Around the Salton Sea, dust storms have become an increasing problem, sparking dozens of public health studies. But many Imperial Valley residents have grown weary of repeated studies that all basically say the same thing: that the air quality is bad and getting worse. Reporter: Kori Suzuki, KPBS National Parks are once again caught up in the middle of the federal government shutdown. During the last shutdown – for more than 30 days in 2018 and 2019 - parks that remained open were unstaffed, leading to widespread vandalism and environmental damage. Denny Hamlin drives for Joe Gibbs Racing. He's also the co-owner of 23XI Racing, which has Bubba Wallace efforting to stay alive in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. So, when Hamlin bumped Wallace into the wall toward the end of Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400, that was going to get folks' attention, including Wallace's. The word “dumbass” may have entered the chat, for instance. Wallace is, right now, on the outside looking in, with one race left in the Round of 12, which becomes the Round of 8 after this weekend's Charlotte ROVAL. Rod Mullins will be down in Charlotte covering the race for AFP. I chatted with Rod on today's podcast to get into this Denny Hamlin-Bubba Wallace story, among other things, including the rumors that NASCAR is going to shutter its current playoff format to go back to the way things were down pre-2004. Matt Kenseth comes up as we talk through that one. Also, discussion of declining NASCAR ratings, and how politics is playing a role in that.

Most of us think of tea as a comfort drink. Who doesn't love sitting down with your favourite cuppa and watching tv, or something to wind down with before bed. But what if your tea was doing more than that? What if it could actually calm your nervous system, support your hormones, ease anxiety, or even improve the quality of your sleep? In today's episode, I'm sitting down with Nina Morgan, a women's health advocate and founder of Nutur Tea to chat all about what's really hiding inside those supermarket tea bags, how to spot low quality matcha from the real thing, and the specific herbs that can make a difference to stress, gut health, and menopause. Hi, Sleepy. Tonight I'm the hat that won't come off and the sigh that finally settles. We wander from my daughter's Friday-breath of relief to a prairie of 900 million cows, a horse named Barbara who can sing the herd into neat little lines, and the dizzy kindness of work—the kind that bends backs and hearts and still asks for more. We listen for sand that sings, tip our hat to saints with thorny ideas, and let the town called Rest appear just when the dust tastes like old starlight between our teeth. It's an improvisational, introspective little journey to sleep where nothing has to be solved and everything gets to breathe. Let my voice do the walking while you drift off to sleep, unbuttoning the day one quiet image at a time. It is what it is. What happens, happens. And right now, there's nothing we need to do except close our eyes and ride. https://jo.my/le58ll Respiratory Protection & Airborne Hazards: Keep It Clean, Keep It Safe Let's talk about something you don't see—but definitely feel. Airborne hazards. Dust. Fumes. Mists. Vapors. The stuff that hangs in the air and messes with your lungs if you're not protected. That's where your respirator comes in. But a respirator's only as good as the condition it's in. Week 4 is all about Cleaning, Storage, and Responsibility when it comes to respiratory protection. We're not just throwing on a mask and calling it good. You've got to take care of your gear if you want it to take care of you. Here are a few things to lock in when dealing with respirators on the floor: 1. Clean it after each use. Sweat, dust, oils—your respirator collects a lot during the day. Always clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use mild soap and warm water. Skip the harsh chemicals. They'll damage the material and reduce protection. 2. Store it the right way. Don't toss it in your locker or throw it on a dusty shelf—store respirators in a sealed container or bag. Keep them dry, away from direct sunlight, chemicals, or anything that might cause contamination or damage. 3. Replace filters regularly. You'll know when it's time. Breathing starts to feel harder, or you're catching more odors than usual. Don't wait until you're gasping—swap filters out based on the schedule your facility recommends, or sooner if needed. 4. Check your gear—every time. Before each use, do a quick check. Look for cracks, dry rot, worn straps, or missing valves. If something feels off—it probably is. Please don't use it. 5. Take foul gear out of the game. If a respirator is damaged, expired, or in any way—tag it, report it, and remove it from service. No exceptions. As always, these are potential tips. Please be sure to follow the rules and regulations of your specific facility. Respiratory protection isn't just about what you wear—it's how you care for it. A clean, well-maintained respirator means you're getting the whole level of protection every time you put it on. It means fewer health risks and more time getting the job done right. A strong Safety Culture depends on personal responsibility. That means keeping your gear clean, storing it safely, and replacing it when needed. And knowing that your health depends on the steps you take before your shift even starts. Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. Until we meet next time – have a great week, and STAY SAFE! #Safety #SafetyCulture #RespiratoryProtection #PPE #AirborneHazards #SafetyFirst #CleanYourGear

Over the weekend, WRIF hosted our annual Riff Fest at Pine Knob. I interviewed the three main stage bands before the show that night. Up first, it's Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin. Ben's fun to talk with. We discussed his influences, yacht rock, new BB music, his home studio, and more. Matt and Adam from Three Days Grace are next. It's the first time I've had the chance to speak with both singers. We talked about the new album, hockey, and that's just for starters. Finally, it's the band Return To Dust. If you're a fan of the grunge music of the 90s, this band is for you. Their set killed! The guys told me how the band started, with two of the guys hailing from Texas and two from Southern California. Keep an eye on these guys in the future. Dust is a big problem for Moon and Mars. It sticks to everything, breaks things, covers solar panels. So, how do you solve this problem? One possible solution is an electric shield that uses charged surfaces to repel the dust.
Dr Brian Walker has practised medicine for many years in many different countries, before finally settling into practice as a GP in Serpentine Medical Centre. He has front-line experience treating patients in hospitals, emergency departments and general practice. If you are familiar with the book Dying to be Be, which detailed the near death expeirence by Anita Moorjani, it should be noted that Dr Walker was Anita's GP in Hong Kong. She met up with him in the United States a few years ago and did a beautiful interview which is available on Youtube. Dr Walker is also a member of the Legislative Council in the Parliament of Western Australia for the Legalise Cannabis Party. Every year, the monastic community (Monks and nuns) go on a three month retreat called the “Rains Retreat” from mid July to mid October. During this period, they do not visit our centres for teachings as it's a time for deepening their own practice. While the monks and nuns are away, we will have some interesting guest speakers coming in to give the Friday Night talk. This week, we are back in Genesis 2 and exploring what it means to be dust & breath, and how we were created for community.
Ezekiel's prophecy against Tyre stands as one of the most remarkable and precise predictions in biblical literature – a stunning demonstration of divine foreknowledge that unfolded over centuries exactly as foretold. The ancient city-state of Tyre was no ordinary settlement. By Ezekiel's time, this 2,000-year-old Mediterranean powerhouse had accumulated wealth beyond imagination. With a monopoly on precious purple dye and control over eastern Mediterranean shipping routes, Tyre had established colonies throughout the region and conducted business with kings worldwide. Their ships featured embroidered linen sails, ivory inlays, and the finest imported woods. Zechariah described their prosperity in striking terms: silver "heaped up like dust" and gold like "mire in the streets" – an observation confirmed by gold flecks that remained in Tyre's beach sand into modern times.Against this backdrop of seemingly invincible prosperity, Ezekiel delivered God's judgment: wave after wave of nations would attack Tyre, ultimately reducing this mighty commercial empire to nothing more than "a bare rock" where fishermen would spread their nets. The prophecy detailed that Nebuchadnezzar would come first, followed by others who would cast Tyre's stones, timber and debris into the sea.History records the astonishing fulfillment of these predictions. Nebuchadnezzar besieged Tyre for thirteen years, conquering the mainland but unable to take the island fortress. Later, Alexander the Great accomplished what Babylon couldn't by building a causeway to the island using mainland rubble – literally fulfilling the prophecy about casting materials into the sea. By the time of the New Testament, this once-wealthy nation was begging for food supplies, and 17th-century European explorers found nothing but ruins inhabited by about fifty poor families who survived mainly by fishing.Skeptics attempt to discredit this prophecy, but careful examination reveals its precise fulfillment. The story of Tyre reminds us that God deals with nations as well as individuals, and His word proves trustworthy across millennia. What world powers today might be risking divine judgment through their actions? How might God's patience be working in our own time?Support the showThank you for listening!! Dust to Dust, Weirdos! Welcome back to KEEP IT WEIRD!! The podcast for all things strange, unusual, paranormal, supernatural, creepy, gross, scary, sticky and everything in between! Everytime we get together we chat about something WEIRD and this episode is no exception. WE'RE BACK from a brief hiatus so dont mind us as we spend the first fifteen or so catching you up on life stuff but dont you worry we make our way to the strange quickly as Lauren brings us into a WHERE IN THE WORLD (is Keep It Weird Going?) and we travel (astrally) to NORWAY! Ålen, Norway to be exact in a 15 mile valley known as Hessdalen where for almost an entire century very strange lights have been appearing in the sky. No matter the weather, regardless of day or night these lights show up in bright whites, yellows and reds - sometimes for over an hour! Sometimes they streak through the sky, other times they sway slowly back and forth. But what the h e double hockey sticks are they?! UFOs?! Plasma? Ball lightning? A natural phenomenon we literally don't know about yet?! We break down the scientific discoveries that we DO know along with all the questions we still have about the HESSDALEN LIGHTS. Then Ashley takes a different look at the sky in an ITS THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT! Something is headed our way and its massive. 3i/Atlas is the third interstellar object (that we have ever observed) to pass through our solar system and it's en route as we speak! Most experts believe it's a comet, although some are more skeptical of it's behavior. But that's not why we're here-- we're here to talk about what some OTHER folks believe this object to be. Something called the BLUE STAR KACHINA aka SAQUASOHUH- an apocalyptic prophecy from North America's own Hopi Native Tribes. This bright blue star is said to come from far away and crash into our skies in the "Day of Purification" and is described as a "world engulfing cataclysm" that will end life as we know it for everyone who isn't truly Hopi. The only problem is that the legend didn't actually come from Hopi legends and it was written by a white man in the 60s. OOPS!! Ah well, we'll get em' next time boys. Lauren finishes off the show with a mini segment called TIK TOKS THAT BRING ME JOY where she introduces us to three different content creators that have helped her get through the last month or so we've been away. Dust from car tires can be bad for fish — what might it do to us?As car tires wear, they shed billions of ultrafine particles of rubber that contain a complex mix of chemicals, including one called 6PPD-Quinone that's been linked to mass die-offs of migrating salmon. Now researchers are sounding the alarm that this chemical is accumulating in humans, and we have no clear understanding of its toxicity. An international team of scientists, including Rachel Scholes from the University of British Columbia, are calling for more scrutiny of the chemicals that go into car tires, since so much ends up in our environment. Their paper was published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters.Fecal Transplants seem to have lasting metabolic effectsTransplanting the gut microbiome has been held out as a hope for a range of disorders, from obesity to mental health issues. A study that followed obese adolescents four years after receiving a fecal microbiota transplant from healthy individuals has shown positive impacts on the recipients' weight and metabolic health. Dr. Wayne Cutfield, a pediatrician and professor of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, said they also found after all this time that the donor bacteria have remained established in the recipients' gut microbiome. The study is in the journal Nature Communications. An ant queen clones sexual slaves of another species for her daughtersIn a truly bizarre tale from the animal world, researchers have discovered a species of ant where the queen gives birth to males of two totally different species. Somewhere along their evolutionary path, these Messor ibericus queen ants in southern Europe developed an ability to clone male Messor structor ants for her daughters to mate with and to produce a hybrid working class. Jonathan Romiguier, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Montpellier in France, said these M. ibericus ants essentially domesticated ants of another species. The study was published in the journal Nature. Why other apes can't walk a mile in our shoesA feature that distinguishes humans from other primates is the ability to walk upright. The major evolutionary change in the structure of our pelvis that allows for our bipedalism has now been traced genetically and developmentally. Human pelvic blades initially form in the embryo like other primates, but then flip their growth from vertical to horizontal, to give the human pelvis its unique basin shape. This new research led by Terence Capellini, Chair of the human evolutionary biology department at Harvard University and postdoctoral student Gayani Senevirathne, was published in the journal Nature.Women glow. So do men. Understanding our 'inner light'You might have been told by an admirer that you have a unique glow. In two groundbreaking studies, researchers have demonstrated the reality of that poetic compliment. Using ultra-sensitive instruments capable of detecting individual photons, Canadian researchers have imaged a biological source of incredibly faint light, known as Ultraweak Photon Emissions (UPE), that has potential as a future non-invasive diagnostic imaging tool. Daniel Oblak, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Calgary, oversaw a study where they unequivocally demonstrated that living things, like mice, give off an extremely faint glow that dims when they die. His study was published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. In a separate study, Nirosha Murugan, — an assistant professor of tissue biophysics at Wilfred Laurier University — discovered that these UPEs can also detect different mental states in the brain. That study was published in the journal iScience.

James sits down once again with cosmologist Brian Keating—longtime friend of the show and author of Into the Impossible: Focus Like a Nobel Prize Winner. In this candid conversation, they challenge each other's views on focus, curiosity, and the trade-offs of staying in your lane. Brian shares behind-the-scenes lessons from interviewing Nobel Prize winners, the thinking behind his new “Keating Test” for AI, and why communication matters as much as discovery in science. This episode isn't about self-help clichés. It's about real-world insights you won't hear anywhere else—whether it's why guarding your time is the most important skill, how to use flow states to sharpen your career, or why great breakthroughs depend on questioning the work of those who came before. What You'll Learn Why Brian created the “Keating Test” as a new measure for true artificial intelligence How Nobel Prize winners balance intense focus with curiosity across disciplines Why communication skills matter as much as scientific discovery for lasting impact How to guard your time from “time bandits” and apply the power of saying “no” Practical ways to find your lane—or combine lanes—while still pursuing flow and mastery Timestamped Chapters [02:00] The Keating Test: AI, free will, and the act of survival [06:00] Humor, history, and reclaiming the “worst joke ever told” [08:00] Friendship, TEDx, and 11 years of conversations [09:00] Lessons from Nobel Prize winners: beyond self-help habits [10:00] Publishing with Scribe/Lioncrest and connections to James and David Goggins [12:00] Into the Impossible, Volume One: why distilling Nobel wisdom matters [13:00] Imposter syndrome, Alfred Nobel, and Volume Two's focus [15:00] Donna Strickland, LASIK, and the power of saying no [18:00] Stay in your lane—or widen it?
