These systems, often referred to as cyber-physical systems, blend physical infrastructure, such as power grids, with advanced control and automation technologies. Historically, this integration has roots in SCADA systems, which were among the first examples of distributed computing, and remains crucial for ensuring resilience and operational efficiency in today's energy networks. The Historical Foundations of Electrical Systems: The episode highlights key moments in the evolution of electrical infrastructure, from the early debates between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) to the development of distributed control in power systems. Ziegler discusses how early technological decisions and innovations shaped the global grid, setting the stage for the modern challenges of integrating renewable energy and decentralized energy systems. The Promise and Challenges of Nuclear Energy: Ziegler provides a balanced perspective on nuclear power, acknowledging its potential as a low-carbon energy source but highlighting challenges such as high costs, public fear, and the complexities of large-scale projects. He notes the emerging interest in modular reactors, which aim to reduce costs and improve scalability, but stresses that their real-world impact is still to be proven. The Role of Renewable Energy and Storage: A major focus is on the rapid advancements in renewable energy, particularly solar power, and the associated need for effective storage solutions. Ziegler explains the dramatic drop in costs for lithium-ion batteries, making short-term energy storage more viable. However, he underscores the ongoing challenge of developing affordable long-term and seasonal storage technologies to support a 100% renewable energy system.Data Centers as Emerging Energy Consumers: The growing demand for electricity from data centers, especially those supporting AI technologies, is a significant trend discussed in the episode. Ziegler points out that data centers could consume up to 8-9% of total electricity in regions like Europe and the U.S. by 2030, driven by the energy-intensive nature of AI computations. This shift necessitates innovative approaches to grid connectivity and efficiency.Decentralization vs. Centralization in Grid Design: The debate over centralized versus decentralized energy systems is a recurring theme. Ziegler explains how historical constraints on communication bandwidth led to resilient, distributed architectures in power grids. He advocates for hybrid systems that balance centralized control with localized decision-making, drawing inspiration from biological systems like the human body for their adaptability and resilience. The Global Energy Transition and Geopolitical Risks: The episode explores the geopolitical dimensions of the energy transition, including dependencies on materials like lithium and solar panel production concentrated in regions like China. Ziegler argues that while local renewable energy generation reduces reliance on external energy sources, the global supply chain for components remains a vulnerability. He also emphasizes the need for greater resilience and strategic planning to navigate potential disruptions.

In this episode I return to my regular interview format as I talk with Slovak national Martin Salamon from the company, ejoin, about the improvements required in the infrastruture for a country wishing to significantly increase the use of electric vehicles. ejoin is a Slovak manufacturer of charging stations for electric vehicles, charging stations, chargers, and electromobility. The ejoin website is available at: https://ejoin.eu/ Martin and I discuss the benefits of electric vehicles versus diesel vehicles (such as my 19-year-old Landrover), not just in terms of environmental sustainability, but also in terms of the running costs of keeping a vehicle on the road over time. We talk about some of the safety concerns that have been expressed about electric vehicles, particularly the fact that some people are worried that batteries in such vehicles can sometimes catch fire. On a technical level, Martin references AC and DC charging stations for electric vehicles and these refer to AC (Alternating Current - which is generally slower) and Direct Current (which is considerably faster) when charging a vehicle. We also discuss the economics of owning an electric vehicle versus a petrol or diesel alternative, where many factors have to be taken into account, not just the initial cost of purchasing the vehicle itself. If you wish to contact Martin directly to discuss the challenges faced with building the capacity of electric vehicle charging stations in Slovakia, in particular, please follow him on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mar-sal/ Spotify and other podcast platforms have the facility to follow a word by word transcript of the podcast, available via a tab next to the 'Description' tab on laptops or desktops, or at the bottom of the podcast description on mobiles and possibly tablets, headed, 'Episode Transcript'. Bolis Ibrahim is the president of Cence Power, a start-up that aims to stop energy waste when AC power is converted to DC. The power coming into your house or office is AC, or alternating current. However, the vast majority of the devices and lights you use are DC, or direct current. Currently (har har), each individual device does its own AC/DC conversion, and if you've ever felt a hot laptop charger, you'll have witnessed power going to waste. Cence can save buildings up to 40% on their energy consumption for lighting and HVAC systems, which adds up when you consider how many commercial buildings there are in the world! ➡️ https://www.cencepower.com/ ➡️ Highlights: https://rosspalmer.com/bolis-ibrahim ➡️ Follow me on Instagram: @therosspalmer ➡️ Subscribe on YouTube: @therosspalmer

CIHT - blacklight power Fact: 1. Catalyzed hydrino transition is an electrochemical cell producing power by the reaction of hydrogen to form hydrinos. 2. The production of hydrinos results in direct electricity. 3. BlackLight process has four principle applications to motivate power: ciht, charging batteries, electrolysis to charge batteries, heat converted to electricity to charge batteries, and hybrid electric system. 4. Water has 55 moles/liter. Hydrogen to hydrino releases 50 MJ/Mole H2. One liter of water would produce 2.75 billion joules of energy. 5. A Prius consumes 9 x 10^5 J/Mile. The prius could travel 3000 miles, but most fuel cells are 50% efficient, reducing the range to 1500 miles. The onboard electrolysis unit providing the hydrogen would use 1% of the electrical output. 6. A 200 liter cell could deliver 200 kW or 267 HP and weight 200 kg that is half the weight of an internal combustion engine. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/david-nishimoto/message

Master Trainer and Rehab Specialist Jean-Paul Francouer of Little Rock, Arkansas knew from his extensive career that it often wasn't just the structural components, or hardware, of the body that were responsible for compensatory movement patterns and pain, but the nervous system, or software, that needed training. As he shares in this episode of The Undercurrent Podcast, that belief led him to electrical stimulation therapies and specifically direct current. Once he integrated the Neubie into his practice, not only was he able to retain clients for longer by moving them from rehab into fitness training, but he grew so busy that he hired someone to take on his burgeoning client load.
Gabe Arnold joins us from the Pacific Northwest National Labs after his recent work in DC lighting and PoE systems. But before we can that get to that we had to bring up his past at the DesignLights Consortium in the early days of the qualified products list, he explains why utilities needed the DLC’s help, where lighting dorks missed out on their rationale and some hindsight about the rush for high lumens for few watts. But when it comes to DC power, it’s not going to replace the grid, but as we add more solar panels and energy storage it will become more common to see some systems on run on Direct Current just to avoid adding more inverters than we need. We suspect this will really take off once LiFi gets added to the ix as well, but even Gabe, tech prophet that is, won’t guarantee that one.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.08.329912v1?rss=1 Authors: Lahogue, C., Pinault, D. Abstract: During the prodromal phase of schizophrenia with its complex and insidious clinical picture, electroencephalographic recordings detect widespread oscillation disturbances (or oscillopathies). Neural oscillations are electro-biomarkers of the connectivity state within systems. A single systemic administration of ketamine, a non-competitive NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist, transiently reproduces the oscillopathies with a clinical picture reminiscent of the psychosis prodrome. This acute pharmacological model may help the research and development of innovative treatments against the psychotic transition. Transcranial electrical stimulation is recognized as an appropriate non-invasive therapeutic modality since it can increase cognitive performance and modulate neural oscillations with little or no side effects. Therefore, our objective was to set up, in the sedated adult rat, a stimulation method able to normalize the ketamine-induced oscillopathies. He put his engineering and neuroscience background to use to create an electrical stimulation method called NeuFit®. It’s based on neuromuscular re-education of the nervous system and specifically designed for injury rehabilitation, pain reduction, and improved body performance. I actually demonstrate how the technology works during the show. I break a sweat using his Neubie® device – and even yelp a few times – but it’s all worth it.(Note to Listeners: This episode was recorded at 40 Years of Zen before the coronavirus pandemic travel restrictions and shutdowns.) This is a unique type of direct electrical current, Garrett says. “As opposed to traditional electrical stimulation, which is typically alternating current and causes muscles only to contract, this actually can allow us to preferentially reprogram muscles so that they lengthen, so they're more relaxed, more pliable and more resilient, and that allows us to move through greater ranges of motion. It opens up the pathways physically for the body to actually send the blood and raw materials and resources to help you heal, and it optimizes function in a way that just improves the overall recovery process.”Science, research and functional neurology provide the backbone for NeuFit®. Garrett evolved his unique electrical stimulation protocols over the past decade and now helps athletes of all levels, as well as people recovering from spinal cord injury, stroke, and MS.He and his team work directly with MLB, NHL, NBA, and NFL teams; major NCAA universities; hospital systems; physical therapy and chiropractic clinics; and fitness facilities. Listen on to find out how to recover faster from injuries, reverse chronic pain, and experience big improvements in fitness and performance.Enjoy the show! Today’s episode features sports performance coach Matt Cooper. Matt is a young performance coach on the cutting edge of the field, with influences from the worlds of Jay Schroeder, Marv Marinovich, Nick Curson, Garrett Salpeter, and Soviet sport science. He also has a holistic knowledge of the brain, nervous system, psychology and nutrition, and has a view of working with athletes in a manner that trains the “whole athlete”. I first heard Matt on “The Bledsoe Show” and as soon as Matt started to reference the neurological approach to training that he uses, I realized that we must have a lot in common. Unbeknownst to me at the time of my listening, Matt was hosting a seminar in southern California with podcast guest, mentor and good friend of mine, Adarian Barr. With all this in mind, my conversation with Matt has been a long time coming. When we look at the future of training, we need to look further than simply muscles and the weight on the bar, and Matt’s work is the epitome of looking beyond those things, into the nervous system, and into the brain and mind of an athlete. In this podcast with Matt, we talk quite a bit on his training influences, and how the work of Jay Schroeder (Evo-Sport) Garrett Salpeter (Neufit) and Nick Curson and Marv Marinovich (Pro-Bod-X) works from a neurological perspective, and how we can shape our own training with their concepts in mind. Knowing the nervous system, and how it processes training is a key to continual improvement, and this is yet another installment in the Just Fly Performance Podcast universe that helps us to understand this amazing system, and its impact on training, just a little bit better. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Matt’s background and influences How Matt is using ideals from Marv Marinovich and Jay Schoeder/Inno-Sport/Evo-Sport in his own training means The neurological pitfalls of a max barbell strength directed mentality Direct-Current neurological training and how we can understand the body from this perspective The evolution of barbell work in Matt’s system over the years Pro-Bod-X work and it’s role in Matt’s programming How a typical workout may shake out in Matt’s programming Matt Cooper Quotes “When you go too far down that maximal strength pipeline, you often will create governors and limiters on your brain, where for survival’s sake, to protect your joints the brain will rewire the way you contract the muscle” “(Marinovich) would look at training more in terms of a tendon adaptation; you need to make sure you are training the tendon to store and release kinetic energy, and that’s something you can only train at the speed of sport” “The deep squat position is one of the positions that is going to produce the most co-contractions and limiters on the body from a survival perspective” “Someone can eat to express their nervous system” “With the (Marv Marinovich) ball work, you are training your body to activate muscles in synergy” “The ball work is more in the pre-hab and warmup, and some oscillation of it is going to be in the beginning of most workouts” About Matt Cooper Matt Cooper (Coop) is a nutrition consultant, strength & conditioning coach, and human performance coach from California. Driven by an obsession to expand human performance, Coop spends his time researching, experimenting, doing nerdy things, and building better humans in general at Stand Out Performance (Fast Twitch LA) in Compton, California. Coop works with athletes and individuals-from developmental to professional levels-remotely and in-person to optimize their health, performance, and fitness. Presenting only one side--it does not matter which one one--to further an agenda is wrong and qualifies people as truth-twisters. A term we used in the last podcast, Profiling. Let’s jump right into the deep end of this pool by bringing up Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King, born in Atlanta in 1929, is a genuine American hero. In 1964, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. And he helped to reshape how we think about and deal with race in our country, with worldwide reverberations. And he was a known plagiarist and a serial adulterer. That makes him human, and still very much a man well worth remembering and celebrating. Thomas Edison, born in 1847, is known as the inventor of the light bulb. He also invented the phonograph and the motion picture along the way to being granted 1,093 patents. He founded one of America’s most successful companies, General Electric--GE. He was also a proponent of Direct Current, DC, as opposed to Alternating Current, AC. He fought vigorously, and often unfairly, to promote DC over AC. Had he won, the electric grid that in so many ways helped to build and supports the US would have been greatly delayed. And, yes, this flawed human deserves to be greatly honored for his many vital contributions. Golda Meir, born in 1898, was the fourth prime minister of Israel. On her way to earning the unofficial title of “Iron Lady” well before Margaret Thatcher, the founding Israeli prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, called her “the best man in government.” She rallied her country after the horrific murders of Israeli athletes by appealing to the world to “save our citizens and condemn the unspeakable criminal acts committed.” She also had to resign after the crucial 1973 Yom Kippur War; her coun...
Nikola Tesla. The prototypical "mad scientist". He slept only a few hours a night and devoted his life to science like none-other. A rags-to-riches-to-rags visionary who was a giant in the field of scientific invention, he created the first alternating current (AC) motor and was a pioneer in the field of wireless information transmission. He helped build the world’s first large-scale hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls. He even pushed scientific rival Thomas Edison into electrocuting pets to prove that his direct current technology was better and safer than Tesla’s alternating current. It was a AC versus DC, War of Currents nerd fight that lasted over a decade. He was also a strange man who fell in love with a pigeon and once claimed to have created a "death ray". Nuclear energy gets a bad rap on "The Simpsons," but there's a lot more to the story. In this episode of Direct Current, we separate fact from fiction and and explore how splitting atoms could play a big role in America's clean energy future.
This episode of Direct Current is dedicated to the makers at the Energy Department — the engineers, researchers and artisans whose creations are pushing science and technology to exciting new places.
Neural Implant podcast - the people behind Brain-Machine Interface revolutions
At the 2018 Neural Interface Conference the first person I talked to during the poster session was Gene Fridman of Johns Hopkins who was presenting on the ability to block small nerves using direct current. Since they used ions there were no disadvantages compared to if they used metal electrodes
You know Rick Perry as the current Secretary of Energy and former Texas governor, but did you know he once played drums with ZZ Top? On the Direct Current season 3 premiere, hear from Perry on everything from supercomputers to "Dancing with the Stars."
From the real science behind the Upside Down in Netflix's "Stranger Things" to the mysterious death of a U.S. president, Direct Current is pulling back the curtain on some of our deepest, darkest #EnergySecrets.
And now, for something completely different… Take a drive with Direct Current as we mash up three slightly off-kilter energy stories. It might get weird, but it won’t be boring. It’s Hyper Drive Time!
The Department of Energy’s National Labs are the crown jewels of science in America. But their work is so diverse that it’s hard to cover all 17 of them in one podcast episode. So naturally, Direct Current took on that challenge.
Direct Current returns next week! LISTEN TO OUR NEW TRAILER to get a little taste of what's in store for season 2. We also want to say a quick thank you to everyone who listened to the first season; we really appreciate your support and your enthusiasm.

Do you know where the nearest power plant is?
DARPA is using tDCS to train soldiers to identify threats in satellite images, but there are many other uses, but thats just developed a way to enhance soldiers' while they're taught new skills. This technology isn't hard to find or harness.
Foundations of Amateur Radio When you use your trusty multi-meter to measure resistance across a 50 Ohm resistor, it shows 50 Ohm, but when you use it across a piece of 50 Ohm coax, you see either infinity, or 0. Similarly, when you measure across a folded-dipole, you see 0, not 300 Ohm. Does this mean that a 50 Ohm resistor is somehow different than a 50 Ohm piece of coax and why is the feed-point impedance of a folded dipole 300 Ohm, when your multi-meter clearly says it's 0? Does this mean that there are two types of Ohm? Today I'm going to explain why this is and what's going on. Yesterday I started reading up on the subject and every single explanation I came across went into deep ju-ju with scary maths, using complex and imaginary numbers. I did a bit of that in my dark past, but none of that is needed to understand what's happening. As you know, there is such a thing as Direct Current or DC - we use it with batteries and little power supplies, in simple circuits and all manner of day-to-day activities. There is another world that we as amateurs use, the world of Alternating Current or AC. In house-hold wiring we use 50 or 60 Hertz and different voltages depending on where on the globe we are. In radio terms we use it for our transmissions, on HF at several Mega Hertz and beyond. These two different worlds, the DC and AC world don't appear to have anything in common. Here's the kicker though, they are the same thing. Yup. DC and AC are the same thing. What? Yup. I'm not making this up. As you might recall, if you look at an AC voltage, it goes from plus to minus and back again. A 50 Hertz alternating current does this swap 50 times per second. When you're rag-chewing on 40m, or 7 MHz, it happens 7 million times a second. From plus to minus and back, 7 million times. Clearly there has to be some impact on this massive level of activity. Think of direct current as an alternating current with a frequency of 0 Hertz, that is, over time, DC doesn't change. So, DC is a short cut for saying AC at 0 Hertz. If you understand that explanation, then some really cool stuff starts to happen. Before I get to the cool stuff, you might recall Ohm's Law, commonly expressed as: "Given a current and a resistance, we can determine a voltage". Said in another way, the resistance of a circuit is related to the voltage and the current in the circuit. Now, in this simple form of Ohm's Law, the voltage doesn't change from plus to minus and back again. That is, over time, there is no change. Now if you start doing funky stuff with your voltage, like change it from plus to minus and back again, an additional type of resistance comes into play, called reactance. This reactance is the part that is affected by voltage change over time. So if you swap the voltage from plus to minus and back again a million times a second, the reactance has a big part to play. In short, there are two types of resistance, one that is independent of time, called resistance, and one that's dependent on time, called reactance. Both of these, resistance and reactance, happen within a circuit. If the voltage doesn't change over time, then the reactance part is zero and similarly there are circumstances where you can have a resistance of zero but have a reactance that's not - one example is a folded dipole. Now, if you combine the resistance and reactance, you get something called impedance. Now you have all the bits. Resistance is expressed in Ohm, Impedance is expressed in Ohm, and thus Reactance is also expressed in Ohm. If we look at our folded dipole with a feed-point impedance of 300 Ohm, you now know that this 300 Ohm comes from a resistance of 0 Ohm and a reactance of 300 Ohm at the resonant frequency, which is why your trusty multi-meter shows it as 0, since the voltage it uses to measure is alternating at 0 Hertz, which is not the resonant frequency of this antenna. Before I go, the rabbit hole goes deeper. Reactance itself is made up of Capacitance and Inductance, which each deal with the reactance in a capacitor and an inductor, but I'll leave that for another day. So, next time someone tells you that the feed-point impedance of your folded dipole is 300 Ohm, you'll now understand why your multi-meter says it's 0. I'm Onno VK6FLAB.
A word of thanks, and a sneak preview of what’s coming up on future episodes of Direct Current.
We investigate the sneaky "soft costs" driving up the price of rooftop solar, delve into the archives for a look at the turbulent times around the Energy Department's creation, and contemplate some alternatives to the name "Direct Current."
Time to Geek Out on Direct Current! Carl and Richard talk about the recent wave of discussion about DC in the home. Blame USB for part of it - everyone is using USB to charge devices now, and USB was never meant to do that... but in 2014, the new USB Power Delivery standard will be implemented to make it more effective. Richard digs into his experiences switching over to LED lighting in his house, and the craziness around converting from AC to DC at every LED light. So what about distributed LED lighting in the house? It opens the door to many more DC based solutions!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/net-rocks/donations

What use is an F-call? From DC to Daylight is a term that until I became an Amateur, I'd never heard of and since becoming licensed I've bumped into it more than a couple of times. Once you sit and think about it, the notion, from DC to Daylight makes perfect sense, but what does it mean? I'll start off with that I'm not talking about Cheap Therapy for your Inner Problem Child - the Rock band based in San Jose, California. So, DC, or Direct Current, as opposed to AC, or Alternating Current does not change frequency, that is, the positive and negative poles never swap over, so the frequency that they switch at is 0Hz or zero times per second. If you reverse the poles, the frequency at which you do that, say flick a switch once every second, the frequency is 1Hz. AC does it 50 or 60 times per second, or 50 or 60 Hz. As you keep increasing the frequency, you'll come past 160m, just below 2MHz, 80m around 7MHz, etc, onto 2m around 145MHz, 70cm and up to WiFi at 2.4GHz, then 5.8GHz, eventually, you'll get to a frequency of around 400 THz, where you'll bump into visible light where the wavelength is 750nm. So, DC is 0Hz, Daylight is 400 THz, so from DC to Daylight means from 0 Hz to 400 THz. Said in another way, DC to Daylight means "all frequencies". Of course, you could point out that there are frequencies above daylight, indeed there are. It's really a short hand term and as amateur radio terms go, it's one of the more explanatory ones. Now all you need is a DC to Daylight radio, and you'll be able to listen to everything that goes on anywhere - provided you have an appropriately tuned antenna - Hi Hi. I'm sure there are terms you've come across that make no sense. Have a look around, or better still, contact another Amateur and work it out together. The only silly question is the one you didn't ask. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Another thoroughly enjoyable show with four beautiful women in our studios in Nunhead Heights (actually Borough, London - it's all SE!). Nunhead American Robin Schacht is originally from Washington, DC, as in Direct Current, which is ironic, because Washington is the home of Politics and nothing is ever 'direct' in Politics. She chatted with us about her recent trip representing Nunhead the African country of Uganda. How exotic it all sounded but I wasn't moved to want to leave my Nunhead. She was joined by the very exciting Jo Romero, who is a friend for life because of her open and out-going personality, so very American. She relayed details of her trip to New York City, a city, which she said she didn't like at ALL, which surprised Co-Host Lisa Moyle and me. The truth be told, she rented a room in Washington Heights, not at all similar to Washington, DC. It would be like making a visit to South London and not staying in Nunhead! Lisa gave a report on Tara Smith having her baby and moving back to the Upper East Side, which is one place that Jo might have stayed, and then we had a lively chat about how the British do not like to be touched. All very funny! Chris Dixon was suffering from vocal illness so Leanne Bower sound-boarded us again, and added quite nicely to the program. A lovely show! ENJOY!
