Our favorite stories: Mass media shaped by sight-sound imagery, inspired by watching a ton of TV and critiquing the commercials as much as watching the programming. Recalling jingles, surgery cartoons, GEICO ads...On trying research journalism - "something just wasn't clicking, it felt like it drained me of energy." Part time restaurant job and appliance & repair parts marketing... the perfect recipe for becoming the future Head of Strategy at Sid Lee? JK - it helped with learning how to relate with people. (KEY SKILL) Big moments from doing the work: Originally applied to VCU for copywriting, but was identified as a strategist. Found mentorship in Earl Cox, late CSO of The Martin AgencyOn trust and taste: critical ingredients for a successful collaboration between strategy and creative. "you have to figure out the references that connect with them... but do not be the Judge Judy in the room" On working with younger creatives: "get them into the habit of explaining their rationale... it makes for more fruitful working relationships." Bringing together a high-velocity team: hiring for the right skills, but also leaving room for individuals to surpass their own expectations for themselves. "I like seeing people's faces" - Earl Cox was great at taking a room and working it... reading it and regurgitating it... Career advice we'll live with: On imposter syndrome: "Find people who are going to be your advocates... if you have someone accomplished that thinks you can do XYZ, maybe you can!" Jargon Monoxide creates a fall sense of competence... folks from non-traditional marketing backgrounds have these razor-sharp minds but don't have that marketing-ese... Cardi B is a brilliant marketer but she does NOT sound like the people I'm in meetings with "I love a From > To" - the more honest you are with that, the more provocative... that is always a money maker... when you can capture the mood of the clients, in addition to their ambition... reshape it in a way that gets people excited to hear what you have to say.On setting a vision for success: "all strategy is to get people to take the time to align on where we're going""An informed opinion delivered with conviction delivers hope." On helping people find their own 'lightbulb moment'. "Rigidity is the pitfall of strategy... overconfidence, over complication, too 'inside baseball'... those are all off-ramps." "If I don't understand this, there's no way the consumer will understand it."Find us us on Twitter, Instagram, and at The Bad Podcast dot com
This week, we sit down with Kwame Taylor-Hayford, the new president of D&AD and co-founder of Kin in New York, to explore his mission of empowering the next generation of creative talent. Kwame brings his extensive experience from both the agency and brand sides, having worked with industry heavyweights like Sid Lee, Saatchi & Saatchi, Anomaly, and Chobani. Our conversation delves into the challenges underrepresented groups face in the industry, the need to uplift mid-career professionals, and the power of creativity in driving meaningful change. Kwame shares insights from his own journey, reflecting on an upbringing that spanned Ghana, Egypt, South Africa, the UK, and New York, which instilled in him a deep sense of empathy and a considered approach to leadership. We discuss the importance of creating work cultures that prioritise people's well-being, embracing diversity, and the role of travel in broadening perspectives. In our chat, we touch on the shifting dynamics of the creative industry, where employee power is on the rise, and examine the implications of AI on creativity. Despite the increasing digitalisation of our world, Kwame emphasises why human connection remains essential. He also opens up about his journey, revealing thoughts on life balance, career aspirations, and his 20-year vision for the future. Ultimately, this episode offers a glimpse into the mind of a creative leader who is shaping the future of D&AD and striving to make the industry more inclusive, resilient, and purpose-driven. After this fascinating conversation, it feels like a much brighter future is on the horizon.
Venture studio Squared Circles has lofty plans to launch the next big health, wellness and food products. The project first began a little over three years ago when Lukas Derksen, who hailed from the creative firm Sid Lee, began angel investing in brands alongside entrepreneurs Alexander Gilkes and Osman Khan. One of its early investments was in the hair wellness brand Nutrafol. They decided to formalize the program into an incubation studio. Over the years, however, Squared Circles decided to take a more hands-on approach -- instead of acting as an incubator and investor for external brands, the studio is now focused on launching and scaling its own businesses. With that, the company just raised a $40 million Series A led by L Catterton. "The pitch to the partners that we're building with in the future is: OK, how do we actually build these things all the way to launch -- and even Series A -- without actually giving up necessarily any more of the cap table people?" said co-founder Derksen. He joined the Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about Squared Circle's growth so far. Currently, Squared Circles has incubated two brands -- cooking oil startup Algae Cooking and skin care company Magic Molecule. It has plans to launch other brands too in spaces like "nutritious food products tailored to the GLP-1 generation" and "delivering functional medicine to children in tasty alternatives," according to its website. According to Derksen, all of these ideas come from data. "We start very much from a consumer insight place -- and that's something that we strive for every single time," he said. The focus now is to continue launching new products and getting them ready to market as quickly as possible. Though VC funding isn't as plentiful as it was a few years ago, Derksen said there is still an appetite for certain areas. "The two categories that have been outspending on disproportionately are health and wellness and food and beverage," he said.

The Inspiring Futures podcast has been on hiatus for the past few months. In that period, a few recordings made last year never made it out into the public airwaves, which is an absolute disgrace. One such recording was an interview I did with Sophie Ozouz, the co-founder of Kin. Kin is a purpose-focused agency with offices in NY and Los Angeles. Sophie founded the agency with a former colleague Kwame Taylor Hayford. In the interview, I discuss Sophie's background as a strategist, her experiences working at Sid Lee, their motivations for starting her own shop, their work at Kin, and some general discussion on brands and purpose. Kin was named Ad Age's Purpose Agency of the Year in 2022

It's the summer of 2021—one year since the murder of George Floyd. And if you're wondering what that has to do with the season-four wrap-up of a podcast about branding, let me tell you: in early 2020 I had a plan for season four of How Brands Are Built. But in the wake of George Floyd's murder and protests around the world, my plan changed a bit. 2020 was already a pretty awful year for most people, and it just seemed to be getting worse and worse. So I started thinking about whether there was a way I could use this little platform of mine to do some good—or at least talk about something positive. That led me to reach out to my most diverse set of guests yet, starting with Dr. Jason Chambers, who talked about the origins of racist brand names and what to do about them. I talked to female agency founders like Dava Guthmiller of Noise 13, Sunny Bonnell of Motto, and Emily Heyward of Red Antler about how they got started and the role of diversity in their agency cultures. The season ended with a two-part episode featuring Brian Collins and his agency's design apprentice, Diego Segura, who told me about one way to create opportunities for talented, but less privileged, designers and strategists. And along the way, I talked to Armin Vit of Brand New, Alina Wheeler, author of Designing Brand Identity, and Nirm Shanbhag of Sid Lee. While I talked to guests about their agencies, books they'd written, or other topics specific to their areas of expertise, I also asked nearly all of them about what brands and branding professionals could be doing to improve the state of the world—in light of COVID-19, in light of racial injustice, and just in general. Are brands a force for good? Can they be? Should they try to be? At the end of this episode, which features clips from every interview this season, I boil everything I heard and learned down into five ways brands—and branding professionals like you and me—can make the world a better place (sorry): Be selective (and stick to your values) Walk the talk Wield your influence Proactively pursue diversity Don't underestimate the power of your work In the episode, I break down each of these ideas in detail.

Pre-pandemic, the workplace was in evolution, but after the last year, its entire form and very function have to be rethought and brought into the future. In this new podcast from real estate investment firm Ivanhoé Cambridge, a global roster of experts—architects, CEOs, organizational behavioralists, data scientists and more—wrangle over the future of the workplace. What do we want from an office? Lead by workspace design expert Annie Bergeron, they'll talk about tech and productivity, collaboration and community, and why it's so important you feel good at work. This series is produced by Sid Lee.
In this episode we sat down with Philippe Meunier who is Chief Creative Officer and Co-founder of Sid Lee, one of the world’s premier creative agencies with offices in Montreal, Toronto, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle. With over 28 years of experience in the industry, Philippe has overseen all the creative output for a host of major international clients including Absolut, Adidas, Starbucks, Red Bull, and many more. As an active member of the creative community, Philippe has been invited to chair and serve on the jury panel at various national and international competitions, such as the Cannes Lions International Festival, the D&AD Awards, the Canadian Marketing Awards and Communication Arts. Collaboration is an essential part of Philippe’s approach to creativity and is especially evident in the culture and ideology of Sid Lee. The agency’s core values are based on collectivism and the belief that the group is far stronger than the individual, so every idea and opinion is given equal value. The result is an agency where everyone works (and plays!) hard as a team, sharing both the workload and the rewards. Famous for his Zen-like approach to the craziness of running a large creative group (consequences of his love for surfing and yoga), Philippe firmly believes that great work comes from happy people, and he lives by this motto 24/7. Nirm Shanbhag is the Chief Strategy Officer of Sid Lee USA, an international creative company. He’s also my old boss. Back in 2012, he was running the San Francisco office of Interbrand, and he hired me as Director of Verbal Identity. Before Interbrand, Nirm earned his MBA from London Business School and worked in advertising, at firms like Mullen and McCann. He also ran his own, independent agency, Notch Strategy, for about six years between his roles at Interbrand and Sid Lee. Nirm and I have worked together quite a bit—first at Interbrand, then as independent consultants. We’ve been called in on brand architecture projects a few times, and Nirm is one of just a handful of people I consider an expert on the topic. Since I haven’t had too many (any) episodes focused on brand architecture, I was eager to get Nirm to share some of his insights into brand architecture—what it is, why it matters, and how it should be done. Throughout the conversation, Nirm came back time and again to the idea of keeping the consumer’s journey front and center, considering their motivations and approaches to decision-making. We also talked about brand purpose, and whether brands are good or bad for society (heady stuff). At the end of the conversation, Nirm recommended two very different books: The Experience Economy (“a seminal work and … one that not a lot of people know about”) and A Brief History of Time, by Stephen Hawking. I’ve probably read [A Brief History of Time] four times in my life. The reason I think it’s worthwhile is because, yeah, it’s about physics, but at its heart it’s a book about perspective and recognizing that your perspective can change.” – Nirm Shanbhag To learn more about Nirm and Sid Lee, visit sidlee.com. I also recommend you check out some of Nirm’s blog posts on the Notch blog.
Dustin Rideout was the Head of Brand & Fan Experience for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC at Maple Leaf Sport & Entertainment. He was also a partner and head of strategy at Sid Lee in Toronto, Canada. We talk about him making the move into pro sports from advertising, what he was looking for when hiring and where he sees the biggest opportunities for change in the industry. It was a great conversation filled with actionable tips for potential newcomers from someone who has rebuilt a marketing team in a sports front office. The two books the Dustin mentioned were "The Art Of The Start" by Guy Kawasaki and "First 90 Days" by Michael Watkins.
Naz Arandi [Creative Director at AirBnB] & Elana Gorbatyuck [ Chief Strategy Officer/ Partner at Sid Lee] are the kinds of leaders that everyone dreams of working for. They sat down with us to talk about the work, but also how they work to make their teams inclusive. This conversation is inclusive of all the feels.
Born in Massachusetts, raised shortly in Toronto and Ottawa, and then grew up in Hong Kong, this neuroscience graduate has been stretching her interests and experiences far and wide over plenty of cities and multiple industries. After working as an event producer/promoter in Shanghai, Nancy came back to Toronto and co-founded Mansion- a music promotion and event planning group that produced Toronto’s most unique and desirable events. After exiting the music scene, Nancy didn’t stop dreaming. In three years, she has created three restaurants- from German street eats to authentic Chinese. Now, when Nancy is not busy making sure all the food is up to her standard at SO SO food club, she probably is strategizing award-winning campaigns at Sid Lee. When she is not solving problems at work, she might be conceptualizing her next big idea.Indeed, she is a busy woman- with smart ideas and big ambitions, but she never makes her move blindly. Utilizing her science background with an extremely creative mind, Nancy can’t get enough of bringing unique concepts to life and creating experiences that are hard to ignore and forget. Before sitting on the couch with Nancy in her beautiful Loft, I paid a visit to SO SO just to make sure the food is truly authentic. And yes, I was impressed. For the first time, I was proud of my own cuisine- the kind of food I grew up with, crave for every weekend, and cannot leave without. Being a rebel with a strategic plan, artistic heart, and cause in mind, Nancy is set out to bring real Chinese food made from scratch and of the best ingredients to Toronto. On this week’s show, I had the immense pleasure of talking with a long time colleague, François Arbour @ Arbour Investments. François is a true entrepreneur. He founded his first company at the age of 19, before going to work in marketing for Bell, as well as several major agencies, including Cossette and Sid Lee, on major accounts such as Adidas, Cirque du Soleil, GM, Molson, SAQ And Sony. He then founded Premiumbeat in 2005. PremiumBeat is a production music library for television, movies and other media. In a few years, PremiumBeat has become the world leader in its market and counts among its customers: Facebook, Apple, Google, Tesla, GE, Microsoft, BMW and even Barack Obama. In 2015, François sold Premiumbeat to Shutterstock and served as vice president products until 2017. Today, François is an active investor and mentor in the startup community. We spoke about a wide range of topics: How and why he’s invested in 17 startups so far and what he’s planning next Why he doesn’t like SAAS investments The joys of angel investing (as well as some of the heachaches) The myths around customer acquisition (as well as its importance). Interesting conversation around the difficulty of customer acquisition today. When he realized that PremiumBeat had become more than a hobby The supply and demand model of PremiumBeat. How bootstrapping was instrumental to building a sustainable business How he chooses his investments and entrepreneurs The death of Flash! Francois was generous with his time and wonderful insights.
