Jameson Reeder Jr. is a shark attack survivor, amputee, surfer, and one of the most courageous young men I've ever spoken with. At just 10 years old, Jameson was attacked by a 9-foot bull shark while snorkeling in the Florida Keys. What followed was a miraculous chain of events involving strangers, a nurse who swam through shark-infested waters, a faster boat, and a powerful spiritual encounter that Jameson says saved his life. He and his father Jamon recount the entire journey in their new book, Rescue at the Reef. In this conversation, we talk about trauma, faith, family, facing your fears, and how this young man chose purpose over fear—and joy over bitterness. Some of the moments I found most meaningful in this conversation were: The unbelievable moment Jameson said, “Jesus is going to save me,” moments after losing his leg Jamon's impossible decision to hand off his son to a stranger on a faster boat Jameson's vision of Jesus and the peace that carried him through the ride back The family's return to the reef just weeks later to reclaim joy and face fear How Jameson now comforts others with trauma, proving strength can come in small packages Timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 01:10 Reeder family roots in the Keys 06:45 The day of the shark attack 15:00 The miracle rescue unfolds 22:45 Jameson's spiritual experience on the boat 28:00 Hospital, trauma, and family response 35:15 Returning to the reef & keys that unlock fear 46:50 Speaking to others with trauma 54:40 Surfing, fishing, and shark advocacy 1:06:15 Finding purpose and what's next for Jameson
As adolescent introductions to motorcycling go, author and podcaster Ted Kettler's first two-wheel experience probably isn't unique. But, as he tells host Mark Long on this episode of the “Driven to Ride” podcast, that moment in time more than half a century ago left an indelible mark on his consciousness—in the shape of Harley-Davidson's iconic bar-and-shield logo, no less.“I can remember standing on the front seat of my mother's car,” he laughs. “We were at a traffic light and a motorcycle pulled up in the lane next to us. I said, “Wow! What's that?” And my mother said, “That's a Harley-Davidson.” I remember it was turquoise and white. Then, the light turned green and he took off. From that moment on, I was all about Harley-Davidson.”Kettler has hosted the “Motorcycle Men Podcast” for a decade, and in 2024, he published, “The Road Most Traveled: A Motorcycle Ride Along the East Coast of America.” Whereas most riders seek out the best back roads, Kettler set off on his trip with the polar-opposite intention: to follow the busiest highways, from the northeast to the Florida Keys. Amoray Dive Resort is considered the only true dive resort in the continental US, with it's dedicated dive boat literally outside the door of some of the hotel rooms.I fell in love with this dive resort last year when I visited, so I returned a year later to interview the rest of their staff. With a fully staffed dive shop on site, gear, and even a filling station, it makes diving easy.I was asked so many times if this was “Amy Slate's place?” that I thought it was important to show the renovated room interiors, and how well-kept the place was. They retained the old Keys charm, but upgraded the interior where it counts. The boat is ideal for easy, family-oriented diving that caters to newbies, snorkelers, and shallow scuba diving. But don't be fooled, some of the best variety of shipwrecks are in the Keys and the Spiegel Grove is just offshore Key Largo, and Amoray does do dedicated trips for Advanced Divers. They offer scuba certification, dive guides, rental gear, and apparently are expanding into a live aboard catamaran option (I'll have more details on that when I return in December for the boat parade!). I should also mention they let you take bicycles and snorkel gear offsite to places like John Pennekamp State Park, and even have SUP, Kayak, Jet Skis on site. They also do magical sunset cruises, which IMHO is one of the crown jewels of the Florida Keys. But the thing that intrigued me the most about this resort was actually the staff. Just like my last interview with the owner of the dive resort (Jeff Gneiser), I am fascinated with how they can keep the vibe going with the resort AND boat staff, and this time after even more time had passed. So many places lack customer service and experience staff burnout in this industry, yet this place seemed to be the contrary. The staff seemed happy, the boat captain and mates literally sang and danced on the way back in from the dive, and everyone was in a great mood every time I spoke with them, and were actually helpful. If you just want a comfy place to stay with a genuine Keys vibe, easy diving or snorkeling, and close to the major attractions, Amoray Dive Resort is it.PS: They offered me a discount code for listeners:sweetwater25*I'm still working on that on-site Tiki Bar

The Florida Keys extend from the state's peninsula like a string of pearls, and pearls they are, in their uniqueness and value. Stands of hardwood trees rise above the islands' level ground. These trees draw many birds of the Caribbean to the keys' tropical habitat. One of these is the White-crowned Pigeon. It's a fruit-eater that eats native figs and the fruit of the poisonwood tree. White-crowns play an important role in spreading seeds. The birds swallow fruits and deposit some of the seeds on the hardwood knolls also called hammocks. Without the pigeons, there might be no tropical hardwood hammocks in the Keys. But without the hammocks, there would be no White-crowned Pigeons in Florida.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Article by Connor Yeck Plunge into the shallows off the Florida Keys, Hawaii or the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and you are likely to meet a startling sight. Where there were once acres of dazzling coral - an underwater world of dayglo greens, brassy yellows and midnight blues - is now a ghostly landscape, with many reefs seemingly drained of their pigment. Caused by stressful conditions like warming ocean temperatures, coral bleaching is a leading threat to some of our planet's most diverse and vital ecosystems. Now, a team of researchers has found that some corals survive warming ocean temperatures by passing heat-resisting abilities on to their offspring. Corals teach their offspring to beat the heat The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, are the result of a collaboration between Michigan State University, Duke University and the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, or HIMB, at the University of Hawaii at Mnoa. This work, funded by the National Science Foundation and a Michigan State University Climate Change Research grant, is crucial in the race to better conserve and restore threatened reefs across the globe. Coral reefs are habitats for nearly a quarter of all marine life, protecting coastlines from storms and erosion and supporting the livelihoods of millions of people around the world. Though still alive, bleached corals are at a much higher risk of disease, starvation and eventual mortality. In their latest study, the team explored how resistance to thermal stress is passed down from parent to offspring in an important reef-building species known as rice coral. These findings are helping researchers breed stronger, heat-tolerant generations to better face environmental stress. "The Coral Resilience Lab in Hawaii has developed amazing methods to breed and rear corals during natural summer spawning," said Spartan biochemist and study co-author Rob Quinn, whose lab takes samples of these corals and generates massive datasets on their biochemistry with instruments at MSU. "This is a true scientific collaboration that can support coral breeding and reproduction to cultivate more resilient corals for the warming oceans of the future." A colorful crowd The kaleidoscopic of shades we associate with healthy coral is the product of a bustling exchange of resources between a coral animal and its algae partners. When all is well, you might think of this relationship as that of tenants living in a home and paying a bit of rent. In exchange for cozy, sheltered spaces found within the coral tissue as well as nutrients, algae use photosynthesis to produce sugars. These sugars can provide up to 95% of the energy that coral needs to grow and form the sprawling, breathtaking reefs we know. In tropical waters often lacking nutrients, disruptions in this exchange - like those that occur during bleaching events - can be disastrous. When looking at a specimen of coral that's suffered bleaching, you're glimpsing a coral that's "kicked out" its algae, leaving behind a pale skeleton. "Corals are like the trees in an old growth forest; they build the ecosystems we know as reefs on the energetic foundation between the animal and algae," explained Crawford Drury, an assistant researcher at the Coral Resilience Lab at HIMB and co-author of the study. In the waters of Kaneohe Bay, the Coral Resilience Lab is spearheading research to best understand this coral reef ecology and the molecular mechanisms driving thermal stress. The lab is likewise pioneering the breeding of thermally resistant coral for experiments and the restoration of reefs, a highly specialized process few labs in the world can achieve. So, while you'd usually be hard pressed to find fresh coral for study in East Lansing, MSU's partnership with the Coral Resilience Lab has led to a globe-spanning collaboration that closes the gap between field and laboratory. "HIMB and MSU have developed a really amazing partnership. I'm just happy they've let me be a ...

Jess and Thom share the story of Sugarloaf Church, an almost deceased church in the Florida Keys. Braydenton McCormick became the lead pastor of the church two years ago. The church was facing insolvency, but last year it reached its budget, even putting away an additional year's worth of funds for rainy days. The church had only seven members, and the pastor's family added five more. The facilities were stale and outdated, but the church had no debt. We will examine ten key ways the church transitioned from near death to hope. In this podcast I want to share an article that I truly consider one of the best I've ever read, for so many reasons. It's a classic from the legendary Captain Peter B. Wright, titled "Things You Need to Know About Seabirds." I find myself re-reading it year after year. Peter, who we lost in 2023, was a titan in the fishing world. His articles were always simple, no fluff, straight to the point. He had opinions, yes, but never in an overbearing way that shamed anyone. Why do I keep coming back to Peter's work? Sadly, guys like him really don't exist anymore, or they've stopped sharing their insights because of the drastic shift in today's fishing culture. And honestly, in today's fishing world, it feels like everyone has a shaming opinion or wants to tell you you're doing it wrong. I'll admit, I've been guilty of that myself in the past. But every single day, I work on not doing that anymore. Peter was the exact opposite. He didn't preach; he taught. He didn't shame; he shared. His approach was always about real-world experience, backed by a scientific mind, focused purely on helping you become a better, more responsible angler. That's why I connect so much with his writing: stop shaming people, educate them, and then let them make their own decisions. There's something profound about reconnecting with the past through these articles. It's like you can now hear them speak to you. When you're truly searching to get better in life, in fishing, or in anything, those voices will connect with you. In this incredible article, Peter, with his signature blend of scientific insight and practical wisdom, dives deep into how seabirds are your ultimate fishing guides. He quotes Captain John Bayliss, one of the best in the business. This episode is packed with invaluable knowledge that will change how you look for fish offshore, all through the lens of one of fishing's true gentlemen. The Omni sonar game-changer that levels the playing field or an edge that's reshaping the sport too much? In this episode of Business Coaching Secrets, host Karl Bryan flies solo and dives into listener questions on how to break through overwhelm, stay focused while building a coaching business, and ensure long-term client retention. Karl shares real-life coaching stories, mindset strategies, and tactical frameworks—including the famous “Florida Keys” treasure analogy—to help coaches gain clarity, set bigger goals, and stop self-sabotaging. He offers advice on eliminating distractions, designing irresistible value for clients, and using powerful frameworks to multiply productivity without burning out. Key Topics Covered Overcoming Overwhelm & Getting Focused Karl tackles the all-too-common struggle of “too many things to do,” revealing how to anchor motivation in long-term, compelling goals rather than day-to-day tasks. He draws on coaching conversations and wisdom from Tony Robbins—encouraging business coaches to design a “ridiculously monstrous, compelling future” that pulls them forward. Creating Powerful Intentions & Eliminating Distractions He unpacks the importance of intentionality over mere activity. Coaches must shift from operating towards their goals to operating from their goals. The size and clarity of your objectives directly shape your daily discipline—and whether your long-term or short-term self wins the daily battles. The Florida Keys Story – Belief, Tenacity & Worthiness Karl shares the Mel Fisher treasure-hunt parable: most coaches (and business owners) ask three core questions—Is it there? Am I the one to succeed? Will it be worth it?—and only those resolutely answering “Yes” endure setbacks to ultimately win. How to Add Real Value & Extend Client Retention Instead of just “adding more” (calls, homework, videos), Karl recommends focusing on distinctions—needle-moving insights and frameworks that compound results. He explains the Jumpstart 12 system, offers call-structure hacks (including shorter, more focused sessions), and reminds coaches that keeping clients isn't about time, but about tangible profit acceleration. Mindset Mastery: Embracing Suffering & Building Wisdom Karl's Zen lesson: suffering is the path to greatness, not something to be avoided. The willingness to fail, take imperfect action, and “shed skin” is what separates high performers from those stuck on the sidelines. Notable Quotes “You don't have a client problem, you don't have a money problem, you have a refusal to help people before they pay you problem.” “Operate from your goals, not towards your goals.” “If you have powerful goals, you will have powerful intentions.” “Focus is not focus. The way to get focused is to eliminate distractions, tasks, or even clients.” “Suffering is your path to your greatness. Diamonds are created under insane heat and pressure.” “Small hinges swing big doors—work on the needle-movers, not the busywork.” Actionable Takeaways Dream Bigger and Get Specific: Anchor yourself and your clients to a monstrous, compelling vision of the future—something worth pushing through obstacles for. Eliminate to Accelerate: Focus comes from subtracting tasks, projects, or even problematic clients. Use frameworks like the Jumpstart 12 to guide your priorities. Shorter, Smarter Calls: Switch to 30-minute sessions with supporting videos for maximum impact and efficiency—it's about insights, not meeting length. Serve Before You Sell: Embrace the mindset that your first job is to help—often before payment. This builds trust and long-term relationships. Jamieson, Ted, Wyatt, and Andrew gather around the old oak table once more to tackle some tough topics—like Crocs, educational electrocutions, and other near-death encounters. The crew discusses recent and firsthand experiences with Mosquito Lagoon's low water levels and how they may impact skiff travel. Ted shares stories from a recent tarpon expedition in the Florida Keys, and there's a healthy dose of group “shoe talk.” They also review the day's events, including some pre-fishing ahead of “Larrypalooza” and the meetup at the “Wedding Bar.” Plus, we get a glimpse into Wyatt's origin story and the early days of his fly fishing journey while spending a summer working in Alaska.

It is summer road trip season so it is time to recap some of our best road trip tips from preparing, planning, packing, and more. Plus, we share some of our favorite road trips. Episode Highlights Before you head out on a road trip, make sure your car has been serviced recently and check the tires to make sure the pressure is correct. You may also want to top off your fluids and use the bug windshield washer fluid. Bring a go-to kit with wipes, sanitizer, tissues, lip balm, moisturizer, sun screen, and eye drops. Also bring a couple of extra baggies or ziploc bags. Bring a trash bag for the front and back (or for each kid) and empty the trash at each stop. Bring a small cooler and ice pack that you can refreeze each night for left overs and snacks. Have a specific spot for your snacks that can be refilled when needed. Use a car freshener or car air purifier to help keep food smells away. You may want to consider a AAA membership and bring your card with you. For longer road trips, consider bringing a carry on bag with a duffle bag instead of a larger checked bag. Use a duffle bag to transport what you need in and out each night. It is good to have one overnight bag for toiletries and pajamas for everyone that always goes in. Bring a laundry bag that you can put your dirty clothes in each day in your car or larger suitcase. Plan an overnight stay at a place that has laundry facilities. When choosing where to stay, consider staying just off the highway where you are more likely to find a chain hotel that has free breakfast and free parking (and laundry facilities). Plus it is easy to get on and off the highway. Some of the chains like Best Western have summer promotions for multiple stays. Some apps to have are Gas Buddy, Road Trippers, and of course Google or Apple Maps. Google Maps is also good at showing you how busy attractions are at different times of the day. For road trips in less-populated areas, bring a road atlas or paper maps (you can get free maps at AAA if you are a member) Maine Coast road trip - read the full post here: https://we3travel.com/boston-to-bar-harbor-a-maine-coast-road-trip-itinerary/ Florida Keys road trip - read more here: https://yourtimetofly.com/key-west-girls-trip/ Canadian Rockies road trip - read more here: https://we3travel.com/canadian-rockies-vacation-itinerary/ West Coast road trip - read more here: https://stuffedsuitcase.com/west-coast-road-trip/ Road trip packing list: https://stuffedsuitcase.com/pack-car-road-trip/ Related Episodes West Coast road trip Southwest Grand Circle road trip Oregon Coast road trip California road trip Midwest road trip Family road trip tips

Capt. Eric Herstedt is a seasoned and versatile fishing guide based in Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys, specializing in light tackle and fly fishing. Whether it's spin, bait, plug, artificial, or fly—Eric does it all, and he does it with the best of them. With decades of experience and an unmatched passion for the water, Eric has built a reputation as a top-tier guide known for his skill, adaptability, and commitment to providing unforgettable days on the water.Born in Miami and raised on Long Key in the heart of the Florida Keys, Eric developed a deep connection to the outdoors and the rich fishing grounds surrounding him. By the age of 3, he was already casting a spin rod, and at just 14 years old, he achieved his first Flats Grand Slam—landing a bonefish, permit, and tarpon in a single day. Though spin and plug fishing were his early go-tos, Eric discovered fly fishing at age 9 and quickly embraced its challenges and rewards.Eric's talent and dedication have made him a fixture in the tournament scene. He and Nicky fished the Golden Fly Tarpon Tournament together for nine consecutive years, narrowly missing a victory a couple of times. In 2022, Eric and angler Mike Criscola finished as runners-up in the legendary Gold Cup Tarpon Tournament—further proof of Eric's consistency and sharp instincts under pressure.Beyond the tournaments, Eric has contributed to conservation efforts with Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT), working alongside Capt. Doug Kilpatrick and Dr. Ross Boucek to help establish best practices for handling bonefish safely at the boat.Eric is known not only for his skills on the water but also for his honesty and authenticity—he's a straight shooter who tells it like it is. Whether you're chasing tarpon on fly or just getting your feet wet, Eric is the kind of guide who makes the day memorable. We hope you enjoy getting to know Capt. Eric Herstedt as much as we have.
Capt. Pauly Ross is quickly becoming one of the most respected young guides in the Florida Keys, and for good reason. At just 24 years old, he's already earning a reputation that many seasoned captains spend a lifetime building. Born and raised in Islamorada, Pauly grew up on the deck of the Relentless, the legendary offshore fishing vessel captained by his father, Paul Ross—an icon in the sportfishing world with seven Gold Cup Sailfish Series titles to his name. The Ross family name carries serious weight on the water, and Pauly is honoring that legacy while forging his own path in the backcountry and tarpon arenas. With a quiet confidence and humble nature, Pauly operates with the precision, calm, and instincts of someone twice his age. He's a natural guide—sharp-eyed, tactical, and relentlessly focused on giving his anglers the best possible shot. Pauly's list of accolades is already impressive. He's a multi-time winner of the Poor Boys Tarpon Tournament and a champion of the Herman Lucerne Backcountry Tournament. His name is consistently in the mix during tarpon season, where he's recognized as a serious threat across all the major tournaments. Although, the most amazing accomplishment, I believe, is that he recently caught a super slam (Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Snook, & Redfish) solo on fly in one day! I am not sure anyone has done that to date - but could be wrong. But accolades only tell part of the story. What sets Pauly apart is his work ethic and presence on the water. Whether poling through skinny flats or chasing rolling tarpon at dawn, he brings the same level of preparation, quiet intensity, and deep respect for the sport every day. His guests quickly realize they're fishing with someone special—a guide with both heart and heritage. Capt. Pauly Ross represents the next generation of elite Florida Keys fishing. And if his early success is any indication, he's just getting started.
