In addition to a career as a newspaper editor, publisher, and manager, Robb Grindstaff has written fiction most of his life. The newspaper biz has taken him and his family from Phoenix, Arizona, to small towns in North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin, from seven years in Washington, D.C., to five years in Asia. Born and raised a small-town kid, he's as comfortable in Tokyo or Tuna, Texas. The variety of places he's lived and visited serve as settings for the characters who invade his head. His novels are probably best classified as contemporary southern lit, and he's had more than twenty short stories published in a wide array of genres. His articles on the craft of fiction writing have appeared in various writer magazines and websites, and one of his seminars was presented at the Sydney (Australia) Writers Festival. He also has taught writing courses for the Romance Writers of America, Romance Writers of Australia, and the Novel-in-Progress writers retreat. Robb retired from the newspaper business in the summer of 2020 to write and edit fiction full time. He and his wife relocated to the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Robb also edits fiction and non-fiction books for authors from around the world. It helps that he's fluent in five languages: US English, UK English, Canadian English, and Australian English, plus his native language, Texan. Robb Grindstaff's books are available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, and many other online retailers. They are also available in paperback, e-book, and audiobook. TOPICS OF CONVERSATION Robb's writing journey All about Slade Writing a story using interviews The most surprising thing he discovered while writing Slade Being a fulltime writer, fiction editor and working with other authors What's next for Robb Grindstaff? SLADE Synopsis: A car crash thirty years earlier left Slade Bennington severely disabled but with a new outlook on life. His book about overcoming trauma becomes a bestseller and a box office hit movie. Slade strikes up an unusual friendship with Schuyler, the six-foot-tall teenage actress who portrays his sister in the movie. She encourages him to continue writing, and his pithy musings about life spur a nationwide following of devotees who study his books like Holy Scriptures. Slade becomes a counselor to the celebrity in-crowd—the Shaman to the Stars. While thousands adore Slade, others call him a Svengali or Rasputin-like character who controls and manipulates his clients. One disillusioned fan spends years plotting revenge.   CONNECT WITH ROBB GRINDSTAFF! In the late 19th century a man from Stoney Creek, in Johnson County, Tennessee, went West to seek his fortune. He found that fortune. He then lost that fortune and in the process decided that he no longer wanted the company of his fellow man, so he took what money he had left and purchased the top of an East Tennessee mountain on which to live, with his faithful dog and, for a time, with a pet rattlesnake.Today we tell the story of Uncle Nick Grindstaff, whose grave and monument still stand next to the Appalachian trail atop Iron Mountain for the entire world to visit, if they've a mind to.Be sure to subscribe to the Stories podcast on your favorite podcast app so you don't miss a single one of our stories. Thanks for listening...

Imagine a character waking you up with his story… that's how Robb Grindstaff describes writing his new novel SLADE. For me - talking to Robb about writing SLADE was a meta moment - interviewing an author about his life and his book that is about interviewing an author about his book and his life. Turns out interviewing skills are all over Robb's resume. The newspaper biz took him from small town Wisconsin to Washington DC. He describes himself as a small town kid who's as comfortable in Tokyo as he is in Tuna, TX. Listen to the advice Robb got from music legend Art Garfunkel and find out how it made it into the story. And, hear narrator Timothy G Little's big voice. His performance as SLADE is mesmerizing. And, he matches Robb in the fun facts category. Between his corporate jobs and his literary life Timothy has lived in Turkey, Greece, Costa Rica, Spain, and Italy. He's narrated about 50 titles with his resonant tone. You can find every novel Robb's written on his website. One of the first questions new clients ask is what to wear for a photo shoot. The Style and Select service makes styling your clients with carefully coordinated outfits easy and convenient.Introduction (1:53)How did Style and Select come to be? (4:46)We always had to extensively guide our clients on what to wear for a photo shoot, so we knew helping other photographers to do this too would be useful. How often are items refreshed? (10:14)Constantly – we are scouring retailers and adding items every day. How does the service help clients decide what to wear for a photo shoot? (12:55)You can give clients a styling code and allow them to style themselves, or you can style a client yourself and send that as a guide to your clients. The client can shop from the results. You can also include your own client closet. What are the essential items when starting a client closet? (17:46)Start small with accessories – hats, headbands, etc. Then add items in neutral colours, like size medium dresses with tie waists that can accommodate a wide variety of sizes. Get neutral kids’ pieces from big box stores.Which sites can you recommend that are budget-friendly? (21:10)See resource guide. Are there scam sites to avoid? (22:32)There are lots. Check their social media and reviews for client feedback. Be wary of any sites with heads cut off.How do you decide which clothing sites to include? (25:33)We partner with both big box stores and boutiques. We choose retailers that can maintain stock levels, and that carry flattering clothing that photographs well.Do people ask you to source clothing from photos? (28:56)Yes, but the true value is discovering more stores, and seeing the choices together. What is your pick for hit dress of the season? (32:39)The Vici Anika dress is really popular right now with photographers because it is so versatile.Do most of your male clients follow the suggestions? (36:33)Men tend to want to stay in jeans. Have them wear one thing of their own, then style the rest.Where can we find out more about Style and Select? (38:59)Check out our website and IGTV.What are you creatively curious about? The different species of Galapagos finches, with their specially evolved beaks that allow them to eat specific foods, helped Charles Darwin understand that organisms can evolve over time to better survive in their environment. Now, nearly 200 years later and thousands of miles away, biologists are learning some surprising lessons about evolution from northern Norwegian populations of the humble house sparrow (Passer domesticus).Darwin's finches evolved on the exotic, volcanic Galapagos Islands. NTNU's house sparrows are dispersed over a group of 18 islands in Helgeland, in an archipelago that straddles the Arctic Circle.Every summer since 1993, when NTNU Professor Bernt-Erik Sæther initiated the House Sparrow Project, a group of biologists has travelled to the islands collect data on the sparrows. They capture baby birds, measure different parts of their bodies, take a tiny blood sample, and then put a unique combination of coloured rings on their legs that help researchers identify the birds throughout their lifetime. Those decades of research have given researchers information that can be helpful in managing threatened and endangered species. They have also done some experiments where they made evolution happen in real time — and then watched what happened when they let nature run its course. And then there was the series of experiments where they learned more than you might want to know about sparrow dating preferences, and about rogue sparrow fathers who court exhausted sparrow mothers — and then fathered children with the cute little she-bird next door. Our guests for today's show were Henrik Jensen, Thor Harald Ringsby and Stefanie Muff. You can find a transcript of the show here. Christian is a natural critical thinker, learner, who candidly and clearly shares his journey of growing to understand love. Romance, religion, experience, science, and psychology all give us definitions of love, but is there a definition that makes sense for all of us? Do our personal definitions of love cause us to put expectations on others? Why do we consistently see only our idea of love as the truth? This is part two of a conversation with Christian Grindstaff. In our first conversation, we covered a lot of ground. We reminisced about our times together in the Christian institutional church, how I kicked Christian out of youth ministry, and where we're going now and how we're trying to do it together. He's known me longer than my wife, he's a great conversationist and a great drinking buddy. Apparently Christian and I are reaching the bottom of the bottle of Rye at this point. I even end up spilling beer in the middle of our conversation cause I talk with my hands; of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that we've drunk almost a 5th of whiskey together. Right? There's a strong "God believer" factor in this slightly drunken episode of questioning everything and offending almost anyone, including ourselves. We discuss a lot of topics, from how humanities access to information these days gives us the ability to grow and educate ourselves far beyond greater generations. How that fact creates an opportunity to question leaders and authority over us in a way our parents may not have been able to. We even get into a little laughing about Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders Our view of White Privilege and the Black Lives Matter movement has changed much over the years, and Christian seems to have a fascination with Canada and the new Candian Prime Minister, who has chosen a truly diverse Cabinet. This Episode ends much differently than any other on LOR so far. Christian explains the song he has recently written about his journey out of religion and he shares the hope he has. That if God does exist, that he is a lot different than Christian was ever shown through the church. "If you're afraid to explore other ideas, other people, or other things then you are more than likely bound to what you believe and are in religion." - Christian Grindstaff   Join the CounterCulture Society: http://eepurl.com/bwqMWT   Become a Producer: https://www.patreon.com/losingourreligion   Find Out More: http://www.losingourreligion.org   This Episode's Landing Page: http://www.losingourreligion.org/episodes/2016/2/8/episode-029-maybe-theres-something-more-part-2-christian-grindstaff   Twitter: https://twitter.com/LosingRReligion   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LosingOurReligion   Thanks to Danny E.B. Christian is a talented songwriter and music producer. In fact, almost all of the music in the episode is Christian's work. He is a salesman by trade, extremely articulate with his words and a great drinking buddy. Christian has known me longer than my wife has. We have a lot of history together. We've been through the institutional church fire together and come out the other side enlightened, sometimes confused, full of questions, but happier than ever. There have been few people in either of our lives that have caused us more frustration and anger, but continual support and love for one another. We're always honest with each other. We fight it out and find a way to respect, love, and hug each other in the end. We rarely agree with each other - which is great. In these episodes with Christian, we reminisce about our times together in the Christian institutional church, how I kicked Christian out of youth ministry, and where we're going now and how we're trying to do it together. We talk about everything from our past lives in the institution to our slow transition from once being Evangelical Conservative Republicans to now Liberal Democrat Socialists and how it happened. As well as our personal convictions, how we saw and I used my past "Christian" leadership to impose personal dogmas onto congregations and people. We even get into the lie that our old church Christian Faith Center in Washington consistently preaches of happiness, prosperity, and the good life being what Jesus gives you. Hmmmm? Sounds a lot like Christian's sales pitch for a timeshare presentation. (All of Christian's music can be found on this episodes landing page below.)
