I'm back home from my road trip and am overdue talking to Ellen Bayens about things she has brought to our attention over the month of June on theceliacscene.com. Ellen was excited to tell us about an experimental test for celiac disease coming out of Australia. The test involves drawing blood and introducing a form of gluten to the blood to look for a specific reaction to show that the individual has celiac disease. Both Ellen and I described this as a “game-changer” with many practical uses for diagnosis within our community. Hopefully this test will eventually become a common diagnostic tool worldwide. A new study looks at the risk of kissing someone who has recently eaten gluten. It was a small study, but did indicate that the risk under the controlled circumstances was less than 20ppm and not a serious concern. Ellen and I spoke about the contributions Mike Rose made to the celiac community. Mike passed away earlier this year, but he is remembered for his years as a celiac volunteer and educator. I spoke to Mike about his investigation to find a safe retirement home for him and his wife. Ellen was helped by Mike when she first found out she needed to eat gluten free. Mike will be missed by many. Ellen was contacted again this year regarding her local school board looking for host families for international students who require a gluten free diet. There is a need for host families across the country, so if this is something you would like to do, please contact your local school board to see if there is a need in your area. I'll be recording with Ellen in the next week about things I learned during my recent gluten free road trip from Ontario to Vancouver Island. When Carrie Saunders discovered she had celiac disease, she finally had answers for years of feeling sick and disconnected from her body. But navigating a medical condition that requires eliminating foods, without falling back into a restrictive dieting mentality, wasn't easy.   In this episode, Carrie shares her story of going from chronic undernourishment to postpartum weight gain, and the long journey toward finding balance, healing, and body trust. We talk about the messy middle: how to take care of your health while staying grounded in intuitive eating, and how to listen to your body (and your gut, literally and figuratively) when you've spent years tuning it out.   This conversation is a must-listen for anyone navigating a medical diagnosis that requires dietary changes (like celiac, diabetes, high blood pressure, food sensitivities, chronic illness, etc.) or healing after a lifetime of diet culture.    Dietary changes for health don't have to equal deprivation. Carrie's story is going to help you see how to honor your body's needs without feeling like you're missing out on the foods you love, or on life experiences that involve food.   Episode Highlights:    – What it's like to discover celiac disease after years of confusing symptoms – How Carrie learned to eat gluten-free without falling back into dieting – The emotional side of weight changes and body image – How to trust your body again after feeling betrayed by it – Why restriction for medical reasons doesn't have to mean deprivation   Resources Mentioned   - Listen to The Gluten Free Engineer Podcast with Carrie Saunders - Join The Gluten Free Engineer Facebook Group with Carrie Saunders   Read the full episode show notes here.   Resources for Your Intuitive Eating Journey   Intuitive eating education on the blog Work with Katy Explore the self-paced mini-course Stepping Off The Dieting Rollercoaster   Connect with Katy Harvey   Website: KatyHarvey.net Instagram: @katyharvey.rd Facebook: KatyHarveyRD    Subscribe and Review   Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts   I would be thrilled if you could rate and review my podcast! More than any other time of year, people are reading, sharing, and focused on educating and raising awareness about this disease. There's nothing I like seeing better than info and resource-sharing. There's also nothing I like LESS than seeing info shared that isn't fact-based but based solely on personal experience. While there's nothing wrong with saying ‘this was my experience' in some circumstances, often times this info is used to make important decisions that can impact health. As a member of many online Celiac and Gluten Free groups, the same questions and issues come up again and again. I reflect on how having so much choice can sometimes make eating out harder rather than easier when you live with celiac disease. You'll hear about my experiences using the Find Me Gluten Free app, how our meals ended up looking very different to what I usually prefer, and how understanding my human design helped me realise that sometimes having fewer options actually brings more peace, clarity, and enjoyment. If you've ever wished for more gluten free restaurants, or found yourself stressed by too many choices, this episode will help you reframe your thinking and find gratitude in simplicity. Unlocking the Truth Behind Gluten-Free Living – It's More Than Just a Diet Are you struggling with health issues that seem impossible to solve? Have you ever wondered if going gluten-free could be the answer? In this post, we'll dive deep into my personal journey, the undeniable health benefits of a gluten-free lifestyle, and why it's so much more than just a diet change. My Journey to Discovering the Power of Living Gluten-Free For over 15 years, I suffered from chronic migraines. They were so debilitating that I had to give up my career as a dental hygienist. The bright lights were unbearable, often making me vomit or even pass out from the pain. Desperate for relief, I went back to school to become an OB/GYN sonographer, just to work in the darkness of an ultrasound room. But the migraines continued. When my daughter Chanelle was two years old, her health took a terrifying turn. She was dangerously underweight, her belly was swollen, and her hair began falling out in large clumps. Doctors feared the worst: cancer, leukemia, even kidney failure. After countless tests, the answer finally emerged—Chanelle had celiac disease. As I supported Chanelle through her gluten-free journey, something incredible happened. My own symptoms started to fade. The constant migraines, fatigue, and brain fog all began to lift. That's when I realized that celiac disease had likely been the root cause of my health problems all along. The Top Health Benefits of Going Gluten-Free The truth is, going gluten-free is about so much more than just cutting out a protein. Here are some of the incredible benefits people experience: Reduced Inflammation: Eliminating gluten can alleviate joint pain, improve digestion, and reduce overall inflammation throughout the body. Better Digestive Health: No more bloating, gas, diarrhea, or discomfort. Many find relief from chronic digestive issues. Enhanced Energy Levels: Going gluten-free can lead to better sleep, sharper focus, and more sustained energy throughout the day. Clearer Skin: Fewer breakouts, reduced redness, and healthier, glowing skin. Mental Clarity: No more brain fog! Improved cognitive function and clearer thinking are common benefits. Overcoming Skepticism on Your Gluten-Free Journey Making a drastic lifestyle change often leads to doubt and skepticism from others—or even yourself. But here's the truth: Going gluten-free isn't a trend or a fad. It's a legitimate health decision that can transform your life. If you're feeling resistance from family or friends, try these tips: Educate Yourself: The more you know about celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, the better you can explain your journey to others. Share Your Why: When you communicate why you're going gluten-free, people are more likely to understand and support your decision. Stick to Your Decision: Confidence in your choice will encourage others to respect your lifestyle. Practical Steps to Thrive on a Gluten-Free Diet Learn how to read labels and avoid hidden sources of gluten. Find safe gluten-free alternatives for your favorite foods. Prepare meals at home to avoid cross-contamination. Educate yourself about celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. Join supportive communities that understand your journey. Ready to Thrive? Celiac Disease 101: Signs, Testing, and What to Do Next Could Gluten Be Making You Sick? Here's What You Need to Know About Celiac Disease Are you struggling with digestive issues, fatigue, or brain fog but don't know why? You might have celiac disease, a condition that affects 1 in 100 people worldwide—but shockingly, most people remain undiagnosed. If gluten is harming your health, it's time to take action. In this post, we'll cover: ✅ What celiac disease is and how it affects the body ✅ Common symptoms (including the hidden ones most doctors miss!) ✅ How to get tested for celiac disease ✅ The first steps to take if you're diagnosed Let's dive in! What Is Celiac Disease? Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder, not just a food allergy. When someone with celiac disease eats gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye), their immune system attacks the small intestine, causing inflammation and damage to the villi—tiny structures responsible for nutrient absorption. Over time, this leads to nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, and serious long-term health problems. Unlike gluten sensitivity, which causes discomfort without damaging the intestine, celiac disease is permanent and requires strict, lifelong avoidance of gluten. Common Symptoms of Celiac Disease Celiac disease doesn't look the same for everyone. Some people experience classic digestive symptoms, while others have silent celiac disease, meaning they have no obvious stomach issues but still suffer from long-term damage. Here are some key symptoms to watch for:
