Alan Parsons cut his teeth as an assistant on the Beatles' Abby Road, and by 1973 he was the main engineer for Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. Producing was the next step and, in 1975, the Scottish band Pilot had a top five it with the song "Magic". Parsons joined with songwriter and keyboardist Eric Woolfson and arranger Andrew Powell and, with Pilot and a number of session musicians vocalist, produced Tales of Mystery and Imagination in 1976. What was originally a one-off collaboration began a full studio band, stripped down for their first hit album I Robot and even further for the third album, Pyramid. Though pretty much an overlooked album in Parsons's catalogue, it features excellent songwriting by Eric Woolfson and the first vocal performances of bassist David Paton and former Zombies vocalist Colin Blunstone on one of the Project's records.

They talk about the shocking realities of social housing shortages and homelessness amongst veterans and other groups. Carole and Andrew also reveal the ways property investors can make money while making a massive difference through social impact investing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Childhood adversity led Andrew to join the military, which he loved, but he still struggled mentally After Afghanistan, marital and family breakdowns caused a crisis for Andrew including alcohol, drugs, crime and then suicide attempts Andrew's first call for help was rejected, showing Andrew that only he could save himself He created education projects and armed forces housing services to help people from similar backgrounds Andrew's mission was to provide 24/7 supported housing for vulnerable veterans and it led to him creating Bancroft House Funding repairs and staff is one of the biggest barriers, heating alone costs £40k annually The move-on process to independent living for many is hindered by a lack of available housing stock Investors can fund buildings and houses, they can make donations that make a massive social impact and business sense too BEST MOMENTS "I was homeless at the age of 14, never finished school. So the only thing for me to do to, to escape and try and find a real family unit and connection was to join the military." "When I picked that phone up and spoke to somebody, I was actually told that was too complex for the service. And to take myself to A&E. And I was wished all the best, and the phone was put down on me." "If they were willing to buy the property, do it up, and then wait for their return on investment, so then becomes a longer game, that would work." "Because it's not just veterans who are struggling. Homelessness, it's vast." "If we can make it work on that rate...then we're fine." Darrell, co-host of Bush Telegraph had the rare opportunity of chatting with Andrew Powell, producer and arranger of Kate's first two iconic albums, The Kick Inside and Lionheart. Listen in as they discuss the very first time Powell met Cathy Bush as a 16 year old, and the songs they eventually chose and recorded together. We also get to hear how Kate's vocal and piano playing with a live orchestra for 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' was recorded all in one take - still at this incredibly young age. Many new things are revealed and discussed. What David Bowie song did Kate cover when Powell worked with her in Japan? What songs did not get included on the published albums? And what was it like for Andrew Powell to hear 'Wuthering Heights' for the first time played by Kate in his flat? These questions and a whole lot more are revealed in this podcast with iconic producer, arranger, composer, conductor and musician, Andrew Powell.

Listen to Natalie Gamble (a solicitor and the director of NGA law) and Andrew Powell (a barrister at 4PB) consider the current law in respect of surrogacy before the law commission releases their final report due in Spring 2023. This is a wide-ranging discussion about the principles behind surrogacy, surrogates consent, and commercial surrogacy. This is a really helpful episode if you have a client approach you about obtaining a parental order in respect of their child. We discuss reading down the legislation to make it compatible with the Human Rights Act 1998, and the concern about the impact on individual's rights in this field if they did not have recourse to invite the Court to make a Declaration of Incompatibility. During this discussion, Natalie and Andrew refer to: Re X (A Child) (Surrogacy: Time limit) [2014] EWHC 3135 (Fam) - where the High Court read down the legislation to permit a parental order to be made after the 6 month time limit has expired. Re Z (A Child) (No 2)https://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Fam/2016/1191.html - where the Court made a Declaration of Incompatabilty in respect of the statute at that time which required two applicants for a parental order; this has since been amended. Re X [2020] EWFC 39 - https://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWFC/HCJ/2020/39.html - where the High Court read down the legislation to permit a parental order to be made where the male applicant tragically died during his wife's pregnancy; Natalie also talks about the research conducted by Brilliant Beginnings and University of Cambridge into why people looking for a surrogate often go abroad, which can be found here - https://brilliantbeginnings.co.uk/education-and-awareness/. Natalie invites the listener to get involved with the campaign for law reform in this area at - Surrogacy law reform brilliantbeginnings.co.uk If you would like to buy Andrew's book ‘The law in relation to surrogacy'. Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Alan Parsons worked as assistant engineer on the last two albums by The Beatles and after he qualified as a fully-fledged recording engineer, he went on to work with Paul McCartney and The Hollies among many others. But it was his contribution as engineer on Pink Floyd's classic The Dark Side Of The Moon that really got him world attention. That soon led to striking successes as a producer – notably with Pilot's Magic, John Miles' Highfly and Music and Steve Harley's (Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile. He also produced the hugely successful Year Of The Cat album with Al Stewart and two albums with American prog rock band Ambrosia. In 1975 he met Eric Woolfson who not only became his manager but joined forces with Alan as a songwriting and performing partner for what became known as The Alan Parsons Project and a string of hit albums. Parson's most recent studio release is entitled From the New World and features the classic sounds Parsons has become known for in his impressive career, with progressive, symphonic, and classic rock elements all touched upon on this stunning album. Guest appearances from the likes of renowned guitarist and singer Joe Bonamassa, Tommy Shaw of Styx, vocalist David Pack (Ambrosia), and vocalist James Durbin add wonderful atmosphere to the stunning performances by Alan and his incredible backing band. l disco que vamos a escuchar hoy es ‘The Kick Inside’, algo así como ‘La patada interior’. 'The Kick Inside' y 'Lionheart' ambos aparecidos en 1978.

The turn of a friendly card. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message

Episode 31 Electronic Literature The Marriage of Electronic Music, Poetry, and Literature Playlist Luciano Berio, "Thema (Omaggio A Joyce)," from Orient-Occident/Momenti-Omaggio A Joyce/Continuo/Transition 1 (1967 Philips). Composed by Luciano Berio at the RAI studio in Milan. Vocals, Cathy Berberian. The piece dates from 1958-59. An exploration of editing and tape composition with the voice as a key source of audio material. This is an interpretative reading of the poem "Sirens" from chapter 11 of the novel Ulysses by James Joyce. This release on the Philips Prospective 21e Siècle is shorter than the one released around the same time on the Turnabout label in America. It omits the spoken sequence at the beginning where Berberian recites the words prior to them being manipulated on tape. John Cage/David Tudor, "Side 3" excerpt from Indeterminacy: New Aspect of Form in Instrumental And Electronic Music (1959 Folkways). John Cage reads previously prepared stories and anecdotes, David Tudor performs electronic music at the same time with no Earthly connection between the two. This was a long-standing performance practice of theirs and I saw them do this several times. John Cage, "Part One (To Line 220)" from Roaratorio: An Irish Circus On Finnegans Wake (1992 Mode), excerpt, for speaker, Irish musicians and 62-track tape. Speaker, John Cage. Production: WDR, Köln; Süddeutscher Rundfunk, Stuttgart; Katholieke Radio Omroep, Hilversum; Technical cooperation: IRCAM, Paris. First transmission: 22 October 1979, WDR3-Hörspielstudio. This score is a means for translating any book into a performance without actors, a performance which is both literary and musical or one or the other. In this case, the book was Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. The text of Roaratorio was published separately as Writing for the Second Time Through Finnegans Wake. This was part of the evolution of Cage's interest in creating works of text for performance with music and other activities. It further evolved into his use of texts by Henry David Thoreau for which he used chance processes to derive a text for solo vocal performance. Shakespeare, excerpt, (1962 Odhams Books Ltd.). BBC radioplay production with musique concrète by Desmond Leslie. King Henry is played by Richard Burton. Electronic music provided on tape for a set of Shakespeare play productions. This short. 2 and a half-minute segment is from Act IV, Scene 3 and gives you an idea of how the sound effects was joined with the dialog. This was a common outlet for electronic music in the UK. Shackleton, “Music For The Quiet Hour, Part 2,” excerpt, from Music For The Quiet Hour (2012 Woe To The Septic Heart!). Vocals, words (poetry), Vengeance Tenfold; Composer, producer, A. Gerth, K. Biswas, Sam Shackleton. A collaboration between producer Shackleton and vocalist Vengeance Tenfold. Beats, bass and rhythm patterns provide a backdrop for some stark poetry. This is a portion of a longer work that whose overall length is about an hour. Lily Greenham, “Traffic” from Lingual Music (2007 Paradigm Discs). Reissue of text-sound works made by Danish concrete poet Lily Greenham, probably between 1972-75. Hugh Davies is credited with assisting on the electronics for this work. Voice: Lily Greenham. Anne Clark, "Swimming" and "An Ordinary Life" from The Sitting Room (1982 Red Flame). Clark is a foremost British poet who fuses her texts with electronic music. This was the first of her albums. Words, Keyboards, Electronic Percussion, Water Percussion, Anne Clark; Guitar, Effects, Voice, Gary Mundy; Keyboards, Domonic Appleton, Patrik Fitzgerald; Keyboards, Electronic Percussion, Andrea Laschetti. Rick Wakeman, “The Journey,” excerpt, from Journey to the Center of the Earth (1974 A&M). Recorded in concert at The Royal Festival Hall London on Friday January 18th 1974. The Harmony Vocoder heard on "The Raven" was invented and built by EMI Central Research Laboratories.Keyboards, Alan Parsons, Andrew Powell, Billy Lyall, Christopher North, Eric Woolfson, Francis Monkman; Composed by Alan Parsons, Andrew Powell, and Eric Woolfson. Silver Apples, "Dust" from Silver Apples (1968 Kapp). "INSTRUCTIONS: Play Twice Before Listening." John Hill, "Europa" from Six Moons Of Jupiter (2009 Finders Keepers). Recorded at Sigma Sound, Philadelphia, January-August 1970, but I don't think it was ever released. Uses a Moog Modular synthesizer programmed by Walter Sear. Composed, arranged produced, Moog Modular Synthesizer, Guitar, Bass, Flute, Recorder, Hammond organ, John Hill; Drums, Percussion, Jimmy Valerio; Performer (Poetry), Susan Christie; poetry, Ian Michaels. Ruth White, "The Clock," "Evening Harmony," "Lover's Wine," Owls," from Flowers of Evil (1969, Limelight). Composer, vocals, electronics (Moog Synthesizer), Ruth White; based on poetry by Charles Baudelaire, translated by Ruth White. Fantastic music from this singular composer who owned a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Her other music was often composed for media, television, and children's records. Archive Mix In which I play two records at the same time to see what happens. The recordings were: Lily Greenham, “ABC in Sound” from Lingual Music (1968/2007 Paradigm Discs). Zoom meetings, Slack conversations and Microsoft Teams have allowed us to continue to make progress in the Covid-19 era. They aren't new tools, but their usage has become more the rule than the exception. They have allowed us to continue to build our work relationships and maintain momentum. But for those starting a new job, those tools are being relied on to create relationships where no momentum yet exists. This has been interesting at a OST, where we thrive on kitchen conversations and hallway hellos. On this episode, Andrew Powell interviews Tori Dean, OST's Talent Experience Consultant and 2020 hire to the Configuration Services team, Sabrina Brooks.Tori and Sabrina discuss remote onboarding from both perspectives and hypothesize what the future may bring for hiring and remote connection. Enjoy!
A zombie, while decidedly undead is certainly not alive. As we come off the Halloween season, we wanted to point out another kind of undead, yet not alive being: the IoT Zombie. On this episode, Andrew Powell interviews two of our connected product experts: Aaron Kamphuis and Jen Nowlin. Jen has been in IoT for 20 years, before it was really a ‘thing’ and is now a Principal Consultant at OST helping our clients guide their connected products efforts. Aaron is a Ten Thousand Feet veteran guest and the IoT Practice Manager at OST. We talk with them about how 60-70% companies consider their IoT projects unsuccessful, many of them falling into zombie territory, where they’re collecting data but not actually becoming smart. We discuss this trend and some ways forward if you find yourself in IoT Zombie territory. Enjoy!

During the global recession of 2007 & 2008, Apple launched the iPhone and Netflix began their streaming services - two formative technologies of our lifetime that would go on to reshape our lives. As we move forward through this pandemic, companies are looking to harness that same creativity to innovate. A couple months ago, OST hosted a roundtable discussing how businesses can actually thrive in a time of uncertainty. On this episode of Ten Thousand Feet, Principal Consultant, Todd Jacobs and Practice Lead, Andrew Powell discuss this topic and why now is the perfect time to innovate. Enjoy!

Andrew Powell is Group CEO of route2work. After 11 years in the British Army, including a stint in Special Forces, he worked in consulting and business operations, before moving full-time into coaching and mentoring. He was a director of The Training Room for six years before founding route2work, a digital education, qualification and careers provider with an emphasis on social impact. Andrew also lends his experience and perspective to the Bank of England’s Decision Maker Panel. In this in-depth conversation, he talks about translating the drive and discipline he learned in the Army to a business environment, explains how he’s worked to create an entire “digital ecosystem” in which route2work can match people’s talents and training with career opportunities, and emphasises how important he’s found it to create “down time” in a busy leadership role to be with his family and away from the demands of email and phone calls.
A couple months ago, working remote was a perk. While definitely gaining momentum, it was still considered a luxury for most companies...one that they hadn't totally figured out how to support at scale. But, times changed. Elizabeth is interviewed by Andrew Powell, OST's Application Development Practice Manager, who is far from a stranger when it comes to helping remote teams work together. Be well and please reach out if we can help you navigate these weird times. Enjoy!

We finally tackle the collaborative effort of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman...Good Omens. My guests this time include Byron Hatfield, Rob Shumate, Zach Muhn, and Peter Foos. We have two outcasts for this discussion....myself (whom has never read the book) and Pete Navis....whom doesn't think very highly of it. Needless to say, our discussion turns into passionate defensive of the novel and its writers as we dissect this benchmark book. We discuss which parts of the story best represent each writer....and what makes the story stand the test of time. We chat about what was gained in the translation to television...and what was lost. Is this the best work of each author? We discuss all this and much more! Music Selections from Good Omens and Ladyhawke, composed by David Arnold and Andrew Powell respectively, owned by Amazon and La La Land Records and are included under fair use protection.

Have you ever spent a bunch of time and money building an MVP for your product and it still falls flat with customers? What if you could test out those assumptions before you even build an MVP? You can - it's called the Riskiest Assumption Test. For short, we call it a RAT (which Jim loves to say) and it's a usually quick, usually inexpensive way to test if the things you think are true about your product are actually true. On this episode, we talk about this with OST's CIO and Frequent Ten Thousand Feet Guest, Jim VanderMey. Jim is interviewed by Application Development Practice Manager, Andrew Powell. Like they say - there are no truths inside the building - only opinions. The RAT allows you to get out there and see what's actually true for your customers before you invest serious resources. Jim gives some great examples of Riskiest Assumption Tests that will get you thinking. Enjoy!
You spend countless hours shaping your idea, interviewing customers, securing funding and resources, making financial models and perfecting your product. But understandably by the time it comes to communicate what you've built to the rest of your organization and stakeholders, you may have run out of steam. So you document the product in a Powerpoint deck and send off an email. And then...crickets. On this episode, Design Director, Brian Hauch, shares some thoughts around how communication is really the last mile of innovation and could use some intention as you release your product inside of your organization. Brian is interviewed by Andrew Powell, OST's Application Development Practice Manager - a man of many talents and interests that we'll dig into at some point. Enjoy!
