From Olympic training to injury prevention, Luxembourg hosts the world's brightest minds to prove why maths might just be sport's secret superpower. After a round-up of mid-week news with Sasha Kehoe, my guests this week are: - Prof. Christophe Ley – Main organiser of MathSport International; leads the Modelling, Interdisciplinary Research, Data Science, Applied Mathematics and Statistics group at the University of Luxembourg.  - Prof. Romain Seil – World-renowned orthopaedic knee surgeon, IOC advisor, Director of the Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal Diseases Division at Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg; co-founder of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, knee Surgery and Arthroscopy - ESSKA's Pediatric ACL registry and previous President of ESSKA, amongst many other organisations. - Prof. Thorben Hülsdünker – Professor in Performance Neuroscience and Sport Neurophysiology, Head of the Neurophysiology and Motor Control Research Area at LUNEX. - Alwin de Prins – Former Olympian and Managing Director at the Luxembourg Institute for High Performance in Sports (LIHPS) - Katarzyna Szczerba – PhD student with Prof. Ley, using machine learning with medical data to best use this data for injury prevention, and much more.  This week on The Lisa Burke Show, we dive deep into a blend of brain and brawn as Luxembourg hosts the 11th International MathSport Conference. While it may sound niche, what's unfolding here could revolutionise how athletes train, recover—and even avoid career-ending injuries. And not just athletes as many injuries are caused by people unprepared for activities they undertake once a year, such as skiing. Held from June 4–6 in the Coque and LUNEX University, the conference unites elite athletes, data scientists, surgeons and policymakers to explore how mathematics, data science and AI are transforming global sport. A Surgeon's Warning Professor Romain Seil, Luxembourg's globally celebrated knee specialist, put it bluntly: "If I could ban two sports for injury prevention, it would be football and alpine skiing." His data from years in the operating room is compelling. ACL injuries are devastating, often leading to early joint replacements. Professor Seil hopes we can increasingly pool real data to reform training, and embed prevention strategies from grass-roots to Olympic levels. “Coaches often don't realise the long-term damage until multiple players are injured. Data is how we change that.” Brains Behind the Brawn Professor Thorben Hülsdünker of LUNEX added another dimension with a focus on the connection of our body with our brain. He studies the neurophysiology of elite performance, from how athletes see and react, and how training can rewire the brain. “The brain is the next frontier of sports training,” he said. “Understanding it will define the next generation of champions.” Prof Hülsdünker knows that the best training targets both muscles and minds, combining sport science with neuroscience. AI Gets Personal PhD student AI-enhanced Cox Model blends machine learning with statistical models to predict runner injuries, and other medical issues, before they happen. “We're building tools that doctors and coaches can understand: simple, interpretable, but powerful enough to prevent injury.” Her AI-enhanced Cox Model is one of the standout presentations at MathSport 2025. From Pool to Policy Alwin de Prins, a three-time Olympic swimmer and now Director of LIHPS, reflects on what's changed since his competitive days: “I never had this level of support as an athlete. Now, our goal is to optimise not just performance, but well-being and life after sport.” His mission includes dual career planning, athlete health, and placing Luxembourg firmly on the map as a sporting—and scientific—nation. Why Luxembourg? Why Now? Professor Christophe Ley, the heart of this year's conference, pulled it all together: “Sport is full of data. We want to extract meaning from it—not just for medals, but for health, safety, and strategy.” With keynote talks ranging from sports analytics to injury prevention and economics, MathSport 2025 puts Luxembourg at the centre of a growing global movement: data-driven sport. https://www.linkedin.com/in/alwindeprins/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/christophe-ley-b71607166/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/romain-seil-9952172a/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/thorbenhuelsduenker/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/katarzyna-szczerba-4402b9192/ Get in touch  Tune in to The Lisa Burke Show on Today Radio Saturdays at 11am, Sundays at noon, and Tuesdays at 11am. Dementia is not inevitable, 07/03/2025

Many of us are lucky to grow older, and in Europe there is an aging demographic. With this come the diseases of aging such as dementia and a burden on family and society for care. For a long time people have thought this inevitable but we will learn today that, as with so many diseases, lifestyle changes from a young age can counteract this, to reduce the risk of getting dementia and also stabilising mental decline. In 2021, 20.8% of the EU population was aged 65 years or older. In 2019, an Alzheimer Europe report on the prevalence of dementia estimated that there were about 9 million people living with the disease in Europe. This number is projected to double by 2050, rising towards 19 million in the European region. Globally, there are around 55 million people worldwide who are living with dementia. However, research is now showing that up to 45% of dementias could be prevented: by addressing a range of modifiable risk factors, at different stages of our lives. My guests today are: Dr. Ange Bradshaw: Director for Research at Alzheimer's Europe Dr. Joëlle Fritz: Research and Strategy Specialist, Luxembourg Institute of Health Dr. Francesca Mangialasche: Geriatrician, Division of Clinical Geriatrics: Alzheimer Research Center Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet and Executive Director of the World-Wide FINGERS Global Scientific Coordinating Center at the FINGERS Brain Health Institute Hassan Fadli: Founder, 5 Ironmans Beat Alzheimer's Association The 2024 World Alzheimer's report noted that 80% of people think dementia is a normal part of ageing, and 65% of healthcare professionals. Only 2% of the population are affected by rare genetic factors but for most of us this is not the case. ‘Modifiable risk factors' can be replaced to deter and stall dementia. Francesca Mangialasce is based at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, and also works as executive director of the ‘FINGERS' Brain Health Institute, founded by Professor Mija Kivipelto, a world renowned researcher in the field of Alzheimer's disease and Dementia. FBHI is dedicated to promoting healthy brain aging and preventing cognitive impairment and dementia through innovative multi-domain clinical research and the fast translation of these results into personalised clinical practice. Brain is our main capital, and there is so much we can do to promote brain health. Studies have show that cardiovascular and metabolic disorders such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high blood sugar or diabetes are risk factors for dementia. There are many other emerging factors such as hearing impairment, vision loss, impaired oral health.  Being mentally, physically and socially active during life is important to reduce the risk of memory problems in old age. Secondary and tertiary prevention is also really important, even at the later stages of disease with therapies including art, dance and cognitive stimulation therapy .  The FINGER study across 70 countries shows that a multi-domain approach can benefit cognition:exercise, healthy diet, cognitive training, good control of metabolic/vascular disorders, and social stimulation. Stigma Hassan Fadli's father faced stigma in the village he lived all his life. This stigma deepens the pain of the suffering, knowing you are losing ‘yourself'. It is also a burden for the caregivers at a time when family and friends need the most help to support their loved one.   Hassan promised his father to work towards breaking this stigma and founded the 5 Ironmans initiative. Hassan has also made a documentary of his advocacy work alongside the endurance sport to reach people from children in schools across Europe to the Queen of Sweden.  His aim is to bring brain health into normal conversation, break the stigma, and integrate brain health awareness into public discourse.  Luxembourg support Joëlle Fritz is working  as Research and Strategy Specialist at the Luxembourg Institute of Health where she aims to bridge research to clinical care. "Programme démence prevention" (pdp) is a programme raising awareness on modifiable risk factors for dementia prevention and promotes life style changes. PDP is an integrated prevention concept funded by Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security. PDP is currently coordinated by the Centre Hospitalier  de Luxembourg in collaboration with national institutions (Luxembourg Institute of Health and Luxembourg Centre for System's Biomedicine at the University of Luxembourg) and partner associations (listed below). It is important to start as early as possible in the prevention of dementia, and so the PDP Braincoach app was created, accessible via browser to everyone also outside Luxembourg: www.pdp-app.lu Associations related in Luxembourg: L'Association nationale des diététiciens du Luxembourg: www.andl.lu ZithaAktiv: www.zithaaktiv.lu   Club Seniors of HELP asbl: www.help.lu Club Senior “Schwaarze Wee” Dudelange:   www.schwaarzewee.lu Lëtzebuerger Verein fir Gediechtnistraining: www.lvgt.lu NEUROvitalis home and digital Info-Zenter Demenz:   www.demenz.lu Association Luxembourg Alzheimer (ala) : www.ala.lu  Longevity with health  The results are clear, for dementia and living a long life with good health: we need to put in place good habits of physical, social and mental health.  Links to the notes above: https://www.5ironmansbeatalzheimer.com www.pdp.lu https://www.alzheimer-europe.org https://fbhi.se/sv/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/fingers-brain-health-institute/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/miia-kivipelto-8a8b1b3b/ https://www.chl.lu/fr https://m3s.gouvernement.lu/en.html https://www.uni.lu/lcsb-en/ https://ki.se/en

From a reflection of the COP29 results & what we can do, to Office Hours and a rousing invite to sing Christmas Carols in Echternach next weekend. On this week's show we talk to Andrew Ferrone about the latest COP29 results from Baku with Tessa Moeller. We also have Adam Petersen to tell us about his new show, Office Hours, on Today Radio. And Jeff Hemmen is inviting us all to either sing, play or come to watch the ‘Big Christmas Wind Orchestra & Choir' who will perform in Echternach on 15th December. My guests are: - Dr. Andrew Ferrone, Deputy Director for Climate and Sustainable Development, IPCC Head of Delegation Co-Coordinator of EU Negotiation team on science issues at United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - Tessa Moeller, upcoming Ph.D. student and contributing author to the last IPCC report - Dr. Adam Petersen, presenter of Office Hours on Today Radio - Jeff Hemmen, Organiser of the Big Christmas Wind Orchestra & Choir COP29 Andrew Ferrone & Tessa Moeller are not pessimistic about our climate future and work hard to bring their research to both policy makers and the general public. Andrew Ferrone is a seasoned attendee of the COP events and shares his insight of the latest one, where the key message was the adoption of a climate finance commitment aimed at supporting the Global South. He has not lost hope and can see that combined efforts in all domains, across all countries could, will, and already does make a difference. If you want to make a calculable difference yourself go to Carbon Nerd from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology. They have examples of how an individual can reduce their carbon footprint. Make research more actionable Tessa's work focusses on ‘overshoot', the likely move above the 1.5°C Paris Agreement's temperature target and its potential consequences for global mean sea level rise. The higher the temperature peaks, the longer the overshoot, the greater the risk of crossing irreversible thresholds in the ice sheets, which in turn, locks in faster and more substantial long-term sea level rise. You can read more about Tessa's work in her recent publication in Nature Communications article (summarized here ). Tessa's broader aim in the climate conversation is to make research more actionable.  By complete coincidence, Adam Petersen used to run oil rigs in Baku for BP, amongst other places. He talks about the brilliant science which also takes place on the rigs in order to minimise emissions and how fossil fuel scientists are a deep part of this transition conversation. Office Hours Adam Petersen's ‘business' show is more about understanding the business world around us here in Luxembourg, and in connection to the world around us. You can find his show, Office Hours, on RTL Play. The Big Christmas Wind Orchestra & Choir Jeff Hemmen fell in love with carol singing whilst studying in the UK, and so he brought it back to Luxembourg. Next weekend, everyone is invited to sign up and sing or play traditional carols in the beautiful and oldest city of Luxembourg, Echternach. This is an open invitation to all to enjoy a Christmas moment with the beautiful Christmas market, and you'll even be rewarded with a free Glüvin for your efforts. It is important you sign up for numbers however. He also talks about the wonderful work done by shareaction.org Listen to the show Tune in to The Lisa Burke Show on Today Radio Saturdays at 11am, Sundays at noon, and Tuesdays at 11am. "Working Hard is a Talent in itself" says Laurent Carol, Deputy Technical Director of the Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee, and former Olympic swimmer. In the first of two shows on the Olympics, my guests this week are: - Laurent Carnol - Deputy Technical Director, Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee; Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL), former Olympic swimmer - Dr Yves Dominicy - Sport Statistician - Loïc Hoscheit - ALAD Director - anti-doping agency Luxembour - Marie Muller - former Olympic athlete - Judo Laurent Carnol is the Deputy Technical Director of the Luxembourg Olympic and Sport Committee; Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois (COSL), and a former Olympian swimmer himself. Laurent took part in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. In London, Laurent got to the semi finals in 200m breaststroke and was a finalist several times in the European Championships for the same event. Aside from his own successful career as an elite athlete, Laurent was a teacher at the Sport Lycée in Luxembourg, a lecturer at Lunex University and Dual Career Coordinator at the Luxembourg Institute for High Performance in Sport. Laurent talks to us about the selection process which decides what delegation will eventually be going to the Olympics in Paris this summer. The qualification pathways and athlete preparation requires enormous effort not just from the athlete themselves, but also from the team around that athlete.   Yves Dominicy is a sport statistician and has written two books with Christophe Ley:   Science meets Sports: when statistics are more than numbers Statistics Meets Sports: What We Can Learn from Sports Data Sport analytics collects data to try to understand patterns therein. For instance, it is used for ranking and prediction, talent identification, scheduling and injury prevention. Machine learning is now being used in tennis to profile the emotional expressions of tennis players and link that to performance. Yves also mentions that tennis rankings may become more accurate if based on serve / return etc. rather than points. During Covid-19 in 2020, the International Swimming League organised a whole month of races providing an intense, short period to analyse the effect of multiple races on the performance of different profiles. The use of data analytics is extremely valuable to prevent injury. It is now possible to run risk profiles to plan around potential injury points for a person. Loïc Hoscheit is the Director of ALAD, Agence Luxembourgeoise antidopage. Luxembourg's independent anti-doping agency tasked with supervising the country's most high-level athletes and competitions; they are tasked with ensuring Luxembourg sends out clean athletes. ALAD also offers guidance to all athletes with the potential to qualify for the Olympics and ensures a solid testing programme is carried out prior to the Games within this group. The rules are complex, and keep changing. Naturally there is often a cloud of uncertainty around medication, but also supplements. Marie Müller, a judoka (judo player), received a wild card from the IOC in 2008 where she finished 9th in the Beijing Games. Between 2009 and 2012, Marie entered the world top 16 for judo in her category and qualified for the London Games in 2012. There she lost in a dramatic fight for bronze and finished 5th.Marie's entire career was overshadowed by injury, which ultimately made the decision to retire from judo for her in 2016. Marie and Laurent both talk about not being able to do their sport since they retired, but have turned to other sport.  Marie also talks about the pressure of weight in her sport. https://teamletzebuerg.lu/ https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-5856-4 https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-9273-5 https://www.alad.lu/

Their customer base is broad, as they encourage the use of HPC in data analytics and AI across industry, academia and public administrations. Emil Jimenez is Founder and CEO of MindBank AI. The idea was sparked by his daughter having a conversation with Siri. Emil decided to build a digital twin of himself so that he can live forever. Since then, it has grown to become a generative AI Personal Digital Twin, learning algorithms to duplicate your mind, optimise your mental health, personal development, and ultimately achieve immortality. Emil promotes the use of ‘Augmented' rather than ‘Artificial' Intelligence, to enhance our life from birth to death, and beyond. Nathaniel Rose is a neuro-technology researcher and the Co-Founder of Lymbic AI. This uses biometric brain signals to build authentication, to combat cyber attacks. We are likely to see more of these brain-computer interfaces as authentication exploits keep pace with technology. Nathaniel talks about the state of neurotech, and its potential in combating synthetic fraud and deep fakes. Both Emil and Nathaniel explain honestly why the US market is still great for start-ups. Rick Serrano is, amongst other things, a philosopher. He co-authored "Artificial Intelligence: the need for a human-centric approach".

"Innovate. Demonstrate. Elevate. Advance." says the UN as it launches its 8th year for Women in Science. To mark the day, in the lead up to Women's Day on 8 March, Research Luxembourg will release six videos following six female scientists in various stages of their life's work. Anyone who knows me knows I love science. And so it's a delight to host a show dedicated to the UN's eighth International Women and Girls in Science Day - 11th February. The theme this year is: "Innovate. Demonstrate. Elevate. Advance. I.D.E.A.: Bringing communities Forward for sustainable and equitable development" Why is it still important to have this conversation and shine a light on women in science? Well, there are many sets of statistics to show that women represent about a third of researchers, and yet only about 12% are members of national science academies. In AI, only one in five professionals are female. There's a pay gap for female researchers and their career's tend to be shorter, their work under-represented in high-profile journals and - for whatever reason - fewer women enter managerial positions in science and engineering. Research Luxembourg has collaborated with the Ministry for Equality (MEGA) for the second year running to release a set of six videos featuring six female scientists at various stages of their career. The theme is 'Be Brave - Women [& Girls] in Science and you can watch the trailer here. https://youtu.be/frIU2TrookA The goal of the campaign is to tell a variety of stories, and the many paths of women in science; to inspire and to give role models. You can see all the videos on the websites of Research Luxembourg and FNR over the course of the coming month up to 8 March, Women's Day. researchluxembourg.org/en/women-science-2023/ https://www.fnr.lu/womeninscience What is Research Luxembourg? Research Luxembourg is a joint initiative of the main actors in Luxembourg public research, with the support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research: Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), University of Luxembourg, Luxinnovation and Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR). As equality of educational opportunity is one of the pillars of the national research and innovation strategy, gender equality is a central aim for developing a fair research environment in which all talents can foster excellence. Research Luxembourg is represented in our studio conversation by Marc Schiltz, CEO of FNR. This campaign features six women and two of them join me in the studio: Sallam Abualhaija,a research scientist working on AI with software engineering at the University of Luxembourg's Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust, SnT; and Anne-Marie Hanff, a nurse now working towards her PhD with LIH to protect people with Parkinson's disease degenerating over time. I am also joined by Kristel Weinreich, Senior Recruitment Officer at LIST, and Carole Blond-Hanten, sociologist at LISER in the Labour Market Department. Please do subscribe to the podcast, rate and review on Apple and Spotify! I'd love to know what shows you want more of, and what ideas or guests you enjoy so that I can tailor my show to suit your requests.

"Every third bite of food we owe to pollination by bees" Pollinators are pillars of our ecosystems and on UN World Bee day I chat with Dr. Michael Eickermann from LIST. Also, Evgenia Paliy tells us about the Ukraine-Luxembourg Business Club's upcoming event. Dr. Michael Eickermann is an agricultural entomologist (someone who studied insects) at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) since 2007. He researches fundamental and applied national and international research projects on plant protection, apiculture (beekeeping) and the development of alternative controls for pests. He now also works on the impact of climate change on agricultural systems. For 10 years Michael has been a beekeeper himself. He has also been on the board of National Beekeeper Organisation and editor of the Luxembourgish Beekeeping Journal (Lëtzebuerger Beien-Zeitung). The 20th of May was declared the “World Bee Day” by the UN to raise awareness about the importance of honeybees as pollinators. The total economic value of pollination worldwide has been estimated at around $153 billion. "Every third bite of food we take we owe to pollination of plants by bees." Of course, honeybees also produce honey, wax, propolis, gelée royal and collect pollen. And alongside the honeybee, we celebrate butterflies, bumble bees, solitary bees and beetles as well as bats as vital pollinators. Due to the importance of pollination, the Agro-environmental Systems Group at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is studying the influence of agricultural practices on honeybee health since 2010 in a project called “BeeFirst”. Funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development and carried out in close collaboration with the Administration des Services Vétérinaires (ASV) and the Administration des Services Techniques de l'Agriculture (ASTA), several factors affecting colony losses in winter were identified. https://www.list.lu/en/research/project/beefirst/ https://www.list.lu/en/environment/environmental-sensing-and-modelling/group/agro-environmental-systems-group/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-eickermann-3905411a8/ Business Stands with Ukraine Evgenia Paliy dashed into my studio directly from a French law exam to tell us about an upcoming event to raise money and awareness for SMEs in Ukraine and independent artist refugees here in Luxembourg. Spice up your life: Cinnamon's weight loss potential   University of Tokyo Japan, March 2, 2022   The active compound in cinnamon maybe a more tolerable weight loss ingredient than chilli pepper's capsaicin, a small exploratory clinical trial finds. A single ingestion of the active compound cinnamaldehyde increased energy expenditure by nearly four more calories over a 90 minute period compared to placebo. The researchers say cinnamaldehyde may offer a more tolerable thermogenic alternative to compounds like capsaicin found in chilli peppers. Anti-obesity effects? Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are located throughout the body and mediate sensations such as pain, taste and temperature. TRP channels can be activated by natural compounds such as chilli peppers' capsaicin and previous animal studies have suggested this may impact energy balance and have an 'anti-obesity' effect. Capsaicin can increase metabolism in humans through sensory nerve stimulation. A single ingestion of cinnamaldehyde significantly increased energy expenditure by 3.6 kcal over the 90-minute period of the experiment when compared to placebo. Capsaicin and cinnamaldehyde enhanced postprandial fat oxidation and increased nose temperature until 15 minutes after ingestion. Cinnamaldehyde also increased the cheek and chin temperature, the facial thermography revealed. Heart rate variability analysis did not show any changes to the nervous system.   (NEXT)   Exposure to great outdoors boosted mental health during pandemic    University of Colorado, March 2, 2022   People exposed to more green space during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic reported significantly less depression and anxiety, according to new University of Colorado Boulder research published  in the journal PLOS One. The study also found that, at a time when mental health problems soared due to financial woes, supply shortages and nonstop news coverage of the virus, people sought solace in the great outdoors, with one-third spending more time there than they did pre-COVID. “This research shows how critical it is to keep parks and green spaces open in times of crisis. “It also shows that, as a public health measure, more effort should be made to put in green spaces and make them accessible.” The study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that green space can have a measurable impact on health.   (NEXT)   National study examines link between accountability to god, psychological well-being   Baylor University, March 2, 2022   Religious believers who embrace accountability to God (or another transcendent guide for life) experience higher levels of three of the four variables of psychological well-being – mattering to others, dignity and meaning in their lives, though not happiness – according to a study from researchers with Baylor University, Westmont College and Hope College. The study also found that this relationship is stronger among those who pray more often, suggesting that accountability coupled with communication may be a powerful combination for well-being. The study, Perceptions of Accountability to God and Psychological Well-Being Among US Adults, appears in Journal of Religion and Health and relies on data from the 2017 Baylor Religion Survey, a national survey of American religious beliefs, values and behaviors.   (NEXT)   Regular chocolate intake linked to enhanced cognition in cohort study   University of South Australia and University of Maine, March 2, 2022   Habitual chocolate consumption has correlation with better cognitive functioning, according to analyses of 968 people living in New York A study due for publication in the journal Appetite by researchers at the University of South Australia, the University of Maine and the Luxembourg Institute of Health (L.I.H.) examined the chocolate eating habits and cognitive performance of participants and assessed the eating habits of 968 people aged 23–98 years for 25 years.   (NEXT)   Acupuncture improves outcomes in carpal tunnel syndrome in part by remapping the brain   Massachusetts General Hospital, March 2, 2022   In a study reported in the journal Brain, a team of investigators based at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) sheds new light on exploring acupuncture for chronic pain disorders Researchers performed a sham-controlled acupuncture neuroimaging study of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a neuropathic pain disorder. Few chronic pain disorders have established biomarkers or measureable treatment outcomes. However, in CTS measurements taken at the wrist of the speed at which signals are transmitted along the median nerve are a well known and accepted biomarker.   (OTHER NEWS - JUST ONE IF NECESSARY BEFORE MCGOVERN)   Analysis: Nuclear Disaster in Ukraine Could Make Swaths of Europe 'Uninhabitable for Decades'   Russia's assault on Ukraine risks nuclear devastation "far worse even than the Fukushima Daiichi catastrophe of 2011," Greenpeace warns.   Common Dreams. March 2, 2022   The international environmental group Greenpeace warned Wednesday that Russia's intensifying assault is placing Ukraine's nuclear power facilities under serious threat, risking devastation "far worse even than the Fukushima Daiichi catastrophe of 2011." In a 12-page analysis, Greenpeace details the unique hazards posed by Russia's war on Ukraine, which maintains 15 nuclear power reactors and is home to the largest nuclear energy complex in Europe. That facility, known as the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, is currently surrounded by Russian troops looking to force their way through a makeshift blockade erected Wednesday by ordinary Ukrainians. Greenpeace's new brief argues that the Zaporizhzhia plant is especially vulnerable to an accident or attack stemming from Russia's invasion,. Greenpeace raises particular concern over the complex's susceptibility to electrical power outages, its storage of spent nuclear fuel, and risks posed by flooding given the facility's close proximity to the massive Dnipro river system. Severe damage to the plant, the group warns, could "render vast areas of the European continent, including Russia, uninhabitable for decades." "For the first time in history, a major war is being waged in a country with multiple nuclear reactors and thousands of tons of highly radioactive spent fuel," he continued. "The war in southern Ukraine around Zaporizhzhia puts them all at heightened risk of a severe accident."   (GUEST) GUEST - RAY MCGOVERN

Professor Dr Ulf Nehrbass, CEO of the Luxembourg Institute of Health, discusses new ways of thinking about disease and medical research. Ulf Nehrbass has become a relatively famous scientific face in Luxembourg due to his role as an advisor to the government on COVID-19 strategies. We touch on COVID in this conversation, but recognising a general ennui around the subject, we push on. Ulf wants to get on with the job in hand as CEO of the Luxembourg Institute of Health, LIH. Nehrbass' track record saw him lead and found the Institut Pasteur Korea, where he sourced an international team to become one of the first translational drug discovery institutes. Ulf was also CEO and founder of Qurient Therapeutics, a Biotech near Seoul, IPO since in 2016. Since then he created a French German translational centre Ksilink combining INSERM, Sanofi, Alsace Biovalley and BioPro. Always at the leading edge of novel ways of thinking about drug discovery and the changing language around how we view various diseases, Ulf explains how we can divide diseases into different sub-groups, with all sorts of patterns on a macro scale (biometrics) to the more established biochemistry around genes. Fascinatingly, Ulf explains how many diseases, or groupings of disease, can be attributed to an over- or underactive immune system. And therefore, figuring out one's belt of healthy immunity can equal disease prevention. Personalised medicine, precision medicine, translational medicine... it's all in here. And, according to Ulf, it's an extremely exciting time to be involved in medical research which is about to explode with new ideas, aided by AI and robotics.

In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Dr. Jean-Philippe Burckert. JP received his Master's in Chemistry with a specialization in Life Sciences from the University of Kaiserslautern in 2012 and completed his Ph.D. studies at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) in Bioinformatics and Computational Immunology. His Ph.D. work was presented at over 20 international conferences. After academia, JP joined the Bioinformatics consulting firm BISC Global as Senior Bioinformatics Consultant, where he helped to establish the new department in Boston, MA. Leveraging his rare skillset in deciphering immune repertoires, JP worked with over a dozen small and large pharma and biotech companies in the Cambridge and SF Bay area providing the specialized bioinformatics capacity for their immune-oncology, autoimmune disease, antibody discovery and vaccine design groups. JP is now the head of the computational and informatics efforts at Centivax and leads an amazing team of scientists and informaticists. In a statement on his episode:  “Jake set me up for success by putting together an amazing group of young scientists: Timothy “Tim” Young, our software engineer, Rachel Hovde our statistics and machine learning genius, Aishani Aatresh, a 17-year-old computational immunology magician and Michali Izhaky a biologist who wants to move into bioinformatics - and has done so successfully and in rapid time. So I tend to point them in the right direction and let them loose. They never cease to amaze me.” - Check out Distributed Bio Here: https://www.distributedbio.com/ Look at the NEWEST initiative (Including COVID-19 Research) HERE:  https://www.centivax.com  - If you want to support us, there are three ways to do so.
