Measuring and Managing Microplastics with Dr. Stephanie Wright

Research Fellow at Imperial College London, Dr. Stephanie Wright, shares the expertise she's gained over the course of nearly a decade researching the biological and environmental impacts of microplastic pollution. Press play to learn: How up to 90% of household synthetic fibers may end up as soil conditioner to agricultural fields By what chemical and physical mechanisms plastics turn into microplastics Approximately how many microplastic particles we are exposed to on a daily basis through diet Where does that plastic soda bottle you're drinking from end up? How does the mere friction produced by your movement release synthetic clothing fibers into the environment, and where do those end up? What are “microplastic sinks” and where are they found? These are just a few of the questions explored by Dr. Wright, who's been fascinated by marine biology since the early days of undergraduate school. Offer: CBDfx products are formulated to boost overall wellness and deliver calm vibes for daytime and nighttime use. CBDfx uses only organically grown hemp and all-natural ingredients. At the time, she was doing lab-based research on the impact of microplastic ingestion by marine worms. The findings showed negative effects, including less feeding and a compromised ability to store energy. What might this suggest about the impact of microplastic pollution in the marine environment and on other species? Her current area of research is on human exposure to and human health effects of airborne microplastic pollution, which she says requires a strong focus on analytical techniques since the particles of interest are on the micron scale. These particles can enter the central airway and lower lung, and part of her research aims to identify evidence of this internal exposure and better understand how microplastics affect human cells of the airway. Are microplastics even toxic, and if so, what exactly makes them toxic? What are some potential microplastics pollution solutions and reduction strategies? Human and Environmental Health: Pummeled By Plastics and the Chemicals Within Them—Martin Wagner

Environmental toxicologist Martin Wagner joins the show today to discuss the effect of plastics and other endocrine-disrupting agents on human health and the ecosystem at large. In this episode, you will learn: Roughly how many compounds have been detected in many plastic products, and what percentage of those compounds are actually identifiable What one of the main challenges is in determining which chemicals are leachable and therefore potentially dangerous to humans How to begin making steps toward the development of plastics that are less threatening to human and environmental health Wagner began studying plastics while obtaining his PhD, and has since focused largely on trying to determine what compounds exist in the products we consume, how those compounds function, and what effect they have on human and environmental health. Many of these chemicals are known to disturb hormone signaling in the body, which can lead to all types of ailments. buy furosemide online buy furosemide over the counter online pharmacyDespite this, they have become “almost invisible to us because they are just so pervasive in our everyday life,” says Wagner. Following his PhD studies, Wagner began focusing on an area of research where he saw a void: while most researchers were looking at marine plastic pollution, Wagner wanted to look at microplastic and nanoplastic pollution on freshwater systems like lakes and rivers. He discusses the details of past and recent studies in the field, what it means for a plastic product to have a certain dispersion factor and why this is significant, what items are found most often on European beaches and what's being done about it, surprising sources of plastic pollution, why recycling only works well for a few types of plastic, and more. Vitract's mission is to reverse chronic illnesses that are strongly tied to the gut, including digestive, metabolic and mental illnesses. Learn how Vitract is accomplishing its mission by building the most advanced and comprehensive at-home gut test that decodes the gut microbiome. In this episode you'll discover: Over 60% of Americans have at least one gut-related issue. Digestive, metabolic, and mental illnesses can all be tied back to the patient's gut. These problems all systematically connect to dysbiosis within the gut microbiome. How hidden in the walls of the digestive system, our “second brain” is revolutionizing medicine's understanding of the links between digestion, mood, health and even the way we think. The NIH funded almost $1 billion to research regarding the gut microbiome. Vitract's mission is to use that research and make it an actionable lens in healthcare. How Vitract's unique insights will enable alternative care providers to deliver highly personalized nutrition recommendations and high quality care for patients with chronic illnesses. Why Vitract targets providers, and the importance of testing multiple channels in at-home testing solutions in a crowded consumer health and wellness market. Quotables“I think this is a pain point not only for providers but patients too; how siloed we treat each condition patients are experiencing. So, it's really interesting that nearly 70% of children diagnosed with Autism have a diagnosis of IBD as well. But, what that looks like is a whole different set of doctors and different care teams that don't talk to each other, and that pain is deeply felt in the consumer journey and that's one of the reasons why I started Vitract.”@linta_mm #Vitract on Ep27 @T-minus10 w/ @trfitzpatrick “When you look at the spectrum of alternative care providers, you have naturopaths, functional medicine doctors, dietitians, and they are all kind of playing detective. They are trying to look at the body as a whole and trying to figure out how they can best treat their patients. So the more information you can equip them with, the easier you make their job. When your compensation is tied directly to billable hours, you are inching close to burnout by default. Everything from medical compensation, insurance reimbursement models, licensing restrictions, lack of interoperability, siloed patient information, and lack of communication between care providers is causing frustration that's DRIVING the wellness market. Often investors and founders struggle to grasp the breadth of solutions/their impact and place in the medical system if they're straddling the line between medical care and wellness. The at-home testing market is a great example of that. Industry trends show us that we are headed towards a convergence and interconnectivity between what is now viewed as separate fields. In my opinion, if you're building in health tech, its worthwhile to consider how your solution leverages this industry transformation. “ @Linta Mustafa on LinkedInAbout Your HostTim Fitzpatrick is the CEO of IKONA Health, a company using neurobiology and immersive technology to improve how patients learn about their care and treatment options. What is knowledge?    Who decides what is knowledge?    Or, on a more frightening note, what is truth?   We see this game being played out on many fronts on the planet at this very moment. During this season of Quantum Revolution, we heard stories from leading-edge scientists who are caught up in the reality of having to work around the system to share their research with the world.   In the next few episodes, you're going to hear information and conversations that might challenge you on many levels.      Today's guest challenged me to really hear someone else's truth even though some of it is in direct conflict with mine.      There is a separate set of questions we also have to ask ourselves - especially during this time on the planet. If truth is malleable, who is right?  What are the absolute truths and values that you choose to live by?   What if, together, we can find the solutions to the challenges facing humanity today - even if, individually, we are quite different?     Richard Jacobs is the co-author of the Finding Genius book series and the creator of the Finding Genius Podcast. Richard Jacobs indulged his fascination with technology by starting the  Finding Genius Podcast  (https://www.findinggeniuspodcast.com/). He didn't know that it would end up taking him into hundreds of specialties in science, technology, and medicine. His book, Finding Genius: Understanding Viruses: 30 Questions, 25 Geniuses, 100 Amazing Insights (https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Genius-Understanding-Questions-Geniuses-ebook/dp/B08WBW7JNT) is the result of 30+ interviews of genius-level science professionals.   Rich's thousands of conversations with gifted scientists shows how much promising work is going on right now that risks being starved of the funding, visibility, and other support it needs to thrive, often due to politics and conflicts of interest. However, there is only so much one person can achieve on his own. That is why Rich set up the Finding Genius Foundation (https://www.findinggeniusfoundation.org/ ) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – to support this breakthrough work in a way that is sustainable.   I'm Karen Curry Parker.  If you'd like to explore the truth about who you are and why you're here on the planet at this time, please visit www.quantumalignmentsystem.com. “Tumors are kind of like deposits, where the body can store up excess amounts of phosphorus,” says Dr. Ronald Brown. In this continuation of the Finding Genius cancer disease series, he discusses his unconventional and exciting theory on what causes tumor cells to proliferate. Listen and learn Why, because phosphate promotes growth, its excess promotes tumorigenesis, much like fertilizer runoff leads to dangerous algal blooms in water, Why this differs from conventional theories about tumorigenesis, and How this translates into techniques for cancer prevention and cancer therapy treatment through methods like low phosphorus, healthy diets. Ronald B. Brown's PhD in industrial organizational psychology lends him a unique view of cancer research. In particular, he utilized grounded theory to note the significance of phosphate toxicity and cancer spread, and has continued this work with research partner Mohammed Razzaque. He explains that if we get too much phosphate, our kidneys can't regulate it and it will start accumulating in our body. It's acidic quality means that accumulation can cause what's called phosphate toxicity, which in turn can affect every bodily organ. He explains how this phosphate excess causes cancer cells by explaining the solid characteristics of tumor cells. He adds that tumors and phosphate form “a reciprocal relationship. The phosphorus stimulates the growth and the growth helps to sequester the phosphorus and keep it out of the circulation.” In other words, tumors are our bodies' way of storing too much phosphorus. He ties this to possible cancer prevention and early detection programs that could help patients integrate low phosphorus diets and appropriate lifestyle changes that boost immune cells. Listen in for more about phosphate's effects on organs, calcium, bone density, and cellular overgrowth. Episode also available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/30PvU9C

"Here you have to look for ants, but in the rainforest, they find you," says Professor McGlynn, as he describes his efforts to make it to a Costa Rican field house for research on ants. He tells listeners about some of the fascinating ant behaviors he discovers there as Finding Genius continues investigating the ecological roles of insects. Listen and learn What tools of entomology and forensics he practices to find out more about ant habitats, such as why one species changes nests every few days; What interesting ant facts reveal themselves through ecological roles and interactions; and What questions ant scientists investigate regarding types of ants in the desert as climate change insures their homes will be the hottest on our planet. Ecologist, entomologist, and science policy communicator Terry McGlynn is a professor of biology and the director of undergraduate research at California State University—Dominguez Hills. As a colleague once described, he studies the "experimental natural history" of ant species. Listeners are treated to delightful details such as the leafcutter's agricultural efforts and the curious case of the rotating nests of one species. He also describes the predatory habits of army ants and the sting of the bullet ants. Most of his research takes place at a field house in Costa Rica that has been in place since the '60s. We are able to get a tour of how such field houses function and cater to different scientists from all over the world. It happens to be prime ant location, and one researcher has identified at least 427 different ant species in the surrounding rainforest. In fact, ants play a role in almost every ecological system in the forest, from eating and protecting plants, to turning over and cycling the soil and dispersing seeds. They have several tricks of their own, including the ability to fixate nitrogen sources for their own use. These essential roles are one reason Professor McGlynn is turning solid attention toward understanding how climate change may affect ants, and desert species in particular. Paul Turner gives listeners a gift in this podcast with his clear yet complex exploration of viruses and immune system interactions. As he addresses Richard's questions in this continuation of Finding Genius's virus series, he allows for speculation yet also provides what evidence tells scientists. This perfect combination makes for an entertaining and enriching conversation. Listeners will hear A description of one of his favorite viral entry mechanisms—a bacteriophage that uses pili to its advantage for fusion, His take on infectious viruses' ability to sense, which leads to an amazing description of a two-part binding system, and Other fantastical ways viruses participate in Darwin's model of traits evolving over time. Paul Turner is the Rachel Carson Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the Yale School of Medicine. He specializes in how viruses evolutionarily adapt as infectious diseases and also focuses on the potential of phage therapy as one of several public health intervention strategies. As he answers Richard's questions, listeners are in for a treat as his professorial skill at explaining combines with his own enthusiasm for the mechanisms viruses engage. He offers interesting examples to illustrate every answer, such as a bacteriophage that acts more like an animal virus with an envelope that fuses to a bacterial cell as its pili contract.  As he addresses the question of viruses working together, he describes the ability of viral mechanisms to overwhelm the system; while a division of labor in viruses would be impressive, their capacity to overwhelm may be derived more from their variety and survival mechanisms. While division of labor is a part of cellular evolution, he says, and that's why multi cellularity is successful, do you viruses need that capability to be successful? He comments that we tend to valuate success as humans in limited ways and viruses are one of the most successful things on the planet. He also discusses his belief that viruses are alive, why long-term latency works in a virus like HIV, and the mechanism in viral spread that resets the configuration, constraining mutations between organisms more than we think. Cancer Evolution and the Immune System: Perry Marshall Discusses Upcoming Symposium

Finding Genius Podcast

This is a unique show in the Finding Genius series. Podcast founder and host Richard Jacobs sites Perry Marshall's ideas as the impetus for starting the Finding Genius podcast. In this discussion listeners can learn more about why and hear about an upcoming symposium Marshall has helped construct on cancer and evolutionary biology. He explains What the basic ideas of his book Evolution 2.0 are, namely an argument for a new model for evolution that better fits organisms' active adaptations; How cancer is evolution gone wild and why better cancer treatment necessitates adopting this new conception of evolution; and Which topics and speakers will appear in the Cancer and Evolution Symposium and a preview of several exciting findings they will present. Perry Marshall is an author and highly influential business consultant with an electrical engineering background. In this discussion, he connects the foundational ideas in Evolution 2.0 with cutting-edge cancer science. Marshall lost his father to cancer at age 17 and has followed theories behind its treatment ever since. He reminds listeners that common cancer therapy treatment only works routinely with early stage cancer. Alternatively, he says that when cancer reaches stages 3 and 4, survival chances are not that much better than they were in 1930. Therefore, there must be a lag in how we are addressing serious cancer diagnoses. This lag is connected with a traditional view of passive evolutionary theory rather than theories like that of Professor Henry Heng, who claims evolution is actively engineered by organisms themselves; in addition, they are able to pass those engineered traits to their offspring.  Henry Heng is one of the speakers at the upcoming Cancer and Evolution Symposium along with Columbia University Medical Center's Azra Raza and evolutionary theorist James Shapiro from the University of Chicago. Dr. Heng connects this theory of evolution and cancer, noting that treatments like chemo destroy about 98% of the cancer cells while the few remaining develop massive wholesale restructuring of their DNA and are then more equipped to spread and survive. Importantly, this restructuring is active rather than a random accident of mutations.  Marshall explains these ideas in more detail and discusses other topics covered by the speakers. He describes the symposium as a world-class collection of cancer and evolutionary theorists coming together to address cancer evolution and disable the cancer treatment lag. The symposium will work via Zoom and takes place October 14th through 16th. To sign up and learn more, see the symposium website:  cancerevolution.org. Available on Apple Podcasts: apple.co/2Os0myK

Okay — a lot of awesomeness this week. But I'll tell you, it's really hard coming back juggling work and responsibilities after spending an entire week at a mindfulness center focusing on building long-term mindfulness practices.    I don't like vacations because I don't have a life I want to vacate from. I have a life I want to enhance, so throughout the year I invest in myself to learn about something new, whether that's a new skill or a deep practice.   Spending a week focusing on mindfulness helps me practice mindfulness in my daily life. That doesn't mean it's easy, but what it does is it gives me a reflecting diving board. It forces me to readjust and think anew about what's important and reprioritize my life.   It forces me to really think about how I'm spending my time. It always gets me to really think about what words am I choosing to say and what actions I choose to act upon.    So, this week reflects a few of the thoughts that have been on my mind since coming back from Blue Spirit in Costa Rica.    1. Wasting Time   It's incredible to me how time works. Some moments in our lives are as quick as a gust of air and other moments can freeze in place for a lifetime.    Joseph Campbell reminds us that we must give up the life we have planned in order to experience the life that is waiting for us.   So, as I look at my life plan and see my dream board that's posted on my office wall, I need to realize that those destinations are not nearly as important as the journey I'm on right now.   And if they don't come true, that's okay. Because something far greater could come true, something beyond what we could even imagine right now.   2. Mindful Writing   I've identified three writing prompts that could help one be more mindful.  It helps a person discover their surrounding and often sparks beautiful creativity.   1. The Beat Word Sketch   Call upon your inner Miles Davis and write with a jazz beat that quickly takes in your surrounding and describes your sensory experience.    2. Focus Freewrite    - Choose a prompting question and then run with it, then train the brain to recognize when the mind has wandered of it's focus.   3. Straight up journaling that may just be what Anne Lamott calls your shitty first draft. It's just catharsis splattered with ink. Kind of like if Oprah and Jackson Pollock were to have made a painting.   3. Your Unfair Advantage   My buddy Scott does a great job of breaking down the six traits to find your unfair advantage.     Experience Skill Tallent Knowledge Character Connections   Finding your unfair advantage is not so much about taking advantage of people, but rather the unique gift that you can offer which no one else in the world can.   It's your art and it's freaking beautiful. Let it shine.   4, Finding Genius    We're all geniuses in some way, but not everyone finds it.   To find it, you need to look beyond what the classroom and school typically asked of you. Genius isn't about memorizing data or performing a task faster than everyone else. It's not found in a test.     Genius, on the other hand, can be broken down into two separate tracks Genius 1 is better, stronger, or faster than anyone else and Genius 2 thinks so differently that society can't do anything else but turn their heads in awe.

I just came back in from kayaking on the Hudson River and would like to share with you a few of my thoughts while out there. Like I often do, I thought about Einstein. He once said,   “If you ask a fish to climb a tree, he'll spend his whole life believing he's an idiot.” Einstein is spot on, but unless someone reads this quote or hears it from someone else, he more than likely will never know he's a genius. We're all geniuses in some way, but not everyone finds it. To find it, you need to look beyond what the classroom and school typically asked of you. Genius isn't about memorizing data or performing a task faster than everyone else. It's not found in a test. Genius, on the other hand, can be broken down into two separate tracks. There are geniuses like Daniel Tammet, the autistic savant who can master a language in just weeks, and then there are geniuses like Steve Jobs and Steve Woznisk who think conceptually and are so creative that they turn the box society stays confined in into a soccer ball for a game. Genius 1 is better, stronger, or faster than anyone else and Genius 2 thinks so differently that society can't do anything else but turn their heads in awe.   I learned two key lessons about finding your genius: Lesson #1: Never Settle and Level Up with Community   Mario Armstrong, the head tech guru you see on The Today Show shared with me his latest work in motivating people to find their genius. He calls his group, the #NeverSettleClub and he's touring the nation motivating millennials to break out of the shell they are living in and live their life to the fullest.   After being a part of major broadcasting companies for years, including The Today Show, Mario shared with me that one key difference between the most successful people and those who settle with less is willpower and community. The most successful people have incredible willpower, but they also have a community that supports and nurtures them to do more, be more, and live remarkably.   (That's why I'd be honored for you to join our community of change makers at yourlop.com.   Lesson #2: Get Ninja Focused and Grow Some Grit   To find your genius  you need to dig deep and be more micro niche than ever before. You see this problem with so many children. It's so easy to start something, but hard to follow through and continue.   Kids pick up a new instrument or play a new sport when the going gets tough. Instead of pushing through to mastery, it's way easier to just move on to something else.   Now let me be clear — this is a major struggle of mine. I like being a jack of all trades, but know that I need to push through to focus and achieve mastery.   That's why I keep writing. Writing is never easy for me, though I always feel great after writing an article. I'm not a master at writing, but I've learned the value of pushing through and learning the intricacies of how to construct prose.   It's help lead me to write for large media sites like The Huffington Post and Elephant Journal and you could do the same.   I'm not the best writer out there, but I'm consistent. And I deliver.   I push through.    The same goes for training your body for performance or just to get in really good shape. It's not too hard to get in mediocre mental and physical health. But it requires focus, a dedicated meditation practice, and efficient physical efforts to achieve ninja-like health and awareness.     So, What's so beautiful about your unique story and so deeply embedded in your passion that no one else could even fathom focusing on for a long stretch?
