And so what I mean by that is I think a brand has to understand what their core competencies are, and they have to understand the value that they are creating for their customer. And what is debiting that value? So our mission statement as an organization is to do the heavy lifting of e-commerce so our clients can focus on what they do best."26:10 Your core values will enable technical competencies - Dusty: "There are certain core values that are absolute buzz saws. And if you run into that one, it's a buzz saw. You're not gonna make it here if you just don't believe that. So looking for people that are core-value-focused, are people-focused, they understand that what we do is done through the hard work of people, who have a get-stuff-done bias or just GSD, it was get it done, and are client-centric. So it was kind of four big buckets of things that I'm looking for that transcends or enables technical competency." Find out more about Dusty in the links below:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dustyholcomb/Website: https://redstagfulfillment.com/

In today's episode, I chat with Preeti Adhikary, a NYC-based Consultant with Blue Ivy Ventures, a firm and community of Yale alumni investors, executives, entrepreneurs, and innovation enthusiasts that have raised over $1 billion in funding across 1,000 unique investments. Preeti and I connected on LinkedIn a few months back. I was knee-deep in networking with individuals in the venture capital space, and as I was completing my due diligence, Preeti quickly differentiated herself as a professional with purpose, drive, and a strong desire to reach underrepresented communities. We chatted about her story - from Nepal to NYC, highlighted by stops in Singapore and Vancouver along the way. I really wanted to dig deeper into her motivations and the inevitable trials and tribulations, along the way, that culminated in the launch of the Great Nepalese Diaspora. And we discussed her views on the broader venture capital industry - what's changed, and what still needs to change. I asked for her impressions regarding what makes today's entrepreneurs successful, and what she looks for as a Venture scout. We ended with an important conversation regarding underrepresented communities, and why their success is so important for our collective well-being.It was such a pleasure connecting with Preeti. When we say “reflection,” what comes to mind? Is it sitting in meditation, in a meadow or a sacred space?. Or is it sitting at your desk, taking a second to look back at your life or career? Either way, its something that no one has time for these days, right?Joseph Badarocco is the John Shad Professor of Business Ethics at Harvard Business School. He has taught courses on business ethics, strategy, and management in the School's MBA and executive programs. He is also the faculty chair of the Nomura School of Advanced Management in Tokyo.Joseph's current research focuses on what counts as sound reflection for busy men and women who have serious responsibilities and face hard, practical problems. His books include Step Back, Defining Moments: When Managers Must Choose between Right and Right, and Leading Quietly: An Unorthodox Guide to Doing the Right Thing.Greg and Joe talk about cultivating character in leaders, what counts as reflection, different kinds of attentional states, and having multiple role models.Episode Quotes:How people react to talking about “reflection”I ultimately interviewed about a hundred people, managers at all levels of organizations, some of them twice, it was about 150 interviews. And asked them, what do you think reflection is? And do you do it? And if so, when and how? An interesting reaction I got from a lot of them initially was along the lines of what you just said. They said, I'm sorry, but I'm really the wrong person. I don't have any time to reflect. I said, well, let's just talk a little bit further. And what became clear to me after a while was they had a image of reflection, which is a sort of a quiet, solitary, go up to the mountain sort of experience. The everyday work of managersI think we often demean the everyday work of managers and a lot of other people by saying what really matters in a company is what we're doing in our communities, the breakthrough technologies. Those things of course are important. But what you do day by day, building a stronger company, stronger organization, good jobs for people developing their skills, pride in working together and accomplishing something. You're never going to be on the cover of a business magazine, ( not that they exist anymore), but it still matters. Reflection isn't always done aloneAnother thing that a lot of people mentioned to me, these are very busy people, is it for them reflection wasn't solitary. So going up to the mountain is, thats a solitary image. But there were a couple people, either in their lives or often people at work, that they talked with fairly often, sometimes just briefly, but the sort of tone of the conversation was different. They were revealing a little more of what was on their minds.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at Harvard Business SchoolProfessional Profile at Keynotes.orgJoseph Badarocco on LinkedInHis Work:Joseph Badarocco in Harvard Business ReviewStep Back: Bringing the Art of Reflection into Your Busy Life Questions of Character: Illuminating the Heart of Leadership Through LiteratureDefining Moments: When Managers Must Choose Between Right and Right Managing in the Gray: Five Timeless Questions for Resolving Your Toughest Problems at WorkThe Good Struggle: Responsible Leadership in an Unforgiving World Leading Quietly: An Unorthodox Guide to Doing the Right Thing

Interview with Laurel Grodman, Director of Admissions for Analytics and Evaluation at Yale SOM [Show Summary] Laurel Grodman, Director of Admissions for Analytics and Evaluation at Yale SOM, shares her perspective on how Yale differentiates itself from its competition and what it takes to be a successful applicant. The school has experienced explosive year-over-year growth in application volume for the last five years. Let’s learn what Laurel sees for the future. Yale SOM: The Curriculum, Admissions, and What the Future Holds [Show Notes] It gives me great pleasure to welcome for the first time to Admissions Straight Talk Laurel Grodman, Director of Admissions, Analytics and Evaluation at Yale School of Management. Laurel is a Yalie through and through. She earned her BA at Yale University in 2002 and her MBA from Yale SOM in 2006. After working for Citigroup and Unilever she returned to Yale as Senior Associate Director for Career Development in 2010. In 2014, she became the Director of Admissions for Analytics and Evaluation. Let’s start with the basics. Can you give me a brief overview of the full-time MBA program at Yale SOM, focusing on differentiators? [1:59] I like to start with our mission, which is to educate leaders for business and society, which is the founding mission of the school and brings everything together. That mission in and of itself is a differentiator in terms of the candidates it attracts and where alumni focus their careers, but in addition to that there are three things: 1. We aim to be the business school most integrated with its home university. You really are part of Yale more broadly, with access to classes across the entire university. You can choose electives in any number outside of the school and we encourage students to take advantage of that. 2. Our objective is to be the most distinctly global business school in the U.S. We have a global studies requirement so every student will engage globally at least once. That is fueled by our membership in the Global Network for Advanced Management which is a network established six years ago that brings together 30 business schools from around the world to provide travel options and global experiences. 3. Our integrated curriculum: we teach the business fundamentals and we teach them well, but beyond that we go a step further in terms of how it all works together. Beyond traditional core curriculum we organize around organizational perspective. It’s much more deliberate in terms of how courses work together – with co-teaching, and experts from across entire university. Organizational problems require you to pull from a bunch of different areas so that is how we like to teach it to students. What’s new at Yale SOM? [7:05] We’ve continued our streak of strong new faculty hires in all areas. We’ve also continued to build our master degree programs. We have a masters in systemic risk, and we are bringing in our inaugural class in Master of Management Studies in Global Business and Society, a small but probably growing program for early career students. This brings an additional voice to campus, more perspective to the class which is great. We are also in the midst of a search for our next dean, in its earlier stages - more info gathering at this point. Is the global nature of Yale mostly due to the network of 30 schools or is it supplemented by the more traditional global treks, exchanges, etc. [9:50] I think it’s both. Yale was certainly a global place to be before the network, but it has been expanded based on the global network weeks. Twice a year 700 students will travel to one of 17 or so campuses to learn from a week in that campus/region’s area of expertise in a truly global classroom, from all 30 schools. That kind of opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the network, but we’ve always had a strong international community, to bring global perspective to the classroom What is something really cool that a Yale grad is doi...

We grant one degree, and one degree only, the MBA. We don't permit more than 20 per class and we're totally unique, for anyone else, I think. We do things that even the top tiered business schools in the area do not do. For example, we do consulting in every single course, a requirement of our students in teams of four. It's pro bono, and that's another something that your listeners might be interested in. We also hire professors from the best schools in the country, in addition to our regular professors, all of which have doctorates from accredited universities. So, all these things are unique, we're a little bit different from anyone else.    Need to work ON your business? Start with a free assessment at www.BizGrowth123.com
