Recently, I've been craving a project. With Lola starting her senior year of high school, I feel like maybe this craving is just a distraction (but, still a craving nonetheless!) There's something about losing myself in organizing a closet that is therapeutic. So this week, we bring our favorite organizational friends, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin of The Home Edit, on our podcast. Clea and Joanna have two new books out now. They have a children's book and a teen book both about organization, so we thought we would get a few tips! The biggest thing you can do to start getting your teen or kid more organized is editing their space so they are invested in all the items they have. If they have a lot of junk they aren't invested in, it's harder to keep a space tidy. Clea and Joanna give us more tips about keeping spaces clean, and we entertain them with the Top 5 things Penn has found in his car. (Buckle up, this one gets weird!) You can learn more about their books here.Read or listen to a free chapter of our book, ADHD Is Awesome: https://theholdernessfamily.com/adhd-is-awesome/ Shop Our MerchJoin Our NewsletterFollow us on YouTubeFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TikTok Follow us on FacebookKim and Penn are online content creators known for their award-winning videos, including original music, song parodies, and comedy sketches. Their videos have resulted in over 2 billion views and 8 million followers across their social media platforms since they (accidentally) went viral in 2013. They have a best-selling book on marriage communication, a top-rated podcast, a fun-filled family card game, and most recently, they were the winners on Season 33 of The Amazing Race. The Holderness Family Podcast is produced by Ann Marie Taepke and edited and engineered by Max Trujillo of Trujillo Media and Sam Allen. Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin are very special to Molly. In fact, she met them years back as they were doing what they do best: organizing. Cut to “Get Organized with The Home Edit,” which Molly produced, and these two women have easily become the most famous (and best) organizers on the planet. Given we are fully in spring, we figured why not have them on to talk all things spring cleaning. It's a dreaded subject for some but they offer fun tools to make the process less daunting. From the pantry to the closet to the difference between editing and separating, if you're in the need of a spruce up, this episode is for you. The Home Edit—you've seen their work, right? You can't miss their trademark way of organizing according to the colors of the rainbow, or maybe you've seen their successful Netflix series. For sure you've heard of some of their impressive Hollywood clients like Khloe Kardashian, Drew Barrymore, and Reese Witherspoon. Well, with their expertise and fun personalities best friends Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin catapulted to stardom, and in February of 2022 I was able to chat with them about how we can transform the chaos of our homes (and our camera rolls!) into beautiful organized spaces. Very shortly after releasing this episode, however, Clea bravely announced on Instagram that she had breast cancer. The world watched as she battled cancer with an incredible amount of grace and strength. I'm happy to report that she is now cancer free and back to work with Joanna on several big new Home Edit projects. It was just anoounced that they are set to star in the TV revamp of the crazy-popular show “Extreme Home Makeover"--I cannot wait for them to shout "move that bus"! And, they have a new book coming out this fall about how to stay organized. I'm happy to get to share this encore episode with you– you're going to love learning what systems they use to keep their own homes organized and what the "low bar lifestyle" is all about. How the hell are ya?! It's another Besting Each Other episode! Nicole and Sasheer welcome best friends Clea Shearer & Joanna Teplin. Joanna shares that she reluctantly met Clea through a mutual friend at The Frothy Monkey and the rest is history. Clea's favorite memory was traveling to London and realizing Joanna had been using her toothbrush for three days. Joanna loves Clea's sense of humor and Clea loves to make Joanna laugh. They both agree that Joanna would be slightly better on the show Survivor but both of their many phobias would keep them from even getting to the island. Together they host the Netflix show, Get Organized with The Home Edit where they help clients reorganize their homes all while making them look stylish at the same time. It is important to keep your mind clear, have a balanced diet, and maintain a regular exercise regimen to shape your personal development. The job goes beyond just ensuring money is coming in or the job is completed. In order to execute the right plan for your business, you must also allow your knowledge to grow. Proper education will not only help you add mastership to your profession but will also give you an idea of what's the wise thing to do in a difficult situation. Those were the details of our conversation. Our discussion focused on how home service business owners can shape their personal development. In response to Molly's questions, I provided some tips and methods on how to exercise these practices. Which is the main focus of Jobber's summit this upcoming 1st of March. The goal is to provide small business owners with seminars and coaching to help them develop themselves. Join us in this exciting event that you can register for free. Moly Milosovic leads Jobber's brand marketing and communications. Using brand partnerships, influencer marketing, communications, community programs, media relations, social media, and virtual and in-person activations, her team creates demand in a new market category, home service. “I gotta say that someone on the outside looking in-home service is this really awesome community, and honestly, green industry, landscaping lawn care are really ahead of the curve where there's no gatekeeping, everybody's sharing knowledge with each other, and sharing what worked, what didn't work for them in the past, that's really great.” - Moly Milosovic Why do you have to listen to today's episode. 1:13 - “My functional title, as I like to say, well, if this is true, is Director of Brand Marketing and Communications. But what I actually think makes more sense is Head of Community. And that's because I work with a team that is kind of focused on two things, one community initiative to share knowledge and learnings throughout home service.” A brief introduction to Moly Milosovic. Here's a little bit about how she got started in what she does now as Director of Brand Marketing and Communications at Jobber. 4:00 “So then I get down this path of like, oh my god, communication and the articulation of your communication, how well do you define the space in which you communicate? How well do you put rails up on your messaging and say, you know, we stand for this, which means we don't stand for this, and then being lukewarm.” During the conversation, Keith and Molly discuss the importance of communication in curving your personal development. 7:55 “Sometimes we get these life-changing epiphanies like we hear a very specific piece of information that's calibrated at the perfect time. And then what it does is, it's the one domino that connects all these other dots. And you wake up in your business, like if you're a landscape business, and it's the one thing that helps you overcome the fears.” During this interview, Keith talks about his life-changing epiphanies as a business owner. 14:25 “My friend Joshua Latimer said to me he's like, what's the most amount of money you've ever invested in your unlike a coaching program, I look like two grand he goes, that's the problem. You need to invest like five or 10 or 20 grand and then really put something on the line.” Keith recommends joining a mastermind group or coaching program not only to help you achieve personal growth but also to scale your business. Investing in your education is the best way to build a strong foundation to level up your business. 19:21 “So fitness is very important. So he said, like you said, consistency over intensity. Yeah. So I set these tiny little goals like, I'm just going to do 20 Push Ups. That's all I have to do today. And if I jog, I don't have a job. But I just had the power walk one time around the block. And it's like, so if you force yourself to jujitsu, that little tiny workout, but you got to do it.” Keith points out that when it comes to developing your personal development, it doesn't always refer to your mental health, but also to your physical health. He emphasized taking care of his health by doing some exercise that also helps him clear his head. 29:02 “In the Millionaire Mind book by T Harv. Eker. He talks about 80% Go. So he talks about not being a perfectionist. He says there's a saying I love it's like, don't wait till you get good until you get going, and then you'll get good. Right? Molly asked Keith the question about entrepreneurs being too hard on themselves. “If entrepreneurs are really hard on themselves. So there's this idea that you're doing it wrong. Or if you do it, you could think that you're not doing it the way you're supposed to or that you give up if you don't do it perfectly.” If you listen carefully, you will be surprised by his answer. Key Takeaways “So I believe you have to get clear about the muck in your life in the places you're wasting time. And maybe you're bringing out, eating too much fast food and falling asleep, or you have toxic habits, identify all that stuff, and then go to work on that stuff to get that stuff out of the way once you let go of the heavy buckets of concrete or the sandbags or that things holding you down to the toxic relationship that you spent too much time or, you know, once you can get rid of that it's like, Whoa, it's like holding a beach ball under water. And it's so hard to do because it takes so much might, and then you finally let go, and the thing just pops up to the top and just starts floating on top of the water. Why? Because that's its natural state. So what I mean by that is now you can free up all this mental and emotional bandwidth before you can actually start to receive more new information. You might have to get rid of old stuff.” - Keith Kalfas “You could be could read a book, listen to a podcast, come to an event like dauber Summit. And you'll get, hopefully, really tangible information. But then the idea of, okay, I want to go deeper on this topic, or I want to go even better in this and then invest in a course or a coach. What that speaks to me about is accountability. I personally like setting up meetings to meet with people. So I have like an every three-week meeting with a mentor. When I'm reading a book, I often like to find someone in my life or on my team to a book club with so that I have to have notes ready to talk to them about it every couple of weeks.” - Moly Milosovic “We look up to people, and we think that they're perfect. I like how we're trading epiphanies here because that reminds me of another quote that I recently heard about how if you see someone doing something at that expert level for the 100th time they're doing it, you have to remember that they did have a first time that they did that thing. And it did not go that well. That's how they became an expert. It's not that they woke up one day and they were just magically bestowed with that talent. So yeah, the people we look up to aren't perfect, and they have totally screwed up. But they had the bravery.” - Moly Milosovic JOBBER SUMMIT Jobber Summit is an annual, free online event where home service business owners and management teams can connect with their community and get the expert advice they need to reach new heights of success in their businesses. ● Registration link: https://go.getjobber.com/Kalfas-JobberSummit-23?utm_source=PS_ambassador&utm_medium=keithkalfas8521 ● Event takes place on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 ○ Morning Event: 10 am–2 pm ET | Evening Event: 6–10 pm ET Sample Copy On March 1, reach new heights at Jobber Summit! Friends and business partners Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin have become stars of pandemic feel-good TV, with their Netflix show Get Organised with The Home Edit. They go into someone's home – be it a Hollywood celebrity or a stressed family of five - and transform a cluttered space into something beautiful and functional. The emphasis is firmly on giving busy women back some time and headspace through better organisation of their homes. Clea and Joanna join Emma to give some pro tips and explain how they got the business off the ground with a little help from Hollywood actor and exec Reese Witherspoon. Women with learning disabilities die on average 26 years younger than the general population. This shocking figure is contained in a new report which investigates health inequalities for people with learning disabilities, and the resulting premature and, often, entirely avoidable deaths. In her first interview since taking up the role of Chair of Trustees at the Learning Disability charity Mencap, the former Director General of the CBI Dame Carolyn Fairbairn tells Emma about why the life, and death, of her sister Diana Fairbairn, who had learning disabilities and cerebral palsy, and who died last December, has inspired her new campaigning role to improve support for people with learning disabilities. As the Women and Equalities Committee in Parliament releases its final report into the overlooked impacts of the menopause, Emma speaks to the Chair of that Committee, Conservative MP Caroline Nokes, about the actions she wants the government to now take up. These include consulting on making menopause a protected characteristic under the Equality Act – meaning employers would have to make reasonable adjustments for menopausal women in the workplace. Last month, we asked listeners about the matriarchs in their lives, the redoubtable women whose stories deserve to be told. Today, listener Kate from Cambridge tells her Grandmother ‘Babushka's story.

This week on the Podcast, The Home Edit founders discuss how they Built a home organization empire. Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin both moved to Nashville from Cali without knowing many people and after a friend introduced them via text - not only a friendship blossomed but so did The Home Edit. They realized that no one was using social media platforms to market their home organization companies so they decided beautiful photos of their projects were perfect for Instagram. The goal in starting The Home Edit was to reinvent traditional organizing and merge it with design and interior styling. While every project is rooted in functional systems that can be maintained for the long term, there's just as much emphasis placed on transforming the space visually and adding their signature stylized aesthetic. Six years later, they have written two books and are on season 2 of their Netflix show!Tune in to learn about their journey, why they always keep their foot on the gas, having a partner, gratitude and how they have been able to secure clients and press. I can definitely attest to the fact that it is challenging. Try incorporating "Tid Bits", much like Tiny Habits so that you can move towards minimalism at your own pace, but make sure you also challenge yourself when needed! Here are Five Tid Bits that you can practice right away:One Need a Day - Let's get back to single-tasking and really focus on that one thing that really needs to happen today. Do away with the multi-tasking, multi-level, cross-pollinated to-do lists that just make us feel like failures. You only need to do ONE thing today, or maybe even NO-thing! Do what makes you feel good. Do what speaks to your body and spirit. Ask yourself, "What is the one thing I want to get done today that would really make me feel good about myself?" Maybe it's practicing yoga for 10 more minutes than you already do, maybe it's cooking a meal from scratch, maybe it's taking a walk around your block and saying hello to another human being, maybe it's stretching outside your comfort zone and having a deeper meaningful conversation with your neighbor, maybe it's just sitting in the sun feeling the warmth on your skin while cuddling with your fur-baby or loved ones. There are so many things you can do to feed your soul. Whatever those things are for you, please do them regularly!Rituals - As humans, we actually do crave some form of routine as part of our natural circadian rhythm. Routines can keep us healthy and keep our minds engaged when we form self-care rituals that put us and our needs at the forefront. Rituals can be those moments in life at the beginning and end of our day that gives us the time and grace to get into our body/heart-mind/spirit connection which can really feed our souls and make us feel the feelings of accomplishment and success that has nothing to do with your to-do list or your job.Shoulds, Coulds, Woulds! - Are you living your life for yourself or someone else? When you don't live your life for yourself and your truth, your mind/body/spirit actually becomes disconnected and you go into depression because that vital internal alignment is not there. In the words of Martha Beck, "Integrity is the cure for unhappiness. Period."Live Now - Letting go of the past is crucial to living your best life right now. Enough said - you know this in your heart of hearts, no need to elaborate. If you need more tips on how to live now, have a listen to my Episode 4 - What is Hygge, Slow Living and Unloading Baggage? Simple Pleasures under $5 - I really love all the cute suggestions, but I have found that just saving $5 a week has shifted my money mindset into that of saving and not spending and getting caught up in all the consumerism. As soon as I saw how much I could amass with such a small amount, I kept adding to it and went from 5 to 10 to 15 to $20 a week. Try using Stash, Acorns or Fidelity and watch your small potatoes grow into a life-changing full-on spud farm!!!Adapted from "52 Ways to Simplify Your Life", by Lynn Gordon

This week, Rachel & Rodger chat with entrepreneurial powerhouses and dear friends, Clea Shearer & Joanna Teplin! Clea & Joanna's wildly successful home organization business,The Home Edit, started with a fateful lunch date that never ended. Now they have several books, a popular Netflix series, and a loyal client base that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Kourtney Kardashian, and Neil Patrick Harris. And to think Joanna wasn't interested in meeting Clea at first! These organizational wizzes dish about their tendency to bicker like an old married couple, the power of revealing an authentic side of your business, and the importance of balancing out your business partner's strengths and weaknesses. While Clea & Joanna are both happily married (and NOT sister wives), they are clearly made for each other in a different kind of way. Try incorporating "Tid Bits", much like Tiny Habits so that you can move towards minimalism at your own pace, but make sure you also challenge yourself when needed! Here are Five Tid Bits that you can practice right away:Step Back - Use the "Wheel of Life" as a tool to gauge where you are in your life and how you rate yourself in each of the following categories: Career, Money, Health, Friends and Family, Significant Other/Romance, Personal Growth and Learning, Fun, leisure and recreation and Physical Environment (your home/office). I love this example of the "Wheel" which asks great questions to help you rate yourself effectively. You may need to highlight the entire link and then click on "go to https:......." : https://static1.squarespace.com/static/54bda4bee4b0a3e130efc4ca/t/5d16e12c3f4bcb0001647b55/1561780526296/Personal-Assessment-Wheel.pdfShow Emotions - Allow your feelings to come to the surface. Be self-aware and with great self-love allow the emotions to surface. If you feel sad, cry, it's actually good for you!Simple Systems - As a homeowner, you really shouldn't need more than 15 - 25 file folders with the most important categories. Please note that on my visit to clients' homes, we usually get rid of 80-85% of all the paper clutter they have been holding on to! Here are some of my favorites that most everyone might need. Set up straight line filing in alphabetical order for simplicity and ease: Bank statementsCable billCar insuranceCar paymentsCell phone billCredit card statementsDental recordsElectric billEmployment recordsHealth insuranceHeating (gas/oil) billHome insuranceInternet billLife insuranceLoans (student loans, personal loans, etc.)Medical recordsMortgage paymentsRental paymentsRetirement accounts (401Ks, IRAs, Roth IRAs, SIMPLE, etc.)Separation records from past employersSpecialized medical recordsTelephone (landline) billVision recordsWater billYearly taxes (one folder for each tax year – you may want to create separate folders for federal and state taxes)Proving What? - All I can say for this is "Be true to YOU," you are the superstar in your own life - only you can live your life. Who honestly cares what other people think or what other peoples expectations are of you? When you are living your life for someone else you cannot be living your best life for YOU!Media Down and Out - This is something that we should all do regularly. Find a day to do a digital detox. Start with 1/2 day without your phone and then graduate to a full day then the whole weekend, or whichever days work for you! Not having the "crutch" of your phone and constantly crooking your neck to look at it will make you feel better overall in body, mind and spirit! It allows you freedom to think for yourself and be creative again. Scrolling incessantly can be truly numbing, if you know what I mean. After hours of scrolling one may feel a sense of loss since many hours become wasted in "watching" rather than "doing." Don't get me wrong since I do believe "vegging out" can be good for you as well. Just finding balance in all of it is truly the key to life!Adapted from "52 Ways to Simplify Your Life", by Lynn Gordon
Please leave a 5-star review and email me at ruma@mylifeinflow.com if you would like to be entered into the "Giveaway Drawing" which will happen monthly as I choose a random 5-star reviewer. Type the words "Organize Your Closet" in the subject line! If you win, I will reach out to you for your best mailing address and send you a copy of "The Home Edit" by Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin!!!Moving towards a minimal life can actually be daunting for many people. Try incorporating "Tid Bits", much like Tiny Habits so that you can move towards minimalism at your own pace, but make sure you also challenge yourself when needed! Here are Five Tid Bits that you can practice right away:A Little R&R - Learn how to rest and relax and do it more! Embody the term "La Dolce Far Niente." Translated this means pleasant relaxation in carefree idleness, or, the essence of doing nothing and enjoying it! You want to change your mindset to "work to live", NOT, "live to work" and again like our French and Italian brothers and sisters, let's embrace "La Dolce Far Niente!"Express Passion - There are so many ways to express your passion! Are you an activist, a home cook, an artist, a runner, a martial artist, a gardener, a storyteller, lover of board games, do you love to teach others, are you an animal lover? The list is endless!!! Volunteerism is a great way to express your passion while helping others (i.e. other humans, animals or the environment to name a few.) Chip away at the stone facade that was imprinted and carved upon you by society. Unleash your spirit, unleash your desires and eliminate the excess! Go on a journey to find your self! I'm sure it will be the best and maybe even the hardest trip of your life. I can guarantee, it will also be the most amazing and fulfilling journey you will ever take!Prioritize - What are your main priorities this month. Write them out and remember, focus on the 20% that will impact 80% of your life. These priorities are most important to improving your life overall. Let the rest go for now and move them along to the next month.Anxious and Afraid - Does the free time you are creating have you worried. Learn to quietly sit in the beauty of having nothing to do or feeling "bored." What a luxury! Try some breathing exercises, just BE, revel in the warmth of the sun or the icy cold of the wind on your cheeks, or the wagging of your dog or cat's tail, smell your food, smell your beverage and allow the aromas to get into your nostrils, watch your plants grow, watch a sunset you get the picture. Have you ever been in a garden and expierienced watching the plants grow? I"ve actually experienced that in the heat of summer. It was 90 degrees Farenheit and I swear I could feel my rose bushes growing taller as I saw the waves of warmth waft up into the atmosphere - it was a "one with nature" experience I will never forget!Clean Out - This is something that we should all do regularly once we have gotten our space the exact way we like it. Regular clean outs are necessary as new things creep into our homes (or garages - that's my prcrastination station.....uggggh.....I have it beautiful and then it becomes a dumping ground again.....then I make it beautiful.......back to a dumping ground......it's a painful process lol lol....I'm still learning and my standard for a garage space is pretty darn high as well. I mean, it should be for me right? I must practice what I preach!Adapted from "52 Ways to Simplify Your Life", by Lynn GordonA special thank you to SmartSound FX HUMAN CROWD Applause Medium Audience applauding and cheering!!!
If you’re used to working alone, it’s tempting to just keep going solo - but finding the right person to work with can make an enormous difference. For Joanna Teplin and Clea Shearer, becoming partners and starting their home organizing business together was unexpected, but an instant success. Their show on Netflix, Getting Organized with the Home Edit, shows Clea and Joanna doing what they love best: organizing mess and chaos into labeled containers and restoring balance. They talk with Carla about how a random lunch date turned into a business meeting, and how their introvert/extrovert combination is the perfect match. This week’s ingredient: organize and edit a space, even just a shelf, to make it functional and beautiful!
Does THE HOME EDIT really need an introduction? Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin join me to talk about kitchen organization, their brand partnership with McCormick, how they use the Flavor Maker app, their Container Store products, The Home Edit on Netflix, and even confess the messiest rooms in their homes (yes, I went there!), This episode is so helpful you'll want to take notes! Get read to clear that to-do list, all while watching Netflix. Netflix's new eight-part series, Get Organised with The Home Edit, sees organising gurus Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin help to edit, categorise and contain clutter from celebrity homes including Reese Witherspoon, Neil Patrick Harris, Eva Longoria and Khloe Kardashian. Clea and Joanna are both California transplants, currently living in Nashville. Brought together by a mutual friend, it was friendship at first text, and business partnership immediately thereafter. The goal in starting The Home Edit was to reinvent traditional organizing, and merge it with design and interior styling. While every project is rooted in functional systems that can be maintained for the long term, there is just as much emphasis placed on transforming the space visually and adding their signature stylized aesthetic. After meeting in 2015 through a mutual friend, Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin decided almost immediately to start a home organization business together. Today, The Home Edit’s more than 1.2 million followers on Instagram regularly covet their rainbow-colored images of organized closets, drawers, and pantries, and they have also organized the homes of celebrity moms like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian, Lauren Conrad, and Mindy Kaling. And this past March they published their first book, aptly called “The Home Edit”.In addition to being entrepreneurial organizers, both Clea and Joanna are also moms to two kids each, and we were lucky enough to nab them during their busy book tour to talk about staying organized as a mama. After their conversation, hear Raschael Ash read her essay, “True life: I'm going to stop apologizing for my messy house now” from Motherly’s website. The Motherly Podcast is hosted by Liz Tenety and produced by Micaela Heck and Samantha Gattsek. Music by The Blue Dot Sessions. Thanks to our sponsor, Prudential.
