Globally more and more organizations are moving to more agile ways of working. This has left the Project Management Offices (PMO) of the world in a little predicament. Either transform the way you work or be dissolved. With many variations of PMOs, it's nearly impossible to define a single solution, instead, let's look at some specific real-life examples of how traditional governance functions (aka PMOs) transitioned to more of an agile way of working. What can we learn from them and what can we do to improve the way we work moving forward. Join me as I take you behind the scenes of what we are seeing working with clients in this space for the last 5 years. Thank you for listening to this podcast. We welcome any feedback. These tips are based on my learnings trying to become a better Agile manager at Adevinta; an organization where Scrum and OKRs are strongly encouraged to use, but not always are we given the resources to glue them together on the best possible way. Specific content of the talk is included in the draft presentation.

Episode 35 of the Modern Agile Show features an interview with Ainsley Nies, a longstanding contributor to the Agile community, instructor of the Agile Management course at Golden Gate University and a co-author of the excellent book, “Liftoff: Start and Sustain Successful Agile Teams.” Ainsley and Josh discuss the benefits and nuances of chartering, an agile practice they both love and use frequently.
Chris Philipsen understands that “playbook” and “Agile” don’t necessarily go together but the title of his Agile2019 talk “A Playbook for an Agile Manager” was chosen on purpose. A consultant at Insight, Philipsen speaks the language of traditional managers who expect a “playbook” for how to effectively manage in an Agile organization as well as the language of Agile. He and our host, Agile coach Chris Murman at Accenture | SolutionsIQ, vibe on the differences between managing styles as well as personal and interpersonal coaching techniques. Philipsen invokes the McCarthy protocol of requesting to provide feedback and radiating intention – for which he provides many examples. Ultimately, he is more productive, happier and a better agilist for radiating intent for what he hopes to accomplish in a meeting, in a day and in life. Accenture | SolutionsIQ Chris Murman hosts at Agile2019 in Washington, D.C.

In this episode of Hack the Process we chat with Ron Lichty, who discovered his passion for technology early on, when he realized that programming in assembly language was easier for him than writing in English. And he knows the difference because he’s also worked as a journalist and published several books with co-authors. His most recent book, Managing the Unmanageable, is about how effective management can help software engineers achieve the ecstatic state of flow that Ron says coding in a productive environment can produce. We ask Ron about how he gravitated toward management despite his enthusiasm for programming, how and why he took his career from full-time employee to independent consultant, and what his experiences writing with co-authors have taught him about collaboration.

Holacracy is a fundamentally different “operating system” for organizations. Holacracy revolutionizes how a company is structured, how decisions are made, and how authority is distributed. Perhaps the best-known examples of companies who have adopted Holacracy are Zappos and David Allen Company. “No one reports to anyone anymore,” explains The Washington Post about Zappos. “Instead, employees […] For additional content and links, visit http://www.EngagingLeader.com

Show fifty features my interview with David J Anderson. We discussed agile management and many other topics. The interview was fascinating! I have decided to push it out into the feed as one whole file rather than breaking due to ensure the continuity of the conversation (no real break points).David J. Anderson leads a management consulting firm focused on improving performance of technology companies. He has many years management experience leading teams on agile software development projects. David was a founder of the agile movement through his involvement in the creation of Feature Driven Development. His first book, Agile Management for Software Engineering - Applying the Theory of Constraints for Business Results, published in 2003 by Prentice Hall, introduced many ideas from Lean and Theory of Constraints in to software engineering. He was also a founder of the APLN, a non-profit dedicated to improving management and leadership in technology companies. Recently David has been focusing his attention on business agility and enterprise scale agile software transitions through a synergy of the CMMI model for organizational maturity with Agile and Lean methods.Note that the Lean Kanban2009 Conference noted in the interview has been rescheduled to May 6 – 8.
