In this eye-opening conversation, we sit down with Simone Stolzoff, author of The Good Enough Job, to explore why modern work culture traps so many of us in cycles of burnout, identity crises, and unrealistic ambition. Drawing on research and personal experience, Simone challenges the “dream job” myth and offers a liberating framework: redefine success on your terms. We explore the dangers of workism, the importance of building an identity outside of your career, and the power of setting clear boundaries. For high-achievers who feel stuck on the hedonic treadmill, this episode offers a roadmap to a more balanced, meaningful life — without abandoning your ambition. [00:00:00] Introduction [00:02:26] The real meaning of a “good enough job” — and why it's not about slacking off [00:08:16] The rise of workism: why your job became your identity [00:13:33] The difference between boundaries and guardrails — and why we need both [00:21:14] The myth of the dream job (and why passion usually follows skill, not the other way around) [00:27:41] How to rebuild an identity outside of work and escape workaholism [00:39:28] The surprising reason people at both ends of the ambition spectrum struggle [00:50:00] Why defining your “enough” number is the antidote to endless striving [00:56:08] Simone's personal lesson: why time autonomy is his ultimate luxury Episode Takeaways: Your job should support your life, not become your life. Stop chasing perfection — a “good enough” job can free you to thrive in other areas that matter. Identity is like an investment portfolio: diversify it beyond just work. Intrinsic motivation (mastery, purpose, autonomy) beats external markers of success. Define your personal “enough” — financially, emotionally, and professionally — or risk falling into the endless “more” trap. Play, beginner's mindset, and non-work communities are secret weapons for resilience. Tired of awkward handshakes and collecting business cards without building real connections? The Word Before Work
What C.S. Lewis said after landing his dream job

The Word Before Work

Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Five Mere ChristiansDevotional: 5 of 5[Jesus said,] remain in my love...I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. (John 15:9, 11)The search for joy was the dominant theme of C.S. Lewis's life. And he sought it apart from Christ in all the usual (and some unusual) places: alcohol abuse, an alleged affair with his dead best friend's mom, and perhaps most relatably his career. In 1925, after years of professional disappointments, Lewis landed his dream job as Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Magdalen College in Oxford. In an induction ceremony that had all the pomp and circumstance a 467-year-old college can muster, Lewis knelt before the president of Magdalen College, who dramatically met his gaze and declared, “I wish you joy.” Lewis then rose and proceeded around the room, stopping in front of each new colleague who echoed the refrain: “I wish you joy,” “I wish you joy,” “I wish you joy.”I guarantee you that in that moment, C.S. Lewis believed he had finally found joy in the ultimate. He had achieved his vocational dream! But by God's grace, Lewis came to learn what every successful professional inevitably does: that without Christ, even a dream job will eventually turn into a nightmare. It is only by remaining in Christ's love that “your joy may be complete” (see John 15:11). Here's how Lewis himself said it years later: “God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.”Is it wrong to find joy in our work? Absolutely not! God created us to love our jobs (see Genesis 1:26-28 and Ecclesiastes 2:24). But Lewis's story and today's passage remind us that we mere Christians glorify God by finding our ultimate joy in Christ and not our work.Is your mood perfectly correlated to whether you're winning at work? Do you spend less time with the Lord when things aren't going your way? Are you unable to enjoy God's gift of rest from your work? Take it from someone with loads of experience in this area: If you answered yes to any of those questions, you're probably looking to your work to provide you with the ultimate joy that can be found only in Christ. If that's you, let me encourage you to do three things right now: Confess your idolatry to God and other believers Meditate on the gospel Ask the Lord for his power to enjoy the good gift of work without turning it into an idolatrous ultimate goodIn doing this, you will be glorifying God as you work today!

This week Karen is joined by Artisan Perfumery Mastermind alumni Gabrielle Durand, the founder of natural fragrance brand ‘On the Nose’ perfumes. After a long career in the corporate world of HR, Gabrielle decided to take a leap of faith and follow her lifelong dream of being a perfumer. Changing your career late in life can be a very daunting prospect, but Gabrielle was determined to succeed. In this inspirational interview with Karen, Gabrielle takes us, step by step, on her journey from day job to dream job. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gabrielle had a long and successful career in HR, however the bug to be a perfumer was one that hadn’t left her since childhood. She recounts to Karen how a chance encounter with online learning led her into her dream career at the tender age of 50. Gabrielle started making perfumes as a test. Confident that she could make it into a business, it wasn’t until her friend and family started asking for refills that she realised other people were taking it seriously too. She explains to Karen how this spurred her on to take the leap into full time perfumery. The lessons Gabrielle learned in the corporate world served her well when she launched her new perfume business. She details how she used her learnings to make sure her brand was ready to launch and how it allowed her to communicate her style and vision effectively. A lot of people carry around the misconception that it’s too late to try something new. Gabrielle, who came to perfumery in her 50’s, explains to listeners why it’s never too late to make a change. BEST MOMENTS “It's not just about getting your product to a customer, it’s about making that experience valuable and memorable.” “In a year, you’re going to be a year older and you’re still going to be questioning if you should make a change. So do it now.” “It’s not just about getting the perfume right, it’s also about getting the packaging and design right. When Your Dream Job Becomes a Nightmare - What April Christina Curley Learned From Being Let Go

In 2014, former teacher turned recruiter, April Christina Curley, got offered her dream job - a major tech company asked her to come on board specifically to create a talent pipeline for overlooked tech talent at historically black colleges and universities. Without hesitation, April said yes, packed up her things, and moved from Baltimore to NY. At first, things were great - the program April helped create was a success. She was driving real change and making a real difference. But it didn't last. Despite its good intentions, April saw policies and practices within the company itself that were rooted in historic biases.  And when she spoke out, she was increasingly chastised by management for being “angry, insubordinate, uncooperative, unwelcoming” and more. This despite the fact that her work was objectively successful and her peers had no problem with her. By 2020 April's dream job had become a nightmare.  And then, just like that, she was let go. In this episode, April opens up to Brenda about what it's like when you speak truth to power at the office and months later find yourself out of a job. You'll also find out how to pick yourself back up after you've lost what was supposed to be the perfect opportunity. For more on April and her work check out...
