The paper that we discuss in this episode describes how an invasive species of ants disrupts lion hunting behaviour. There are also acacia trees, elephants, zebras and buffalos involved in the whole chain of interactions between species. To talk about this incredibly interesting research I invited an Associate Professor, Adam Ford, Canada Research Chair in Wildlife Restoration Ecology at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna, Canada who has a lab of graduate and undergraduate students who work on large mammal ecology. As for the paper that we will discuss today, it was led by Douglas N. Kamaru, a PhD student at the University of Wyoming, in the Goheen lab (Professor Jake Goheen). The other leads are Todd M. Palmer, University of Florida and Corinna Riginos, University of Wyoming. To see the full list of contributors (a total of 20 scientists) I refer you to the paper, which is linked below. As always, you will get more links and articles to dive even deeper into topics we discuss on the podcast in my newsletter. Shark declines: finning regulations might have bitten off more than they can chew In recent years governments around the world have attempted to slow the catastrophic decline in shark numbers with regulations, including on the practice of shark finning. But a new study led by marine biologist Boris Worm and published in the journal Science suggests that these regulations have backfired and shark mortality is still rising. The reason is that shark fishers responded by keeping all of the shark, and developing ever more markets for shark meat and oils, such as in supplements, cosmetics, and even hidden as “whitefish” or “flake” in fish and chip markets. Dogs like TV about dogs but don't give a rat's about squirrels Like a lot of us, dogs spend a certain amount of time in front of the TV. But what are they watching and what do they like? Freya Mowat, a veterinary ophthalmologist from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was interested in finding what dogs like to watch on TV so that she could develop new ways to test dog vision. Her study, recently published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science, revealed that, unsurprisingly, dogs preferred to watch other dogs, and ten per cent also enjoyed watching cartoons as much as live action animals. The more unexpected finding was that the dogs were not as interested in watching humans, squirrels, or trucks. An ancient tree's crowning glory Paleontologists working in Norton, New Brunswick have made an extraordinary discovery: a fully intact 350 million year old fossilized tree unlike any previously known to science. Matt Stinson, the assistant curator of geology and paleontology at the New Brunswick Museum, says it's extremely rare in the fossil record to find a fully intact tree like this one that has its trunk, branches and leaves still attached. Olivia King, a research associate at the museum, described it as “odd and whimsical,” like the trees from Dr. Seuss's famous book The Lorax. Their study is in the journal Current Biology. There was an old elephant who swallowed an ant… The complex interdependence of plants and animals in an ecosystem are often hard to fathom until they go wrong. This is illustrated by a new study in Kenya showing how an invasive ant led to elephants knocking down trees, affecting how lions hunt zebras, which turned out to be bad news for buffalo. Adam Ford from the University of British Columbia, Okanagan is part of the team on this study published in Science. Understanding when (earlier), and how (cleverly), stone-age people lived in Europe New technology to study fragments of bone found in a cave in Germany is leading to a rewriting of the history of how Homo sapiens established themselves in Europe, when the continent was dominated by Neanderthals. A team, led by Jean-Jacques Hublin, at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, uncovered human bones dating back 46,000 years in a cave in Northern Germany, which means the Homo sapiens were living side by side much earlier with Neanderthals in a frigid ice-age climate instead of sticking to the tropics like previously believed. The research, including detailed climatic reconstructions, led to three papers published in the journal Nature. A separate find is giving new insight into their material culture as archaeologists have uncovered a subtly clever tool they think ancient humans would have used to spin rope. The team built replicas of the tool and found it worked remarkably effectively to twist plant fibres into strong rope. Nicholas Conard, an archaeologist from the University of Tübingen in Germany, was part of the team, and the work was published in Science Advances.

Interviews with Melbourne archaeologists Adam Ford and Geoff Hewitt.  The Silent Prison, Episode 1 of the podcast Look History in the Eye is about the convergence of ideology and design. Pentridge Prison, in Melbourne and its on-site panopticons were the physical manifestation of criminal reform ideas in the 1800s. Radical concepts of that time were designed into the architectural vision for the prison and introduced a method we now know as one of mankind's most brutal forms of punishment. Presented by Kate Follington and Public Record Office Victoria This podcast is produced by Public Record Office Victoria the archive of the state government of Victoria. We sit down with Dr. Ford and talk conservation.  He is an Associate Professor of Biology at UBC Okanagan in the Faculty of Science. Dr. Ford leads the Wildlife Restoration Ecology Lab (WiRE Lab) for UBC-O.  Across the Earth, human modification of the environment has never been so widespread as it is today. As a result, many populations of Canada's most recognizable wildlife - caribou, elk, deer, wolves, bears – are declining. Many of these declines are occurring because people have altered the types of interactions that occur between species: the links in the food chain are broken. To counter these impacts, restoration ecology has emerged as one of the most important disciplines in the life sciences. Restoration also forms the backbone of environmental legislation in Canada. If restoration is to succeed, scientists must develop and translate new knowledge of how people affect the outcome of species interactions. The Wildlife Restoration Ecology Lab (WiRE Lab) is addressing the impact of human activity on the interactions among large predators (wolves, bears, cougars), their prey (deer, elk), and plants, in human-modified landscapes. We use a combination of field experiments, GPS tracking, computer models, and satellite imagery to bring together the ecology of individuals, populations, and communities. Specifically, we are investigating how forestry practices, urban growth, human-wildlife conflict, and highways not only change species abundance, but the manner in which these species move through the landscape and interact with one another. The WiRE Lab also works at the nexus of research and policy to help inject science into the decision making process. You will enjoy this candid discussion with Dr. Ford and learn more about the important role academia is playing in modern wildlife management.  He also sits on the Province of BC's Minister's Wildlife Advisory Committee and the Provincial Hunting and Trapping Advisory Team.

About the Babylon Bee: The Babylon Bee is the world's best satire site, totally inerrant in all its truth claims. We write satire about Christian stuff, political stuff, and everyday life. The Babylon Bee was created ex nihilo on the eighth day of the creation week, exactly 6,000 years ago. We have been the premier news source through every major world event, from the Tower of Babel and the Exodus to the Reformation and the War of 1812. We focus on just the facts, leaving spin and bias to other news sites like CNN and Fox News. If you would like to complain about something on our site, take it up with God. Having been at the helm of the Babylon Bee for awhile now, what has been the most mind-blowing thing that's been sent to you? Like, has anybody gifted you an autographed Joe Montana football or maybe someone sent you a bag-full of their old fingernail clippings? 2. My fav Babylon Bee post goes all the way back to 2016 and is “Pentecostal Teen Finally Receives Gift Of Faking Tongues”. What post is in the Hall of Fame for you? 3. I have used Babylon Bee posts for real-life profitable dialogue, but its crazy because your guys' posts are satire… What is it about satire that really is innocent as a dove but wise as a serpent - and often becomes a helpful medium for discussion? 4. How do you view your own labors in running the Babylon Bee in the grand scheme of things? As you engage in the divine use of ridicule? 5. Its insane because The Babylon Bee is swimming in the seas of pushback – be it CNN pr the recent jab from a New York Times article… Can you give us an overview of the climate where its not all whoopee-cushions and arm-pit-farts? 6. If you loose how do we all loose? 7. I was pleased when one day on my feed something called Not the Bee showed up. Not the Bee is your humor-based entertainment site that covers news so absurd it should be satire, but somehow isn't… Man, this one is funny, but actually really bums me out too, how does it not just bum you into despair? 8. Not the Bee has some legit merch – have you ever seen in public someone rocking the Karl Marx with a clown nose shirt? And if you haven't, when you do, would you buy that guy a beer and giving him a high five, or just say a lil prayer and keep walking? Brand New Episode out now  GHOST ARCADIA Glory  Single review ANTHEMIC ROCK CREW DELIVER IMPRESSIVE SINGLE & VIDEO Modern rock quartet GHOST ARCADIA continue their upward trajectory with the release of their current single, Glory - https://youtu.be/KInlxO4Xoxg Born from a duo, Ghost Arcadia originally consisted of Reuben Beau Davies (vocals) and Anthony Hollis (rhythm guitar/ synth) who added Adam Ford (lead guitar) and Ali McCreadie (drums) to the ranks, crafting a highly accomplished rock crew that is primed for national recognition. The Londoners express a diverse range of influences, both collectively and individually. This openness to differing genres and alternate sounds, has enabled the band to develop their own unique stamp, whilst still pulling in other influences such as Bring Me The Horizon, Linkin Park, and The Killers. Shades of Biffy Clyro and Enter Shikari can be heard on the band's explosive and current single, Glory. Lead vocalist, Reu comments about the track: “Glory is about that person who's aura you can't help but get swept up in, even if it's just a few seconds of time. Someone who makes time fly for you, whether that be a lover, friend, or relative. I wanted it to be able to transcend people's expectations of what a love song could be. It needed to be ‘anthemic' but still rooted in a catchy melodic rock groove. Something you could blast out of your car stereo or dance senselessly around your room to.”  As live music has taken a temporary backseat, GHOST ARCADIA have turned their attention to recording further singles and new videos. Look out for the band during the coming months, as new singles will follow, along with a full touring schedule for 2021. https://www.facebook.com/GhostArcadia/ Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2QRLmf2 | Youtube: https://bit.ly/2Z4DF9R https://www.instagram.com/ghostarcadiaband   https://www.twitter.com/ghostarcadia     Overall I really enjoyed Glory as its perfect for those who may not been into the heavy side or rock music, it's a perfect rack to add to your playlist if you want a good solid rock anthemic track that is not overpowering.   You can find this episode and previous episode in the below links Spotfiy https://open.spotify.com/show/6Jj9SsrXxve44839dptihN… Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/setting-the-tone/id1499390718 Google https://podcasts.google.com/?q=setting%20the%20tone podbean https://Settingthetone2.podbean.com

In this episode Mark and Curtis break the barrier of pandemic isolation and are joined virtually by Dr. Adam Ford (not the dentist in Arizona) to talk about the best ways to protect your expensive fly rod, what happens when an elephant doesn't like you and the emerging idea of misplaced conservation. Misplaced conservation is a multifaceted phenomenon going on right now involving misinformation and polarization and it is affecting the ability of conservation to focus on priorities. Adam explains the unintended and intended consequences of misplaced conservation including conservation that causes direct harm to wildlife populations, misallocation of conservation dollars, throwing conservation partners under the bus, and merchants of doubt messing with your minds. The gang also talks about why using honeybees as the poster child for saving native pollinators is like using a cow to save endangered caribou, raising money to outlaw something that is already prohibited and British Columbia's controversial grizzly hunt.  Wrapping it up the guys talk about the role of academic research in wildlife management and offer a few parting thoughts on what people can do to mitigate the impacts of misplaced conservation.       Show Notes Follow Dr. Ford on Twitter at @adamTford Check out Adam's WiRE Lab website - Wildlife Restoration Ecology Lab at http://atford.weebly.com/ and look for the land rover with the door crushed in by an elephant.

Welcome to Hunting & Fishing BC, my podcast about fishing, hunting and other wild pursuits in British Columbia and western Canada.I'm Robert Koopmans and this week I talked Dr. Adam Ford and Chloe Wright, a PHd student. Both are wildlife researchers who work and study at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus in Kelowna. The two are currently halfway through an ambitious research project on southern B.C.'s mule deer. Using GPS collars and remote cameras, they are mapping movement patterns and ranges of mule deer across wide, diverse landscapes. While the work is not yet complete, the research has already turned up several interesting insights about mule deer, including which of B.C.'s predators have the most apparent impact on deer herds. ,,,, Already, the work is clearly showing the importance of habitat, as the GPS tracks collected so far show deer often move long distances — as much as 100 kilometres — between summer and winter ranges, using predictable migration routes.  I talked with the two researchers about many aspects of their research, including how it might one day be used to benefit deer populations…***** Thanks for listening to this week's episode. Pre-order the new Babylon Bee Best-Of Coffee Table Book coming in 2020! Show Outline Introduction - Kyle and Ethan welcome Jon Gabriel to the podcast.  Stuff That’s Good -  Ethan- Rise of Jordan Peterson documentary Kyle- Tuttle Twins Books Jon - A Confederacy of Dunces Story 1 - Toilet Paper Crisis Solved As Government Prints Trillions Of Fresh, Soft Dollar Bills According to Thomas Massie this isn’t a $2.2 Trillion stimulus; it is a $6 trillion stimulus when you factor in all the unaccountable actions by the Federal Reserve and US Treasury The Federal Reserve lowered interest rates to 0% and set reserve requirements at banks to zero. When Americans get a $1200 check, but the bill is $2 trillion, each American’s tax burden to pay it off will be $13,333.  Inflation is the increase of the money supply, not the immediate increase in consumer prices. Effects won’t be felt immediately and equally dispersed throughout the economy’s industries.  Austrian economics teaches that this is how bubbles form in certain industries and systematic malinvestments of resources take place in the first place. The higher forms of production get bid up first, they have the first crack at the “free money”. They go crazy building factories and end products that there are no real savings to buy at the end of the road. Boom and then bust. Story 2 - China: 'We've Completely Cured Coronavirus And Everything Is Fine Here And No One Is Allowed In To Check' Their numbers are pretty low. They told World Health Org coronavirus wasn’t spreading from person to person and the WHO tweeted that out January 14! Why does WHO defend China as in this CNBC article?  China stopped their lockdown protocols but then suddenly closed movie theaters again? Orders for urns much greater than reported deaths? Story 3 - Government Accidentally Shuts Itself Down With Ban On Non-Essential Businesses I really miss Adam Ford.  Now it’s just the libertarian bee. How are we deciding what is essential or not Is it dangerous to cede the idea that church is “non-essential” Topic of the Week - Talking to Jon Gabriel about reading old books to gain a sense of perspective. "We will continue to monitor the ongoing developments," the President said in his post. "We have the best experts anywhere in the world, and they are on top of it 24/7!" CNN recently posted an Coronavirus task force another example of Trump administration's lack of diversity…  “It's a statement that's as predictable as it is infuriating: President Donald Trump's administration lacks diversity… They communicate a "patronage network that everyone is operating under," as Eric Yellin, an associate professor of history and American studies at the University of Richmond, told The Washington Post last year, about a different set of photos. "Having that network be interracial is really important. But the visuals that have come to define the Trump administration say something else, too. They signal which people in a multi-racial, half-female country Trump values the opinions of: mostly white men who are mirror images of the President himself. Story 2 - Uh-Oh: Sanders Campaign Texting 'Gulag For You' To People Who Aren't Voting For Bernie Project Veritas (James O’Keefe) continues to release candid camera clips of Bernie state campaign staffers (latest video highlights four of them) No Comment from the campaign No corporate media is covering it They’re all still employed.   Adam Ford Recommendation:  Go read the Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. In today's episode we talk about anxiety and a text that helps through times of anxiety. We also talk about General Anxiety Disorders so that we can better understand those who struggle from a psychological issue rather than mere "worrying". Additionally, I spoke about those who are struggling with whether or not they are saved and those who are struggling with prayer, biblical study, etc. On this topic we also talk about the paradox of apathy in this situation. Adam Ford is the man behind the prolific and often viral producing online comic-strip Adam4D.  He's a Christian, a husband, and father of three young boys.  Back in 2014, he quit his job to create comic strips full-time.   Since launching the Contradict – They Can't All Be True Facebook page to help promote my book by that title, I have regularly found myself sharing Ford's work.  Those posts generally draw many likes and shares.  His strips are often times found on many other Christian social media pages, typically groups or individuals who accept that the Bible is the inerrant, inspired Word of God.  Groups and individuals who are not labeled as liberal Christians or heretics!   When he's not using presuppositional apologetics to tear down false-worldviews, or picking apart the lies of Darwinian Evolution, Ford is typically highlighting the pitfalls of legalism and self-justification within Christian circles, or the way verses are often times ripped out of their context and twisted to mean something that was never implied within the text.   The Gospel typically had predominance in his doctrinal and homiletical comic strips, so he gains many fans who recognize that we truly are saved solely by the work of God that faith really is a gift and work of the Holy Spirit.   But sometimes, even when we are pointing to Jesus as the author and perfecter of our faith, the only one who works in our conversion and salvation, we can still twist Scripture.  And when Jesus and his saving work is front and center, it's easier for us conservative mongergists to clap, clap, clap and share, share, share, when we shouldn't.   I think Adam Ford took a misstep when he was taking a swing at the prosperity Gospel preachers in his strip entitled, “Good News: We Are Not David.”  I saw many people share this strip, people I personally know, but I couldn't hit the like button this time, and I couldn't hit the share button without posting a critique.   For this episode, I gathered Conni Schramm, back from episodes 7 and 64, Jon Rutherford, back from some recent episodes, and Jonathan Platt, who was sitting on the wall like a fly, but kept  hopping on a mic to interject questions.   http://adam4d.com/david/

Brand funded TV and video content for travel & tourism: Ep #41

Tourism Tweetup the Podcast

When we’re talking about video and television, brand-funded content in the industry refers to content that is funded by a brand or advertiser, rather than a TV network. On Tourism Tweetup the Podcast we chat with travel presenter and producer Adam Ford and we’ll be talking about Branded TV. Yes I know it is probably sounds like a slight move away from our typical tourism social media discussion but I don't know much about Branded TV so its a great chance to learn and its important to look at a range of content options and see which are right for your marketing mix. We hear about the rise and rise of video so I think this discussion is relevant and important. Lets see what we can learn   When we’re talking about video and television, brand-funded content in the industry refers to content that is funded by a brand or advertiser, rather than a TV network. On a more grassroots level though, it’s really about taking a brand’s key marketing messages and USP’s and integrating those messages into the production of editorial content – be that for television, online or social media. Brand funded content can be an incredibly marketing tool because you are taking your key message and creating relevant editorial content that users can engage with and potentially value. It’s a very potent marketing tool but it does come at a cost. It’s estimated that the brand-funded content market on Australian TV is around $200 million.   It goes further than product placement. In branded content the brand’s message is integral to the content, rather than just playing an arbitrary role within the content.   A high profile example of brand-funded content that’s often cited is Better Homes and Gardens, where parts of the program are funded by products. But there are lots of others. Weekend travel programming often falls under the brand-funded content umbrella. We produced three series of Tour the World on this basis (can explain more about the show here). In our instance, the programme was charged a fee by the network to broadcast the show and that fee and the production costs to make the show were recouped from the brands featured in the show. But there are no hard and fast rules about the structure. It’s often quite difficult for brands to understand how brand-funded content works. The idea of paying the networks to screen content seems totally at odds with the way most of us perceive TV production – i.e.: that the network would pay to make or buy content and make income through advertising. But networks are increasingly looking at this model. Is it relevant to travel and tourism brands as travel totally lends itself to great brand-funded content, although the costs can be prohibitive depending on the scale of productions. OK, so the reality is that the cost of producing and broadcasting brand-funded travel content in peak viewing periods on our main channels is going to be well out of the reach of the majority of tourism and travel brands, although there are some that are doing it. But what is interesting for this discussion though is to get smaller brands thinking about creative, cost-effective ways that they can embed their key messages in editorial content in a relevant way and get it front of potential customers.   So the process might be along the lines of the following. 1. Look at your USPs and key marketing pillars. What’s unique about your product? What lends itself to video content marketing (a visual medium)? What are your customers actually interested in seeing? How can you engage them? 2. Consider TV but look at the secondary Freeview channels, Pay TV or perhaps the data-casting channels. There are lots of opportunities there. Explore ideas for shows. Look at ways that you can take what you do and make it relevant as content to the audience you want to target. 3.

Adam Ford, a lawyer by profession, is the founder of Atsby New York Vermouth and is in studio with Joe Campanale for this week’s episode of In the Drink. Inspired by a vermouth he tasted in Italy, Adam relays that he then sought to create an American vermouth using local, artisanal ingredients. In the process of researching the perfect combination of botanicals for his product, he discovered the long-forgotten history of what was once America’s most glamorous spirit, and so his new book, “Vermouth: The Revival of the Spirit That Created America’s Cocktail Culture” was born. Ford lives in New York City with his family and produces his vermouth on the North Fork of Long Island. Looking for cocktail inspiration? Tune in to this great episode! This program was brought to you by Michter’s. “When I was studying vermouth and figuring out how make it, no one was talking about wormwood, and my understanding was that it was somewhat of a relic. So when I made my vermouth, I didn’t use it… I didn’t realize it was going to start this big debate!” [12:02] “Vermouth has a ten-thousand year old history!” [19:36] —Adam Ford on In the Drink

Purser Explores The World

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We are living in the future. We're living at a time when the first true cybernetics are being developed, when people can realistically say that they have a bio lab in their garage. We're standing on the edge of a change, something that could transform humanity like nothing that has come before. Some people call this the Singularity. The point at which everything merges together and we have no idea what's going to come out the other side. Adam Ford is a man who has been pondering the singularity for a while. He is going to lead us through, what the Singularity is, what Transhumanism actually means and what we might expect down the track. Show notes: In the show Adam mentions the Future Day event. At the time of recording there were tickets available.
