In this episode, Jeannette talks to the entrepreneur and rugby star Paul Thorburn, who played 300 matches for Neath and 37 international matches for Wales, 10 of them as captain. He holds the record for the longest successful kick in an international test match. He gained the record during the 1986 Five Nations Championship at Cardiff Arms Park against Scotland. His penalty kick measured exactly 64.2 metres. He explains the role that having a winning mindset had in his sporting success and how he has applied what he learned while playing rugby to the world of business. Paul shares the details of his journey through life, so far. Including, how despite initially failing his A levels he resat and passed them so that he could attend Swansea university. There he got access to high-level coaching, which enabled him to excel at the sport he loved. Paul also explains how he prepared himself to become a successful entrepreneur and business consultant once his sporting career was over. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being in the right place at the right time plays a role in a successful career. But you have to recognise and take the opportunities. Team sport benefits people in many ways. You form strong, long-lasting relationships with your teammates. Having a winning mindset only produces results if you are disciplined about your training and preparation. Analysing your performance is an essential component of personal growth. Put any personal differences with team members aside and respect them. Employing experts to take care of different aspects of your business is vital. If you have an aspiration, go for it. Be true to yourself and give people the respect you would like to receive yourself. BEST MOMENTS ‘You make your own luck. ´ ‘Neath was the first (rugby) club to start having individual performance analysis.' ‘I apply the same (business) principles, regardless of my clients sector. A business is a business.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Today's guest is the incredible Linda Cruse. She is a woman who has made a clear and conscious decision to make her ‘earth walk' count in every moment of every day. Linda is a frontline humanitarian, leadership expert and author of ‘Leading on the Frontline – Remarkable stories and essential leadership lessons from the world's danger zones. She is also the founder of an incredible initiative called Race For Good A Global Youth League that mobilises students to engage in high-impact learning and develop practical problem-solving skills as they tackle real-life critical issues.Linda has worked alongside some of the world's most influential figures including HH The Dalai Lama, Sir Richard Branson and HRH The Prince of Wales, and with companies, foundations and universities including GSK, Virgin Unite, Cadbury, Rabobank, KPMG, Merrill Lynch, the World Bank.Linda's journey into creating a purposeful life by design, began in 1996 when she was a stressed-out mum working in a job she hated. She was driving along a motorway in the middle of the night when she suffered temporary blindness. This terrifying episode led to a blinding insight: what is the point of living if life has no point? Determined to make a difference, Linda started a new life. This was the start of a scary, lonely, but always emotionally fulfilling job: teaching skills and bringing aid – and, above all, love – to war-torn refugees, the poverty-stricken and the victims of disaster. The essence of Linda's message is what she calls “A Hand Up not A Hand Out”. She would far rather empower people and communities to create sustainable change by leveraging partnerships with groups of highly successful individuals – typically senior executives in global corporations, successful entrepreneurs – taking them to some of the remotest parts of the world where communities struggle to either overcome natural, or man-made, disasters or to make the most of their existing resources. The idea is that so much more can be achieved with innovative minds solving problems, as opposed to only handing over the dollars. When I talk about being on the front line of purposeful living, Linda has faced death on more than one occasion but she has never given up on her mission. Her ultimate aim is to inspire others to do what they can. And on that note, I have no doubt that this episode will inspire you to not only reach for your pocket in supporting causes you are passionate about but to use your head and your heart to be an active participant in the change that you seek. Welcome to the DNA Of Purpose Podcast.

Welcome to the final episode of our Black History Month special with guest, Carlton King Born the son of West Indian parents in a 1950's northern English mill town, Carlton King would in the early 1970's be offered the opportunity to sign as a professional footballer for the local third division club. Rejecting this offer, after sixth form, Carlton would first work as an electrical engineer, before working as a professional club DJ in Germany. Later still Carlton would become Britain's highest ranking Black secret intelligence officer. Carlton would spend more than a quarter of century in Scotland Yard's Special Branch (MPSB), Her Majesty's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), the NPOIU (National Public Order Intelligence Unit) and SO1 Specialist Protection Unit. In these units Carlton would be engaged in countless national security and secret intelligence operations at home & abroad, including in warzones and the playgrounds of the rich and famous. Consequently, Carlton was known to many world leaders, from Blair to the Clintons', Schroeder to Sir John Major, Shimon Peres to Angela Merkel, HRH The Prince of Wales to Princess Diana. Carlton has worked with most nations' specialist police, secret intelligence and national security agencies and military special-forces. Hence, Carlton's operations have spanned the Cold War, the IRA years, the wars in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, the covert war on terror and the struggles against extreme left-wing, extreme right-wing, activist Animal Liberation and subversive public disorder operations in London, the UK and beyond. For several years Carlton was a highly successful MI6 counter-terrorism case officer. Case Officers are the top quarter of MI6 officers who, for want of a better description, perform the real life James Bond role. In todays episode join me a whistle stop tour into our forgotten Black History: Who decided who was Black & who was white? • Is your DNA really white? • How Black people contributed to Hadrian's Wall, the Egyptian Empire and the Roman Empire • Was Queen Elizabeth 1st racist? • The role of Black men in the 2nd world war • and the great Windrush myth For more information see FB @Carlton King Author Twitter @Carlton_King Patreon.com/TheBlackSpyPodcast Carlton is a CNN, CNN International and other broadcast TV news station contributor: https://vimeo.com/232810114 https://youtu.be/Y9KvHapnYVk http://snpy.tv/2nLlJzX He has also appeared on LBC and many other radio and streaming news outlets as well as podcasts. Last month I was extremely privileged to join with a panel of 6 esteemed historians in a meeting with HRH The Prince of Wales in Belfast City Hall. The location was significant because almost exactly 100 years previous, King George V (Charles' great grandfather) visited Belfast to open Northern Ireland's first parliament in the same building. Charles was acutely aware of his great grandfather's contribution and invited historians to comment on the impact made by King George's speech in the context of island-wide violence and tumultuous Irish politics. The event will be commemorated by Belfast City Council on Tuesday 22nd June when a re-creation of the speech will be made for a live stream. There will also be an unveiling of two chairs, used on that day by King George V and Queen Mary which have since undergone some specialist conservation work. A talk on the matter will also be provided by the brilliant Dr Eamon Phoenix, and finally a performance of a specially commissioned play by Terra Nova productions which will explore the speech in more dramatic detail.Had I been aware of all this before I started researching the episode I probably wouldn't have written it, but nevertheless I'm here now and so are you – so here it is, Episode 16: The King's Speech.
In this episode, Richard Dunne speaks to Advisor to The Harmony Project, Professor David Cadman. During the podcast David discusses his upbringing as a Quaker, the lessons he learnt during his time at boarding school, the evolution of his career in estate management and his work with HRH The Prince of Wales (following the Toxteth Riots of 1981), which led to his ongoing work with The Prince's Foundation. Richard asks David about his understanding of Harmony and his new School of Love: "Harmony is constantly fluid and flowing and in movement from and towards. It is always seeking to find a point of equilibrium even if we don't rest upon it for very long" explains David. "The shaping force of that moment is love". David is also a visiting professor at the University of Maryland, USA, a Harmony Professor of Practice at the University of Wales Trinity St David, a fellow of the Temenos Academy and Harmony Advisor to The Prince's Foundation. David has most recently been writing a trilogy under the pseudonym of William Blyghton, the first part of which was published in 2017 under the title of The House by the Marsh.
