Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau take on Higher Learning, the 1995 drama directed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) that tackles themes of race, identity, privilege, and systemic injustice in the American college experience. The film follows three freshmen—Malik (Omar Epps), Kristen (Kristy Swanson), and Remy (Michael Rapaport)—as they navigate the pressures of higher education, racial tensions, and personal transformation at the fictional Columbus University. Some of the most intense and pivotal moments include Malik's struggle with his track scholarship and racial identity, Remy's descent into white supremacy under the influence of Cole Hauser's character, and the tragic climactic shooting scene that shakes the entire campus. Other powerful moments include Ice Cube's character Fudge dropping hard truths about systemic racism, Laurence Fishburne's powerful lectures as Professor Phipps, and the heartbreaking fates of several key characters that still resonate today. Omar Epps as Malik Williams (Love & Basketball, House), Kristy Swanson as Kristen Connor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Phantom), Michael Rapaport as Remy (True Romance, Atypical), Ice Cube as Fudge (Friday, Barbershop), Jennifer Connelly as Taryn (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), Tyra Banks as Deja (Coyote Ugly, America's Next Top Model), Laurence Fishburne as Professor Phipps (The Matrix, John Wick 2), Cole Hauser as Scott Moss (Yellowstone, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Regina King as Monet (Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Busta Rhymes as Dreads (Halloween: Resurrection, Shaft). We continue to celebrate afro-centric films during Black History with a director focus on John Singleton films; Poetic Justice/Higher Learning/Baby Boy!Poetic Justice is a 1993 American romantic drama film written and directed by John Singleton, and starring Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Regina King, and Joe Torry. It follows a poet (Jackson) mourning the loss of her boyfriend from gun violence. She goes on a road trip from South Los Angeles to Oakland on a mail truck, along with her friend (King) and a postal worker (Shakur), in order to deal with depression.Following the success of his debut film, Boyz n the Hood, Singleton wanted to make a film that would give a voice to young African-American women. Jada Pinkett, Lisa Bonet, Monica Calhoun, and many other popular actresses auditioned for the role of Justice, though Singleton knew from the script's draft that the role was solely intended for Jackson. Filming took place from April 11 to July 4, 1992.Poetic Justice was released in the United States on July 23, 1993. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who criticized the screenplay though praised Jackson and Shakur's performances and chemistry. It reached No. 1 in the box office its opening weekend, grossing $11,728,455. It eventually grossed a total of $27,515,786. Jackson received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song for "Again", which also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Janet won 2 MTV Movie awards for her role in the film, including Most Desirable Female. The film has developed a cult following, especially for the chemistry between Jackson and Shakur.Higher Learning is a 1995 American crime drama film written and directed by John Singleton and starring an ensemble cast. The film follows the changing lives of three incoming freshmen at the fictional Columbus University: Malik Williams (Omar Epps), a track star who struggles with academics; Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson), a shy and naive girl; and Remy (Michael Rapaport), a lonely and confused man seemingly out of place in his new environment. The film also featured Tyra Banks' first performance in a theatrical film. Laurence Fishburne won an NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture"; Ice Cube was also nominated for the award. This was the last film appearance of Dedrick D. Gobert, who was shot dead in 1994 prior to the film's release. The exterior shots and outdoor scenes were shot on the campus of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while the interiors were shot at Sony Pictures Studios.aby Boy is a 2001 American coming-of-age hood drama film directed, written and produced by John Singleton, and starring Tyrese Gibson, Snoop Dogg, Ving Rhames, Omar Gooding, A.J. Johnson and Taraji P. Henson.[5] The film follows Joseph "Jody" Summers (Gibson), a 20-year-old bike mechanic as he lives and learns in his everyday life in the hood of Los Angeles. The film was originally written with rapper-actor Tupac Shakur in mind to play Jody; Shakur had previously worked with Singleton on Poetic Justice. However, following Shakur's murder in 1996, Singleton decided to replace Shakur with R&B artist Tyrese Gibson. Additionally, the role of Rodney was originally written for Ice Cube, who had worked with Singleton on Boyz n the Hood and Higher Learning. The film marked the feature acting debut of Gibson and provided Henson with her first prominent role.Released in the United States on June 27, 2001, the film received predominantly positive reviews from critics and audiences, with many deeming it as Singleton's best film since Boyz n the Hood. The film is also the final feature film written by Singleton as he did not write any of his later feature-length directorial projects before his death in April 2019.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

You know, them trying to erase and cover up our history is nothing new right? Back in 1923, the town of Rosewood, which was a predominantly Black town was burned to the ground and many of its inhabitants killed because of one person's lie and hatred. It was swept under the rug for decades until someone finally told the story and in 1997, John Singleton made a movie about the tragedy and documented it to celluloid. This was a rough one, but we still managed to have some fun as we discussed the film. I may have had a passionate rant or two as well. Hugh Osgood was with us on Sunday 9th February – a couple of weeks after the sudden and unexpected passing of John Singleton, father of LifeLine and brother to many. John passed away in the early hours of 28th January, surrounded by his family. We are giving God thanks for John’s life, well-lived, which flowed from a deep relationship with Jesus, enabling him to minister to others right up to the end, without seccumbing to the suffering he was experiencing as his health declined. The qualities he exemplified were a reflection of the love he had experienced through his relationship with his heavenly father. This was characterised over 50+ years in his desire to release the potential he saw in others, include those who were marginalised, and facilitate the building of supportive communities at home and across the world. He leaves behind a significant inheritance which the LifeLine family now have the joy of building on. Hugh’s word to us on this particular Sunday was a commissioning word for the next season: Elisha is on his death bed and King Jehoash visits him, using a phrase that Elisha used when Elijah was dying. When someone significant passes away, it’s tempting to become sentimental, as King Jehoash did. But this isn’t the time for sentimentality. It’s a time for gratitude for everything that God has done; a time to fling open the windows and let the wind of the spirit blow through us afresh. It’s a moment for opening up. A direction has been set, and there’s an arrow of the Lord’s deliverance that’s flying. The story in 2 Kings is about a moment of transfer of responsibility. The king was invited to pick up the arrows and then strike the ground. Elisha was clearly looking for a vigorous response, and when one wasn’t forthcoming prophesied the comparably tepid fate of the King’s future endeavours. This is a similar moment for the family of LifeLine – are we going to rise to the occasion with determination? To stay up to date with podcasts from LifeLine Church, please subscribe. This powerful coming-of-age story follows Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr., Jerry Maguire) as he grows up in South Central Los Angeles, guided by the wisdom of his father, Furious Styles (Laurence Fishburne, The Matrix), and navigating the struggles of friendship with Doughboy (Ice Cube, Friday) and Ricky (Morris Chestnut, The Best Man). With impactful performances from Angela Bassett (Black Panther) as Reva Devereaux, Nia Long (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) as Brandi, and Regina King (Watchmen) as Shalika, the film captures themes of family, systemic racism, and personal growth. Greg and Coy react to the film's most iconic scenes, including the unforgettable "Ricky!" moment, Furious's moving speech on gentrification, and the emotional conclusion that left audiences worldwide in awe. They also dive into some of the most memorable quotes like "Either they don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's going on in the hood" and "You gotta think, young brother, about your future." How do you remake a classic? Well in the case of trying to bring back the LEGENDARY Private Detective John Shaft of the 1971 Gordon Parks cult hit starring Richard Roundtree, acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice) teamed with acclaimed writer Richard Writer (The Color of Money, Clockers) to....NOT remake it, they decided to "re-imagine" the character as a former NYPD cop trying to exact justice in late '90's New York City. Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson now plays the titular character with Roundtree returning to play his uncle. This time around, Shaft is determined to bring justice for the racially-charged murder of an innocent young man at a NYC club. The murderer is played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale (The Fighter), the witness whom Shaft has to find is played by Oscar-nominee Toni Colette (The Sixth Sense).....and beyond that, Shaft also has to combat corrupt local cops PLUS local drug kingpin Peoples Hernandez played by Oscar-nominee Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction). Throw in some high-octane action, Busta Rhymes as Shaft's driver, AND....the iconic Oscar-winning theme song from Isaac Hayes and what do you get? Besides several Oscar nominees, you happen to get a surprisingly enjoyable (and very timely) action thriller to kick off Black History Month. Can you dig it? :) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Generative AI's popularity has led to a renewed interest in quality assurance — perhaps unsurprising given the inherent unpredictability of the technology. This is why, over the last year, the field has seen a number of techniques and approaches emerge, including evals, benchmarking and guardrails. While these terms all refer to different things, grouped together they all aim to improve the reliability and accuracy of generative AI. To discuss these techniques and the renewed enthusiasm for testing across the industry, host Lilly Ryan is joined by Shayan Mohanty, Head of AI Research at Thoughtworks, and John Singleton, Program Manager for Thoughtworks' AI Lab. They discuss the differences between evals, benchmarking and testing and explore both what they mean for businesses venturing into generative AI and how they can be implemented effectively. Learn more about evals, benchmarks and testing in this blog post by Shayan and John (written with Parag Mahajani): https://www.thoughtworks.com/insights/blog/generative-ai/LLM-benchmarks,-evals,-and-tests

Welcome back to The Culture Garden Podcast—and this week, we're celebrating a HUGE milestone: Episode 100!
It was mid October when I invited Ray Hadley to be special guest on the occasion of our 500th podcast episode. Never once during the conversation did the legendary broadcaster so much as hint that he was contemplating calling time on his 2GB morning programme. We made arrangements to record the interview on the afternoon of Thursday November 5th. Like many of his listeners and colleagues I was stunned, when less than an hour into his programme on Thursday Ray made the shock announcement that December 13th is to be his final day in the 2GB studios. Television news crews were setting up in the building long before he finished his on air shift at midday. The broadcaster was inevitably “swamped” by media outlets for several hours. I wouldn't have been one bit surprised had he requested a postponement of our podcast interview, but I should have known better. True to his word Ray was ready to go when I called him as arranged at 4.30pm. I reminded him that nobody had seen this coming. He admitted it was a surreal experience to be announcing his own retirement from mainstream radio. I asked Ray to identify the likely reasons he was able to win 160 consecutive surveys. He nominated one particular story where his on air comments contributed to a better outcome. Ray made no secret of the fact that he won't be lost to media, but says the days of 3.30am wake up calls are over. He takes us back to childhood days as the son of hard working parents Morris and Elsie Hadley. Ray looks back on the massive impact of his father's death at just 46 years of age. He shares some funny stories from his eight years with Steers Auctions at Parramatta. He believes his experience as an auctioneer helped to develop his commentary skills. Ray says he was chuffed beyond belief in the early 80's when offered the role of Harold Park course broadcaster following the retirement of Ray Conroy. He takes us back to the days immediately after the Super League war when 2UE lost its Rugby League broadcast rights. 2UE's Continuous Call team made history when it continued to win the ratings without broadcasting the game. Ray pays a special tribute to the man they called “The Starmaker.” 2UE Programme Director the late John Brennan was lauded in the industry for his unique ability to spot potential talent from a mile off. Ray Hadley's career took a life changing turn in 2002 when John Singleton purchased 2GB. He initially poached Ray from 2UE to call Rugby League, but changed his mind soon after. The broadcaster was stunned when “Singo” asked him to take over the morning programme in opposition to 2UE's John Laws. Ray shares the full story. The multiple award winning broadcaster says he has no regrets about missing the opportunity to call 100 State Of Origins. Ray was privileged to be a member of the commentary team for seven Olympic Games. He says Cathy Freeman's unforgettable win in the 400m at the Sydney Olympics remains his fondest memory. He was agreeable to looking back on what he describes as the lowest point in his long career- the 2019 bullying allegations from a small group of staff members. He looks back with candour on a very unhappy time in his life. Ray talks with great affection of his children and grandchildren. Today he's the quintessential doting grandfather. It's a massive coincidence that Ray's retirement announcement came just a few hours before this podcast was recorded. No wonder he was in the mood to reminisce. Great to have him on our 500th podcast episode.

Sure, everyone has heard of Coppola and Scorsese and Spielberg. But those guys are two silent generations and a Boomer! What about those Gen X filmmakers that have really made an impact on Hollywood? It turns out that there were way more notable directors from our generation than I had originally expected. This is only part one.Part 1 covers those directors born between 1965 and 1969. You may recognize names like Michael Bay, Wes Anderson, Antoine Fuqua, James Gunn, Zack Snyder, and Denis Villeneuve. Billions of dollars in box office between them, with some more “artistic” projects in their filmographies as well. We can also get so caught up the “big name” directors, that it is forgotten how the Pixar films have been - up until very recently - very high quality films, regardless of being animated. So guys like Byron Howard and Andrew Stanton, who have made some of the best of the Pixar flicks, are not household names outside the hardcore animation fans. It should come as no surprise that the movies that have most resonated with me in recent years have been Gen X directed. What are some of your favorites?
