If you don't, you're not going to get that habit. If it feels like it's shameful or like you're judging yourself, it's possible that's not your intuition and you're following someone else's. Lesley Logan 0:16  Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:55  Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It interview recap where my co-host in life, Brad, and I are going to dig into the restorative combo I had with Megan Farrell in our last episode. If you haven't yet listened to the episode and you are not new here, you know what to do. If you're brand new here, hi, we're gonna talk about something that already happened, and you can listen. If you're like me, you'd listen to this one and then you listen to the other one. Or you can be like, Brad and pause us now. Brad Crowell 1:23  You do that? Lesley Logan 1:24  Of course. I want, when we watch The Crown, do I not look up the historical facts before we finish?Brad Crowell 1:31  She does. She always looks up the ending. Yeah, I watch it from start to finish.Lesley Logan 1:34  I need, sometimes I get just nervous, and I just need to know how it's going to be, so that I can sit and pay attention. Because sometimes I'm just so nervous for them. They're like, I can't you saw my stress results after watching F1. Brad Crowell 1:47  Yes, I did. Lesley Logan 1:48  So you guys, we saw the F1 movie, and mostly I went for the Brad Pitt part, but my friend said it was just on edge of her seat, and so I looked at my WHOOP and, like, heart rate monitor and you can see from the horror film preview to the end of the movie of the of the F1 you can actually see every time they had a race, because my heart would spike for every race, and I just like, can someone just tell me if he wins this race? So I can just enjoy the race, because I can't enjoy the race right now because I'm so stressed for him. So that's why I like to listen to these kinds of episodes, podcasts, and then I listen to the one.Brad Crowell 1:48  Yeah, yeah, okay.Lesley Logan 1:52  Today is October 2nd, 2025, in case you didin't know, it is the day before our 10th year wedding anniversary. Brad Crowell 2:37  What? Oh, yeah. Lesley Logan 2:39  But it's also the actual day of International Day of Non-Violence. Today, we celebrate the birthday of a man who helped bring forward the notion of non violence and the tremendous impact this form of social response has all over the world in the last century. On the International Day of Non-Violence created by the United Nations in 2007, we look back on the influence of an Indian activist born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, but known the world over as Mahatma Gandhi. The International Day of Non-Violence honors how Gandhi's work and legacy has impacted global non-violent protests. The UN has good reason to use Gandhi's birthday to celebrate International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi's commitment to India's independence and his methods have been the cornerstone of civil and human right initiatives all over the world. Put simply, Gandhi saw it as completely irrational to use violence to achieve peace. But rather just means.Brad Crowell 3:29  But rather, just means lead to just ends.Lesley Logan 3:32  Oh, but rather comma just means lead to just ends. Period. Got it, okay. This is a lesson we can all take to heart. I mean, I completely agree, you know.Brad Crowell 3:43  Yeah, it's, it's amazing that, especially in, you know, when he died in 1940s like late 40s, and his message spread all around the world, which is amazing, because, no, no computers, no email, no social media. Lesley Logan 4:01  Did you ever wonder? But do you wonder, like, would Mahatma Gandhi actually be famous today? Do you know what I mean? Because, like, some of the people we looked to were like, wow, like, would they actually keep the attention of the people who are like, hold on, let me see this kid, like, try lemon for the first time. I just, I just kind of like. Brad Crowell 4:19  Or drink Coke for the first time. Lesley Logan 4:20  Here's my, my faith in humanity's ability to, like, take, take seriously things that are serious is, like, dwindling every day. Lesley Logan 4:34  Yeah. I mean. Lesley Logan 4:35  We don't even know what's happened today when this comes out. I'm telling you, we're recording this in August, so, like, who knows what has happened to people's rights between August and August 2nd because it feels like every day they're trying to take someone's rights, or some city's rights away. We're talking about the U.S.Brad Crowell 4:50  Over the weekend, in the U.S., the federal government deployed troops to 17 cities, or something like that.Lesley Logan 4:57  I think they threatened 17. Brad Crowell 4:57  Or they, like, they we're gonna take, yeah. Lesley Logan 4:58  But by the time this has happened, maybe it's happened, but by the time we're recording this, no. So right now, they're in D.C. and they're threatening to go to Chicago and something else, but, like.Brad Crowell 5:08  They're in L.A. and D.C., yeah. Lesley Logan 5:10  And, you know, like, I just, I mean, it's all control, right? The more they have you scared, the more they have you changing your life, you know, then it's one day you wake up, it's too late, you can't even vote. So keep protesting. Go find a protest. There's a woman who's 104 I think she turned 104 two months ago. She protests every Thursday. Every Thursday. She is 104 she has very few days left on this planet, and she's like, I'm gonna spend one of every seven protesting for people's rights. We are not going to be here. Brad Crowell 5:44  She's not going to be here for them. Lesley Logan 5:45  She's not going to be here, right? Someday she will go. So I'm just saying, you, too.Brad Crowell 5:50  Yeah, but I think also, the thing, you know, like, we've been.Lesley Logan 5:54  By the way, we all boycott Target and look what happened. CEO is gone. So these things work.Brad Crowell 5:58  Well, the point of it is, is not necessarily the, the action of boycotting is important and and like, you know, making your voice heard. But I think that the key here is the non violent part, right? And I'll tell you, it's really challenging when you know the police are out in force or the military is out in force. It's very scary feeling to be in a crowd and, you know, see a clash, and you know that's, that is, we haven't been around like extreme violence, but we've been around like high pressure, like, environments where you're like, oh, if somebody does one thing stupid, this could all blow up. Right? Lesley Logan 6:42  I got really nervous at that one protest because this guy kept taunting the police and I was like, let's just go over here, because, like, it just, he's acting a little crazy. They're going to take it crazier, and then, who knows, but.Brad Crowell 6:55  But that's where I feel like that's why we need to focus on the non-violence, because it's important to make our voices heard. We have to make our voices heard. If we don't do that, then there are people who will make decisions that will that will hurt us, right, as a society and, literally, individually. But how do we do that in a way that doesn't make us exactly like them? Right?Lesley Logan 7:20  Yeah, well, you're going to call your congress person and senator every day. You are going to not pick every single company to boycott. I get it, lifestyle, we gotta do something. You know, we still shop in these places I'm not happy about, but you gotta, like, pick, like, I'm not doing these places or I'm gonna do, we did an FYFwhere I explained how you could, like, boycott in a way that was, like, successful for you and where your life is. You could borrow things. You can also, like, let's say you have a (inaudible), you don't have time to go out on a Saturday to go protest. Okay, great. So then, how can you help promote protests? How can you make sure that everyone you know goes out? Like, how can you do that? And, you know, there's just, there's just, there's always a way, no matter what your situation is. But I get that you're busy and I get that you're tired. I get that you're scared. We don't have time for that. And if you don't listen live in this country, and you're having to listen to us every Thursday talking about this, tell your American friends to get the fuck up and do some action, non-violent action. You know, we gotta do it. You know, it's just so important. And I promise you, you feel better after you do it. Non-violence, to me, does not mean telling people, like yelling what you want to yell out. That's what you could do at a protest. It's quite nice. I find it cathartic. Yeah, oh, I have a fit. We're, did we share this already? So we were at a protest, and there's like some dickhead on his little vape sucky thing, can't even handle, can't handle grown people with, like, a little passy. Anyways, he's like, flipping us off, and the guys next to us are like, oh, I'm gonna pray for you. And he's like, they hate that. And I was like, oh yeah. Thoughts and prayers. So if you have some dickhead, fascist, loving person in your life, you can just be like when they flip you off or they call you some, don't worry, I'll be praying for you. Brad Crowell 9:05  Yeah, thoughts and prayers. thoughts and prayers. Lesley Logan 9:06  Thoughts and prayers for you and your children. Anyways, today. Do you have anything more to say? Lesley Logan 9:12  I know Gandhi is great. Have you watched the movie? Go watch it. If you're like, Gandhi, I haven't thought about in a while. There's a movie about him. I'm sure there's some, I'm sure you can get chatgpt to give you the Cliff Notes as well, you know. But like. Brad Crowell 9:23  It's worth watching. Lesley Logan 9:25  I think it's worth watching. I think it's we, it's nice to learn about. If people think that this is all new, none of, none of what we're going through is new. Brad Crowell 9:33  The same stuff happened in the 60s. I mean, we're we're recycling, we're recycling fascism. I mean, it happened in the 40s and 30s, 20s.Lesley Logan 9:43  And they, and I love this, if we don't learn history, we're doomed to repeat it. People do, do learn history, and they're still repeating it, you know. So it's also, I think a lot of people who think that, like they could never be in a cult, they could never fall for that. They could never understand coercion, because they would never let that happen. And yet, they're also the same, people, very coerced. So, you know, take some time to learn about Gandhi today. And what can you do that's non-violent today to protest what you're pissed off about? Tell us what you decided to do. Tag us in the Be It Pod. We'll share it. We'll share with friends. Lesley Logan 10:15  Today is October 2nd. We are in Chicago, as we speak. We're having a great time with our members, and people came to our workshop, and we'll be at the Balanced Body's Pilates On T our. Brad Crowell 10:25  Yeah, if you are in Chicago, we're going to coordinate members only hang. So you know, if you are, you can come hang. If you're listening this podcast and you're at P.O.T. and you're not a member, just come hang out anyway. We'd love to meet you and hang out with you. Brad Crowell 10:36  And if you're like, where is it? You gotta reach out to us. Just text the company. Brad Crowell 10:42  Yeah, just text us 310-905-5534, text us there and we'll let you know.Lesley Logan 10:45  Supposedly Instagram is just gonna start telling over my location. And last week, it was everyone saying this is how you turn the location things off. And I was like.Brad Crowell 10:57  It seems like a bad idea. Lesley Logan 10:58  I was like, oh, great, then people will know where I am. Like, I don't know. Brad Crowell 11:02  Turn that shit off.Lesley Logan 11:03  Brad, do you know any people go, oh, you live in L.A., right? Like everyone's (inaudible) so it doesn't really matter. Brad Crowell 11:03  No, I think your profile can say Vegas. Lesley Logan 11:03  I know, but every I'm just saying, like, I don't actually know how it works.Brad Crowell 11:13  Maybe if it's general, and you're like, I'm in the city of.Lesley Logan 11:17  I, we told everyone where we are already. So I'm just really not so sure like, how, like, what they're gonna say she's at the movie thing. Like, how specific is it getting? Like, I don't know. Lesley Logan 11:25  Yeah, we'll see. Lesley Logan 11:26  You know what the fucking Earth is on fire. I'm not really worried about this right now. I don't currently have a stalker that is yelling at me. If I do, I'll figure that out. But that's not, that's not the, there's, I'm sure there's VPN for that. Brad Crowell 11:37  That's fair. Lesley Logan 11:38  But after this weekend, we leave for Cambodia for our retreat. And so we want you to join us next October, once you go on the get on the waitlist at crownestretreats.com so go do that.Brad Crowell 11:50  Yeah, come join us in January of next year, we're going to be announcing the early bird special. Lesley Logan 11:56  Yeah, next year's the early bird, October is the retreat. Brad Crowell 11:57  Yeah, October, it's gonna be like the third week of October 18 to 23 or something like that. Lesley Logan 12:01  It's a little later because of a holiday, I don't want to be there. We don't like being on a retreat during Pchum Ben because it's like the (inaudible) and they are, Pchum Ben, literally celebrate for 30 days. But the first three days are really big deal, and it makes it really hard to go into the temples because some of the rooms are blocked off for the holidays so we go around it.Brad Crowell 12:20  Yeah, they're doing a lot of, you know, there's a lot going on there that we are trying to avoid for next year. So, yeah. Anyway, come join us, and we're telling you now so that you have a literal year to plan. Lesley Logan 12:35  No excuses. Brad Crowell 12:36  That's right, no excuses, y'all, the spots are limited, and if you want the information, get on the waitlist, go to crowsnestretreats.com now and then, we're really fired up on the way home from this year's trip. We are going to be teaching in Singapore. And then really, what I'm really fired up about is we're going to go do the Botanical Gardens. If you've never looked these up, y'all, you have to look them up. I saw them in a movie, and I was like, that doesn't look like CGI. What the hell? Where is that place? I need to figure this out. And it is the botanical gardens at night in Singapore, and they are up on this walkway that's raised up above the city with these epic statues that are full of vegetation and the gardens that they've built. And it is just mind blowingly cool. And I've been dreaming of going there for many, many, many years, and finally.Lesley Logan 13:24  And we have a 15-hour layover during the day, so we can do workshops and the garden. Brad Crowell 13:27  Yeah, it's gonna be great. So go check that out. Lesley Logan 13:30  You can't check out our workshop, but you can go check out their gardens. Brad Crowell 13:33  That's right, yeah, the workshop is private event, but the but the gardens are dope. Winter tour.Lesley Logan 13:37  It was announced yesterday. Lesley Logan 13:39  Oh, yeah. Lesley Logan 13:39  I bet you you can go to opc.me/tour at this point. Brad Crowell 13:42  Yeah, you can go to opc.me/tour I'm sure the events was redirected to tour, but if not, you'll get an email saying you're on the waitlist. Thanks. Oh, by the way, tour is open. Click here, so go check your email if you just signed up on the waitlist, opc.me/events or opc.me/tour we are planning to do another 8000 miles. We are. Lesley Logan 14:00  Crazy people. Brad Crowell 14:02  We're looking at like 22 to 24 cities, I think, on this, this tour. And we're really looking forward to being back up in the northeast, all the way back down in Miami. Well, we're going to do Fort Lauderdale this year instead of Miami, but we'll be in the area. And then, yeah, it's going to be awesome. So we can't wait to hang with you again in person, if you've joined us last year, just so that you know, tickets are starting to sell really fast when we make these announcements so.Lesley Logan 14:28  Especially for winter tour, because people, like, can go see family members at certain places. So like, they are, they're on it. They're watching it.Brad Crowell 14:35  So tickets opened yesterday. So go check it out, opc.me/tour. Now, we got some exciting things. We're already talking about 2026 here. Yes, what's going on in January?Lesley Logan 14:44  The Pilates Journal Expo in Huntington Beach, which is near Los Angeles. It is, I forget, I think the dates are like the ninth and 10th, or the 10th and 11th. At any rate, it's like right there. As soon as we end the tour, we go there and we do a couple great events there. So our first expo in the U.S. I'm really excited for them, because we need more conferences. Yeah, we need more ways to get together. Brad Crowell 15:06  It's gonna be awesome. So we've got a new URL for you, everybody, are you ready? This is the unveiling ofLesley Logan 15:13  xxll.co/pilatesjournal so my initials how I sent off xxll.co/pilatesjournal.Brad Crowell 15:20  That'll take you straight to the Pilates Journal Expo. Brad Crowell 15:20  And they have tickets already. Brad Crowell 15:23  Yep, it's available. Lesley Logan 15:28  And then in March, we're going to be in Poland, the Contrology conference in it's like, wut-waf and then sometimes people try to tell me say, oh, ruk-luf. And that's not how you say it. It's like, Wroclaw, but I'm going to be there. And so it's xxll.co/poland and then the next week we'll be in Brussels, different workshops, same, great people. So come to both xxll.co/brussels. So that's Q1, that's as far as I'm going with guys, I don't want to scare myself.Brad Crowell 16:02  Well, then we're gonna be in London in April. Lesley Logan 16:05  Okay, well, just let the cat out of the bag, babe. I'm not talking about Q2. No, no. Refuse. Refuse. We have to wait a couple months. Brad Crowell 16:15  Oh, shoot. We'll wait. We'll wait. Lesley Logan 16:17  I don't like, then it's like, and then in June, and then people are like, too much. They're not listening anymore. It's not, we're losing listeners.Brad Crowell 16:24  It's true. All right. Here we go. We had an audience question. Kaylee Nicole Medina asks, hey Lesley, I wanted to ask you, which classical Reformer do you recommend for a small studio that I'm opening, I'm planning to have only four Reformers, and Kaylee, I can already tell you exactly which Reformer she's gonna recommend.Lesley Logan 16:40  Brad is taking over the answers these days. Well, let's see.Brad Crowell 16:43  Lesley is, if you don't know this, Lesley is a a Pilates Contrology demo center right here in Las Vegas. Lesley Logan 16:52  Just my whole self, yeah. Brad Crowell 16:53  Lesley herself, our our home, is a demo center for Contrology. So, of course, she's going to go with the Contrology Reformer, which is 80 inches. Lesley Logan 17:01  Well, they have a couple but. Brad Crowell 17:04  But the ones that we have are 80. Lesley Logan 17:10  They're 80. Brad Crowell 17:10  So for a smaller studio, get the 80 inches.Lesley Logan 17:08  Yeah, they're gonna work for people up to six-three and all that stuff. And then the other thing I did, I will say, Kaylee, is, if you're like, you could do 280 and 286 is so that way, if you had a couple tall people, you could do that, they're still not what I like about them is they're lightweight, so they're easy to move around. So if the floor is like hardwood floor you could put some little felt on the bottom. It's really easy to, like, slide things around. And Kaylee, if you want to take it up another notch, I'm gonna say you can get both the 80 and the 86 with Towers on them. Now, obviously. Lesley Logan 17:33  You get the 80s with Tower? Lesley Logan 17:37  Shhh. They don't advertise, but you can ask. You gotta talk to me. Gotta talk to me. I'll give you to my girl. My girl will help you out with it.Brad Crowell 17:49  Didn't know that. Lesley Logan 17:49  If you are a taller body, it's obviously not a long enough mat for you, which is why I'm suggesting 286 is 280s and with Towers, and now you have a small studio with two different oh, and get this.Brad Crowell 18:03  That's right, you'll get the you'll get the Reformers, the Towers, and you'll be able to put the mats right on them, so.Lesley Logan 18:08  By the way. But wait there, and not just it. You can buy the handles. This is how genius Balanced Body and Contrology are, they made it so that that converted mat or Tower, you could put the classical mat handles in and now it's a three in one. Brad Crowell 18:22  Come on. Lesley Logan 18:23  You're welcome. And you can use my discount and that's gonna save you like 5% which is like shipping. So, you're welcome. Lesley Logan 18:32  Yeah. So reach back out, Kaylee, that's great. I didn't know that. Fancy, fancy. Don't tell.Brad Crowell 18:39  If you have a question, just text us at 310-905-5534, or submit your question at beitpod.com/questions beitpod.com/questions where you can leave your wins or your questions. I want all your wins. Brad Crowell 19:03  We want more wins. Lesley Logan 18:59  Of course, I want your questions, but I want your wins, too. Brad Crowell 19:01  Yeah, bring it on. All right. Well, stick around. We'll be right back. We're gonna dig into this convo that Lesley had with Meghan Pherrill. Just a minute. Brad Crowell 19:08  All right, welcome back. Let's talk about Meghan Pherrill. Meghan Pherrill is one of the is the creator of Balanced by Meghan, a wellness brand and top Canadian podcast, Balance Your Life. Shaped by her journey through personal challenges and past trauma, Meghan discovered yoga, meditation and healthy eating habits as tools to rebuild her life and really battle OCD and debilitating trauma, right? Today, she inspires others to embrace small, sustainable changes that lead to a well -balanced life. Through retreats, workshops and her podcast, she empowers people to tune into their intuition, find patience in their healing journey, and create a life rooted in health, resilience and authenticity. So it was, it was, it was definitely interesting. It was an intriguing conversation. There's definitely a lot more to that conversation that you y'all didn't go into. But what? But, but what? Tell me what? What is one of the things that jumped out at you?Lesley Logan 20:00  Well, I think, like, what I what I really was interested in talking with her about, because being it till you see it is like she used to, she was, she is diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder, right? She had depression and anxiety, and, like, she now is in a whole different place in her life, right? And she worked through all those things. And I'm just like, I think that's really amazing. Because I think a lot of people have this badge of, oh, I have anxiety, or I'm depressed, or I have OCD, and they use it as like, and that's why I can't X, Y and Z. And she had this breakup that was a total wake up call for her, and she was able to realize that she'd become someone she didn't want to be. She didn't like who she was. And, I mean, it's kind of like last week's episode with Wendy Valentine, like out of a relationship, but different points in their life. Meghan is very young. Brad Crowell 20:45  Yeah, sure. Lesley Logan 20:46  And so it's a whole it's not like a midlife crisis, it's like a no, you're an adult now, and you're you don't like who, what's going on with your life and who you become. And so she put all this energy into into this relationship, and she changed herself, and she just didn't like who she so it didn't, didn't work, but she found herself in another way, which is, like, led her discovering yoga, and she got off her medications and started eating really clean, and that really allowed her to, like, start to become this person who you know isn't being controlled by OCD and depression anxiety.Brad Crowell 21:25  Yeah, I think the thing that I loved about that, that kind of buckles right into it, is that change from something like that, you know, it was, it was fast and slow at the same time. And she, she kind of emphasized that it it was quick in the grand scheme of things, but it wasn't quick in the moment, you know. And she said she felt so lost, and was, was like she talked about, you know, having the will to live, you know. And she realized that, she realized the necessity of trying to be happy. She said it was a long journey, but it was her truth, and that her advice for others starting their wellness journey is to just start with one thing, one thing at a time, and give yourself time to do the one thing like this isn't like one thing today and a new thing tomorrow, and a new thing the next day and a new thing the next day. Just like, just focus on one thing. I mean, we're talking obsessive compulsive in in a way that I've only seen portrayed in movies. You know, flip the lights on and off multiple times, open and shut the door multiple times, stand up, sit down. She mentioned something about checking her books, something like 46 times. I don't understand that, you know. I don't even understand what that why she's doing when she's when someone would be doing that.Lesley Logan 22:51  I know I think like, it's like, now I want to know more about OCD, because I do think people flip it and go, oh, I have OCD. Oh, you know. And I like, and maybe you do, but if.Brad Crowell 23:03  I think there are different, like, extremes of OCD.Brad Crowell 23:05  But like, this is completely time-consuming. I mean, she had a traumatic.Brad Crowell 23:14  You mentioned that you were like, man, that must have been so much time. And she said, you don't even know. She's like, yeah, it was a lot of time. Lesley Logan 23:14  Yeah, like, and, of course, that's what I focused on. Like, how much time is that? Like? Just seems like a lot of time. Is one reason why I could, I don't think I could become OCD because, like, I just can't. I hate wasting time that would really.Brad Crowell 23:27  Yeah, really what she what she said was quick was the breaking of the habits. And she said that was, and that was also from a interestingly, it was like a traumatic moment snapped her out of the some of the habits that she had formed. And it was her grandfather. She got news that her grandfather was, I don't remember if he was diagnosed or if he had actually passed away yet, but she, like he, he was incredibly important to her and and there was, like this, this moment of clarity that really changed things for her. And it's she stopped the habits, and then she's, you know, so now she's not, you know, checking her books 46 times, standing up and sitting down, 15 times, you know. And she said, all of a sudden, I had so much time on my hands. And then she asked, like she said, you know, what are you going to do with it? You might as well do something that makes you feel happier with that time.Lesley Logan 24:22  Yeah. And I think, like, I think how cool that she got to do it at such such a young age. Because I and now she's, like, her whole life is so different. She has an amazing podcast. She's got a kid and, like, and. Brad Crowell 24:34  Yeah it sounds like she connected with a really supportive boyfriend, and now husband, who happens to have a great name. Lesley Logan 24:40  Yeah, is it Brad? Brad Crowell 24:43  It is and, but he, he, you know, was helping her through the steps that that, like, like, kind of, I guess helping her through is the wrong way out. He was there alongside her, through the change. Lesley Logan 24:54  And I think, you know, I think that can go both ways. I think it could be like, oh, my. God, like I if you're alone and like, I just wish I had someone to go through this with. If you are currently alone, you, there are, there might be someone you can hire or like a person to go through with, that like you could bring on versus a partner. Because not every partner, like, don't like, not every partner is as great as this person, right? So she had a perfect person to be on her side who would like, could see the person she wanted to become, and could envision that dream and like, be there for all the journey. But you might end up finding out you're with someone who doesn't want to be part of that journey, and then it makes it so. I would just say, like, don't be jealous, or think it, the grass is green on that side. If you're wanting to make a change like this, there are people out there who want to help you. You know, there are, there are services out there. And I that's one of the things I find so fast, and the more I learn about services in the world, there are literally services. There is a charity who will do anything. So, like, there's going to be someone out there, you it's not the easiest thing to, like, look for help. But like, we had that one guy on who talked about all the different ways you can get money or food or diapers. We just found out from the charity we donate to that they will help people who can't afford dog food get dog food so they can keep the dog so the dogs are not going to the shelter. So like, there is some so if you are needing help with something right now, and her journey has, like, sparked something new, like, please advocate for yourself to get help.Brad Crowell 26:23  Yeah, there's a community called the International OCD Foundation, or the IOCDF, and it provides education, resources, community support, professional training, you know, so you can there definitely are tools, you know, if you are feeling isolated, yeah.Lesley Logan 26:40  I love it. I think it's really, I think it's really cool. I don't, I don't know anyone who's had this, but I've always wondered, like, what it's like, and it was really nice of her to share that with us and then share how she's changed her life.Brad Crowell 26:52  Yeah, yeah. Lesley Logan 26:53  It's a true be it till you see it story. Lesley Logan 26:56  I'm it was, you know, and I'm excited for her that she, you know, has been moving forward and building these things, and, you know, starting a family and doing all this stuff. So that's great. It's, you know, I think she's clearly doing things that are making her happier. So, good for her. Brad Crowell 27:12  Yeah, we can all learn from that. Yeah. Brad Crowell 27:13  Yeah. Stick around, we'll be right back. We're going to dig into those, Be It Action Items that we had with Meghan Pherrill. Brad Crowell 27:22  All right, so finally, let's talk about those Be It Action Items. What bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted action items can we take away from your convo with Meghan Pherrill? She said, hey, start with meditating five minutes a day. It will absolutely change your life, just five minutes. And she said, if you're brand new to this, maybe set aside 10 minutes so that you can get five minutes in, because it is hard. You know, I can tell you from personal experience, what do you think about when you're meditating? Are you supposed to think about things? Are you like? You know, I don't really know. I've all these preconceived notions of what it is, she said, but ultimately, recognize that you can five minutes is just five minutes. You got this, right, but she said, choose a style that resonates with you. She said if you struggle with to quiet your mind, but you can listen, maybe you do an opted maybe you do a guided meditation where you're listening to a YouTube video. I've done this, you know, and that's I find that really helpful, because it allows me to focus on something instead of just letting my mind wander. If you prefer physical a physical element, you can try breath work style meditation, which obviously we've also done, especially with your, you know, being breathwork certified, and then that will really help you focus on your breath and, you know, counting and just focusing on that thing. You know, for you know, we often talk about in yoga and in Pilates, that it is a movement meditation, because when you're when you're when you are so focused on the movement, you cannot think about anything else like there's no room for it in your head. And that is a form of meditation, right? That's where that mind body connection starts to happen, kind of a thing. And she said there's plenty of relatable teachers and resources out there. Find someone online. You can find someone on YouTube or podcast apps who you like their voice.Lesley Logan 29:13  There is this one person who I heard on a podcast when she said that she has an 11-second meditation, she turns it on, and the person goes, inhale, exhale. That's 11 seconds. Brad Crowell 29:32  Amazing. Lesley Logan 29:33  Yeah. Brad Crowell 29:34  Well, you too can meditate. And then she said get comfortable. And she said, some people like to meditate first thing in the morning. So if you're getting comfortable in your bed, make sure you sit up, otherwise you're just gonna fall back asleep. But meditation doesn't require a rigid posture, per se, right? You don't need to be like stiff as a statue, or like a monk or whatever. You can lie down, or you can be in a comfortable position, you know, just be aware that it's you know. If you're doing it right after you've woken up, you might just fall back asleep on your seat. Brad Crowell 29:59  I get in the cold plunge before I meditate. That's just like, it's not gonna happen.Brad Crowell 30:04  Hey, that's a great idea. It's a great idea. And then you know when, when the two you're talking you were talking about permission to be imperfect, right? It's not about being perfectly still or having the clearest mind. It's about being kind to ourselves and setting aside time to let our brain think and process things, and you know, in a subconscious way that we're not like actively, you know, we're creating space for that's what the meditation will do.Lesley Logan 30:34  Yeah, we talked a little bit about one more thing that I think, is it's, it's really beautiful, and it kind of springs true with last week. So if you're avoiding last week's Be It Action Item, this is gonna keep knocking on your door until you do it. But first she said, follow that intuition of yours. Just run with it and go with it. I'm studying tarot right now, and you'll know why, because we have a tarot guest coming up. I'm studying it. And the High Priestess card is all about the intuition. And like, like, going into your intuition and having some making sure that you're, like, understanding, because it's mystery. Like, intuition is also like, a mystery, right? Like, what is it? What am I saying? What am I feeling? Is that my is that my words? But anyways, so you can think of it as a High Priestess card and learning about that. Or you can figure out, like, how, how do you best understand what your intuition is saying, What does it sound like to you? So she said, just whatever's calling you or resonate with you. Follow that intuition of yours. Just run with it and go with it like just leap, right? And then she also said, don't make it complicated. Just start and see how you feel. And she also reminded us to give it some time too. It's not a one time thing. So we said it before, we're saying it again, not a one-time thing, you have to keep doing it. And she also said, as you're doing it, how did I feel? How did I feel? And that's so important, because we know from how habits are truly created, it has to actually bring joy. And dopamine, get your dopamine high. If you don't, you're not going to get that habit. If it feels like it's shameful, or like you're judging yourself, it's possible that's not your intuition, and you're following someone else's thing, so.Brad Crowell 32:06  I think, I think that's one of the things I constantly remind myself, but also when people ask me, why do you do a cold plunge every morning? You know it's a decision. But how do I feel afterwards? I've been describing it as the best cup of coffee I didn't have. Yeah, you know, you feel alert, awake immediately, and the cold is only cold for a second. Right? And now, like, because I've done it so many times that, like, shock of cold water isn't really even there anymore, even when, when the when the temperatures in the 40s, you know? Because, yeah, it's cold, but, like, I already know what to expect. But afterwards, even with just three minutes, it feels, you feel your brain is going it is actually functioning. You're up and at 'em. It's awesome, so.Lesley Logan 33:03  I hate it and love it, and I actually, I was on Meghan's podcast, and she asked me about cold plunging, and she was like, yeah, because everyone's saying, like, you shouldn't cold like, women shouldn't cold plunge. Oh yeah, oh yeah. Because being a woman means being told to cold plunge and not cold plunge. Being told, being told to do this and not do this. It's like, it's like, just, we talked about in Amy Ledin's pod episode that's coming out in December, and we're talking about habits. We're gonna have a whole habit series. So this really is building up for that. But like being a woman today, with everyone going wear a weight vest, it's not gonna do anything. Do a cold plunge. It's the worst thing you can do during a little cycle. Blah, blah, blah, I told Meghan, I said, I don't actually care. I and you have to listen to the whole conversation, but I'm summarizing. I said, it makes me feel good, and that's all that matters. And when it doesn't make me feel good anymore, then maybe I do something different. But I'm only in it for four minutes, and I'm doing it for 15 minutes every day. It's four minutes, and it really does shake the sleep off, bring me to my life, and it makes me excited to start the day. Yeah, and I can't Why? How could anything be bad? If it makes you so excited to take on your day, there's no way that could be bad for me. Impossible.Brad Crowell 34:21  Well, Meghan's podcast is called Balance Your Life. I'm just gonna look up really quick.Lesley Logan 34:26  What episode number I was? Brad Crowell 34:27  Yeah, and I'm not sure exactly, so. Lesley Logan 34:37  I don't either, but it's, it's out. Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes Why You're Not Motivated - Science Will Surprise You October 1, 2025 | Episode 5193 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Ever feel like you're spinning your wheels despite reading every motivation book out there? Scott discovered something fascinating in baby DJ school that completely flips traditional goal-setting advice on its head. Turns out, everyone's teaching you to start with your "why" - but that might be exactly backwards. Today's episode reveals the science-backed sequence that actually works. It's simpler than you think, and it explains why you've been fighting yourself all this time. Featured Story Picture this: 18-year-old Scott faces a choice between broadcast school in freezing Minneapolis or sunny Fort Lauderdale. Obviously, he chose Florida. Who wouldn't? But here's the twist - those broadcast school professionals forced him to learn journalism when all he wanted was to spin records. He looked down his nose at journalists, thinking it had nothing to do with being a world-famous DJ. Years later, those five little journalism words became the key to unlocking personal transformation. The irony? He had to completely flip the order everyone teaches. Important Points Most personal development advice starts with "why" - but that's actually backwards for real change. The magic sequence is What, Why, When, Where, Who - not the traditional journalist order. Specificity beats perfection every time; concrete goals create concrete results. Memorable Quotes "Y'all wrong. I got it right." "Don't wait for the perfect plan. Because when you sit around waiting for the perfect plan, things don't always get perfect." "We're just going to assume some days are going to be perfect, and some days are not going to be perfect. So if we average out pretty good days, we get a pretty good life, right?" Scott's Three-Step Approach Define your "what" with brutal specificity - write it down and make it concrete. Create a question roadmap using the five words in proper order for transformation. Take massive, imperfect action - put one concrete step on your calendar this week. Connect With Me Search for The Daily Boost on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. We flew to Fort Lauderdale for my dad's 70th and celebrated three holidays in one weekend. Think Christmas dinner in September (complete with matching PJs and a private chef), a DIY Indian wedding baraat with an inflatable horse, a pool party in a thunderstorm, and a Valentine's wig parade that almost sent my dad into cardiac arrest from laughing so hard. Somewhere in the middle, TRID declared Ferrero Rocher to be chocolate Bitcoin, and I nearly drowned in asparagus seaweed, Basically, core memories were made, and chaos was invited. As the Department of Justice investigates the alleged fraudulent claims against Tricolor Auto Acceptance, one expert warns that there may not be enough collateral to satisfy the subprime lender's outstanding debt with all its financiers. In more common bankruptcy scenarios, assets are liquidated to repay outstanding debt.  “What makes it a little bit more complicated [with Tricolor] is there's 25,000 creditors in this particular case that have claims here, and some of them have claims against the same collateral,” Brian Bastin, program director for the business and automotive programs at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Keiser University, tells Auto Finance News in this week's podcast. JPMorgan Chase, Origin Bank and Fifth Third Bank all had existing warehouse lines with Tricolor and are just some of those in the long list of Tricolor's creditors.  “In all likelihood, there probably is not going to be enough money to be able to make whole everybody in this particular situation,” Bastin says, noting that there is a pecking order to claims and payments as a result of liquidating the lender's assets for its Chapter 7 bankruptcy.  “In all likelihood, there probably is not going to be enough money to be able to make whole everybody in this particular situation.” -- Brian Bastin, program director for the business and automotive programs, Keiser University, Consumers should be proactive about making sure that any former loans, title liens, service contracts and warranties are properly dealt with to avoid any road bumps down the road.  Join Senior Associate Editor Truth Headlam and Keiser University's Brian Bastin as they break down the potential implications of Tricolor's bankruptcy for lenders, consumers and the subprime market as a whole in this week's Weekly Wrap. This episode is sponsored by The Work Number by Equifax.

Highest and Best Use with Mike D'Onofrio

Every business transaction has hidden tax opportunities waiting to be discovered, if you know where to look. This week on the IC-DISC podcast, I spoke with Mike D'Onofrio from Engineered Tax Services, who's spent 17 years helping business owners maximize their tax strategies through engineering-based specialty tax services. Mike joined ETS after working in corporate M&A and private equity, where he first recognized the critical need for specialized tax expertise during business transitions, and what struck me about Mike's approach is how his firm combines professional engineering expertise with tax strategy to deliver comprehensive solutions. They handle everything from cost segregation studies and energy incentives to insurance optimization, processing hundreds of cost segregation studies weekly across every property type imaginable. Mike's philosophy centers on what he calls "HABU" - highest and best use - focusing on their core expertise while partnering with specialists like us for complementary strategies that create immediate opportunities for businesses to improve cash flow. The conversation reinforced something I've noticed across successful advisory relationships: the best results come from specialists who stay in their lane while building collaborative teams. Mike's emphasis on maintaining human intelligence alongside technology adoption resonated with my own experience that relationships still drive business success.     SHOW HIGHLIGHTS ETS processes hundreds of cost segregation studies weekly, from single-family rentals to NFL stadiums, proving tax strategies scale across all property types. The recent bonus depreciation bill plus R&D tax credit enhancements now allow 100% first-year expense capture, creating immediate cash flow opportunities. Mike's "HABU" principle (Highest And Best Use) drives their decision to stay specialized rather than compete with partners in overlapping services. Engineering expertise combined with tax strategy creates unique value—ETS knows roof types, electrical systems, and construction costs that insurance carriers demand. After recognizing insurance as clients' second biggest pain point after taxes, ETS launched a complementary insurance division leveraging existing property data. Mike advises his 25-year-old self to surround himself with people much smarter, crediting uncomfortable situations with experts as his greatest learning opportunities.   Contact Details LinkedIn - Mike D'Onofrio (https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelfdonofrio/) LINKSShow Notes Be a Guest About IC-DISC Alliance About Engineered Tax Services Mike D'OnofrioAbout Mike TRANSCRIPT (AI transcript provided as supporting material and may contain errors) Dave: Good morning, Mike. Welcome to the podcast. Mike: Good morning, Dave. Great to be here with you today. Definitely. Dave: So where are you located at the moment? What part of the world are you in? Mike: Yeah, well, I'm in my home base today in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dave: Okay. Mike: Yeah. I've always liked Charlotte, a pretty part of the country. Charlotte's a beautiful place, man. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Great school, high school, college, so I know the Midwest and I still love Cleveland, of course, a Browns fan and a Indians guardians fan and Cavs. But moved to South Florida right after that, right after college and was living in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, and we're still based there. Our corporate acres is there, but my wife and I had originally met in Charlotte, and we love the seasons. I love the ability to, I see those mountains in your background. I love the ability, we don't have the same type of mountains as you do, but love getting out to the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains, seeing the fall, the leaves, and can get to the beach, can drive down to Wilmington or Charleston in a couple hours. So we're right in the middle. We're bus to be here and have the Dave: Options. Yeah, it's a great location. You have four seasons and a slightly milder winter than Cleveland, Mike: That's for sure. It seems like winters have softened up a little bit in Cleveland, but man, I remember the mornings going out to the bus when I was a little kid with snow piled up over my head and the drifts up on the side of the house. I'll never forget those days. That was awesome. That was a real winter. But now in Charlotte, if we get a dusting of snow or a little bit of ice, it's usually gone by noon. Dave: Yeah. I was born and spent the first 13 years of my life in northwest Iowa and was the oldest of two boys. So I remember having to get up an hour early to go shovel the driveway just so mom and dad could get to work in that. So yeah, my saying is the worst Texas summer is still better than the best Northern Winter is my theory. Mike: You got it, man. High five to those of us that have shoveled snow driveways, walkways, figured out a snowblower with the chains on the wheels and all that fun stuff that comes with winter. Dave: So by some people's interpretation, we come from the same place because I've discovered people not from the Midwest, they think Ohio, Iowa, and Idaho are all the same place. Mike: Yeah, Dave: They're just all somewhere up there. Yes. It's up Mike: Somewhere up there in the Midwest. Folks like myself grew up in Ohio and Cleveland and Detroit and Chicago. I mean, definitely they think that's the heart of the Midwest, but they forget about the Midwest. Goes pretty far west. Right. Dave: It does. All the way to the mountains. So, well, let's get into it. So when did you join engineered tax services? Mike: Wow, it's been a big part of my life. Exciting journey. Like I said, after college I moved down to South Florida and my background was in more corporate m and a private equity working on the finance side of things in transactions, in private equity back in the day, they would call it kind of strategic intermediary work where we would either work on the buy side or sell side with the client. So I worked with a lot of clients and business owners that were maybe interested in transitioning out of their business. Maybe they were a food manufacturer or distributor. And interestingly enough, one of my mentors in life, his name is Bruce. Bruce was one of the first international CEOs with McDonald's corporation. Oh, really? Yeah, one of Ray Croc's, first five or six right hand key people. Before McDonald's had any international business, the first place that they went outside the US was to Latin America and the Caribbean. And I met Bruce in South Florida my early career, and we really saw an opportunity together, old school style, to go through his Rolodex and be like, man, I have a lot of relationships within the McDonald's and the finance ecosystem. So we started working with many different company owners, like I said, distributors, producers of different things, and we had some great success. And along the way I saw that there was really a need to understand specialty tax credit and incentives and strategies depending on who the client was, whether it was the seller of a company or a property or buyer of that was really to dig into the details of, Hey, what's the best way to make this transaction as tax efficient as possible? Tax was always the first pain point, either from the seller's point of view, maybe there was a big potential cap gain situation, how to structure that deal or from the buyer or investor's point of view, how to maybe capture some additional credits and incentives that they hadn't thought about, like research and development tax credits, or maybe there was a big piece of real estate or property involved in the transaction, like a manufacturing facility or office buildings or retail locations. So while digging in deeper in some of those transactions, I met Julio Gonzalez in Engineered Tax Services. She's going on 17, 18 years ago, and it was a small boutique firm at the time, engineered tax, and we were very focused on serving CPA firms nationally as that specialist. And I saw a great opportunity to really become a more diverse, focused specialist, and not only help CPA firms, but help private equity, the real estate investor, anything in that transaction to really help understand the tax code for the bonus depreciation or energy credits and incentives. Sure you do. Maybe they do domestic or international type of trade in that business, and there's a structure that might be a little bit more savvy than they're familiar with. So man, 17, 18 years ago is when I started with ETS, and we've grown substantially over the years from a handful of people in a small boutique firm in downtown West Palm Beach, Julio, and myself and Kim and Heidi and others, though I think pretty well, and we've really expanded, and so now not only still working with those CPA firms nationally, to be that specialist working with other professionals like you of really just how to maximize each transaction, understand the inevitable changes in the tax code with the different administrations. There's the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Trump 1.0, 2.0, what happened just now in July with a big beautiful bill, but the CARES Act, the Path Act, the previous tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the CHIPS Act, whatever the stimulus plan or new tax incentive of the day was. That was our job to really dig into that, be a great job educating around that and bringing it as proactively and transparently to the CPA community as well as the investors and owners. Dave: Yeah. I became acquainted with ETS and about the same time you did, and Julio invited me to South Florida and gave you the tour of the cool office building that you all rehabbed. Mike: Yeah. Then he was Dave: Kind Mike: Enough to, was that the one on a Vernia Street when he had just purchased it? Was it, Dave: I forget the street. It was like maybe a six story old building Mike: That's still his building and our corporate headquarters on the corner of Vernia and Olive for any of you that are down in West Palm Beach, and we'd love to show you around. It's a cool building. Dave: And then he was kind enough to host me at a Dolphins football game. Mike: I remember those days. Right. Dave: And for whatever reason, he was considered a bit of a VIP by the Dolphins, so I was able to go down on the field before the game, and I think I even had a photo taken with a Dolphin's cheerleader on each side of me that for whatever reason, it never made it up on the wall in our house. I'm not sure why, if that would've been a problem with my wife or now with a photo of two Dolphins cheerleaders hugging me, Mike: Dave, I think I have different versions of the exact same picture with myself and some friends. I have a great one with myself and my dad. Maybe we'll use some technology and pop some of those pictures up for others to see when you publish this podcast, or maybe we'll just keep those private for ourselves. But yeah, we used to Julio's involvement with the Dolphins and the family behind the scenes. We did. We did some amazing, not only professionally working with those types of property owners and venues, we did the cost segregation study on the Miami Dolphins Stadium when it was renovated. Dave: Oh, Mike: Yeah, I remember that. And a lot of others, Broncos, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins. I did some work on the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, the Superdome in New Orleans, the Raiders facilities, the Buffalo Bills not allowed to give out any confidential information, but everybody's looking to save in tax and take advantage of whatever strategies are available in the code. But personally, obviously, we love sports and entertainment and being able to build the relationships with our clients, so we had a very cool double founder suite there in those early days that we used to all meet in West Palm Beach, have some fun on the Saturday, take the bus down on the Sunday morning. Yeah. We did that for years, and we still do some of that in Miami and in some different cities. I'll be doing some of it in Charlotte. But yeah, man, those were fun times. We really built amazing relationships still with clients today that actually, I saw a client yesterday that said, Hey, Mike, I was at the Green Bay game. I remember when we were down on the field and one of the Green Bay players said, hi. He is like, Hey, man. That was a childhood legend of mine that I'd always wanted to meet. And then of course, that's really cool. Sometimes we got to meet what Dan Marino and folks down in the tunnel in the Dolphins. Dave: Well, the other cool thing was Julio intentionally picked a Monday night game that he invited me to, so that made it even more fun. National game. Mike: Oh, yeah. Makes for a late evening getting home, that's for sure. Dave: It does. And so I just have to warn you, Julio was a guest on the podcast about three or four years ago, so he set the bar pretty high, so no pressure my Mike: Oh, yeah, none at all. But I Dave: Know being a former athlete, you're probably a little bit competitive, so I'm sure you'll want to point out to Julio that you think you did a better job. Mike: Yeah, just a little bit, Julio, and we spend a lot of time together. We were together yesterday in Fort Lauderdale at an event with a great mix of clients and we're real competitive from a business aspect, obviously wouldn't be great for our clients. He was a wrestler in his younger days. That was also a wrestler, really just to stay in shape for baseball. I was a baseball player. I think you had asked me before, I always keep a couple baseballs around my desk. I like to futz with them when I'm working here in the office, but think about the different strategies, whether you need to throw the curve ball or the fast ball or the riser, whatever it is. I think about just those different grips and strategies. So yes, I'm a bit competitive, to say the least. Dave: Sure. I know the firm has grown. What's your elevator pitch today? When people ask who ETS done, who ETS is and who do they serve? Mike: Well, engineered Tax and Advisory had the advisory portion of it as well, because that's engineered tax services been around a long time. We're really good at doing the specific engineering based services that the CPAs or the property owners need to get the bonus depreciation or the energy credits and incentives onto the tax return. So that's doing the cost segregation study as a licensed professional engineering and specialty tax firm, we've been doing those for going on 24 years or doing the energy analysis or helping with, like you do, calculate the construction costs, the transfer costs, the sales tax, the property tax. That's what engineered tax services is excellent at doing as that specialist as that. Dave: I'm sorry, that's more than just cost segregation though, right? Mike: Oh, yeah. Yeah. There's cost segregation and bonus depreciation available on real estate, new construction purchases, renovations. So we're very involved. We do hundreds and hundreds of cross segregation studies a week across the country on all different types of assets from smaller single family investment properties and VRBO to manufacturing facilities and multifamily and apartments and hospitality and everything you could imagine up to different sports and recreation stadiums. But that's one subset of what engineered tax does that. Then there's the energy incentives and credits, the 1 79 D, the 45 L, the investment tax credits for renewables like wind and solar and geothermal and turbines and other types of things. But on the advisory side, we work it backwards. That's more the consultative approach with the clients to figure out what is the need. Maybe there's a liquidity event with a business owner that's selling a business. Maybe there's a capital need from an acquisitions point of view or an expansion point of view where some of the IC disc strategies might come in. Maybe they're wondering about opportunity zones or enterprise zones or historic tax credits or preservation and conservation type strategies, or buying equipment or a jet and aviation strategies. Because all of those things that I just mentioned, there's either a specialty tax component with bonus depreciation or section 1 79 or an actual tax credit, like research and development tax credits. We help bring it all together as a very experienced and comprehensive specialist around the tax code, anything available, federal, state, local incentives, credits, rebates, working with the CPAs, working with professionals like you, working with the high net worth or the company owner. That's what we pride ourselves in, is being very comprehensive depending on what the opportunity and the need is for the client. Dave: Okay, and speaking of clients, do you think of the CPA firm as your client or the actual end user or both? I think because done a really good job cultivating those CPA firm relationships. Mike: Yeah, Dave, that's a good question. I first and foremost see the CPAs as our client, but also our strategic partner because remember, we're a specialist. We don't do the full accounting audit and tax filing work for the client. We sit in the specialist seat. I explain it all the time to my friends and new clients when they're trying to figure out what we do. If I was in the medical profession, we would be a brain surgeon or a heart surgeon or some other type of specialist within medicine that works together with the general practitioners and others in medicine on the tax code and helping with the tax literacy, the tax strategy, the specialty credits and incentives like icdisc. How do we bring up those types of situations and opportunities? Usually it's working with that CPA firm to identify the client need and then being comprehensive and entrepreneurial with that client. So long-winded answer to that is both. I see the CPAs as both our client and our strategic partner in situations, but definitely once I work with the company owner or the investor, they're also ultimately our client. So I need to deliver at a high level to both the CPA and both the client, or if I meet the client directly and you are the company owner that's asking us questions about a situation or a strategy, we push to be introduced to the CPA to make sure that we're collaborative, attacking that strategy from the beginning and become a great compliment to the CPA service so they can focus on what they do best, the accounting audit or tax type or bookkeeping type work that they do, and then just like you really helping to layer in that specialty strategy that maybe they're not as familiar with or really just need some help from a bandwidth perspective. Dave: Sure. I've come across other firms that do some of the same services you all do. And what do your clients and CPA firms tell you that makes ETS different and why they have chosen to partner with ETS over another firm? Mike: First of all, I think about that all the time. That's a question that comes up often. When we started 24, 25 years ago, there was very few firms that were doing some of the things that we do there. There were CPA firms that did cost segregation studies, but usually that was the higher level firms, the Deloitte, the KM KPMGs, the E and Ys, excellent high level firms, but they were really only doing it for their higher level corporate type clients as we democratize the tax code and brought that tax strategy to middle market type businesses, entrepreneurs and investors, the strategy there was really to work as comprehensively with different types of as possible. And the difference to me is first of all, our longevity and our professionalism and our diversity of the type of services that we're doing uniquely as a licensed professional engineering firm that also does specialty tax credits and incentives. That's one of the biggest differentiators to me is we are a licensed professional engineering firm. The type of engineering that we do is cost engineering, looking at the cost of an acquisition, the cost of a purchase, the cost of a new construction of a property, and be able to break that down into accounting and tax format that the CPAs can then use. So that's where the hybrid of the engineering expertise and specialty tax expertise, so that unique structure of our firm, that unique ability to do multiple things and also have the energy incentives team in-house where if it's a new construction of a property or a big value add, repositioning, not only can we do that cost segregation study, we can comprehensively do that energy tax credit and incentive analysis. We have to do energy modeling. That's pure engineering type work, doing the energy incentive modeling to see what the energy efficiency of those components are. Or on a renewable energy project. We have a client that's building a really big mixed use project that has some geothermal investment tax credits there. Those are pure engineering and energy efficiency type knowledge that we're able to bring comprehensively. So it's really the comprehensive approach of bringing engineering specialty tax energy incentives and credits. We also have an insurance division, which is very unique for our industry because I knew years ago that the second biggest painful point for our clients after tax figuring out tax minimization strategies is how do they lower costs and make sure they're protected from an insurance standpoint? And we do have a part of our firm that is engineered insurance services to compliment engineered tax services. We already have all the, Dave: Yeah, tell me about the insurance company because I'm less familiar with that, and when did you start it? Are you licensed in all the states? Mike: Yeah, we are. We've been quietly developing that over the last couple of years. I said, my background's from Cleveland, Ohio. Coincidentally, the firm that we partnered with is based in Cleveland, Ohio. When we formed a new entity together, engineered insurance services, went back to all the different carriers and got relicensed with all the top national carriers, all the names that folks would know well. So now as a nationally licensed insurance agency and brokerage firm, we focus on property casualty liability, cyber risk, flood, E and O, D and O, all the things that every company and every property owner needs. But we can do it comprehensively and uniquely because we're already doing the cost segregation studies on a lot of these properties. So we know what the cost basis is, we know what kind of roof it is, we know where it's located. We know the age of the electrical system and all the situations with the property, and also that owner, how they operate that property. That's what, just like the IRS with cost segregation study, they want to see the details and then yes, you can capture the benefits of bonus depreciation. The insurance carriers, they want to write insurance policies at very competitive rates, but they want to see it in detail. They want to understand that building. They just don't want an estimate that a broker submits to them. So we've had amazing success over the last year and a half of rolling out that program, doing it comprehensively with what we're already doing for that client. Dave: That's really, Mike: That's the other reason that we're very unique compared because there are some great firms that do cost segregation or that might do an energy analysis or that might do a research and development tax credit study, but very few firms, if any, that know about really take that comprehensive approach to be able to do tax energy insurance and the specialty consulting with engineered advisory with what we're doing, And it resonates. It really resonates with clients because I feel like they really need someone that is, first of all, thinking entrepreneurially like them, because sometimes they're not getting it from maybe their legal team or their CPA team or their other advisors that they're working about taking that entrepreneurial approach, taking that proactive approach before the end of the year or before that renewal term for that insurance policy or before that building gets purchased or before the renovation happens, what should they be thinking about? And that's what I really try to work on with our team and our clients is be very proactive, be very transparent of the good, the bad, the ugly of different situations that clients should consider and then always be thinking entrepreneurially like our clients do because they appreciate it with your business and what you do with IC disc. Sometimes folks just haven't heard about it or they don't understand it, or they didn't do something proactively and now they're trying to unwind a situation, but I'm really excited about what we do. If you can't tell, I think, No, it definitely comes, the future is very strong, especially with the passage in July of Trump's, I call it the big beautiful bonus depreciation tax bill because bonus depreciation and section 1 79 enhancements for equipment and other things and other things that will be, I think, expanded with opportunity zones and research and development tax credits. The way that they also just enhanced that program as well. Many folks don't understand it yet because there was a requirement to amortize some of the expenses of r and d over five years, but now you get the research and development tax credit plus a hundred percent of the qualifying expenses being able to be captured year one, so that's very powerful for US companies. Dave: Yeah, no, that is great. And one of the other things that I appreciate about you all is that you all really stay in your lane. I feel like on the tax side, there's other firms that do cost and r and d that have just broadened their tax focus even more broadly, pick up things like the IC disc. So it's hard for me to get excited about referring a cost segregation study to a firm that does IC disc, so I've always, Mike: Yeah, it's a bit of a competitive overlap in those situations. Dave: Yeah, yeah. It's a less comfortable introduction. Mike: We have a saying within our organization, we call it habu, right? Highest and best use, what is my highest and best use? What should I be focused on doing for that client? My highest and best use is not trying to understand and replicate your service around icdisc. The best situation is for me to recognize opportunities and then bring in David and his team to implement a strategy for the client and the CPAs like that as well, because we're not trying to do what they do. We're just trying to compliment different situations, be a specialist at what we're really good at, and in our engineered advisory platform. That's where I can bring in you for the IC disc. I might have someone else that I'm working with if that client's buying an aircraft, for example, of how to legally structure it correctly, how to maximize the tax benefits, and I want to be an amazing, whether you want to call it an offensive coordinator or quarterback, that I might be throwing the ball sometimes. Other times I might be passing it off to somebody else, but I want to build a great team so that we're successful at the end for the client. Dave: Sure. No, that's certainly been my experience with you guys. What do you love most or enjoy most about your current role with ETS? What really gets you excited? Mike: Well, my title, I'm not big on titles, but it's managing Director of Engineered Tax and Advisory. So technically what that title means is I direct and I manage, I direct high level client relationships and strategic partnerships and strategies and new product development. I also help manage our, I work together with our executive team to help manage our executives across the country, either if they're in business development, some of them obviously are in engineering or other specialties within our firm or the legal team that does some structuring work for clients, but that's what I do. My favorite part of what I do is the relationships that I'm building with the clients. It might be a brand new relationship. It might be one from 15, 20 years ago, but it's watching that. Yeah, it's watching that CPA firm grow or helping that CPA firm grow and expand or diversify their services or meeting that entrepreneur that has a business and they're trying to understand the tax code, how to lower taxes, how do I increase cashflow? What are the risks or pitfalls, and really working with that entrepreneur or that business owner together with that ccp. That is my most favorite part of what I do, because I'm an entrepreneur at heart. I got it from my family, my mom and dad. Were always very entrepreneurial, but it's hard. You can't do it yourself. It takes a great team. I mentioned a couple of mentors that I worked with. I hope that one day I can be a mentor to some of these people that we've worked with over the years, and maybe it is the specialty tax or the energy incentives or the structuring or strategy, but also personally, we learn a lot about our clients and we share a lot personally with them. But that's absolutely my most favorite is the relationships that we've built, the stories and the journeys that we've had together. And if we do a good job, we actually do very little marketing and advertising out there. Of course, I speak at some events and do some sessions around the country, but largely our business has expanded very successfully because of those relationships and those referrals and that organic growth. Like, Hey, have you heard about engineered tax? And do you know what Mike does? You should give him a call. I watch my emails every day, and that's what makes me so happy is I remember that relationship. I remember that Miami Dolphins game, whoever it was, or the dinner that we might've had, or the beer that we might have shared somewhere where we personally built that relationship, And that's something that I'm even more so focused on right now because our world is now moving very fast in terms of technology and ai, and I think that's great, and we are a tech enabled company that we utilize those things to deliver our services and strategies as efficiently as possible for the client. But I think even more so right now, it's all about, hi again, human intelligence. We want to talk, just like you and I are doing right now, folks want to meet, yes, they want tech enabled strategies and AI to help us do things better. I think that's great, but I have, and we have a renewed focus on the human intelligence, the human relationship, the human strategy together, because I think we can do so much more if we get back to the old school relationship building strategy, building together at the human level, and then of course we'll utilize technology to make that better, faster, stronger. Dave: Yeah, no, and that's certainly that. Those relationships are certainly my favorite part of the business. The clients, the CPA firms, the other advisors, lawyers, you guys. So man, I can't believe how the time has flown by. So as we're rounding the home stretch, I have just a couple more questions. Mike: All right. Dave: If you could go back in time and give advice to your 25-year-old self, what advice might you give? Mike: Continue to surround myself with people much smarter than me. As I look back, the biggest opportunities that I had was being in what I thought at the time was uncomfortable situations with people that like, wow, this person really knows what they're doing with real estate, or This person really knows what they're doing with finance. But now looking back those situations of surrounding myself with really smart or savvy people or someone much more experienced than I was, that's where I really learned the opportunities around real estate development, around relationship building, around strategy, and structuring. Those mentors that I spent time with. I would tap myself on the shoulder and say, do more of that. Do more of that. If there's people that are wasting my time or going down avenues that really aren't good for me professionally or personally, don't waste time with that. Put myself in the room at the table in uncomfortable situations with people much smarter than myself. And even today, I try to do that every day is with some of the new technologies around AI or crypto or finance or strategy or real estate. Who are the innovators? Who are the people that really seem to be leading? I try to put myself in those situations, so that's what I would remind my young self is to take advantage of mentors, because you can really learn, and sometimes it's not until years later that you realized what you learned. Dave: Yeah. I think that's great advice, not only for your 25-year-old self, but any 25-year-old and probably any business professional who's still trying to learn and grow. Mike: Yeah. One other thing. Dave: Yeah, Mike: One more thing. As Steve Jobs used to say, don't focus on, I would tell myself not to focus on what I think the path is at that point, because the path is going to change the strategy, the job course of action, the winds are going to change. Ebb and flow, I always say is my personal mantra. The tide comes in, the tide comes out, but you can always learn to surf. You can't stop the waves, but you can always learn to surf. So don't try to be too tactful in the direction that you're going, because things will change. Companies will change and expect that change is what I'm trying to say. So expect the change that will continue to happen in our lives. Dave: Okay. Well, yeah, I like that. Thank you very much. So as we wrap up, I really just have one more question, and that is, is there anything I didn't ask you that you wish I had asked V? Anything we didn't talk about that we should have? Mike: You asked some really good questions. It sounds like we could talk all afternoon if we wanted to. The only thing you didn't ask me is about my family, and actually the thing I'm most proud of, I mentioned I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. My wife Laura, has been an amazing force in our relationship for stability and really helping me to do what I do because being on the road, it's very challenging. But my son Rocco and my daughter Lucia, are getting old and driving now as later stage teenagers. It's having those rocks behind me that really help with this ability to allow me to do what I do with our clients nationally. So I really appreciate them, and that's my other, that is my most favorite accomplishment in life of what I've been able to achieve with my family and do this professionally with engineered tech services and advisory. Dave: Yeah, understood. Yeah, because ultimately it's about relationships, both professional and personal at the end of the day. Well, anything else we didn't cover or shall we go ahead and wrap it up? Mike: I think we covered enough for now. I think we might have more to talk about. Again, I have some other ideas of topics we should talk about coming up here in the fall. There'll be some new things that we're doing. Dave: Let's do that. We'll have you back, not too distant. Future for a part two. Mike: All right. Dave: Well, Mike, I really, really appreciate the opportunity to work with you and the whole team, and you guys have taken great care of our clients. We really appreciate that and we appreciate the trust you all have placed in us to serve some of your clients as Mike: Well. Thanks, Dave. I appreciate you. Special Guest: Mike D'Onofrio.

Kristel and Margaret discuss the concept of managing up, building self-awareness and lots more. Tune in now!  Key Takeaways From This Episode: A look into Margaret's book, MANAGE YOURSELF TO LEAD OTHERS: Why Great Leadership Begins with Self-Understanding The importance of understanding yourself  Tips for self-reflection Ways to give and receive constructive feedback A look into managing up The importance of thinking like a partner ABOUT MARGARET C. ANDREWS: Margaret teaches a variety of leadership courses and professional and executive programs at Harvard University and is the founder of the MYLO Center, a private leadership development firm. Her MYLO (Manage Yourself to Lead Others) course has had a wait list every time it's been taught for over a decade and has become the most popular professional development program at Harvard. Margaret's expertise is grounded her own experience—a previous boss once told her that while her business results were great, her interpersonal skills were highly lacking. The exact phrase he used was, “you're not self-aware.” To change, Margaret looked for insight from famous leaders to management studies to disciplines like philosophy and psychology. At the end of the day, she found that the basis for powerful, effective leadership comes from within—from understanding yourself and then managing yourself toward the leader you want to become—also known MYLO. Margaret has taken her MYLO approach and distilled it into her first book, MANAGE YOURSELF TO LEAD OTHERS: Why Great Leadership Begins with Self-Understanding (Basic Venture; September 16, 2025). This is one of my dear friends. We've known each other for several years in the industry. I'm super freaking pumped. I'm going actually be at his event next year in September. Little teaser. Stay tuned. He's got an amazing event he does every year in September. I have Dr. Len Tau. He is one of my faves. He is better known ⁓ as an authority in the dental consulting world, reputation marketing, and a practice growth. He's recognized by dentistry today as a top dental consultant for eight straight years.   He is the author of Raving Patients and 100 plus tips to 105 star reviews in a hundred days. Like this man knows how to do it. He's one of my faves. We really do collaborate on so many fun things. After 20 plus years in clinical practice, he now helps dentists nationwide, increase revenue, case acceptance and visibility. He leads the dental vision at BirdEye, hosts the Raving Patients podcast and runs the Supercharger Dental Practice Conference, which is the one I was alluding to that we're gonna be at next year in September, empowering practices to thrive in today's competitive landscape.   He's truly one of my faves. And today we're gonna dig into like, how do you get online reviews? But Len, welcome. I'm so happy to have you on the podcast. How are you today?   Dr. Len Tau (01:06) I'm good, thanks for having me, I'm excited to be here.   Kiera Dent (01:08) Of course. And this just came about because Len like, let's just do a little teaser. You're prepping full like steam ahead right now for your event that's coming up in September in Florida. ⁓ I love like the last time you and I were on the podcast, we talked about you in clinical dentistry. And then we reconnected after some time and you've left the chair, you're living your best life and you full blown gone into the event space. So just like, I know we're gonna get into like online reviews and how AI is changing that it's going to be just a really, really fun episode today. But tell us a little bit like   How is it going from like full blown dentist in the chair to now full blown events, like running these awesome events that we're super excited to be a part. Just kind of give me a little insight to that.   Dr. Len Tau (01:46) Well, it's been, it's been a lot of, a lot of fun. It's been very different, obviously, you know, for 23 years, I practiced dentistry, um, for about 12 of those, 13 of those who was full time. And then I went part time in 2017 until I sold and retired in 2022. Um, but one of the things I've grew up on in dentistry was going to dental events and, the big, the ones, the small ones, you know, all over the country and as a dentist first, and then as a vendor.   Kiera Dent (02:08) Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (02:15) Um, since 2013 or 14, so a long time in the space. know, one of the things that really hit me was that the events are not really put on very well. They're not, um, you know, whether you, if you're a dentist, there's issues when you're a vendor, there's issues. And I said, you know what? I want to change the game. And, um, one of my goals when I retired from dentistry was to start putting on events. So in 2023, um, in, in September, we did an event in Delray had 208.   Kiera Dent (02:25) Right.   Dr. Len Tau (02:44) Dennis there, 33 sponsors. was, first day was business, second day was marketing. Excuse me. First day was marketing. Second day was business. Had a 13, 14 speakers. It went off better than I could ever imagined. I then moved to the last year in 2024 to Scottsdale. And we were at the Scott Resort and Spa, which is a beautiful hotel and the event was good. It wasn't great. Definitely moving to different coasts.   I felt there was not as much, know, engagement, excitement about the event. So I, my family and my wife and I decided, Hey, we're going to do this. Let's have people come down to me. I live in beautiful, you know, part of Florida. we're having this year's event and the next three of them at super at, ⁓ at pure 66, a brand new hotel, ⁓ in Fort Lauderdale. It's literally half hour from my house, five miles from the airport, easy to get to. So this year event is September 26th and 27th.   Kiera Dent (03:32) Bye.   you   No.   Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (03:45) We've got 14 speakers, ⁓ mixture of business and marketing. So we've got people talking about social media, about content. We have people talking about saving money on taxes. We're talking about how to become a fee-for-service practice. ⁓ So a lot of different great content and top speakers, Steve Rasner, Paul Goodman, ⁓ Jeff Buski, ⁓ Richard, Rich Maddow. So some real, real heavy hitters. And then some people who people haven't really heard of, Melanie Diesel, who's new in the dental industry.   So, but I like to do it differently and my events are very high end. You come, you're going to see things you probably have never seen before. I give a ton of time to the vendors so the vendors love me because they make sure that they get integration or interaction with the attendees. So you're going to be speaking in 2026, same weekend at September 25th and 26th in 2026, same hotel, pure 66.   Kiera Dent (04:28) Sure.   Yeah.   Dr. Len Tau (04:40) We're ramping things up right now. We're literally a month out from the events. still have people signing up. I still have people wanting to reach out as sponsors. And it's, it's, it's, is the fun time for me. Cause when I'm done, I'm, you know, I get a couple of months of break and then I start promoting 2027 again. So ⁓ it's been a good time. I really enjoy it. And I find that I've kind of ⁓ created something that's very different and the attendees really enjoy it and the vendors really enjoy it. So if I can make everybody happy,   Kiera Dent (04:45) No.   Dr. Len Tau (05:09) That's all I'm looking to do here.   Kiera Dent (05:11) ⁓ and Len, I hope the audience, if they can't see it, they can hear it. I think it's so fun because I mean, I've seen you in different spaces in your career, in your life. And there is just this like giddy, like younger version of Len that I feel is emerging of like, it's like giddy boyhood, like excitement of I'm excited to put these on. I'm excited to do these events. And it just makes me so happy for you. And what I think I'm hearing is yes, attendees are happy. Vendors are happy. But I also hear that Len is very happy and to do something   in dentistry is just very, very fun. It's very exciting. And so we're jazzed. I'm really excited. I love good events. I love great time. I love to help. love business marketing. Everybody can take that. That's not Kiera's jam. Like I, that's why I wanted to bring you on. You guys are very good at marketing. You're very good at that space. but to talk about how to help people have their best lives to grow the practices that they want to grow. I think you and I are so synergistic in that. So we're super excited and I love, I mean, I'm not going to highlight the fact that there were   a couple of sixes in that is September 26 at Pier 66. You guys hopefully like, I like the alliteration. Don't put anything weird on it guys, but I do appreciate that you made it easier. September six and nines flipped upside down are a six. Like hopefully everybody can remember September 26, Pier 66. It'll be a good time in 2026. I mean, we got four lines, so we're okay. We've at least got four sixes, not we didn't end on three, but I really hope an exciting step. We'll make sure we put some info for people.   For this year and for next year, I think it'll be a fun time. Dental A Team will be there, so come hang out with us. ⁓ Len, I'm super excited. I will not spoil secrets, but a lot of the things he told me for the events, I will say he does put his heart and soul into it. So Len, excited about that. Thank you for sharing. Good luck for this year. We're gonna be rooting you on this year and next year. And now let's pivot. Let's go into like your jam. You're in BirdEye, you're in marketing, you're on online reviews. AI has come into the scene. Practices are changing.   I also will say, I hope everybody listens to you of their like succession story. You hung up the hand piece, but you are still full steam ahead in dentistry. And so I hope people see that like there is no path to dentistry. Like you just, it's a, it's a beautiful world that you're in. So let's talk though, online reviews, AI, how is this working? How do we make sure that practices are still being visible? Chat GPT is on, on the prowl.   There are clients signing up with us now that have found us on chat. GPT, which is so random. It's changing how people have been doing things. Walk me through. What are you seeing with these online reviews? The importance, how to bring AI in? Like, let's just kind of go in a rift on how practices can still be visible with AIs. Like just showing up to the scene.   Dr. Len Tau (07:43) So I wanna talk about chat CPT for a second. ⁓ I refer to it as my best friend. ⁓ It helps me edit. No, I haven't named it yet. No, I haven't named it. ⁓ you have?   Kiera Dent (07:50) Have you named it? I've got to just ask Len. Have you named? I have! Me and Chet,   I had a name and now her name is Wanda. I don't know why, I don't even know where Wanda came, but people are like, here, are you hanging out with Wanda again? Cause I agree. Like they're our best friends. So go on Len. I can't wait to hear what you name your Chet GPT cause mine is currently Wanda.   Dr. Len Tau (08:06) I'll have to, I   have to name it now that I have to think of something. ⁓ but no, I started using it. I'm like, this is really helpful and it's only gotten better. And, just to give you an idea is, ⁓ my wife and I, and my son, my son just graduated high school. He's literally just started his freshman year at, university of Florida on a free ride. ⁓ smart, smart ass kid. I'm very proud of him. But, you know, and I travel a ton, but I travel a ton for business and I made a commitment. I think I told you that,   Kiera Dent (08:25) Boo? Yeah.   Dr. Len Tau (08:35) during the summer when he was going away for school, I was not going to travel. So from March to literally next week, beginning of September, I haven't traveled at all for business. we did plan some really great travel for our personal lives. And one of the things we did was we had a cruise, a 17 day cruise to Europe. ⁓ And when I decided I did not want to do the excursions to the cruise, cause they're really expensive and you're with all these people. I prefer to kind of just go and tour myself.   Kiera Dent (08:44) It's awesome.   Dr. Len Tau (09:05) So I use ChatGPT in every city. And I said, I'm going to the city. This is what I'm going to get in. This is the cruise I'm going on. It got the cruise itinerary. And I said, I want to set up private tours in every city with different people. And it helped me pick the best tour guides. They referred me to a website called Tours by Local, which is an amazing website that you can meet people who are local that will take you around.   show you the city and it was amazing. It was amazing. So I thank Chachi PT for doing that because I wouldn't have known about half these things if I didn't do it. And in fact, one of the women, and actually the very first place you went to, which was in Split, Croatia, which was beautiful. I told her that literally that's kind of how I went down this road was I asked Chachi PT, what should I do in Split? And they said, you need to use this tour guide. She's the highest rated tour guide and has the best reviews on tours by local. like,   What's towards by local? And that started this whole thing. So she was, she was amazed to hear that. So, ⁓ I have been using Chad GPT for a long time, like I said, and even now it is people I know type in, know, get me to the best dentists in the area. And it's very much based on reviews. So you have to be a highly rated practice. you may not believe in reviews and if you do, think you're not smart, but you know, if, if you want to be at the forefront of where people are looking,   Kiera Dent (09:58) Yeah.   Yes.   Dr. Len Tau (10:25) You have to generate reviews in a significant amount. Velocity now, which is how often you're getting them, is one of the biggest ranking factors on Google, whether you want to believe chat GPT or not. ⁓ But you have to get reviews. You can't, you know, rest on your laurels and say, well, I have enough because you never have enough. Okay. And, ⁓ and you've got to let Google rank you high. And there's been a big discrepancy in the industry, a big, I don't want to say a misunderstanding.   Kiera Dent (10:43) read.   Dr. Len Tau (10:52) But I've been in the review space now since 2013, so 12 years. And in the past, dentists thought that if they get reviews, they're going to rank. And that's not the way it is anymore. If you have reviews, but don't pay attention to the other ranking factors, you actually don't rank well. And that's a problem. So, chat GPT AI is so important, but you still got to dominate Google. You still got to get to the top of the pages.   And that's really where the direction is going. and if you aren't there now and you are ignoring it, you're never going to get there. So I would love to talk to you about our list in instruct or educate the listeners and viewers of these ranking factors that they need, need to pay attention to, or they're going to be left behind when it comes to ranking on Google.   Kiera Dent (11:27) Yeah.   absolutely. And I'm excited for this too, because, I did notice that you've got to like, AI is just crawling the web. That's where it's getting, it's being taught. It's crawls it. It looks through all of it. And so agreed with you. have a lot of clients and like, we want the secret pill of marketing. And I might get your reviews up. Like it is constant and consistent that if you get those reviews up and you bring pieces to the table, that people literally like that's what's going to rank you higher. So I'm excited, Len to, to dig in deeper because it is like how   getting more reviews, but to hear that there's more beyond just the reviews really can help these offices like get the best bang for their buck, help more practices. And I'm like, it used to be when I first started consulting when I used to tell offices get to like 100 Google reviews. It is now I'm pushing people like five, six, 700 reviews that you need to be getting ranked into. And I don't know if you're seeing like a cutoff line or if it matters on that. So I'm really excited to dive into like, what are the rankings? What are the pieces? Is there a difference? But I'm like now   100 reviews, when I look at somebody I'm like, hmm, like if there's another dental practice that has maybe 400, 500 new clients come on, the first thing I do is I go look them up to see how many reviews do you have? And I'm shocked at how many dental practices actually are not showing up when I Google their names and they're like, no, no, care, we're here. And I'm like, but if I'm a prospective new client that doesn't work in your practice and I don't see you all the time and I just tried to find you and I'm looking for you.   How many patients who are not looking for you are not finding you as well. So yeah, take us away, and I'm super curious, very intrigued by this. It's fascinating. And I'll also say, because AI is new, feel like people got like a reset slate. Like, hey, you can actually get back into the game if you haven't been into the game, if you just start playing now. If you don't, I agree with you. I do think that you will unfortunately get obliterated without trying if you don't get into the game now.   Dr. Len Tau (13:28) 100 % so and I couldn't agree with you more. So the best thing to do here is if you're listening to this, I want you to go to a Google search and I want you to type your practice name in. Okay, so that's the first thing to do. Right.   Kiera Dent (13:39) and not in your office. Don't do it in   your office. Go somewhere else. Like try it somewhere else.   Dr. Len Tau (13:44) Right, well, and 100%, that's another thing is that if you're gonna look up your ranking specifically, you do not wanna do that from your office location, okay? Because you're not gonna get real results. You also wanna go into incognito mode or private browsing mode on your phone or your computer if you're doing that to check ranking. But this is not specifically about ranking. This is more about how you appear online. So go to Google and type in your practice name. Not your name unless it's the name of the practice, but your business name, okay?   Kiera Dent (13:52) Yes.   Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (14:13) and it doesn't have to be what's registered with the state board. It's how you, when you answer the phone, what you say, okay? Pennsylvania Center for Dental Excellence was my practice name, okay? So you wanna look yourself up. So these are some of the ranking factors that Google looks at. Obviously one of them is your total number of reviews you have. Definitely a ranking factor, but the total number has not been as important as some other factors as well. So.   Kiera Dent (14:20) Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (14:40) Average number of reviews in the industry right now is about 350. It used to be like 100 was the golden number. Now 350 is the average in the industry. So are you average? Are you below average or are above average? Okay, that's something to look at. The second ranking factor, which is even more important is the velocity of reviews. So how many reviews, how often you're getting them. Okay, so if you're getting once every two weeks, not enough. If you're getting them once every week,   Kiera Dent (14:46) Yes.   Dr. Len Tau (15:10) Not enough. You don't need them every single day, but two or three every single week is ideal. Okay, because you think two or three every week gives you eight to 15 a month times 12 months is 100 reviews a year, which is a nice number. Okay, so you have to have that velocity. All right. Third ranking factor is the total score, your average number of stars. So   I would like you to be anywhere from 4.6 to five stars. Okay. I don't think you have to be only five stars. think there's a negativity related to that. If you're only five star reviews, but I also don't want you to below 4.5. Okay. ⁓ And if you're at 4.3, 4.2, or even 4.1, another better review or two, and you're to be in the threes. And that's really where you don't want to go. Cause you lose a huge percentage of patients who may come in if you're less than four stars. Okay. Another ranking factor.   is the primary category. So how do you know your primary category? If you look under your Google, your name, will say right where the stars is, will say, hopefully dentist in your town or dentist in your county or dentist in your city. Okay. So your primary category should be dentist because we're a dental practice. Okay. If you're an oral surgeon, you may want it to be oral and actual facial surgeon. If you're an endodontist, want it to say endodontist. You don't want it to say dentist if you're a specialist. Okay.   ⁓ That's a big ranking factor and I'll give you an example. I, ⁓ my wife had some plastic surgery over the last couple of years and we were referred to that doctor. So we didn't need to search for him. We were referred to him. went in, we liked him, we used his services. ⁓ And of course, being a plastic surgeon, I talked to him about reviews. He now uses BirdEye, but he had me speak in an event that he holds down here in Boca Raton.   And I talked about this exactly. And I asked everybody, cause it was a small group. What is your primary category? And he goes, he said to me, literally, he says, I'm listed as a nurse practitioner. He wasn't listed as a plastic surgeon. He was listed as a nurse practitioner. So his categories were all messed up. So when you actually typed in plastic surgeon near me, he never showed up because his category was wrong. So primary category is a very important ranking factor as well. Now you also have to make sure your secondary categories are also. ⁓   Kiera Dent (17:15) No.   Dr. Len Tau (17:35) ⁓ under ⁓ are there as well as under the proper categories. So secondary categories, if you're a dentist, dental clinic, teeth whitening services, denture care center, orthodontist, if you're doing aligners, if you're endo, you're doing root canals, you can have endodontist. If you do periodontist, can do periodontist. You want to make sure you have nine secondary categories. Okay, if you don't have them, you want to add them.   Now, how do you add them? It's very easy. You go to Google using ChatGPT or anything and say, how do I add secondary categories to my Google business listing? Okay. It will tell you exactly like a recipe how to do it. You need to add those secondary categories. All right. And if you want help doing it, you can always reach out to me. The last ranking factor, which is really important is making sure that the practices name, address, and phone number is consistent. Okay. So just to be clear, most   website companies do not do local SEO. They do website SEO, which is making sure the website is SEOed so the website ranks higher on the organic rankings. We're talking about getting the Google business page ranking higher, which the website companies are not focused on. So when it comes to the name, address and phone number, is it consistent? You have to be consistent. And this is a Google requirement.   It is not a patient thing. It's not a me thing or you thing. It's a Google requirement that this data is consistent. So the name is obviously important. So if you have the and or the ampersand, you may find things inconsistent. When it comes to the address, if you have, you know, South State Streets, Unit 510, you can have South or S, you can have Street or ST, and then you can have Suite, Unit, Number, or STE.   All these variations need to be consistent. So one of them has to be done and one and stuck with. And then if you are using a tracking number for whatever reason on your Google business listing, you may find your inconsistent there as well. So when you make everything consistent and you get a higher velocity of reviews, guess what happens over time? You rank higher on the maps. And when you rank higher on the maps, you get more visible for patients to find you. So that's where the secret sauce is. And   Not that this is a sales pitch about BirdEye, but that's exactly what BirdEye does. BirdEye does those. We check all those boxes for you. And then what ends up happening is a practices get more reviews. But more importantly, when they ask patients how they find them, they're going to see that they found them because of their ranking online and the reviews drove them to the practice. So that's how this whole thing plays a role in getting a practice more visible and credible.   Kiera Dent (20:06) Thank   Wow. So I was over here like taking a lot of notes, which I really loved. I love the number, the 350 at the average, the velocity, like three to five per week you were saying. It doesn't need to be an everyday, but I do agree like them consistently coming through the total score, the 4.6 to five primary category, secondary category, making sure we have nine. And then you were talking about like the practice name, phone number, all of that has to be consistent. So the addresses have to be the same. And that's going to help you rank higher.   Did I miss anything? Those are my notes, Len. And I'm just curious, like, did I catch them all? Because there was a lot of pieces to consider. And then I have some follow ups as well. So like, did I miss anything in that list?   Dr. Len Tau (21:02) No, I   think you got it all there.   Kiera Dent (21:06) Okay, so hopefully that was a good recap for everybody. If you were listening, I tried to like summarize everything he said, because I really feel that those are super valuable pieces to know. Now, Len, there's a couple of things that happen and I'm very curious of what you've seen. Maybe you know, maybe you don't know. It's just a riff for me genuinely curious over here. Does it impact for the business to respond to the reviews? Because I know there was like a big misnomer out there like for a while, like you have to respond to every single review that helps you rank higher. What's the   What's kind of the lay of the land right now responding to the reviews that come in?   Dr. Len Tau (21:39) So there's been a big push over the years to respond to reviews. And there's also been those naysayers who don't want you to respond to reviews. So I want to make this very clear. When you respond to a review and you acknowledge them as a patient, you are technically violating HIPAA. Okay. Now by the letter of the law, if you do that, you violated HIPAA and can be in trouble. Now in all the years I've been doing this, I've only seen one   Kiera Dent (21:49) Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (22:08) example of a positive review being responded to and the dentist got in trouble. Okay. So if someone writes a review for you and it's five stars and you say, thank you so much for your feedback. We were glad you had a great experience in our practice. Okay. You technically violated HIPAA there because you acknowledged that they came into the practice. I don't think you'll ever run into any problems with that. I don't, I've never seen any instance when a, when a practice has got into trouble. But again, by the letter of the law, it's a violation.   Here's where the person ran into a problem. Okay. So the review in question, the patient wrote, I'm so happy with my appearance after I went to so-and-so's dental office. I think they were in Texas. The dentist responded, we're so happy that you, thank you so much for your review. We're so happy that you loved our magic needles. Okay. So it, from what I understand is the patient had Botox or   dermal fillers placed and that's what they call their magic needles. So the patient wrote, wrote a letter to the practice saying, I didn't appreciate you letting the world know that I had Botox done and asked for the review response to be taken down, which the dentist immediately did. Took it down and apologized, but it really pissed the patient off and the patient sued the dentist and won. Okay. Because the dentist went out of their way to   Kiera Dent (23:08) Mm-hmm.   Right.   Dr. Len Tau (23:33) you know, release private information that wasn't supposed to be done. So in that case, you shouldn't be doing that. Okay. Now on the same note, I would be very careful responding.   Kiera Dent (23:37) Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (23:45) to a review that's left by a negative, a negative review that's written by a patient. I would be very careful responding publicly to that because it's very hard to respond without violating HIPAA. So a simple response like, we're sorry to hear about your experience. Please contact the office to discuss the concerns as we're unfortunately unable to comment due to HIPAA release privacy stuff. That's fine. But.   Again, I just not sure it's the best thing to do. So you have to be careful with negative reviews. What it doesn't do is we really haven't found any relationship between responding and ranking. Okay, so you have to, I always leave it up to the people to respond. I like using AI to respond as well, because I think it comes up with HIPAA compliant and really good responses. ⁓ But you have to decide what you want to do for your own practice.   Kiera Dent (24:16) Mm-hmm.   Interesting.   That's actually really helpful to know. ⁓ Okay, good feedback for people to ponder and decide what they want to do on. The second piece is   some people lose their Google My Business and they're not able to be found. ⁓ And I don't know if you have reasons why. I don't know if it's from like a name change or it's inconsistent. So like a lot of offices have a lot of reviews, but when you go to search them, they're hidden on Google My Business. Like it will show up on the person's side, but nobody externally can find it. Do you have any ideas of like what causes that or what offices can do if they're struggling with that?   Dr. Len Tau (25:11) So I want to clarify that what question you asked there. I'm sorry to ask a question when you asked the question was when you say that you're saying that when they search for their Google business listing, they can't find it or when someone is searching for the office, they're not visible on the maps.   Kiera Dent (25:15) Hey, that's okay.   So when they're searching, so if I just go into Google and I type in like my perfect smile, the website might link, but the Google My Business with all, and they might have like 150 Google reviews, like it might be, like they've got them all and the office can see it when they like log in as like, this is, you own this, but they've lost it and it's no longer visible publicly. Do you know what causes that or how they can get that back? It's okay if you don't, I'm just genuinely curious. Cause I know some offices struggle with this, especially with like name changes of practices.   going through different ownerships. ⁓ Some of them have told me it's like when I changed the name of my practice, it no longer showed up. Like we have all these reviews, but we're not showing up. Do you know what causes that or how practices can get back being visible?   Dr. Len Tau (26:02) Yep. Now that you   asked it that way, so that usually means that your Google business listing has been suspended. And if you can't find it on search, but you see it, means it's suspended in most cases. Name changes, address changes, other things you do can cause it to be suspended. There are, if you look up on use chat GPT, ⁓   and say, why is, why can your Google business page be suspended? There is a list of different reasons why it can get suspended. ⁓ if you're getting reviews the wrong way is a big one. So, like you should not be incentivizing for reviews. And I'm talking about incentivizing the patients. You shouldn't be getting reviews in your physical office space because there's IP address conflicts and location services on the patient's phone. So if you're doing that, not only will you can potentially lose reviews, but you can't get it suspended, but you can look on.   Kiera Dent (26:37) Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (26:55) on chat GPT or Google and just say, what are the reasons that your business page can be suspended? And they're there. So usually you have to ⁓ re-approve it or re-verify that page. And there's certain things you do. You'll have to take a video of yourself in front of the practice, showing the address, showing the name of the business on the door. So there's things you will have to do to get it over to Google. So they'll re-verify you. And then once it happens, there's a good chance they'll unsuspend the listing. But that happens for that reason.   Kiera Dent (27:24) Gotcha. Okay. That's super helpful because I know a few offices have struggled with that. So was just curious for that. All right. This has been so helpful to figure out rankings. It's been helpful to understand. ⁓ My last question as we wrap up today on reviews has been so helpful, Len, is how do offices go about like, what are your recommendations? Yes, bird eye, swell, podium. Like there's a lot of review in Weave. I do, I usually recommend using an external one outside of things. think that they like, if they're just, if that's what they do, they're going to be experts at it.   But how can offices ethically and appropriately, like obviously great patient experience, but how do they increase these Google reviews? What are some of the best tactics you've seen to help these offices out?   Dr. Len Tau (28:04) So being biased, I mean, I'm a true believer in BirdEye because we help with the reviews and the ranking part. ⁓ Swell, which is a great product. know the guys who swell really well. A lot of their doctors don't rank well because they don't focus on the listings part of it or the ranking part of it. ⁓ I'm not a fan of Wee from a review perspective because they swell BirdEye and Podium, make it very easy. Weave doesn't. It's just the way we do it with our three other products. ⁓   I always say this, you can get reviews any way you want. The most effective is gonna be use some software, simple as that. But it all starts with the practice and it all starts with, I like to create a reputation culture in the practice, which means you know that every time a patient comes in the practice, that they're going to be evaluating you and reviewing you potentially. And you've gotta be on your best behavior, you've gotta put a happy smile on your face, you gotta treat them like they're the...   Kiera Dent (28:40) Mm-hmm.   Dr. Len Tau (29:00) king of the world, okay? You gotta roll out the red carpet. And if you don't do that, they may write a bad review, okay? But if you don't create that reputation culture, I think it's gonna be hard to get the practice to really accelerate the reviews. So creating that reputation culture using great verbiage skills. I love calling it feedback, not a review. If you call it a review, it sounds like you're begging for it. ⁓ The feedback conversation is much more comfortable to have. So, you know, it's an interesting situation, but if you don't ask, you don't get.   So you've got to ask. I think if you ask and you combine it with a really good software, you'll get a really good number of reviews. If you don't ask, you don't get. It's that simple.   Kiera Dent (29:30) Mm-hmm.   Yeah.   ⁓ well, that was so great. I appreciate this so much. And it's fun to hear about how AI is helping. It's fun to hear about how you still have to be great on Google. So ⁓ I just appreciate you. I appreciate you being here. I appreciate the knowledge you shared. appreciate for offices. I hope they take action and Len any last thoughts, how people can connect with you if they want more help on this. know ⁓ like truly in my opinion, this is the simplest marketing.
