Anyday founder Stephanie Chen saw a business opportunity in a common misconception: that microwaves are just for reheating. She designed cookware specifically for the appliance, and used content on her Shopify website, PR about the brand, and the endorsement of celebrity chef David Chang to build credibility and bust myths around microwave cooking. For more on Anyday and show notes: https://www.shopify.com/blog/anyday-myth-busting

Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Hey everybody, hope your summer was frickin' great. We're working on all-new episodes of A Little Bit Culty, coming in hot ANY DAY now, but for this sultry, late summery time we wanted to revisit our cool, culty archives and put together some mashups of our greatest hits for you. We'll be back soon with all new cult-busting content, and we're dropping fresh new episodes every week on Patreon in the meantime. Until we meet in the feed again - here's our first Summer Remix featuring some of our PERSONAL favorite interviews of all time. So let's do this shall we? —— If you're a cult member, you hate them… but if you're a fan of A Little Bit Culty, you can'thelp but love the three cult-busting guests we are featuring on today's episode. First up is the Amanda Montell, a writer, language scholar, and the author of two critically acclaimed books: Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism and Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language (HarperWave). Her books have earned praise from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and others, and Amanda is currently developing Wordslut for television with FX Studios. Amanda's writing has been featured in Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, Refinery29, and Who What Wear, where she formerly served as the Features & Beauty Editor. She is also the creator and co-host of the comedy-cult podcast, Sounds Like A Cult. Next is actor, activist, and epic badass Evan Rachel Wood whose impressive AF resume also includes: “Most likely to be hideously trolled by the Marilyn Manson stans of the world.” If you've seen the HBO Max mini-series Phoenix Rising which chronicles her fight to break away from the rocker formerly known as Brian Warner, you've already seen the culty wafting offa that dude like a bad cologne. We caught up with Evan to talk about her journey to hell and back, how she's doing now, and why she won't ever stop blowing the whistle on complete fuckery. As a note to our listeners, and our lawyers, Mr. Manson has repeatedly denied multiple sexual assault allegations from multiple women and is currently suing Evan for defamation over the accusations, claiming it's all part of an elaborate organized attack. Please note that conversations like the one you're about to hear can be traumatizing for abuse survivors. Listen to this episode with caution, and if you or anyone you know needs support, see our site for free resources. Also please note that we love Evan Rachel Wood and believe her without reservation. Sorry, not fucking sorry Manson Stans. Finally - and perhaps most controversially – is Ekhart Tolle – who is widely recognized as one of the most inspiring spiritual leaders in the world. His international bestsellers have been translated into 52 languages. And we can't verify this, but he might be one of the MOST quoted and/or misquoted contemporary spiritual gurus ever. Also, for the record, our listeners had a LOVE/HATE reaction to this guest. Can't please everybody! Let us know what you think. Also… Let it be known far and wide, loud and clear that… The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. GSM217: Your 9 iron is a short iron, so why is it designed like a long iron? Terry Koehler, a regular on Golf Smarter and creative genius behind the V-Sole wedge design introduces his newest line of wedges that provides a level of forgiveness and confidence in your bag that can immediately impact your scores. The loft in your irons progresses in 4 degree increments, but from your pitch to lob wedge, there's a 12 degree jump which is the same jump as your 5 iron to Driver! When you're inside of 150 yards, you need to be able to attack a very small target. I was not exposed to Thai cuisine much in my childhood, growing up in smaller Canadian towns in the 80s + 90s. But in my early 20s, I spent some time backpacking with my then boyfriend (now husband...yes, we've been together my whole adult life) throughout South East Asia from Singapore up through Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and to say that I fell in love with Thai food is an understatement. A cuisine that celebrates vegetables, lavishes dishes with coconut milk and a liberal use of herbs like Thai basil, tamarind, lemongrass, chiles and galangal? Um, sign me up….but at home, I have to admit that I had yet to expand my Thai cooking repertoire beyond a simple red curry until very recently. And even if you love Thai food too…you're probably in the same boat as me. Which is why you should listen to this episode: my friend Pailin Chongchitnant is a trained chef and host of the YouTube cooking show (with a whopping 1.7 million subscribers!) Hot Thai Kitchen, and she will teach you everything you need to know about cooking Thai at home without spending hours in the kitchen. I met Pai back in 2016 because we were both hosts of cooking shows on Gusto TV and we've been friends ever since…so I am excited to welcome her on the pod so you can learn how to cook Thai food at home... and get to know this talented chef and creator a little bit better. She's also got a gorgeous new cookbook, Sabai, which is all about easy and comfortable home cooking that will help you feel more confident cooking this flavourful cuisine. About Pailin Chongchitnant: Pailin is the creator and host of the YouTube cooking show Hot Thai Kitchen which is all about demystifying Thai cuisine for home cooks, with over 1.7 million subscribers. She's a trained chef and the author of 2 Thai cookbooks, Hot Thai Kitchen and the new Sabai: 100 Simple Thai Recipes for Any Day of the Week. On this episode we chat about: Pailin's circuitous path to culinary school via a nutrition degree Her mission to document all of her grandmother's signature recipes Pailin's decision to choose herself and start a YouTube channel What Pai believes is key to her longevity on YouTube The difference between Thai food in North America and Thailand The essential Thai ingredients you need in your kitchen…and where to find them The BEST Thai curry paste Why your taste buds are your MOST important cooking tool How to veganize Thai recipes and a lot of thoughts on vegan “fish sauce” What most of us are doing wrong (?!?) when we cook rice Support the Pod! Vermont―arguably the OG farm-to-table state―is celebrated through 100+ recipes and stories from celebrated pastry chef Gesine Bullock-Prado. When Gesine Bullock-Prado left her Hollywood life in 2004 and moved to Vermont, she fell in love with the Green Mountain State's flavors and six unique seasons. Spring, summer, fall, and winter all claim their place at this table, but a true Vermonter holds extra space for maple-forward mud season―that time of year before spring when thawing ice makes way for mucky roads―and stick season, a notable period of bare trees and gourds galore prior to winter. In My Vermont Table, Bullock-Prado takes readers on a sweet and savory journey through each of these special seasons. Oh Canada, we'll have on the program Chef Dale Mackay. Touring the world as Gordon Ramsay's right-hand at his Michelin-starred restaurants, the first Top Chef Canada winner and AAA Five Diamond Award winning Chef Dale MacKay is gearing up for a huge 2023 as he competes in the new season of Bravo's Top Chef: World All-Stars. Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, and Gail Simmons are back hosting Season 20 of the Emmy, James Beard Foundation and Critics' Choice Award-winning series which features 16 winners and finalists from 11 different Top Chef versions around the world competing for the ultimate World All-Stars title. This time the chefs will return to the kitchen to battle it out throughout London before moving on to the grand finale in Paris. This epic showdown marks the first time the flagship edition of Top Chef has gone abroad for an entire season. Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, MacKay's culinary career began as a fry cook in Vancouver, B.C. He then moved to London, England, where he began working at Gordon Ramsay's Claridge's, followed by stints in other Michelin-starred Ramsay restaurants in London, Tokyo, and New York City. He eventually returned to Vancouver to become the executive chef at Chef Daniel Boulud's Lumière restaurant, where the restaurant was awarded the AAA Five Diamond Award under his direction. You'll enjoy listening to Susan Everett Gravely, the Founder and the CEO of VIETRI., a lifestyle brand of Italian artisan-crafted dinnerware and home and garden accessories. VIETRI is now America's largest Italian ceramics importing company, partnering with numerous Italian manufacturers in various regions throughout Italy. VIETRI serves a customer base of over 2,000 specialty retailers and department stores in all 50 states and internationally. In her debut cookbook, ‘Italy on a Plate: Travels, Memories, Menus' published by VIETRI Publishing, Susan Gravely celebrates 40 years as Founder and Creative Director of VIETRI. With a foreword by Frances Mayes, author of Under the Tuscan Sun, Italy on a Plate is an exploration into what makes Italy so magical: its staggering beauty, unparalleled style, artistic legacy, and incredible food. The close friends Gravely has made during her years of Italian travels have graciously shared their homes and their favorite family recipes, and this book gives a culinary tour of Italy's flavors with recipes you will enjoy with loved ones for years to come. Happy to talk to Christine Flynn the proprietor of Good Earth Food and Wine and a partner at The Good Earth Farm. She is executive chef and partner at iQ Food Co., a restaurant group, a celebrated chef, writer, food stylist and photographer, and Christine's work has also appeared in The New York Times, WIRED, and Bon Appétit Magazine. She is a chef partner with Zing Pantry Shortcuts and her Buzz Hot Honey is available nationally. We'll talk about her National Bestselling cooking ‘A Generous Meal: Modern Recipes for Dinner' published by Penguin Random House Canada. In A Generous Meal, Christine Flynn shows us—contrary to popular belief—that you don't need a lot of time, money, or know-how to make good food. A simple potato can transform a so-so day into something special, a soup can warm you in more ways than one, and baking a chocolate cake is just another way of shouting, “I love you!” at the top of your lungs. A Generous Meal is a modern cookbook of over 100 recipes that anyone—from a novice to an experienced chef like Christine—can use to whip up restaurant-quality meals with ease. RMA-Episode 105 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 105: Skid Row Recovery. If you find yourself using drugs in a place like the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, a guy like Scott Mannheimer is someone you want in your corner. Kensington is a notorious skid row, where it is common to find addicts shooting up in broad daylight, hunched over in a stupor or passed out on the streets. Needles, syringes and garbage are littered across the sidewalks. Into this scene of urban desperation walks Scott, a former addict who had a spiritual awakening in front of a cheesesteak restaurant and decided to dedicate his life to helping addicts get clean. This week he sits down with Mike and Nat and shares his story. Also, the Week in Weird returns with a fresh bigfoot sighting (!) and Recovery in the News asks, are you ready to be assimilated by the Borg collective? You can find Scott at his website: Kensington Hope Please remember to SUBSCRIBE to the podcast on your favorite platform to get the latest episode delivered right to your devices as soon as it's released. RMA-Episode 102 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 102: Tough Love in the Boogie Down Bronx. This week on RMA, Mike and Nat review the 2000 documentary “Sister Helen.” Sister Helen Travis was a recovering alcoholic and Benedictine sister who spent the last years of her life running a 23-bed halfway house in the rough-and-tumble slum of the South Bronx. She embarked upon this rugged and dangerous ministry in response to the murder of her 15-year-old son, the loss of her husband to alcoholism, and the death of her other son from drugs. In various scenes, Sister Helen asserts her will in a unique brand of tough love, in a tough environment. We also read a new review and take a look at whether any amount of alcohol is beneficial to your health. (Spoiler: no.) All this and more, on a very special episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages. RMA-Episode 101 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 101: Drunk lawyers and sober Monksters. This week we take the pulse of the community, talk about how dry January is going, and also review the memoir The Addicted Lawyer by Brian Cuban. In The Addicted Lawyer, Cuban candidly shares his journey through addiction and recovery, and offers insight and guidance for other lawyers and law students who may be struggling with similar issues. He discusses the unique pressures and challenges faced by those in the legal profession, and provides practical strategies for managing stress and finding help. It's a ripping yarn with piles of cocaine and oceans of alcohol. We also hear from Ryna the recovering rhino, and talk about your poor mistreated liver. Last week at this time we were all ready to show up and tackle our goals in a big way. Then a 4-day storm swept most of the country and schools were cancelled and delayed and Christmas break seemed like it was never going to end and then we had to face reality after the holidays. So, anyway, can we get a re-do? The answer is a resounding YES! You can start on your goals ANY DAY. The date or month doesn't matter. For so many years one thing would knock me off course and then I'd just...give up, deciding it wasn't worth it. But, you can start over anytime. Re-focus, remember why you started and get back on track toward whatever you're working towards! So if you were hoping to read more in 2023 but haven't had time to crack a book, set aside time tonight or at lunchtime to dive into that book. If you have health goals, lace up those sneaks and get even 15 minutes in. Progress over perfection. We got this!

RMA-Episode 98 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 98: Recovery in the News. This week on RMA, Mike and Nat drill down into some drug policy issues that have been generating some controversy lately. Should cannabis be a Schedule 1 drug? How can we make sure that medically assisted treatment is available to all who would benefit from it? What can we do to help people getting out of prison maintain their programs? Should crack and powder cocaine be treated the same under federal law? IS the war on drugs a failure? All these questions ANSWERED. Or at least discussed. They're the masterminds behind Sight Unseen, our go-to design resource since 2009, and the authors of the new book How to Live with Objects that has helpful tips aplenty (along with ample inspiration). Plus: a hate-gift idea and a belated love letter to Normal People. How about a donation to Moms for Moms, pitched to us as an A+ hate-gift by a listener? Monica and Jill's book How to Live with Objects is out now! Wow, is it great—and what an ideal present for the “person who has everything” type. Their Thingies, coming through: oversize decor, miniature fountains (Monica's is from Lily Clark.), only buying the best version of a consumable something (Jill loves the Marie Veronique Barrier Lipid Complex, rice from The Rice Factory New York, and Glaser Organic Farms Almond Butter.), microwaves (David Chang Cooking at Home and Anyday cookware fans unite!), and saved search terms when exploring vintage objects. Our guest today is Michelle Tam, founder and co-creator of the renowned Nom Nom Paleo universe. Dubbed the Queen of Paleo Cooking, she's co-authored several cookbooks, The New York Times bestselling Nom Nom Paleo, Food for Humans, Ready or Not, and her most recent Nom Nom Paleo: Let's Go!. She is devoted to sharing paleo, gluten-free and Whole30 recipes, kitchen tips and tricks with a focus on ancestral health, quick and easy eats, and staying paleo while on the go. We chat about her initial discovery of paleo and how it successfully addressed digestion issues earlier in her life before delving into the ways the wide-reaching career that's come from it has impacted how she and her family eats on a daily basis. Along the way, we also get some great kitchen gadget recommendations, talk about boundaries and social media expectations, and hash out a Cracklin' Chicken recipe that will work for any busy family. More than a pure paleo evangelist, she thinks people should figure out what works for them in terms of diet, and actually pay attention to how food makes them feel. It's a fresh take, and one that we're hearing more and more of in the space as we move away from strict regimens and all-for-one wellness advice. RMA-Episode 90 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 90: Something Was Wrong. This week on RMA, Mike and Nat do a deep dive into an episode from the latest season of this amazing podcast, an Iris Award-winning true-crime docuseries about the discovery, trauma, and recovery from shocking life events and abusive relationships. Why are we talking about another podcast? It's not something we usually do, but since this episode touches on recovery, AlAnon, the criminal justice system, narcissism, sociopathy, arson and how to go on living when your world is falling apart around you, we figured it would be a good fit for RMA. We also have a Monkster's Speak, a rundown of Nat's big fat Greek vacation, and a discussion of Mike's weekend at the lake with boozy relatives. It's another two hours of RMA, coming straight into your earholes. RMA-Episode 89 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 89: Everything happens for a reason. Or does it? This week on RMA, Mike and Nat discuss this old bromide, how it pertains to recovery, and whether or not believing that there is a master plan for your life helps or hurts you stay sober. It's a far ranging discussion that touches on religion, philosophy, quantum mechanics and Schrodinger's cat, with a little Repo Man thrown in for good measure. We also have a Monkster's Speak, a new listener asks for some advice, and a rundown of summer vacations past and future. It's two hours of RMA, coming straight into your earholes. RMA-Episode 88 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 88: This week on RMA we explore the alleged link between substance abuse and creativity. Contrary to popular belief, creativity does not disappear when the alcohol and drugs are no longer available. Your genetic makeup remains the same, so the drive to take risks creatively is still there. Are creative people more prone to addiction? What are some strategies you can use to remain creative after the drugs wear off? We also have a Monkster's Speak, a new review, and a lot of discussion about what we've been up to lately. It's a lot of RMA. Can you handle it? Please remember to SUBSCRIBE to the podcast on your favorite platform to get the latest episode delivered right to your devices as soon as it's released. Steph Chen is the founder and CEO of Anyday—a modern cookware brand that makes products just for the microwave. Anyday dishes help you poach, toast, blanch, and even simmer food using the humble microwave. So far, the company has amassed major fans, including Momofuku founder David Chang. Steph was born in Hong Kong and moved to California when she was just three years old. After college, her father invited her to join the family business. Instead, she chose to explore a few different lives: Steph cooked in a restaurant in Hong Kong, worked at a plant-based company called Eat Just, and has even assisted Alice Waters at her iconic Chez Panisse. This episode, hear Steph's journey to creating her own cookware line centered around the microwave, and why she's betting big on this overlooked kitchen appliance. RMA-Episode 87 Show Notes: RMA-Episode 86: This week on RMA, Mike interviews Jesse Jarnow. Jesse is a writer, a DJ and the host of the Good Ole Grateful Deadcast, the official podcast of the Grateful Dead. He is also the author of Heads: A Biography of Psychedelic America. In order to understand the present popularity of psychedelics as a treatment modality for trauma and substance abuse, it's important to understand the history of these substances and their place in the American psyche. Mike and Jesse discuss that history, as well as the history of psychedelic therapy, the Grateful Dead, and how psychedelics are inexorably woven into the fabric of modern society. We also play a listener voicemail, read a listener email, and share what we've been up to. It's two and a half hours of RMA, coming straight to your earholes. I am starting my second 100 day challenge on Friday, July 1 and want to invite you to join me! I know it's a little short notice but 1) that's just less time to talk yourself out of it ;) and 2) you can start your own 100 day challenge ANY DAY you want! This challenge isn't about me and what I'm doing, it's about YOU becoming who you want to be by making and keeping small commitments to yourself. If you want to change your mindset and pick up a daily journaling practice that will radically improve your mindset then you can find my self-guided Alignment Journaling Course here! This course will teach you how to view yourself as who you want to be, align your mindset with that version of you and mentally rehearse the actions needed to live it out in your daily LIFE! Hint: why I journal out that method every-single-day. My personal 100 day commitment: 1. Daily Alignment Journaling to fill one page. 2. Daily expressed appreciation to my husband. 3. Daily expressed appreciation to my kids. 4. Daily physical touch with my husband. (especially entered the newborn stage!) 5. Daily screen limits with my phone of 4 hours a day or less! (No nighttime scrolling while nursing my baby, this goal keeps me committed to getting my work done each day and staying intentional every time I pick up my phone!) Are you in?!
