Welcome to the sixty-seventh episode of Talk Spirit To Me.This week Jess welcomed Samantha Wills to the podcast.Samantha Wills is a bestselling author, speaker, and creative strategist, crafting stories that empower creatives across books, business, and brand. Her work includes the bestselling memoir Of Gold & Dust and the children's book Marigold's Magic Stars, with forthcoming projects in adult fiction and screenwriting. Through honest storytelling and sharp cultural insight, Samantha gives voice to the creative, emotional, and professional challenges women face in a world that constantly asks for more. At the center of her work is a creative through line——one that explores self-trust, identity, and the persistence it takes to live a creative life on your own terms.Across all her platforms, she meets women in the space between ambition and uncertainty——helping them move through self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and distraction to pursue the creative life they know they're meant for. She first became known as the founder of Samantha Wills Jewelry, a globally recognized accessories brand she launched at 21 and closed at its peak after 15 years. That experience shaped her voice as both a creative entrepreneur and modern storyteller. Today, through her writing, speaking, and the Samantha Wills Institute, she supports a new generation of creatives and founders in reclaiming their voice, trusting their intuition, and designing lives and work that feel deeply their own.If you would like to connect with Samantha you can follow her on Instagram @samanthawills or you can visit her website https://samanthawills.com/If you like this sh*t, follow us on Instagram @jessicalynnemediumship & @talkspirittomepodcast OR if you would like to book a Psychic Medium Reading you can do so HERE **Please note: we do not own the rights to this music; Wake Up - Spiring @RFM_NCM

So I've decided to share it publicly on our podcast so you can listen in, too

When I started this podcast back in 2021, the number 1 person on my dream guest wishlist was Samantha Wills. She's my creative inspiration, the reason I got into marketing and someone I've admired for well over 12 years. And today's guest on the How I Do Content Podcast is the Samantha Wills. If you're new to the world of Samantha here's what you need to know.Samantha Wills is an award-winning designer, author, speaker, and advocate for the arts. She founded one of Australia's most popular jewellery brands from her dining table at just 21 (which I was OBSESSED with), and which went on to be hailed as “Australia's biggest export since Vegemite.”Her debut book, Of Gold & Dust, became an instant bestseller, chronicling her journey with raw vulnerability and humour, revealing the realities of a creative founder behind the highlight reel of social media and public appearances. It's one of my favourite books and I recommend all female founders read it.And now Samantha has ventured into children's literature writing Marigold's Magic Stars to inspire children to recognise the importance and intelligence of their creativity. The magic of Marigold's story is that this message is equally as important for adults, especially business owners.I was lucky enough to chat with Samantha about all things creativity – including how she's used her creativity as an asset in her entrepreneurial journey and her advice if you're feeling a little creatively burnt out right now.I've never been more excited to share an episode with you – so enough from me – let's begin!Connect with Samantha WillsFollow Samantha on Instagram @samanthawillsShop Marigold's Magic Stars at https://www.briobooks.store/products/marigolds-magic-stars-first-edition-boxset Shop Of Gold & Dust at https://samanthawills.com/book Find out more at https://samanthawills.com/ Want more?Sign up for a Messaging for LEADS session at https://thesocialbolt.com.au/leads/ Download Marketing Prompts For Client Converting Content https://thesocialbolt.com.au/prompts/ Follow Tahryn on Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/thesocialbolt Find out more at https://www.thesocialbolt.com.au Background Music is Copyright Free. I loved meeting Samantha (she's ace) and this was a fun chat about talent, creativity, intelligence, self-doubt, self-belief, imposter syndrome, courage, getting out of our own way and the challenge of turning an idea in our head into an 'actual' thing for everyone else (outside our head) to see, experience and enjoy. Samantha Wills is an award-winning designer, author, speaker, and advocate for the arts. Founding one of Australia's most popular jewellery brands from her dining table at just 21, which went on to be hailed as "Australia's biggest export since Vegemite." Her debut book, Of Gold & Dust, became an instant bestseller, chronicling her journey with raw vulnerability and humour, revealing the realities of a creative founder behind the highlight reel of social media and public appearances. On this week's episode of ScaleUp Radio we have another valuable presentation, centred around Critical Numbers. When we say Critical Numbers, we're not just referring to the financial side of the business, critical numbers are used throughout the framework of your company; from accountability through to rhythms. With this presentation we're going to explain just what Critical Numbers are; the importance of them to the scale up journey of your business, the common mistake most people make - and what the effect of ignoring them, or neglecting them, could mean. We'll also help you define your own Critical Numbers, giving you advice about fitting them into your Business Rhythms. As with all of the ScaleUp Radio presentations, I refer to tools and techniques. If you'd like a copy of them, there is a link in the show notes. Following the presentation, there is also a panel discussion of business owners talking about Critical Numbers, and the challenges they've faced using them within their business - and how they dealt with those challenges. You might think that this is a little dry as a subject - but Critical Numbers are important when it comes to your scale up journey. On this week's episode of ScaleUp we have a business presentation for you, all around the theme of Empowerment. When we talk about Empowerment we're referring to the team within your business; giving them accountability and responsibility for the work that they do. For some business owners Empowerment is a difficult area to work through, because it's all about giving up some control - without feeling that you're out of control. We also describe it as going from a Leader - Follower model to a Leader - Manager, Leader - Leader model. As always with these presentations on ScaleUp Radio, there is a lot of advice and practical help that you can put into practice straight away. Plenty of subjects covered, including: - How, and where, empowerment needs to begin within your business; and why trust is a major part of the process - Why empowerment isn't just handing over the business - and how you go about creating a framework for empowerment - How a system of Empowerment needs another presentation we've done on Business Rhythms to be in place to get the most out of it. You'll also hear from other business owners who will discuss their own approaches to Empowerment - and the challenges they've faced when implementing it. I also mention some tools and images within this presentation, and if you would like a copy of them there is an email address in the show notes. Turn The Ship Around! By L. In this week's chat, I am incredibly excited to bring you our guest; the beautiful Samantha Wills. For those of you who are not familiar with Samantha, she is the creative powerhouse behind the Samantha Wills jewellery brand. Starting this business in 2004, as a fresh face 21-year-old from her dining room table, she grew it into a successful global business. She lived in New York for 10 years, had production houses in Asia and India, and offices in France and Japan. She then famously announced its closure in mid 2018, when it was continuing to enjoy widespread commercial success. Because there was a lot more going on behind the scenes. Samantha has recently written a memoir of her life's journey in her book Of Gold and Dust, which is a beautiful, unveiled, and honest account of what it took for her to build the Samantha Wills jewellery brand, the sacrifices that it required of her, and how it took her a two-year journey to come to the decision to close what was a highly successful business. Samantha is an incredibly talented and intuitive businesswoman; she has come up with some genius ways of creating business partnerships and staying true to herself. So, in today's conversation, we dive into all of this and cover everything from the rise of her business, to how she felt in some of those darkest times navigating very personal and professional challenges that she encountered, along with the resilience that you can find when you're sitting in the rubble of your life. And most importantly, the power that comes from rising out of that. We also dive into how the strength of her values guided her exit from the business and the courage and integrity that comes with that through to a fearful moment as she started to turn 30. And she was realising that she had been sacrificing so much for her business, she hadn't been ticking life's boxes or the boxes that we're told that we should be ticking. This is a conversation that will really going to get you thinking about your own life choices. It's going to have you nodding along in agreement, and it's really going to give you a good laugh along the way. She is a beautiful person both inside, generous with her energy and wisdom. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did. Melissa Marsden Instagram | LinkedIn | Website

You know I'm no stranger to a fangirl moment, but this one is really up there. Having followed her journey for over a decade and pored over her fabulous new book, Of Gold and Dust, our guest this week is none other than Samantha Wills. You may have heard parts of how she grew her multimillion-dollar global eponymous jewellery label from her kitchen table and the Bondi markets at just 21 years old to a string of stores from Singapore to New York and the likes of J.Lo, Eva Mendes and Katy Perry clamouring to wear her jewellery. For any aspiring business owners, she has so much to share about the 12 years it took her to overnight success covering the scale up, brand growth, community building and taking things one chapter at a time. Her brilliant new book also reveals some of the character-building "shitter bits" (as you know I like to call them) along the way from $80,000 of debt, burnout, personal turmoil and crippling impostor syndrome – I didn't realise she was a TAFE double drop out. But what I find MOST fascinating about her story is that just when Samantha Wills Jewellery had truly solidified itself as an undeniable success, she closed the business and walked away. For someone as fascinated as I am by redefining the metrics by which you measure your life, knowing when your jigsaw puzzle need a shake up and choosing happiness before success, this was such an engaging chat I barely knew where to start. I hope it's as enlightening and eye opening for you as it was for me. This episode discusses the impact self-worth, determination and ultimately sacrifice has on “having it all”. Earlier this year, Samantha Wills launched her business memoir 'Of Gold and Dust' which follows her journey from being named ‘A Breakout Star' by The New York Times to barely being able to breathe on a hotel room floor. Her inspiring story is changing the narrative surrounding what it means to be a modern entrepreneur as well as a Modern Woman and we're so honoured to have her on this podcast. This special episode was recorded live at our In Conversation with Samantha Wills event held in Bendigo earlier this year. In March, my dream of hosting a keynote speaker in my home town became a reality all thanks to the wonderfully kind, creative and inspiring Samantha Wills. Samantha travelled from Sydney to Bendigo so that 85 people could sit close to home and listen to her stories of business, love and life that she has fabulously written in her memoir 'Of Gold and Dust'. Samantha's story is an inspiring blueprint for getting out there and finding the magic that awaits you. Here are some of the conversations we had during the evening where Samantha talks about storytelling, business, debt, community, creative life, women's health and more. If you haven't already, go and purchase a copy of Samantha's book ‘Of Gold and Dust'. It is a must read memoir for anyone who has a desire to start their own business or a passion to live a creative life and follow their dreams. I'm beyond excited for today's first guest interview on Life and Business In Flow. This is someone who I adore in business and who has had an incredible career to date. She is so open, genuine and honest and is the queen of branding and storytelling. When I sat down to plan the guestlist for the podcast, there was one person at the top of that list, and today, I'm so proud to bring to the community, Samantha Wills. It all began with a passion for jewellery making and selling her designs at the Bondi Markets into running a global multi-million-dollar brand and empire. She didn't stop there. In 2016, the Samantha Wills foundation was founded, a platform designed to empower women in business. Samantha is a dynamic speaker and the author of a beautiful new book, Of Gold and Dust, Memoir of a creative life. We talk about all things branding, manifestation, the pesky imposter syndrome, and Samantha shares her advice for other women in business. I am being honest and upfront here, I think I have found my newest girl crush. What a totally inspiring superstar today’s guest is. I am even willing to move on from her smooth peanut butter choice (I know madness). Samantha Wills will leave you inspired as she shares her story openly and full of raw honesty and humour. As she says, “It took me no less than twelve years to become and overnight success.” Technically Samantha could be a ‘So I Quit’ guest but she shares her incredible journey in her first book ‘Of Gold and Dust’ making her a ‘Book Club’ episode. At just 21, Samantha Wills founded her own global self-titled jewellery company. Starting from her kitchen table in Bondi with an in-demand jewellery party-plan business, Samantha gained her first big break at Australian Fashion Week in 2004. She was thrust into the spotlight as a stream of celebrities were photographed wearing her pieces - Drew Barrymore, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, P!nk (to name a few). But when some of her earrings were selected to appear in Sex and The City, the young designer relocated to New York to build the brand on an international stage. After Samantha’s early recovery from $80k debt she turned over her first million by age 26. The business went from strength to strength, building a cult following. But in 2019 Samantha stunned the world with the brand’s seemingly sudden closure, at its peak as a multi-million-dollar company. In Of Gold and Dust she shares the journey of this 15-year business venture (a very public brand) along with stories of her private life with rawness and humour. If you haven't read Of Gold & Dust, by Samantha Wills - pause this podcast immediately and go out and get yourself a copy. If you don't already know, Samantha Wills became a highly sought after jewellery designer after turning her little kitchen table hobby into a global success. She has been at the helm of several other successful businesses and a creative director who on the surface, appeared to be living an exceedingly glamourous life between New York and Sydney. What most people don't know, is exactly what it took to get to that place. Just how much Samantha poured into her creative career from within every inch of her soul, her energy and in amassed credit card debt. This is a story for anyone, who has ever thought about doing ANYTHING. A brilliant reminder that no one is an overnight success and just how vital it is to listen to your intuition, surround yourself with the right people and wrangle that nagging inner critic back into darkest recesses of your mind, where they belong. Samantha bares it all in this brilliant memoir and it was such a thrill to unpack some of the themes with her in this conversation. Importantly, Samantha shares in great detail, her ongoing battle with endometriosis and the pressure that she and so many women face, in choosing a life for themselves with or without children. With Guest Samantha Wills. At just 21, Samantha Wills founded her own global self-titled jewellery company. Starting from her kitchen table in Bondi with an in-demand jewellery party-plan business, Samantha gained her first big break at Australian Fashion Week in 2004. She was thrust into the spotlight as a stream of celebrities were photographed wearing her pieces - Drew Barrymore, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Pink. But when some of her earrings were selected to appear in Sex and The City, the young designer relocated to New York to build the brand on an international stage. After Samantha's early recovery from $80k debt she turned over her first million by age 26. The business went from strength to strength, building a cult following. But in 2019 Samantha stunned the world with the brand's seemingly sudden closure, at its peak as a multi-million-dollar company. Samantha, after many years of ignoring symptoms of pain, finally took herself to a doctor and was diagnosed with endometriosis and was operated on immediately. Samantha shares openly about this so that it may this serve as an important reminder to always listen to our bodies, no matter how busy we may be. Following Samantha's journey, from being named a breakout star by The New York Times to barely being able to breathe on a hotel room floor she has put all of her story down on paper, Of Gold and Dust is so much more than a business memoir. In her unique, confessional tone, Samantha tells the intimate details of her life and business, sharing her truths with a rare rawness and vulnerability.Samantha has spent the last decade in New York City. Having just returned home to Australia, she now resides in NSW as a creative director and keynote speaker. In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, we had the opportunity to hear from multi-million-dollar business owner and new author Samantha Wills. ‘Gold and Dust – a memoir of a creative life’ is due to be released on 2 March 2021. ‘I’ve always been quite open with sharing my story –it’s the most honest and vulnerable bit of work I have done in my career so far.’ In her book, Samantha explains that the universe only has 3 answers for us – Yes, not right now, or I have something better in store for you. Tory and Samantha were standing in her fabulous designer studio in Alexandria when Samantha had a dream to build a global brand. ‘As a 22-year-old I had gotten myself into 80k worth of debt. I just knew it could be something more but I didn’t know how I was going to navigate it’ says Samantha. ‘When my paths crossed with my business partner, Geoff Bainbridge in 2007, it all changed and the business expanded to America. Finding herself in New York, the city we are made to believe dreams are made, Samantha was expanding rapidly and celebrities were starting to endorse her product. At times we seem to have it all together and we don’t. ‘The biggest mistake I made in our business – I tried to change the brand to fit the market, rather than trying to find the market that was authentic to our brand’ explains Samantha. ‘I had to sit in my own darkness. It wasn’t just me we had a team of 60 people who were looking to me as a founder and creative director. I had let them down and my customer down.’ In 2011, feeling defeated, Samantha opened the newspaper where there was a half-page spread in the New York Times calling her the “breakout star of the year”. ‘With any brand, it’s about honouring where you’ve come from but also moving forward.’ Seeing the need to go back to the foundations of the clients, Samantha did some important grassroots research. ‘I learnt that the market dictates who you are as a brand. I was chasing the wrong consumer and that was the consistent feedback. It’s just when I was ready to hear it.’ Life can take us in unexpected directions. ‘There is always a parallel –I found out my partner of 3 years was cheating on me. I was medicating heavily to survive’ what you see on Instagram isn’t always the reality. But, in life, the struggles also come with lessons. Samantha says ‘As humans, we hold on so tightly to an outcome we think is meant to be that we can lose all perspective on what is happening around us.’ In her book, Samantha talks a lot about holding on tightly. She felt discomfort in her creativity and put it down to a creative block. ‘When that flicker goes out it’s a scary time. I was designing with my hands and not my heart.’ After 2 years of internal torment, she sought insight from the universe. She shares a powerful moment where her heart told her ‘it’s time to close’. ‘It just felt right – and it was the calmest decision I’ve ever made.’ In 2019 Samantha closed the business and physically made space to write her book. ‘I don’t know if you are ever ready to leave New York – but letting go and not holding on too tightly gives you space to thrive.’ Samantha is now working with a happy heart. “I feel like I am in alignment. As women, we take on everything as gospel. It is in our fibre. Samantha’s advice - ‘Strip away what no longer serves you – when we can shed that we become clear on our authentic self.’ Finding your authentic self is the biggest gift the universe will give you. The next powerful step for Samantha is launching her book into the world on March 2 2021. ‘I want to hand over what has worked for me, and what hasn’t so that we can all share our stories’ and wake up with a happy heart each day and find alignment in our dreams.’ So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Samantha Wills. In late 2016 Fernando Manrique hooked two gas cylinders up to his Sydney home. Those cylinders contained deadly carbon monoxide, an odourless colourless gas which would, later that night, filter through the bedrooms of his wife and two children. The story that first hit the headlines wasn't the same as the one we're hearing at the inquest now. Those headlines pointed to stressed parents and the burden of raising children with a disability. Reporter Ava Benny-Morrison will talk us through what really happened on the night Maria Lutz and her children were murdered and we speak to a woman who shares with us the impact of feeling sympathy for parents who kill their disabled children. She has been featured as one of the top female entrepreneurs in Canada by the w100 and also recognized as a top 20 under 40 entrepreneur by Business London. Diana has built a highly profitable 7 figure company, been on Dragon's Den (the Canadian version of Shark Tank), done a successful crowdsourcing campaign and sold two businesses in the e-commerce space. She now works with her fellow entrepreneur husband on Fast Forward Ventures a company focussed on private financing and commercial real estate investing. Diana currently consults 1-on-1 with entrepreneurs on their business’ finances and is writing "the" book and course on entrepreneur finance "by an entrepreneur." What do you think has contributed to your success? Diana would like to say it was talent but admits it was grind. She is not one of those people that think you need to grind your whole life and work 60-80 hours a week. But she got to where she is today through hard work and determination. When her companies were in start-up mode she worked her butt off. There are certain seasons where you need to have laser focus and, determination and do whatever it takes. So let’s talk about your first business and the grind there. What did that really look like when you were first starting out? After applying for creative roles and not getting a single interview Diana was struggling. This was her time to get out there and start adding value to the world, but no-one wanted her. One day she went to a job fair and instead of applying for a job, she ended up applying for a business grant. She received a $3000 to start a new company. The day she launched her e-commerce website she paid for the site in a single day and did over $10K in sales. This company was Tiny Devotions which sold mala beads and yoga inspired jewelry. This was the first company to make a product in this niche in North America. After you decided not to become a layer you started making mala beads. How did that come about? After law school, knew she didn’t want to be a lawyer but didn’t have a better plan. So she sold all her belongings and fled to Bali where she signed up for a yoga teacher training. In Bali, she started to look for a business idea. She came up with 3 ideas, import art from Bali, do yoga teaching and retreats or create yoga jewelry. She had followed the rise of Lululemon and could see that yoga was growing in popularity and an industry was springing up around it. Where did money fit into her mindset? Diana knew she was going back to Canada from Australia in 2 months and that that was when reality was to set in. She felt going to Bali was her last opportunity to do something crazy before going back to Canada and she even went into debt in order to go. When she went back to Canada she did a legal placement while living with her parents. After a talk from her father, she realized she needed to minimize her discretionary spending and pay off her debt. After that experience, she decided to learn to manage her money and never be in debt again. How did you find customers when you launched? What worked 10 years ago would not work now. She used social media and influencer marketer – before influencer marketing was a thing. She did this by sending products to influential yoga teachers. With her current company, which she started 3 months ago, she is not yet doing paid marketing. Although she has the money for it, at this stage in the company she is leveraging relationships she has built over the years to get access to audiences. What has been your experience with exits? The second company she created was actually sold first. This was an e-commerce sock company that was also a social enterprise company. It loaned profits from the socks to entrepreneurs in Cuba. Tiny Devotions became successful very quickly, but Diana struggled to feel in alignment with the business for many years. It took 2 years to sell the business and she had 20 deals fall apart before she was able to sell the company. Now looking back, she realizes she should have started the process of selling the company as soon as she started to fall out of alignment with it. What advice would you give to someone who wants to make a transition because they are out of alignment? Having awareness is really important and coaches can really help with that. Diana worked with career transition coach Rikke Hansen for a year when she decided to sell Tiny Devotions. She also points out that it is important to take baby steps and that trial runs can be extremely helpful. I’d love to hear about your current business. What are you offering? Diana has a private lending company that gives loans to people who banks won’t finance. She is also a commercial real state developer and investor. These are things she runs concurrently with her entrepreneurial ventures. Since she had experience in the finance space she decided to start providing financial consulting to entrepreneurs. She is currently started working 1 on 1 with entrepreneurs in her network, taking them through the framework she has developed over the past 10 years. In the spring she will be launching the Profit Accelerator which will be a group-based program for entrepreneurs. What do you do to maintain your level of ability to perform? She is finding that being in startup mode, she currently has an unstoppable mindset. As a Christian, she puts her faith first, with a prayer practice and regularly going to church. She finds journaling important to be reflective and self-aware. She also likes to have a community of strong women around her to call her on her bullshit. Although she loves the grind, it can be crazy and she tries to make sure that she is able to dial it back when she needs to. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? The best advice she’s been given was from her neighbor, who was a very successful entrepreneur. He told her that ‘what is more important than what you do with your life, is who you spend it with’. What’s an action step that you want to offer someone listening to this podcast? She has an opt-in on her website www.dianahouse.com that has her framework – 10 profitability essentials for entrepreneurs. Outside her own stuff, if you’ve never had a coach, hire a coach. Hire a great coach and do the work to enable you to grow as fast and as big as you can. How can we get in-touch with you? “You hold onto things so tightly you start to hinder the growth of the business,” says Samantha. Having started out making jewellery at night while studying and selling them at Bondi Beach markets on weekends, doing everything herself seemed only natural. Samantha's first foray into marketing netted $17,000 worth of orders from a $500 outlay, which led her to quit her retail job the next day. At just 21 and with $90 to her name, Samantha Wills admits her parents were aghast at her bold decision to quit her retail job and sell her handmade jewellery. Now, some 13 years later, she has a business empire bearing her name, which is headquartered in Sydney with offices in New York, LA, Paris, Korea and Japan. Speaking exclusively on the My Business Podcast, Samantha discusses ‘hustling' for new business and useful connections, how to avoid spreading yourself too thinly as well as the challenges of taking a successful business back to start-up mode when entering a new market. http://www.mybusiness.com.au https://twitter.com/philliptarrant
