and I had a chat room. I streamed it live on Google Hangouts (now YouTube live), as well as mixlr.com and spreaker.com When I started the show I needed eight arms to start everything. My co-host and I Jim Collison (from theaverageguy.tv) noticed that most of our questions come in via chat. We still offer the ability to join the Google Hangout, but I would say 98% of our questions come in via chat. We also stream the show via Google Hangout and based on audience feedback, only stream via mixlr.com (for those who want an audio only). Simple Can Work and Sound Great My friend Cale Nelson from the Modern Christian Men show (and previously Ham Radio 360) got an email from a listener. In it, they said, " You have always sounded great! Better than some national broadcasts/podcasts." So what equipment does Cale Use? Did he spend thousands of dollars? He is using an ATR2100 Microphone, Yamaha MG12XU Mixer, Zoom H2n Digital Recorder. Record Locally to Zoom, then Edit in Audacity. Where You Can Find Me In Person 22:41 February 8 -10 Orlando Florida Podfest.us I will be speaking on AI and Podcasting and I will be Roasted. February 28 - March 2 in San Diego California Social Media Marketing World Speaking on Podcast Monetization What Podcast is the Easiest Show To Create? 26:48 There are a number of formats you can choose from when creating a podcast. You can do a show with just you (a monologue) You can do a show with a co-host You can do a show with a panel Looking at the above list, one might think a solo show would be the easiest. Why? No scheduling conflicts, no arguments over the direction of the show. You have total control. So what is the problem? You need to be comfortable talking to the wall. It takes a little confidence to pull this off. Michael Hyatt is one of my favorite authors. I read his book Platform every January to kick of my year. Michael has publicly stated that he is not comfortable doing a solo show. So then doing a show with a co-host is easier? This sounds true up front. You don't have to do all the work, and there is another person to help promote the show. But you now have the occasional challenge of scheduling conflicts. The more people you have, the harder it is to get everyone together. The solution is to pick a time when everyone knows you will be recording and make a commitment to that time. This is easier said than done, especially when multiple time zones are included, and multiple life configurations are included (kids, jobs, etc). So again, it depends. Taking Phone Calls I think we all grew up listening to radio shows who take phone calls and we want to recreate that scenario. So how do you take phone calls. The answer? It depends. If you are doing a solo show, you can get a Google Voice Number or a Toll-Free Number at Podcastvoicemail.com and plug the phone into a mixer using your headphone jack. Then you can talk into your microphone that goes into the mixer, you plug the phone into the mixer, and send the mix of you and the phone out to a service like Mixlr.com Send the same output into a portable recorder like a Zoom H1. But what if you have a co-host? What if you want a phone screener? Then things get way more complicated including two mix-minus setups that I won't even attempt to explain it here (it would be something we could do some consulting on). The bottom line is, "It depends" Sometimes You Have to Jump In I bought myself a new 55" TV for Christmas. I brought it home, and went to put it on my old TV stand, and it was too big. I had to buy a bigger stand. Then I went to plug it into my sound bar, and you guessed it. Even though both the TV and the soundbar were from the same company, I needed to go buy a new cable to plug in. Some things you only learn things by doing them. Show Notes We talk Pope Francis, poorly. Prophets make messes, but no one doubted that Jeremiah was a prophet and not a mess himself. We're not saying Pope Francis is teaching heresy or promoting immorality, but there sure is a lot of, PERHAPS, intended ambiguity. Why? No idea. Maybe to make it easier to lay the ground for further future nudges in one direction or another. One thing we hate is the hyper-American-Politcalization of Pope Francis. We try our darnedest to get around it, or address it for what it is, but we can't help but remember JP2 more fondly.

Welcome to GlitterShip, episode 33 for February 14, 2017. This is your host, Keffy, and I’m super excited to be sharing these stories with you. We have two stories this week, "Curiosity Fruit Machine" by S. Qiouyi Lu and "The Slow Ones" by JY Yang. Even better, S. narrated both stories for us! S. Qiouyi Lu is a writer, artist, narrator, and translator; their stories have appeared in Strange Horizons and Daily Science Fiction, and their poetry has appeared in Liminality and Uncanny. They are a 2016 graduate of the Clarion West writers workshop and a dread member of the Queer Asian SFFH Illuminati. Find them online at s.qiouyi.lu or follow them on Twitter at @sqiouyilu. JY Yang is a queer, non-binary writer and editor who has short fiction published or forthcoming in places like Uncanny, Lightspeed, Strange Horizons and Tor.com. Their debut novellas, THE RED THREADS OF FORTUNE and THE BLACK TIDES OF HEAVEN, will be out from Tor.com Publishing in Fall 2017. They live in Singapore, edit fiction at Epigram Books, and swan about Twitter as @halleluyang. Curiosity Fruit Machine by S. Qiouyi Lu "What is it?" Alliq says. Jalzy runs eir hands over the object. We should probably wait for the others to catch up so we can get the engineering team to take a proper look." Alliq's voice fades into a mumble. Jalzy presses eir nose to the glass front of the object and brushes a tight curl of hair out of eir face. Ey can just barely make out some lettering—PAY. Eir grasp of 21st-century English is weak, but this seems to be a money machine of some sort. Surely, ey thinks, bringing eir arm down, a money machine can't hurt em... "Don't—!" The object whirs to life, three wheels inside the glass case spinning; a few of the bulbs lining the edge buzz and spark. Jalzy jumps back. Oh crap. Ccccccclackkkclackkclackkk—didn't old-timey explosives make that sound? Or were explosives more of a tick-tock sound? One of the wheels clicks as it stops—Jalzy grabs Alliq by the wrist, drags xem to a safe spot behind a wall of heavy crates—then another click—they brace themselves—and—click! Alliq flinches. Jalzy waits a moment—a dud, perhaps?—before peeking past the edge of the crates. The object's face shows one symbol, then two of the same symbol. The first is an oblong, yellow shape, and the next two are round, red orbs connected by an inverted green V. "I think we're safe," Jalzy whispers. Alliq comes up from xyr braced position. "Goddammit, don't do this to me," Alliq hisses. Xe's sweating a little, xyr forehead shining, and Jalzy has to suppress a giggle. "Hey, we're fine, right?" Ey steps out from behind the crates and goes back to the object. Ey crouches down. There's a metal trough underneath the symbols, but it's empty. Do they need to put something in there? "Jalzy," Alliq says from over eir shoulder, "those are—those are pictures of fruit." "What's a fruit?" "Seriously?" Alliq says, voice laden with exasperation. When Jalzy gives xem a blank stare, Alliq points at the oblong symbol and says, "Look, the first one is a lemon. Those two on the right, those are cherries." Jalzy squints. "I thought 'cherry' and 'lemon' were just colors. You know, like how we also have orange nutriblocks in our sustenance packs." Alliq snorts. "You know there used to be a fruit called 'orange', right? It wasn't just a color. Those are actually flavors. They came from these." Jalzy straightens up and paces around the object. "So what is this, a fruit-making machine?" "Did you never take terrabiology?" Alliq says. "History of Earth? Anything?" "Look, I took astrophysics so I wouldn't have to deal with so much reading, okay," Jalzy says, flipping eir crown of curls over eir shoulder. "So just educate me already, O All-Knowing Alliq." Alliq crosses xyr arms over xyr chest in a huff. "Fruit comes from seeds, not machines. I mean, we perfected the science to duplicate the flavors all the way back in the 21st century, but we never really got down how to duplicate the organic material. So the best we've got now is our nutriblocks." Xe unfolds xyr arms and circles around the object. "This—this is something else entirely. I don't think it actually has anything to do with food." "So, if it doesn't seem to be a weapon, and it doesn't produce anything... wanna pull the lever again and see what happens?" Jalzy grins slyly at Alliq, who raises xyr hands in surrender. "I'm going to check out the other room. If I were you, I'd just keep doing inventory until engineering gets here and can confirm what kind of object that is." Jalzy sticks out eir tongue. "Good thing you're not me," ey says. And ey pulls the lever again. END The Slow Ones by JY Yang "The grass is dying." Kira looked up from squeezing a sachet of turkey-flavored sludge into the cat's bowl. Thom was standing by the living room window in his bathrobe still, holding a chipped mug of coffee and gazing out. "What?" she asked. "The grass. In the garden. It's gone all brown." She dumped the sachet in the trash and almost rinsed her sticky fingers under the kitchen faucet. But she remembered in time, and instead wiped them on the dishtowel she'd hung up. She hurried into the living room. "There," Thom said, "see?" In the small rectangle of dirt they called a garden the sparse tufts of grass had shriveled and turned colorless like the hair on an old man's head. A flap of crisp packet gleamed in the far corner, silver-underside-up, chicken bones scattered around it. The neighborhood kids. Kira wondered how long they had been there. Maybe forever. Everything seemed stuck in stasis these days. The grass had been in decline for a long time, months before the invasion began. Once upon a time Kira had plans for that patch. She had imagined cultivating flowers: Tulips, daffodils, rosebushes. Climbing ivies for the trellis. Maybe even one of those outdoor water features. But there hadn't been any time, had there? "Hasn't rained in weeks," Thom said. "Might never rain again." Kira exhaled and stormed back to the kitchen. The clock said five to three and she wished it didn't. She took a box of porkloin out of the freezer and popped it into the fridge. "Might as well dig it all up," Thom said from the living room. "Yeah, why don't you do it?" she said, louder than she'd intended. The cat had cleaned out her bowl and now stood staring at Kira, tail stiff in expectation. Kira snatched the water dish off the floor, then gingerly ran a centimeter of water into it. "Don't waste it," she told the cat as she sat it down again. In the living room Thom had settled into the armchair, knees apart, eyes blank. "What would be the point?" "What?" He turned to look at her, framed in the doorway between the kitchen and the living room, and shrugged. "There's no point." "Whatever," she said, and went to put her boots on. The cat had followed her out of the kitchen. "Come here, girl," she heard Thom say, his voice soft and charming, like it always used to be. Kira shoved her feet into the narrow confines of her boots. "I've left pork chops in the fridge to defrost," she said. "If you have time, you could make dinner." She knew he wouldn't. The cat settled on the windowsill to watch her as she stepped outside and locked the front door. Kira pulled her coat around herself, and then, because she had to, like pulling a plaster off, to get it over with; because she couldn't just ignore it, she looked up at the sky. From horizon to horizon, the sky above their street was filled with aliens. A thick layer of massive silver bodies, like cumulus rolls made of mercury, slid by over the tops of the streetlamps, the roofs, the twisted fingers of bare trees. Sunlight sometimes leaked through their bulk, but not often; the world had been in a state of weak thunderstorm dusk for weeks. The president of the United States had called them the Slow Ones, and the name stuck. Their enormous smooth bodies slipped against one another in a never-ending parade. There were scales and faint markings on each one whose purpose was impossible to discern. Concentric discs in alternating light and dark colors, larger across than a commercial jetliner, were assumed by observers to be eyes. But the gaping maw in front of each one, leading into unfathomable darkness: That one everyone could agree on. It was a mouth. A permanently open mouth. They were sucking up all the water vapor in the atmosphere. That was what the scientists on the proper news channels—BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera—were all saying. But even the so-called experts knew so little about what was going on that people were no worse off reading crackpot theories on the Internet. Those had sprung up like mushrooms in the wake of rain, or perhaps, in the absence of it. They offered up all kinds of explanations as to what was happening: Act of God, benign migration, hostile invasion, collective hallucination. The first few days after the Slow Ones arrived, pouring into the sky above Alaska like reflective pancake batter until they blanketed the Earth, Thom had spent hours scrolling through theory after theory after theory, the most promising of which he served up to Kira over dinner, or texted to her while he was at work. That was when he still had work. The Slow Ones were aliens. This was something almost everyone—the scientist, the conspiracy theorist, the person on the street—agreed on. They were not of this world. The prevailing theory was that these were migratory creatures and they would leave for unknown pastures in good time. And then sunlight and blue skies and rain would return to the world. Wind and weather and water evaporation, all those good things. It was unlikely a theory as anything, but it allowed people to hold on to hope. Kira put her hood up and hurried down the street. If she walked fast enough, she might catch the three-fifteen bus to the city center. She missed the bus. When Kira finally arrived at the city center, the air under the Slow Ones was still. Not a wing stirred in it, not a guttural call rang out. Gulls were a year-round phenomenon in Norwich, sailing from spire to spire and filling public spaces with their noises regardless of the season. But their numbers in the market square had been dwindling since the Slow Ones arrived, and today was the day, it seemed, they passed the point of no return. Kira noted this with an odd trill in her belly. She, like everyone else, had grown numb to the clipped tones of a Dr. Somebody explaining to a presenter, in clinical terms, how the disruption to the Earth's water cycle was killing all the fish in the ocean. But it was another thing entirely to watch all the seabirds vanish before her eyes, relegated to an unknown fate. She hurried through the semi-sparse mid-afternoon crowd. When Thom's agency had moved him here a few years ago, she had been struck by how many retirees she saw on the streets. It felt like a different kind of fabric had been sewn in place compared to London which she had just gotten used to, and Kuala Lumpur where she had grown up. It was a good move for them, Thom being promoted to Norfolk branch manager, but Kira had wondered about all the people here, aging in place. It put in her mind an image of people sinking to the bottom of a lake, like sediment. Of course, at that time tourism was still a booming industry, and Thom had glowing images in his sights, futures full of holiday cottages and ski trips to the Alps. Neither of them knew what lay on the horizon: the shrinkings and the layoffs and the final collapse that awaited them. The arrival of the Slow Ones had only been a final straw. As she walked past the market square Charles, who ran one of the fruit stalls, waved at her. "All right?" he asked. An impulse seized her then, a screaming impulse, one which wanted to ask him how could he be so calm, couldn't he see what was happening? She wanted to grab him and shake him, point him to the sky and the shuttered fish stall next to him and the sad twisted things that were left of his wares, she wanted to do that and ask, Can't you see? Can't you see? She wanted to run at all the white-haired folk shuffling down the street getting on with their business as usual and shout it at them, shout it into their hairy wrinkled ears. She smiled at Charles. "Yeah, I'm alright." By the time she had gone down all the little streets that led her to the Pushcart she was half an hour late for work. As she came through the eatery's glass-paneled wooden door she caught a glimpse of Melanie's splendid silhouette at the till and her heart did that weird flutter it always did when Melanie was around. She shoved that sensation deep inside herself, where it belonged, and put on her shop-girl smile. In the afternoons the Pushcart sold tea and scones and crepes with bacon and maple syrup. Come evenings and the menu switched to alcohol and deep-fried things served in small silver buckets. Today the sign said no tea, they were under rations, bottled drinks only please. The warm brown interior of the cafe held a handful of lethargic patrons in various states of apathy, chewing fitfully or reading the news. Some of them were watching the TV nailed to the far wall, framed by old ship ropes and seashells. They usually kept it off unless there was footy going on, but since the Slow Ones came it had been permanently fixed to BBC News. The prevailing graphic, set to an indistinct voiceover, said WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR. (Nothing. They knew nothing. When governments and scientists sent drones and instruments up to the Slow Ones they stopped working, some kind of electromagnetic interference, they said. NASA was stumped. Everybody was stumped, grasping at straws.) Melanie didn't turn around as Kira stashed her things under the counter. That was an anomaly: For the past six months Kira's work routine had always begun with her warm and buttery smile. She studied her coworker's broad back, hunched over the till, noting the crooked way the apron was fastened around her waist. "You alright?" Melanie straightened up with a speed that suggested she hadn't heard Kira come in. "Hey. How's it going?" She looked tired, a collection of messy lines and dark smudges, as though the weekend had worn her face thin somehow. "You alright?" she repeated. "Yeah, I suppose. The sky hasn't fallen in, has it?" She gave Kira a laugh, and it was the kind that spoke less of mirth than it did of defeat. "How's life at home?" Kira's fingers fumbled with her apron strings. Melanie noticed her struggling and said, "Let me get that." With her back turned Kira said, "Life goes on. Thom's still moping." A firm tug at her waist. "He'll recover. Have faith." "I'm an atheist for a reason." She turned around. "How's Angie?" "Ha. Funny you should ask." Melanie sucked in a breath. "She's gone back to Sheffield." "What, you mean—" "Yeah. Permanently. She spent the weekend packing." Melanie was staring at her knuckles, which she kept lightly punching against the counter. "I'm sorry. What happened?" "Can't quite say, really. Just th— I don't know. She'd been planning it for a while, I think. She got back with her ex without telling me." She looked at Kira suddenly, eyes bright and shining. "Might as well, eh? End of the world and all that." "I'm sorry." She reached out and touched Melanie's forearm for a brief, hot moment. "I'm surprised, honestly." "Are you." "I mean, I—" She wanted to say, I always thought you two had the perfect relationship. "You two seemed so happy." "We did, didn't we?" She laughed again, and one corner of her mouth quirked upwards. In the slant of those lips Kira suddenly saw the cracking of facade and glimpsed familiar shores: the simmering irritations, the long silent nights, the cold stretches of not-arguments that thawed slowly into not-forgiveness. "Come help me with this till," Melanie said. "Something's wrong." They fought with the till. It was an old-fashioned one, just buttons and a drawer that popped out. It was jammed. They figured out the problem—a coin had gotten stuck, down the side of the drawer, and they fished it out with a flat screwdriver. "There you are, you little bastard," Melanie said, shaking the coin like a misbehaving puppy. She put it on top of the till, a tiny victory. At six a man barged into the Pushcart and slammed into the counter as Kira was ringing up an old lady's tea. "Turn your TV on," he rasped. "It's on," Kira said, pointing. The President of the United States, looking like he had aged ten years in as many days, was speaking inaudibly. In one corner a red block declared “LIVE.” The man was youngish, clean-shaven, dressed in clothes that were well looked-after. "Turn it up. Turn it up." Kira looked around, but she had no idea where Melanie was. The woman by the TV stepped up and reached for the volume dial. The voice of the US president, clipped and nasal, rose up and filled the room. "... THAT I AUTHORIZE THE USE OF THERMONUCLEAR WEAPONS AGAINST THE PHENOMENON KNOWN AS THE SLOW ONES..." "He's going to nuke them," the man who'd burst in said. "It's mental." Titters of conversation filled the room. What could that mean? Kira felt like the ground under her was vanishing, but she couldn't tell if it was her or the planet that was evaporating. The US president said: The missiles would be released over the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, far from any centers of civilization. The US president said: America could no longer wait for world powers to deliberate on a unified course of action. The US president said: America must take steps necessary to safeguard our future. A young man near the front of house was telling his girlfriend, in loud tones, how the radiation was going to get seeded in the atmosphere and kill them all. He was a physicist, he knew. The hawks running America, drunk on their Hollywood apocalypse dreams, were going to destroy life on the planet as we knew it. "It's war, you know," the old lady at the till said to Kira. "The Russians aren't going to like it. They're going to do something, you'll see." She declared it matter-of-factly, with utter conviction, and Kira saw the young girl she had been, bent over the radio, listening for news from the frontlines. On impulse she said, "It's on the house," and closed the till. "Go on, everything's free today." The man who had run in said, "Could I get—" "No, no, we're closing." Kira walked out from behind the counter, her legs shaky but still functional, and went to the glass-paneled door. The US president was still talking. She refused to look at the sky as she flipped the “OPEN” sign over. "I'm sorry. Please, everyone, could you just leave. We're closed. Everything's on the house." The scattered handfuls looked at her and each other, uncertain. "Go home," Kira said. "Call your mother, hug your children. Go home." She watched them file out onto the dark streets. When it was just her in the Pushcart she abandoned the unwashed, undressed tables and turned the lights out. Craig, the owner, only came in on Thursdays and weekends. She'd sort it out later. She found Melanie behind the storeroom door, chest still slowly heaving in the wake of a long fit of crying. She stood up, looking embarrassed, as Kira came in. "Sorry. I—still a bit of a mess—did something happen?" Kira ghosted towards her, fixed on her red-rimmed eyes, her lips. "The world's going to end." "What?" "The Americans are going to nuke the Slow Ones. They're doing it tomorrow." Melanie exhaled. "Madness." Madness, chaos, centers not holding. Just what was she clinging on to, anyway? Kira reached up and kissed her. Melanie's body reacted with surprise at first, then hunger. She had strong arms that could lift a double carton of coffee beans over her head, and they trembled around Kira's waist. As Kira sublimed into liquid Melanie closed the door behind them, so that nobody would hear. Later, as they sat together on the floor, sticky skin to sticky skin, Melanie asked, "Why?" No modifiers, no clauses. Just ”why.” Kira remained quiet for a while, pinching her toes inside the lingering damp heat of her boots. "Thom once told me about a theory he read. You know how they said the Slow Ones might be like migratory birds?" "I've heard that one. Sounds like tosh. But pretty much everything does these days." "Well, migratory birds come back every year. So why haven't we seen the Slow Ones before? Why has no-one, out of all of human history, ever mentioned them?" "So they're not migratory." Kira could still picture Thom's face as he had grilled her over this theory at the dinner table. How his freckled face had lit up with schoolboy excitement at the prospect of humanity's destruction, something interesting happening at last. "Well, the universe operates on a different scale, doesn't it? Billions and billions. What if the Slow Ones do come back, but so long that they only appear once every geologic age?" Melanie made a grunting noise. Kira settled her soft hip against Melanie's bony one. "It's the extinction events," she said. "What are those?" "Big die-offs." She curled her fingers around one of Melanie's nipples. "Like the dinosaurs. The Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction. That's the one everyone knows, but it wasn't the only one. The fossil record is full of mass extinctions. Late Devonian, Permian-Triassic, Triassic-Jurassic... Once every thirty million years, like clockwork. Scientists don't know why." Melanie turned her head, her attention caught. "The Slow Ones?" "The oceans are already all dead. That's how it usually starts." "So we're going extinct." "Probably. I don't know. It's just a theory, anyway." Melanie blew air through wet lips. "It's not like we can get off this planet, is it?" Kira laid her head against Melanie's shoulder and listened to the sound of her breathing for a while. "You know," she said, "some scientists think extinction events are like planetary do-overs. Evolution speeds up after each extinction event. New forms of life start to flourish." "Like when you get left for a younger woman." Kira snorted. Melanie caught the edge of her hand and caressed the tip of her little finger, gently feeling around the shape of knuckle. How small our bones are, Kira thought, how fragile. What if whoever comes after us never finds them? It would be as if we never existed. A blank in the fossil record. "Are you going to tell Thom?" Melanie asked. Kira thought of what Thom's reaction might be. The things he would say, and the things he wouldn't. The look on his face, both accusatory and triumphant. She felt tired. "No," she said finally. "He's got enough on his mind." She could see him now, in his bathrobe still, standing at the window, watching grass die in their garden as the sky grew darker and darker. In the fridge, untouched, a pair of pork chops slowly defrosted, waiting and waiting and waiting. END “Curiosity Fruit Machine” is copyright S. Qiouyi Lu, 2017. Join me for a moody stroll thru 1930 Berlin on the trail of a child murderer in Fritz Lang's fascinating (but not necessarily masterful) first talkie. Peter Lorre is the main attraction, supported by a cast of colorful characters. I examine the three basic ways to view the film (character piece, procedural, and parable on the dangers of vigilanteism). I examine where Lang may be fudging or unsure of what he wants to say. I suggest little improvements like "I would have done this all differently" and "I would have cut out this whole section of the film". And I praise Lorre's performance and the directing in general. I fail to note that the only music is whistling, and it's done only by the killer (famously), the lead detective, and the lead criminal. Why? No idea. Also, I fail to note that the film was shot in 1.2:1, which is kind of weirdly skinny.
Why No 10 can't handle the noisy generals?
