The prolonged ceasefire is a mistake after an initially successful campaign. We should have 2 weeks of massive strikes on IRGC targets and arm the Iranian people. Also, the Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, noted that Lebanon's official government and army are separate from the far more powerful Hezbollah, effectively creating two parallel governments and militaries. Now, amid Hezbollah's ongoing rocket fire (including during a ceasefire), Israel has re-entered to eliminate the threat permanently, focusing on Hezbollah's main base near Beirut. Aoun instructed defensive fighting only, avoiding Beirut. Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed Israel's sovereignty in protecting itself, rejecting any constraints. Later, Rep Byron Donalds calls in and reveals a direct death threat posted on social media, where someone stated they were going to kill him. While politics involves strong opinions, demonizing opponents as non-human erodes civility and can incite violence. The incident strengthened Donalds' resolve to pursue Florida's governorship and preserve the state as a conservative leader. The First Amendment’s church autonomy doctrine sets a structural constitutional barrier keeping the State from interfering in certain matters of a church. While the doctrine’s roots go deeper than even the nation’s Founding, how exactly it protects churches has recently and sharply divided courts. Some courts say it provides broad protections for matters falling within its scope—barring not only liability for removing a wayward minister, but also entangling and distracting litigation into the merits of that minister’s claims. But other courts—over a chorus of dissenting colleagues—have narrowed church autonomy to barring liability only. This has many important implications, including whether there can be a right of appeal when trial courts deny church autonomy defenses and send cases to entangling merits adjudication. The Supreme Court has been asked to clarify the contours of this doctrine in a case stemming from a class action lawsuit against the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that challenges how the Catholic Church has described and used Peter's Pence, an offering that has been given to the Pope for over 1,000 years. During the Pentagon press briefing alongside Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the two-week ceasefire with Iran as the result of a decisive U.S. military campaign. He stated, “Operation Epic Fury was a historic and overwhelming victory on the battlefield — a capital-V military victory,” claiming it decimated Iran's missile program, navy, and defense industry, rendering its military “combat-ineffective for years to come.” Hegseth added that “Iran begged for this ceasefire, and we all know it,” asserting the regime was “out of options and out of time.” He emphasized that U.S. forces are “not going anywhere,” saying “we'll be hanging around” in the region to monitor compliance, ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon, and remain “prepared to defend, prepared to go on offense,” and “restart at a moment's notice” if the truce fails. Hegseth noted that “it takes time sometimes for ceasefires to take hold” and framed the pause as giving “a chance at real peace and a real deal,” while praising President Trump for choosing “mercy” instead of further crippling Iran's economy.
