That's oftentimes when resentment comes up. Part of not knowing is being able to open to what's really there, who the person really is right in this moment." – Kimberly BrownAbout Kimberly Brown:Kimberly Brown is a popular Buddhist meditation teacher and Certified Mindfulness Instructor and since 2011 she has led thousands of classes, retreats, and workshops with individuals and groups merging self-compassion, emotional resilience, mindfulness, and Buddhism. Do you expect other people to make you happy? To go into relationships hoping they will make you happy? If so, you definitely want to check out Episode 528!The thoughts we have have so much to do with our own happiness and also the fate of our relationships. What percentage of your day is spent inside of your own head?  Maybe creating scenarios, ruminating over past stuff, or trying to mind read what someone else is thinking?  I dont think she likes me.  They think Im no fun.  I think he's mad at me.  They're too busy to spend time with me.  Im not important to them.  What percentage of your day is spent embroiled in inner dialogue with yourself and inner dialogue about other people?  If they say this, I would say that or I should have said this when they said that.  We create the life we are living right inside our heads.  It's a good thing to be aware of because it's the reason we are doing any of the things we do and it's affecting every relationship we have either in a good way or a bad way especially the one we have with ourselves.I love you guys!

Once again, it is time for a refresher course inspired by the teaching of four-time podcast guest John Gray, the #1 bestselling relationship author of all-time with his Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus franchise. In this highlight episode, you will hear life-changing advice and insights into relationship health, including the specific “assignments” John Gray has designated for men and women and why. You will learn about the importance of being a “Kung Fu Master”, why men should never speak when they have a negative emotional charge, and the #1 danger women face today. I also include tips from author David Deida, talk about the effects of complaining or nitpicking and what happens when you instead express everything as a preference, and how to overcome emotionally fragile reactions. You will also learn what causes arguments to escalate, why women just need to vent, what kills the passion in a relationship, what causes women to end up anxious and depressed, and more details about the different fundamental biological drives and hormonal underpinnings that influence our behavior and wants and needs. TIMESTAMPS: After the first two highlight podcasts, Brad looks at relationship insights. [01:04] The male’s relationship assignment is to be a kung fu master by remaining calm, cool and collected. [02:43] The female needs to vent, to talk out her problems, concerns, challenges, and complaints. [09:55] Leave the petty grievances alone. Decide what is really important. [14:59] The female should never complain and nitpick your male partner. [18:11] You are responsible for your own happiness. You cannot depend on another person to make you happy. [20:10] The evolving culture and evolving relationship roles lead to challenges, mainly with the female. [23:23] Another dynamic is the increased isolation of society. [26:16] John Gray’s anatomy of an argument: Female feels unhappy and starts to feel disconnected. The males responds by telling her why she shouldn’t feel that way. Is everything you've been told about finding the perfect partner missing the mark? Beyond mere attraction, what really makes relationships endure? Today, Dr. Darren M. George joins us to challenge conventional wisdom and unveil surprising truths that can reshape your understanding of love.   As a professor of psychology, researcher, and co-author of The Compatibility Code, Dr. George has spent decades exploring what truly makes relationships thrive. His insights offer a compelling roadmap for navigating the complexities of partner choice and cultivating lasting, meaningful connections.    Join us as we explore these groundbreaking ideas and consider new perspectives to enhance your love life!   “The younger you marry, the greater the likelihood of change, which will render you incompatible. I find, for instance, when I teach the class on marital compatibility, some years ago, if there is an 18-year-old who'd never dated, she would be so naïve they couldn't even benefit from it because they hadn't experienced enough life to know that. In that sense, that's why teen marriages have a very high non-success rate, because there is no identity. But here's the deal… In the in-love phase, you're intensely emotionally engaged. But in love, according to research, it lasts, on average, about two years. So what happens is you go a year and a half, you start dating someone, you fall in love with them. You go a year and a half; you get married. You got six months to go. What are you going to do for the next 59 and a half years? How are you going to keep that flame alive? How are you going to keep that relationship vibrant?” - Dr. Darren George   What we discuss in this episode: - Key elements for building successful relationships. - Balancing personal growth with relationship dynamics. - The value of developing a strong identity before entering a committed relationship. - Understanding why people often choose the wrong partner repeatedly and how to break the cycle. - Strategies for healing after the end of a long-term relationship. - Techniques to reduce conflict, maintain harmony, and keep your relationship vibrant. - The strongest predictor of a healthy marriage.   Resources: - The Compatibility Code: Amazon.com: The Compatibility Code: An Intelligent Woman's Guide to Dating and Marriage. The Secret Formula to Happy Relationships

Did you know there's a secret formula for making your relationships happier and stronger? Yes, it's true! There is a secret formula to happy relationships. Today, I'm going to teach you how to apply this magic ratio in your life with your kids, your husband, your friends, and even at work.  Dr. John Gottman, the foremost relationship expert, discovered in his research, that in the happiest, healthiest relationships there are five positive interactions for every one interaction. Dr. Gottman's research shows that couples that maintain this positive ratio are much more likely to stay together and be happy.  Conflict is not in and of itself a bad thing. It just means you're living in the world. But when negativity or conflict arises you want to pile on the positives.  In my book Remaining You While Raising Them I talk about the magic ratio and piling on the positives, big and little. In the book I also talk about friendships. Friendships thrive on positivity. When they need you, be there for them, make some fun plans to hang out with them. These interactions will strengthen your bond. For our kids it's as simple as playing their game, reading a bedtime story, or watching a movie with them. Whether they're five or twenty-five, pile on the positives so that when negativity comes, it balances out. Our husbands and boyfriends need the positives too. It can be something as easy as sending a really fun text in the middle of the day, planning a surprise date, or getting his favorite candy. Make a point to do something nice for him which is investing in your marriage account. At work, continually recognizing small achievements of team members as often as possible. Not only will this boost morale but it also increases productivity. When you have to have a tough conversation, you've invested in that person, so you're balancing out the five to one ratio. Balancing out with the five to one ratio helps keep relationships healthier and helps them thrive. Favorite Quotes:  00:53 - “Dr. John Gottman, the foremost relationship expert, discovered through his research that in the healthiest, happiest relationships, there are five positive interactions for every one negative interaction. This doesn't mean we ignore the negative, but we balance it with more good moments.” 6:52  - “Focusing on creating more positive interactions, we keep our relationships healthier and help them thrive.” 7:11 - “Giving ourselves grace is so important here. Remember, we don't have to be perfect. We just need to be present and willing to create those positive moments.” 11:02  - “Another great way to foster positive interactions is to celebrate successes, big and small. Whether it's completing a project on time or someone going above and beyond, acknowledging these moments will boost morale and encourage a positive environment.” 11:46 - “Learning the five to one ratio and piling on the positives will help you continue to build your optimism, your joy and your peace everyday. Piling on the positives helps you cultivate kindness in all your interactions. You do more stuff for others that genuinely makes a difference in their lives.” Links to Great Things: Create a Course Remaining You While Raising Them Alli on YouTube Little Things StudioLittle Things Studio is a woman-owned small business bringing daily reminders of beauty and truth to your home and life. The Four Agreements has been for over a couple of decades a best seller of all time and has sold over 9 million copies in the US alone and 46 languages worldwide.  Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. is the son of Don Miguel Ruiz Sr. the author of the best selling book The Four Agreements. From that early age, he was called upon to translate his grandmother's prayers, lectures and workshops from Spanish into English. In this way, through constant repetition and review, he learned the content of her teachings in both languages. He has written 5 best selling books sharing the wisdom and tools from the family's tradition : “The Five Levels of Attachment”, “Living a Life of Awareness”, “The Mastery of Self”, and “The Don Miguel Ruiz's Little Book of Wisdom”. It's important to do what's right for your relationship. Scientific evidence suggests that living apart could really strengthen a long-term relationship. Are you great partners but terrible roommates? You two make a great team, but do you have different ideas about what success means? Is it essential to you NOT to blend families?  A successful connection means different things to different people, as gender roles, parenthood, and cultural background all play a role in relationships. What was once a deal breaker may now be an opportunity to adapt to modern society. We are here to destigmatize the negativity of going against the "norm."  Have any questions for us? You ask, you get it!  This week on Doing Relationships Right, Jim Healey is BACK, and we are discussing LIVING APART TOGETHER- a growing trend. And one that we have been doing since we met in 2017! It has worked for us, but can it work for YOU? Listen to our conversation and hear the pros and cons; doing what suits your relationship is essential. Scientific evidence shows that living apart may significantly strengthen a long-term relationship. Are you great partners but terrible roommates? Are you great partners but with different definitions of success? Is it essential to you NOT to blend families?  A successful connection means different things to different people, as gender roles, parenthood, and cultural background all play a role in relationships. What was once a deal breaker may now be an opportunity to adapt to modern society. We are here to destigmatize the negativity of going against the "norm."  Have any questions for us? Please feel free to DM me- remember, it's okay to try different ways of doing things! Read more about The Unblended Family, Nesting, and Living Apart Together in my books- One Happy Divorce, Woulda. How can you own your own voice? [24:50] Unfortunately for addicts, they've hurt their best friend and partner and so they can not depend on this person (right now) for emotional support.  [31:10] What do we unwillingly enable in someone else because of our own baggage and history?  [34:35] You've consciously chosen to stay, now what?  [40:45] Lucy talks about disclosed non-monogamy and what that means for a couple.   [46:15] If your personality is being crushed and you're becoming a former version of yourself, when should you stop everything and listen?
