As William Shakespeare wrote in The Merchant of Venice, “Even the Devil can cite Scripture for his purpose. Pastor Baker lived a double life. His wife Kari didn't see it until it was much too late. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 39. Our book this week is “Deadly Little Secrets: The Minister, His Mistress, and a Heartless Texas Murder” by Kathryn Casey and our guest is Kristy Hensley. Kristy is a Licensed Professional Counselor at Seed of Hope Counseling and a Co-Founder of Indigo Hills, a 501c3 Non-Profit retreat center that helps ministry leaders find rest and recuperation. Linda Dulin got the worst phone call any parent could get in April of 2006. A police dispatcher said there had been an accident at her daughter Kari's home. She asked if it was one of her granddaughters, but was told it was her daughter. She called Kari's husband Matt and asked him what was going on. He told her that Kari was dead. He said she'd committed suicide. 1 Timothy 3:1-3 NIV Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. It's okay to hold leaders accountable. If somone had held Matt Baker accountable, Kari might still be alive.

If you don't believe that evil exists, you may change your mind after today's episode. For over thirty years, women and girls disappeared from the small towns that dot I-45 between Houston and Galveston, Texas. At least 30, and probably more. Since the early 70's, someone - maybe more than one someone - has been snatching unsuspecting young women and killing them. What did they have in common? They met evil face to face. This is Season 4, Episode 32. Our book this week is Deliver Us: Three Decades of Murder and Redemption in the Infamous I-45 Texas Killing Fields by Kathryn Casey. Let's investigate a bit of these women's stories. The tenth chapter of Matthew describes Jesus sending out his disciples to spread the word about the nearness of the Kingdom of Heaven. After telling them all they would need to do, Jesus got very real with them, saying “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.” (v 16) In every woman's story I share today, they were certainly sheep among wolves. All were young. Some were very, very young. They didn't understand the nature of wolves. They were innocents who didn't know they were in the midst of predators. While I was preparing this episode, I learned something about wolves. Because wolves tend to be dispersed across a wider area than their preferred prey, they will adapt and feed on whatever is handy. Their kill rates are highest when their prey has come through a tough winter and is weaker than usual. And when humans don't intervene and keep their population under control, they can multiply very rapidly. That all hits pretty close to home, doesn't it? These women who lost their lives to murderous wolves were chosen because they were simply there. They were in vulnerable seasons, some due to instability in their lives, some simply due to their tender age and lack of life experience. Not one deserved what happened to her. So how do we prepare ourselves and our loved ones to be “as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves?” It starts by being aware that the wolves of this world are purposely looking for sheep to harm. Sometimes people make evil choices because they just want to, and we have to acknowledge that in order to practice reasonable caution. But we also have to be gentle. Hiding away and treating everyone like they are out to get us doesn't serve God's purposes. And we can't be a person of impact that way! So please find at least one person that you can share something you learned today, so they can be safer too. And I'd love to hear what that something is! Let me know what you think! Send me an email at lori@theunlovelytruth.com or message me on social media. I love it when people are willing to have those hard, but impactful conversations! Critically acclaimed author Kathryn Casey delivers a riveting account of the brutal murders of young women in the I-45/Texas Killing Fields. The book that spotlighted decades-old murders and helped solve the cases, Deliver Us contains interviews with alleged serial killer William Lewis Reece, who has led investigators to the remains of young women buried in Texas.Over a three-decade span, more than twenty women--many teenagers--died mysteriously in the small towns bordering Interstate 45, a fifty-mile stretch of highway running from Houston to Galveston. The victims were strangled, shot, or savagely beaten. Six met their demise in pairs. They had one thing in common: being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The day she vanished, Colette Wilson waited for her mother after band practice. Best friends Debbie Ackerman and Maria Johnson loved to surf and were last seen hitchhiking. Laura Kate Smither dreamed of becoming a ballerina and disappeared just weeks before her thirteenth birthday. In this harrowing true crime exposition, award-winning journalist Kathryn Casey tracks these tragic cases, investigates the evidence, interviews the suspects, and pulls back the cloak of secrecy in search of elusive answers.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. It's episode 107 and the Sinister Sisters are not fans of Twitter. Does no one else think Peyton Manning would be great at Sims? In part one of today's group episode, Sarah dives into the history of the foreboding 25 acre stretch of land in League City, Texas known as the Killing Fields due to the substantial amount of human remains discovered in the area. Morgan then covers the disappearance and murders of Rhonda Johnson and Sharon Shaw which led to the (possibly coerced) confession and conviction of Michael Lloyd Self. Sarah then ends with her story on the stinking bag of poop himself Edward Harold Bell who in prison claimed to have killed the “eleven who went to Heaven.” If you want to bury something, just bury a plant. Children say the scariest things. Sometimes you can't help but feel like they know something you don't. One daycare worker vividly remembers a moment that sent shivers traveling down her spine. A little boy was playing with a little girl. House. Innocent right? Out of nowhere, the little boy started to scream and smash mommy doll up against the wall. It was so unlike him. The alarming part? The little boy's mom had recently been murdered and everyone suspected someone close to her. Did the boy know more than he told the police? ` Book Rec: “Shattered” - by Kathryn Casey (amazing deep dive and really shines a light on the victim) Full Source Notes: rottenmangopodcast.com Learn more about your ad choices. The Joyful Mourning - A Podcast for Women Who Have Experienced Pregnancy or Infant Loss
Listen in as I spend some time with Kathryn Ann Casey -- a mom to 4 children here and 3 in heaven, a woman who’s journey to motherhood and in motherhood has been full of heartache and loss and grief. And yet, after experiencing so much suffering she speaks with such tenderness and peace and reminds listeners of the joy that can be had even in the midst of suffering. Kathryn experienced 2 miscarriages, her son, Peter, has a rare and life-threatening genetic condition called SPINT2 and her daughter Celeste died during birth at 37 weeks from anencephaly. In our time together Kathryn shares wisdom specifically for women who have received a life-limiting diagnosis for their baby (she even explains why she prefers that term over terminal or fatal), she shares with her why she made the decision to carry her daughter to term but she also helps us understand the struggle she had with making that decision. She gives helpful wisdom to those who may love someone who is grieving and very tangible advice on how to walk older siblings through the death of a baby. And her answer to “is there anything you would do differently” may surprise you -- but it is honest and helpful and full of much wisdom. Listen for that around the 38-39 minute mark. This episode is full of practical wisdom, but more than that it is a reminder that joy can be had even amidst the worst of circumstances. That we can find the good, even in the pain. And most of all, I pray this episode reminds you that you are not alone in your grief and that you are more loved than you can ever imagine. YOU ARE NOT ALONE If you are feeling alone today and are looking for a safe place to share what you are going through, a place where you will be understood in this season of loss -- come join our free online community, The Joyful Mourning Community. JUDGE. JURY. EXECUTIONER.On a cold January morning, the killer executed Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse in broad daylight. Eight shots fired a block from the Kaufman County Courthouse. Two months later, a massacre. The day before Easter, the couple slept. Bunnies, eggs, a flower centerpiece gracing the table. Death rang their doorbell and filled the air with the rat-a-tat-tat of an assault weapon discharging round after round into their bodies.Eric Williams and his wife, Kim, celebrated the murders with grilled steaks. Their crimes covered front pages around the world, many saying the killer placed a target square on the back of law enforcement. Williams planned to exact revenge on all those who had wronged him, one at a time. Throughout the spring of 2013, Williams sowed terror through a small Texas town, and a quest for vengeance turned to deadly obsession. His intention? To keep killing, until someone found a way to stop him. IN PLAIN SIGHT: The Kaufman County Prosecutors Murders-Kathryn Casey

The officer responding to a 911 call at one of Houston’s hippest high-rises expected the worst. After all, domestic violence situations can be unpredictable. But nothing could’ve prepared him for what he found: a beautiful woman drenched in blood . . . an older man lying dead on the floor . . . and a cobalt blue suede stiletto with tufts of white hair stuck to its five-and-a-half-inch heel. With her stunning looks, magnetic personality, and erratic behavior, Ana Trujillo had a notorious reputation on the downtown Houston scene. She spoke often of occult powers, though few knew how deeply she believed such boasts. Stefan Andersson was a gentle soul, a Swedish transplant with a good career and trusted friends, who was desperate to find someone special. Theirs is a story of obsession, madness, and tragedy. Because once Stefan fell head over heels for Ana, he was under her control—and he didn’t have a chance in hell. POSSESSED: The Infamous Texas Stilletto Murder-Kathryn Casey

JOHN THIBODEAUX (@john_thibodeaux) brings the maths and the musics to Penthouse Studio 4W! John talks about (briefly) being an engineer, his music project, the freakshow of politics, Game of Thrones and how the "comedy sausage" is made! SHOW NOTES 0:00 Intro 0:40 John is rocking an old school Padres cap. Sammy is shocked to learn John was an engineer. 3:35 He will be visiting Colombia in April. “Humor for me growing up was always like a--I don’t want to say defense mechanism--but like an infiltration mechanism...” 6:55 Sammy quizzes John about what his life plans and goals were at various ages in his life and about the freezing desert epiphany that led to his comedy career. 18:25 John has a musical project inspired by Kathryn Casey’s true crime novel Deliver Us. We both like sad things because we’re involved in comedy. 25:00 Police are warning of roving trio of men challenging people to rap battles. John shares what he would and would not challenge other people to do. “I think if Hamilton has taught us anything it’s that real progress occurs when you rap it out.” 30:10 The character of Hulk Hogan has a larger penis than the person playing him. Speaking of racists, hey, politics! We delve into the interesting, scary mess that is the 2016 election. Critically acclaimed author Kathryn Casey delivers a riveting account of the brutal murders of young women in the I-45/Texas Killing FieldsOver a three-decade span, more than twenty women—many teenagers—died mysteriously in the small towns bordering Interstate 45, a fifty-mile stretch of highway running from Houston to Galveston. In this harrowing true crime exposition, award-winning journalist Kathryn Casey tracks these tragic cases, investigates the evidence, interviews the suspects, and pulls back the cloak of secrecy in search of elusive answers. DELIVER US-Three Decades of Murder and Redemption in the Infamous 1-45/Texas Killing Fields-Kathryn Casey
To his parishioners, minister Matt Baker seemed a pious and good man. To his wife, Kari, he was a devoted husband and caring father. Always sunny and vivacious, Kari never questioned their frequent relocations from one small Texas Baptist church to another. Even when tragedy struck, Kari remained strong—until one day, inexplicably, she took her own life.To friends and family, Kari's suicide made no sense—and they struggled with questions they couldn't answer. Why couldn't Matt hold a job with any one church? Why did he cut off all contact with Kari's devastated parents soon after her death? And who was the blond companion he began appearing with just days after the funeral? But it would take a team of investigators and dogged determination to bring Matt Baker's dark secrets to light—revealing a shocking history of lies, infidelity, cruelty, and sexual obsession that may have led a serial predator cloaked in God's word to commit murder.
In Creekstone, Texas, a small, quiet suburb of Houston, football was king...and David Temple was a prince. A former high school and college gridiron star-turned-coach, he had a fairy-tale marriage to bright, vivacious Belinda Lucas, a teacher at the local high school who was so warm and poular her colleagues called her "The Sunshine Girl."The fairy tale ended savagely on January 11, 1999, when belinda's lifeless body was discovered in a closet. Her skull had been shattered by a shotgun blast at close range. She was eight months pregnant.Threre was no damning evidence directly linking the brutal murder to husband David, who stood by emotionless and dry-eyed as police searched the crime scene. But a dogged eight-year investigation would expose a shocking history of domination, infidelity and rage, ultimately resulting in an epic courtroom battle for the ages, as the scandalous truth was revealed about love betrayed and innocent lives...SHATTERED-KATHRYN CASEY

In DESCENT, three college-age kids with the whole world ahead of them slide into dangerous territory, and two end up committing a terrible, terrible crime. Finally, after two decades covering crime, she has relied on her experiences and expanded into fiction.
