Wie schmeckt Hamburg? Und wo geht die Gastro-Szene selbst essen? Um das herauszufinden, bin ich losgezogen – quer durch die Stadt. Ich habe mich verabredet auf dem Isemarkt zwischen Austernstand und Gemüsekisten, in einer Marktkneipe, im Auto auf dem Weg zum nächsten Termin oder im Vorratskeller zwischen Weinflaschen und Eingemachtem. 14 Begegnungen, 14 Gespräche – und 14 ganz persönliche Perspektiven auf den Geschmack dieser Stadt. Mich hat interessiert: Wo geht ihr selbst gern essen? Welches Restaurant würdet ihr empfehlen, wenn jemand nur einen Abend in Hamburg hat? Und welche Gerichte oder Geschmäcker fallen euch als erstes ein, wenn ihr an diese Stadt denkt? Für manche beginnt Hamburg salzig – mit einer Brise Hafenluft. Andere schmecken Süße, Säure, eine klare, fast herbe Frische. Da ist Weite, da ist Wasser, da ist manchmal auch eine gewisse Rauheit. Und zugleich eine Stadt, die sehr international schmeckt. Über 50 Adressen sind zusammengekommen – vom Mittagstisch bis zum Sternerestaurant. Häufig gefallen, sind Namen wie das Fischereihafen-Restaurant, 100/200, Witwenball, Landhaus Scherrer, Dim Sum Haus, XO Seafoodbar, O-ren Ishii, Jing Jing und der Grill im Vier Jahreszeiten. Doch es geht um mehr als um einzelne Orte. Es geht um Authentizität, Kontinuität, um den Service, um gleichbleibende Qualität, um Atmosphäre und Gastfreundschaft – um das, was einen Ort besonders macht. JingJing Zhong, the Co-founder and CEO of Superbench and Jeremy Au discussed: AI Impact on Service Businesses: JingJing explained how AI advancements have transformed traditional service industries. Previously, AI struggled with logic and calculations, making it unreliable for tasks like generating service quotes. Now, improved reasoning allows AI to think through multi-step processes, reducing human workload and increasing efficiency. Superbench helps businesses like cleaning and plumbing services scale without needing more employees. She shared how her former company, Helpling, reduced its sales team from five agents to one while increasing conversion rates from 30% to 70%. CRM vs. RAG Reality: JingJing pointed out that traditional CRM systems don't integrate well with AI-driven customer support. She introduced Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) as a way to improve AI accuracy by linking responses to verified business knowledge before generating answers. Many AI chatbots still struggle with anything beyond FAQs and simple transactions, particularly in handling complaints. She predicts AI will advance even faster in the next two years, further reshaping service industries. Customers now assume AI agents are human because AI responses feel more natural than scripted templates used by actual employees. Founder Productivity Lifestyle: JingJing reflected on how managing stress as a founder led her to restructure her daily habits. She quit alcohol, shifted to a healthier diet with more vegetarian meals, and committed to consistent journaling. She noted that these changes had a direct impact on her business performance, saying that after quitting alcohol, her sales "went crazy." She emphasized the importance of therapy for founders, citing YC President Gary Tan's advice: “Do therapy before you start a company.” She believes founders should address their fears and anxieties early to avoid making poor decisions under pressure. Jeremy and JingJing also talked about startup fraud cases like eFishery, the effects of investor ghosting in Southeast Asia, and cultural differences in venture capital practices between the U.S. and Southeast Asia. Jingjing Zhong, CEO & Cofounder of Superbench, and Jeremy Au talked about three main themes: 1. UC Berkeley to Investment Banking: Jingjing reflected on her time at UC Berkeley where the competitive environment introduced her to the high-stakes world of investment banking. She shared her initial motivation for joining Houlihan Lokey, which was to make money (influenced by societal expectations from her upbringing in China). Her experience in the financial sector led to a significant reevaluation of her definition of success and steered her away from banking despite its financial allure. 2. General Manager Firefighting: Jingjing's entrance to high-growth startup Helpling and eventual promotion to General Manager brought immediate challenges of operational management without initial support (a sharp contrast with the structured world of finance). She navigated intense periods of firefighting and strategic planning and learned to balance immediate problem-solving with long-term strategic thinking. Her experiences emphasized the importance of adapting to market and consumer trends and the transformative impact of effective coaching on her leadership skills. 3. Superbench Services AI Founder: Jingjing leveraged her experiences to cofound Superbench, an AI-driven platform aimed at optimizing operations for home service businesses. She detailed the transition from manual operations to AI-enhanced processes, which significantly improved sales conversions and operational efficiency. She discusses the nuanced applications of AI, where it complements human effort rather than replacing it, along with the practical benefits and challenges of integrating advanced technologies in traditional SME clients. Jeremy and Jingjing also talked about Jingjing's cultural adjustments when she moved from USA to Singapore, the critical role of mentorship, and the role of data in strategic decision-making within service businesses. Învăţaţi franceza cu Jing, o tânără liceană chineză. Jing e de părere că viaţa de zi cu zi e diferită în Franţa comparativ cu China. Aici trebuie să stabileşti întâlniri pentru orice şi chiar şi atunci trebuie să-ţi aştepţi rândul. Suntem in biroul lui Nathalie Serfaty, directoarea agenţiei VAP (asistentul dumneavoastra personal). Ritmul vieţii în Paris : metro, slujbă, somn Métro, boulot, dodo est une expression inspirée d'un poème de Pierre Béarn datant de 1951 :« Au déboulé garçon pointe ton numéroPour gagner ainsi le salaireD'un morne jour utilitaireMétro, boulot, bistro, mégots, dodo, zéro »Cette expression est souvent utilisée pour résumer le rythme quotidien des Parisiens, ou plus généralement des citadins :  « métro » : c'est le trajet en métro le matin et le soir, « boulot » : c'est la journée de travail, « dodo » : c'est la nuit de sommeil. La journée type des Parisiens : Le matin, pour arriver au travail, les Parisiens ont au moins une heure de trajet dans les transports en commun, qui sont bondés. S'ils prennent la voiture, ils restent bloqués dans les embouteillages ! S'ils ont des enfants, il faut courir le matin pour les déposer à la crèche ou à l'école à 8 heures avant d'aller travailler. La journée de travail commence vers 9h et se termine vers 17h ou 18h. Les salariés ont une pause-déjeuner d'une heure. Ils mangent à la cantine de leur bureau ou dans un restaurant proche de leur lieu de travail. Le soir, ils ont à nouveau une heure de trajet pour rentrer à la maison. Le lendemain, ils recommencent !  Le week-end : on fait les courses, on range la maison, on fait les lessives, on s'occupe des papiers administratifs (factures, banque…), des activités des enfants… et s'il reste une peu de temps, on fait une sortie au parc, au cinéma ou un repas avec la famille ou les amis. Organizarea unui rendez-vousOn prend obligatoirement rendez-vous : auprès des services de santé : le médecin, le dentiste, le spécialiste, l'hôpital, etc. pour obtenir un conseil financier, juridique, etc : à la banque, chez l'avocat, chez le juge. pour s'occuper de sa beauté : chez le coiffeur, l'esthéticienne, le masseur, le tatoueur, le podologue. pour trouver un emploi : avec le conseiller du Pôle emploi, avec un service de ressources humaines, avec un service d'intérim.  On prend rendez-vous pour gagner du temps, pour certaines démarches administratives : à la poste, à la mairie, à la préfecture, au commissariat de police.Si on n'a pas pris rendez-vous, il vaut mieux s'adresser aux services administratifs en semaine pendant les heures creuses : éviter l'heure du déjeuner, la sortie des bureaux et le samedi. Întrebarea formulată de JingJing : Et j'aimerais savoir pourquoi, en France, il faut prendre des rendez-vous ? C'est-à-dire que les gens n'aiment pas attendre… Comme ça, la journée est organisée, c'est planifié, on a une vision des choses, je ne sais pas… c'est peut-être rassurant.Jing : Même si je prends rendez-vous avec un médecin, et quand j'arrive, il faut attendre encore !Madame Serfaty : Alors, effectivement, vous avez raison, parfois, on attend chez le médecin, mais on va attendre un quart d'heure, une demi-heure, bon… parfois, il y a des médecins qui prennent toujours en retard, c'est vrai ! Mais on ne peut pas s'absenter une journée entière pour aller chez le médecin !Jing : Est-ce qu'on doit prendre rendez-vous sur toutes les choses qu'on va  faire, comme la banque, la poste ?Madame Serfaty : Vous pouvez prendre rendez-vous partout, maintenant c'est généralisé. Mais en fait, vous pouvez aller à la banque sans rendez-vous, vous pouvez aller à la poste sans rendez-vous, vous pouvez aller à la préfecture sans rendez-vous, vous pouvez aller partout sans rendez-vous, d'accord, à vos risques et périls, c'est-à-dire que là, vous risquez d'attendre longtemps.Donc, maintenant, ce qu'ils proposent dans toutes les administrations, c'est que vous preniez rendez-vous. This episode features two colleagues having a discussion about gender in East Asian Religions. The first guest, Jingjing Li, is a University Lecturer in Chinese and Comparative Philosophy at Leiden University. Her primary work examines theories of mind and consciousness across East Asian and Continental traditions, particularly Chinese Wei Shi philosophy and Edmund Husserl's phenomenology, respectively. The second guest, Yingruo Show, was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore and now serves as Research Coordinator with the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC). She specializes in the intersection of gender and Chinese Buddhist practice. Earlier this summer, Jingjing and Yingruo led an international workshop here in Leiden entitled “Re-staging the Periphery as the Center: Women Communities in East Asian Religions.” The interdisciplinary event was organized by the Leiden University Center for Intercultural Philosophy (LUCIP) with the support of the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS). The workshop also received generous funding from the Leiden University Fund and the Dutch Research Council (NWO)'s Veni programme. In the following conversation, Jingjing and Yingruo discuss the event as well as the special issue of the journal Religions that they co-edited earlier in the year. In the course of our discussion, they touch on a variety of topics, including canonical religious texts, lay and monastic practices in East Asia, philosophies of mind, and how all of these are both challenged and invigorated through an interdisciplinary analysis of gender. Comparing Husserl's Phenomenology and Chinese Yogacara in a Multicultural World: A Journey Beyond Orientalism by Jingjing Li (Bloomsbury, 2022) starts its investigation with a longstanding question in the comparative studies of phenomenology and Yogacara. While phenomenology and Yogacara Buddhism are both known for their investigations of consciousness, there exists a core tension between them: phenomenology affirms the existence of essence, whereas Yogacara Buddhism argues that everything is empty of essence (svabhava). How is constructive cultural exchange possible when traditions hold such contradictory views? Answering this question and positioning both philosophical traditions in their respective intellectual and linguistic contexts, Jingjing Li argues that what Edmund Husserl means by essence differs from what Chinese Yogacarins mean by svabhava, partly because Husserl problematises the substantialist understanding of essence in European philosophy. Furthermore, she reveals that Chinese Yogacara has developed an account of self-transformation, ethics and social ontology that renders it much more than simply a Buddhist version of Husserlian phenomenology. A pair of giant pandas sent as a gift from China arrived in Qatar on Oct. 19 a month ahead of the World Cup. They are taking up residence in an indoor enclosure in the desert nation designed to duplicate conditions in the dense forests of China's mountainous Sichuan province. Eight hundred kilograms (nearly 1,800 pounds) of fresh bamboo is being flown in each week to feed them. Jing Jing, a 4-year-old male weighing 120 kilograms (265 pounds), has been given the Arabic name Suhail, and 3-year-old female Si Hai, at 70 kilograms (154 pounds), has been given the Arabic name Thuraya. The pandas were quarantined for at least 21 days before visitors were allowed to see them. Qatar has been expecting some 1.2 million visitors for the monthlong World Cup beginning Nov. 20. The gas-rich Gulf nation is the first Muslim or Arab country to host the world's biggest sporting event. Tim Bouts, the director of Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation, said that in addition to providing the perfect indoor climate for the pandas, the enclosure will also shield them from stressful noises while allowing them to interact with visitors. “There was a lot of thinking which went into this building to make it, I think, the best building for pandas in the world,” he said. Pandas, which reproduce rarely in the wild and rely on a diet of bamboo in the mountains of western China, remain among the world's most threatened species. An estimated 1,800 pandas live in the wild, while another 500 are in zoos or reserves, mostly in Sichuan. They are the unofficial national mascot of China, which has gifted pandas to 20 countries. On November 30, three Oakland women were surprised with billboards celebrating their leadership in the movement to bring 100% renewable energy to 100% of people. The honorees are Jing Jing He, community organizer with Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN), Jodi Pincus, Executive Director of Rising Sun Energy Center, and Emily Kirsch, Founder and CEO of Powerhouse. On this week's show, I speak with Jing Jing, Jodi and Sarah Shanley Hope of the Solutions Project, which organized the surprise. Then we speak with Stacy Russo, whose new book is We Were Going to Change the World: Interviews with Women From the 1970s & 1980s Southern California Punk Rock Scene. Stacy, who was part of that scene, interviewed over 40 women including fans, musicians and photographers, about why they were drawn to punk, how they participated and how it influenced the rest of their lives.
