Alan Parsons cut his teeth as an assistant on the Beatles' Abby Road, and by 1973 he was the main engineer for Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. Producing was the next step and, in 1975, the Scottish band Pilot had a top five it with the song "Magic". Parsons joined with songwriter and keyboardist Eric Woolfson and arranger Andrew Powell and, with Pilot and a number of session musicians vocalist, produced Tales of Mystery and Imagination in 1976. What was originally a one-off collaboration began a full studio band, stripped down for their first hit album I Robot and even further for the third album, Pyramid. Though pretty much an overlooked album in Parsons's catalogue, it features excellent songwriting by Eric Woolfson and the first vocal performances of bassist David Paton and former Zombies vocalist Colin Blunstone on one of the Project's records.

1976 widmen sich The Alan Parsons Project auf ihrem Album "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" den düsteren Texten des amerikanischen Autors Edgar Alan Poe. Beim Album "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" trifft Literatur auf Pop- und Rockmusik – Hochkultur auf Popkultur. Was absurd klingt, war aber in den 70er Jahren keine Seltenheit. Viele klassisch ausgebildete Musiker wandten sich mit ihrem Backround der Pop- und Rockmusik zu. Der Progressive Rock hat an vielen Stellen versucht klassische Hochkultur abzubilden. Um diese Hochkultur auch musikalisch angemessen wiederzugeben, hat eine normale Band nicht ausgereicht. So haben sich The Alan Parsons Project noch etwas Unterstützung dazugeholt. Über 40 verschiedene Musiker waren an der Produktion des Albums beteiligt, unter anderem auch John Miles. Die Idee, die Texte von Edgar Alan Poe zu vertonen stammt nicht von Alan Parsons selbst, sondern von seinem Kollegen Eric Woolfson. Der kam spannenderweise über einen Marketing-Workshop auf die Idee zu dem Album. Der Leiter dieses Workshops brachte Eric Woolfson auf die Idee zu dem Album, weil er erzählte, dass jedes Buch und jeder Film, der die Inhalte von Edgar Alan Poe verarbeitet hatte Gewinn erzielt hat – ein gutes Vorzeichen auch für ein Album zu den Werken des Schriftstellers – und auch hier sollte der Leiter des Marketing-Workshops recht behalten. "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" war Alan Parsons Startschuss für eine unglaubliche Musikerkarriere. Vor allem in Deutschland kam die Musik von Alan Parsons richtig gut an. Alan Parsons hat viele Alben veröffentlicht, am erfolgreichsten war er allerdings bei uns in Deutschland. No son pocos los músicos que han puesto banda sonora a la gran obra del escritor norteamericano Edgar Allan Poe, un escritor que tuvo una vida realmente complicada y que es sobre todo conocido por sus libros de terror, aunque su bibliografía es mucho más amplia. Vamos hoy a ocuparnos de un disco donde se pone música a la obra de este escritor. Empezaremos hablando brevemente sobre lo que fue el Proyecto Alan Parsons. Dicho proyecto fue en realidad una banda británica de rock progresivo que estuvo activa desde 1975 hasta 1990, aunque de hecho sigue haciendo giras, lo que no sabemos es hasta qué punto tienen relación o no con la idea original, ya que Alan Parsons no parece que participe en las mismas, aunque en la página web del músico y productor sí que habla abiertamente de las giras del proyecto, por lo que es de suponer que, como mínimo cuenta con su beneplácito. Como más adelante veremos, el proyecto fue creado por él mismo y por el también productor y músico Eric Woolfson, que tristemente desapareció en 2009. La banda contaba en sus discos con una serie de músicos que iban y venían, la mayoría de ellos músicos de sesión, como lo fue el mismo John Miles. Aun así, contaban con algunos miembros más o menos estables como el guitarrista Ian Bairson, el bajista y vocalista David Paton, el batería Stuart Elliot o el cantante Lenny Zakatek. Las composiciones siempre iban firmadas por ambos, Parsons y Woolfson, como han hecho otros grandes del rock como Lennon y McCartney o Jagger y Richards. Alan Parsons worked as assistant engineer on the last two albums by The Beatles and after he qualified as a fully-fledged recording engineer, he went on to work with Paul McCartney and The Hollies among many others. But it was his contribution as engineer on Pink Floyd's classic The Dark Side Of The Moon that really got him world attention. That soon led to striking successes as a producer – notably with Pilot's Magic, John Miles' Highfly and Music and Steve Harley's (Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile. He also produced the hugely successful Year Of The Cat album with Al Stewart and two albums with American prog rock band Ambrosia. Es ist das erfolgreichste Album der Band: “Eye In The Sky”. Im Mai 1982 brachte das Alan Parsons Project ihr legendäres Album raus, das jetzt seinen 40. Geburtstag feiert. “Eye In The Sky” ist bereits das sechste Studioalbum der Band, die vor allem in ihren ersten Jahren sehr produktiv waren. Von 1975 bis 1980 veröffentlichte die Band jedes Jahr ein neues Album. Dieses „Auge am Himmel“ steht bei dem Albumtitel für die Überwachung. Es ist nämlich ein Konzeptalbum, dass die Annahme voraussetzt, dass wir unter ständiger Beobachtung stehen. Das Album wurde nach seiner Veröffentlichung 1982 für zwölf Grammys nominiert, konnte damals aber keinen gewinnen. Erst 2019. 35 Jahre später gab es zur Wiederveröffentlichung des Albums endlich einen Grammy für das “Best Immersive Audio Album” (übersetzt: das beste Raumklang-Album). Dabei kannte sich Bandgründer Alan Parsons schon bei der Ur-Veröffentlichung mit Raumklang und Sound aus. Nicht umsonst war er Tontechniker in den legendären Abbey Road Studios und hat auch bei den letzten Platten der Beatles am Sound getüftelt. In den Abbey Road Studios lernte Parsons dann auch Eric Woolfson kennen. A tiempo que se sepa un poco de la historia de The Alan Parsons Project, o de sus discos, siempre incluían al menos un tema instrumental en cada disco, pero en su caso particular eran canciones instrumentales de un nivel superlativo, que se convirtieron muchas de ellas en auténticos hits utilizados en cuñas radiofónicas, anuncios, como entrada de programas televisivos, o incluso cuando un partido en los años 80 su conexión se cortaba (en los años 70-80 era muy habitual) solía entrar una imagen fija con una melodía de esta banda. Hoy quería reivindicar esas piezas eligiendo una de ellas, como representante de otras muchas, The Gold Bug que estaba presente en el álbum de 1980 The turn of a friendly card. Sintetizadores, coros y aquí un saxofón, son los grandes protagonistas, además de los arreglos orquestales de Andrew Powell. Todos estos temas se reunirían en un recopilatorio llamado The Instrumental Works, y que recomiendo a todo el mundo, a parte como no, de los propios discos de esta formación. The Turn of a Friendly Card es el quinto álbum de estudio de la banda inglesa The Alan Parsons Project. Publicado en 1980 por Arista Records se trata de un álbum conceptual, encuadrable en el rock progresivo, que gira en torno a las apuestas y los juegos de azar al estilo de lo que se ve en las salas de juego y casinos de Montecarlo y Las Vegas. The Turn of a Friendly Card narra la historia de un hombre adulto quien, tras comenzar a sentirse insatisfecho con su vida, decide ir a un casino a apostar todo cuanto tiene, para luego perderlo completamente. El concepto de riesgo, presente en las mesas de juego, tiene obvios paralelismos con los riesgos que se corren en la vida cotidiana, al tomar decisiones ("apostar" metafóricamente hablando) trascendentales. Al parecer Eric Woolfson encontró abundante inspiración lírica para este concepto al encontrarse en esa época viviendo en el Principado de Mónaco. El LP original contenía la suite homónima ocupando casi completamente la cara B. En la versión en CD la suite fue dividida en cinco pistas separadas. No obstante hay ediciones que incluyen la canción sin cortes. El álbum contiene dos canciones que tuvieron notable difusión en emisoras de radio hasta la actualidad: la rítmica «Games People Play»5 y la balada «Time». Esta última fue la primera aparición vocal de Eric Woolfson en un disco de The Alan Parsons Project. An exploration of editing and tape composition with the voice as a key source of audio material. This is an interpretative reading of the poem "Sirens" from chapter 11 of the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. This release on the Philips Prospective 21e Siècle is shorter than the one released around the same time on the Turnabout label in America. It omits the spoken sequence at the beginning where Berberian recites the words prior to them being manipulated on tape. Anne Clark, "Swimming" and "An Ordinary Life" from The Sitting Room (1982 Red Flame). Clark is a foremost British poet who fuses her texts with electronic music. This was the first of her albums. The late Eric Woolfson spent the 70s and 80s as the silent but equal partner of Alan Parsons in the rock band named after the producer. Having penned hits like "Games People Play" and "Time," and even singing several of them himself, Woolfson eventually moved on from rock radio to writing scores for musical theatre. His subjects included historical figures like Sigmund Freud, Antoni Gaudi, and of course Edgar Allan Poe. With five such productions out there, it only follows that instead of spotlighting well-known Alan Parsons Project tracks, we take a look at one song from each of those musicals. Among those, you'll hear some updated takes on APP songs from years past, and Woolfson himself singing his own words once more. The Alan Parsons Project (TAPP) ha significado una especial forma de hacer música, oscilando entre el rock sinfónico, la música electrónica y el pop, que ha dejado marcados a fuego no pocos recuerdos inolvidables a cuatro generaciones de melómanos. El proyecto iniciado en 1975 por Alan Parsons, Eric Woolfson y Andrew Powell, marcado por una excelente producción y el dominio de las mejores técnicas de sonido, nos ha dejado algunas obras que con el tiempo han pasado a ser consideradas con letras de oro en la música del último cuarto del siglo XX. En este nueva emisión hemos elegido repasar la obra de dos de los músicos argentinos más importantes de la historia del rock nacional, Luis Alberto Spinetta y Norberto Aníbal Napolitano -Pappo-. Spinetta, músico ecléctico, dotado de un exquisito don compositivo, supo desarrollar distintos estilos musicales (pop, rock, jazz-rock) fundando bandas míticas como Almendra, Pescado Rabioso y Spinetta Jade dejando un legado musical imborrable. Desentrañaremos su carrera musical con temas tales como Bajan, Me gusta ese tajo, Seguir viviendo sin tu amor, No te alejes tanto de mi y Tema del pototo (Para saber cómo es la soledad)" . Pappo, su música no por ser más simple resulta menos importante, fue uno de los precursores del bues con la Pappo´s Blues y del hard rock con Riff, dos bandas que marcaron tendencia y dieron el puntapié incial en el crecimiento de ambos estilos musicales. Continuando con nuestra pequeña historia del rock, nos habíamos quedado en el final de la crisis energética y admirando la eclosión de un buen número de grandes grupos. Como una pincelada, escuchamos la excelente canción de Kansas, “Dust in the wind”. Pero hubo muchos más, por ejemplo, Styx, con su éxito “Lady”. Al principio de su carrera se dedicó a actuar y grabar de forma local, llegándole el éxito en la misma medida. Pero, en 1973, reunió The Silver Bullet Band, un grupo de músicos del área de Detroit, con el que alcanzó ya el éxito a nivel nacional con el álbum Live Bullet, grabado en vivo en 1975 en el Cobo Hall de Detroit, Míchigan. En 1976, consigue un nuevo éxito nacional con el álbum de estudio Night Moves. Bob Seger es un roquero de raíces, con una clásica voz raspada. Ha escrito y grabado canciones que tratan del amor, las mujeres y temas sobre la clase trabajadora, y se ha preocupado siempre por escribir sobre el estilo de vida del trabajador estadounidense. Continuando con nuestra pequeña historia del rock, nos habíamos quedado en el final de la crisis energética y admirando la eclosión de un buen número de grandes grupos. Como una pincelada, escuchamos la excelente canción de Kansas, “Dust in the wind”. Pero hubo muchos más, por ejemplo, Styx, con su éxito “Lady”. Born and raised in Swansea, UK, Steve started out singing in rock bands as a teenager before he came to the public's attention in the mid '90s by way of a beard, long hair and a loincloth - playing Jesus in a West End revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. Signing to Columbia Records soon after the messiah complex wore off, he was molded into a poppy/rocky/folky/country-ish artist - nothing like covering all the bases - and made an album, All I Am. "Despite the musical schizophrenia, he had a ton of fun travelling the world and writing lots of songs, and I even got to play live on legendary UK television's Top Of The Pops, and even made the charts." Steve formed a country rock band, The Storys, made 3 albums and toured the globe with the great and the good, including Santana, Celine Dion, Joe Cocker and Elton John, who declared their first album 'fantastic!'. He is part of an ongoing prog/electronica project with Rob Reed of Magenta called chimpanA. "The first album upset Q Magazine so much that they declared it was 'drowning in a sea of pretentiousness'. They'll be over the moon that our second album is nearly finished." More recently Steve made an Americana/Country album with Rosalie Deighton called Unfolding. In between these adventures, Steve got to write songs for lots of artists including Meatloaf, Slash, and Cliff Richard, worked with heroes Jon Lord of Deep Purple, Eric Woolfson of The Alan Parsons Project, and even gave a singing lesson to Robert Plant. Steve is currently recording a collection of old, new, borrowed and blue songs for a series of 4 EPs. "They've got a kind of Americana vibe, I guess because it's all I'm really listening to these days, and I think they are sounding really sweet. Words feature very heavily in this genre, and I'm really enjoying wrestling lyrics to the mat, and trying to really get inside the songs, digging deep to soul mine my truth right now. FEATURE: The Alan Parsons Project - I Robot from JUNE 1977 Isaac Asimov's science fiction was the inspiration for The Alan Parsons Project's second album, and I Robot draws on concepts of artificial intelligence in its songs. The Alan Parsons Project is a progressive rock group led by Parsons and Eric Woolfson at the core and surrounding themselves with session musicians. Alan Parsons had extensive credibility in the industry as Assistant Engineer for The Beatles "Abby Road" and "Let It Be," and had served as Engineer for Pink Floyd's monster album "The Dark Side of the Moon." Parsons and Woodson would go on to put out many albums and hits as The Alan Parsons Project. Genesis Ch. 1 V.32 This is the last track on the album. Alan Parsons has a symphonic quality, and often features instrumental music such as this track. The book of Genesis in the Bible only contains 31 verses in chapter 1, and this title is an allusion to the fall of man and the rise of the machine. This is spelled out on the album where it says, "I Robot, the story of the rise of the machine and the decline of man, which paradoxically coincided with his discovery of the wheel, and a warning that his brief dominance of this planet will probably end because man tried to create robot in his own image." Total Eclipse Another essentially instrumental song with an ethereal, almost movie soundtrack quality. I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You This track was one of the popular singles from this album, and has made it onto Grand Theft Auto V, and the TV series Mind Hunter. The back beat is a distinctive sign that this album was released during the height of the disco era. Check out the abrupt ending. Breakdown The lead singer reminds our group of Lindsey Buckingham. Alan Parsons used a number of session musicians, and this provides a lot of variety in the sound. MOVIE OR SHOW TUNE: Star Wars Main Theme Here's one we all know well. Folks were lining up for the movie Star Wars, and John Williams hit a home run with this instrumental masterpiece. STAFF PICKS: Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel This was the first hit off Gabriel's first solo album. While this song is about his leaving Genesis, but Gabriel succeeds in keeping the song positive rather than feeling like he had an axe to grind. Written in 7/4 time. Rocky's Hot Club - Peter Frampton This song was inspired by Frampton's dog. Stevie Wonder plays harmonica on this entertaining track. Peter Frampton had done well with "Frampton Comes Alive," and considered himself to have rushed his next album. Smoke From a Distant Fire - Sanford-Townsend Band This one-hit wonder reached number 9 on the Billboard chart. These songwriters for Loggins and Messina had written this song a decade before it was released. Telephone Line - Electric Light Orchestra Jeff Lynne's ELO was a technological and symphonic delight. ELO's concerts entertained both in their orchestration and in the lighting and special effects they brought to bear. LAUGH TRACK Ain't Gonna Bump No More — Joe Tex This novelty song gives sage (but politically incorrect) advice on who to avoid on the disco floor!

As an assistant engineer at Abbey Road Studios in the late 60’s, a young Alan Parsons was just beginning his journey into a successful career in music that has spanned several decades as an engineer, producer, musician, educator and actor. His story and his work have been heralded by industry peers, as well as his fans. From lending his engineering talents to projects with the Beatles, the Hollies, Paul McCartney, not to mention his contributions to Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side Of The Moon”, to his role as a producer with acts such as Pilot, Al Stewart and Ambrosia, to his work with Eric Woolfson in the Alan Parsons Project, Alan Parsons has undoubtedly delivered a legendary career in the music industry.
